Fresh Malunggay Juice

I’ve heard one of these before. I just didn’t think it’s already available in the market.

Just recently, I came to purchase a product called Fresh Malunggay Juice. I bought it out of curiosity since malunggay, though a very popular vegetable in the Philippines, isn’t commonly processed for beverage manufacturing.

To give you some background, malunggay (scientific name Moringa oleifera) is a leafy vegetable which commonly grows in the tropics. It is popular among Filipinos as a chief ingredient for various soups and an herbal medicine for the treatment of wounds.

Fresh Malunggay Juice, as marketed, is a food supplement that is rich in antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and amino acids. A 130-ml bottle of this product is equivalent to 7-gram malunggay leaves or a bowl of malunggay soup. That’s quite a healthy intake already!

The juice produces a slightly weird smell upon opening it, but it would fade out seconds after. As to taste, well…it’s sweet and malunggay-ish. Lemon flavoring is added to make it more tolerable and tastebuds-friendly. So, cheers!

And by the way, I’ve just learned from this product’s info that malunggay is also known as a miracle vegetable. Cool! Now get a bottle of it ‘cause there can be miracles when you try to taste it. Ha!

Naga’s Pride: Siomai

If you get to visit the City of Naga in Cebu province, don’t you dare leave without tasting the city’s most celebrated foodstuff: siomai.

Siomai is actually the localized version of a Chinese food known in Japan as shūmai. The city of Naga, on the other hand, is not the first place to promote siomai on a large scale. Tisa, a village in Cebu City wherein a famous siomai entrepreneur once lived, was considered as the place where the siomai craze initially kicked off.

To indulge yourself in this meaty dumpling, just go to the Naga’s seaside plaza and look for stores offering it. Two of the most renowned siomai stores there are JB Siomai and Flor’s Siomai which, are adjacently situated just at the entrance of the plaza.

Siomai with Hot Sauce

Siomai is best dipped in its special hot sauce. The hot sauce is made of certain spices, which I’m still about to find out (LOL!). This is then mixed with soy sauce and calamansi extract to further enhance the flavor.

“Puso”

A typical siomai customer would not eat siomai without pairing it with rice. And speaking of rice for siomai, that which you see in the picture is the usual “rice” being offered. Translated in English as “diamond rice” or “hanging rice”, puso is more or less, a cooked plain rice wrapped in woven coconut leaves. It is typically seen hanged in a bunch in food stalls, and is opened by slicing it in the middle with a knife or small blade.

By the way, siomai and puso are eaten by hands. For sanitation purposes, food servers would offer a plastic cellophane or two to serve as “eating gloves”. I personally don’t prefer it though because it’s too environment-unfriendly. Oh well…

And aside from siomai, foods such as fried chicken, tempura and ngohiong are in demand in Naga, too.

Naga Seawall at Night

The seawall at the town plaza of Naga (not to be mistaken with Naga City in Camarines Sur) is perhaps the most familiar feature of the city. Fronting Cebu Strait, the place is mistakenly called the “baywalk”, probably due to its resemblance with the more famous Manila Baywalk in Luzon.

The seawall is popular among locals who seek some time to unwind in an inexpensive way. Most of the visitors come during late afternoon when the sun is at its low. After each mass at the nearby Saint Francis of Assisi Church, mass goers also flock the place usually after a hearty meal featuring Naga’s popular food: siomai.

Above all, the seawall is a chief nighttime destination for families, friends, lovers and the lonely. :D

Seaside Scene

This is how the walled seaside of Naga looks like during nighttime. Aside from the beautiful by-the-sea scenery of moored ships and streetlights of adjacent towns, colorful lamp posts along the seawall are also fun to watch.

One Night at Naga Seawall

A night at the seawall can be a lot of fun if you were there with someone special. Check those pair of lovebirds at the left side of the pic. They are something to be envied of, aren’t they? Ha!

On Top of That Lamp Post

Not only the colors of this lamp post would amaze you, but also its structural design! Oops, one bulb has burned out. Maintenance in-charge, anyone?

The Nearby Coal Power Plant

If you were at the seawall, your eyes would definitely get caught by the well-lit coal power plant of KEPCO-SPC. Jointly owned by Korea Electric Power Corporation and Salcon Power Corporation, the plant currently supplies electricity within the Visayas grid. Despite consistent environment-related criticisms, it was inaugurated by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III himself in 2011 to address growing power needs in the country.

Dumaguete City Seaside

Found at the southern tip of Negros Island, Dumaguete City serves as the provincial capital of Negros Oriental as well as one of the chief port cities in the Visayas, being linked by sea routes to nearby provinces like Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor and Zamboanga del Norte.

