The first three panels were intended for a show in Portland. I always wanted to do the whole series of seven, but ran out of steam. But now here I am three years later and these great ideas find me! An Unschedule Trip

You've heard me talk a lot about counting my blessing. A lot of times it's a morale booster when I'm feeling funky. I've heard it said a couple of times lately, "Well Dave, it could be worst." I don't like the idea of backwards blessing. I think there are enough blessings right in front of us. The reason I say that is, I remember when I was in an art class years ago, the teacher warned us to not compare our work to other. He said "You'll always find somebody who is better or worst then you, and you can get in the habit of focusing on your neighbors piece when you should be concentrating on your own."

Things have gotten a little heck-tick lately. I'm living the homeless shelter here in Boise for now, and I can still say to you honestly, that I'm happier than I was six months ago. I still don't have a car. I have to ride the bus and I get lost a lot. Still looking for a job. Haven't seen the little kids but two hours since I got back from New Mexico. But Griffin has been diligent, and a rock, and a big help. Oh yeah, and I'm not still having symptoms, but I'm not in the hospital, and I'm holding it together,

The first night I was in the shelter I didn't sleep very much. It was as bad as you might think ~ fifty to eighty guys you don't know, farting and snoring. and not knowing any of them or what they're capable of. Some nights are better then others. I still wake up all the time and think, "Oh man, am I still here?!"

It's not forever.

~ And I got pointed in the right direction for some good programs. I am surprised how much Boise is doing for the homeless. For now I have a place to sleep. Food to eat. Warm clothes & a soft pillow.

I always liked when the kids were little, Jennifer would help them to pray during family prayer. She would point out the simplest of things to them ~ soft pillows, toys, etc.

I still think of that now and again.

Funny story though ~ we have to do chores everyday. We've all heard the "don't drop the soap" jokes. Well, my chore one day was to scrub the big showers. I was throwing trash away and not thinking about anything, and I went to pick up a bar of soap that had gotten wet a stuck solid to the tile! There I was bent over doing all I could to pick it up ~

~ and suddenly I stand straight up and think ~ "oh shit! it's a trap!"

I have been drawing in diners and fast food restaurants for years. Me and waitresses get along well. I have dated quite a few and even married a few too. I like it when they call me "Darling" or "Sweetie," and they like watching me draw and the occasional free art work!

I'm drawing at a restaurant lately that has been a round a long time. All the waitresses that wait on me have been there a long time. You can tell that when they started there, all of them use to be really cute. Now they have been there thirty years and are now in there fifty's, and well, you draw your own conclusion.

When did we become our Moms and Dads?

As funny as it sounds I just realized that Harvey Wood is my first children’s book ~ and being that as it may ~ this book is the one I will learn what to do, and unfortunately , what not to do. I started character studies in April 2005. I’m still working on that nine years later. I am learning how consistency of design, color, and technique holds its way through the whole project. Think I have it.

Developing the world that Harvey lives in has been a real challenge. I have the story already so I know where everything begins and ends. I even have it slated to what goes on each page, but just couldn't put my finger on how it will look. Until about six months ago! I was stuck on the first page; the house in the Cascade Mountains.

I went over and over in my head, for years, what kind of house would Kelsey and McKenna live in? It took me years walking around make-believe forests looking for the right house. I finally stopped and sat down on a magic mushroom somewhere on a well-trodden path in the far reaches of my imagination, when it occurred to me to ask myself "Where would I live?" ~ Well I knew that right away! From then on everything clicked.

I lived in northern California for a year after I got out of college in 1987. It was near my grandpa and all my aunts and uncles and cousins. In fact I worked for one of my uncles. It was a dream come true. My aunt bought my cousin and I tickets to U2 in Oakland, so I needed a date. I thought of this girl named Barbie right away. She was nice. We talked at church a lot. She was pretty, smart, kind and she laughed at my jokes. But what attacked me to her the most was that she agreed to go out with me at all!

I drove to her house and parked my car. What a great house! It had a lot of history. My uncle and cousins talked a lot about it when I got to work on Monday. Over the next year I was there all the time. Hanging out with them shaped who I was for years to come.

I wish I was a stronger writer so that I could tell you more. There was a cool fireplace, french doors, and a huge staircase. Barbie had a lot of brothers and sisters. I think a million people lived in that house! I told you the Vicky story already. She was Barbie's younger sister and she was sitting in the living room of this house the first time I saw her.

