So funny.

I just remembered (see the post below) why I came to look at my neglected blog - to find a Banana Bread recipe to take to my aforementioned dear friend in palliative care (recuperating at the moment) tomorrow.

She needs to get her potassium levels up. Who doesn't love Banana bread ! Her oncologist told her to eat 2 bananas a day.

It only took me 5 mins.

Old recipes are delicious and fail safe.

Now, can you believe - August 4th 2009 I posted this recipe and August 4th 2021 I'll bake it ...now that is super freaky.

Can you believe my blog is still at top of Google ...well in name only.

Or maybe I'm just a winner in my own lane.

I'm still hanging around bloggers and social media influencers.

I count many as dear friends and dear online acquaintances. I hope you are well.

Why am I here ?

Not sure am I , of anything . BUT I can tell you about #steppinguptobreastcancer.

This year I've already lost three real-life friends to METASTIC Breast Cancer - I know of many others - every day a few Facebook groups makes an announcement that someone has grown their wings.

Another dear friend had a close call in last 2-3 weeks but she is slowly coming back stronger. No-one knows, but she believes she has a year.

A week in the base hospital and then 2-3 weeks or so in palliative care ward has seen her grow stronger again. I hope for her sake she is right. Hope is a powerful thing.

I've watched many of my friends endure chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hair loss, and synthetic wigs on first diagnosis ... and then again, and again.

During my own treatment, I leant on many for strength and hope, just as much as they've leant on me.

Many survivors get to 5yrs or beyond. Then the 'beast' or "bitch" that is metastatic cancer, returns - then treatment never ends - till the end.

They stay in living limbo, 'palliative care' while there is so much to live for.
Trying everything to beat the disease or at the very least buy more time. Time to love and make memories with their tween and teenage children, a husband and their extended families.

Too many women are dying, far too young from Metastatic - aka Terminal aka stage 4 aka Advanced Breast cancer. It is not the curable disease many think it is.

Lately, I have been struggling with the reality of what BC did to them and is doing to them.

I know the money raised for National Breast Cancer Foundation will support research to ease the suffering of metastatic ( and even other cancer treatments) and also bring hope for a cure.

I'm committing to 10,000 steps a day for August. If I can raise awareness and a few $

In this time of Covid money is tight and I don't expect that everyone can donate, or even spare a few coins.

Ongoing research is the only way we can improve our understanding of how breast cancer originates, grows and spreads, in order to develop tests, treatments and interventions to improve outcomes for people with the disease.

Travelling with Kids without going crazy

Having travelled with our twin boys in America , on Aussie road and caravan trips many times - including 10 weeks across the Nullabor to Western Australia - these tips are gold from travel guru Sheree Everitt

I'm happy to share her tips for success and happiness ...

On one hand, taking your kids on holiday can mean opening their eyes to new places and experiences and sharing their surprise and joy. On the other, it can mean putting up with fights in the car, whinges about changed meals or routines, missed school and the dreaded ‘are we there yet?’.

Having traversed all corners of the globe with her husband Spida Everitt and children Boston, 12, and Anais, 16, for her hit TV show Great Australian Doorstep, Sheree Everitt is an expert at making the holiday a positive one.

“Children are never too young to take on an adventure, says Sheree. “My son Boston was 17 months old when we left for our very first eight month journey around Australia,” she says. “Sure, we had no idea what we were doing. I had never been in a motorhome or caravan before either and we took enough gear for a small country.

“That first trip we took 5 kids – 17 months, 7years, 9years, 14 years old, and, we also through another 14year old nephew in for good measure - because four kids just wasn’t enough of a migraine for me.” According to Sheree, the trip was a huge success and it inspired a desire to share her love of travelling with her kids wherever possible.

However, as anyone with kids will tell you, travelling with kids is not always easy, but with a few insider tips, you can be prepared for the challenges and spend less time arguing, and more time enjoying.

“Most kids are really resilient,” Sheree says. “And they adapt in just a few days. Mothers on the other hand, take a little longer.”

What are some of your favourite destinations to take kids?

