Viva Magenta Pantone Party 2023

Project Run and Play is once again rounding up creations using the Pantone Color of the Year. For 2023, Pantone declared Viva Magenta to be the 'it' color. "Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative. It is an animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement." Boy, do they know how to describe a color!?!

I was tasked with selecting the best fabric representing Viva Magenta from Elliott Berman Textiles. With Tandy's supervision, we landed on an Italian abstract print viscose challis. When the fabric arrived, I was a tad jealous it wasn't for me. While I haven't necessarily made anything for myself in such a bold print, the feel of this fabric is pretty dreamy. And, no, I'm not obligated to say so.

Tandy has a much loved square neck dress from Target that was getting too short, so I did my best to recreate it with the Squared Away Dress pattern from Project Run and Play. The result looks drastically different from the original pattern, but you can see from the altered pattern pieces below, the changes weren’t that dramatic. I created a long puff sleeve by straightening the sides, spreading sections of the pattern piece, and adding ¾” to the sleeve head. I lengthened the front and back bodice and added width at the center fold to create gathers at the neckline. Through my initial trial version, I discovered I could safely omit the back closure. The bottom skirt is a gathered rectangle.

Avery and I were thrilled that there was just enough fabric left to make an Evergreen Skirt for her. This pattern has so many length options, but we were pretty limited with yardage at this point. The bottom tier is cut between the ruffle and short tier height to accommodate what I had left.

Teens and pre-teens are hard to please, but these were a success. Tandy wore her dress to a Daddy/Daughter Dance, so it must have passed the test.

Boba Tea Party 11th Birthday

For her 11th birthday, Tandy waffled between a small sleepover and a larger group party for weeks. About 2 weeks out she declared she wanted a boba party. I was skeptical on how we would pull it off at first, until I started thinking of it as a Boba Tea Party. We quickly latched on to the idea of a par-tea and plans started taking shape.

The boba party decor is very simplistic. The "Let's Par-tea" balloon banner from Amazon set the stage. I used my Silhouette cutting machine to create the boba cup garland. The Boba Tea plush pillows made cute additions that have now transitioned to Tandy's bed.

I never before considered how many ways you can use boba! We provided 3 flavors of popping boba to top bowls of ice cream, and topped fruit salad cups with tapioca boba pearls. Both versions of boba are delicious, and I highly recommend adding them to fruit for a special treat. We served sliders, pigs in a blanket, and Chex mix for savory sustenance too.

I really debated on the best way to serve the bubble boba tea. There are tons of homemade recipes online, we probably could have called our favorite local boba shop to cater, and World Market sells a canned option. After a comparative taste test of prepacked boba tea for ease and cost savings, we settled on Joyba Bubble Tea. The Joyba Tea comes with cute packaging and an extendable straw attached.

In addition to the popping boba topped ice cream, there had to be cake. Tandy loves to look over my shoulder at a few of her favorite bakers in my Instagram feed. One of those is Sugar and Sparrow, and she happens to have a Sweet & Salty Pretzel Nutella Cake Recipe. Tandy loves those side by side pretzel Nutella snacks, so this was an easy choice. I made a double batch of cake in order to have 4 (6") layers (We have two layers in the freezer for a later use). After stacking the cakes, I trimmed down the sides, so the cake is a bit narrower at the base. The top "lid" of the cake is the original frosting color. I added additional brown coloring to achieve the tea shade for the majority of the cake. The boba pearls are actually licorice drops. Our local tea shop gave us an extra straw to use as the cake topper. While the cake tasted delicious, the tall skinny shape made slicing a bit of a disaster, so be warned.

A game and a craft are activities we try to include at every birthday party. The Etsy shop HooHoo & Mouse created a custom listing for us with their Boba Magnet craft kit. We didn't need the paint and did need extra wood boba pieces. I really appreciated their quick and accommodating customer service. The tiny boba pieces proved a bit challenging for the 11 year olds to paint, but their creativity showed through regardless.

I once again transformed one of our cornhole boards to fit a party theme by covering it in brown wrapping paper; last time was for Tandy's Cherry On Top party. After I drew out a cup of tea, Tandy shaded in the tea with pink chalk and the straw with green. Then, we glued on felt circles for boba. The Boba Toss for candy or bouncy ball prizes was a hit.

Tandy had fun assembling the boba tea party favors for each guest as the RSVP's rolled in. She filled 24oz wide mouth mason jars for boba with tissue paper and cute boba stickers. We used the free boba bes-teas svg to create vinyl decals for each glass and personalized the lid.

Each year I think, "This will be the last big birthday party." Tandy has other ideas. Once she gets in the party planning mode, one thing leads to another. She actually started her list of ideas before I committed to anything. I can't wait to see the parties she plans in her future.

Very Peri Pantone Party

In the whirlwind that has characterized the start to 2022, did you catch the latest color announced by Pantone as the color of the year? It's Very Peri, "encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone." As a huge fan of lavender, I can appreciate Very Peri as a close cousin.

