The Filipinos won the initial heat beating back the challenge of powerhouse paddlers from Australia and Italy among others and then paddled their way to gold in the next round of competition beating Hungary who had earlier won the 2000M gold medal..

International Dragon Boat Federation officials who paid f or the Filipino paddlers housing while Philippine Airlines and Cobra met all the other expenses told Castillejo that they couldn’t afford not to have the Philippines in the competition because it would be like not having Brazil in the World Cup of football.

Dyan said Filipinos and Fil-Americans came out to cheer our team and brought a variety of Filipino food for our athletes in another wonderful display of togetherness.

Cobra Energy Drink agency representatives informed us that the event was a last minute addition to the race program but the Cobra-PDBF team was ready to join and won the gold even if this is not really one of their stronger events.

Our 2007 and 2009 world championship titles are in the sprints, 200 m events for men's and mixed but they are really going all out for the Gold!

The private sector as well as the television and print media rallied around the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation Team after they were abandoned by both the Philippine Olympic Committee headed by Jose "Peping" Cojuangco and the Philippine Sports Commission led by chairman Richie Garcia.

Dragon Boat Team needs help

ANILA, Philippines – Despite being one of the top dragon boat teams in the world, the Philippine Dragon Boat Team has not received recognition nor assistance from the government or Filipino fans.

The Philippine Dragon Boat Team won the 200-m event in the 2007 World Championships in Sydney, Australia. They defended their championship in the 2009 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.

They are set to once again defend their title in the 2011 World Championships in Tampa Bay, Florida on August.

But the team lacks the funds to make the trip. They cannot pay for the air fare and have no allowance.

“Nalulungkot kami dahil... hindi po nakikilala ang sport namin,” says team captain Usman Anterola. “Kami po ang may hawak ng world record.

“Suportahan po sana kami ng mga agency sa finance at sa uniforms.”

Anterola said that all members of the team were from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and that they received support from the AFP.

The Philippine Dragon Boat Team needs 20 members in order to compete in the world championship – 14 men and 6 women. They are hoping that sports agencies will be able to help them in their mission to defend their title.

The team said that they are willing to make sacrifices so that they can compete in the World Championships again.

“Ang pinaka-importante po ay... ‘yung pamasahe. Walang problema sa amin, kahit sardinas lang ang kainin. Sanay naman kami sa ganyan,” said steersman Ruperto Sabijon.

“Ang training po namin ay continuous, at kami po ay handang mag-laro at mag-sacrifice ng time para manalo,” Anterola added.

But the team is clearly in need of financial support from other sports organizations.

Sabijon said that the team has been using the same wooden paddles since 2007.

Ramie Llano, another member of the dragon boat team, recounts how they had to scrimp on expenses while participating in the Sydney World Championships.

“Doon kami nakatira sa may sementeryo, naglalakad na lang kami... Walang budget eh,” said Llano.

But despite the lack of support and funding from the government and sports organizations, the Philippine Dragon Boat Team is admired in other countries.

“Kaya nating pangahain ‘yung ibang bansa. Naipapakita natin na kahit ganito tayong mga Pinoy, kaya nating mangibabaw sa sport ng Dragon Boat,” Llano said.

Llano revealed that the team’s uniforms became a hot item when they competed overseas.

“Gusto nilang makipagpalit ng uniform sa amin,” he said. He added that it was because of the team’s good performance that members of other teams wanted to exchange uniforms with them.

“Pag suot nila, para na rin silang isa sa mga nanalo.”

Sabijon is now asking President Benigno Aquino III to support the Dragon Boat Team.

“Sana suportahan natin, hindi lang sa isang sport. Itong dragon boat, nakilala na ito sa buong mundo. Sana suportahan na maganda. Ipapakita namin, kung ano ang ibibigay na suporta, bibigyan namin ng kapalit.” -

LAS VEGAS – The Pacquiao vs Sugar Share Mosley fight this Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena is not only the biggest fight of the year so far but is also Pacquiao's biggest fight in terms of ticket sales and media coverage, this according to Top Rank publicist Lee Samuels.

“They're all cleaned up,” Samuels, resting at the MGM media center after the jampacked Pacquiao and Mosley grand entrance, told PhilBoxing referring to the tickets for the fight which was already almost sold out during the first three hours when the ticket sales opened last February. “All the seats of the arena are taken,” Samuels said. Aside from the the arena tickets, close circuit tickets are also on sale in hotels around Las Vegas and are selling like hot cakes.

