Celtic Woman - Believe

The Celtic Woman were in South Africa recently for a Promo Tour of their up and coming 'Believe Tour' to be held at Carnival City in Johannesburg on the 28th & 29th September and at the Grand Arena, GrandWest, Cape Town on the 2nd October.

As soon as they landed they were keen to see the sights of Table Mountain. They're fortunate with the weather and the sunset was just glorious. For them, there is nothing quite like an African sky and the vibrancy of the colours of the sunset was just incredible. They're loving to be in South Africa to promote their Album, DVD and Show. Chloë and Máiréad have been with the Celtic Woman from the beginning so they've done a lot of Promo Tours. This tour has been the most fun and they've had a lot of laughs. Even though their schedule has been hectic at times, the tour has been really relaxed and they've thoroughly enjoyed it. Along with Lisa and Susan this is a force to be reckoned with. Before the tour they spent some time at home. Home for the Celtic Woman is Dublin, Ireland and the surrounding towns of Wicklow known locally as the 'Garden of Ireland'. This is near to the fabulous Powercourt House where they've previously performed and a venue that is incredibly beautiful, just like the woman themselves.

'Believe' is their latest album and it came about almost a year ago when the DVD was filmed. The songs were chosen by David Downes who is their musical composer, director and arranger. He works with the woman to select the songs. After they worked through the album, the title became the positive and life affirming title that it is. With 'Believe', they've been on an amazing journey. They went to America which was the very first live concert of the tour at the fantastic Fox Theatre. The concert was the most electric two nights they've experienced. The energy was phenomenal. The audience was amazing and sometimes travelled thousand of miles to be there. The States was the first country to embrace the Celtic Woman back in 2005 and it literally became an overnight success there. In the last few years it has been their second home and they're always been welcome with wide open arms. They've done some amazing DVD's over their time but 'Believe' is very close to their hearts as their fans have treated them so well in the past. They've even made journeys to Ireland specifically to see the Celtic Woman. As a thank you to the fans for being so loyal, it was the woman's way of coming to them. It was very special and the DVD captured that night so beautifully.

As they are modern woman, they love doing a mix of Celtic 'pronounced with a strong C', Traditional and Classical, with sounds of the 21st Century. With contemporary songs such as 'Bridge over Troubled Waters' you'll hear the traditional elements such as the pipe coming through. The whole show is woven together with a entrancing thread. It's a Celtic journey that makes people feel comfortable, because the diversity in the music appeals to so many different people. There are children, teenagers, their parents, grandparents who are in the audience. Just about every walk of life are at the shows and it has something for everyone. The whole family can come together and enjoy a broad spectrum of music with dancers, bagpipes, a choir and world-class band. This is the clearer vision of who the Celtic Women are and what is so beautiful about it. They aren't trying to fit into any box and that's what makes it magic.

'Awakening' is an original composition. What added to the magic was that it was so new and fresh. It's a very soothing song but also has a captivating drum beat behind it. The song is a powerful opening to the show and the camera crew captured every angle on stage with a panoramic 360 degree lens. They'll never forget the opening, while standing back stage, when Máiréad opened the show, with a single spotlight on her, her violin and bow silhouetted against the backdrop. With the violin opening the show it's like a key to a door, like the 'lion, witch and the wardrobe' just before the drummers explode onto the stage. Such contrasts and such beauty. Irish music is influenced by rhythmic and catchy melodies. Whilst being in South Africa they've listened to African music and see that everyone has a song inside of them. Through hardship songs were born about love, lament and loss, about land and leaving. Songs such as 'Sailing', 'The Parting Glass', 'A Women Heart' are so heart-felt and which South African audiences can relate to.

The woman's different personalities shine through in the show. Initially it was a huge appeal to have pure music, but now they incorporate a bit of talking. They're comfortable in each others company, and have grown with their fans and audiences all over the world, so it's really nice to have a conversation and a bit of fun. It's a feel good show, and they themselves always feel great afterwards. If people can take two hours out of their lives and come enjoy themselves, it's the best feeling in the world. No matter what day they've had to see people up on their feet and dancing their way out of the theatre is phenomenal. That is the best part of their job. The solo songs they perform are chosen to express their personalities according to their vocal style and their individuality comes through transferring their energy to the audience and the audience to them.

The timing was perfect for their newest member, Susan, when she got a call to join the group. She was recommended by the woman as well as the producers of the show. So it came about that she got a really lovely phone call one day, and she was very surprised and delighted. The first thing she did was go on the 'Believe' tour to America, then toured to Europe. It has been a whirlwind tour and together they've performed at some dream places.

The woman have a close relationship and a few of them know each other as children. In Irish schools they teach Gaelic which is a huge influence in their upbringing. Some of the first songs they learn are Gaelic songs. Prays are all done in this language and is very much a part of their lives. In Ireland there is an all Gaelic television station. They have young, gorgeous presenters from the rest of Ireland with a beautiful native tongue of speaking. There is sense of being 'cool' by speaking the original language. In many way it is at the moment very trendy to treasure the old ways and in recent years has had an injection of youth into it. Summer camps are hugely popular and promote sports and music all through speaking Gaelic. The language and dialect lends itself to be very musical and there is a huge flourish to keep the language alive and develop beautiful musicians. When they step away from it a little and see if from a distance they realize that their heritage, although sitting quietly in the background, is what it is to be a Celtic Woman.

As the sun sets and is gradually getting darker, these songs birds are lighting up the night sky. We're honoured and privileged to have these amazing woman in South Africa for a heavenly three nights'.

Conversations Over Time with Elan Lea

On a bustling Friday, I went into Cape Town to meet up with Elan Lea, talented singer and songwriter.