“Anywhere in Australia. The beach, the lake, a river, the mountains, the sunshine, the snow. Australia has it all. We are all so very lucky to live in a country that is ridiculously easy to get around, with no borders to cross and it’s all at your fingertips. Just step outside your front door and you will find an incredible spot. If you haven’t travelled with kids before, start off small with a weekend away or overnight stay.”

What are some of the rewards of travelling for kids?

“Getting them out into the community is priceless. Getting them to meet other children from all walks of life. The kids are seeing and experiencing life in its rawest form. And seeing so much nature, so many vistas and views and learning so very much about Australia. It really is a priceless experience.

The kids also learn so many more life skills and daily chores that they definitely wouldn’t back at home. “And for the family, spending so much quality time together and learning to live together and co-exist in a whole new environment and on a totally different schedule is such a rewarding and bonding experience. Your usual 9 to 5 routine just goes out the window, which is particularly awesome for fathers who often miss out on so many things in their children’s day to day lives.”

Is there anything you look for in a location specifically when you are travelling with kids?

“As long as there is a beach or an area they can run around in, then they are fine. Whether it’s the snow, the water, the outback, the mountains, there will always be something for kids to do – just use your imagination. And if nerves are wearing a bit thin, look for a great caravan park with lots of kids entertainment!”

What about schoolwork, what do you advise to do there?

“If you are away from school for prolonged periods, you will need to speak to your child’s teachers and take some work with you. In my experience, when the kids were doing schoolwork on the road, they got through it so much faster than they would have at school. I found that the school work is not a big challenge.”

How do you ensure everyone gets a bit of ‘me’ time and doesn’t drive each other nuts?

“We have a loose schedule. We have ‘quiet time’ and ‘mummy time’… there’s also ‘daddy time’ but that is normally away from the family at the pub. Isn’t it funny how men always seem to find the closest pub so easily? We have set times of day for ‘quiet time’. It depends on what we have done or what we have coming up in the next few days. But we always do ‘quiet time’ at least four or five times a week when on a long journeys.”

Do the kids have specific jobs on the road?

“Absolutely. We make a big list at the start and they each choose three jobs. Then at the end of each week we swap jobs, but the other person has to agree to swap. It’s a good lesson in negotiating and the best part is that the worst jobs are constantly enjoyed because they know if they whinge then no one will want to take the job at the end of the week.”

Are there any places, or types of place you wouldn’t go with children?

“Not really. Maybe Kings Cross*, but other than that no. As long as you do your research and have all your safety measures covered, then you can go anywhere you want.”

What do your kids say about travelling?

“They love it! We have taken our kids to Disneyland a number of times, and yet it never gets talked about. What they do talk about is the time we stayed on Marillana a very remote outback station in the Pilbara. They talk about the time we got stuck on our way to Cape York… the doll collection in the scary house in Rainbow, Victoria…the time they had to clean the dishes in the river in the Kimberley.”

(Well my kids can't wait to return to Disneyland ...)

Sheree’s tips for travelling with kids

Keep a routine with their school work. 90 mins a day and have it at the exact same time each day.
Wake them at the same time, feed them at the same time, everything needs a time. Kids love routine. When there is no routine there is no formation.
When you are on big travelling days, pack their lunch and morning tea just like when they are at school. Make sure they have healthy food and not petrol station snacks. Lots of fruit and vegies!
They need their sleep so ensure they go to bed on time.
Make sure they have chores to do. It teaches so many great lessons
Brush up on some games to distract them on long tips, preferably some learning ones, but Eye Spy is always a good fall-back.

Can you touch type ?
Not me , not really.

I'm more of two-three hunt and finger pecker.

This is my grandfather's first typewriter.
I remember being given this at 21 years old. Not so much to use but keep.

I own it and it still works.

I'm quite fast as a finger pecker.
However - I've been inspired to give touch typing a go for 30 days or longer.

Brain training and all that.

After 3 days of 30 mins or more, I can feel and see a basic improvement.

Pathetically slow but mostly accurate.

They recommend that. Master accuracy before speed.

This is the program I'm using. It breaks it down simply and keeps a record of my progress. Sam tells me he has an account from school , but he wasn't using it properly when I checked him.

