Tianjin Binhai Library, located just outside Beijing, features a luminous spherical atrium with bookshelves lining the walls, from floor to ceiling. What looks to be a book lover's ultimate fantasy could ultimately house 1.2 millions tomes.

Text description provided by the architects. MVRDV in collaboration with local architects TUPDI has completed the library, a 33,700m2 cultural centre featuring a luminous spherical auditorium around which floor-to-ceiling bookcases cascade. The undulating bookshelf is the building’s main spatial device, and is used both to frame the space and to create stairs, seating, the layered ceiling and even louvres on the façade. Tianjin Binhai Library was designed and built in a record-breaking time of only three years due to a tight schedule imposed by the local municipality. Next to many media rooms it offers space for 1,2 million books.

The building’s mass extrudes upwards from the site and is ‘punctured’ by a spherical auditorium in the centre. Bookshelves are arrayed on either side of the sphere and act as everything from stairs to seating, even continuing along the ceiling to create an illuminated topography. These contours also continue along the two full glass facades that connect the library to the park outside and the public corridor inside, serving as louvres to protect the interior against excessive sunlight whilst also creating a bright and evenly lit interior.

“The Tianjin Binhai Library interior is almost cave-like, a continuous bookshelf. Not being able to touch the building’s volume we ‘rolled’ the ball shaped auditorium demanded by the brief into the building and the building simply made space for it, as a ‘hug’ between media and knowledge” says Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV. “We opened the building by creating a beautiful public space inside; a new urban living room is its centre. The bookshelves are great spaces to sit and at the same time allow for access to the upper floors. The angles and curves are meant to stimulate different uses of the space, such as reading, walking, meeting and discussing. Together they form the ‘eye’ of the building: to see and be seen.”

"Salvator Mundi". Leonardo da Vinci Painting Sells for $450.3 Million

Leonardo da Vinci‘s Salvator Mundi (circa 1500), billed as the last known painting by the Renaissance master in private hands, sold at Christie’s for $450.3 million. It is, by far, the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction. In fact, the price is more than double the next most expensive work ever sold, Picasso’s Les femmes d’Alger (Version ‘O’), which fetched $179.4 million in 2015.

The work went to an anonymous client of Alex Rotter, Christie’s global co-head of contemporary art. Before a packed salesroom and scores of camera phones held aloft, bidding opened at $70 million. At $190 million, five bidders—four on the phones and one in the room—were still chasing the painting.

The 19-minute contest eventually came down to Rotter and Francois De Poortere, the head of Christie’s Old Master painting department in New York.

At $352 million, auctioneer Jussi Pylkkanen produced a glass of ice water from behind the rostrum and took a sip.

After a protracted bidding war in which Rotter’s client continued to bid in increments as large as $30 million—and De Poortere’s client bid in smaller steps of around $2–5 million—the work hammered down for $400 million to a flurry of applause (and a few gasps). With the auction house’s fees, the final price was $450.3 million.

The painting was one of 58 works included in Christie’s evening sale of postwar and contemporary art on Wednesday at Rockefeller Center in New York.

The Leonardo painting has a dramatic backstory that involves a royal family, an estate sale, and a contentious lawsuit. Originally commissioned for the French Royal collection, it went missing for decades. In 2005, a consortium of dealers spotted the painting at an estate sale and had it authenticated as a bona fide Leonardo. In 2013, they sold the work to Swiss dealer and so-called “freeport king” Yves Bouvier for a price reportedly between $75 million and $80 million.

Bouvier then flipped the work to Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev for a reported $127.5 million.

Cancer isn’t something anyone wants to spend a lot of time thinking about, yet knowledge is power. When it comes to testicular cancer, acting early has huge implications.

Here are five things every man needs to know:

Testicular cancer is very curable. While a cancer diagnosis is always serious, the good news about testicular cancer is that it is treated successfully in 95 percent of cases. If treated early, that number rises to 98 percent. Although a man’s risk of getting it is 1 in 263, his chance of dying from the disease is only about 1 in 5,000.

Early detection is especially important. Say you have a stage 1 seminoma — a tumor that grows slowly and stays within the testicle — our standard management is observing it with serial exams, blood work, chest X-rays and CT scans. The likelihood of a cure in this circumstance? Virtually 100 percent. Even metastatic testicular cancer is highly curable, typically with a combination of chemotherapy and surgery.

