Shepard Fairey: Supply and Demand

Here's an edited bit of text about and including quotes form Shepard Fairey (Obey) that we found interesting and gives a good background to Shepard and his work if you still haven't heard of him. Original text an be found here (best give them a mention).

Now the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston has organized the first museum exhibit of Fairey’s art. The exhibit of screen prints, stencils, stickers, illustrations and works on wood, metal and canvas showcases Fairey’s favourite subjects: portraits of countercultural revolutionaries, politicians, mainstream heroes and punk, rap and rock musicians.

All of the art appears in Fairey’s signature style of black, red and off-white graphics, which samples and recycles motifs from the Russian Revolution, Mao’s China and W.P.A. propaganda posters. There’s also a nod to Andy Warhol’s portrait art. The work is often multilayered and collaged with wallpaper patterns, stock certificates, stamps and the like. Given Fairey’s primary reputation as a street artist, the big surprise is encountering these labor-intensive pieces in person and discovering how drop-dead beautiful they are.

The night of his ICA opening, Fairey was picked up by the police for his citywide campaign of urban graffiti (condoned by the institute as part of the exhibit). Simultaneously, several prestigious art critics chastised him for losing his “street cred” by agreeing to design Saks Fifth Avenue’s windows and shopping bags in New York City. And he is being sued for abuse of the “fair use” copyright law by Mannie Garcia, the freelance photojournalist who took the original HOPE photograph of Obama in 2006 while the latter was listening to Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas at a conference.

None of this seems to intimidate Fairey. He has been arrested more than a dozen times in his career for invading environments with his posters and street art. From the start, he unabashedly worked as an independent designer for corporate clients. He’s now countersuing Garcia, explaining that he found the unidentified photo on the Web.

Fairey’s work operates at the intersection of beauty, politics and advertising, producing a collision of ideas and imagery. He’s an artist who believes there are issues worth advancing, and he’s not afraid to use visual pleasure for politically seductive purposes. More unforgivable in the art world is the populist appeal of his art, which is something that always makes the intellectual powers-that-be suspicious.
Fairey writes in his museum catalog that early on, he was adamant that “people should not submit to any attempts to herd and manipulate them.” At age 19, while a student at the Rhode Island School of Design, he began making black-and-white stickers of the deceased wrestler Andre the Giant, whom he admired for having overcome adversity. He pasted them around town as a lark.

“I was having such a good time putting up the stickers,” he writes, “and in doing so I observed some interesting sociological phenomena. … The way I interpreted it, people become numb to their environment, and they need certain experiences to snap them out of their trance. … I felt that people didn’t really question things and thus allowed themselves to be manipulated by advertising and other social structures, and the idea of phenomenology, reawakening a sense of wonder about one’s environment, seemed to be the effect that my stickers had been having.”
He concluded that his sticker campaign fostered significant dialogue.

Soon Fairey began adding the word “OBEY” to his posters. Once again, he seemed to question people’s robotic behavior. Since then, by his own count he has made 2.5 million stickers, 45,000 posters and thousands of spray paint stencils of subjects such as terrorism and environmental destruction.

Among Fairey’s most inspired artworks are his album covers and music posters, corporate efforts that help pay for his street art. “No matter how much I love art,” he once wrote, “or try to convince myself of its relevance in society, the fact remains that music is a lot cooler and way more able to reach people’s hearts and minds."

UK Runnings has been one of the leading mixtape series for home-grown Hip-Hop since 2001. In 2009 we have seen Tricksta up his grind with a release of a number of quality tapes including a mixtape with Big Narstie ‘The Big Man Returns’ as well as his double CD collaboration with Lunatrix from HHB Radio entitled ‘Flying The Flag’. Also Tricksta started a few new volumes, one of them being ‘The Digital Revolution’ a FREE download mixtape series to help and promote home-grown acts to the MP3 community.

‘The Digital Revolution’ (sponsored by SturbanClothing) (now rebranded sturbanclothing.com) series started three days after Tricksta’s birthday on February 18th 2009 when he dropped the first volume hosted by long-time friend and business partner and talented rapper LATE. The response to this was huge so Tricksta promised to drop them on a regular basis so here we are on 11th April 2009 and the second volume is here.