After I master the skill - it will be the task of the twins to learn over the school holidays in preparation for Yr7.

Yeah I know, like weren't they just starting school the other day. I remember the excitement and anticipation.

It starts again ... orientation letter arrived today 27th November.

Hello, it's been a while.

I've had busy six-seven months.
Squeezing in a six-week overseas holiday that I didn't even blog about.
Almost, four weeks in USA and then 2 weeks in Italy.
Working and parenthood, it's not easy.

Attending new courses for volunteering and advocacy with the Cancer Council and Encore training.

Florence, Italy was for 2018 IBCPC PARTICIPATORY DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL - a sporting event and above all a social occasion which welcomed 4,000 to 5,000 people from all over the world. Mostly women, breast cancer survivors participants in Dragon Boat races, paddling together on the Arno. Many accompanied by their friends and family, their faithful and enthusiastic supporters.

Another bunch of stories for another day.

Due to my flight arrangements, I was traveling onto Italy and they home, I was not booked a seat near my hubby and sons.

At all, unless I changed seats. I did once or twice.
A win against the whining ...
I didn't have anyone to talk to (or fights to referee)

So I had about 10 flights, many long hauls. The opportunity to watch many movies, uninterrupted.
New release movies, so many hours to pass and I have never watched so many in my life.
I missed a few film endings. Some I caught again.

'Tully' was one of the ones I was enjoying when the pilot shut down the in-flight entertainment for announcements and getting ready to land.

Now, I was totally hooked on Tully and had yet to reach, what I know now is the "big twist".

Tully, is a film about motherhood or parenthood. Part comedy, charming with the focus on fine-tuning motherhood or not ...

I knew nothing of what was to come.

When I was asked if I wanted to review Tully - of course, I said, 'I missed the ending .'

I didn't get to follow it up because I've also been away 4-5 weekends since I returned in mid-July.

Writing a few thoughts about a film like Tully, the crux being a significant plot twist which calls into question the events leading up to it and the entire movie was a challenge.

How do I describe Tully, only summarizing 'her' plot and not reveal anything?
Of its climax!

'Marlo (Charlize Theron), a mother of two - heavily pregnant with #3 is gifted a night nanny by her brother (Mark Duplass). Hesitant to accept the extravagance, she comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny, Tully (Mackenzie Davis).'

We all know the palpable truths about new motherhood that are unassailable. The bone-deep exhaustion, the breastfeeding, the pumping anxiety, the mess, the never-ending struggle to find a 'balance' and still sparkle. ie. make the class cupcakes.

In comes Tully, a free-spirited 20 something to rescue Marlo and baby Mia, a friend in a time of need. Drew, the clueless husband exists in the background, playing video games with his headphones, and simply heedless.

I could really identify with all the deep themes of postpartum motherhood and the twist well ...you'll find out for yourself. It's unique and quirky. It's funny, fantasy and it's the truth.

I can say at the end of the movie, Drew has his own awakening - actual 'co-parenting' with Mia's care and sharing Marlo’s earbuds while helping her cook dinner.

Happy 28th Anniversary

Marriage is a lot like riding a bike ...

You have to invest lots of energy to keep going .

Look after each other; a well oiled and maintained bike will ride more smoothly and change gear easily

Explore, enjoy new adventures and appreciate the old routes.

Don’t just be fair weather riders , brave the rain and storms, for sunshine and rainbows will follow if you hang in there

Endure the obstacles and mountains , the hill climb may be long and you won’t always see what is ahead . Ride together with passion, love and forgiveness to reap the rewards of the downhills!

Keep pedalling down the road of life to reach the destination together - same goals -remember you are on the same team.

If you make it to end of the trail and have survived the bumps and flat tyres - fist pump !

I did not write this just a friend posted it to Facebook yesterday and I thought it was worth copying and passing on....it's very true and the timing is perfect.

For some people so eager to call it quits and throw in the towel on your relationships because everything isn’t “perfect”...here is some food for thought.

