Razer is a company known for gaming peripherals, most notably their keyboards and computers. They’re also known for the Blade, a thin gaming laptop that combines smooth, minimalistic looks and great performance.

This time around, they’re fiddling with the concept of a gaming tablet, thanks to a full version of Windows 8. A gaming tablet is something that’s entirely possible, since you can install real games on Windows 8. With a bit of patience, Razer was able to come up with a product that crams good performance into tablet form.
Let’s take a look shall we?

Design
The Razer Edge looks just like other Windows 8 tablets, except you’ll find a big Razer logo on the back. It’s made from matte metal finish, giving it a high – end appeal. It’s quite chunky due to the parts used. It measures 0.75 inches thick and weighs 2.1 pounds.

Around the edges, you’ll find the ports you need. Up top, there’s one USB 3.0 port and a headset output. There’s also a front 2.0 megapixel camera for online chats.

Display
The Razer Edge sports a 10.1 – inch touchscreen IPS display. It has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. This works to the Edge’s advantage, since lower resolutions in gaming mean better frame rates.

However, one obvious drawback to this is that the interface looks cheap compared to 1080p tablets.
Overall though, the display works as it should. Colors are bright and viewing angles are good.

Hardware
It’s amazing how much research Razer has put into this product. They managed to cram a video card into the space of a tablet without sacrificing design. The Edge really looks like a Razer product.

Moving on to the insides, the Edge features an Intel Ivy Bridge processor. It’s an i5 – 3517U ultra low – voltage dual – core processor. It has a base clock speed of 1.9 GHz, but it can power up to 3.0 GHz when taxed with demanding programs.

For the graphics, it features NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 640M LE. It’s basically a lower – powered version of the GT 640M. It has 1 GB of DDR3 RAM and a GPU clock speed of 500 MHz.
To complete the package, there’s 8 GB of DDR3 memory and a 256 GB solid state drive.

Overall gaming is good, depending on what games you install. Obviously, weaker titles can have their graphics settings maxed out while more demanding titles need to be scaled back. All in all, the video card finds middle ground between performance and price.

Battlefield 3 can be played at a respectable speed of 38 fps, with all graphics settings set to medium. When cranked to high, it lowers to 24 fps. The popular Skyrim can be played at an amazing 60 fps, with all settings at medium again. Turning them to high gives you 41 fps.

Portal 2 on medium settings gives you an incredible 125 fps. When played on high, you get 90 fps. This means that other Valve titles that make use of the Source engine, such as Team Fortress 2 and DOTA 2 can be played at maximum settings without any problems at all.

Other Features
What would a gaming tablet be without a gamepad? Well, the Edge features a custom made controller that you can remove if you’re not busy playing games. Both sides feature analog sticks. On the left, there’s also a four – button arrow pad. On the right are four action buttons (A, B, X, Y) which will work great on games such as Darksiders II.

Overall, you can use the gamepad to control most games. But if that doesn’t work for you, you can always use a mouse and a keyboard. Thankfully, Razer also has made a dock. The Edge stands up and it has an HDMI out and three USB 2.0 ports. When placed in the dock, you can use Bluetooth with a keyboard and mouse of your choice.

Conclusion
The Edge is an amazing device that is very futuristic. However, it costs $1,500 and that’s something you need to take into account. You’re paying a high premium for mediocre performance, but you’re getting portability in return.

Overall though, it’s a great package that can even act as your main computer at times when you don’t have a desktop.

Saving a Sinking Ship: Samsung Bails Struggling Sharp

Apparently, not only Google has a plan for world domination.

Samsung has bought a 3% stake worth $112 million to stave Sharp which is experiencing financial difficulties lately.

This move by Samsung is seen by analysts as adding fuel to the fire in the Samsung-Apple rivalry. Sharp supplies a third of Apple's display panels while most of Samsung's display panels are manufactured by affiliate Samsung Display Co.

It is interesting to note that last year, during the climax of the bitter Apple-Samsung Patent War, the Cupertino company distanced itself from the South Korean giant and started ordering parts for its iPads and iPhones from different suppliers.

