Yahoo has introduced a new Home Page. The main difference from the current Yahoo home page is that users can now customize the page with widgets/apps from third parties. Some apps have been pre-created by Yahoo and others. And others can be added as well, Yahoo will make the app based on the URL you supply (they don’t say it needs RSS, although I’m not sure how they create it on the fly without it).

The key change, besides personalized content, is the removal of the tons of links to scores of Yahoo services. Most people only use a handful of those services, says Yahoo, so it’s better to let users decide which ones are present and take up screen real estate.

Yahoo also says they will be letting users sync up the customizations between their mobile and desktop versions of Yahoo starting soon.

Bing is a new Microsoft search engine all ready to challenge Google in the lucrative search engine space. Apparently Bing has been quietly launched a few days earlier from the announced launch and is in preview and beta mode in various countries.

Google is doing its best interference, launching Wave on the same day as Bing, and incorporating easy wins into its engine.
Having said that, there is a chance that this could at least prompt consumers to think about how they use search engines, and kickstart the realisation that search at the moment isn’t perfect by any means.

As you progress through a marriage, or any committed relationship, routine is bound to dictate a lot of what happens. As the glitz and glamour of romance subside, daily schedules, obligations, kids, and chores take over.

Routine becomes such a factor in life that I’d be willing to bet you could accurately predict your spouse’s schedule of interaction with you throughout the week. And they could do the same with you.

Life is often lived predictably because when you get right down to it, you’d rather live life in your comfort zone than step out into the uncertainty of true life and relationship design. Change is scary. I get it. But change should not be debilitating. It pains me to say this, but many people will choose unhappiness over uncertainty.

If you’d like to break out of the routine and change a few things in your relationship, it’s easier than you think. Here’s the secret ingredient: a touch of spice.

Start small. Break a few of the patterns and see what happens. I think you’ll be surprised at the results.

1. Change up the seating chart at meal times. If your family has sit down meals together, there is probably assigned seating that has evolved over the years. Dad sits here, mom there, and so on. Try sitting in a different seat.
2. Give up your chair in the living room. This same seating principle applies to TV watching furniture. I have a recliner that is assumed by my family to be mine. Give it up and sit on the couch or some other chair for a while.
3. Sleep on the other side of the bed. Same principle, perhaps a bit more closely guarded however. Try it. See what happens.
4. Assume different household responsibilities. You may be the one who takes out the trash, does the dishes, or laundry, puts toys away, or maybe all of the above. Try doing something you typically don’t do during the week. Mow the yard. Make the bed. Whatever. Just do something your spouse would usually take care of.
5. Ask your spouse out on a date. Actually call them up. Ask them out. Dress for a date. Show up at the front door. Bring flowers. Hold the door for them. Who knows where this idea could lead.
6. Have a good make out session. Not every physical connection must lead to sex. Spend some time making out with your spouse. Kiss each other slowly. Enjoy each other. For added spark, try this during a movie at the theater, or outside under a tree.
7. Talk about your unhappiness. I’m a big advocate for honesty. Too often we expect our spouse to read our mind or sense that there’s something wrong. Speak up. Tell them what’s going on with you. A word of caution however. Tell them what you’re feeling and thinking, not what’s wrong with them. Anyone who feels attacked will respond defensively and be less open to seeking solutions.
8. Initiate sex. Inevitably routine will creep into your sex life. It’s his responsibility to initiate sex. Or hers. It’s brought up the same way. Starts the same. Follows the same routine. Even ends the same. If you are the one who initiates sex the least, initiate more. If you’re the other side of the equation, slow down. More than likely, you both would enjoy better quality sex rather than simply more sex.
9. Try eyes open sex. Sex is the one time we can be closest to another person physically while staying miles apart mentally and emotionally. If you typically keeps your eyes closed while kissing, during foreplay, and during sex, open them up. Engage your lover throughout the encounter. Look them in the eye. Let them see you.