Lifelong commitment is not what most people think it is. It's not waking up every morning to make breakfast and eat together. It's not cuddling in bed until both of you fall asleep, peacefully, at night. It's not a clean home filled with laughter and lovemaking, everyday.

It's someone who steals all the covers. It's slammed doors and a few harsh words, at times. It’s stubbornly disagreeing and giving each other the silent treatment until your hearts heal...and, then...forgiveness!

It's coming home to the same person, everyday, that you know loves and cares about you in spite of (and because of) who you are. It's laughing about the one time you accidentally did something stupid.

It's about dirty laundry and unmade beds WITHOUT finger pointing. It's about helping each other with the hard work of life! It's about swallowing the nagging words instead of saying them out loud.

It's about eating the easiest meal you can make and sitting down together at 10 p.m. to eat because you both had a crazy day.

It's when you have an emotional breakdown and your Love lays with you and holds you and tells you everything is going to be okay...and you BELIEVE them. It's about still loving someone even though, sometimes, they make you absolutely insane.

Living with the person you love is not perfect...sometimes it's hard; but it's amazing and comforting and one of the BEST things you'll ever experience.

Go ahead and share a picture of the person you love and copy and paste this as your status. Make their day...and yours! ❤️️

Then there is always Therapy to help if you are struggling !!!

PS My sincere thoughts go to those both who wish to experience ‘this’ and for those whom their marriage / relationship had their own reasons for ending. Namaste 🙏

I saw someone on my Facebook feed sharing Yoga with Adriene.

So I started with 1 of the 30 days of TRUE and I was hooked .

I've attended a few Yoga classes at the gym in the past and I'm still a beginner .
Extending myself is a new journey.

Having just finished Day 8 of daily Yoga with Adriene, at home, I am so grateful I found her channel. I can't wait for each daily email.

Adriene is a great teacher , easy going and natural. Complete with her dog, Benjy - a Blue Cattle (Blue Heeler) she is entertaining and light.

It's never to late to begin! It's free and anyone can join in on the action!

Daily practice makes progress ! I look forward to more progress, strength and
stretch. I hope I can keep the journey going .

So this memory popped up today.

It seems so long ago.

Five years ago - my goal was not to die.
Not that I had any control .

I had choices to stay as 'well' as I could and so far it's working. I work at it.

Funny that I enjoy her music and love her name. There are not many famous women named Trisha !

I have travelled so far since then.
Plans ? I have a few ongoing and yet I never tick everything off my list.

I'm better at one year plan. I can't even ...

five years ?

I'd be better trying to keep it simple.

Not everyone is blessed with more years - this also reminded me today how fragile life is . Take a moment to read Holly's final words. She passed away last week @27 yrs from a rare cancer called Sarcoma. I had a different Sarcoma too.

A few weeks ago , a facebook post offered the chance to be a brand Warrior for Gear up Girl.

So I applied.

If you have been following along with my latest passion - cycling - adventures . The biggest being 700km (of 1000km) charity ride the first week of October for TourDe Oroc . Then a 56km day ride to finish with Zoo 2 Zoo, and riding a bike leg in my first Triathlon - it's being EPIC.

I'd rather sit on my butt all day

I lot of people said I was crazy.
Well padded lycra pants and hundreds of kilometres of road would not deter .
The urge to cycle ~~1000kms~~ 658kms in six days through Outback NSW !

The journey began in Mudgee, out to Dunedoo and Gilgandra; up to Coonamble and then Walgett; across to Brewarrina ; Bourke; before heading back down to Nyngan; before the final day saw the peloton cycle through Trangie, Narromine and back to Dubbo.

After Cancer (twice) I have learned to dig deep and take chances, the hell with everything.

Be strong, be fearless, be prepared to step out of your comfort zone. Then believe that anything is possible when you have the right people there to support you.

I knew I wouldn't manage the whole 1000kms or so , but I did the best I could with 5 weeks training.

It was a fully supported ride , with three backup vehicles (thanks Toyota) ; Lead and Tail safety warning cars who travelled at snail pace (for a car 25-35kms per hour) . All accommodation and meals were covered. So much food. Country town hospitality was fabulous with many lunches and home cooked dinners provided or meals in the local pub.