With Samsung now a stakeholder of Sharp, more courtroom battles between Samsung and Apple can be expected more in the future.

Too, last year, Sharp accepted a $120 million investment from processor giant Qualcomm in a deal that cited that the two companies will collaborate in developing new power-saving screens for mobile phones based on Sharp's proprietary IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) display technology.

Sharp has seen better days since the company has suffered from the rise of the Japanese Yen and the shift of consumers from big television displays to more compact tablets and smartphones. The massive investments placed by Sharps on its television division failed to pay off. Major operating losses and retrenchment ensued.

Well, desperate times call for desperate measures. Accepting the bailout from Samsung, Reuters reported that Samsung will have "a smooth supply of large-sized TV panels and help bolster the Japanese company’s chances of survival."

While the two Asian companies have done business in the past, this deal is expected to further cement the business relationship between the two.

Without the Samsung acquisition, it has been predicted by business analysts that Sharp will see a painful $4.5 billion loss this year and further lay-offs for employees.

This move by Samsung will certainly not go unnoticed in Mountain View. Recent reports indicate that Google is worried about Samsung becoming too powerful and might renegotiate the Android arrangement of the two giants.

See What TabletPCs Will Grace This Year

2012 has been a year of great technological wonders- including the rise of the smartphones and tablet computers. Mobile trends are expected to create bigger hypes this year, and we anticipate tech firms to get a leg up in the gizmo market competition by releasing products with a God-father imperative saying: “This is something you shouldn’t miss.”

This time, we look into the great possibility of tablet computers owning up the pie in the tech industry. Let’s see which tabletPCs are likely to reign in 2013, and what sorts of features make the cut:

1.    Apple iPad 5.

Every year, Apple releases new models of its device. And this tradition stretches across all devices- Macs, iPads, iPhones, and etc. This year, the release of the next iPad model is unmistakable. Unless companies do robust changes on its business road maps, Iconia B1, despite perceptions, can rise above the fame game.

3.    Three New Microsoft Surface Tablets

Detesting barriers on innovation, Microsoft swore that it will be more upbeat in releasing gadgets with a potent mixture of great design and superb functions. What with the successful buy-out of the 1st MS Surface, why not exponentially increase the chances by releasing three MS Surface models? For now, we’re content to hear fantastic integrations with the upcoming tablets: Nvidia Tegra 3 chip, unreleased AMD Temash APU, varied screen sizes and more!

4.    HTC Windows RT tablets

It looks like HTC is ready to heat its engines once again. Bloomberg (via Engadget) says that it HTC plans to introduce two tablets this year- one that is 12 inches and the other, 9 inches. The gizmos will run Windows RT and will have Qualcomm chips under its hood. Potentially, the 7-inch device can morph into what the tech industry calls a ‘phablet’, a hybrid of a phone and a tablet. Now, isn’t that phabulous?

5.    Asus Android Tablets

Banking less on its Microsoft devices, Asus reveals that its Android-powered devices are the ones that bring profits. And this was proven true when Asus, in partnership with Google, created the highly successful Google Nexus 7. The Taiwanese company expects to ship around 12 million Android tablets in 2013. Its supplies went up by 91% from 6.3 million units last year. According to Asus CFO David Chang, he hopes Asus will snag the top 2 spot in respects of combined shipments of notebooks and tablets this year.

6.    Samsung Galaxy Note 7

The next Samsung tablet is rumored to have a screen resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels. It will possibly come with a 1.6GHz Exynos 4412 chip. The number of tablets Samsung will release in the course of the whole year is still something unknown to many of us.

Is the US Ready for an Unlocked iPhone?

The iPhone 5 was probably one of the most awaited gadgets of the year. When it was finally available for sale, Apple reported selling about 5 million units in its first week alone, which was 1 million more units than when the iPhone 4S was launched. This is the scenario that Apple has been accustomed to and was expecting with the iPhone 5. The sales satisfied both the company and its stockholders because the surge in product sales meant higher stock prices. Apple knew just when to release their most awaited product; just in time for the gift-giving spree of the Christmas holidays. Of course, their new iPhone would make the perfect gift to give and to receive. The only downside to buying one was the phone carrier contracts; a mandatory requirement for the subsidized price ($300-$400 cheaper than a contract free phone). Almost the same thing happened when they sell ipad to the public.