We met an avant-garde little cafe called Frieda's on Bree. It is a modest place that is pleasantly plain and functional with a twist. This is the ideal meeting spot for artists. The quality of food and conversation simply sets it apart.

Elan was casual-cool in jeans and a black shirt. Understated yet undeniably with a touch of class. Not attempting to impress by showing off his phenomenal talent. This is what I like about Elan, he is unaffected, has good manners and is without airs and graces. He was thoroughly natural, straightforward and sincere as someone self-assured of his craft. He is an artist through and through.

We spoke about his album 'Conversations over Time' and his journey from his last album. He has drawn on the previous influences of Robin Gibb whom he had the privilege to gain inspiration from. The new album has a lot more of 'him' in it and is a mirrored reflection of himself. He has made this creation very much his own.

Part love story, part breakup and part taking on the world - this is where we see Elan's inner soul. The lyrics are a mix of feelings and emotions that make the singles real and the heartfelt nature is easy to relate to. Gorgeous tracks such as 'Broken Man', 'Butterfly Best Friend' and 'Different Stories' are beautifully composed and can be listened to time and time again. For me this is where he has done his best work so far.

We spoke about his search for a leading lady that is gaining momentum in social media. The campaign is part of a drive to find his ideal lady to be in his next music video. Someone elegant, he is able to take home, with another facet to her personality that is uniquely her own but complimentary to Elan's style.

His schedule will allow him to be back in South Africa to perform in Johannesburg and of course, Cape Town which I personally can't wait for. Fans here will be in for a treat with the announcement of his leading lady and a warm up summer concert alongside SA's best.

The search is on for the Hansa Pilsener Next Beeg Dreamer

Hansa is searching the country to reward consumers with big ideas, related to music, branding, community and the home, hoping to inspire thoughts of how to improve the lives of fellow South Africans.

A panel of judges include musician Zakes Bantwini will help unearth these “beeg dreamers”.

The beer with the special ingredient is looking for four South Africans with special ideas, hoping to turn their dreams into reality.

Hansa Pilsener’s Next Beeg Dreamer campaign will reward winners in four different categories – Music, Hansa, Community, and the Home - with enough money to realise their respective dreams from the Hansa Dream Fund.

A panel of expert judges – musician and producer Zakes Bantwini (Music) entrepreneur and brand expert Thebe Ikalafeng (Hansa), former Miss South Africa Augustine Masilela (Community) and South African Breweries Marketing Manager Kelebogile Mashigo (Home) will whittle down the entries and decide on the top three ‘beeg dreamers’ in each category, with consumers then voting for the winners on the website, via SMS and through the interactive response voice line.

“The Music category looks for an invention that is music related, drawing its inspiration from Hansa’s previous advertising campaigns where the lead character Vuyo creates a musical instrument inspired by the vuvuzela,” said Mashigo.

“In the Hansa category people are invited to collaborate with the brand to come up with new ideas such as how to collect used bottles or enhance a celebratory occasion where a round of beers would be consumed, while the Community category looks for creative solutions to ease some of the struggles which affect our lives. It could be a mobile RDP house, solar powered lighting systems or community announcement networks. Through our communication we hope to encourage more thought and innovation around community development,” Mashigo said.

For the Home category, the judges are looking for an idea that will make tedious daily tasks simpler and more fun – a bar fridge that plays music, slippers which double as floor mops or a bicycle with a lawnmower attached.

The Dream Fund is a Hansa initiative that will be used to reward consumers who come up with exciting big ideas and, where practical, help them to realise it. Hansa will donate 10c from every bottle sold to the Dream Fund and give away R10 000 in a weekly draw.

Naturally 7 Opening Act for Michael Buble

American Music group, Naturally 7 has been confirmed as the opening act for Michael Buble’s South African tour in May. The tour begins in Cape Town on 1,2 and 3 May at Grand Arena (Grand West Casino and Entertainment World), and then Buble performs at Sun City on 5 and 6 May at the Superbowl.

Naturally 7 incorporates a range of styles from R&B to pop, gospel and jazz, and they are known for their distinct a cappella style they call "Vocal Play". New game will even make a poker face smile!

An exciting new progressive game of poker has been introduced to the casino floor at Carnival City. Known as Lunar Poker, the game offers increased options, improving the odds and giving players a greater advantage over the house.

Although the game is new to South Africa there is already a pot of R4.373.943 to be won and the accumulated total grows each day.

Quick to learn and simple to play, Lunar Poker is played at a table with a total of four players.

The Game

After placing an opening Ante bet, each player and the dealer are dealt five cards, with the dealer’s fifth card placed face up on the table. However, before any cards are dealt, each player may place an additional progressive bet, settled only on these first five cards.
While deciding to play or fold against the dealer, players have two options available to them, namely changing any of the cards in their hand for a fee of one Ante, or buying a sixth card, also for a fee of one Ante.
A player who holds two different combinations, one of which beats the dealer, will receive payment on both combinations. However, this is dependent on the first combination beating the dealer’s qualified hand, and having at least one card in the second combination that is not included in the first one.
The player has the option of placing an insurance wager on a hand with a combination of trips or higher, against the dealer not qualifying.
The dealer needs a combination of Ace-King or higher to play. If the dealer doesn’t qualify, the player has an option to ‘Buy the Game’ at a fee of one Ante. For this sum, the dealer will remove the highest valued card from their own hand, replacing it with a new card from the top of the deck. Should the dealer qualify at this point, any player with a higher winning combination wins.

Regular poker players will agree that Lunar Poker raises the odds on their beating the house. With so many options available, the player always feels that they are in with a chance of winning the hand.

