Kolkata were left devastated after their narrow loss to Somerset the other night but they will be pleased with their players performances. Kolkata got off to a decent start despite losing the 2 early wickets of Bisla and Gambhir and after 10 overs were 2/62. The Knight Riders really lifted their game in the last 7 overs when Kallis and Yusuf Pathan started to hit the ball harder. Kallis has been a key player for Kolkata over the past year including the IPL but he gets a lot of scrutiny about his slow approach to the T20 game but as he showed against Somerset he is capable of scoring fairly quickly. The first 10 overs of bowling was a horrid time for the Knight Riders as that was where the game was lost due to some poor bowling and some excellent batting. The spinners will remain key on this surface in Hyderabad here the wicket is slow but Brett Lee is an experienced bowler but for Kolkata to be very hard to beat he needs to take some wickets as he only has 50 wickets from his 60 T20 appearances. The key for Kolkata is to find early wickets and of course manage a way to face Shaun Tait.
South Australia performed extra ordinary during the Big Bash but that did have Kieron Pollard then but now they must use their Australian talent and Adil Rashid to conquer the world and go all the way to the final this year but they must win this match at all cost. Other than Shaun Tait the bowling wasn’t too bad at all but Tait must bounce back after being destroyed by JJ Smuts. It was a shame during the batting innings for the Redbacks as their big players let them down with Harris, Cooper and Ferguson failing to get going. Kolkata are steady starters and when Shaun Tait is coming at you anything can happen so key for South Australia is key wickets but the spinners may cause Kolkata a few problems as they were failing to hit the spinners freely. The Daniel Harris and Klinger parnership is crucial as both are well experienced in the format and both are capable of big things but they need a good start to gather some confidence and put Kolkata on the back foot right from the get go.

South Africa vs Australia

2011-09-27T07:51:00.000-07:00

Australia's acting head coach, Troy Cooley, hopes the conditions in South Africa will help Mitchell Johnson regain his best form after a disappointing year. Cooley will be in charge for Australia's upcoming trip to South Africa after being named as the temporary replacement for Tim Nielsen, who stepped down after the Test series win in Sri Lanka.

During that trip, Johnson continued to struggle, collecting just two wickets in each of the three Test matches, on his first Test tour working with the new bowling coach Craig McDermott. It capped off a below-par 12 months for Johnson, who since the start of the short tour of India in October last year has taken 29 Test wickets at 38.89.

Cooley watched the Sri Lankan series from Australia and said that Johnson looked consistent but he needed to keep working on his wrist position. The upcoming series will be crucial for Johnson, who faces competition from Ryan Harris, Trent Copeland and Peter Siddle for a place in the side, not only in South Africa but for the home Tests against New Zealand and India.

In Johnson's favour is his strong record in South Africa, where in 2009 he picked up 16 wickets at 25, and he was especially venomous in the Johannesburg Test. Australia's two Tests in November will be played at Newlands in Cape Town and the Wanderers in Johannesburg, where Johnson was Man of the Match last time he played there.

"I think the conditions definitely suit the quick bowlers over there and the places we're going to play will definitely give them an advantage," Cooley said. "It will be up to all of us now to pull together and make sure that not only Mitch but the rest of the team are up and firing and building on what we've started in Sri Lanka.

"Mitch has been working closely with Craig McDermott now for a little while. We have a relationship with Mitch over the years and we've seen some ups and downs along the way but fully aware Mitchell is still responsible to go out there and perform.

"From what I saw on TV he looked like he was bowling consistently. He probably needs to make sure things are working out of his wrist as best as they can. I'm sure Craig McDermott has been working on that and I'll pick up with Craig on that as soon as I hit the deck on Monday."

Cooley has spent most of the past five years working closely with Australia's attack as the team's bowling coach, but he stepped away earlier this year to become head coach at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane. His appointment as Australia's interim coach came after he told Cricket Australia he wouldn't be applying for the full-time role.

Instead, he is happy working with the developing players at the Centre of Excellence and taking on roles such as coaching Australia A, which he did on the tour of Zimbabwe in July. On that trip, the offspinner Nathan Lyon did enough to impress the selectors and earn himself a Test debut in Sri Lanka, and Cooley said Lyon was good enough to succeed in South Africa as well.

"Nathan is relatively new in the team but he acquitted himself very well in Zimbabwe and obviously started his career with the Australian team quite nicely," Cooley said. "It's a tough area to bowl finger spin over there [in South Africa], it's a little bit like the Australian conditions, but he's got some great control and has grown with every game so I see him acquitting himself quite nicely if selected."

Cooley will rejoin the Australians at a time of great change, but also of great promise, after their 1-0 series win over Sri Lanka. Tackling South Africa in their own conditions will be a different challenge, but despite being ranked second on the ICC Test table, South Africa have not won a Test series at home since beating Bangladesh in 2008.