...and though that house and all it's people are now only memories,
~ thank goodness some memories last forever.

About the drawing. It still need to be painted but I'm on my way. This project has taken so long we now have to consider formatting for iPads and such.

Still shaky. They put me back on the blue pill this week. It hasn't kicked in yet. It wasn't too bad tonight. So that's a good thing.

~ there will be no pity parties held today!

The last time I put myself in the hospital they had to drug me to get me off the walls. After it got to that point, it felt like I hadn't been myself for a really long time. Not good. Feeling like me again got the creative juices flowing and all was right with the world ~ well, kinda...
...but as soon as I came down I drew “Angels with Wings on Their Heels”.

This time I went into the hospital they were picking me up with a shovel, again not good. I hadn't drawn in a long time. If you have ever been in a grocery store when the lights go out, you will notice immediately the power is shut down to only what is absolutely necessary. Milk and Cheese refrigerators are on, but the overhead lights have been reduced to a minimum. My mind had done the same thing, only I felt like I was in the dark with the taste of sour milk in my mouth. Drawing was not on my mind ~ at all.

I have been to the ER in April and now this, my “Fido be a good dog medicine” wasn't doing its job.

They wanted to mess with my meds ~ a lot!

When I went in I had: a blue pill that stops me from shaking. A pink pill that keeps me off the ceiling, a red pill that keeps me off the floor, and a kind of peach color pill that acts like a referee between the pink and red pills. Oh yeah, a grey pill for my thyroid. It sounds like a lot, but I’m quite sure I couldn't have had a marriage that lasted as long as it did, or a family, or work, or go to school.

~ you know what I mean?

In fact the bottom only started falling out in 2007. However, it has been getting worst since then, with more trips to the hospital, and generally not being able to function. It is very clear to everyone these thing are helping me not to fine, "a permanent solution to a temporary situation".

Treating Bipolar is like being a Voodoo doll; everyone is just taking their turn sticking the needles in to you and seeing what comes next.

So there they were, thinking deep thoughts, and deciding which one sticks in the next needle!

They decided to take away the blue pill that keeps me from shaking ~ don’t get a head of me ~ less pink pill and more red pill. Peach and grey pills get to stay the same. “Well Dave, if they take away your blue pill won’t you shake?”

OHH YES! These are high cycle trimmers I get from my Mom’s side of the family. You know those little old ladies that look like bobble head dolls? That’s how my Mom was, and that’s what I got to look forward to! Not good. Within two days I was shaking so hard I couldn't hold a pencil ~ two weeks later I couldn't hold a fork! It comes and goes. Some days I have to use a spoon and I can’t draw very well. But in two weeks I get checked out again. Everything is going to be alright, that's what I keep telling myself:)

“Batboy + Chicken” Was drawn in the hospital this time and the last thing I drew before the shakes hit me. I kinda cringed to see Batboy on the edge, it hit too close to home. He looks like he is really considering it, but in a Jimmied Cricketsque way the Chicken says,

“You wanna do that…you better rethink this...it looks like it will leave a mark!”

17 Essential Ingredients For
Being A Happy Person

1. The ability to be okay with not always being okay. Happy people aren’t the ones who are happy all the time, they’re the ones who can process through all of their emotions and experiences gracefully, with the knowing that everything is impermanent, everything turns out okay in the end, and feeling negative serves as a signal to you that’s just as important — maybe even more so — than feeling positive about something does.

2. Humility. Being in tune (and okay with) your humanness, being able to say you were wrong, to ask for help, to get medication, to objectively evaluate how your actions factor into an equation. This is the root of being able to change yourself. People are usually blocked from humility out of fear and shame of losing that sense of control that comes with portraying perfection, but it’s a backwards logic that causes infinitely more problems in the end.

3. A few close friends from different parts of your life who fulfill different aspects of your personality. Aside from it being generally unsustainable to have too many friendships, having a few intimate relationships with people who you are completely, unabashedly yourself with is really, really important. These are the people who you can be comfortable around, actually enjoy your life with, who will tell you like it is and won’t placate you into remaining stuck in your old habits.