With the announcement of the color of the year, Project Run + Play hosts an event that combines patterns from their shop with fabrics featuring the Pantone color theme. Last year, I participated in the Pantone Party featuring Illuminating and Ultimate Gray. This year, I was paired up with Goldie Olding Fabrics for my stop on the Very Peri Pantone Party Tour.

My kids reach for their soft knit wardrobe pieces 9 times out of 10, so that's where I focused my fabric and pattern search. After landing on the Violet Squiggle Bamboo French Terry, I knew it would be the perfect base for these pieces. The squiggles lean a little closer to the violet/red undertones, but it's close enough. As coordinates, I opted for Tangerine Bamboo French Terry and Black MicroModal and Supima Cotton Jersey. The tangerine comes across more coral in my opinion than what I would traditionally associate with tangerine. Once the fabrics arrived, I was a tad jealous that they wouldn't be for me.

Avery basically lives in sweatshirts and joggers or leggings these days. With track practice starting, she also needs them for layering to and from the track. Keeping that in mind, I created a set using the Jingle Joggers and the Chromium Cropped Hoodie.

Color blocking is my favorite way to customize any pattern, because it is simple to execute and makes a big impact. The Jingle Jogger pattern already includes the side stripe detail in the pattern, so I kept those as is. I love that the pattern includes a pocket option even when you make use of the stripe detail. Avery still fits in the size 12, but I needed to add 2 1/4" in length. As a result, I had to piece together a strip long enough to create the side stripe. Thankfully that squiggle fabric really disguises the seam!

The custom color blocking came into play with the Chromium Hoodie pattern. I split the front and back bodice into two pieces and the sleeves into three. a little contrast goes a long way, and I love the impact the tangerine has even though it's only a small section of the sleeve. I added 2 1/2" to the bodice for a slightly longer cropped length, then added cuffs to the sleeves that are not part of the original pattern.

While the color blocking for the Chromium Hoodie was simple with straight lines, I knew I wanted a little something extra when it came to this Story Dress. Adding a rainbow arc employs the same techniques as a straight color block, but it's important to keep those seams lined up to avoid any waviness.

Once again the contrast pieces are minimal but create a pop of color that adds a little extra to the overall look. Tandy is prone to eczema especially in the winter months, so she prefers nothing restrictive on her arms. The puffed lantern style sleeve meets her needs and provides an adorable silhouette.

Ghoul's Night In 10th Birthday

Tandy has hit the double digit milestone! For her 10th birthday, she wanted a small sleepover with two girls from her new school and to get her ears pierced with her neighborhood friend. Her wishes were granted!

As soon as we arrived at the idea of a Ghouls Night In theme for the sleepover, I started scheming. Even for a party of 3, I couldn't resist diving into details.

The cake was by far my favorite creation. It was loosely inspired by this ghost cake by @cakemecarrie. Tandy's cake was a 3 layer oval, orange flavored cake with vanilla frosting, orange creamsicle if you will. The ghosts are created using candy melts smeared on wax paper with the back of a spoon, similar to these. The Boo topper was a last minute addition created with my Silhouette machine and a kabob skewer.

Sugar cookies were another must have. The cutter came from Target, and I combined my own sprinkle mix. Again, I find inspiration elsewhere for just about everything.

Target also came through with Halloween themed circus cookies and ghost peeps (Tandy's favorite of all the treats).

For the non-sweet snacks, we provided string cheese, cheese puffs, and mandarin oranges.

The ceramic ghosts were such a fun find at Home Goods. The smaller one housed a kitchen sink sponge, but we had a better idea. The black/white and pink pumpkins came from Target. They were out of orange velvet pumpkins, but my mom found some at Hobby Lobby. We painted the stems gold to coordinate better with the pink variety from Target.

The fun bunting was cut from old book pages using my Silhouette machine. I created her shirt and dollar store pizza pan sign using a cut file from DetailsbyMe on Etsy.

I printed and cut using the Silhouette software for the first time with these party favor tags. How fun are the glow in the dark ghost pop it's?!? I'm not sure I get the craze for every variety of pop it, but I am a fan of a cute one that is theme appropriate.

Hey June Fairmount Shacket

It's been so long since I've posted on my personal blog that I almost forgot how. When the queen of button down patterns has a new release, it's a good excuse for a new blog post. The Fairmount Shacket by Hey June Handmade is part shirt and part jacket for the ideal layering piece. It features a dropped shoulder, front button placket, back pleat, and sleeve cuffs.

My favorite feature is the convertible collar. This is my first time sewing one, and prior to the pattern test, I didn't even know the name for it. "Convertible or Non-Convertible: refers to whether the collar changes shape when it is closed with the top buttons or the buttons are open; or non-convertible, which keeps the same shape regardless." I was second guessing how neat the result would be as I went through the sewing process, but Adrianna nailed it again with a good design.