Only night we had to camp out in the Showground and our local Police brought out the Swags on a 4hr drive

After a long day's ride only.

Rest breaks were every 33kms or so and anywhere.

Despite a few bruises, chaffing and scrapes I enjoyed it beyond measure. I was counting every cm km and my Garmin was always on ! Unless I forgot to re- start it !!

Anticipating a pace of 25km per hour - I soon learned it was actually more like 28-32kms per hour and even up to 34.9kms on the flats .The first day had so many hills. Other riders helped me up hills with a hand on my back. Sometimes two of them at once.I was one of four women, the only one who needed a push.

Then it was 'flat out' till day 6. The roadkill ~~stench~~ was awful .

I won an award (T-shirt) for my OFF ROAD pursuits ...taking a detour down an embankment - and had lots of 'colours' to show for it.

Starting as a very inexperienced rider with little group riding experience - the #peloton saved my @$$. When I needed a break - I kept the Leading or Tail vehicles' driver company for a spell each day.

Yesterday, I was so glad to arrive HOME - riding 144kms exactly of 166kms for Tour De Oroc. day 6 Nyngan to Dubbo.

It was my biggest physical challenge ever and I'm very grateful for the OROC team who gave me so much encouragement and support. They knew my limitations and helped me get across the line.
A doctor, nurse, solicitors, accountants, RFDS pilot, farmer, former Mayor, Bank manager and several others were in the peloton aged 29yrs to maybe 70+.

The cause was Macquarie Home Stay - $115,000 was raised.

Macquarie Home Stay is your home away from home when you need to come to Dubbo to seek medical treatment at Dubbo Hospital. Established by a group of community members who saw the need for low cost but not low quality, affordable accommodation to be provided, it ensures the cost of accommodation is not a hindrance to seeking treatment when you have to attend Dubbo Hospital.

Day 6 was my longest ride ever on a bike 144kms. Matthew Keenan Sports commentator and cyclist joined us for Day 6 . Matt regularly forms part of the international commentary team at the Tour de France being broadcast around the world and multiple other functions. He gave a great motivational speech Night - Day 5.

It was all over like that. Not, just the beginning.
Home sweet home.
Pizza was inhaled , then a splash of wine while soaking in a long a radox bath.

100% doing it again

The Great Cycle Challenge going through October was also on my list to ride for Children's Cancer research.

I REALLY wanted to get back on the bike today - except for the much needed rain. I would be.
Outback NSW was bone dry. The rain is a blessing.

I'm currently ranked 5th for number of kilometres ridden in NSW - though my fellow 14-15 Orocers certainly TOP the entire list.

By the way - I need $120 to reach my goal. Everything counts and $5 fiver is perfect.

Honestly, it was a privilege to ride with my fellow Orocers on the 3rd epic Tour De Oroc ride.

The way everyone looked after each other (especially me) was fantastic and the support crew did such an amazing job.

Lately, I was having issues trying to run a bit faster at parkrun - just a little leaking … especially when I ran on the treadmill .
It made me want to cry too.

Even just coughing, sneezing, jumping at the gym and laughing (once it ended badly when my husband and two boys and all our suitcases toppled at the bottom of the escalator). Lucky it was a short shuffle to the ladies with my suitcase.

Was it my age, multiple birth pregnancy or hormones or stress incontinence or ALL of the above ?
Chemo put me in early menopause at 46 and I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago.

The trampoline ? well it’s been as issue since the twins had their first bounce … on my bladder.

They got their trampoline at 22 months and I’ve never had a dry jump.

I wasn’t sure about doing Pelvic floor aka Kegel's exercises correctly. I didn’t get it. I had been putting off seeing a professional about my incontinence for months – since I saw a sign in the gym.

Surreptitiously, I kept noticing I wasn’t alone, just glancing in trolleys at the supermarket and a few comments in groups.

Incontinence is more common than we think, affecting 1 in 3 women (of all ages) - a little bit of wee will escape and we feel mortified.

So in early August I made an appointment. After seeing a women's physio I now feel more confident about addressing my issues in the correct way. Every day.