Police honoured at Carnival City-Afrisun Trust’s SAPs 2011 Merit Awards

Special award for policemen who arrested the Facebook Rapist

Among the SAPs personnel honoured at the Carnival City and Afrisun Trust’s 2011 SAPs Awards dinner on Tuesday 27 March was the late Constable Bongani Dhlamini who, together with Sergeant Maurice Moloi, was instrumental in the capture of the notorious Facebook rapist.

Representatives from each Ekurhuleni police station packed the Carnival City Big Top Arena to enthusiastically applaud each nominee and the winners were invited up onto the stage to collect their awards from the trustees of the Afrisun Trust.

The four nominees in each of the nine contested categories included permanent SAPS members, civilians, reservists, volunteers and community police forum members from throughout the Ekurhuleni district. The Awards attracted 170 entries this year.

Constable Dhlamini and Sergeant Moloi from Brackendowns SAPs were both nominated for Top Cop for the role they played in apprehending the man dubbed the Facebook rapist. He taunted police for months before he was finally arrested in Alberton in October last year. He is currently in prison on several charges of kidnap and rape and one of murder. Constable Dhlamini sadly passed away on the 5th March, however his memory was honoured with a special merit award presented to him posthumously. Sergeant Moloi was similarly awarded.

Best Visible Police Member and Top Cop
The award for Best Visible Police Member as well as Top Cop went to Constable Pillay from the North East Rand Dog Unit. Constable Pillay’s zealous and determined efforts to rid the area of the scourge of drugs and drug dealers earned him this honour. During 2011 he variously assisted would-be suicide victims, closed down illegal shebeens and taverns, apprehended shoplifters and murders, solved four cases of cable theft amounting to over R30 000 and arrested a number of drug dealers in possession of cat, rock, dagga and cocaine.

Best reservist Actonville Cst A.M. Latif
Actonville Constable Latif was named the Best Reservist for outstanding work in the community and for his involvement in the arrest of criminals for, murder, ATM-bombings and police killings. Together with his team he successfully tracked down a murder suspect to Ladysmith where he was apprehended in connection with the murder of a local 16-year old boy. Latif also tracked down and arrested the suspect who shot and killed his partner, recovering the firearm too.

Best Volunteer
Oupla Thobejane from Vosloorus was named Best Volunteer. He has actively encouraged people to join local community patrols, assisted in 63 arrests covering common assault, armed robbery, drug dealing, domestic violence and rape. He helped to place 11 abused women in places of safety, even using his own home for this purpose. He also initiated a Stop Xenophobia Group.

Best Community Police Forum
Mr Selvan Naidoo, Chairperson of the Actonville-Wattville Community Police Forum accepted the Best Community Police Forum Award on behalf of them. Since being set up, SAPs has noted a dramatic drop in crime in the area and the Forum has been commended for its hard work, good organisation and dedication to the task. And the proof lies in the positive feedback received from the community.

Best Crime and or Communication Member
Captain Maome from Primrose was named Best Crime and/or Communication Member. He started a relief program to help victims of fires after their shacks are burnt down, built up relationships with stakeholders who assist with feeding and building materials whenever a natural disaster occurs and oversees the delivery of food parcels and blankets for all the victims, young and old. Toys and clothes for the less fortunate children are also distributed in the settlements. The Captain was particularly applauded for his engagement with communities and the time and effort he puts into teaching youngsters about the dangers of drugs and other social crimes and working closely with the patrollers in this regard.

Best Detective
Detective Warrant Officer Seema from Boksburg North walked off with the Award for Best Detective. This year his convictions include robbery, rape, murder and fraud. He relieved the residents of Impala Park from criminals, who terrorised them at night, he recovered stolen goods, and apprehended the suspects in the fatal shooting of a motorist at a local petrol station where he was filling up with fuel. The suspects are currently on trial.

Best Support Service Member and/or Civilian
Brakpan Administration Clerk Shaun Hansen received the Award for Best Support Service Member and/or Civilian. In addition to performing his own duties diligently, Hansen has unselfishly given up his own time to give members of the team computer training and is always available to assist with the computers or scanner. He does all this after hours, over weekends and on public holidays. He has also conducted one-on-one sessions with staff members to build morale and identify challenges they’re having.

Best Team – Tembisa Detectives – Five members Cst, Ndlovu, Mashaita, Rapaledi, Ramallo, Rakgogo and Detective Cst, Mohlalogany)
And for dedication to duty, five detectives from Tembisa were named the Best Team. Working closely with informants, and despite having just finished a long shift, the team were tipped off about a high-jacking syndicate. They immediately returned to work and with meticulous planning briefed back up and secured the area, blocking off all escape routes. After observing the area in plain clothes they waited until they had arrested five heavily armed suspects who exchanged fire until they were overpowered. The suspects, all from Limpopo, are currently in court on charges of robbery, stolen fire arms and high-jacking.

Entertainment at the Award evening was provided by songstress Tarryn Lamb, lead singer of La Vuvuzela, popular hip hop performer ‘Skillz’ and Penelope Jane Dunlop, better known to her legion of fans as the legendary PJ Powers.

The Afrisun Trustees were thanked for making the Awards possible and for arranging an evening packed with entertainment.

Hansa Festival of Legends rocks Orlando Stadium as Usher and top local talent take to the stage

Johannesburg, 11 March 2012 – Multiple Grammy award-winning artist Usher rocked a capacity crowd at the Hansa Festival of Legends this weekend.

After a build-up of several hours which featured top, as well as budding local talent, the crowd of 30 000 was hungry for the international superstar to take the stage at Orlando Stadium in Soweto and he did not disappoint. In a show which featured pyrotechnics and several wardrobe changes, the American proved why he is one of the greatest entertainers and best-selling artists of all time with renditions of You Make Me Wanna, Yeah! and Let It Burn. The massive rig and cutting-edge sound technology provided the platform for his famously fleet-footed dance moves, which received roars of appreciation from the crowd. “Soweto, I’m gonna take ya’ll back with me,” Usher told the crowd.