This time your host for the proceedings is talented London rapper M9 from the Triple Darkness camp. He set the underground on fire after the release of his superb album ‘144,000’ which features Jehst, Bronze Nazerth and production from Jon Phonics, Beat Butcha and Creamo. On the mix M9 gives up some unreleased material as well as hosting the proceedings which include tracks from the cream of the UK scene.

Where are you from and what was it like growing up there?
I'm from London, but I've lived between London and Bristol really, Bristol's a lot like London just much smaller, when ' was younger I found London kinda boring, I never had as much freedom up there as a kid.

How did you get your name and is there a story behind it?
Streetz is in the Streetz and its just that alone really!

Was there a situation or a person who inspired you to rap?
My pops always encouraged me to do my music, but i guess i was inspired to start rapping when I first heard the "Showbiz and Ag" "Goodfellas" album, my bredren came over from America and he had all these cd's and tapes, that was really when i knew what I wanted to be around.

Tell us about your latest release.
"Handle ya Buisiness" is the 21 track mix-tape showing people what I'm about really.

mix-tape 'Bootleg This' which is already manufactured and will be in stores very soon!!

What do you prefer; playing live, recording in the studio or battling?
Recording in the studio right now, but playing live is high up on the list, as long as the new material is ready to promote I'm good!

Sub-timed, nah jokes, driven, I guess I'm quite a fast moving person!

What do you enjoy doing the most?
Recording new music!

What’s your favourite clothing label?

These day's Juno's kinda good still for getting a wide range of music online but Scenario or Deal Real back then for what they were on!

Yes people it's the LAST UrbanShop podcast but don't fret it will be back next week under a new name, or it could be back next week under the same name knowing us as work that needs doing may not get done.

So What's this rambling all about? As you may or may not know we are having to change our name yet again, first it was headstrong and now SturbanClothing but for legal reasons out of our control we have got to change it, you can read full story here. We are not giving out our new name yet but we have a name, have bought up domains, ran it by our solicitors and done new logos, just need to swap the domain online and when that is done we will let you know not no fear has there will be a redirect so you can use the old url.

Where are you from and what was it like growing up there?
First and foremost I am Nigerian. I was born in London and grew up in Los Angeles.Growing up in these totally different countries have been instrumental towards broadening my horizons as a person and as an artist. Spending most of my teenage years in LA definitely taught me to be laid back as well as staying sharp and keeping my eyes on the prize.Living in London now gives me a hustler’s edge because its a fast paced environment and you definitely have to go out and get yours, and finally spending time in Nigeria structured my mentality, cultural awareness and cemented my self worth.

How did you get your name and is there a story behind it?
I was actually thinking about that the other day..ha!hhmmnn...well i am a slick individual naturally, be it through my clothing co-ordination(the swagger’s always tight..ha!) , or verbal articulation, i just exhude slickness, so i guess when it was time to step in the game..the name really was a no brainer..plus i just rhymed slick..so why not SLICKMOUTH?

Was there a situation or a person who inspired you to rap?
Boi..rapping is an expression of self..and I really always felt like there was so much to in me i needed express to a lot of like and unlike minded people out there...but when I heard Big Daddy Kane’s furious delivery..mixed with slick rick’s ever so smooth braggadocio, I was hooked on this artform we call hip hop.then I began to hone my skills by listening to the like of Nas, Jay-Z, the D.O.C and a whole lot more to mention.

Tell us about your latest release.
My forthcoming project which has already been recorded and packaged,is titled ‘SUPERSTAR’ , which really is a side by side walk with the listeners, taking you through moments of doubt, appraisal, happiness, sorrows in the life of an aspiring superstar.so expect to hear realness, excitement and most of all poetic lyricism interwoven perfectly with charismatic delivery..you would definitely not be disappointed.

What do you prefer; playing live, recording in the studio or battling?
A few months ago I would have told you definitely recording in the studio because there is a certain buzz u get from having a mental picture of what you want your tracks to sound like , to actually hearing the finished product..it's amazing.
But now I have recently fallen in love with stage performance...when you get a first hand reaction of your fans to your music, you get the bopping heads, clapping hand and fulfilled souls..there is nothing that rivals that! Definitely stage shows....and as for battling...hip hop started on proving yourself as a worthy mc..so I did battle a bit in the earlier stages of my career as a rapper but now its my least favourite, but don’t get it twisted I still have rapper’s skeletons in the dungeon from lyrical incisions ..haha1 I'm still gully with it!

