Macam dah terlalu lama aku tak update apa2 kat photoblog ku ne. So no promise made that aku akan teruskan update. To many thing have happens and i think its now for me to be honest to my self.

Blogging ne mcm marketing. Untuk capai target, mesti ada advertising yang power. Aku takda network yg kuat jadi tak hairan lah nobody ever drop here. Last update adalah dlm tahun 2012, wow, what did happen alon that time. Byk catching up yg perlu dibuat.

Mungkin better aku post gambar2 lama je kan. Easier dr update setiap masa. Dulu ku plan nak update base on event yg aku cover. Tp yalah. Byk benda berlaku, jd takdalah nak update benda ne selalu.

DPP Tutorial : Merging Startrail image using DPP Composition Tool

Some of you must have tried this tool but doesn’t have any idea what does this little tool can or can’t do. 1stly if you are not familiar with blending mode that was introduce in photoshop so understanding the composition method (blending mode in CS5) would be a bit tricky for amature photographers that want to get in the digital editing world. In this tutorial, i’ll show you how to do blending or merging long exposure photos to create a StarTrail effect. Sure you can try this on light trail and light painting too. It doesn’t differ much.

The Composition Tool is a powerfull tool in DPP. Other than merging photos, you can do a lot of simple photo blending that often can only be done in photoshop. Thanks Canon for giving it free too. Of cos there’s a lot of restriction to add more creativity to the final product but DPP is for Canon Users who don’t want to purchase other photo software. The blending mode only work with adding foreground image but with the right method and technics, you can add more umphhh to your photo without spending more money on purchasing and training using the photoshop software.

Firstly you have to get out there and try to catch the stars. You can google up for tutorial from blogs, youtube and flickr. So after you finish photoshooting, open up your DPP...

Select the photos that you just taken. It can be either CR2 or JPG format. It doesn’t matter anyway. But before merging, check and edit each of the photos if needed so you would get a crispier and better result.

After you know which photo to merge, you can start the Composition Tool.

The Composition Tool window will open and show the 1st image that you’d selected from the preview window.

Click on the Foreground image drop box and a list of the photos name will drop. Select the 2nd photo that you wish to add. Noted that you have to remember the sequence and if you shoot in JPEG-RAW. Make sure to select the CR2 file if your 1st image is a RAW image or just settled with the JPEG version.

This is the crueltial part. The Compostion method is a way to BLEND the photos, to create a photo that only blends light. You must use the “LIGHTEN” mode. “average” and “add” can do also but the best result is by using the lighten mode.

After selecting the 2nd photo, click on the continue button to enable you to add more photos to the foreground.

After adding a few photos, you should have seen something like this. This is what happen if you add multiple layers of a same exposures, the star will form a line. If you are seeing this, Congratulation! you are halfway through. Keep on repeating the step....

Don’t panic if you get this type of window, it just mentioning the photo is currently in merging processed. Continue till the last frame of your shot.

At the end of the frame, The stars would form a line and this is what we called StarTrails. Star Trail is another addiction to night photographers. It will crank up your battery so prepared a few spare batteries if you are planning to go for a shot. There’s are better and easier software for StarTrails merging. But in this tutorial i just want to share how you can do a startrail processing with DPP. You can view the final photo below.

DPP BASIC SETTING FOR WINDOW PC

It’s initial to know your software setting before starting to use your DPP to correct or apply adjustment to your photo. It doesn’t matter what kind of software we use either its DPP, Photoshop or other third party photo editing software, setting the software preferences or setup or profile is the first thing what you should start with if you want to get the right result. Look it at this way, if you want to bake a cake, you have to know the right ingredient, the temperature, the amount of water and etc. Doing without setting up the right ingredient and tools would get you halfway with unfinished product.

Setting up your the DPP will help you to get more accurate colour result in editing and great printing results from your home printer. As one of the major problem with printing a photo is colour produce from the printed is not the same as we see in the monitor. This simple setup would help to get better result but it depends also on your PC and monitor type too. This tutorial is done on a ACER monitor. So please check with your monitor vendor the colour preset that their are using. Note that there have been tons type of technology on colour rendering nowadays.

So lets start by opening the DPP and head to the “Tools” bar and click on the “Preferences...” or by hitting the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl+K”.

A float window will come out like below.

Open up the “General Settings” and check if the all the checkbox are the same as the picture above. If you are on a slow PC, you can save time viewing RAW image by selecting the High speed checkbox under the VIEWING AND SAVING RAW IMAGES. Note that this would affect your end photo if you don’t convert the photo to JPEG.

Lets move to the View Setting panel. I would recommend to leave this as default. The only thing that i changed here is the RAW AND JPEG setting which i select the checkbox of the Display only CR2 images for CR2 and JPEG files Of The Same Name.

That also goes to the Tool Palette panel. Leave the setting default and only check the red line box above is the same setup or not.

On the Color Management panel is kinda optional. Canon by default would set the WORK COLOR SPACE to SRGB. In my case, at some point i have to transfer the photo to photoshop for extra editing so i set the Color Work Space to Adobe RGB. So i wont need to set the color to Adobe RGB when i transfer to Photoshop and that save me a lot of time. That goes also to my Display setting for the DPP which i also change to Adobe RGB.