"South Africa are always a formidable line-up," Cooley said. "They've got a great bowling line-up and their batsmen, even though they're a little bit older, they're still producing the runs. They sit well above us on the Test table and we'll be working very hard to chase them down."

Both Kolkata Knight Riders and South Australia Redbacks suffered defeats in their opening games, and need quick turnarounds. The Knight Riders are worse off: their campaign has been shorn of momentum after successive losses to Somerset, including one in the qualification round. Gautam Gambhir's return to action after the concussion he suffered in England was closely watched, but fizzled out when he perished first ball. Jacques Kallis and Yusuf Pathan batted extremely well to lift the Knight Riders to 161, but the bowling let them down for the second time in two games, despite not having a perceptible weak link.

South Australia were walloped by the Warriors in their first game, one in which they seemed saddled with one spinner too many. To make matters worse, Shaun Tait endured a forgettable day and was taken apart by JJ Smuts. Coming back from that 53-run hiding will require tremendous depths of resolve, but the fact that their opponents are just as short on confidence should lift their spirits.

Falcons v Zebras at Karachi Live Scorecard

2011-09-27T04:20:00.000-07:00

Seamer Sarfraz Ahmed and left-arm spinner Raza Hasan took seven wickets between them as Sialkot Stallions restricted Hyderabad Hawks to 96 for 8 and went on to win by nine wickets at the National Stadium in Karachi. Sarfraz did the early damage, taking three wickets in his first two overs, leaving Hyderabad 12 for 3. Shahzad Haider and Rizwan Ahmed then put on 51 runs for the fourth wicket but it took them ten overs as they tried to rebuild after the early losses.

Abdur Rehman dismissed Haider for 42, Sarfraz came back to take his fourth wicket, and Hasan took three scalps as Sialkot did not allow Hyderabad's innings to get going. Hasan conceded just 12 runs in his four overs, Sarfraz 13 and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan went for 14. Shoaib Malik ensured Sialkot did not waste time getting to the meagre target, and scored a run-a-ball 50, helping them get there with 20 balls to spare.

Scorecard

Khurram Manzoor's half-century laid the foundation for Karachi Zebras comfortable 44-run win over Quetta Bears at the National Stadium in Karachi. Manzoor and Rameez Aziz got the innings off to a quick start, adding 36 from the first four overs. Anwar Ali then came in and made a rapid 32 as he and Manzoor put on 57. Manzoor eventually fell for 62 in the 16th over but some lusty blows from Akbar-ur-Rehman pushed their total to 172. Quetta started steadily, but Uzair-ul-Haq removed both openers in the sixth over. Abid Ali and Mir Wais kept the innings ticking but Ali's dismissal with the score on 110 triggered a collapse as Quetta lost their last seven wickets for 18 runs.

An all-round bowling effort from Lahore Eagles helped them beat Abbottabad Eagles by 15 runs. Pakistan batsmen Imran Farhat and Taufeeq Umar got Lahore's innings off to a brisk start, with Farhat the more aggressive partner, racing to 43 from 31 balls with four fours and a six. Azhar Ali kept up the momentum once Farhat fell but Lahore weren't able to push on in the closing overs, despite having wickets in hand, as the Abbottabad bowlers kept them to 150. Yasir Hameed and Yasir Shah steadied the Abbottabad innings after the early loss of Ghulam Mohammad, but the innings lost its way once the pair departed. Six bowlers took at least one wicket, but the standout was Junaid Zia, who took 2 for 9 from 3.3 overs. Umar backed up his innings of 35 with 2 from 16 was named the Player of the Match.

Mumbai would be delighted on their win against Chennai in their opening match of this tournament. The last match showed how much of an advantage it was to have 5 overseas players as all had an impact in some way. Lasith Malinga was the match winner and we often talk about him with his bowling but his batting was extraordinary with 37 off 18 balls getting Mumbai over the line. Kieron Pollard bowled very well as he kept the run rate low against Chennai but also managed a good cameo. Aiden Blizzard and Davy Jacobs started off their CLT20 2011 fairly well with good cameos each to get Mumbai off to that quick start. A worry for Mumbai for this match against Trinidad & Tobago is facing the spinners as they had some problems against Chennai with Ashwin and Raina bowling at them.
Trinidad & Tobago have had great memories in the Champions League especially in the 1st season but this year they are without Kieron Pollard. They have qualified to the main group of this tournament after they managed to win their group during the qualifying stage of this tournament. They now face Mumbai and they would love to beat them as Kieron Pollard is featuring in the Mumbai XI instead of opting to play for Trinidad. They have some stars in the line up and have a very strong batting line-up. Barath and Simmons forms a strong opening pair and will be a force to be reckoned with during this tournament if they get in some good form. Ravi Rampaul is also a great inclusion in this squad but the key to this match for Trinidad is how the spinners perform like Badree, Ganga and Narine because if they watched Mumbai vs Chennai they will see their opponents struggled against the spinners.