I made a size 8 with no adjustments. Typically, I add 1/2" to Hey June patterns for my height, but was so eager to get cutting that I forgot this time. I'm pretty pleased with where this hits, but a longer style would be cute too. I'm 5'-9" for reference. As Adrianna notes, "Shackets are meant to be worn as outerwear or layering pieces, so they have more ease than a shirt and can also be slightly longer."

As with any button down shirt I've sewn, this is not a quick sew. Details like pocket flaps, cuffs, collars, plackets, and buttonholes slow down the process. There are 11 pattern pieces after all. I would not say that any step is particularly difficult however. Invest the time, and the result will be worth it.

The Fairmount Shacket is designed for lighter to midweight apparel wovens, such as flannel, double cloth, or corduroy. I've used a mid weight poly cotton shirting fabric from my great aunt's stash. Can you believe what she paid for this?!? This fabric has very little drape contributing to an exaggerated oversized look. The design is intended to be oversized, but more drape in the fabric would mean it sits closer to my body. I used my favorite trick of turning the pocket and flap on the bias to avoid pattern matching and add some variety in the print.

Pantone Party 2021

Project Run and Play is hosting a party with a theme this month, and you know how I love a good party theme! Welcome to my stop on the Project Run and Play Pantone Party 2021 tour featuring fabrics from Fabricworm. In exchange for Project Run and Play patterns and Fabricworm fabric, I had the opportunity to create a look my daughter would love. The only constraint was that the color scheme had to revolve around the Pantone colors of 2021, Ultimate Gray and Illuminating.

Illuminating is such a bright, sunny shade, so it easily set the tone of my look. First, I dusted off my dormant applique skills and had some fun with the FREE Book Bag pattern. The sunny arches are Squeeze Cones in yellow by Dana Willard appliqued on Essex Canvas in steel. I finished off the tote with a vinyl decal phrase that perfectly suits the sunny fabric as well as my daughter's disposition. The Book Bag Tote has so much scrap busting potential since it only require 1/2 yard of fabric. I can see making a bunch of these to use as gift bags with my neglected stash of quilting cottons.

Once we had the perfect beach/pool tote, I set out to make a swim cover up to complete the ensemble using the Ultramarine Coverup pattern. I love that this pattern works for woven as well as knit fabrics.

I opted for the hooded coverup version with an elastic casing to cinch at the middle creating a bit of shaping. For my daughter's chest size, I had to add 3" in length for the perfect mid thigh look of a cover up, but a bit short for a dress.

I love the Squeeze line by Dana Willard so much that I used another print here for the coverup. The Floral in Eggshell combined nicely with Birch Organic mod basic grey. I used the center panel of the hood, shoulder pieces, and elastic casing as contrast. By the way, I am dying to get my hands on some of the Squeeze lemon fabric!!

It's only the beginning of spring, and this daughter is ready for summer! Pool time here we come!

Blank Slate Sora Sweater

I have two short sleeve Blank Slate Sora Sweaters you can see here and here. This is my first long sleeve pullover Sora. If you've ever wondered what to sew with sweater knit, this is it!!

I actually found this sweater knit in the remnant section at Walmart. I've had great experience purchasing knits from Walmart. Don't knock it until you try it!

This sweater knit has maroon and white threads with a chunky soft texture. Perfect for a cozy sweater.

The side gussets on the Sora Sweater give nice shaping. The deep v-neck with the shawl collar keeps it from looking to grandpa, if you know what I mean.

I traditionally tend to pair every top I have with jeans. I was reading up the other day on contrasting colors, and the ideas made so much sense. By shifting slightly away from the traditional contrasting colors, you can get great outfit ideas. In this sense the contrasting colors would be red and green. By shifting the color theory to maroon and olive, I've created a look that works beyond Christmas holidays.

Hey June Brunswick Pullover

In true blogger style, I swore I would be making View A of the Brunswick Pullover shortly after testing View B. Two years later, I am finally following through. Insert palm to face here.

The speckled ponte from JoAnn Fabrics was the perfect weight to get a nice drape on that cowl neck.

I pulled out some vintage chambray shirting for the button plackets, and I love the contrast. Wood buttons are my absolute favorite!

I didn't add any length to the pattern even though I am taller than the designed height. I would definitely add length if I intended to wear this with leggings, but I like the length for jeans.

You can tell what a difference fabric types make for the Brunswick by comparing my original pullover in heavy sweatshirt fabric. I love them both!

Blank Slate Patterns Verbena Skirt

It has been said before and will be said again. One advantage to sewing is being able to fit someone that may be off the standard size chart. Such is the case for Avery. At 12 years old, she is 5'-3", which puts her outside of many girl's pattern, but she doesn't have the bust or hips for women's patterns. I am finding a few women's pattern I can adjust to work for her. The bonus is that I can justify a few pattern purchases as being for both of us!

This is the Verbena Dress by Blank Slate Patterns. One of the simplest sewing pattern hacks around is changing a dress into a skirt. By shortening the bottom ruffle tier and adding a waistband, you have an adorable skirt perfect for a tween. I love the Verbena method for attaching the bottom tier, because you end up with the cute ruffle edge without having to do a narrow hem or other finish.

