"The Seamstress" - Oil painting with hummingbird and nest - plus a "Fun Idea"

Some friends of mine recently mailed me a little abandoned "hummingbird nest" that I used for reference in this new piece. I painted this little "hummingbird" sitting on top of a spool of red thread. She is weaving the colors into her nest. This new oil painting will be for sale at my next art show in a few weeks.

Fun Idea:

I have found that if I have colored dryer lint from the dryer, I don't throw it away. I roll it up into a little ball and place it outside in a tree. The birds love to come and pick small pieces of it for their nest building. I don't usually get to see the nests, but I have found some abandoned nests with colored threads and fluff before. It's always a fun discovery.

Every year, on the two weekends around Thanksgiving, the Sonoran Arts League presents a free, self-guided tour of 44 artists studios. This year, 178 artists will be displaying their art in every medium. You can plan your tour to visit as many of the studios you wish through the interactive Web site at:

I will have many of my smaller oil paintings there with birds, wildlife, sports themes and other still-life compositions. I will be in studio #23. This tour will take you through the neighborhoods of the Arizona Desert Foothills in Cave Creek, Carefree and North Scottsdale.

You will find artists working in oil, acrylic, mixed media, ceramic, photography, pastel, watercolor, stone, bronze and jewelry.

Studio#23 is "The Jossy Lownes Studio". It is very easy to find and is just off of Scottsdale Road and Jomax. There are maps online to each of the Hidden In The Hills participants. There is also a wonderful magazine with a complete directory available. You can also just follow the signs which will be posted all over the street during the two weekends of the event.

Studio #23 will also have the contemporary paintings by "Jossy Lownes" who paints in both acrylic and oil. Her latest work is fabulous and you will surely enjoy seeing it.

Also the husband and wife team of "Ralph and Sheri Meldrum." They are masters in the creation of copper art. They make beautiful copper weavings and large mixed media pieces for interior walls.

Also displaying at studio#23 is well known "Plein Air" painter "Becky Joy." Becky is an artist and instructor and travels the world doing workshops. She is famous for her beautiful skies, sunsets and landscapes.

Video Highlights of the 10th Annual Realism Exhibition

I have been so busy lately.... so I never got a chance to post some of the "highlights" from the Realism exhibition before I went to Colorado. There is a nice post/video I just saw on the "Art Renewal Center" blog today that captured many of the fun events from this exciting show. (click on the link above to view).

The show was held in late August in Alexandria, VA at the beautiful "Principle Gallery." There were three wonderful days spent with many of the artists. One of the events included a tour of Washington D.C.'s National Gallery of Art.

My "Bluebirds" oil painting (above) sold. The wonderful music painting below was by a fabulous artist "Alex Zonis." Her work is absolutely amazing, and I enjoyed meeting her so much. Her painting sold opening night. In fact...they sold quite a few paintings on opening night. The crowd was unbelievable and I am so happy that I decided to fly across country for this one.

Bluebird Watching - in Westcliffe

"Bluebird Watching" is one of my oil paintings that sold in Colorado at the "Art For the Sangres." I enjoyed taking pictures of the wildlife during my visit to Colorado. During my drive there I stopped along the way at various rest stops. The distant view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains was amazing.

The Sangre de Cristo Mountains (Spanish for "Blood of Christ) are the southernmost subrange of the Rocky Mountains. They are in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. They have a number of fourteen thousand foot peaks in the Colorado portion, and thirteen thousand foot peaks in New Mexico. The name of the mountains may refer to the occasional reddish hues observed during sunrise and sunset.

I pulled of the road for a few moments at a rest stop on my way into Westcliffe. I couldn't resist photographing this sign on "Bird Watching."

In Westcliffe, Colorado during an early morning walk I could see the mountain bluebirds all along the fence posts.

Taking morning walks past the ranches, this one was an Amish gathering on Sunday morning. It really is very peaceful there.

The sunsets are beautiful too. Here is an amazing picture my cousin Steve took of the sky one evening.

Colorado Road Trip & "Art For The Sangres"

I just got back home from a road trip to Colorado last week for the "Art For The Sangres" art show in Westcliffe, Colorado. It was my first time doing this show and I had a wonderful time. Since I haven't been blogging for quite some time, I thought I better get back to it. My winter art shows will be starting up soon (next month) and there will be so much to share. In this post I just want to share some images from my trip to Colorado.

The day I left Phoenix, it rained all the way to Durango. I stayed the first night in Durango and then went on to Westcliffe the next day. It is quite a long drive but the views were spectacular. All of the fall colors were popping.

I arrived at "Painted View Ranch" to set up my work for the exhibition. This annual event called "Art For the Sangres" is held at this beautiful ranch each year in the Wet Mountain Valley (one of the last great ranching valleys of Colorado.) This art show is a fundraising event to support the San Isabel Land Protection Trust. By purchasing art, 40% went to protecting land, water, and wildlife. I was very happy to be a part of this years show along with 23 other fine artists.

I spent a day 4 wheeling way up in the mountains. The scenery and wildlife there is amazing. I loved it.

