Glad to have had my shoulder surgery over and no longer needing thearpy, which took up all my spare time! But even more than that, I am glad I am no longer taking pain pills and steriods because all those extra pills are hard on a post gastric bypass surgery stomach! Having the weight loss surgery helped me get rid of a lot of prescription pills ... thank goodness!

I know it has been a while since I have posted but I broke my arm 3 months ago and the recovery process has taken up all my extra time. Now I just found out I will have to have surgery on a torn muscle that occurred during the same fall :-(

During this whole time, I have been taking pain killers in pill form and have gotten a couple doses of steroid packs ... tough on any ones stomach but extra rough to someone who has had gastric bypass surgery. After this last steroid pack I had heartburn/acid ingestion for a week AFTER I took the last pill! The doctor believes it is all because of my gastric bypass surgery and that has sped up his decision to use surgery to fix the tear.

If the subject ever comes up and I tell someone I have had gastric bypass surgery, there is a pretty good chance that a women (and it is always a women) who does not have a serious weight issue, says "Oh, I should get that, I am getting so fat!"

That kind of statement makes me so mad! It is as if gastric bypass surgery is the new diet craze but here is the catch, you can not turn back! This is a lifestyle change, it is forever and it is not for the average person looking to lose 20 pounds!

This is no joke .... the paperwork, the stress tests, actual surgery that takes recovery time and a year of slowly adding foods until you can go back to eating most everything. I had the surgery over 4 years ago and I still have to think about what and when I eat. It was totally worth everything because it saved my life but you have to know what you are getting yourself into!

Since gastric bypass surgery became a household name in extreme weight loss, it seems like everyone is trying to use the name to sell totally unrelated weight loss products. I have seen different pills and drinks that make your stomach smaller "like gastric bypass but without the surgery" but my new favorite name stealer is Gastric Band Hypnosis! That's right, for $50 they say they will convince your brain that you had the surgery, haha! I didn't believe it was real either, till I went to their website. Check it out HERE

More and more celebrities are pushing weight loss surgery in the limelight by have the procedure themselves but I was still pretty surprised to hear New York Jets coach Rex Ryan had lap band surgery. I guess the surprise has more to do with his profession, I mean he does coach professional athletes for a living! Of course alot of stigmas have changed for men in sports since Jenny Craig started using famous sports figures on their commericals to show weight loss results!

So here I am 4 years after my Gastric Bypass Surgery and I still think it was the best choice I ever made! I have however put on about 15-20 pounds from a combo of the holiday food and lack of exercise, so I have started a new year diet! As I have stated before on this blog, the surgery alone is not enough to stay thin forever, it gives you a jump start but you still have to watch what you eat and exercise to keep it off!

I am trying a low carb diet for the first time since I had the surgery and I am not 100% sure how I am going to do, wish me luck! I also have low carb blogs which I will be updating with recipes while I am dieting, check them out:

"im 18 and have not had the gastric bypass surgery yet. but i do have a appointment to meet my surgeon and dietitian on tuesday. ive been thinkin about getting this surgery for about a year now. n im ready for the life change it has to come with it. but honestly ive been really thinking about it. and im scared. i mean i really want it done to live a better life but im scared. ive had surgery before but it was for a cyst on my ovary. is there any advice u could possibly give me so i wont be so scared for this procedure"

Gastric Bypass is a big surgery and a life changing one at that, it should be considered fully! I was scared too but finally had become more scared of not having the surgery because of all the medical problems I had from being overweight as well as the embarrassment and general problems associated with obesity. It is a painful surgery (in my option) but I would do it again because I feel that much better!

Nothing you say to someone will ever take away being scared of the actual surgery, I mean it is still surgery, there is always a risk! The only thing that will help to calm you is researching your surgeon, search online first but when you are face to face with the surgeon, ask him/her what their mortality, infection and need for follow up surgery rates are. They are tough questions to ask but a good surgeon will set your mind at ease. Also research the heck out of every aspect of the before, during and after of Gastric Bypass Surgery so you know what you are in for.

The concern was that by bypassing some of the stomach you no longer absorb nutrients and vitamins as well as before and would make being pregnant very difficult. A lot of people tend to think that gastric bypass surgery is an easy way to lose weight and you can eat whatever you want following the surgery. I think gastric bypass surgery was the best thing that ever happened to me but it is a life changing event that you should be fully prepared for.

First of all, you will not be able to have your full diet back until a full year after your surgery and there is always at least one food you love that will make you sick every time you eat it….I still can not eat pork chops and creamy soups! Immediately after gastric bypass surgery, you will be on a liquid diet of water, broth and juice for two days. You then progress to pureed foods (like apple sauce, yogurt, pudding, liquid meal replacements and eggs) for about a month while your stomach heals. Then you progress onto easy-to-chew foods, cooked vegetables, soft fruits, and ground chicken and fish.

Red meat is very difficult to digest, even when ground, and should be avoided until at least a year after weight loss surgery. Other foods to temporarily avoid following surgery are spicy foods (six weeks), fruit and vegetable skins (six months), carbonated beverages (six months), and bread (one year).

After gastric bypass surgery your body will have difficulty absorbing certain nutrients so you will need blood tests to determine what vitamin and mineral supplements you need. Through this whole process you need protein-rich foods to help your body recover from the surgery, so many protein shakes and bars are consumed.

After a year you can incorporate your whole diet back into your life but that still does not mean you can eat what ever! You have to watch your combinations of foods, make sure you are getting enough protein and eat healthy foods.

I saw this article on my homepage today, it is not directly about gastric bypass surgery but it is about how much money we would save if we were not overweight. The article says that if Americans all lost the 20 pounds that we are overweight (on average) that cars and airplanes would save $5 billion in fuel due to their lighter loads! It also says that overweight people use 18 additional gallons of gas a year, that is like filling up your tank two times more just because you are overweight! I am sure glad I had Gastric bypass surgery and am no longer so overweight!!

Okay, here is something that I haven't thought to ever ask my dietitian after my gastric bypass surgery .... Can I eat raw oysters? I used to enjoy them every once in a while before my weight loss surgery but have not had them in the 2 years since! I thought about it for the first time while I was in Key West enjoying fresh seafood and saw it on the menu. I am going to ask but until then if any one has had any experience with this please leave me a comment!!!

I saw this piece they did on the news about how 1/3 of gastric bypass surgery patients are too obese to fit into the CT machines to check for problems post surgery. It made me kinda mad because they kept making it sound like the gastric bypass surgery caused this problem! That is something that is talked about before the surgery and is a part of it, as far as the weight, they would not be having the surgery if they did not need to desperately lose weight!