I sewed up the skirt portion of the Verbena Dress and measured the waist opening. I cut two waistbands based on the measurement including seam allowances. One the waistband was sewn into a circle, I folded it wrong sides together and tucked the elastic band inside. Then, I attached the band to the skirt.

Since the Verbena skirt tier has a 3/4 circle skirt, the twirl and swish factor is high. In double brushed poly fabric, it's like wearing a cloud.

Cropped Wyler Hoodie Pattern Hack

Now that the Wyler Hoodie Sew Along has wrapped up, it's time to play with hacking the Wyler Hoodie sewing pattern. For my original Wyler Hoodie, I made the sleeveless vest style adding my typical 1/2" in length.

For a fun hack of the pattern, I created a cropped version with an elasticized waistband. Simple and sporty.

The photo above is the inspiration behind this style.

I wanted the look of the waistband with casings, and I have a tutorial for creating it below. For more gathers like the inspiration image, you would need to cut the waistband pieces wider than the pattern pieces.

To achieve the cropped look, I cut down the bodice pattern pieces by 3". I omitted the pockets since they would fall at an awkward height with the shortened bodice.

To create the elasticized waistband, sew the two waistband pieces right sides together at the short ends. Press the waistband in half wrong sides together. Divide the waistband in three sections, mine are about 1 1/4" apart, taking into account the 1/2" seam allowance to attach the waistband. Stitch two rows to create the casings with a stretch stitch. Leave a 2" gap in each row.

Insert elastic in the bottom two rows sewing the ends of the elastic together. Stitch the casings closed. I used 1" wide knit elastic. I judged the length of the elastic based on where the waistband would hit on my body. For ultimate customization, I even made the top elastic a bit shorter than the rest based again on where it hit on my body. A safe estimate is also to cut the elastic to match with width of the waistband.

For the top casing, sew the elastic into a circle and insert it between the two layers of fabric. Pin the elastic as close to the stitching line as possible.

Place the waistband right sides together with the bodice and stitch along the raw edges being careful not the catch the elastic in the seam.

Done!

As an added bonus, the extra elastic in the waistband gives a degree of tummy control, and who doesn't love that!

Horse Riding Birthday Party

Tandy has only been horseback riding for a couple of months now, so as soon as I mentioned the possibility of a horse riding birthday party, she was all in. I have a few mementos from my horse riding days, but my sister supplied most of the horse figures she has collected for her annual Derby party. My Silhouette Cameo came in handy for creating cupcake toppers, labels, number nine, and the paper backdrop ribbons.

Orchestrating a party during this COVID season provided some challenges, but we took precautions and forged ahead. The guest list was small, and the party room was not an option. We fought the flies outside, but the weather ended up perfect.

After 30 minutes of riding, the party goers thanked their horse with homemade horse treats.

The hungry riders had snack options of trail mix and "horse feed". We were sure to use packaged food to keep germs at bay. Snack size carrot stick packs and apples with caramel dip provided a little sustenance, although not a single kiddo opted for carrots with the other options.

Sweet treats included horseshoe sugar cookies complete with sparkling gold luster dust and chocolate/vanilla cupcakes. If you've been around our parties at all, you know this is serious restraint on the sweet stuff for my part.

The watering hole provided bottled water or Capri-suns for kids and hard apple cider for any adults who stuck around.

The center piece for the activity table brought together more of our favorite things. The stencil letters that spell Tandy have made an appearance at her parties for years. I simply switch out the cardstock backing to suit the party color scheme. Most of the horseshoes used throughout were picked up over the years at my family's ranch. As an added bonus, the horseshoes weighed down our colorful bandanas that wanted to blow in the breeze.

My aqua IKEA cart made another appearance at the party too. A sweet friend painted the horse color-by-number for me years ago.

The cart housed our horse party favors including personalized water bottles with a few caramel apple candies inside, pony hair ties, and a color changing crazy straw.

The bottom shelf held our party activates that included horse themed bingo and coloring bandanas.

The idea to use fabric markers to personalize bandanas was the birthday girl's idea. I see a future party planner in the making.

Of course the horse riding was the highlight of the party. Tandy has become quite attached to Maya who had helped train her from the very first day. Maya made sure to have Tandy's favorite horse, Lucy, available to ride.

The latest party almost always seams like the most fun, but this one will certainly remain toward the top of the list.

Blank Slate Esma Pattern Hack

Pattern hacks are fun to create and add variety to your favorite styles in your wardrobe. Melissa has been sharing a variety of hacks on the Blank Slate Patterns Esma Top lately, and I have already shared two styles of dress hacks with you before. Today, I have a fun contrast center stripe tutorial to add to the Esma Top.

I created the center stripe to wrap up and around the neckline. Using the facing as a guide to create the new pieces, results in a clean finish inside and out.