I actually 'knew' the women’s physio recommended to me by a lady from our running group. She was a mum from our Church – awkward - but no topic seems to be taboo anymore after cancer ,nor baring my all to all and sundry when I had infertility treatment.

The appointment started with questions about my births (stillbirth and twins), toileting habits, sex-life, urgency (like when I put the key in the door) and the frequency of incontinence itself.

The internal examination followed –consisting of the physio looking at the opening of my vagina, me practising pelvic floor exercises (pathetically) around her fingers, her feeling the walls of my vagina and a silicon probe attached to a device that measured strength.

All of which I’d experienced before during pap smears, IVF fertility treatment, pregnancy – nowhere near as unpleasant as a pap though.

Basically, because I’ve been slack, I have a weak pelvic floor and a bit of scarring which I wasn’t aware of from the hysterectomy.

The solution is to build up the strength in my 'muscles' with consistent pelvic floor exercises … lots of controlled contractions and releases . Your glutes should not be doing all the work.

It’s a work in progress and will take 3-6 months. A had a followup appopintment (with some improvement) 2 weeks ago.

My next appointment is in December.

Have you heard about the hilarious The Game Of Things , one person reads a topic card and those playing along write down their responses.

It can be first thing that comes to mind, there's no right or wrong answer.

The funnier the better. Trying to keep the answers out of the gutter is challenging when playing with 11 year old boys.

Once written , the responses are read aloud and you have to figure out who said what. Too easy with our family of four but when our friend K played it added an extra element.

You won't believe the THINGS...

We did have the ban the FART , BALLS and POO words - and have a limit on the use of inappropriate words.

The more creative and funnier , the louder we laughed.

I first saw my friend J post about the game on her Facebook page - she is parenting four boys aged 9 -11 ish.

This answer was hilarious .

What I loved most was how easy it was to get kids off their screens ! Two nights in a row ! Plus the belly aching laughter we shared.

The boys have their eyes on more games from Talkin’ Toys.

No, I am feeling more than broken. In July my friend was diagnosed with Metastatic breast cancer. She's a mother of 2 children 6 & 9 , photographer, and wife. It is at present incurable or terminal for want of a word we all hate to hear.

She has hopes but we all have to die at some time , some sooner and this is not something she plans to dwell on.

Did you know that some Cancer patients in Australia can be forced to pay $10,000 month for life saving drugs not listed on PBS.

She was recommended a new targeted drug that she can get on compassionate grounds, direct from the pharmaceutical company that makes it (as it is not a PBS listed drug).

It's been a long time between posts. Life is very busy.

When I look in the mirror I sometimes don't recognise the face staring back at me .
Looking - my life , my eyes wide open , I see how incredibly wonderful it is. I have very high anxiety due to cancers but I manage.

Yes , I get very scared at times but I have learned how to worry less. I pray, I love, I laugh and when the scary creeps in ...

Breath by breath, day at a time. Till my next followup appointment in 7 days.

I've been doing an immense amount of reading about building yourself up and moving forward , not dwelling on the negative; about taking chances and using my cancer diagnosis to build a better life for myself and help other people.

I still struggle with my self-image and looking in mirror definitely brings me down. Not to mention bed hair or hat hair.

I always feel extremely humbled by the the generosity of not only my family, friends and blogging colleagues but complete strangers who are so willing to give in my name for the research into Cancer and NF.

I am participating in Mega Hero March to raise $$$ to continue to research 'cures' and support those afflicted by NF. Especially for our son Sam.

NO really it's all about the CAPE !

Neurofibromatosis can be a devastating condition. It has no cure. I have NF, as does my son. We are not the only ones in our extended family with this condition.

NF is a genetic condition which causes tumours to form on the nerves anywhere in the body at anytime.

Living with a very visible difference can be challenge. You can’t always hide it. Among other things learning issues, disfiguring tumours and extreme nerve pain can also be problematic for those with the condition.

Because NF causes benign tumours to grow anywhere in the body -sometimes they turn malignant and I had a rare malignant (cancer) sarcoma in 2014 and a few benign tumours removed.