Earlier, the crowd braved the midday heat and a thunderstorm to listen to emerging talent, Hansa’s Legends in the Making. The six winning acts, drawn from across South Africa and chosen after a four month long talent search, got the crowd jiving. Pretoria boys Ma’pakshop’s high energy hip-hop was followed by Mo Klaasik “going monkey “, bringing his Mafikeng brand of smooth hip hop to Soweto. Hailing from Johannesburg, the fresh, eclectic sounds of Mo and the Dark Knights, combined with the sexy moves of four back-up vocalists in red dresses wowed the crowd as they crooned “unchain my heart”. Port Elizabeth band Shoelace’ soulful lyrics were evident in their track ‘People of the South’ while Abdus represented for KwaZulu-Natal with his Zulu rap about life. Wrapping up the Hansa Legends in the Making was Cape Town’s Busi M, bringing her haunting dulcet tones to the stage – truly a songbird to watch.

Hansa Pilsener General Manager Mosidi Seretlo said she was excited about the future prospects of the Legends in the Making, following their awesome performance. “It’s been a journey and a half for them and getting them on stage before the eyes of South Africans has been the ultimate reward.” Seretlo said the acts had “grown in confidence” and had graduated “from stars in the making to stars”.

Emcee’s Mo Flava and Zeal from Club 808 and METRO FM respectively introduced the cream of SA’s musical talents, Gang of Instrumentals, Liquideep, L-Tido, Zakes Bantwini and Teargas with Oskido, Vigilante, Capital and DJ Tira on the decks, who warmed up the crowd before the main act.

“This campaign has been a year in the making and the Hansa team was proud to see it all come together,” Seretlo said after the concert. “Every one of the performers displayed their truly special ingredient to the thousands of fans who gathered for the Festival , and we’re so excited to watch them becoming our country’s future legends.”

The XtraOrdinary Women 'Everyone has a Dream' Cocktail Evening at The Cape Royale Hotel & Spa was held on the 28th February on the Villa Deck on the 9th Floor of this beautiful hotel.

We're welcomed with cocktails around the pool deck and savoured the view of Cape Town. Prizes were drawn from lucky numbers that included spa treatments, personal development training and many more. Afterwards we listened to speeches from successful women that were both inspirational and heart felt. It was a privilege to hear about their private lives to help other entrepreneurs achieve their goals. Personally as a business owner, these are the lessons what I have taken to implement into my own life.

Entrepreneurs have the passion to move people forward. In recent years the commercial world in many respects has lost its lustre. Nevertheless, everyone still wants success. With successes come failures and it is how you get up from the failures that counts. If your spirit is also big and you want to be your own boss and ultimately gain money, position and power then being an entrepreneur is your ticket to freedom. Do everything from the ground up. Go to people and sell your company. Everything must come from inside as you you have the power to follow your dream and live your dream.

Carry out your passions as these cannot lie dormant. Feel the beauty, rhythm and learn to love oneself. Be proud and not modest that you are the CEO - whether it is the Cleaning Executive Officer or the Chief Executive Officer. Know how to get one's hands dirty. Be able to accomplish anything you are able to dream of. Believe in yourself. Enjoy the journey. Invest time in it even if you start small but just try it. And lastly show gratuity which is very important in gaining success.

Danscape 2011

Jazzart Dance Theatre presented their annual celebration of dance Danscape 2011 at Artscape.

It is a collaboration of various dance organisations to create a platform known as Danscape. Although largely a student based initiative, these young dancers have great things to come.

There were ten different dance dance routines. The first was iKapa Outreach Project with a dance entitled "I am here". Both white and black dancers showing the diversity of our country. Followed with a beautiful choreographed Indian dance inspired piece with a male lead that was incredibly fluid and polished. The Sibonelo Dance Project had a bamboo dance with striking red costumes all timed to perfection. Girls in brightly coloured outfits did a modern dance with weird movements and as a novice watcher of dance did not quite understand. Another all girl group in black and white started with classical ballet movements and then reflected their individuality to house music. The La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre & Wilvan School of Dance had a complicated dance routine showing the drama and temperament of spanish dancing.

My favourite performance of the evening was a quirky, fun, alien style ensemble that was so inspiring. These young dancers, some as young as 14 years or so as far as I could tell, star struck the audience with their creative dance moves and colourful costumes that were out of this world. I absolutely loved it!

The expression of dance, regardless of body shape, ethnicity, age or gender was the over-riding thread. It is something that can be implemented in a community to show that dance is for all, to get youngsters off the street and for them to express themselves in an open and constructive way.

After interval, was the arty interpretation of how Tik affects communities. It starts with a lady shrouded by smoke and above her looms a noose. The dancing is disjointed as a tik person would be, confused and not in control of ones body. All interwoven in a story that tells of the various forms of addiction and loss of a loved one.

The fluid dancing of the african inspired movement from the Kwa Mashu School of Dance was fabulous and speaks of the young people in this country and how they share stories with each other and the growing realization that they have something in common to share.

Lastly, the 'Couch' by Jazzart Dance Theatre showcased themselves with a breathtaking, quick, agile performance that had brilliant moves of various energies, shapes and form that disperse in the flow of the dance.

Like any live production, one really needs to be there to see it all come together. Words alone can't describe the body movements and expressions that make for this truly wonderful spectacle of dance.

It's on until Sunday at Artscape so these still a chance to see this year's performance. If you can't make it, put it in your calendar for next year and see something that you haven't seen before.

That 80's Show at Roxy Revue Bar - GrandWest

The media night at Roxy Revue Bar for That 80's Show was a full house. Catch this pop and dance show until the 30th July.