Describing the pattern pieces may be the most difficult part, but bear with me. First trace the front facing on the front bodice of the top. Next, extend a curve down to a straight line offset from the center front fold line. Mine is 1.75" from the fold line, but adjust as needed keeping in mind it will be cut on the fold. Trace the new facing seam line onto another piece of paper. Add a 1/2" seam allowance toward the facing side on the bodice front. Add a 1/2" seam allowance toward the bodice side on the new center facing. Cut out the pieces on the seam allowance line.

Repeat this process with the back facing pieces.

Cut two front bodices mirrored, two front facings on the fold, two back facings on the fold, and one back bodice on the fold, along with your sleeves.

Using the original facing pattern pieces, cut 1 front and 1 back of interfacing. Apply the interfacing to the one new front and back facing pieces.

Sew the shoulder seam of the front and back facing pieces right sides together and press open. Press the outer edge of the facing to the wrong side 3/8" and set aside. Do not press at the short bottom end.

Sew the shoulder seams right sides together for the contrast pieces and the front and back bodice pieces. Press the seams of the contrast piece open. Finish the seams of the bodice and press toward the front.

Pin the contrast piece right sides together with the bodice up the center and around the neckline. Be sure to align the shoulder seams. In the photo, the right side of the bodice is turned to face the right side of the contrast piece. Stitch from the bottom of the bodice, up around the neckline and back down the other side of the contrast.

Clip the seams and press seam allowance toward the contrast.

With the bodice right side up, lay the facing right sides together. Pin and stitch around the neckline.

Clip the curve and V at the neckline. Press the seam allowance toward the facing and understitch along the right side of the facing.

Press the facing to the wrong side of the bodice with the raw edge still pressed under. Pin along the seam line and stitch in the ditch catching the facing on the inside for a clean finish. Continue with the pattern instructions for side seams, sleeves, and hem. Done!

How to Sew a Fully Lined Tank

The Hathaway Woven Tank Sewing Pattern by Blank Slate Patterns is drafted with bias tape finishes at the neckline and armscye resulting in an easy, breezy tank. When is comes to sheer or eyelet fabrics, however, you may want to include a full lining. Let me walk you through the process of sewing a fully lined Hathaway Tank.

The lining fabric should be something lightweight. I choose a white cotton lawn. Cut the front and back pieces of both the main fabric and the lining. Trim 1/2" from the bottom of the front and back lining pieces to ensure the hem will not show in the finished garment.

Sew the front and back main pieces right sides together with a 1/2" seam allowance at the shoulder. Repeat for the lining pieces. Press all seams open.

With right sides together, pin the lining piece to the main piece. Sew around the neckline with 1/4" seam allowance. Clip the curves the press the seam allowance toward the lining.

From the right side of the lining. understitch the seam allowance to the lining around the neckline to prevent the lining from rolling to the outside of the garment.

Here is where we are going to employ the "burrito method" to finish the armscye. With the tank flat, roll the fabric from one side to the opposite strap like you are rolling up a burrito with the filling inside. With the bodice rolled inside, you can pin the armscye right sides together. Stitch with a 1/4" seam allowance all around the armscye. Repeat for the other armscye. Clip seams and turn right side out and press well.

The burrito method is a bit challenging to show in photo format. Melissa Mora of Melly Sews has a great video to demonstrate the process.

Open up the tank. Align the side raw edges right sides together. Make sure the front lining is right sides together with the back lining, and the main front is right sides together with the main back. Sew the side seams with 1/2" seam allowance from the hem of the lining to the hem of the main fabric.

The last step is to hem the lining and main pieces independently.

Vero Beach Set

Hey June just released a pattern set that screams casual wear, but packs plenty of details. The Vero Beach Set is two patterns in one featuring a slightly oversized hoodie designed for woven fabrics and elastic waist shorts.

The Vero Beach set hoodie is perfect for throwing on over a swimsuit or to ward off the air conditioner chills. The block print cotton fabric has been in my stash for a while from my great aunt. It washed up a bit crinkle-y like a seersucker fabric which is perfect for the casual vibes of the outfit.

In case the details are getting lost in the bold print, I wanted to highlight a few. Adrianna included several finish options for the hood seam. I selected the french seam finish. The placket provides a nice place to add a pop of contrast if you choose, and the bias neckline finishes things off nicely. The kangaroo pocket is a great place to play with extra topstitching or tuck in a tag.

For the Vero Top, I made a size 8. Adding 1/2" in bodice length was the only adjustment.

The Vero Shorts are both casual and comfortable. With pockets front and back, they are practical too! I had just enough tencel denim left over from my Greer Jumpsuit to make the shorts. I had even saved enough bias tape for the hem finish.

The waistband is designed for 2" elastic and includes an option for a drawstring. Two darts in the back reduce bunching keeping the fit smooth.

For the Vero Shorts, I shortened the rise in front 1" and 1/2" in the back. I used a size 10 at the waist slimmed to a size 8 at the hip.

The Vero Beach Set certainly isn't just for the beach! The fabric options are endless, so have fun making a few of each piece. I plan to!