Men between ages 15-35 should do self-exams every month. The best place to do a monthly self-exam? In the shower. It’s easier to notice any potential problems in the shower, the scrotal skin is loose and thin. If you find a swelling or lump in either testicle or in your scrotum — or have pain, discomfort or a feeling of heaviness there — let your doctor know. He or she can determine what the problem is with ultrasound and other tests.

Most men diagnosed with testicular cancer can still have children. Men diagnosed with testicular cancer need surgery to remove the affected testicle. This removes the cancer and allows us to find out if you need simple surveillance, radiation or chemotherapy. You only need one testicle to produce sperm and the male sex hormone testosterone, and only 1 to 2 percent of men with testis cancer get it in both testicles. Most testis cancer patients can have children because usually the opposite testicle makes a normal amount of sperm.

In most cases, recurrence after testicular cancer is low. Ideally, you’ll catch the problem early and surveillance — careful watching and waiting — will be the post-operative plan. If you had a low-stage tumor the main time for recurrence of the cancer is in the first two years. If you go that long cancer-free, the risk of recurrence is extremely low, about 1 percent. If you’re diligent and keep the appointments with your doctor to keep an eye on it, you shouldn’t run into trouble.

A cancer diagnosis is never a feel-good moment. But it’s important that you know that testicular cancer is one of the most treatable cancers out there.

1. For every pound of fat gained, you add seven miles of new blood vessels.

New tissue needs blood supply, so your vascular system expands to accommodate it. This also means your heart must work harder to pump blood through the new network, which may reduce oxygenation and nutrient replenishment in other tissues. Lose a pound? Your body will break down and reabsorb the unneeded blood vessels from the previous tissue.

2. You are taller in the morning than in the evening.

When you crawl out of the sack in the morning you are at your tallest. On average, you are approximately one half inch taller when you wake in the morning, thanks to excess fluid between within your spinal discs. While you are sleeping, these fluids replenish. During the day your body has to deal with the stress of standing, so the discs become compressed and the fluid seeps out. This results in you losing a small amount of extra height.

3. Your skin is an organ.

Just like the liver, heart, and kidneys, your outer covering is an organ. An average man has enough skin on his body to cover approximately twenty square feet. For an average woman it is approximately seventeen square feet. Approximately 12% of your weight is from your skin. And, your skin replaces 45,000+ cells in only a few seconds. It's constantly growing new skin and shedding old skin.

4. There are more than 600 individual skeletal muscles and 206 bones in your body.

If all 600+ muscles contracted and pulled in the same direction, you could lift over twenty tons of resistance. Additionally, the adult skeleton is composed of 206 bones, but at birth an infant skeleton contains approximately 350 bones. Over time, some of the 350 bones fuse together and eventually grow to the 206 adult figure.

5. You need to consume a quart of water each day for four months to equate to the amount of blood your heart pumps in one hour.

Additionally, over a lifetime, at your normal (resting) heart rate you will have pumped enough blood to fill thirteen oil super tankers. To further expound on this fact, on average, your heart beats 40,000,000 times per year. Doing the math, over your lifetime (both men and women averaged), that results in 2,600,000,000 heartbeats (two billion, six hundred million). This does not even factor in your increased heartbeats due to your love of exercise.

The Temple of Artemis in Sardis was the fourth largest Ionic temple in the world. Originally built in 300 BC by the ancient Greeks, the temple was renovated by the Romans in the 2nd century AD. During the Roman period it served also as a temple of the imperial cult.

Just outside the entrance was an altar of Artemis much older than the temple, from as early as the 6th century BC. In the Hellenistic period the altar was incorporated into a large stepped platform that still exists.

Most of what remains today dates from the Roman rebuild in the 2nd century. Only two complete columns and a few partial ones still stand, but the temple remains an impressive sight against the backdrop of the acropolis.

On the western side of the temple is a freestanding altar to Artemis that dates from the 6th-5th century BC. Built against the southeast corner of the temple was a small Christian chapel of the 4th century.

Immortality is impossible, say scientists studying the mathematics of aging

While healthcare has dramatically extended our lifespans by preventing certain causes of death, aging still inevitably takes its fatal toll. And, as scientists report in a new Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study, that’s not going to change: Whether it’s by cancer or run-of-the-mill cell destruction, aging and death is mathematically inescapable.