On the whole my NF is quite mild in comparison (others in my family have been much more affected) except for the very rare malignant tumour.The Children's Tumour Foundation helps all of us lead better lives.

This is in 2 weeks , the City to surf for the Cancer Council is in 4 weeks. So more on that later.

Now my daily step goal is 12,000 steps !

Must stop sabotaging myself !

Can you believe two choc hot cross buns (not even hot nor toasted) when I got home from shopping and a sausage sandwich,1/2 can coke from Bunnings before that !

I was volunteering at the time for the Scouts. I hardly ever drink Coke.

My goals this week are

Eat healthy for the ~~day~~ week rather than just till lunch time.
Make time to get out for a couple of early morning runs again - including a fabulous opportunity to train with Jane Fardell in our local women's running group.
Stretch
My ongoing 30 burpees a day
Cycling three times (including the She Rides session Monday)
~~Finish~~ Get started at least ... all our 2016 tax returns (two personal /farm and our Business)
Book a Cruise
Circumstances conspired with my son having an eye injury and being off school almost 3 weeks - so I missed my usual group gym classes. No more excuses, back to it this week.
No Facebook after 9pm
In bed by 10pm (with reading time)

Update : Day 2/30 = 60 Burpees in the tank (very slow and with rest breaks)

I'm putting it out here , or there , whatever.
It's not an April Fool's joke.
Adding a few new routine to my arsenal of weapons to fat blast and improve my strength.
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts.

30 Burpees a day for 30 days.

Plus those other flab four exercises as I see Fit.
Pun intended.
It will take me a few ~~weeks~~ days to complete 3 sets of 10 Burpees with only a 1 min break or do as many as I can in 1 min.

Inspired by this story in Runner's World about 30 Burpees a day for 15 days I knew I'd need longer.
No matter - I have to start somewhere.

Dragon boat paddling goes from 3 x a week back to Sunday only as daylight savings ends.

Loving my new bike, it's been a long time since Australian Bicentennial bike ride.

I started a She Rides bike confidence course 2 weeks ago , so bike riding is a new - old thing. The course goes for 8 weeks or so . I already knew a few other participants. Hopefully, we'll be able to get together for riding adventures.

I'm a huge fan of Audio books by Audible .
I especially love listening to Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon . I'm up to Book 5 , each book is over 40hrs.

Everyday I walk , listening to pass the miles. I listen while I iron (not so often) and even while cooking. I love the Scottish accents as well .

When I was asked to share my experience and introduce my boys to the love of being read to by someone other than me - I jumped at the opportunity.

Books being read aloud can help develop better listening skills and help children learn punctuation, enunciation, and emphasis.

We have so far listened to BFG , The Jungle Book and Harry Potter has just started.

Being Cub Scouts they loved the Jungle Book and it's cheeky characters - who their leaders base their names upon. The Jungle Book came to be used as a motivational book by the Cub Scouts movement many years ago.

The animal characters having human characteristics to give moral lessons. The "man-cub" Mowgli, who was raised in the jungle by wolves is a the main character having many adventures and lots of mayhem.

Who doesn't love BFG - (Big Friendly Giant) ... In The BFG, Sophie (a young orphan in orphanage) meets the BFG one night when she can't sleep. BFG takes her back to his cave, where Sophie meets nine other giants, all of whom eat humans. Sophie and the BFG plot to stop the giants - so they go to the Queen of England, who traps the giants in a pit.

Audio books are great way for young learners to listen to curriculum content together as a family and talk about favourite chapters.

So many classics and new favourites. So little time for reading aloud.The boys and I enjoyed these brilliantly read books, with a greater range of voices and expression than I can muster. Reading is at a very good pace and you just want to hear more! (Audible does me a choice to speed it up)

It's been useful to wind them down before they go to sleep especially when their eyes are tired after a long day of school and mum is losing her voice or patience.

Twinion 2 - said he likes Audio books because he hates reading in the car but long road trips can be monotonous.

Twinion 1 - loves the dramatic voices and wants to move onto '57 chapter' books.

Many children understand language above their reading age , through listening they learn new words and advanced constructs when listening to a familiar story.

I learnt quite a few new words myself.