Easy Bias Binding Tutorial with the Hathaway Tank

The Hathaway Tank by Blank Slate Patterns is a great basic tank sewing pattern for woven fabrics. The pattern includes a store bought bias tape binding finish for the neckline and armholes. When sewing with delicate fabrics, I like to use self fabric bias binding or facing. "Self fabric" just mean the same fabric as the garment.

What makes this an easy bias binding method is that you don't have to press that delicate fabric into multiple folds before you attach it. Any tip that speeds up a sewing project is a benefit in my book.

The fabric for this Hathaway Tank is Telio Verona Cotton Rayon Voile. The fabric is thin without being too sheer. For my size medium tank, the pattern only required one yard of fabric with enough scraps to cut bias strips for the binding. Let's get to the tutorial!

Easy Bias Binding Tutorial

The easy bias binding tutorial will focus on binding the neckline of the tank, but the same application works for the armholes. You will need to first cut 1.5" strips of fabric on the bias grainline. The total length of your bias tape should be at least as long as the distance around the neckline plus 1". For tips on cutting and connecting strips of bias tape, check out the tutorial from Made by Rae. Once you have your strip, press the bias tape in half wrong sides together. I told you this was easier than creating single fold bias binding!!

Make sure you have sewn in your stay stitching at the neckline before you proceed or you will risk a wavy, stretched out neckline. Pin your folded bias strip right sides together along the neckline aligning the raw edges. It may help to press the bias into the curved shape of the neckline as you go.

Stitch the bias strip to the neckline with a 1/4" seam allowance starting and stopping 1-2" before the ends. Trim the ends as needed so you can create a 1/2" seam allowance along the short ends.

Open up the bias tape and stitch the short ends right sides together making sure you move the bodice pieces out of the way. Re-fold the bias tape and press. Join the previous stitching line around the neckline at 1/4" seam allowance.

Trim the seam allowance to 1/8" and press the seam allowance toward the bias. Understitch the bias tape by stitching close to the seam on the right side of the fabric catching the seam allowance underneath. Understitching helps the fabric to role to the inside of the garment making the bias invisible from the outside.

Press the bias to the wrong side of the neckline and stitch in place next to the inner fold.

Now your inside looks as pretty as the outside!! Bias facings in self fabric or even a fun contrast fabric are a great way to get a professional and personalized finish.

Seaforth Pants by Hey June Handmade

Timing was everything for this pattern test with Hey June Handmade. I couldn't help but speed through my Seaforth Pants tester version, so I could photograph them by the sea.

This is the wide leg elastic pants pattern I've always hoped for without fully realizing it. There are just enough details to take the style from pajama pants to daytime or even evening pants. All without loosing any of the comfort.

There is another view for the Seaforth Pattern two! View B includes the same front and back pockets, but features a slimmer leg with elastic at the ankle. It makes the perfect woven jogger look.

The zipper welt pockets steal the show. Using a metal zipper gives the perfect finish. I found matching brass eyelets for the drawstring in my stash too. The brass zippers come in a huge variety of colors from Wawak. I used the triple stitch on my machine to make the topstitching a bit more dramatic, a little trick I learned from Melissa.

Linen blends were highly recommended for the Seaforth Pattern, so I used Robert Kaufman Essex Yarn Dyed Linen in black. The peach Biscayne Blouse I made last year completed the vacation look, relaxed yet put together.

I made a size 10 in the waist slimmed down to a 6 just below the hip. Other adjustments include reducing the rise 1/2", plus an additional 1/2" in the front only, and lengthening the leg by 1 1/4".

Hathaway Tank and Tillery Skirt

There's a new woven tank pattern in town! Take a look at the Hathaway Tank by Blank Slate Patterns. This easy to sew pattern will be a staple in summer, but works equally well for layering in the cooler months.

The Hathaway Tank pattern features a scoop or V neckline with bias bound neck and armholes. My favorite part is that it only takes 1 yard of 60" wide fabric for sizes up to a large. I've used a mystery poly rayon blend that my great aunt must have saved from an old skirt.

The scoop neck tank pattern required only two pattern pieces with an optional pocket. The v-neck tank version has an additional pattern piece for cutting the bias at the V. The only adjustments I made to the Hathaway Tank pattern were for adding length, 1/4" at the shoulder and 1/2" at the lengthen/shorten line. This tank is so fast to sew that I've already made 3. I've paired my Hathaway with the Tillery Skirt by Blank Slate Patterns. This is my second Tillery, and you can find the first Tillery Skirt here. This time I added the front pockets. Esma Top Hacked to Dress

Most days during this shelter in place situation, I am dressed in my workout gear which is great for ensuring I get my workouts in. Some days it does seem to improve my mood when I put on makeup and fix my hair though. Finishing this Esma Top to dress hack was a great excuse to dress up even for a couple hours. The Esma Top by Blank Slate Patterns is great basic, easy fit pattern to have in your stash.