Fast-forward to the present, just a few months later. Apple has finally made an unlocked version of the smartphone available via its online stores. There was no pomp or fan fare when the company made it available but of course, rumors spread after crates of the unlocked units were seen being delivered to quite a few Apple stores. However, the lowest priced iPhone 5 with 16GB is still a bank breaker at $649. Freedom indeed comes with a price in the case of these unlocked iPhones. Also, this version of the iPhone 5 does not work on CDMA networks, which limits choices for phone carriers.

This is still good news for phone users who want the freedom to choose their own respective carriers and also to be able to take advantage of the lower and cheaper data plans of other carriers. Also, unlocked phones are a big advantage to those who go out of the country often as they would not have to worry about switching phone units whenever they travel. The only thing that they would have to do is check on the available networks at their destination to make sure that their unit would work once they got there.

For Apple, this hopefully means an increase in sales as people will be enticed by their contract-free units. However, the phone carrier, in this case, AT&T, will probably feel the impact of this move with their multi-year contracts. But even so, Apple still prioritizes AT&T since users of Verizon and Sprint cannot take advantage of the unlocked phones since they will not work on CDMA networks.

It is Apple’s fans who are more than happy with this news. Now, they can use the iPhone 5 anywhere they go, even out of the country without worrying about the roaming charges as it can now work on a local carrier. The downside, of course is the high cost of getting the unit since customers have to pay upfront to be able to walk out of the store with an iPhone 5. Nevertheless, most people, especially loyal Apple followers, welcome this move.

From NVIDIA, The Fastest Mobile Processor in the World

NVIDIA has long been a key player in the computing world. They are known for producing processors for video cards or graphical processing units (GPUs). They have dominated this segment of the market with several GPUs topping the list of the best cards in the industry. A lot of gamers and digital artists prefer to have NVIDIA GPUs installed because of their reliability and processing power. Entering the world of mobile processors is a giant leap for NVIDIA. Intel is currently the dominant player in this segment of the market, and is serious competition. NVIDIA is a fairly new player in the market for mobile processors.

This year, NVIDIA introduced the Tegra 4 processor, which is now said to be the fastest mobile processor in the market. As for power efficiency, this chip is designed to maximize it. The set includes a battery saver core, which enables it to consume less energy when on standby. It consumes about 45% less power than the Tegra 3.

The NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor is getting people excited because of the many possibilities that it might bring, and not only to smartphones and tablet PCs. Its breakthrough in the field of Computational Photography Architecture enables it to deliver High Dynamic Range photos and videos. People who are into phoneography (those who use their smartphones to take photographs) are looking forward to this. It is no doubt a powerhouse chip. It would enable mobile devices and gadgets to perform much better and faster, making the user experience more enjoyable.

For now, there is no definite date as to when the Tegra 4 will be available commercially. Right now, people can still enjoy the Tegra 3, its predecessor, in Google Nexus tablets and Windows 8 Surface tablets. Tablets Apple Unveiled on October 24

Apple Inc. unveiled at a media event in California Theatre in downtown San Jose, California, what the company thinks are the key products for the 2012 Holiday Season. However, there is one surprise from the launch: They tossed the iPad 3 into oblivion with the fourth generation of the Apple tablet computer. The iPad that buyers got on March 22, 2012 is now obsolete. You better sell your old iPad now if you want to have the new one. But then again, this is always how Apple operates; surprises are no surprises.

The iPad 4

The biggest surprise in the event was the release of the iPad 4, a rehashed version of the “new” iPad (iPad 3), which was released on March 22, 2012. This really surprised a lot of people.

This new “new iPad” is officially called “the iPad with Retina Display” or the 4th Gen iPad. There are only few changes, but you might consider them important. The iPad 4 runs on the in-house A6X processor, which is twice the CPU and twice the GPU performance when you compare it to the A5X. Apple would cover the performance offered by Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro and the upcoming NVIDIA Tegra 4 processors. Another change is the 9-pin Lightning connector, which replaced the 30-pin one.

