Charrette's Grand day

CAFA , USC TC Cebu City - From my previous post on this matter. the City Mayor did came. Gracing the invitation though with his limited time and [interest]; His presence was highly anticipated by the 5th year architecture students. for months of preparation and sending off numerous invitations alas their office responded despite city obligations and other commitments. finally our efforts were made for conclusion afterall, the first ever urban planning [cebu heritage and pedestrianization proposal were made in this collective] big scale and fully rendered i must say.

The presentation was moving. it moved me almost to tears, yeah :))

The afternoon was quite eventful from a Student's perspective gathering of individuals whom you share same passion and interest demonstrates this feeling of grand and confidence. Personally, i am honored.

and from a Student's perspective still, it was not quite how i imagined it to be. Well, the setting was awkward...The City Government who avoids certain sectors or 'movements' or by that 'topics' that may raise eyebrows were in attendance, a scent of political issues and gaping holes were raised a few times, off topic questions were asked, somebody at the back went all red from another somebody else's death-and-terrifying statements LOL [OK that was an exaggeration] knowing how politicians go around this country. [i should avoid the plural] theirs is the last say. Anyways, you know how it's like when the reality sets in, i was personally moved by the speech of Ma'am Joy Onozawa [an alumna of this School] who did a research and study on heritage conservation of the old Cebu you will sense a tint of discouragement in her voice after years of practice that no matter how amazingly creative and passionate you are to your craft your visions will somehow be limited to share due to few people who sits in office and might not share the same advocacy. The way i understand it - the visions she has and she is pursuing and the students dedication to the project to impress has similarities in some ways. I don't know if the rest of the crowd gets her sudden outburst of emotions and tears. I did and I almost cried myself... gladly she took into consideration the right time to dwell on such was not in front of the students.

and ever i will meet her again over the weekend..i will be very thrilled. questions regarding IPs and conservations are ready to print :))

Baguio Blues

My Sister is currently in Baguio with my Cousin's Family who resides there, She's been highland for a week already and my Grand Mother back in topsy-turvy part of Manila is complaining. Haha. we spoke via YM, she called and e-mailed me photos of her "solo" getaway. [imagine this scenario: She went to Mine's View alone, asked a native to take her photos and smiled like she's with company haha!]

By the way, baguio is home of the best vacation houses in the country, because of its weather many desire to make this summer capital of the Philippines their ultimate destination during the summer solstice. I personally looooooove the Ukay ukay along the famous session road and their cafes that need no mechanical cooling is way to get businesses earn well. I also like how native's of Baguio retain their culture despite the multi-cultural surroundings and community. One of which is having their dead relatives buried at their backyards or veranda. [yayks]

Baguio is the American Architects Burnham [thus, the famous burnham park] and Parsons [Government Architect and Urban Planner] home for their designs and masterpieces in the Philippines [yet, with the American Influence]. Parsons' also behind the Malacanang de Sugbo building along Plaza Independencia and MOGHS school in Cagayan de Oro City, dated during the commonwealth government.

Tribal People

We're heading up to the highlands once again! i never thought i'd end up with IP [Indigenous People] being part of my Architectural Thesis topic, i must say i took the chieftain's commendable comment and turned it as an inspiration "you look like one of our beautiful lumads" however, i don't really know wether i'd be flattered or offended :D you know they see beauty differently :)) kidding aside, since they are one of the most oppressed people in the society today i believe my proposal will be of great help to their community, by bringing revenue and introduce their cultures to the common people without exploiting their beliefs and their vulnerability. [this deserves a separate post]

Anyways, early october before the semester's end we'll be heading up to 3 tribes! i informed friends [actually im tagging along friends] cause i have this sort of goal in mind for next semester's presentation and i'm working my ass to gather information as to date, though i'm thankful for few friends who helped me out it's still different when you're hands on and physically present.

first stop will be the Tiguahoanon tribe in San Fernando Bukidnon, a friend and i were there 2 years ago, it's one experience i never forget, then the Daraghuyan Tribe where you'll find the best soil painters, i forgot which 3rd tribe it will be, but i'm sure it's equally amazing.