If you are curious what type of other RGBs that are available. Just click on the Browse button and take a look around.

Last but not least is the printing settings, this is a bit optional. It would be easier if connected to a Canon Printer. It would detect the printer and apply the best setting recommend by the software. Other brand printer would acquire the printer software itself either it can automatically set the best setting if not then you have to manual set it up. For the photo above i set the LED to focus(Beam) so it produce a sharp light and gelled it with a purple gel for the light painting figure. after that i set the flashlight to spread mode to light myself. you wouldnt thought how a small multipurpose flashlight can help to produce a very simple yet attractive light painting.

Have you ever wonder how do i make those lines of light painting in my photos? yes i do have special light tool, those tools does take you apart from the other light painters but i'm not an electronic geek or something. so put aside that i DIYed or customize tool.

The light tool i want to introduce here is a LED strip called PVCE 48-LED. dont ask me why is it named that way. i donno. that's kinda funny and weird characteristic with China item anyway. with no specific name whatsoever.

These LED strip comes with 2 colors. White and Blue. The LED brightness is very high. you have to set the aperture to F11 or higher to get the LED line to be visible in your photo. i mean really thin and sharp look. setting the aperture lower than F11 would effect the light to look like a light saber.

The LED was designed for cars so the built quality is very solid, vibration-resistant, flexible, long life LED and waterproof built.

Plug it to a 12v battery connection and its cleared to go. its about 48cm long and come with a tap switch for ON and OFF.

Dont be fool by the colour produce by the LED here cos i was playing around with the WB of my camera.

DPP TUTORIAL - HDR

USING HDR TOOL IN DPP (Window 7 64bit)

The HDR tool was introduce as the latest DPP update v3.11.26 from Canon with their OEM photo tool that come bundle with the Digital Photo Professional (DPP). If you are not on that version it is advice that you update your DPP tool to the latest version to get your DPP to be able to use this function. To be honest, this tool is nothing if compared to 3rd party HDR software such as Photomatix Pro. It only gives you the basic functionality. This version currently only enables you to merge 3 exposures only. But nothing beats free software.

Now, to create a HDR photo, you have to understand the technique first before you can go to the software part. There’s a lot of tutorial on the net on how to photograph a HDR photos. Just google for that and after you understand or get a hang on it, u can test it out on your DPP based on this tutorial of cos.

Open the DPP software and look for the photo that you want to merge to HDR. In this tutorial i’ll gonna choose a landscape photo. These was taken with my Canon EOS 60D.

First we need to check if the photo is a part of the 3 photos that we taken. Right Click on the file and select “info”. Something like this would open for you to see the setting details. The setting used to photograph this is AV/aperture mode, Aperture set to F16, AEB +1/0/-1 in SRAW mode. Check the photo below for details.

If you have a bad memory mesmerizing numbers, i would recommend you to list down the file name of the 3 exposures that you choose.

After finish identifying which exposure to select in the HDR. Click the Tool tab and Select to start the HDR Tool.

Now you know why i said to jot down the file name first. a window will open and ask you to pick the other 2 exposure. The other trick is to select the 3 file first by pressing "shift + select" or "ctrl+select" before starting the HDR tool.

the "Auto Align" check box should be selected if you do the AEB hand held. If you taken the shot with a tripod, you can just abandoned the checkbox. So now to see how does the 3 exposures ends as a HDR image. click the "Start HDR" button.

Now after the exposures merge process. The end file should look similar like this. The Natural preset is the default preset and there are a few other preset provide by Canon for your testing and to give some idea incase you dont see any different.

Here is some of the default setup for the preset;

1) Natural ; So from the name you should know the preset is to keep the photo as natural as it could but still produce the dynamic of a HDR photo.

2) Art Bold : add more contrast and details to the strengh of the photo.

3) Art Vivid : Add more saturation and colors to the photo.

4) Art Standard : Give balance to the brightness and saturation but still keeping the detail enhanced.

5) Art Embossed : Add more chrome effect to the photo by enhancing the brightness and contrast.

6) Custom : Experimenting with the slide bar till you find something that interest you. the Red box is to adjust the toning and colors. The green box is to enhance the details such as Unsharp Mask. I would recommend to select the natural preset and proceed in photoshop or Lightroom to enhance the colors and details. Or any third party software you can get on.

To save the end result is just by clicking the Save As button. you will have the authority to rename the file, select the location to save the jpeg file and change the resolution if you wish to resize it.

Now you have your first HDR photo ready to be posted to facebook.

If you dont like how the finishing end of the HDR photo. you can experiment more with other type of scene, lighting and colours.

The time we have now is borrowed and not owned by us. there's a time in your life where you have to choose to pursuit or left it behind or keep it for other time. Stopping doesn't mean you are quitting. to focus to one thing and make that thing happend require a lot of sacrifice and hardwork. i realize there's no easy way to go there and its good to take a break and re-strategies to see how far have we gone. dont you think so?