In the paper published Monday, Joanna Masel, Ph.D., and Paul Nelson, Ph.D., both of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona, provide mathematical evidence that aging and eventual death must happen, no matter how we intervene in the aging process.

They explain that every cell in the body is tasked with two opposing missions: ensuring its own survival and supporting the organism it’s a part of. Masel and Nelson reason that this endless push and pull between those missions means that aging is unstoppable.

“If you have [no competition] or too little, then damaged cells accumulate and you get senescence,” Masel tells Inverse. “And if you have more than zero, then you get cancer. Either way, you get decreasing vitality with age.”

If we don't die of disease, we will probably die of aging or cancer.

The team came to this conclusion by creating a mathematical model of cell competition within an organism. Cells in a human body, they explain, face a unique set of forces under the dynamic of competition: On one hand, cells need to work together for the body to function properly. But on the other hand, those cells must compete with each other for survival, and natural selection among those cells means that competition allows only the fittest cells to survive. This competition, the authors explain, results in cancer as the cells that inevitably find ways to game the system are the ones that end up growing uncontrollably.

When a human ages normally, the survival of any individual cell is sacrificed in the name of the organism’s health. In other words, a certain portion of each cell’s output is devoted to collective health instead of individual health. Ultimately, the triumph of cooperation over competition means that bodies accumulate dead or dying cells in a way that eventually leads to what we know as aging.

Natural selection is a process that’s more commonly liked with the genetic evolution of a population of individuals than of cells, but previous research has shown it plays a role in aging too as the cells in your body need to survive and work together in order for a person to live. Nelson, a postdoc in Masel’s lab, says the new research makes an even stronger statement about how the process of natural selection affects human aging.

“Even if selection were perfect, we would still get aging because the cells in our body are evolving all the time,” says Nelson.

Cancer cells are those that "win" natural selection within the body because of their ability to proliferate unstoppably.

Thinking of human body cells in terms of natural selection may make it sound like a good idea to limit weaker cells that will contribute to a body’s decline. But this is more complicated than it sounds, because culling sluggish cells in the name of competitive advantage could create room for undying cancer cells to gain a foothold.

“As soon as there’s an opportunity for some cells to do better than others, there’s an opportunity for them to game that system and become cancer,” says Masel.

Nelson conceived this research while pursuing a different project, one that was looking at similar ideas of the role of selection in aging. Originally, he was working on developing a model to explain how gene regulation in cells might change over time due to aging. In the course of his research, he began looking for models of cell competition as it relates to aging.

“I didn’t find any that looked like what I was looking for, so I set this up,” Nelson says regarding the PNAS paper. “I noticed that the change over time is always negative. Once you put cancer and cell sluggishness together and put in cell competition, you get the conclusion that cell function will always get worse over time.”

In other words, no matter which way cell competition gets balanced, you’ll inevitably either end up with cancer cells or sluggish, poorly functioning cells over time.

“That was an unexpected outcome,” he says. “I didn’t set out to show that.”

A biologically inspired, flapping-wing, hybrid aerial-aquatic microrobot.

The insect-inspired machine is about 1,000 times lighter than previous aerial-aquatic bots. The new robot that can move between air and water is a lightweight.

Weighing the same as about six grains of rice, it is the lightest robot that can fly, swim and launch itself from water, an international team of researchers reports October 25 in Science Robotics. The bot is about 1,000 times lighter than other previously developed aerial-aquatic robots. In the future, this kind of aquatic flier could be used to perform search-and-rescue operations, sample water quality or simply explore by air or sea.

To hover, the bot flaps its translucent wings 220 to 300 times per second, somewhat faster than a housefly. Once submerged, the tiny robot surfaces by slowly flapping its wings at about nine beats per second to maintain stability underwater.

Still, the design needs work: The machine doesn’t land well, and it can only pierce the water’s surface with the help of soap, which lowers the surface tension. More importantly, the experiment points to the possibilities of incorporating different forms of locomotion into a single robot.

Operation Overmatch. Video Game

Operation Overmatch

The U.S. Army is developing a new way to test technologies and tactics—but first they have to get tens of thousands of soldiers to play it.

