A valuable medical resource has been added to the database collection of the TWU Libraries.

New Database AccessMedicine

What is AccessMedicine? AccessMedicine is a comprehensive, authoritative, online medical resource which is continuously updated with content optimized for any mobile device. Through it, TWU students and faculty members can access a variety of resources including leading medical textbooks that facilitate point-of-care decision-making; an integrated drug database; videos; self-assessment; customizable patient education; downloadable images; case files to facilitate better understanding and evaluation of real-world experiences, and more.

How do I access AccessMedicine? Follow the path TWU Libraries homepage > Databases A-Z List > A > AccessMedicine, then log in with your Pioneer Portal username and password.

Denton Library to Host CTLC Conference on August 4th

Break out the earbuds. The (Denton) Blagg-Huey Library will be even busier than normal on Friday, August 4, 2017 as it hosts the 2017 Cross Timbers Library Collaborative Conference.

The library will be open as scheduled but visitors may notice increased traffic and noise in the building. Looking for peace and quiet? Library staff members at the Information and Circulation Desks may be able to assist you, and headphones are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.

Pardon Our Progress

Exciting changes are in the works at the (Denton) Blagg-Huey Library. The Write Site is coming to the second floor, computers and the Children's Collection are moving to the first floor, the Ground Floor is being renovated--and that's just for starters.

As exciting as these changes are, they will likely come with some unwelcome noise over the summer. Looking for peace and quiet? Library staff members at the Information and Circulation Desks may be able to help you, and headphones are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.

Dr. Mary Evelyn Blagg Huey (1922-2017)

The TWU Libraries pay tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Mary Evelyn Blagg Huey, who passed away on June 27, 2017.

The first female president of TWU--and the only alumna to hold that post--Dr. Blagg Huey was also an honoree of the Texas Women's Hall of Fame. The TWU Denton campus library was named in her honor.

A photography display curated by Woman's Collection staff members in honor of Dr. Blagg Huey and her decade-long tenure as president of TWU is available for viewing just inside the entrance to the Blagg-Huey Library.

The (Denton) Blagg-Huey Library; the Dallas Center Library; and the Houston ARC will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 in observance of Independence Day. All TWU Libraries will reopen on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at the normally scheduled times.

The libraries' virtual services (TWUniversal, databases, Subject Guides and more) are available 24/7 via the TWU Libraries website and TWU Libraries Mobile.

From Beginning to End: The Wimberly Bridge

A piece of TWU history is no more.

The pedestrian bridge over Bell Avenue on the TWU Denton campus, near the Student Union, was torn down on Friday, June 23, 2017. A part of campus history since 1962, the Wimberly Bridge now lives on only in our memories and in photographs and other records.

Here, courtesy of the University Archives and current TWU Libraries staff members, a few reminders of the bridge's history.

The University Archives, housed with and administered by the staff of the Woman's Collection based at the Blagg-Huey Library on the Denton campus, contains decades of records chronicling the history of TWU and its unique standing among Texas colleges and universities.

Dallas Pride: How to Make a Rainbow

As we head into the final week of LGBT Pride Month 2017, the library and Office of Student Life at the TWU T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Science-Dallas Center recommend a DIY project that can serve as a charming decoration and year-round reminder of the importance of inclusivity.

This week the Dallas Center Library began hosting a table of supplies and directions, sponsored by the Office of Student Life, needed to make rainbow mobiles (left). The last day to participate is Friday, June 23, 2017.

Believe This, Not That: Some Real Help for Fake News

Engaged citizens like to keep up with the news of the day, and many of us do that on Facebook and other social media. This is convenient, but is it a reliable way to stay informed? As with most things, it depends on the quality of the information we're taking in.

In the spring, Librarian Abby Morris conducted workshops on identifying fake news. Missed them? Read on for some real help for fake news.

What Fake News Is (And Is Not)

Fake news is not information that you disagree with, but news/websites/images that are designed to mislead and misinform (unsurprisingly, this usually has to do with money; sensational headlines and images draw attention and invite clicks--increasing site visits, shares, and ad revenues).

Believe This, Not That
How can you know fake news when you see it? Three approaches can help.