How would you describe your personality?
I'm just that guy! You know that guy that you jus like to chill with cos he’s just real, and he always knows what to say..hence the name slickmouth..yeah..I'm that guy! ha!

What do you enjoy doing the most?
Listening and making good music, chillin with loved ones, and just acting totally silly! ha

What’s your favourite clothing label?
Honestly...I don’t have 1, plus im not even trying to endorse anyone on here until i get sponsored by one of them..haha! but ill say for now I'm digging the Kid Robot t’s they outlandish n colourfull..and thats me.

Do you ever buy clothes or music on-line?
I'm an E-bay guy so..you’ll catch me in a bidding way with some Japanese guy for some bape jeans ..ha!

As for music..yeah I do buy certain albums online...but mostly i like to walk into the stores so I can check the credits etc

What is your favourite record shop and why?
I don’t have one...actuali I lie..there used to be one in Carnarby Street I forgot the name...the dude was so knowledgeable about hip hop....he knew everything about the records so I used to end up buying bout 6 albums when I only went in to browse...haha! and I never regretted those purchases..but unfortunately the store was shut down...shout out to him wherever he is..ha!

With so many artists out there, what are you doing different to get heard?
I am simply just doing me..there are so many artists out there doin' what they think is hot to get noticed, but ill rather just be myself and slowly but certainly draw in my own loyal followers who are captivated by my realness, charisma and most of all down to earth approach which is very relevant in my music, and may I add exciting too..ha!

After a bit of uncertainty about the name change the heads that be have finally come out kicking and punching and announced that Headstrong/SturbanClothing/whatever will continue however we are not giving the name or url away quite yet but it should all be done this week.

There's a new prize draw gone live, this is so funny our mate at Fly53 printed a sample run of some t-shirts and as the owner said to me "there is no way these will be made and would not get past copyright". So they had 20 and gave us a bunch to give away even if you don't want to enter shoot over to the prize draw and see what trouble these cheeky boys could have got into with this design. No prize for guessing who would have been the opponent or who would have won;-)

Is this the end of TheUrbanShop?

There’s been a story to tell that I have been dying to tell for months now and I wish it was better news but here goes.

In 1999 I was employed by Headstrong Ltd to help set up and run an online men’s clothing website. Shortly after joining they dismissed my immediate manager and put me in his position as top dog.

Now lets zoom on a few years, the guys that owned Headstrong Ltd were niceish people far to much money and very busy making more, they would not really let me run Headstrong and so it never did develop as a viable business. So in 2003 the one owner remaining came to me saying hat they were closing down headstrong and offered me another position in telecoms company he owned. I love Headstrong and the whole business I had been running with a passion and so agreed to take Headstrong of his hands and run it.

Lets zoom now to 2006, I was still friendly with the owner of Headstrong Ltd and maybe foolishly I would give honest answers to how the business was doing, after all I was very proud of what I had turned Headstrong into it was now a viable business and in the first year of owning it I had increased sales by 500%. So here’s the crunch I didn’t actually own the domain name and asked that it be transferred to my name but that was not to happen. Headstrong Ltd realised that there was a buck to be made and instead of giving over the domain or indeed selling it they offer to rent it to me for 5 years for the sum of £250,000 yes that’s not a misprint.

Hello theurbanshop, we basically changed the name over to a domain I owned rebranded the site and after 6 months were back up and running and all lived happy ever after, er no that only happens in fairy tales. Because of our previous experience we though ok this time we will trademark our name and since 2006 with have been in a legal battle with a Chinese ladies fashion manufactures called “Urban Shock” who say there could be confusion between our names.

This battle has raged for 3 years and twice we have won but yesterday the judgement was overturned and we lost, with barristers at £3000 a pop (that’s day to you and me) we are not sure if we can continue has this judgement means we will have to change our name again. So it’s easy running an online shop isn’t it?

We have options, appeal, change our name and rebrand, give up(not really in our nature) but with the financial climate as it is right now we may have no choice.

Obey wins Brit Insurance Design of the Year

Illustrator Shepard Fairey aka Obey who's famous poster depicting a moody, mystical Barack Obama gazing into the great future, won the Brit Insurance Design of the Year, picked by a panel of greats and goods including Alan Yentob and Paola Antonelli, curator of architecture and design at New York's Museum of Modern Art. It was, apparently, chosen as "most innovative and forward thinking design of the past 12 months".