As far as video games go, Operation Overmatch is rather unremarkable. Players command military vehicles in eight-on-eight matches against the backdrop of rendered cityscapes—a common setup of games that sometimes have the added advantage of hundreds of millions of dollars in development budgets. Overmatch does have something unique, though: its mission. The game’s developers believe it will change how the U.S. Army fights wars.

Overmatch’s players are nearly all soldiers in real life. As they develop tactics around futuristic weapons and use them in digital battle against peers, the game monitors their actions. Each shot fired and decision made, in addition to messages the players write in private forums, is a bit of information soaked up with a frequency not found in actual combat, or even in high-powered simulations without a wide network of players.

The data is logged, sorted, and then analyzed, using insights from sports and commercial video games. Overmatch’s team hopes this data will inform the Army’s decisions about which technologies to purchase and how to develop tactics using them, all with the aim of building a more forward-thinking, prepared force.

Operation Overmatch is, in the muted wording of the Department of Defense, an “early synthetic prototyping” effort. The game takes technologies at the beginning stages of their development, creates limited but accurate models of them, and tests these models in a virtual environment. Overmatch stands apart from previous initiatives to refine technologies through simulations in its wide network of human players who only need a computer and email address to access the game.

While the game currently has about 1,000 players recruited by word of mouth and outreach from the Overmatch team, the developers eventually want to involve tens of thousands of soldiers. This milestone would allow for millions of hours of game play per year, according to project estimates, enough to generate rigorous data sets and test hypotheses.

Ara Guler. The Eye of Istanbul and Street Photography

Ara Güler is an Armenian-Turkish photojournalist, nicknamed "the Eye of Istanbul" or "the Photographer of Istanbul". He is considered one of Turkey's few internationally known photographers.

In 1958, the American magazine company Time–Life opened a branch in Turkey, and Güler became its first correspondent for the Near East. Soon he received commissions from Paris Match, Stern, and The Sunday Times in London. After completing his military service in 1961, Güler was employed by the Turkish magazine Hayat as head of its photographic department.

In the 1960s, Güler's photographs were used to illustrate books by notable authors and were displayed at various exhibitions throughout the world. His works were exhibited in 1968 in 10 Masters of Color Photography at the New York Museum of Modern Art and at Photokina Fair in Cologne, Germany. His book Türkei was published in Germany in 1970.
His photos on art and art history were used in Time, Life, Horizon and Newsweek and publications of Skira of Switzerland.

Güler attaches the greatest importance to human presence in his photographs and describes himself as a "visual historian". "When I'm taking a picture of Aya Sofia, what counts is the person passing by who stands for life", he said. He believes that photography should provide a memory of people, of their lives and especially their suffering. While he considers that art lies, he believes that photography can only reflect reality. He embraces the identity of a photojournalist because he does not attach much value to photography as an artistic pursuit, which to him would have little value. He does not consider photography to be an art.

The Tatev Monastery is a 9th-century Armenian Apostolic monastery located on a large plateau near the Tatev village in Syunik Province in southeastern Armenia. Tatev is known as the bishopric seat of Syunik and played a significant role in the history of the region as a center of economic, political, spiritual and cultural activity.

The monastery is the "best-known site" in Syunik. Wings of Tatev, a cableway from Tatev to Halidzor village was opened in October 2010. It was included in the Guinness World Records as world's "longest non-stop double track cable car."

According to tradition, Tatev Monastery is named after Eustateus, a disciple of St. Thaddeus the Apostle, who preached and was martyred in this region. His name has evolved to Tatev.

The fortified Tatev monastery consists of three churches (Sts. Paul and Peter, St. Gregory the Illuminator and St. Mary), a library, dining hall, belfry, mausoleum as well as other administrative and auxiliary buildings.

Elon Musk reveals first photo of LA high speed tunnel

Elon Musk has revealed the first photo of LA tunnel, which is constructed by his Boring Company.

Musk has received official permission from the local authorities and now digs a test section of the tunnel, which according to authors will provide quick transportation in large American cities.

The 150-metre (500ft) shaft, excavated by the billionaire's tunnel-digging firm The Boring Company, "should be 2 miles (3.2km) long in three or four months".

The photo shows how the tunnel looks in reality. The project has been demonstrated only through the video concept so far.