Last week, I went there, but not according to plan. I was actually going to Siquijor from Cebu City, but the fast craft that I was supposed to ride in cancelled its trip due to heavy waves. And with that, there I found myself in Dumaguete, taking the only chance I had to reach my destination.

Unfortunately, the last boat bound for Siquijor that day had already departed by the time I arrived in Dumaguete. And so, I had no choice but to stop off and spend the night in the city, and wait for tomorrow for the next earliest trip.

Though it was evening when I came, I somehow managed to find time to roam around the city and look at some interesting sights. The first that I checked out was the city’s wall-protected seaside.

The Moon, the Sea and the Seaport

It was a moonlit night then, and this was the scene from the sea wall near Dumaguete’s main seaport. The weather slowly shifted from fair to so-so as dark clouds started to drift by and waves forcefully hit the embankment.

Phoning by the Sea Wall

I don’t know what the lady on the left was trying to tell over the phone. It’s inappropriate for me to know it though. Let’s just suppose she’s up for a meet-up or she’s a weatherwoman delivering the latest storm updates. LOL.

Seaport from Afar

This is the not-so-close view of Dumaguete’s chief seaport. By looking at the aggressive waves and the depth of the night, you may presume that no boats would sail away from the port anytime soon. And you’re right!

Nighttime Glimpse of Silliman

One of the buildings situated along Dumaguete’s coastline is that which you see in the pic. That’s an edifice belonging to Silliman University, one of the most famous and premier universities in the Philippines.

Dumaguete’s National Highway

This part of Dumaguete’s national highway kind of fascinated me. On the left is actually where Silliman University is located, and the streetlights there are sodium-type. Meanwhile, on the right lies the nearby seaport. What keeps it bright are classic lamp posts. That’s all.

Street Business

Some streets in Dumaguete are peopled with risk-defying yet hardworking vendors who sell wide varieties of goods such as the Coca-Cola products those ladies on the left offer. Sales during that night seemed good. Too bad there’s no more beverage available for the bike-riding lad. So he ended up buying an ice water. Hey, don’t waste it!

Large-scale Street Business

And here’s the pic featuring a more flourishing and capital-intensive version of street business in Dumaguete. Note that I’m calling it “street” business, not “sidewalk” nor “street-side” business. It’s just because vendors engaging in it are in fact occupying one lane of the road for their entrepreneurial endeavors. No problem though, I guess. :)

Now I know why that fast craft bound for Siquijor cancelled its trip. There was no major weather disturbance at that time, yet killer waves could be seen fiercely moving to and fro and hitting the concrete sea wall. How much more if there was…

As Waves Strike the Wall

Gladly, sea waves are in liquid form, so when they strike the sea wall, they strike more smoothly than what solids do. That “smoother” strike may become a major winner then if photoed. Right?

Yes, you’ve just read it! Silliman University was founded in 1901. That’s during the occupation of the Philippines by the Americans. A piece of history!

Carcar Rotunda

This rotunda (rotonda) found in the city of Carcar is a famous landmark which serves as the gateway between Metro Cebu and southern Cebu province, and a symbol of the city known for its rich cultural heritage, native delicacies and shoe industry.

If you come from the metropolis, you would notice that the national highway splits into two from here. The first road (straight ahead) would lead you to the southern municipalities of Cebu which face the nearby island-provinces of Bohol and Siquijor. These municipalities include Sibonga, Argao, Dalaguete, Alcoy, Oslob and Boljoon. Meanwhile, the second road (turn right) will take you to the western side of southern Cebu. You will get to reach municipalities like Barili, Dumanjug, Alcantara, Ronda, Moalboal, Badian, Alegria, Guinatilan, Malabuyoc and Samboan, and see Negros island off the shore. These two roads will then meet at the southern tip of the province where the municipality of Santander is situated.

Pedicab and Trisikad Streets of Panabo City

Though identified as a city since 2001, there are still things in Panabo that remain unchanged which make people reminisce at how the place used to be—a humble municipality of Davao province. One of them is the huge number of public utility pedicabs and trisikads that still rule the streets of the city, serving as a major means of transportation.

A pedicab in Philippine setting, is a vehicle consisting of a motorcycle installed in a 6-seater (or more) cab. A trisikad on the other hand, is a foot-operated vehicle. It is derived from the words “tricycle” (since it is 3-wheeled) and “sikad” (the Cebuano equivalent for “pedal”).

More contemporary and faster automobiles such as multicabs, jeepneys and buses are available though. But it seems that Panaboans are and will still be better off riding on these small transports, not to mention that many of the populace regard them as livelihood. I just wish it won’t worsen the traffic situation of the city in the coming years.

Brgy. North Poblacion Medical Mission

My present employer, Taiheiyo Cement Philippines, Inc. usually holds a series of medical missions every year as part of its Social Development and Management Program (SDMP). In collaboration with its raw materials supplier, Solid Earth Development Corporation, these activities are strategically carried out to any of the barangays being identified to experience impacts of our plant’s operations.