I will be with my friend Anya who recently received recognition as one of the Outstanding Young Leaders of Asia, 2 close friends from Grade School [Angj and Aimee], Ma'am Joy Onozawa [founder of Cebu Heritage Conservation Council ~~and Architect of Plantation Bay haha just telling~~], King Angchangco my buddy from NCPF and my good friend Bong Edralin of Freeman and Regidor Vicente of Kampai Group of Comp :))

Retreat

Went for a Retreat with BATCH 2012; I had to join them though i'm not graduating this school year, i went only because i still know a dozen of people or two, unlike if i decide to be with a different batch i might take the said retreat to another level - silent retreat that is! [the kind when you have no one to talk to]

I don't know if fun is the right terminology to use. You know, having a Marian and Jesuit education influence since high school and college respectively - fun is not merely associated with retreats ;) but the kids their age maybe were not soulfully briefed what's the whole purpose of the said event.

for me it's something i am always afraid off. afraid in the sense cause it's one moment when you talk to yourself and listen to the deepest core of your heart...it's also the moment when you get to listen attentively to it...and of course the expected...the moment when you assess yourself.

the group of 81 gathered at around 8:30am at the meeting area [school campus] ohh by the way, this is the only retreat i went to that i only paid 50pesos! LOL everything else is covered by the SVD and the faculty [quite cool! unlike the usual 1k up]

The retreat started with an orientation , reading of house rules, and assigning of rooms ;) this is quite interesting room assignments were intended for all males and all females , my friend [israeli] and i thought it's the usual overnight during plates haha we volunteered to be with the boys LOL LOL! anyhow, we were accommodated by some girl friends at St. Luke ;) neat!!

in every event and occasion FOOD is a huge factor to its success LOL, and it's probably the most anticipated during the event. [i think] and luckily they serve good viands.

i guess the overnight stay at the retreat house was something worth reminiscing ;) i had my moment with Jesus and spoke directly to the Priest about my anxieties...i hope to let go...forgiving may come eventually, for now i really need to live my life ;-( the words of the Priest were divine, i believe my Father was there that moment...i believe Jesus is within me...

Since when did being smart became an issue of being bullied upon and an outcast?

Naning [naningkamot] is the bisaya term for trying hard, in XU-Ateneo when one is branded as trying hard it refers more on the attitude of the person where in the campus society find it gossiping about "trying hard to fit in" , "trying hard to be a social icon" but it does not refer on the approach of a person when he/she is "trying hard to do well in his/her studies", HERE, in USC-TC where the culture is different - Naning makes it sound negative when you do good on something and exert extra effort in plates or whatsoever activity you're in.

Architecture is a broad topic, anything goes underneath this category and may branch out to different related subject and when one tends to obsess in such aspect of Art and Science/Engineering [like what i am generally doing] you will eventually find this post relevant better yet interesting :D

I, like any other, am a fan of iconic buildings that has strongly represented the ideals, when i say ideals i meant of poetry/architecture/design and on some note music. How immensely impeccable. Let's skip on the details of how the "Designer" behind these building lived their lives [to avoid gossip?LOL] and focus on the building as pictured.

who doesn't know of the Falling Water by the World Famous Frank Lloyd Wright? it's probably one of the most photographed houses in the whole world, even the famous hollywood couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were fans of this house [google and see for yourself ;)]

I adore this house - but i find it somehow overrated almost everyone i know "lurrvs' this house, and i'm quite the selfish ;)) just kidding!

The Guggenhiem from Frank Gehry's concept of a crumpled paper comes this interesting design. I wish to make one like this ;-/ I'm still am struggling with my design "prowess" [ohh make that afraid to explore] However, contrary to popular belief the concept of this building wasn't taken from a crumpled paper, according to FG himself it took him almost a 100 models to come up with such idea. It's probably during the Simpsons [yes the cartoons] guest appearance that people started to have the wrong connotation on how the concept came to reality.