Самая старая библия в мире была найдена бедуином на севере Иордании, в пещере, находящейся в отдаленной пустынной местности. Открытие было сделано в 2005—2007 годах, но широкой общественности о находке, которая, по мнению ученых, перевернет всю библейскую историю, стало известно лишь весной 2011 года.

По случайности, наводнение в одной из пещер, находящейся на севере Иордании, открыло две потайные ниши, в которых находились семьдесят свинцовых книг, соединенных между собой проволокой.

Каждый древний манускрипт, выбитый на свинцовых пластинах, состоит из 5−15 страниц размером с обычную кредитную карточку.
Исследования металла показали, что артефакт может датироваться первым веком нашей эры. Таким образом, эта находка является самой древней библией в мире.

Предполагается, что эта древняя христианская реликвия была создана в 70 году н. э., первыми христианами, спешно покинувшими Иерусалим после его падения. Также ученые полагают, что манускрипты, составляют Книгу откровений, упомянутую в Библии, и являются доказательством неиудейского происхождения христианства. Karabakh’s Gandzasar Monastery will mark 777th anniversary

The upcoming Sunday will mark the 777th anniversary since the consecration of Gandzasar Monastery of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Gandzasar monastery is a 10th to 13th century Armenian monastery situated in the Mardakert district of de facto Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. "Gandzasar" means treasure mountain or hilltop treasure in Armenian. The monastery holds relics believed to belong to St. John the Baptist and his father St Zechariah.

Gandzasar is now the seat of the Archbishop of Artsakh appointed by the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Women are nicer than men. Myth or science ?

Richard Thaler has just won the Nobel prize for economics for his work explaining how human choice can be influenced. The insight that people make decisions for all sorts of reasons, not all of them based on a cool assessment of the consequences, led Professor Thaler to global acclaim as the slayer of homo economicus.

Homo economicus was an entirely fictional character who decided whose turn it was to put the bin out on rational grounds. Thaler was, among his lesser achievements, David Cameron’s favourite economist, his nudge theory credited with encouraging people to stop smoking and eat more healthily.

What Professor Thaler, in his moment of glory, may not yet realise is that his insights may already be on their way to extinction, just like homo economicus. He is being nudged out of the future by biology: to be precise, by neuroeconomics, which like his is an interdisciplinary science but one that studies brain activity, or the lack of it, to draw conclusions about why people behave as they do.

Today comes news from this new frontline: a paper in the esteemed Nature Human Behaviour journal that shows that women’s brains make them nicer than men. Women’s biology makes them a soft touch! Putting the bins out is, as the prime minister once claimed, a boy job, but that’s only so they don’t have to do the washing up. So we can reconcile ourselves to being good team players and doing the housework, because once again science has shown that that is what we are predisposed to do.

At least, that is one way of looking at it. Another way is to say that men are mean: the University of Zurich research actually found that women divided equally between those who would share a wad of cash and those who would keep it for themselves while men were slightly less likely to share. Many women are actually just as mean as most men. Deprive both groups of the neurotransmitter dopamine, however, and women became less generous and men slightly more. The scientists insist that this is about dopamine (their paper is entitled “The dopaminergic reward system underpins gender differences in social preferences”) but in the wider, more prejudiced world, it will look like one more justification for keeping women away from the brute hurlyburly of a man’s world.

There are few more entrancing subjects than the way brains work and why. The connection between behaviours and chemical actions and reactions is astonishing. The scientific method is awesome. So in this sceptical age where no one is trusted at all on anything however admirable their qualifications I am reluctant to question any finding that has, as this one does, the imprimatur of Nature. But really?

It’s not the thoroughness of their work that I question. I’m not for a moment doubting that neuroeconomics is a proper area of research that is capable of illuminating important aspects of behaviour. Why people behave as they do, particularly when they appear to behave against their own self-interest, is a subject of enduring fascination. It is also potentially useful.

What I am finding harder to understand is this particular use of neuroeconomics. Behavioural economics, with its interest in how to influence choices through environmental factors such as the way the choice is presented, has obvious applications. But this kind of neuroeconomics? The role of dopamine in making people behave more generously feels interesting in the way that all knowledge is interesting, but then what?

The practicality of research is relevant not because it is desirable that research should always have some clearly understood purpose – which would obviously be a terrible limit to discovery – but because nowadays, unhappily, it almost always does. Not far behind most research stands a drug company eager to find ways of applying in an innovative way the molecules for which it already owns the patent.