Two of my favorite artists were also doing this show, and I was so excited that I finally got to meet them in person. Adele Earnshaw from New Zealand. She is an amazing artist. Also "Joe Garcia" a fabulous wildlife painter. My parents purchased a piece from him many years ago, so it was really fun to finally meet him. I have to say all of the art there was gorgeous!

I have to mention one of my favorite things we did while in Westcliffe, was visit the "Loan-A-Ranger Pawn shop.' It was fabulous for photographing objects for some future still-life paintings. The owner was so kind to allow me to do that. I was searching for a "banjo" because I needed some pictures for a future painting. We found a banjo too and my friends ended up purchasing it. They live in Westcliffe, and now can polish up their skills at playing the banjo. We had a great time!

Yellow Lab oil painting - Step by Step - My Continuing Progress - (2nd post)

My Continuing Progress...

Ok....Now getting back to where I left off the other day ... on Post #1 (Painting in progress of the yellow lab named Emma)

The image above is from the first post. To refresh, I had taken a photograph of my friend's lab "Emma" while she was playing fetch in the river. I chose one of my favorite images above to work from in this painting. You can refer to my first post to see more images from the early stages of this oil painting. (Click on images to see them larger)

Today's progress....

After a few days break I got back to painting on this canvas today. This next image is where I began continuing to paint in the fur on the tail and back legs. (There is a lot of work to do yet on the water droplets, so for now they are just simply blocked in with my first layer of color.)

Next: Painting in the first layers of the wet fur and working my way down to where the fur meets the water....

Here I just begin to paint in the area of the water. This is only a first layer and I will probably do many layers allowing each to dry in between to achieve the realistic look I am going for.

I also will do several layers of paint to achieve the look of wet fur. I worked my way down to the water in this stage while I allow my first layer of fur to dry.

I am using a medium called "Walnut Alkyd Medium." I am mixing it with my oil paint to help it flow smoothly. A friend had given me this bottle to try and I really like it. It really helps to move the paint around when working into a dry surface.

I also really like to use"Lucas 1862 Finest Artists Oil Paints."

This paintbrush also is very helpful to achieve the "wet fur" look. I actually paint with it putting the pointed part of the brush down and moving it upwards. It is a 1/4" Dagger by Princeton Art & Brush Co. #3050DG

Here I am continuing to paint in the beginning of the water motion....

10th Annual International Guild of Realism Exhibition is opening in a few weeks....

The next "International Guild of Realism" exhibition is opening soon at the "Principle Gallery" in Alexandria, Virginia. I am very pleased to have a painting juried into this wonderful exhibition and look forward to attending the opening.

One of my favorite birds to paint are "hummingbirds." This is a brand new oil painting of an "Anna's Hummingbird." They are all around in my backyard and are fun to watch. The scientific name is "Calypte anna."

About the Anna's Hummingbird...

Anna’s Hummingbirds are among the most common hummingbirds along the Pacific Coast, yet they're anything but common in appearance. With their iridescent emerald feathers and sparkling rose-pink throats, they are more like flying jewelry than birds. Though no larger than a ping-pong ball and no heavier than a nickel, Anna’s Hummingbirds make a strong impression. In their thrilling courtship displays, males climb up to 130 feet into the air and then swoop to the ground with a curious burst of noise that they produce through their tail feathers.

Habitat

Anna’s Hummingbirds are common in yards, parks, residential streets, eucalyptus groves, riverside woods, savannahs, and coastal scrub. They readily come to hummingbird feeders and flowering plants, including cultivated species in gardens.

Backyard Tips

Anna’s Hummingbirds are welcome backyard birds and are easy to attract. Set out a hummingbird feeder, then mix your own hummingbird food using one part sugar to four parts water. Don't use honey or food coloring. Anna’s don’t migrate much, so don’t be surprised if the bird visits your feeder all year long.

Find This Bird

The easiest place to see Anna's Hummingbirds is at a feeder; otherwise keep a sharp eye out near large, colorful blossoms during the spring, especially near eucalyptus trees and cultivated gardens. Look for males are often seen high in the branches of a small tree or bush, singing loudly.

Painting in progress - Yellow Lab - Step by Step

"Oil Painting of Emma (the yellow lab) In-Progress"

A few months ago I took care of my friends yellow lab "Emma "while they were away in Italy. I had also taken some photos of her swimming in the river and decided that one of those images might make a nice oil painting for one of my upcoming art shows. I also wanted to try and paint "water", which I have never done before. So this is my progress so far....

I began the painting with a few coats of "black gesso:

Letting each coat of gesso dry thoroughly and sanding in between as necessary. Once the gesso had set up ( a day or two ), I painted in my oil ground. It is my deep green background color.

After the underpainting was dry, I chalked in the position of the dog. In the image above I had just started to block in the color of "Emma."

This fun new oil painting is for an upcoming art show in Colorado. It features a little "chipping sparrow" sitting on top of a vintage "Coors" beer can. I was recently invited to participate in an upcoming art show in "Westcliffe, Colorado." I want to have some artwork that will have a "Colorado" theme to it. I specialize in painting "birds in art" and thought this little painting might be fun and a good fit.