Another change is the front camera, now supporting HD Ready resolution (1280x720). However, the back camera still supports the 1080p video recording and automatic video stabilization. Taking pictures is still limited to five million pixels though.

The price is similar to the iPad 3 and starts at $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model, continuing up to $829 for a 64GB version with 4G and Wi-Fi.

The iPad Mini

This smaller iPad is as thin as a pencil (7.2 mm) and has a weight of a pad of paper (0.68 pounds, 308 grams, 0.31 kg).

Its screen is 7.9 inches diagonally. It offers the same resolution as the iPad 2 (1024 x 768), but with better pixel density. Sadly, Apple used the original A5, and not even the A5X. This means the iPad Mini has the same processor as the iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

Just like the big iPad, iPad Mini comes with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacity, with Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 3G/4G LTE capabilities. The Wi-Fi only models range in price for $329 to $529, while Wi-Fi+3G/4G models will set you back anywhere between $459 and $659.

Conclusion

Whether you love Apple or not, it is obvious that Apple is in fifth gear when they launch products. They make their old products obsolete within a year and offer features that you would not see anywhere else. They even kept the unpopular display ratio 4:3 on their tablet computers. This might be to say that it is big enough and it will offer the best possible performance.

Apple is indeed the best PC Company on the market, and their competitors know that. Now, we have to wait for the Windows 8 designs and see how impressive they are to capture an audience.

Apple Unveils iPad Mini

Apple released a smaller version of its famed iPad tablet computer, the iPad Mini, which is 7.9 inches, at a media event in San Jose, California on Tuesday, October 23. They also launched a fourth generation 9.7-inch iPad and updated Mac computers: 13-inch MacBook Pro, now with Retina Display, and a revised Mac Mini, the latest generation of iMac. With all of these launches, you might force yourself to sell used iPad!

This small iPad has been anticipated by many, even though the late Apple CEO and co-founder, Steve Jobs, dismissed smaller tablet computers during a conference for investors in October 2010.

"'[W]e don't think you can make a great tablet with a seven-inch screen," he said. "We think it's too small to express the software that people want to put on these things."

Apparently, Jobs estimated wrongly regarding seven-inch tablets. Amazon shipped millions of Kindle Fire tablets while Google shipped at least a million Nexus 7 models. Of course, Apple cannot afford to not go with the flow of the successes of their competitors.

"We sold more iPads in the June quarter than any PC manufacturer sold of their entire PC lineup," said CEO Tim Cook. He added that the iPad is hugely popular in the educational sector and is now penetrating the business market.

Processors: The latest generation of the 9.7-inch iPad now runs on A6X processor, which is a variant of the A6 chip processor in the iPhone 5. Camera: The iPad Mini has a front FaceTime HD camera and a back 5-megapixel iSight camera.

Nowadays, kids know how to use the computer and how to surf the Web. Most kids even use an e-mail account. However, parents should protect their kids from Internet stuff that is not suitable for kids. Besides, parents do not have any idea about who their kids are corresponding with. One solution is to prevent kids from having an e-mail, or just create a Google Mail account to keep an eye on what is happening. Another is to sell iPad, but that is too much.

There is another solution, however. There are specialized e-mail apps developed for kids. These apps are even more interesting for kids to use, while parents can still keep an eye on them. Here are e-mail apps for children!

Maily

This app has a beautiful web interface that your kid will sure enjoy using. It is very easy to install too. As a parent, you have to create an account. You can use Facebook or your actual e-mail address. You can then create an account for your kid, with his name and photo. All of these can be done on the iPad. You can now add contacts to your kid’s account. Those contacts are the only ones that can e-mail your child. More than that, they have to create a Maily account too.

The interface is very creative because it is more than just plain text. It includes colored pencils and paint brushes. There are also multiple stamps and it allows you to take photos to include them in the e-mail. It is very easy to use, even for a four year old. When your kid sends an e-mail, the parent will receive an alert. The contacted person will also receive an e-mail notification where they can reply through Maily’s web interface.