The team behind the Nature Human Behaviour paper that suggests men are meaner than women may have such a backer. Maybe one of the giant Swiss-based drugs companies has a drug discovery department tasked with creating a whole new market to transform the proverbial stinginess of men.

On the other hand, it may be something less imaginatively challenging. Perhaps the paper doesn’t only appear to play into a tediously familiar trope which might be called the Mars/Venus thing. Or why girls like pink. Or that women are a soft touch. Maybe that is what it is actually doing. I just can’t quite work out why.

As a recent book by Angela Saini, Inferior, argued, every piece of research points in one direction: that neurological differences that can be unquestionably attributed to gender appear to be vanishingly small, and (as the Zurich paper clearly acknowledges) intensely difficult to separate from the other powerful societal and cultural influences that divide boys and girls from the pink and blue cot blankets onwards.

So here’s an idea for another study. I’d be interested – I’m not sure if it’s a work for a behavioural or a neuroeconomist – in research that tried to find out why reputable scientists who could be, say, finding a cure for Alzheimer’s, instead go for yet another trot along the familiar avenue that seeks to explain gender difference as our neurological destiny.

Australian and Canadian scientists have been referred to as hypersexuality and sex addiction, having the desire to have sex in person continuously, explaining the reason for psychological discomfort in the inability to control the person's sexual behaviour.

According to research published in results of sexual behavior archives, scientists have developed a concept called ' hypersexual cycle ' as a result of examination of people. This cycle contains stages such as sexual desire, constant active behaviour, saturation and period of sexual fatigue. By time of sexual fatigue, patient is taking his body to rest. After a while, patient's re-awakening with cycle repeats. As one of reasons for this, cognitive insufficiency is defined as memory disorders.

Еще в первом веке нашей эры подвергались насмешкам Плутарха те, кто уверял, что луна над Афинами лучше луны коринфской; в XVII веке Мильтон замечал, что Бог, как правило, в первую очередь являлся Своим добрым англичанам; Фихте в начале XIX века утверждал, что обладать сильным характером и быть немцем, несомненно, одно и то же. Итак, патриотов становится все больше; по их собственному признанию, ими движет – достойное внимания или наивное – желание способствовать развитию лучших черт аргентинского характера. Они, однако, понятия не имеют о том, что такое аргентинцы, предпочитая определять их как производную от чего-то постороннего, скажем, от испанских завоевателей, или от воображаемой католической традиции, или от «британского империализма».

Аргентинец, в отличие от североамериканцев и почти всех европейцев, не отождествляет себя с Государством. Это можно отнести за счет того обстоятельства, что в этой стране обычно отвратительные правители или, как правило, Государство являет собою непостижимую абстракцию46; но несомненно, аргентинец – индивидуум, а не общественное существо. Гегелевская мысль о Государстве как воплощении нравственной идеи покажется ему неудачной шуткой. Фильмы, снятые в Голливуде, зачастую с восторгом излагают историю, в которой человек (как правило, журналист) завязывает дружбу с преступником, чтобы затем предать его в руки полиции; аргентинец, для которого дружба – это страсть, а полиция – своего рода мафия, воспринимает такого героя как отъявленного подлеца.

Аргентинец, как и Дон Кихот, полагает, что «каждый сам даст ответ за свои грехи» и что «людям порядочным не пристало быть палачами своих близких, до которых, кстати сказать, им и нужды нет» («Дон Кихот», 1,22). Не раз, следуя замысловатым построениям испанского литературного стиля, я подозревал, что мы безнадежно разнимся с Испанией; этих двух строк из «Дон Кихота» достаточно, чтобы убедиться в ошибке, они – как бы символ нашей неявной, тихой близости. Это же подтверждает одна ночь в аргентинской литературе: та отчаянная ночь, когда деревенский сержант полиции восклицает, что не допустит преступления, убийства храбреца, и начинает сражаться против собственных солдат бок о бок с Мартином Фьерро.