4. Enough money to pay the bills, save a little and spend a little, and the gratitude that comes with understanding how much happiness money can buy. Money can buy the books you love to read. Money can buy your yoga classes and groceries. It keeps a roof over your head and clothes on your back. It’s not irrelevant, but it’s not extraordinarily important. Once you figure out what makes you really happy (hint: it’s usually not $3,000 in clothes every month) cover your essentials and cultivate gratitude for simply being able to pay the bills, spend some and save some, your whole life will become richer and deeper and more thoroughly enjoyable. Generally speaking, if it isn’t enough now, it won’t ever be.
5. The ability to realize that everything you experience is a reflection of who you are. The second you realize that everything you feel and experience is a reflection of who you are and a manifestation of what you are, you become your own locus of control. You realize that you are in control of your experiences, and that you can choose happiness through matter of course.

6. A health-wellness-mind-body-spirit routine. You are a being within a being, and for the time being, you have to keep it functioning. This isn’t about devoting your entire life to unrealistic and unaffordable health regimens. This is about drinking water. Finding foods that are good for you that you enjoy. Taking a walk with someone you love. Meditating for calmness, reading for clarity, the ability to listen to your body and keep it healthy. It’s hard to enjoy much else until this is done.

7. Always having long term projects going, giving life a sense of balance and forward momentum. This is absolutely not to say you lose touch with the present moment, only that you have something to work on and toward, that you are in tune with what you want to become and that you have enough going on for you that your eggs aren’t ever falling through one basket.

8. The genuine ability to be able to put your phone down, turn your computer off, disconnect from work and enjoy your life. Work-related anxiety is normal and understandable, but balancing your hours pounding your fingers on a keyboard and actually living your life is the make-or-break between happy people and not. It doesn’t matter how much you love your job, you’re not going to perform to your best ability if you’re overworked and burning out, not to mention a main source of work-related anxiety is the fact that you don’t have anywhere else to diffuse your attention.

9. One routine you can go to so you can let off steam and recalibrate yourself — whether that’s working out or meditation or a mantra or even reading a book, whatever. You need to know what to do and where to go when your soul needs soothing. Part of being able to take care of yourself is being able to handle yourself outside of your day-to-day mental and emotional maintenance.

10. A few rough and tumble experiences to date. The best people — the most loving and caring and honest and down-to-Earth — are the ones that have seen some shit in their day. Happy people know suffering more than anybody else. That’s how they see how beautiful their lives are.

11. The understanding that “good” and “bad” are subjective. Once you can release your attachments to what’s “good” and what “should be” and start seeing everything as simply a matter of experience, your life becomes infinitely easier. You realize that the things you once saw as personal failures were your redirects, lessons are more important than being okay all the time, and what’s right to someone is wrong to another. It’s a matter of conditioning and perspective, all of which you can shift once you’re aware of it.

12. The ability to reconnect with the reality of “this too shall pass.” It’s been my mantra for seven years, and it’s the one notion that has consistently, throughout all that time, been a grounding idea for me: the fact that whatever terrors I’m currently feeling will pass — as all the others prior to them have — but also that whatever I have that’s great and lovely and enjoyable will be gone someday too, so it’s at once a comfort that even the worst things don’t last, and a call to remember that neither will the best.

13. Gratitude. People think that they can only be grateful for the things they want, but gratitude is something you cultivate. It’s realizing that every experience serves you in some way, and the simple ability to know where your next meal is coming from, to have access to the Internet to be able to read this, to be literate, are not things everybody is guaranteed in life.

14. A fundamental understanding of the bigger picture — whatever that means to you. If you consistently get lost in the minutiae of your life, you’ll lose sight of what actually matters. “What actually matters,” however, is up to you. You choose how you view the purpose and meaning of the culmination of your years. You decide what’s going to be important to you in the long run. This guidance system keeps you from getting lost in the silly, energy wasting things that don’t matter.

15. The ability to enjoy the little things, your day-to-day life. It’s true what they say: that’s all we really have in the end. You won’t remember the years of your life, you’ll remember singular moments within them. All big things are made from a series of little things put together.

16. Simplicity. Being able to devote your mind, attention and time to just the few things that matter keeps you grounded and satisfied. Clearing your space of the things you don’t need, the people who don’t serve you and the thoughts that weigh on you lets you live a lighter, fuller, happier life. Most things are meant to be simple, we just complicate them in our minds.

17. Purpose. This is the most important fundamental of happiness: a sense of greater purpose. Whether that’s to be the best sister you can, to be come a teacher who changes lives, to serve whatever God you believe in… a sense of purpose gives meaning to the sometimes frustrating ins-and-outs of everyday life.