Majority of us still use Windows XP (Why? - you would know that). Many us still drive mouse pointer crazy to do simple task in Windows XP (Why? - this is only way we know, probably). Here is the list of 10 Windows XP Keyboard shortcuts you may not know:

CTRL + Shift while dragging the item - Creates it shortcut.
CTRL while dragging - copies the selected item.
ALT + Enter - Displays properties window of the selected file.
SHFT+F10 - Displays the shortcut menu for the selected item.
Windows + U- Displays the Utility Manager.
Windows + D- Immediately show the desktop screen.
Windows + Break - Display the System Properties Dialogue Box.
Windows + F + CTRL - Search for computers.
F4 - Displays the Address bar list in Windows Explorer or My Computer.
F10 - Activates the menu barin the active program

You can for sure start using some of the above shortcut keys to do stuff quickly. Here is list of Windows Keyboard shortcuts you may have been using and should continue to use:

We never bother to check if Windows Vista or Windows XP installed on computer is 32bit or 64bit version. However, bells ring when you need to know exact version to install any specific program or for any other task.

32bit or 64bit? It is not difficult to check on the exact version of Windows on your computer. Following are few simple steps to check on this:

For Windows Vista - Method 1

Click Start, type system in the Start Search box.
Then lick system in the Programs list.
The operating system appears as follows:

For a 64-bit: 64-bit Operating System appears for the System type.
For a 32-bit: 32-bit Operating System appears for the System type.

For Windows Vista - Method 2

Click Start, type system in the Start Search box.
Then click System Information in the Programs list.
The operating system appears as follows:

For a 64-bit: x64-based PC appears for the System type under Item.
For a 32-bit : x86-based PC appears for the System type under Item.

For Windows XP Professional - Method 1

Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
Click the General tab. The operating system appears as follows:

For a 64-bit: Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version <> appears under System.
For a 32-bit version operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version<> appears under System. Note is a placeholder for a year.

For Windows XP Professional - Method 2

Click Start, click Run, type winmsd.exe, and then click OK.
In the details pane, locate Processor under Item. Note the value.

If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with x86, the computer is running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system.
If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with ia64 or AMD64, the computer is running a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system.

I have 32bit - will 64bit be a better option? The main differences between the 32-bit versions and the 64-bit versions of Windows Vista relate to memory accessibility, memory management, and enhanced security features.

Increase U R PC Performance by increasing Page File Size

This tutorial will show you how to speed up Windows by increasing the page file size. The page file, or virtual memory, is a space on the hard drive that is used to store data for temporary to use. This is similar to the way RAM works, only the data is store on your hard drive instead on a memory chip.

First right click on My Computer and select Properties.

The System Properties Window will be displayed. Take note of the amount of RAM your computer has. We need this later.

Now click on the advanced tab and then click the settings button.

The Performance Options window will open. Click the advanced tab.

Go down to the Virtual Memory Section. This will display the total page file size for your computer. Click the change button to modify this.

As you can see below, my page file is set to be between 1524 and 3048 MB. To optimize this we will adjust the initial size to be twice the size of our physical RAM.

Since I have 1GB (or 1024MB) of RAM I will increase the initial page size to 2048MB. I will add another 1024 MB and set that as the Maximum size.

Once you have made the changes click the set button and then click OK.

That is it. You have increase the page file size (or virtual memory) on your PC. This should help speed things up a little bit. I wouldn’t recommend increasing this to be more than double the size of your RAM.

Create QUICK LAUNCH ToolBar "Show Desktop Icon"

If you use your Quick Launch toolbar, you will know about the show desktop icon. It is an icon that shows the desktop when you click it(it minimizes all windows, and if you click it again, puts them all back). The show desktop icon can be a great help when you are working with a lot of windows. It allows you to minimize them all at once. You can delete this icon and not be able to get it back. This tutorial will show you how to make a Show Desktop icon that you can put anywhere, including your quick launch toolbar.
First thing we need to do is right-click on the desktop and select New-> then click on Text Document. This will create a notepad document on the desktop and allow you to name it.
Name the file whatever you would like for now as we will be changing it later. I named mine Ha.txt.
Next, double-click on the text document to open notepad and copy or type in the following lines: [Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
Now, go to File->Save-as to open the save screen.
This is the save screen. In here we need to change the “Save-as” type to All files.