Kids Email

If your kid is older or you just want a better app for more controls, you can use Kids Email. This app is available for a free trial for thirty days. If you love it, you can pay an amount of $3 a month. If you want more control over your kid’s e-mail, then this app is well worth your money.

First, create an account on kidsemail.org. You can then add your kid’s account. There are options for that. You can choose between the regular interface (suitable for younger children), and a mature interface (for older ones). You will then configure the list of security settings, providing you the amount of control you want and need over your kid’s account. As an example, you can just let your kid send and receive e-mails only to and from the approved contacts. You will then get copies of the received and sent e-mail messages.

Other Options

You can also use these apps if you are not satisfied with the previous two:

Kid Safe Mail: This app gives you an extensive parental control. It offers multiple e-mail domains and a more elaboration option. Sadly, there is no free or trial version.

ZooBuh!: Similar to Kids Email, this allows you to restrict times in which your kid can use their e-mail accounts. This app costs $12 per year PER child. There is also no free or trial version.

Finding Apps Fast

This can be accessed by clicking the home button while on the first page of the home screen. You can also use the Spotlight Search to look for contacts and your e-mail messages.

As the name suggests, the new Kindle Fire HD model has an 8.9-inch display which has 1920 x 1200 pixels resolution and 254 pixels per inch. Unfortunately, the screen has noticeable glare because it has no air gap between the glass and the display.

The display feature, of course, is better with the new iPad, which comes with a Retina Display screen, giving its users a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels in its 9.7-inch screen. It also has 264 pixels per inch, which is obviously more than the new Kindle Fire HD model’s.

The dimensions of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 are 9.45 inches by 6.5 inches by 0.35 inches. Its weight is about 20 ounces. Compared to it, the new iPad is about 9.5 inches by 7.31 inches by 0.4 inches. The iPad 3’s weight is 23 ounces.

Camera

The new Kindle Fire HD has only one camera compared to iPad’s two cameras. The camera of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is good for video chatting with VoIP software like Skype, since it is facing the front.

Unlike the Kindle, the new Apple tablet has front 0.3 megapixel and 5 megapixel back cameras that can capture Full high definition 1080p videos at 30 FPS.

Network

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 has dual-band Wi-Fi and supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals. You can also choose the 4G service AT&T’s 4G LTE network. This feature goes to the new Amazon tablet because the new iPad has two models for networks: a Wi-Fi only or a 3G/4G model.

Of course, the iPad, as expected, is more expensive than any of its competitors. The 16GB model of the Kindle Fire HD 7 costs $199 while the 32GB has a price tag of $369. The 4G sets cost $499 for 32GB and $599 for 64GB. This is a lot cheaper than the Apple tablets: The new iPad 4G cost $629 for 16GB, $729 for 23GB, and $829 for 64GB.

There are a lot of places that sell iPad WiFi/3G 16GB and other mobile gadgets like tablet PCs and mobile phones. You can go and visit the nearest shop in your neighborhood or you can just go online to buy one. The great thing about this is that the consumer is given the freedom to choose the way he shops even for grocery items. Those who are intimidated when setting foot in tech shops, or those who live far from the big cities that have swanky stores can get their gadgets from large retail stores that sell anything. Yes, Target, Kmart, and Wal-Mart sell tablet PCs, too!

The latest news that rocked both the tech and business worlds was the announcement of Wal-Mart discontinuing distribution of the Amazon Kindle in its stores and online site. There is no denying that Amazon is one place where you can buy almost everything from small appliances to tech gadgets and even toiletries. It is much like a grocery store in every sense only that it has no physical store, as it is an online retail shop. You can say that it is already directly competing with the online shop of both Wal-Mart and Target because of the same items that they offer. But then, you can say the same thing about Wal-Mart and Target. These stores sell anything you can think of, which sort of makes them Amazon, only with actual stores.