In 2011, four medical missions were conducted and one of these took place in Barangay North Poblacion, San Fernando, Cebu. With the active participation of the barangay council, barangay health workers (BHWs) and volunteers, the event was positively received by the residents.

And with my Sony NEX-C3 camera, which was new and just about to be used for the first time at that time, here are some of the catchy pics I had taken.

Blood Pressure Check

There’s definitely no medical mission in history in which, the checking of vital signs was excluded. One of the significant points of this checkup is the use of sphygmomanometer and stethoscope to check the patient’s blood pressure (BP). The woman who does it in the picture is actually my officemate, and you have to know she is not a nurse but rather a hardworking employee of our purchasing department. Competitive!

Doctor, Doctor! I am Sick…

By the confused look of the kid, we may sort of presume that’s he’s not in good shape. His mother might have felt it lately, so here they are, availing the free checkup and consultation by one of our volunteer doctors.

Nurse in Action

Now, this officemate of mine is in fact a licensed nurse! Checking the patient’s blood pressure must have been a worry-free task for her. Well, it’s the least that a nurse can offer.

The Helpful Security and Crowd Control Officer

In free-of-charge activities such as medical missions, organizers must expect that a considerable number of people may take part and take advantage of the services being offered. With such a situation at hand, security and crowd control officers are strategically assigned at the venue so as to maintain order. A bonus benefit for the participants if the officer they try to consult possesses sense of courtesy and responsiveness. Right, Chief?

Don’t Move! I will Thermometer-Gun You Down

Some devices have certainly evolved in their ways. Take for example the thermometer, which used to be a simple stick instrument containing mercury. Through time, it evolved and was digitalized. Then recently, it was modified and added with laser technology, a trigger, and a grip to become more hand-friendly. Now that it looks like a gun, if you were a health worker, it’s an imperative to put some dramatic expressions on your face as you check your patient’s body temperature. And to the patient, keep that “I’m scared!” act. :P

Queuing for Free Medicines

Don’t even think that this medical mission was carried out at a prison, alright. It’s just that the pharmacy station, which provides free medicines to patients as per doctors’ prescription, was just located at a gated area of the venue. This is for crowd control purposes. Now, here’s your medicines, dude. :)

Boxes of Medicinal Giveaways

These are some of the medicines that were given away during the medical mission. Not only capsules and tablets were offered but also drops and syrups. Aside from medicines, multivitamins were then included because as you know it, prevention is better than cure.

Tell Me Where It Hurts, My Baby

That’s one of our volunteer dentists. She’s trying to figure out which of the kid’s teeth hurts so she’ll be able to commence the extraction. I could still remember what the kid said afterwards: “Swear it won’t hurt”. Awww. Now you’re putting pressure on Ms. Dentist, boy.

These are the brave kids who showed up in the medical mission. You can’t really tell their bravery with their tense and uneasy looks though. We tried to calm them down by letting them watch TV programs. It’s just that most of them we’re thinking the process would include sharp needles and pain. Not really…only tooth extraction. :P

Kids are kids, and in fairly serious occasions like a medical mission, it can’t be helped that they tend to search for childish fun to the point of messing around. So to avoid it, here’s the television + DVD player. Now, watch as you wait.

Barangay Volunteers

What’s good about medical missions isn’t only the fact that there’s free medical checkup and free medicines, but also the presence of voluntary cooperation from the residents through the local council. Here’s one in uniform! Such a diligent Mr. Crowd Control Officer.

The Health-Conscious Grandma

Sometimes when we see old persons, we jokingly say “they only have very little time left in this world”. That’s true though ‘cause aging implies deterioration of life. But as long as there is life, value it by staying healthy…just like what this grandma does.

Modern Eye Checkup

The medical mission also offered free eye checkup—thanks to our optometric partners who, in this modern era, have also took their job to higher levels by introducing modern optical instruments such as that Shin Nippon apparatus that you see in the pic. That was a Snellen chart back then…

Free Spectacles

Upon optical examination, those who were identified to have significant sight problems had the chance to own a pair of reading glasses. The nice catch here was that it’s gratis and available in several colors.

Dental Tools

These are some of the tools that were taken by the dentists out of their bags. They placed them on a long table, and as I tried to identify any of them, I ended up realizing I know nothing. But the tools were cool!