The cast was electric in neon, leg warmers, bangles and stone washed jeans. Quite a 'flash dance' ensemble that certainly knows how to take their passion to make it happen. As a personal plea please don't, don't, don't forget about 80's music and go to GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World to see a brilliant show that is a blast from the past.

The show started out with the classic 'We built this city on Rock 'n Roll'. It was from start to finish 80's mania with songs such as Paul Simon's 'You can call me Al'. U2's 'Where the streets have no name', Cindy Lauper's 'Girls just want to have fun' as well as more serious renditions such as Lionel Richie's 'Hello - is it me you're looking for... I want to tell you so much 'I Love You'. These and other classics lines were brought back to life by the talented band and performers.
'Now, we are going to have a party, starting tonight'. I had the time of my life, singing along to songs I haven't heard for ages with the likes of Stevie Wonder (Ebony and Ivory), The Police (Roxanne), Queen (I want to break free), Wham (Club Tropicana), Madonna (Material Girl) and other chart topping tunes.

For me the best song of the night was Foreigner's 'I want to know what love is' and powerfully performed. The closing song was Tina Turner's 'Simply the best' which was sung along by the whole audience for a standing ovation. This show was simply the best, better than all the rest that I've seen at the Roxy Revue Bar thus far. For a fun filled, laugh-a-minute night out, this one is for you.

Pussycat Doll Tribute Show at Roxy Revue Bar GrandWest

The Tribute Show to the Pussycat Dolls - Doll Domination is at the Roxy Revue Bar GrandWest until the 28th May.

It is a Burlesque style show with a female cast consisting of Candice Michelle as the main singer and 4 dancers (Michele La Trobe, Nicoll Pitt, Clellind Fivaz and Simone Mann), choreographed by Darren Greeff.

The opening of the show is a touch raunchy with the song 'Loosen up my buttons'. The next dance routine is a Rumba style 'Strictly come Dancing' and they do it like pros. The costumes are edgy, sexy and grungy, so it's not just lingerie, showing the best of these performers who have both guts and talent.

The Pussycat Dolls have been criticised for their overly sexy dance moves and covers of original tracks with Nicole Scherzinger singing all the songs but there is no denying that these girls have got what it takes to become famous.

The tribute to their 2005 Debut Album with songs such as Donna Summer's 'Hotstuff' and 'Don't Yah' ... wish your girlfriend was hot like me... got the audience singing and dancing along. The dance routines are physically demanding but they do it with effortless ease.

The Pussycat Dolls have done the sound track to songs in Charlies Angels, Sharks Tale and Slumdog Million. The breathtaking tribute to 'Ji Ho' with an Indian dance routine shows that these girls can dance a range of styles. For me it was the highlight of the show. Followed by a bowler hat routine in black and white, and lastly cute pink outfits that these 'dolls' don with style.

If you think you can dance, think again because by just looking at these girls, they can. They have the flexibility and subtleness that's easy to watch and enjoy. So, get your girlfriends together and have a fun night out.

Yolanda Y'awa 'CrossOva'

Yolanda Y'awa first solo cd album launch 'Crossova' was a huge success. Held at the piazza at the Cape Quarter Lifestyle Centre it was the perfect setting for a stunning concert. We were treated at Voila to Peroni drinks and snacks from Cafe Cru. Luckily for us the restaurants that surround the piazza had front row seats.

The concert started with township dancers doing a gig and three gorgeous muses dressed to the nines. This set the scene for an energetic and modern / eclectic performance . The outfits were amazing and gorgeous. So much thought was put into the design that it was a fashion show in itself. The colourful, exciting, vibrant fabrics brought out the personalities of the performers. There is obviously design talent. Yolanda then appeared on the stage in an outfit with a pussy cat bow in a mix of green and red, with striped legging and red shoes. She is enigmatic and talented with a larger than life personality.

The Gugulethu tenors accompanied her with sounds of joy and a song of happiness. They way these guys can sing is so beautiful. Their operatic voices filled the piazza that if your closed your eyes your could be in Rome.

So they say; when in Rome, or in this case Africa, do as the African's do. Yolanda got the crowds on their feet doing a type of 'diski' dance. I'm not sure what it is called but it makes everyone from mama to child to move one's body.

Yolanda 's songs are inspired by heart-felt lyrics. She has gone through her trials and tribulations but remains a pillar of strength, inspired to excel as a creative and is a light for her loves and joys. Her songs 'Be Free', 'Forgiveness', 'Rejoice' reveal a message of hope.

Her album has a distinct African feel, with memories of Brenda Fassie, a big personality and beautiful strong voice. She is not shy to say that she is a child of Africa and for that I applaud her. She is accompanied by a band that is equally talented and plays a range of sounds to bring out the best in this creative performer.

The evening couldn't get better, having won the raffle for a custom-made shirt from Vogel & Aitken - extraordinary shirts for extraordinary men. We were also given a goodie bag to take home with Wild Olive soap and a signed copy of her album which I played in the CD player of my car on the way home.

The 2011 International Ice Hockey World Championships (division III)

The 2011 International Ice Hockey World Championships (division III) which will be held at The Ice Station, GrandWest from 11 to 17 April. This is the second time in the last ten years that South Africa has hosted this event so we are very proud that The South Africa Ice Hockey Association (SAIHA) are well prepared be do so again.

Six countries; Greece, Luxembourg, Turkey, Israel, Mongolia and South Africa will compete in a round robin tournament. The sponsorship of The City of Cape and Provincial Government have made this event possible in conjunction with GrandWest.