Для европейца мир – космос, где каждый внутренне соответствует той функции, которую выполняет, а для аргентинца он – хаос. Европейцы и североамериканцы считают, что книга, заслужившая какую-либо премию, стоит того, аргентинец же полагает, что, возможно, несмотря на премию, книга окажется неплохой. Как правило, аргентинец не доверяет обстоятельствам. Вряд ли ему известна история о том, что на земле всегда живут тридцать шесть праведников – «amed Wufniks47, – неведомых людям и творящих благодеяния тайно, благодаря которым существует мир; если он узнает эту историю, то не удивится, что эти праведники безымянны и безвестны... Аргентинский национальный герой – одиночка, сражающийся против многих, – теперь (Фьерро, Морей-ра, Черный Муравей), в будущем и в прошлом (Сегундо Сомбра). В других литературах не встречается ничего подобного. Обратимся, например, к творчеству двух больших европейских писателей: Киплинга и Франца Кафки. На первый взгляд между ними нет ничего общего, однако основная тема одного из них – оправдание порядка (железная дорога в «Kim»48, мост в «The Bridge– Builders»49, римская стена в «Рuск of Pook's Hill»50), а другого – невыносимое и трагическое одиночество человека, которому не находится места, хотя бы самого скромного, в распорядке Вселенной.

Перечисленные мною аргентинские черты характера считаются отрицательными, направленными против порядка, к тому же они не поддаются объяснению с политической точки зрения. Беру на себя смелость утверждать обратное. Главнейшая проблема нашего времени (с пророческой ясностью увиденная почти забытым ныне Спенсером) – это все усиливающееся вмешательство Государства в действия индивидуума; в борьбе с этим злом, имя которому коммунизм и нацизм, аргентинский индивидуализм, возможно, бесполезный или даже приносивший вред до той поры, получает оправдание, оказывается нужным.

Без надежды, с ностальгическим чувством я размышляю об абстрактной возможности существования партии, которая была бы близка аргентинцам, партии, которая правила бы нами в самой минимальной степени.

Национализм стремится заворожить нас видением Государства, причиняющего бесконечное беспокойство; эта утопия, воплощенная на земле, могла бы оказать спасительное действие, состоящее в том, что все станут стремиться создать – и в конце концов создадут – ее противоположность.

Сенсация: шимпанзе в Африке придумали какого-то бога и ему молятся

Это действительно сенсация. Впервые ученые увидели зарождение религии не у людей, а у животных! А именно — группа шимпанзе в Африке без какого-либо смысла принялась строить пирамидки из камней в пустых стволах старых деревьев.

Видеокамеры зафиксировали, как это происходит. Старые самцы подходят к «святому» месту, с громким криком кидают в пустой ствол дерева очередной камень, и с благоговением удаляются. Что самое поразительное, после того, как они положат камень, шимпанзе несколько секунд раскачиваются из стороны в сторону, делая совершенно несвойственные им движения. Такое впечатление, что они молятся или медитируют. Об этом пишет журнал Scientific Reports. Ученые считают, что шимпанзе придумали себе какую-то религию, символом ее сделали кучки камней, а пустые стволы старых деревьев стали прото-храмами.

В самом деле, крупные и красивые камни — видимо, самые древние «храмы» человечества. Люди до сих пор поклоняются отдельным камням, например, Синему камню на окраине Переславля Залесского. А в античности, согласно свидетельствам древних авторов, таких культовых камней было множество. Их украшали венками и поливали маслом. Кучки камней были святыми, запретными местами практически по всех религиях, например, у нас на Севере. Считается, что каждый камень в куче — это душа предка. Ученые считают, что и шимпанзе кидают камень в кучу тогда, когда умирает их сородич.

Религия считается главным отличием человека от животного. Классическая антропология говорит, что животные бросают своих покойных и не проявляют к ним интереса. Появление погребений ученые считают важнейшим признаком превращение животного в человека. Но в случае с шимпанзе мы видим даже не погребения (то, что обезьяны скорбят по своим покойным, было известно и ранее), а настоящие культовые места.

Таким образом, религия свойственна не только людям, но и животным. Наверняка в сознании шимпанзе, которые строят пирамидки из камней, есть представление о неких духах, есть имена этих духов, а значит, есть место для абстрактных понятий очень высокого уровня. Не исключено, что у шимпанзе может даже зародиться наука (хотя ранняя религия и ранняя наука — это практически одно и то же).

Что же случилось, ученые раньше просто не замечали религии у животных? Или в наше время по непонятным причинам вдруг началось быстрое развитие ума у обезьян? Скорее первое — открытие стало возможным благодаря мощным видеокамерам, работающим автономно, а это — недавнее изобретение.