Check out the original Esma top makes here. I hacked the Esma top into a dress once already simply by adding length. This time I opted for more of a babydoll dress look with a gathered skirt.

I wanted this dress to be a bit higher waisted, so I determined the bodice length from top of shoulder to 1" above my natural waist would be 17" including seam allowances (1/2" at shoulder and 1/2" at waist). I simply cut the top front and back pattern piece off with a straight line to create the new bodice pattern piece.

Next, I determined the length and width of the skirt rectangles. I wanted the finished dress to be 36" long, so I started with 36" + 1" shoulder seam allowance + 1/2" hem allowance = 37.5". From there 37.5" - 17" bodice length = 20.5". Add in the seam allowance at the waist for 20.5" + 1" = 21.5". My skirt height needed to be 21.5". For the skirt width, I measured the flat width of the bodice. For a flat width of 19", use 19" + 1" seam allowance = 20". To allow for gathers I used 1.5 times this width, so 20" x 1.5 = 30". To complete the dress, I cut two rectangles 21.5"h x 30"w, stitched the side seams RST to create a tube, gathered the top of the tube, and attached it to the bodice. The final step was creating a 1/4" hem.

This is such a simple way to create a v-neck babydoll dress, since the most difficult part, the bodice fitting, is already done for you. When you have a great base like the Esma Top, the pattern hacks are endless. I used a linen from Joann's that I purchased last summer. I'd love to see this dress style in rayon challis too.

Verbena Dress by Blank Slate Patterns

The Verbena sewing pattern comes with a dress and peplum top view.

The most unique aspect of the Verbena pattern is the tiered style. While there are plenty of tiered dresses on the market, Verbena starts with a 3/4 circle skirt upper tier that minimizes bulk at the waistline. The lower tier connects with a ruffle that adds to the interest of the dress.

I sewed the Verbena Dress with a scoop neck and elbow length sleeves using a rayon spandex knit from Joann. This fabric grew on me a bit, so I would suggest hanging the dress overnight and checking the hemline before actually sewing the hem if you use this type of fabric.

As far as personal adjustments go, I added 1 1/4" to the bodice for my height. The waist seam is designed to hit 1" above the natural waist. The pattern includes detailed instructions for taking your measurements and adjusting the bodice to get the placement just right. I ended up cutting off some inches off the bottom tier to even out my hem as I indicated above and have the length at just above my knee.

The pattern includes 5 main pattern pieces depending on your neckline style, and you can opt to cut the bottom tier rectangles using an additional pattern piece or a cutting chart. The peplum portion comes together very quickly. The bottom tier to create the dress requires a bit more time as you are gathering and attaching a very long section of fabric.

Zipper Heart Pocket Monroe Turtleneck

Two days before Valentine's Day, I saw someone at my bible study wearing this sweater. I determined to make one for Valentine's Day, as one does. Am I right?!? Nothing like a last minute sewing project.

My friend had said she received the heart sweater as a gift last year, so I didn't think I would actually be able to find the inspiration image, but my google search was successful. It is currently on sale at Neiman Marcus for $180 down from $245. Yikes!

I wanted to mimic the slightly boxy, dropped shoulder style. I knew the Monroe Turtlneck pattern I had just made would be the perfect starting point. With only 4 pattern pieces, it is a breeze to sew.

Of course the hack took a bit more effort. First, I color blocked the sleeves. Next, I scooped out the neckline and swapped the turtleneck for a neck band. Finally, I reduced the style ease in the body of the Monroe Turtleneck pattern from the size 2 to a size 1. Sizing down would have made the sleeves too short and tight. Reducing the style ease made for a loose, not too boxy fit. Adriana wrote a great article differentiating the types of ease. Be sure to check it out!

The olive sweater knit fabric came from a warehouse in Dallas. I followed Melissa's helpful tips for sewing with sweater knits with great results.

The star of the show is of course the heart zipper pocket. While it is fully functional, I'm not sure I would really use it for storage. The pocket might come in handy for a lone key or stick of gum. Let me know if you would like to see a full tutorial on this zipper heart pocket. Basically, I used two heart shaped pieces of woven fabric. After attaching the exposed zipper to one, I sewed the hearts right sides together and turned it right side out through the zipper opening. I reinforced the wrong side of the sweater knit where I would attach the heart, and topstitched around the edge to secure the pocket to the sweater. Even with the hacks, the heart sweater came together in just enough time for me to wear it to classroom parties on Valentine's Day. I call that a success!

Tillery Skirt and Monroe Turtleneck

I've been on a mission this winter to sew a few basic turtlenecks. You've seen my Paola Turtleneck Tees, and now I bring you the FREE Monroe Turtleneck pattern paired with a Tillery Skirt by Blank Slate patterns. The combination makes for a great handmade winter style, especially in Texas where I can still keep my knees bare.

I purchased the gray and black sweater knit from Fabscrap in NYC during my visit in December. Fabscrap is a unique fabric shop whose aim is to reduce and reuse fabric waste from the fashion industry. I sewed up a straight size 2 in the Monroe Turtleneck which gives a boxy shape with fitted neck and sleeves. This is a must sew FREE pattern! I love how easy it is to wear with jeans and a half tuck. Just search the hashtag to see what I mean.