Now that Amazon has offered the Kindle at a rock bottom price, the giant retailers do not have enough room to make a profit for every Kindle that they sell in their stores. Amazon itself is already cannibalizing its own sales with this move. So, it does not make business sense for Wal-Mart and Target to continue selling the Kindle if this continues, as they only get very minimal profits or none at all. Those retailers who sell iPad WiFi/3G 32GB and other tablet PCs might just end up doing the same thing because what’s the use of selling the Kindle if they do not make any profit out of it.

With this, Amazon is left with a greatly reduced number of channels where customers can purchase their product. If this move happens again with the other retailers that still sell Kindle, then it leaves Amazon with a very limited market. It might just end up with the Kindle being available only through online purchase through their website unless Amazon puts up a store in every major city in the country.

Come to think of it, this has worked for Apple. Through the years, Steve Jobs’ company has operated its own stores and kept authorized retailers at a minimum. This has given the company an aura of exclusivity that sits well with its loyal customers, and at the same time also allowed them to maximize profits. If Amazon wises up, they could follow this brave business model and operate stores themselves, and maybe even expand their product line to accessories and whatnot, building a better and stronger brand for themselves.

Contacts

Using the iPad, you can now also search all the fields in the Contacts list. This will be very useful to people who have numerous people on their list to keep tract of. You can now easily find everyone in your address book depending in their “Job” or “Location.

Mail

Receiving a dozen e-mail messages is part of everyday life for some. So, if you suddenly receive an important message, you might not notice it because of the other messages dumped into your folder. Apple added some features that will make this problem smaller.

With the new operating system, you can now make your contacts VIP, like your boss, partner, spouse, or anyone else. So when that VIP sends you a message, it will appear in the VIP folder. It appears in the Inbox too, but with a star next to it for you to know that it’s a VIP message.

You can also put flags on your messages, and they will appear in another folder so that you can keep track of them.

Don’t worry about the memory storage because you will only have one file for each message even if they are in many different folders. They are not copied, but they just show themselves in those folders. So when you change a file in one folder, then it will also change in the rest.

If you do not want your automated signature to appear in some messages you want to send, iOS 6 now allows users to set separate signatures for different e-mails. This will save you time changing them manually.

Maps

Many pundits found the original iPad almost flawless when it was released in 2010. It was regarded as the best tablet PC yet. However, some users found it disappointing when they tried to view some videos online. The iPad 1 could not play videos that ran on Adobe Flash player, which was the major online video player. Another missing feature from the iPad was the function to multitask. It could not run multiple applications at the same time. Some even sold their iPads just to get a laptop, which is, of course, far more efficient. Because of this, users could not look at the iPad more than just a novelty; certainly never a device for serious work.

The second generation of the iPad, which was released in March 2011, Apple developed to be almost similar to a standard computer: It can now multitask. If you want to toggle back and forth between one app to another, you can now do so with the iPad 2 without turning off the app. There are several ways to multitask.

Multitasking can now be done with the iPad because of the iOS 4.2. In this operating system, you just tap the iPad’s Home button twice to see the recently used applications and select the one you want to use now. If the iPad is in portrait mode, meaning the screen is vertical, six app icons are on the Multitask Bar; in landscape (the screen is horizontal), there are six icons in the bar.

You can close an app by removing it from the Multitask bar. You just press down on an app and hold it until it vibrates. Tap the minus sign on the app you want to close.

With the Multitask Bar, you save time and energy. You can copy and paste data from one app to another with the multitasking function. It also lets you go from one app to another without closing the first app, letting you go back to your previous work. Besides, who uses just one app, anyway? With the Multitask Bar, you do not have to sell your iPad to buy a laptop because it is not as good as the latter.

However, there can be a bad side whenever you multitask. Imagine doing all this work at the same time: You are typing an e-mail, while receiving calls, then someone comes in the room and asks you to do this and that. Your head might explode with too many tasks. Maybe it is not really multitasking, since you switch from one task to another.

One disappointment brought to Apple users was that the new iPad did not have the iOS 5 operating system. The If the new iPad has this new OS, then it allows the user to bring up the Multitask Bar by swiping four or five fingers on the screen, which is not available in the new iPad’s OS. You can also swipe left or right to view and switch apps.