The Eiffel Tower which is not a dwelling of sort but a tower that is rather symbolic for the French marking the centennial celebration of the Revolution by Engr. Gustave Eiffel

ONE of my personal love and hoping that one day i'll set foot in this desert and somehow near the Great Pyramids of Egypt ;) Who is not left jaw dropped over this spectacular tomb for the pharaohs in the ancient times? Legend has it that something NOT human was behind the construction of this magnificent structure.

The Colosseum built for entertainment ~~[gladiators kinda entertainment - in modern era its akin to MGM grand hotel in Las Vegas where they held Manny-boxing like that?~~] during the Ancient Roman Empire - one of the most visited remnants of the past and well preserved.

THE Santiago Calatrava's h*ck of a dude. I never thought buildings may look like bridges and bridges can be good buildings ;)) just fooling. i wonder why Architects i spoke about Engineering and Architecture say it's not good to combine both. Isn't these Calatravas not good enough? I say it's when both Aesthetic and Function meet like adults go on a date - they compliment one another ;)

[this is just one sketch from one of his works, since internet connection is slow and anti virus opt for a computer scan my laptop loading is lagged, just google for yourself ! hehe]

The Taj Mahal in Agra , India - What true love can do ;) i can't find any right word to describe this temple the fact that it's built out of love and for love it's the most romantic thing ever built.

University Days

The week Celebration for the University's Foundation was a successful [and sports intramural as well] though, i honestly did not participate nor gave time to watch the games. hehe i really hate to say this but back in Ateneo de Cagayan we celebrate foundation or as it is popularly called Xavier Days more like a fiesta that the entire Cagayan de Oro celebrates with it. No kidding! Like a Carnival there were Ferries Wheel, Booths, All night concerts, Booths and More Booths, Games and Exhibits. :D When i left for Cebu particularly for USC i had expectations and to my dismay they remained so.

Anyways, prior to the event, we [group mates] were up all night doing layouts and renderings for the board/printed presentation ;) [ok, i went home at 3am to take a power nap and came back 6 hours after , my bad hihih]

oh, how we look like the entire night. ;))

The next day, Omar [the group leader] had to print the said board at a nearby cheap printing shop - LOL ok let me rephrase that, at a nearby low profile printing shop ;))

The 5th year students and others in charged were assigned to mount the displays [ i came to zip and zap a few times ahah]

i would like to thank my friends and family [dear ones] with all my heart for the love and generosity to celebrate my day despite life's awkward moments. my dear friends tin and jen whom we consider as relatives too are in grief with the loss of their mother during these days, it was not a holiday and was quite the most awkward time to "celebrate' yet they did. thank you so much for the love!! i'm sure your mom is well taken cared of wherever she is.

I thank God for giving me these people in my life. however, empty it may be , God really knows how to fill up the voids ;) and they're even better than what i don't have!!

Thank you dear Philok for the 6 years and counting. i am not the best but i will be better in time, may you stick around longer though in prayers i say "forever' [if God allows]

Month after the green light on the charrette project. 14 groups all with the creative insights rallied on to their respective assignments [sounds like headline to me LOL]. i wont talk in behalf of the 13 other groups experience but i'm here to share about the plaza independencia complex group updates ;) [ the group where i'm in]

should i go directly to the bad news? no. let's save that for later ;))

in my previous post i flaunted about our group on site visit, taking details and interviewed the very right people to talk with regards to this criteria. my only comment is 'how come everyone's seemingly afraid? [of something or someone]"

well, if there is politics then there must be a big boss. bigger and much powerful than the charette coordinators. LOL. [yes i'm mocking]

anyways, i hope my frustrations wont eventually be more evident in how i write, cause i actually am... apart from the details we had on site during design programming we found our path to Museo Sugbo - a part of National Museum and a former cebu city prison. Yep! but they emptied the quarters and moved them [prisoners] elsewhere they can dance freely [and i meant of wider space]. We would like to give credit to one of the most important persons in this city - of which can not be cloned for his passion and intellect ;) in short nag-iisa. Sir Jojo Bersales [Archaeologist and Museum Supervisor -a curator is rather more appropriate]