This tournament is not just about winning, its also about the team being role models to international tourists and to encourage locals to take on sports such as Ice Hockey. The dream is for youngsters all over Cape Town, in what ever means possible, to drive down Vanguard Drive to GrandWest and enjoy the excitement of indoor sport. To take part in physical exercise rather than sitting playing computer games have benefits to mind, body and soul. Our players are here to show visitors a good time by introducing them to our beautiful mountains, beaches and winelands.

Provincial government as custodians of tax payers money are putting their contribution to good use. This is not just a once-off and they will continue in partnership to grow the sport. Hopefully in the future there will be live coverage of the event and Ice Hockey too will get their fair share of air time that other sports such as cricket and rugby receive.

The team is ready and in top physical form. Most of the players have overseas experience with only two rookies on the team. The selection process was intense, taking place over 8 weeks, ultimately choosing the very best players in the country.

Cirque du Soleil Saltimbanco

Cirque du Soleil will enthrall and delight you...

If you are lucky enough to have tickets to go to Cirque du Soleil, good for you!, because they are pretty rare to find at this stage. I was fortunate enough to be invited and attend the backstage rehearsal of the opening show followed by the live performance in the evening in Cape Town on the 23rd March 2011. And there is so much to tell.

The Rehearsal

While at the rehearsal, the performers on the gravity-defying Bungee and Vers multicolores (Multi-coloured Worms) on the Chinese poles were practicing their moves with technical expertise and seemingly with the utmost of ease. All was carefully orchestrated under the watchful eye of the co-ordinator with safety a key priority. This is a circus, but a very organised one for adults and children.

The behind-the-scenes tour of the preparation from the masks, to makeup and costumes was impressive. To see what goes into putting on a production of this scale and with such detail was an honour.

The masks are incredibly intricate and beautifully made. Each mask is made specifically to the character of the performing artist. At first glance they seem identical, but a closer look reveals they uniqueness and individual identity. The artists themselves prepare for the show and apply their own makeup using a step-by-step guide with pictures to help them complete their look. Getting ready for a night out on the town pales in comparison to this complex and colourful preparation! It takes approximately 90 minutes for each artist to apply their make-up. The nicety is that each performer is supplied with their own Mac makeup box - a makeup artists dream come true!

Clothes designers would equally be impressed. The costumes are brightly coloured, eccentric and eclectic. There are racks of costumes neatly in-line in different colours. Stripes is a recurring theme, but there are all the designs, fabrics and textures you can think of, each labeled with the name of the performer. There are embellishments of every shape and size; buttons, ribbons, pom poms to add the 'je ne se qua' to each outfit. If anything needs to be sewed or fluff to be added it is done here. There are hundreds of custom-made shoes, different sizes and in every colour of the rainbow, which are touched up before each performance. The characters are not just dressed in costumes but are fashioned according to each character as it emerges in the show. The makeup and costumes transform these individuals into quirky, funny and interesting looking artists.

The Live Performance

In the opening scene The Baroques run around the audience in a comical and haphazard way, running around and engaging with the audience, hurrying people to take their seats. They speak an invented language (made up specifically for the show derived from various languages including Arabic, Swedish and German). The set design is instantly striking, lighting the stage as it would through a stained glass window reflecting that anything is possible.

Saltimbanco in Italian "saltare in banco" literally means "to jump on a bench" is a representation of the urban fabric of the metropolis and its colourful inhabitants. With an international cast of 51 performers and musicians from more than 20 countries. The mood is baroque which is a style characterized by dynamic movement, overt emotion and self-confident rhetoric. The show's eclectic cast of characters draw you into a fanciful, dreamlike world in an imaginary city where diversity is celebrated.

The Characters

The Baron; ageless and timeless, is the guide to this world who recounts fascinating tales of the past. The Baron thinks he has power but really has no authority; he is the king of fools. At his most carefree the Baron loves to party with the Baroques who are enlightened beings with free spirits and run wild.

Eddie; the child within us all, is a jester or clown who finds adventure in his own imagination. He engages with the audiences using mime to act out the story through body motions without the use of speech, with a hilarious result.

The Dreamer; lives between reality and illusion, is like a clown, and is responsible for looking after The Child who is at the heart of the family. He is always ready for a nap but rarely gets the chance to doze off.

The Ringmaster; likes to be the centre of attention and often steals the show. With his winning smile and natural charm he usually gets away with it, strutting proudly around the world.

The other interesting characters include The Cavaliers, La Belle, Vers multicolores and Vers Masqués (Masked Worms) each with their own story told through expressive performance.

The Acts

Interwoven into this intricate fabric of this imaginary world are the various acts. The acts include: Adagio which is a show of strength, flexibility, balance and grace; Artistic bicycle that will boggle the imagination; Juggling with sheer speed in an unforgettable show of rhythm; Boleaddoras with exploding sounds to dance steps; the Russian swing catapulting meters in the air; Trapeze in a display of stunning aerial ballet of sheer harmony and beauty; Hand-to-hand duo pushing their bodies to the limits of human strength.

Combined with the original music, the sounds and lyrics create an atmosphere that's ethereal yet baroque, rhythmic and cosmopolitan, which is totally in sync with each act. 10 out of 10.

Imagine if we too can cherish a crazy dream to take our Cape Town Minstrel Carnival around the world with our brightly coloured garb, carrying umbrellas and playing an array of musical instruments.

It took someone like Guy Laliberté who was so intrigued by the colourful street performers striding on stilts, juggling, dancing, breathing fire and playing music to draw the world's attention to the fabulous Cirque du Soleil.

Cape Winelands Film Festival 2011

The Cape Winelands Film Festival is an event that takes place on a yearly basis. Now in its fourth year it is growing in stature. Held at the impressive open air Oude Libertas Amphitheatre, we were treated to Zonnebloem wine and an abundance of delicious canapes followed by the opening film for the festival; Reconciliation 'Mandela's Miracle'.  