It's funny ~ the one thing I didn't want to think about when I was younger, is the thing I can’t stop thinking about now that I’m older. I was afraid to die. But over the years, as I have mellowed, there is a peace I've never know before. I won’t go into all of it, but picking some of my favorite songs has been kind of a spiritual experience.

But really, I think I'll take a Mulligan on this one, while trying not to let this grind me down to a complete stop. As for the picture, it's just a journal entry now. This was all part of a plan I had to take her to the zoo here in Boise ~ and in front of the penguin tanks give her a pebble (heart shaped) like penguins do ~ but even that blew up in my face.

You know ~ I wanted the picture to be something she would keep on her wall forever. Now it's nothing I'd even print or show. (Nice colors though:)

Tim Harris ~ A Gift To The World

Tim and the snowman he picked out!

Me and Tim~ Tim's Place reached 40,000 hugs while we were there. Oh Yeah!

Harrison asked me to get Tim's autograph. Tim did him one better and wrote him a note!

Who knows now how I first stumbled a crossed Tim’s video, but it is now a significant part of my history. The day I found it, I watched it about 10 times! It may seem excessive yes, but that's so like me. Once I listen to Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love” 100 times over the course of a single weekend; I liked the way the song made me feel at peace about me in the world. The same thing happened to me when I watched Tim’s video. It spoke to something very deep inside me; we are all gifts to the world, we all have something to contribute, and we can accomplish our dreams if we put our hearts into it...but how do I convey this to somebody?

I felt this over welling sense to give back to Tim.

I surprised myself when I called down to Albuquerque and found myself talking to Kevin the manager of Tim’s Place: Breakfast, Lunch & Hugs. He was very nice and not a bit shocked that a grown man was calling from Boise, Idaho blathering about Tim, art and “feelings”. We talked for a little bit. I explained to him who I was, what I do, and that I wanted to give Tim some of my art. He took down my web address and said he would help Tim pick something out.

When we got there Tim was at the door. Things were kindda busy. A lot of people. A lot or regulars. It was the kind of place that Tim sat down at your table if he knew you. Food was great. I got two hugs. It was a hug fest! When I gave him his picture I handed it to him and snuck away to our table. Out of the corner of my eye I could see him hold it up to the whole restaurant. He liked it, that's what mattered.

We all have our own way of communicating, and art was my way that I could tell Tim he was a gift not just to the world in general, but to me specifically. It’s about reaching out. I don’t know all the places the thought is written down, but it is in the New Testament it says ~ “Ask and ye shall receive ~ Knock and it shall be open unto you ~ Seek and ye shall find”. Sometimes it’s just as easy as asking. Other times it’s a little harder and you have to go asking around. And still there are those times you have to search high and low before you get what you are after. This trip had a little of all three. But in the end I felt like the great conversation of life had happen for me.

Tim's Place is the kind of place I could go back to a hundred times!

Traffic Box Call-to-Artist

Artists are invited to apply for an opportunity to design art for traffic control boxes. Several creative folks will be selected and others added to a "Registry" for future traffic box projects.

Since 2009, the Mayor's Neighborhood Reinvestment Program, Capital City Development Corporation, and Boise City have provided funding in partnership with the Downtown Neighborhood Association and the Downtown Boise Association to commission Idaho artists to design murals for Ada County Highway District
traffic control boxes in Boise. 70 are wrapped. Artists who have designed a box before are eligible to re-apply, however the selection panel may give preference to artists who have not yet participated. Boise's Department of Arts & History is facilitating artist selection process and project management.

TO APPLY

1. Artists send in ten digital visual examples of past work, letter of interest and resume (72 dpi jpgs).

2. A selection committee made up of representatives from stakeholder groups will review the applications and choose artists with whom to work. Additional artists will be selected for Traffic Box "Registry" so that if, in the next year, additional funds are available to transform other boxes, artists from the registry will be selected to create designs.

3. Selected artists will be paid $1,000 to design one mural each, featuring a community-related theme, using provided templates as a guide. Artists do not fabricate or install the final art on the box.

4. The fabricator will take the artist designs (which can be prepared as illustrations, paintings, computer designed images, quilts, mosaics, photographed sculptures or photographs), transform them into a vinyl wrap, and then apply them to the traffic boxes.

5. Artworks will be celebrated with a dedication and walking tours on a date to be announced.

Georgia In Space

This is a follow up of sorts to "Brady Bunch on Acid". It is part of the never-ending saga that is my family. This piece entitled "Georgia in Space" is an idea I've had for months and months. I even drew it on a Post-it note and carried it around in my wallet for awhile.