Tooth Extraction Caught on Cam

I actually have more pics of this type, but this one is the most decent. I mean, with due respect to those who are not used to seeing the process of tooth extraction, you can bear looking at this one. The dentist seems to be good ‘cause I don’t see any signs of pain from his patient. Or maybe, I should thank his glove-covered hand for that. Ha! :)

Scenario at the Registration Desk

The mission’s registration desk actually consisted not only of TCPI and SEDC employees (wearing white shirts) but also of North Poblacion’s BHWs (wearing pink shirts). This photo was taken during snack time, and registration was still on the go despite that. Gladly, as no more registrants were sighted, my officemate (the smiling lady) would now have her moment to indulge in eating her snack. :D

The Venue

Yep! This medical mission took place in an elementary school named after the municipality of San Fernando. It’s an old school really. My late grandmother used to study here when she was very young.

Registration: Feeling It!

Emotions can get more intense even just by being one of those registration guys. It springs in various ways as follows: 1) the patient’s medical history is emotionally moving; 2) the patient is hard to understand; 3) the patient and the registrar don’t feel the vibe at all, and so on. So what is it in your case, sir? :P

We Care…

Our medical missions for the year 2011 adopted the catchphrase “We Care”, and this has been printed at the back of our uniforms/shirts. Despite being simple, it in fact says it all as to what the activities are all about. It’s just that we care, baby. :))

Natawo’ng Ing-ani (Born This Way Bisaya)

I think a lot of my friends have been waiting for this since I started generating buzz as early as 3rd quarter of 2011. Well…feels right now. Ha!

Being Lady Gaga’s most successful track, and a song covered by a lot of artists and artist wannabes, not to mention the inspiration it has brought to listeners esp. the LGBT community, “Born This Way” really deserves to be in the spotlight for quite a time upon its release. And the moment it went #1 in almost all charts and achieved uber-popularity, I was like, “this has to have a Cebuano version”. Then, the translation process went right away, which didn’t take so long.

After months of waiting for the holidays so I could take a leave and return to my hometown (where the recording paraphernalia and my prospect featurette are), I finally recorded the remake with my cousin Bianca, whom I introduced before in “Maniniyot” (my remake of “Paparazzi”). It’s sort of challenging for her because she had to record it for a couple of nights; and even more challenging because she’s actually pregnant. That would imply I’d been a cruel cousin. LOL! But she’s OK. :)

The editing was supposed to take only 2 weeks, however busyness at work caught me so it took me a month to do it. Now, I’m glad to present it to y’all!

Capturing Sto. Niño's Picturesque Beauty

This minor basilica of Santo Niño is probably the second most renowned religious and historical landmark in Cebu City. The topmost of course, is the nearby Magellan’s Cross which is actually steps away from this place of worship.

Being recognized that way, the spot has become a major tourist destination. It attracts thousands of visitors each year, including this Japanese acquaintance of mine, whom despite being non-Catholic, enjoys taking photos of the beautiful façade of the church.

CZARpiqx: A New CZARdom Feature

I’ve always been interested in photography. Yet, unlike everybody else who loves it, I don’t really pay close attention to the technicalities. It’s not that I take pictures plainly, but it’s just that I believe every photo I take speaks of something no matter how unprofessional (if that’s what it’s called) it would look like.

I value image quality by the way, but not too much like really investing a lot of money for it. Apart from that, an image with a message and with an artistic sense catches me. This actually matters more to the point that I may disregard high-quality pics, however lacking message and artistry. As to how I execute this…all depends on my feelings and personal opinion. :)

Obtaining such pics doesn’t require me to take a lot of preparation time. I take pictures with my cam whenever I want to. And if I think one shot seems like a jackpot, I keep it. I am a come-what-may photographer. Ha!

I surely have taken a number of pics ever since I got myself a cam. And now, I am reviewing them once more in search of awesome shots that’s worth sharing for. And with this, I am pleased to announce y’all a new CZARdom feature for my photography endeavors: CZARpiqx!

Check my blog at some times as I will be posting pics I am proud to say I took in the past and recently. Most of the pics are raw, however some were taken with effects from the camera I used. But rest assured, none were photoshopped.

Tulo (3 Cebuano Version) Encore

I can’t believe there would come a day that I’d be releasing a music video for an old song out of very, very old footages. Anyway, I just did.

Before you watch it below, let me just speak a little bit about the video’s background.

Consisting of raw footages taken at 2 separate periods: December 2009 and April 2010, this video features my beloved circle of friends (the McDo Berkz) with cameo appearances of some members of my NJC family.

Proud but not boastful enough, I directed, edited and produced this video with the help of my ever supportive college buddies. Y’all are on the credits, guys! Thank you!

It took me almost (or over) a year to do this because I’m quite a perfectionist + busy at work and play + indecisively creative. I guess that’s how it’s supposed to be when you are assuming you’re a celebrity. LOL!

But no matter how long the process was, the best thing is it’s finished and the finished product is a product of hard work. Bow.

I’m actually planning to re-upload them all just so I can have an online library of my musical translation works. It was all there on imeem, but imeem’s gone so, I gotta do it all over again. Should I be mad?