moving on, here are some pics we took at the plaza and fort san pedro. you see the complex is composed of the fort san pedro and the malacanang sa sugbo, WE [the group] are in charged of the site development. [more like for the landscape archs]

the best of all is probably the nights when we had the chance to work together and share our minds. apparently, the month we spent at the rented room with air condition and roof deck was a waste - will tell as we go further ;)

something went missing

on the day of the final submission, we were told to re-do our model in fact re-do the entire concept and just retain what is currently seen in site. what does it mean? meaning to say, we have no project proposal just mere papers and shits. aw sheets.

the reason the charrette coordinator can give is just because the mayor [mayor rama] played a huge role in coming up with the design and concept of the existing plaza during its rehabilitation and our proposal might offend him. PERIOD.

so, the 30 days and nights of hard work turned awkward and sour. we needed to start from scratch one again and make another model. of course, it is not our duty to complain but it is our right to ask - at least. we spent money and it was not just money we loss but the sense of empowerment the opportunity to voice out. so what happened in 30 days we tried to make up over a weekend and few hours on weekdays. which happened to have my birthday as casualty ehhe! then again because of the group's hard work which i happen to be of great luck be part of the efforts paid off.

the ESQS project

The ESQS group project assignments for 5th year design 09 were handed to students 2 weeks ago, our initial reaction was a complete disappointment, we expected too much. Apart from the previous years their projects were more interesting compared to ours (having to travel to other city or province is the fun part). However, as we went through the researches , lectures and deliberations it was slowly made to clear and in our better understanding how important this project is not only for Cebuanos but for us Filipinos ;) here is why..

March 16 2021 will mark 500 years since the Portuguese Navigator Magellan came to the soils of Mactan and held the first Catholic Mass (according to our written history though up to the moment it is still in debate whether or not the first mass was held in masaw which is butuan in present day) Anyways, the project in relation to the history is Cebu's goal to showcase the progress of the City since the date. the local government aims on something really huge, funded in billion. YAY.

Our group is task to redevelop the Plaza Independencia along Pigafetta St. in Pier 1, how to turn such place that is seem to distant in time and bring the public's interest to history as well? we will see as the project progresses. Meanwhile here are few pegs our group was able to take note of during our site visit.

The Shrine is dedicated to the Veterans of Cebu and the Country

The Fort San Pedro along Pigafetta Street houses artifacts and articles of the grandeur of Cebu.

This wide pavement does not improve the plaza's aesthetic , just saying

and so are the walkways. can you just imagine when you walk this area at 12noon

the newly planted palm trees don't compliment the decades old acacias (if only the trees could talk)

The heart of the Plaza is this monument which is quite dull

on the other hand: i can not help but remember and laugh at thought on this monument in Cagayan de Oro City (my hometown) , the moment i set my eyes on this gigantic structure i saw all GREEN (if you know what i mean) which gives the emphasis of something different. Is this epic fail? LOL you be the judge.

Sustainable - Yes!

Where are we and what are we doing really while Mother Nature is undergoing quite a turmoil of rapid changes? sitting like a duck?, from Global warming and climate change that has affected our daily lives in all aspect from food production, daily living adjustments and such. Even In construction that may bring about destructive to nature and the latter depending on the structure's functions and contributions. What do we do really? and What can we do? ;-)

We all need to be responsible. becoming one is a duty we are all obliged to perform. Earth is our home and just like the comforts of our own living room as dwellers we maintain and make it as cozy as possible to live in. We can do these duties in small scale yet big enough when we influence others.

In the Local, Talamban Cebu City, news on "green" designed home of the Archival's has made noise for years now, it is designed and constructed by Engr. and Councilor Archival himself whose passion in Construction and Nature preservation is immensely impeccable.

Stumbled upon this book at a local bookstore (my attempt to collect and fill my future home-library began years ago)

This book showcases 500 different houses around the world from a typical house design of a certain society and culture to a modified home design of a specific client or owner. It's a 4 inch thick book with photos and captions as well as name of designers and location of structure.