Американские специалисты рассказали о 7 простых правилах, следование которым может помочь предотвратить сердечную недостаточность и прожить подольше. Чем больше правил соблюдает человек, тем ниже риск развития смертельно опасной проблемы.

Оказалось, что соблюдение каждого последующего правила уменьшало риск развития этой болезни на 23%. А вот как выглядят все правила:

Самое старое дерево в мире возрастом 9 500 лет растёт в Швеции

В Швеции найдена ель, возраст которой достигает около 9,5 тысячи лет. Она расположена в горной местности страны. Ученые смогли, используя радиоуглеродный анализ, выяснить возраст дерева. Под исследование попала корневая структура растения.

Профессор географии Лейф Каллман смог обнаружить дерево в 2004 году. Он дал ему название Старый Тикко в честь своей умершей собаки. С момента обнаружения оно находится под пристальным вниманием. Дерево не обладает внушительными габаритами, так как внешние климатические условия не позволяют ему вырасти до громадных размеров. Постоянные ветра и холода сильно изменили внешность ели, превратив ее в дерево-бонсай.

Ученый убежден, что старая ель была частью старейшего леса, которое раньше покрывало Великобританию во время Ледникового периода. В то время уровень моря за счет обледенения был ниже на 120 метров.

Ученые проведут эксперимент по созданию ускорителя нового типа

Европейский центр ядерных исследований в сотрудничестве с учеными новосибирского Института ядерной физики (ИЯФ) имени Г.И.Будкера проведет эксперимент по созданию ускорителя нового типа. Эксперимент будет проведен в конце 2016 года. Об этом «Интерфаксу» сообщил главный научный сотрудник ИЯФ Константин Лотов.

По его словам, цель эксперимента — впервые в мире показать, что протонами можно возбудить плазменную волну и затем ускорить в этой волне частицы с темпом пока в 10 раз больше, чем в обычных ускорителях.

Ускорение заряженных частиц в плазме позволяет сделать его темп значительно выше — энергию в несколько гигаэлектронвольт можно набрать буквально на нескольких сантиметрах, добавил он.

Соответственно, ускорители, которые имеют сейчас размеры до одного километра, могут быть «сжаты» до 10- 15 метров. В результате в перспективе может быть получен компактный источник синхротронного излучения, имеющий самые широкие области применения — от медицины до материаловедения и металлообработки.

Спелеологи нашли самую глубокую пещеру в мире | Самая глубокая пещера

Американский исследователь пещер Билл Стоун заявил о том, что располагающаяся в мексиканском штате Оахака система пещер Чеве, является самой глубокой в мире. В 2017 году состоится экспедиция, в ходе которой ученым предстоит измерить глубину пещеры и подтвердить это заявление. Участие в ней примут от 60 до 70 спелеологов.

Предположения о том, что Чеве является самой глубокой пещерой в мире основаны на опыте, проведенном исследователями в 1990 году. Тогда спелеологи бросили в воду в пещере семь килограммов красителя. Спустя время окрашенная в зеленый цвет вода попала в расположенную по соседству реку Санто-Доминго, преодолев расстояние в 2,5 километра, передает Lenta.

Отмечается, что площадь туннелей Чеве в два раза больше Манхэттена и составляет порядка 175 квадратных километров. Подобные пещеры являются важным элементом карстовых водоносных горизонтов, которые обеспечивают питьевой водой сотни миллионов человек по всему миру. Кроме того, в подобных пещерах ученые зачастую обнаруживают хорошо сохранившиеся окаменелости, а также месторождения полезных ископаемых. Это позволяет лучше понять, как изменялась Земля на протяжении веков.

Кроме того, спелеологами движет любопытство и интерес к неведомому. «Конечно, в мире еще остались непокоренные горы, но их можно рассмотреть в Google Earth еще до восхождения. Можно отправиться на дно океана, но и его уже нанесли на карту с помощью сонаров, да и экспедиции туда слишком дороги. В пещерах же можно открыть неизведанное даже с самым скромным бюджетом», — отметил спелеолог Зеб Лилли.

Самой глубокой пещерой мира сейчас считается «Воронья-Крубера», которая располагается в Абхазии на Гагринском хребте массива Арабика. Ее глубина составляет 2199 метров.