Over at Team Pacquiao, they're in a quandary on how to accommodate all the ticket requests from Pacquiao's ever growing circle of friends and supporters. Many of Pacquiao's loyal Los Angeles-based well-wishers who never missed a Pacquiao fight were deprived of tickets for the fight this time around. Politicians and celebrities who had calendared a May 7 Las Vegas holiday to see the fight and who depended on Pacquiao for tickets may end up canceling their trips or viewing the fight on close circuit while in Las Vegas.

“There are 1,600 people on the list who will be given tickets [for free or otherwise] but we have only 1,000 tickets on hand,” a Pacquiao insider revealed. Normally, Top Rank, the promoter of this fight, will have plenty to spare at crunch time. But this time around even Top Rank has nothing left. I asked Top Rank's Ricardo Jimenez if he has one ticket to spare because a friend of mine had asked to buy one. “Oh, forget it,” was Jimenez quick response who in the past was able to accommodate our requests.

“This is also the biggest media coverage ever for a Pacquiao fight,” Samuels continued. “All the big media guys are here, even those those who don't usually cover boxing are here. We're having a hard time accommodating everyone. We have to reject more than 200 credential applications because there is no more space to accommodate them in the arena. This is even bigger than Pacquiao-De la Hoya fight.”

The promotional success of the Pacquiao-Mosley fight, who had been criticized by many boxing writers from its inception, could be attributed to several factors including introducing Pacquiao's success story into a new audience via CBS TV network, Paquiao's return to Las Vegas after a one and a half year absence where a weekend holiday to the sin city was a sought after affair during a Pacquiao event and Pacquiao's growing number of Mexican fans who want to spend their Cinco de Mayo holidays in Las Vegas. The Vazquez-Arce tussle and a Kelly Pavlik return on the undercard also helped.

The effect of all these factors to the success of the pay-per-view numbers to this event remains to be seen however and is the only the unknown variable in the equation coming to this Saturday's fight. Bob Arum is aiming for a record pay-per-view numbers for Pacquiao this time courtesy of CBS's over a hundred million subscribers. Pacquiao had logged more than a million PPV buys in three of his last four fights. The highest pay-per-view on record was the De La Hoya-Mayweather fight in 2007 at 2.4 million buys.

Asked if the Pacquiao-Mosley pay-per-view will also be successful, Samuels simply said: “I don't know.”

Mt. Apo Boulder Face Challenge is one of the toughest adventure races in the Philippines. It is a 24-hour extreme challenge starting from Sta. Cruz beach lines to the skyline of Mt. La Routa 2010

The LA ROUTA Adventure Race is a mix of several passions. Beyond being just another adventure race, the La Routa is a unique human experience. The race is more than just a test of skill and human endurance, it is above all else a test of character.

A HUMAN EXPERIENCE
Joining the La Routa is in some ways conquering one’s self. Self-doubt borne of fatigue and temptations borne from the desire to dominate other teams are a constant presence through out the race. Only by accepting one’s capabilities and playing by the rules can one truly comprehend the essence of the competition.

A REGIONAL EVENT
The La Routa Adventure Race is the most awaited adventure sporting event in the region. On its 10th year this year, it is currently the longest running adventure race in the country. It is participated by teams not just throughout region 8, but teams from other Visayas and nearby Mindanao provinces as well. The 2009 race had 42 participating teams.

The La Routa Adventure Race Circuit will also feature the outdoor destinations of eastern Visayas idyllic for hosting such events. The different legs of the circuit will be held in four key areas throughout region 8 namely; Maasin City, Southern Leyte close to the renowned dive sites of Pabre Burgos, Tanauan, Leyte considered the birth place of skim boarding in the Philippines, Catarman, Northern Samar facing the pacific ocean and close to the Biri Island rock formations and Tacloban City gate way to eastern Visayas.

A NATIONAL LEVEL COMPETITION
More than just a simple adventure race. Owing to the short amount of time in which the race is run, the La Routa is more of a sprint than a marathon. Teams of three persons each without support crews are expected to carry all their equipment with them. They are subjected to extreme physical and mental conditions. Teams are required to navigate through a series of sequential control points using a combination of compass bearing and distance, triangulations, coordinates, riddles and puzzle using a map with a very different set of scale; 1:37,327 which changes every year. This has never been done in any other races.

In the La Routa, endurance is essential and rock-solid navigational capability is fundamental. This mix of physical rigor and technical performance draws teams from diverse backgrounds to compete in the race.

