It's very simple but very affective! I turned off the lights, asked each one to put their heads down, described a beautiful spring scene, and asked that each student imagine they were laying down in the grass looking up at the clouds. News coverage and Virginia’s use of social media and public speaking opportunities soon brought requests from other schools and organizations. In addition to seeking donations of musical instruments, costumes, art supplies, puppets and craft materials, Virginia fundraises to buy new supplies for schools in need. In its first year, “heARTS” has provided more than $50,000 worth of goods and services that have benefited 4,200 children in the U.S., Haiti, Guatemala and Dominica. This year, we were inspired to make shields. Discussing how knights' shields were designed with symbols that represented their kingdoms, we made our own shields representing who we are.<br /> <br /> 1. Using a shield tracer, make a sloppy copy design on paper.<br /> <br /> 2. When the design is approved, tape paper onto foil.<br /> <br /> 3. Place design on top of magazine. This will give it a little "give" when embossing.<br /> <br /> 4. Trace design using the end of a paintbrush. Press firmly so that it dents into the foil.<br /> <br /> 5. Untape design and trace once more for good measure.<br /> <br /> 6. Color in with marker.<br /> <br /> 7. Cut out shield <i><u>carefully</u></i>.<br /> <br /> 8. Robert Indiana is the perfect artist to introduce during Valentine's Day!<br /> <br /> I liked the idea of something three dimensional, but did not have the budget to buy wooden letters for every student!, so... packing peanuts to add a litte pop would have to do.<br /> <br /> 1. Fold paper in half both ways so you have four squares.<br /> <br /> 2. Each corner was to have a separate design, sort of like a mini painting.<br /> <br /> 3. Trace the letter tracers onto tagboard.<br /> <br /> 4. Cut out and glue on packing peanuts. I drew a "map" on the board for each letter, showing the students how many packing peanuts to get for each letter and where to glue them.