In this episode our girl finds herself lost in tall-tall grass in her front yard, pulling a humongous chawahwah, wearing a pink tutu, riding in a tiny red wagon...That's it! I got nuthin' else. No parable. No deep meaning. No political overtones. Just what you see in front of you. Sometimes a chawahwah wearing a pink tutu is just a chawahwah wearing a pink tutu!

(she graduated a year before me in high school).
She was our school's Spirit leader. Five foot nothing. They could toss her five ways till Sunday; Which is what also made her bad ass. She was part of the popular crowed and I was part of the future felon's society. Let's put it this way, if it were a John Hughes movie she was Molly Ringwald and, well I wasn't even Judd Hurst, I was Anthony Michael Hall!

But never mind that. Mine was a silent crush, and all of that is pleasant memories in the wind.
I'm so pleased that she wanted some of my art for her own!

An Introduction To The Art of David Street

Wasn’t much of a reader until I got into my twenties; I still don’t read for enjoyment. I was held back in second grade, because my ability to read was so below par. They put me in glasses to see if that would help, but in the end, it was just to many blows to the head as a little kid coming back to haunt me.

My spelling and grammar are embarrassing; I don’t hand write very much these days. I’ve become so dependent on spell check. I believe in a God with a wicked sense of humor, why else would He give me such a wonderful gift to visualize worlds without end, and not to be able to see the difference between the words “Horse” and “House” ~ or ~ “Country” and “County” ?

But I’m not mad.

There are so many people in my circle of friends that don't have these problems, and they keep an eye on me so that I don't get out of control. There was this one time when I was fifteen, I was ask to make the signs for a church car wash. I had about a half a dozen finished, as I was handing them out. My friend said, “You spelt something wrong!” ~ I was sure I had doubled checked everything ~ “You spelt wash wrong” he said. “No I didn’t!” I replied with little bit of a pissy tone.

There is something you need to know; my family talk’s funny. We have our own way about us. Like saying “flea-bargain” instead of plea-bargain, or “kennigarden” instead on kindergarten. I had No idea for many years. So when I was called on my poster I said “What?” ~ Car WARSH ~ C~A~R~W~A~R~S~H” ~ He just looked at me. I redid the posters without another word.

So here I am at fifty one with a wild hair to do a book about my art work.

I have a title “Hi! My name is David Street ~ what’s your name? ~ you gotta a dog?!” The title is on loan from my number three son, Harrison. He was about four, and he would go up to complete strangers, shake their hand, and introduce himself “Hi! My name is Harrison Street ~ what’s your name? ~ you gotta a dog?! It was so cool to watch him move so effortlessly in this world! He’s almost eighteen and he’s still doing it. I love it! What a great example he is to me.

Burning Down the House

Took down my art show from the University of Phoenix today. It was up for 17 months. Great experience. Sold some pieces, but even better, it bolstered my self convenience. I tell my kids, with every new challenge you are going to feel a little insecure, it's normal, but give it sometime, after awhile you're going to feel like you were born there!
Thanks to everybody who bought some art.

Last of the penguins. My kids and friend Debbie nudged this one out of me, otherwise I was feeling I was near the end. It is time to go forward with other projects ~ hopefully they will bring as much joy to all of us as these guys did. Big smile!

That quote has been attributed to Picasso, Steve Jobs, T.S. Eliot just to mention a few ~ Well I do not know who to believe, but I do know a lot of heavy lifting has been going on for centuries by both sorts. I have been eyeballing my own subject for years, only to have found I am about 100 years too late.

I posted a story about Sherlock Holmes's creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle last year. Use the link provided and have a look see. Remind yourself that there were some girls that had everybody in a whirl about photographs they took of fairies. Now I'm not here to step on any fairies or anyone's belief in them ~ I did however love the illustrations by Claude Shepperson that others have said were the bases of the girls fairies.

This comparison would not have been possible if someone hadn't been poking around old children's books. So, thanks to them, I have been doing some heavy lifting of my own this weekend. Again the target is Claude's wonderful ladies from 1913. Most especially the one in the middle. (See illustrations below)

I've tried to keep his lines and the flow of the figure. What sparked my imagination was how light and airy she is. My contribution was to make mine feel even lighter, almost as if she were in flight. And of course color. I really nailed it there. If I'm allowed to say so myself. This figure is earmarked for an up coming job, but if that doesn't happen, I will surly do something grand with her!