Check a specific story or fact by consulting a reputable fact-checking site. Examples include Snopes, Politifact, and FactCheck.Org. Don't see what you're looking for? Most invite you to submit your questions.
Fact check like a pro with the advice featured on the tip- and link-packed guides from Indiana University East and the Tri-College Libraries. For some good advice on staying informed watch the five-minute How To Choose Your News (below) by Damon Brown.

What You Should Know About Textbooks on Reserve

Did you know that the textbooks you need may not cost you a cent? Many are on reserve at the (Denton) Blagg-Huey Library, the Dallas Center Library, or the Houston ARC.

WHAT ARE RESERVE ITEMS?

Reserve items are books and other items, kept at the Circulation Desks at each of the TWU Libraries, for which professors have requested abbreviated, temporary loan periods for the convenience of their students. Bring your current TWU ID to the Circulation Desk at your TWU campus library; a staff member will check if the textbook you need is available.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT USING RESERVE ITEMS?

Most of them must be used in the library, and the average checkout time for reserve items is four hours. Reserve items cannot be renewed, but can be checked out again--we simply ask that you wait a full checkout period before checking an item out again (for a book with a four-hour checkout period, for example, you would need to wait four hours after returning it before checking it out again.)

DOES THE LIBRARY CARRY TEXTBOOKS FOR EVERY TWU CLASS?

No. Although many high-demand textbooks are on reserve, not all textbooks are available. If you think your textbook should be on reserve but isn't, talk to your professor; s/he may send us a copy.

It's LGBT Pride Month 2017

Each June we celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month. According to the Library of Congress, LGBT Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Riots, a series of violent confrontations in 1969 between police officers and gay rights activists. The riots, sometimes referred to as the Stonewall Uprising, took place outside the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village gay bar. At the time it was illegal to be openly gay.

That June, police raided several gay bars; on the 28th officers began arresting Stonewall Inn patrons. Rather than retreat as usual, however, customers in and outside the bar were uncooperative and became violent, tossing objects at patrol vehicles, trapping officers, and “making them feel the same fear and humiliation that was a constant in [the customers'] lives” (Law and the Gay Rights Story by Walter Frank). The protest continued for more than five days as crowds grew to number in the thousands. The Stonewall Riots became the catalyst for a united and organized LGBT community, ultimately leading to the Gay Liberation Movement.

LGBT Pride Month is celebrated across the nation and around the world with parties, parades, picnics, concerts, and memorials for members of the LGBT community who lost their lives to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. Its purpose is to commemorate and recognize the impact that the LGBT community has had on America and beyond (Library of Congress).

Children's Collection on the Move

The Children's Collection is on the move.

As part of a space planning project underway at the (Denton) Blagg-Huey Library, the Children’s Collection is being moved from its current location on the library's Garden Level to the first floor near the vending machines.

Dogs in the House! Therapy dogs will visit the Blagg-Huey Library on the
Denton campus on Sunday, May 7th from 6-8 p.m. Because finals are ruff.

Spring 2017 finals week at the (Denton) Blagg-Huey Library will include free coffee, popcorn, and massages for TWU students--along with a chance to visit with some super-cute therapy dogs!

Get free coffee and popcorn in the first-floor lecture hall (Room 101) on Sunday, 5/7 at 7p and 10p; on Monday, 5/8 and Tuesday, 5/9 at 3p and 8p; and on Wednesday, 5/10 at 3p.

Therapy dogs will be in the building on Sunday, 5/7 from 6-8p, and to help ease that finals stress, free massages will be given at the library from 8-10p Sunday, 5/7 through Wednesday, 5/10.

All members of the TWU community are invited to attend a Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) event on Monday, May 8, 2017 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Pioneer Center for Student Excellence, Room 234 (on the second floor of the [Denton] Blagg-Huey Library). Returning FCBD speaker Dr. Jonathan Evans will talk about engaging students on a visual level in Visual Comprehension: How Comic Book Narrative Structure Can Aid in the Composition and Literature Classrooms. TWU Librarian Mandie Mims has won the TWU Book-in-Common Spring 2017 Essay Contest in the Staff category for her autobiographical essay The Amazing Mutant Shark Girl.

Awards were presented to contest winners in four categories--Undergraduate, Graduate, Faculty, and Staff--at the TWU Book-in-Common Essay Award Ceremony and Reception held on April 14, 2017 in the Pioneer Center for Excellence.

Mims is a Health Sciences Librarian based at the T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences-Dallas Center Library. Read her touching essay here.