Leon van der Merwe is the passionate organiser of the event. As the organiser of this non profit organisation he has met the challenge of continuing to hold and fund this event. Paul Mashatile, The Arts and Cultural Minister was there to show his support and to say that this festival has the continued support of his cabinet. In terms of job creation this growing sector cannot be ignored and will in the future be a big contributor to gross domestic product.  

The Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism for the Western Cape, Alan Winde, spoke about the investment into the film industry such as the completed Cape Town Film Studios where "Judge Dredd" is currently being filmed. The small film-maker was not forgotten and workshops will be held for burgeoning film makers to show them how to make films, for example on their mulit-media phones. Not only is it about international productions but also about getting in touch with real South African stories and showing the world who we are and what our proud culture stands for.

  The guest list was impressive. These are the people who have fought and were prepared to die for the ideals they believed in. Truly inspirational to be in the company as these comrades and icons. Albie Sacks (Former Judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa between 1994 - 2009) and Eddie Daniels (imprisoned at Robben Island for 15 years and befriended by Nelson Mandela). Their ideals are present in the constitution to this day and which will continue to live long after they are gone. Along side were dignitaries from as far as Japan, Egypt and Brazil as well as honoured guest and Member of Parliament, Mandla Mandela, Mandela's grandson.

  Thanks to the many sponsors that make it possible to continue this festival and to showcase these pertinent stories to South Africa. Reconciliation is a story to be told and remembered for future generations. Based on Mandela's life story it is a documentary style film with original footage of The Rivonia Trial, his release, the Rugby World Cup, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and other important reminders of South African history. Interviews with the heros of the day were interwoven with scenes from the blockbuster "Invictus".

Last year was equally enjoyable where we saw Athol Fugard's "Master Harold and the Boys" at Spier Amphitheatre. I must mention that this film was the most moving film I've ever seen in South Africa with moments of happiness and intense sadness with an over-riding tendency to reconcile differences.

To get a taste of these professional and well-acted films is an absolute pleasure. The excellence in film production delivers a quality product comparable to none other than our international acclaimed Cape Wines.

Hansa Legends in the Making

Hansa Legends in the Making Event Dates have been released. In Cape Town on the 6th & 7th May it's an event that will get the crowds going. Tickets can only be won so listen out on your local music stations and on Hansa Pilsener beer bottles.

Now that the formalities are out of the way, I'd like to tell you about our night out at the Marimba Bar at the Cape Town Convention Centre for the launch of the Hansa Legends in the Making Tour.

Hansa pulled out all the stops. We're introduced up close and personal to two of the Acts that will be performing on the tour. JR "Make the Circle Bigger" and Teargas "Dark or Blue". Later in the evening the gave us a taste of what to expect and performed live at the event.

JR is an immensely talented rapper and grew up surrounded by music and driven by an insatiable hunger for the next best beat. He has performed along side some of South Africa's hottest talent such as Die Heuwels Fantasties and the Soweto Gospel Choir as well as International talent, John Legend and Keri Hilson on their nationwide South African tour. Other special performances have included the Sunset Concert at Kirstenbosch Gardens. His sophomore album, Colourfull earned him a second SAMA for Best Rap.

Teargas is a group of three like-minded individuals from Soweto. They are inspired by South Africa's political past where police used Teargas to disperse crowds which is incorporated into their music to disperse socio-economic crimes such as crime and poverty. Their party songs have got the attention of veterans in the music industry like HHP, Prokid, DJ Tira, Danny K, Selaelo Selota and Busi Mhlongo. Their album went Gold in 2010 and since they have launched their live DVD in association with Channel O. They also received the award for best group at the MTV Base Awards 2010.

These up and coming hip hop artists are bringing the underground hip hop scene above ground. These 'cool cats' have the drive and ambition that will take them places! Their edgy sound is a mix of lyrics and hip hop integrating into a beat that pulls people together. It's a unifying, party experience with a top quality performance. Other artists that will be performing include DJ Deelou, Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP), Kwela Tebza, Ntando, Tuks and Liquideep, well known for the chart topping hit single Fairy Tale.

As Hansa Pilsener puts it "Every legend has a special ingredient which makes him or her exceptional". Nobody recognises this better than Hansa Pilsener, the beer with the special ingredient of the Saaz hop. They've chosen these special individuals and groups and given them the platform to show South Africa what they are made of. Here's to a great tour.

Riverdance at GrandWest

Riverdance is an innovative and exciting blend of dance, music and song. Drawing on Irish traditions, the combined talents of the performers propel Irish dancing and music into present day. The fusion of Irish dancing with such diverse styles as Flamenco, American tap and Russian folk dancing captures the imagination of audiences across all ages and cultures.

Act 1 depicts a primitive and powerful world with the performers coming to terms with the world and themselves.

The female dancers in their green dresses provide a traditional scene and line dancing as its best. Their male counterparts are equally talented giving an edge to the performance.

The solo dance of "The Countess Cathleen" shows the power of women as they celebrate themselves and challenge men in a dance of empowerment.

The Riverdance Flamenco in my opinion is the highlight of the show. She is so beautiful, strong and graceful. This Spanish influence infused into the show adds the necessary spice.

Act 2 embraces a new kind of courage as the Irish emigrants enter a new world.

The scene is set with vibrant dresses that move in a dance of colour. The emigrants find that through expression they are greater than the sum of their many diverse parts.

The addition of two American tap dancers adds excitement. Their style is less uptight than the traditional Irish dancing which is challenged in a show-down of dance and rivalry. The moving of the American vs Irish feet seems to come naturally, even seemingly out of control, but always choreographed perfectly.

The final scene gives its all with the ending timed to perfection . Ni neart go chur le cheile, together we are strong.