The show is called "Art For the Sangres" and is held in a beautiful refurbished barn, providing the perfect atmosphere to enjoy and buy art while at the same time supporting important land conservation work. This particular show benefits the "San Isabel Land Protection Trust" which works with and helps landowners protect important ranches, farms and forest lands, wildlife habitat, and scenic views.

Painting of Peached Faced Lovebirds finished!

I just finished my oil painting of the "Peach Faced Lovebirds" for my client. They are sitting in a beautiful wood turned bowl that he made. These birds are also known as "rosy-faced lovebirds."

You can see the in-progress images of the "lovebirds" on my earlier blog post. I had at first painted in the feet of the birds as if they were clutching the bowl, but we both decided that it was a cuter painting without the big ugly feet that these birds actually have.

The birds were fun to paint and I think their personality came through in the painting. It made me laugh often when I would walk into the studio. I wonder what they were saying?

Painting of Peach-Faced Lovebirds - In Progress 1

Here are a couple of photographs of some Peach faced lovebirds that visited my yard in Phoenix not long ago. Scroll down to see more images of my painting commission in progress.

A Little info first.....

The rosy-faced lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis), also known as the rosy-collared or peach-faced lovebird, is a species of lovebird native to arid regions in southwestern Africa such as the Namib Desert. A loud and constant chirper, these birds are very social animals and often congregate in small groups in the wild. They eat throughout the day and take frequent baths. Coloration can vary widely among populations. Plumage is identical in males and females. Lovebirds are renowned for their sleep position in which they sit side-by-side and turn their faces in towards each other. Also, females are well noted to tear raw materials into long strips, "twisty-tie" them onto their backs, and fly substantial distances back to make a nest.

(There are many flocks of these birds that have settled in the Arizona desert)

THE IDEA

At my recent show in Scottsdale, I received a commission to do an oil painting of two peach-faced lovebirds. My client had taken a beautiful photograph of a pair of these lovebirds sitting in one of his cactus. He also happens to make wonderful wood turned pieces of art.

The idea was to paint the lovebird pair sitting on top of one of his own wood turned bowls. I selected the bowl that I thought would look best with the photo I had of his lovebirds. I did a few sketches of it and then got the go ahead to paint it.

Here is my initial sketch along with his bowl and image of the lovebirds....

Beginning the painting here....

I have already painted in my background in oil and allowed it to dry. I then chalked in my design and begin to paint the lovebirds. It will take many layers to create the realistic look of the birds. Paying close attention to the light and dark shadows in the bird feathers.

At this point I begin to do some of the detail in the wood grain of the bowl. I also will begin to lighten up the background area around the vase.

The "Northern Cardinal"is the State bird of Virginia

This is a photo of my finished painting of the "Virginia State Bird." I used part of a vintage map of Virginia in the background and painted the "bird" in oil over the map. I also use one of the actual "state bird" postage stamps in the finished painting.

Here are a few of my earlier "State Bird" paintings.....

Cornell Lab of Ornithology - All About Birds

Here are some in progress photos...

The male Northern Cardinal is perhaps responsible for getting more people to open up a field guide than any other bird. They’re a perfect combination of familiarity, conspicuousness, and style: a shade of red you can’t take your eyes off. Even the brown females sport a sharp crest and warm red accents. Cardinals don’t migrate and they don’t molt into a dull plumage, so they’re still breathtaking in winter’s snowy backyards. In summer, their sweet whistles are one of the first sounds of the morning. I just finished up this new oil painting "Farewell My Lovely" with the sweet little unsuspecting bird and the "not so friendly looking" cat. The classic books that I selected for this painting are "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by "Hemingway", and also "Farewell My Lovely" by "Raymond Chandler."

This oil painting measures 9x12" and is a one of a kind.

This painting will be at the opening of the "Celebration of Fine Art" in Scottsdale, Arizona. The show opens on January 17th and runs through March 29th, 2015. It brings together 100 of the finest artists from across the country.

Richeson 75 (2014) - "Animals, Birds & Wildlife" competition catalogs are out

I just received my catalog today from the "Richeson 75"- "Animals, Birds & Wildlife" competition. I was excited to have 5 pieces selected for the 2014 catalog. Above, my painting titled "The Playoffs" made it into the top 75.

"Bluebird Watching"

I finished up a new oil painting for my next art show. It is called "Bluebird Watching." I placed a pair of binoculars on top of some old field guilds including one by Stokes, and a book on "bluebirds" that belonged to my late father. The "bluebird" is standing on some beaver bark sticks looking down, as if he is the one doing all of the watching.

I started this painting a while back on a larger canvas size. It was bothering me that everything was bigger than life, so I scratched the first painting and began the 14 x 11" size. It just seemed more natural to me to paint it true to size.

Below is an image of the finished painting all framed up. It will be for sale at the next "Celebration of Fine Art" show in Scottsdale, Arizona. The show opens on January 17th and runs for 10 weeks. This show brings together 100 of the finest artists from across the country. Painters, jewelers, sculptors, wood turners, ceramic artists will all be together under one roof working together.