Anne of Green Gables is my next choice , not sure the boys will join me though...

Who knew there about a little known feature in iOS 10 (iPhones) called Magnifier ?

I'm know I've seen it but never used it till today.

I always have a magnifying glass handy now.

I wear contact lens as I'm long sighted , but I need reading glasses to see small print when I wear my contacts.

My husband won't lend me his reading glasses (I lost his spare pair on the plane to China)

When shopping I struggle to read the fine print especially on labels.

Magnifier turns your iPhone’s camera into a virtual magnifying glass with a custom UI for easier reading.

Not hidden, but buried in Accessibility settings, especially since the feature was designed for those with vision impairment.

Breakfast Waffles

or break the rules and eat them when you like.

Browsing through Instagram this morning, on an empty stomach, my feed was full of yummy breakfasts. I didn't have much time to make something.

Twinion 2 has a Mud Run to complete today and later a Cub Campfire night so he was off helping his Dad collect firewood.

I whipped these up in 5 mins with Twinion 1 helping

(Sadly, he is missing the Kids' Mud Run due to an a Blunt eye injury 3 weeks ago and he can't take any chances or risk permanent vision impairment in his good eye - to his advantage he used the excuse to get out of gathering firewood and he missed almost 3 weeks of school)

150g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp caster sugar (I used 2 of cinnamon sugar)
1 free-range egg
1 cup milk
vanilla extract or vanilla bean ground (optional)

Method

Turn on Waffle machine
Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl.
Beat in the egg gradually, then slowly add the milk whisking to get as smooth a batter as you can. Adjust with a little more milk if too thick to ladle/pour.
Once it’s hot, ladle in batter mixture to suit machine size, following your machine instructions until your waffles are cooked to your preference – medium to dark is best - (mine has a green light when it’s ready and hasn’t failed me yet) – carefully open because it can separate into halves.
Top with your favourite breakfast topping combos – omit Cinnamon sugar/ground vanilla if having savoury breakfast combos.

I didn’t need to use any butter or oil or spray to grease – depends on your waffle machine..

PS: I never said I was a food blogger and I had like 30secs to take a photo.

RATING : Super easy - my 10yr and I - took 5 mins tops (with him helping lol) to mix and create first waffle.

Pancake Day

Tomorrow is Pancake Day - aka Shrove-Tuesday.

Of course I made pancakes this morning, not knowing ...so I'll do it all again tomorrow.

Our regular no fail light, fluffy and tender version with choc chips is the choice of the day. I like mine with caramelised banana.

1 1/2 cups milk
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 tablespoons caster sugar

1 large egg
30g approx (1 1/2 tablespoons) butter (melted)

Into a medium jug place milk, lemon juice and sugar.Combine, and set aside for five minutes. It may develop a slightly curdled appearance.
Whisk self-raising flour and bicarbonate of soda together in a large bowl.
Melt the butter ; add egg and melted butter to the milk mixture. Whisk the mixture until the egg has mixed with the milk (the butter will sit on the surface).
Combine the milk mixture with the flour mixture and whisk until almost smooth: the batter should still have a few small lumps. Don't over-mix the batter or the pancakes will be tough.
Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat.
While the pan is preheating , leave batter to stand at least two minutes. It will thicken (and depending on your preference you may prefer to add more milk a tablespoon at a time.
Lightly grease your pan with butter if you prefer, I melt my butter in the same fry pan so I skip this. The melted butter through the mixture in a non-stick pan means I don't add any butter.
After resting the batter, give it a light stir and pour back into the jug.
Pour or spread the batter out to form an 10cm circles or shapes of your choice.
Repeat to make another one or more pancakes, depending on the size of your frying pan. Adjust the heat as necessary as once heated I turn mine down a notch.
I add choc chips or blueberries or cinnamon swirl to batter as side 1 starts to cook. Then I flip (wait until you see air bubbles forming - this tells you it's time to flip it)
I stack mine 3 high...two is not enough.
The kids prefer to decorate and eat singly.

TIP - Put the mixture in a sauce bottle with large hole - the kids can make their own shaped or creative pancakes