For this year, the Final leg of the La Routa adventure race circuit will feature two (2) levels; National and Local, with two categories for the national level; Masters and Veterans and three (3) categories for the local level; Elite, Candidates and Aspirants. All the teams will start in mass and will be divided to the different categories once they are cut off in pre-determined cut off points. The La Routa is designed by Mr. Jason Garrido, race director of Carrera Habagat, the only four day non-stop race in Asia and considered the longest and toughest adventure race in the Philippines.

Everyone knows that running is already a challenge on its own, but the Men’s Health Urbanathlon will require more than just a perfect running form and endurance. Participants’ strength, balance and agility will also be tested because of the obstacles along the race course.

For months of December-February, jackets or long-sleeved shirts have a dual purpose in Batulao: they protect you from the chilly morning temperature, and shield you from the sun’s UV rays. Avoid garments that easily stain with dust, for Batulao is arid. During the rainy season, however, Batulao also gets humid, so wear clothes according to your comfort. Also, during rainy days, the portions of the trails could be severely muddy -- preparing accordingly. In all seasons, however, long-sleeved clothing is still advised.

For the old trail, some would advice wearing gloves during the final ascent to Batulao’s peak, but it would depend on the hiker’s grip and convenience. For the new trail, gloves are not needed nor recommended.

Boy guides, aged 8-17, wait for mountaineers by the highway; you can secure their services for a range of prices but PinoyMountaineer.com recommends P300/day. Don't worry much about the 'child labor' aspect as these kids are able to go to school on weekdays; they do the guiding on weekends as their part-time job.

You can save time by taking a tricycle from the highway to the end of the road - about a 20-minute trip that costs P100/tricycle ride. You can also get their cellphone number to fetch you on your way back. At the small village that you will pass by foot or trike, you can buy food and water. A local ice cream is also sold.

At Camp 1, P20 fee is collected; a similar fee is collected at the New Trail campsite. Take note: If you want to two different trails up and down, you must pay P20 on both sides.

There are no immediately accessible water sources throughout the Batulao trail but guides can access further sources, 30 minutes away for you on either trails. For dayhikes, 1.5-2 L water is advised. Cellphone signal is present throughout the climb.

The LA ROUTA Adventure Race is a mix of several passions. Beyond being just another adventure race, the La Routa is a unique human experience. The race is more than just a test of skill and human endurance, it is above all else a test of character.

A HUMAN EXPERIENCE
...Joining the La Routa is in some ways conquering ones self. Self-doubt borne of fatigue and temptations borne from the desire to dominate other teams are a constant presence through out the race. Only by accepting oneâ€™s capabilities and playing by the rules can one truly comprehend the essence of the competition.

A REGIONAL EVENT
The La Routa Adventure Race is the most awaited adventure sporting event in the region. On its 10th year this year, it is currently the longest running adventure race in the country. It is participated by teams not just throughout region 8, but teams from other Visayas and nearby Mindanao provinces as well. The 2009 race had 42 participating teams.

The La Routa Adventure Race Circuit will also feature the outdoor destinations of eastern Visayas idyllic for hosting such events. The different legs of the circuit will be held in four key areas throughout region 8 namely; Maasin City, Southern Leyte close to the renowned dive sites of Pabre Burgos, Tanauan, Leyte considered the birth place of skim boarding in the Philippines, Catarman, Northern Samar facing the pacific ocean and close to the Biri Island rock formations and Tacloban City gate way to eastern Visayas.

A NATIONAL LEVEL COMPETITION
More than just a simple adventure race. Owing to the short amount of time in which the race is run, the La Routa is more of a sprint than a marathon. Teams of three persons each without support crews are expected to carry all their equipment with them. They are subjected to extreme physical and mental conditions. Teams are required to navigate through a series of sequential control points using a combination of compass bearing and distance, triangulations, coordinates, riddles and puzzle using a map with a very different set of scale; 1:37,327 which changes every year. This has never been done in any other races.

In the La Routa, endurance is essential and rock-solid navigational capability is fundamental. This mix of physical rigor and technical performance draws teams from diverse backgrounds to compete in the race.

For this year, the Final leg of the La Routa adventure race circuit will feature two (2) levels; National and Local, with two categories for the national level; Masters and Veterans and three (3) categories for the local level; Elite, Candidates and Aspirants. All the teams will start in mass and will be divided to the different categories once they are cut off in pre-determined cut off points. The La Routa is designed by Mr. Jason Garrido, race director of Carrera Habagat, the only four day non-stop race in Asia and considered the longest and toughest adventure race in the Philippines.