I'd like to voice one comment that I was not as moved as I had been 10 years ago having seen the original performance. Perhaps I had preconceived ideas or perhaps its my African'ness that tends to favour more tribal (less folk-like) performances with raw energy and passion. Personally I would love to see African style performances on this grand scale on our shores.

Big Concerts did us proud with bringing this performance to South Africa that was well organised in an arena that was easily accessible.

The show runs until 27 Feb at the Grand Arena at GrandWest Casino. Prices range from R194 to R399 for a two hour performance and R60 for a full colour brochure.

Funky Town at Roxy Revue Bar GrandWest

For a fun and fresh show, Funky Town, is a must see. The style of the show is Jackie Brown and we boogied to wonderland. When the revolution was brewing in rhythm, its leader was James Brown.

So, all aboard the night train and enjoy funk, gospel inspired soul. You won't be able to control your feet ...

Bell bottom jeans dominate with sneakers, sparkly tops, disco balls and flashy lights. This sets the scene for a super freak show that is highly entertaining.

Funk is a blend of soul, jazz, R&B and dance. The songs are uplifting and inspiring in the same way reggae was. When you want to blame it on the sunlight, or blame the moonlight rather blame it on the boogie.

The mood turns somewhat slightly serious with ballads of love "Cherish the love we have" beautifully sung and performed. But the mood is not serious for too long, and another tune is belted out with "I'm coming out, I want the world to know, I've got to let it show".

Whatever song sung and tune played it had to be funky. This boogie is for real. In the days that this music was popular people used to worry about the future, but as the song says, "I threw caution to the wind and there was nothing left for me to do but dance". In tough times, they danced their blues away.

Truly inspirational and relevant to today where you can be what you want to be, but with the overall theme of or you need to do is get that boogie down.

The show features a nine-piece band and talented musicians fronted by vocalists Keeno Lee, Cindy Gibbons and Matthew le Roux. The band consists of Lee Gelderbloem on keyboards, Michael Horne on drums, Morne Smit on bass, Lorendo Brown on lead guitar, Lee Thompson on trumpet and Marc de Kok on saxophone.

Make Cape Town the funkiest of towns by showing your support for Funky Town at the GrandWest Roxy Revue Bar and enjoy a light-hearted night out. R67 gets you in. Tickets are available at computicket. The Elvis Tribute Show

“Ladies and Gentlemen, Elvis has entered the building”. James Marais, director, producer and performer of the ‘Elvis Tribute Show’ at the Roxy revue bar, delivers an entertaining and impressive impersonation of the King of Rock ‘n Roll. Its easy to see why he is considered the best Elvis impersonator in SA. He has all the dance moves, coffiered hairstyle, flashy outfits and of course, the deep silky voice which had us singing along to the King’s hits, that even my daughter knows so well. I was very impressed by his backing singers Monique Cassells and Jacky Hort. Hort in particular showed off his vocal range with a few non-Elvis hits from yesteryear including "My Way" and “Bridge over troubled water”. The two energetic dancers, Nicoll Pitt and Claire Schrickker, added a lively touch and the six piece band, Mafia, rounded off this polished and professional show. I can recommend this trip down memory lane with the King of Rock 'n Roll.

Spring Symphony Season

Last night we went to the Spring Symphony Concert at the Cape Town City Hall. At night from the Grand Parade one can see the magnificence of this historic building with the lights adorning the facade.

The concert was a delight and the music beautiful. Talented musician filled the hall with orchestrated music with perfect timing and precision.

Mariangela Vacatello performed a piano recital of Beethoven with skill beyond belief. The keys are recalled from her memory to produce amazing music. The orchestra accompanied her with violins, cellos, base, wind instruments and of course, the triangle and also portrayed a rendition of Brahms.

She will be performing again at Endler Hall on Saturday with a Bach Italian Concerto amongst others.

The Show Must Go On!

Last night we attended the Media launch for the Queen Tribute Show at GrandWest's Roxy Revue Bar. The Roxy Revue Bar is an intimate theatre that is adorned with murals and an overhead chandelier. We were very comfortable for the show to continue.

The show gives tribute to Queen as the rock band as well as the softer side of the band with their beautiful ballades that make up Queen as we know it. We rocked and couldn't help sing along to songs such as "Find me somebody to love”, “Radio Gaga”, “I want to ride my bicycle”, “We are the champions”, “Under pressure”, “I want to break free”, “We will rock you”, “Who wants to live forever” and many more.

Cedric Vandenschrik as Freddie Mercury brings his character to live along with his band members. The band consisted of drummer Mike Horne, bassist Morne Smit, guitarist Donovan Hattingh and on keyboards Lee Gelderbloem. The beautiful and talented songbird Candice Thorne completed this musical cast.

The Show must go on! The resilience that Freddie Mercury showed in his life choice and his desire to overcome adversity through his song writing is awe-inspiring.

He is truly the queen of rock. We bow down to him.

The Fugard Theatre is an architectual masterpiece. Converted from an old church, this Theatre is an inspirational icon of hope where artistic dreams can be fulfilled and enjoyed.

My wish is that this type of establishment is frequented by younger up & coming generations. There is also a bar where you can relish in a glass of red...

Look & Feel Good Expo

On a lazy Friday I went to the Look & Feel Good Expo at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Samples galore as per usual. I received an amazing new body wash called Imperial Leather which I haven't seen since my London days. I chose the Japenese Spa limited edition range which has notes of green tea, rice mike and jasmine. Divine!

Now, just to book a Ginkgo Spa treatment with the voucher I received to complete the experience. (Ginkgo biloba; in Chinese and Japanese 銀杏 ) - it sounds like being taken to a complete state of wellbeing and restfulness.

What I've found so far is that there are so many great things to experience in Cape Town that will no doubt restore my zest for life.