I confess that I continue to make skirts that look better on people with more of a defined waist, but I still like the result of this Tillery Skirt. I didn't add any length, but I did have to grade out the waist a bit for my rectangular shape. The bias finished waistband and flat felled seams result in the prettiest finishes on the inside. Be sure to check out the fun gingham detail on the inside.

I had just enough corduroy left over from this Modkid Sierra Jumper for my tween. The Dritz Heavy Duty Snaps in Antique Brass were easy to install. I opted to skip the front pockets and belt loops, but I love the look both ways. I'd love to know if you have a favorite winter skirt pattern!

Pop Tart Valentines

Just in time for your last minute class valentines, I have a free printable valentine for your use! This is one valentine idea your kids will love! Homemade Pop Tarts would sent these treats over the top, but for a speedy valentine, store bought works just great.

Here’s what you need to do:

Click below to download your Valentines.
Purchase Pop Tarts from you local grocery store. We used strawberry, but cherry would also be a great choice.
Print Valentines on heavy cardstock.
Cut out your Valentine cards using scissors or a paper cutter.
Adhere your Valentine to the Pop Tart package with glue dots or other adhesive.

There you have it! Super fun, super cute and super easy.

For handmade Pop Tarts, wrap each Pop Tart individually and adhere the card to the outside of the packaging. You could also use the option for giving individual store bought Pop Tarts instead of the double package.

Paola Turtleneck and Arielle Skirt

As soon as I made my first Paola Turtleneck, I knew this would be one of those TNT patterns that I would return to over and over. I guess one more can't be considered over and over yet, but I'm still convinced there will be more. You can't go wrong with a classic turtleneck in black.

I've paired the Paola Turtleneck Tee by Named Clothing with the Arielle Skirt by Tilly and the Buttons. We've had quite the debate over on Instagram about the best look for me, tucked or untucked.

Come join in the conversation! Fit adjustments I made for the Paola include adding 1.5" in length to the bodice and 1" in length to the sleeves. Plus a shoulder adjustment I will mention below.

It’s funny how seemingly simple projects can take longer than you think. The Arielle skirt is a simple project, but including the full lining (this is wool after all) and hand stitching the hem added a little extra. I'm so pleased with the finishes though. Other than thread, this skirt is made from entirely vintage materials from my great aunt, including the lining, wool, and buttons. This is the size 4 (Euro sizing I guess) skirt with the shorter length graded out a bit at the waist for my more rectangle shape. I didn't add any length to the skirt for my 5'-9" height, because I like the shorter look and knew I would primarily wear this with tights.

A narrow shoulder adjustment is not something I typically need with patterns, but I noticed the shoulder seam sitting wide on my first grey Paola Turtleneck. As you can see, I acheived a much better fit after a 1/2" narrow shoulder adjustment following the tutorial at Melly Sews. It is a slow process, but I am gradually learning a few things to look for to access the fit of garments I make.

Crushed Velvet for the Holidays

Velvet was the fabric of choice for holiday looks again this year. After last year's velvet dresses, I mixed things up with this pretty teal blue crushed velvet from Joann Fabrics.

I really couldn't get another Chalk and Notch Waterfall Raglan dress in velvet out of my mind. Don't mess with perfection!

Sewing for my tween is getting increasingly more difficult as you can imagine. One minute she loves something and the next it's horrible. And, if she gets too many compliments she starts feeling like she is standing out which is worse! Finding modeled inspiration on Pinterest usually helps to get her on board with some looks.

It is getting harder to find ready to wear pants to fit her long slender size. When the Made It Slow Pants came out for teens, I knew this pattern would be a style we would both agree on.

I blended between the smallest size in width and a couple sizes up in length to arrive at a just right fit for Avery. The ability to sew completely different looks that resemble each of my daughter's individual style will keep me sewing for them as long as they let me!

Bexley Dress for Winter

Do you wear many dresses in winter? When it gets really chilly I tend to avoid them, but I figured the right fabric would help insulate me from the cold. Since french terry is perfect for cozy sweatshirts, I wanted to give it a try for a dress. I love my summer Bexley dresses, so I also wanted a winter version.

French terry is definitely not on the list of suggested fabrics for the Bexley Dress. The pattern is designed for knit fabrics with a lot more drape. While I knew this particular french terry met the pattern stretch requirements, I also knew it wouldn't lay the same way on my body. The great news is that the alteration to make it work is super simple!!

All it took was lowering the front and back darts, so they wouldn't sit too high. The pattern even includes instructions on raising and lowering darts! Keep in mind this is a thin to medium weight french terry. Anything too thick would make the darts too bulky.

Another option would be to omit the darts all together for a more swing-y shape.

I'm super thankful for the more mild winters we have in Texas, but I still want to stay cozy as those temperatures dip!