Next name the file Show Desktop.scf and then click on save.
You should now have the above icon on your desktop. Next, we need to make sure your computer is set to show hidden files and folders so that we can put this file in the proper location to get it to appear in the Quick Launch task bar. You ensure that you can see hidden files and folders, you are ready to continue.Right-click on our icon and select cut.

(C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch).

Next browse to the above folder, changing “Administrator” to whatever your user name is. If you are logged in as the admin, then the above path will work.Once you are in the Quick Launch folder. Right click on a blank space within that folder and click on paste.
You should now see the Show Desktop icon in your quick launch bar. Thank-you for following this tutorial and I hope it was easy to follow.

To Avoid this error in Windows XP: “you may be a victim of software counterfeiting”

After installing your genuine copy of Microsoft Windows XP you are prompted with a “Your software is counterfeit” error message at startup. Even after visiting the www.microsoft.com/genuine/ site and validating, you still get the above message popping up after 2 or 3 boots. There is an easy solution to this and I would like you to follow the steps below to fix the issue.

1. C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files

* Within that folder, remove any files or folders associated with .WGA

2. Safe Mode

* Reboot your computer and as soon as Windows logs off, start repeatively tapping the F8 Key on your keyboard.
* As soon as you see the Windows Advanced Startup options select Safe Mode within Safe Mode get yourself into these folders…
* C:\Windows\System32 (Rename wgatray.exe to wgatrayold.exe)
* C:\Windows\System32\dllcache (Rename wgatray.exe to wgatrayold.exe)
Note: Dllcache is a hidden folder, to view hidden folders do the following, go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options,
Select the view Tab and under the Hidden Files option, select Show hidden files and folders

3. Safe Mode Registry

* Click on Start, Run and within the open dialog box type regedit and click OK.
* Within the Registry Editor navigate your self to
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WGALOGON
* Right Click and Export the WGALOGON Folder (this should be saved onto your machine for backup purposes)
* After Exporting the folder, DELETE the WGALOGON folder
* After deleting close all applications and Restart your machine back to Normal Mode

4. www.microsoft.com/genuine

* Get into the site above and manually re-validate your copy of Windows.
* After being prompt of a successful validation, Restart your Machine.

Get U R Website Indexed By Search Engines

This post is going to be review for the great majority of webmasters, but I am still seeing people on forums asking questions about this topic so I am going to cover it.

Some people ask…

Should I be submitting my website to the search engines to be included in their search results? How can I make sure that search engines find my website?

The major search engines all have a page where you can submit your website for inclusion in their database. Google’s is here. Yahoo’s is here. MSN’s is here.

Those submission pages should work. But, to be honest, I never use them. Whenever I create a new website, I just link to it from another website and I get indexed in the major search engines within a few days. The process is sometimes even quicker than that.

Now… On the subject of linking… You should always link to your website with your chosen keywords. Use the keywords that you are trying to target in the anchor text of the actual link. For example…

Don’t link to http://www.newrss.net.

Link to Market Your Website.

Both of those links point to the exact same website. The difference is that the first link will help me rank better for my URL. Not very useful as I should be ranking for my URL anyway. The second link will help me rank better for the keywords “market your website”. If I want my website to show higher in search engine results when someone types “market your website” into a search engine, then that is the way to try to accomplish it.

There are many ways to obtain links (also known as backlinks) to your website. Some are free. Others are not.

You can submit your URL to paid directories. Pay for inclusion directories would include Yahoo and Aviva Directory.

You can also submit your website to the thousands of free web directories out there. There literally are thousands of them. This is very time consuming, but economical as the submissions are free. Do a search for free web directory and get started.

Forums are also a great way to start getting backlinks to your website, especially webmaster forums. You can put a link to your website in your forum signature and get posting. Forum signatures are usually not live until after 10 or 20 posts or so. The great thing about this idea is that you get to meet a lot of really great webmasters and learn what you can about SEO while getting some links to your website to help you get indexed by the search engines. Forums are also a good place to buy links on other webmasters’ websites.

One last thing… If you want to check to see if one of the major search engines, use the site: command, like so.