Lori Hyde was hunting for a unique vacation experience when her curiosity was piqued by Pretty Joe Rock, a tiny speck of land in the waters off Marathon in the Florida Keys with just enough room for a two-bedroom home and a few clusters of mangroves.

She and her husband spent a week on the petite island in February, relaxing and enjoying each other's company, with no one else around but the resident birds.

"I was looking for a rental that would be private so that came up as I was searching around and we were like, well it can't get much more private than that," said Hyde, 43, a stay-at-home mom who lives in Woodbridge, Virginia.

"It's not an exclusive sort of thing. We're just ordinary people who just did something cool."

Indeed, the idea of renting a private island usually conjures up images of multimillionaires spending a fortune to jet off to a tropical paradise in the Caribbean or the South Pacific. If you have a lot of money to shell out, the possibilities are endless.

But while a big budget will give you more options and luxurious accommodations, you don't have to be rich to rent your own island for a vacation. It can sometimes take as little as a few hundred dollars a week, a sense of adventure and the willingness to look at locations closer to home.

Pretty Joe Rock, for example, can be yours for under $3,000 a week, which includes the use of a boat to get you to and from the island. Owner Bob Rainek said he gets a broad spectrum of renters, from blue collar to white collar; from families with kids to couples.

"It's almost a universal thing that people have this romantic kind of feeling for islands," Rainek said. "It's a mystique to be on your own private island, to have water 360 degrees [around you.] It's a primal type emotion, as I look at it."

Business has been brisk despite the economy, partly because people who might otherwise go to Mexico for a vacation have been scared off by that country's drug-related violence and are looking for something exotic closer to home, Rainek said. He was proud to tout the Florida Keys, which he called "America's Caribbean," as an alternative.

Some of the most popular places to rent islands may surprise you. They include the northern United States and Canada, said Chris Krolow, the CEO of Private Islands Inc., a company based in Toronto, Ontario, that has about 200 islands for rent all over the world in its database.

Clients come from all walks of life, spending as little as $550 for a week on Republic Island in Michigan (which comes with a log cabin) or more than $66,000 for a week on The Rania Experience in the Maldives (which comes with three villas, a private chef, a yacht and other ultra-luxurious touches.)

'Robinson Crusoe' experience

For something in between, a budget of several thousand dollars a week is usually a good start.

"We're even finding more and more people who are saving and planning a honeymoon on an island. It's a little bit more expensive than what they had originally planned but it seems to be a growing trend," Krolow said.

"It's probably the most romantic experience that you could ever imagine just being on this tiny island with the person that you just married."

You can choose a self-catering island, which gives you the use of a home but requires you to bring your own food and make your own meals (the less expensive option), or a full-service island that comes with a staff, according to Vladi Private Islands, a company based in Hamburg, Germany. Its database of about 150 islands for rent includes everything from Île de Chantemesle near Paris, France, to Forsyth Island, New Zealand.

Some people seek the thrill of being dropped off in a remote place that's completely undeveloped. On "Robinson Crusoe" islands, you are left to your own devices, make your own meals, bring a tent or hammock and anything else you may need, the company said. Nova Scotia, Canada, is one part of the world that offers such opportunities, added Sabine Rollinger, a Vladi spokeswoman.

Krolow recalled a CEO who last year spent 10 days on a deserted spot in the Marshall Islands bonding with his 13-year-old son.

"It's pretty much the closest you'll get to being stranded on your own private island," Krolow said.

Spending a lot or a little

On the other end of the spectrum, there's Necker Island, Sir Richard Branson's 74-acre paradise in the British Virgin Islands complete with luxurious accommodations and a large staff.

It's all yours for at least $53,000 a night for up to 28 guests, though you can rent individual rooms for a fraction of that price during a select few "Celebration Weeks."

It may sound like the ultimate getaway, but people who are looking for that private island feel might be a little disappointed by such a huge resort, Krolow said.

And if the idea of having an island all too yourself is too expensive or intimidating, you can try one with a single lodge or hotel perched on top, like the quaint five-room bed-and-breakfast on East Brother Light Station near San Francisco, California. Starting at about $300 a night, it's an island stay that's both private and not too hard on the wallet.

Whatever your budget, an island may be waiting.