I was out of town and been trying to download the best application for mobile blogging but none on the lite versions seem to work well, i always get the errors and i'm so not purchasing full versions cause i ain't a serious blogger, just blogging LOL. Which is apparently the reason why i has no recent posts here also internet connection sucks when you're on the road. Nonetheless, had a blast in Bohol for days, the white sand, beautiful beaches and company were superb! (with Sister (on AWOL), Her Best Friend, My BF and Friends) I should really start to learn swimming and start conquering fear!

Weather was great! everyone asked for the sun kissed skin. Basically, that's the wrap up for my summer 2011 (waiting for photos from Nat's Camera) however, i still have 2 pending travels before the start of June (School)- Manila for a Project and GenSan if it's safe to travel or maybe just Bukidnon.

Speaking of School - I'm contemplating of what Thesis topic to tackle for the second semester. I know it's still on the 3rd quarter of the year but it's safer to have decided this early since cramming can not be my last option. I am thinking of an Art Therapy School for Autism or somehow near the said topic, i might need suggestions though i'd be glad to hear from you.

Anyways , to cut this randomness short here are few photos of the beautiful bohol taken from my phone.

Illumination

How do we save the WORLD? and i mean the PLANET. Recycling is the best answer. Just look around you anything on the floor can be made of something worth a million. In my illumination (Utility Subject) part of the requirement was to make a lamp costing 100php (2USD) out of old/recycled materials. So, the main purpose it to support environmental awareness and campaign information dissemination to completely eliminate the use of incandescent bulbs in every household as it is said to be harmful to the environment... This is what i came up with...

Incandescent bulbs are harmful to the environment cause It produces unwanted amount of carbon dioxide during its production and emits high mercury level thus can cost you more in energy consumption. Not your best pal for saving money. no no.

Let the glass glue dry

Connect wires and place CFL in the middle that will serve as your source of light

It may create an aurora borealis effect when you use colored bulbs

Nothing much but my simple contribution to the environment. Take note: your local power/electric company are collecting bulbs in exchange for LED or CFLs, so you may go find your nearest electric company and negotiate. (incandescent bulbs are no longer sold in big markets and hardware in support of the campaign)

Thank You Lord, I'm so FULL. I haven't eaten rice for 2 days I'm bread here and there. I guess i live by the saying all in the name of passion and being BROKE. LOL. Before i transferred to This City my Friends would advice me to "Be Careful" in such a manner that i had to read between the words what they're meaning to say, Actually, they meant something else. But i came to Cebu not for those purpose but to re-live my forgotten self and claim my future. So, here i am... with my undying passion as my backbone and a supposedly support from a long-lost-mother-now-found-and-lost-again (kinda story) to wrap up the entire saga short, I AM ON MY OWN. I honestly don't know what to do...i am reliable to myself but i feel like that child who lost something or someone somewhere along the way and not being well aware of it...suck it! anyways, i guess this is the life God has intended for me to deal...i just need to figure out things the soonest. On star studded nights i bring my cup of coffee by the terrace and talk to the stars. Silently Praying...One day.

Green Architecture

During my Design 08 Final Project we were tasked to come up with a Residential House with 3 Bedrooms for a Middle class family of our chosen Client. We were introduced to someone (which i wont be elaborating much about the client's personal background thus just the "someone") and with all sweat , literally blood and tears we drew that someone's mind. We figured the Client's needs and as required by the Professors applied the necessities of Green Living. What is Green Living or Green Architecture?

If you Google, you will get various definition of what Green Architecture is, but i'll spare you the information overload here. Green Architecture is simply proper planning. Apart from the applications itself basically on : rainwater catchment system, passive cooling, grey water filtering applications and so. Proper orientation of the building plan itself is one step to Green Architecture, even segregation of wastes from biodegradable to toxic and non-biodegradable is already defining the purpose of Green Architecture.

It was a one month of hard work. and i mean really hard work. Sleepless nights and just noodles to dig in wasn't a joke.
