Book Review: The Colors of Blue by Lance McCulloch

Having tried my hand at writing a novel I can truly appreciate the work that Lance has put into this book. I never got as far as he has and for good reason, it is a lot of work!

I believe he has talent, although this edition is rough around the edges. Throughout the book you will find typos, syntax and printing errors. As someone has already commented on, it could have used a more refined touch with the proof reading before publication. The dialog is a little shallow and much at times and the transition from one scene to another was a little jolting for me at times. Once I actually had to put it down as it was becoming too, too much jumping from one place to another. That was more in the front of the front though; around the 9th chapter.

That said, I enjoyed reading the novel. The characters were genuine and believable. I came to think of Sarah as a friend, watching vicariously as she was thwarted in her relationship with Rick by several characters in the book only to triumph as she and Rick rediscover love. Emotionally it triggered feelings of first love, even though they had each been in love before.

The setting contains many elements that resonate with me; mountains, horses, fishing, hiking, all invoking a feeling of peace and well-being. I felt it was given the most attention to detail and I was able to visualize myself there. A wonderful backdrop to a budding romance.

My greatest surprise was that a man could write such a sensitive novel so well. I believe the fact that it was written by a man though was a redeeming factor for me. It kept the novel from going to the gooey place other romance novels go. (yes, I know I said I do not read them, but I have read their jackets and I have had friends that feel the need to share the books they read with the intent of trying to convert me. The result is only to make me avoid them all the more.)

As an avid reader, I have read the early works of many authors and I have found them to be rough around the edges at times and yet those authors have gone on to become very successful. Some that come to mind that I have read are Robin Cook, Dean Koontz and Robin Hobb. I can foresee, with help and persistence, how Lance could be able to join those ranks.

If this book is fleshed out a little more, transitions from one scene to the next smoothed out for a better segway and a little more attention given to editing, it could be more of a gem than the uncut stone that it is at this time.

I was given my copy of the book by the author. I told him I AM NOT a romance novel reader. This is as close as I have ever gotten to reading one. I avoid them as they generally have no interest for me. I enjoy a good Sci - fi, fantasy fiction, thriller, or drama. I agreed to read this book with the understanding that I was not a romance reader, but would give it a try as I was intrigued by the element of colour used by Sarah. It gave her character an element of fantasy, an intriguing twist reminding me of a novel I read by Brandon Sanderson. Sadly I felt this was not developed as well as it could have been. He still sent me a copy though. :)

Bottom line, I enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it to others.

To quote Lance, "Although a romance, this is a story of love, loss, and discovery, told in a unique way and married with the beauty of nature. It is an emotional journey of the human spirit."

I could not have summed it up better.

Lunch at Newman's Deli in Reno, Nevada

This last trip to Reno my sister treated me to an afternoon of special moments, starting with lunch at a cute little place, Newman’s Deli, located at: 20 California Avenue, Reno, NV 89509, which is right of So Virginia St.

To one side is FedEx/Kinkos and on the other, just across the street, is a Starbucks.

Upon walking inside I could not help but notice the quaint retro feeling of deli; linoleum floor, 50’s yellow kitchen walls, retro style tables and chairs; all very nostalgic. Photos of Baseball players from years gone by cover the wall as well a an occasional picture of other sports icons.

I believe I have never seen a menu with quite so many items though. It made my head swim so I let my sister choose.

We split a Turkey Bacon Tomato Melt; Oven Roasted Turkey Breast, Bacon, Tomato, Mayonnaise, & Tillamook Cheddar Cheese served on white fluffy bread. Not sure exactly what they called it but it looked similar to French Bread. I am not big on white bread but it suited the sandwich.

The turkey breast was a generous portion, fresh and flavorful. The cheese was delicious, blending well with the other ingredients.

The sandwich was a little on the greasy side though, which might be expected due to the melted cheese.

Half of the sandwich was 11 weight watcher points, so not exactly a sandwich I could eat on a regular basis.

My sister said she was disappointed in the sandwich and wants to take me to a different deli on my next trip. She chose this one because she had heard good things about the sandwiches.

I personally liked the sandwich, was very impressed on how quickly our plates were gathered up when we finished, was not impressed with the lack of interest the staff expressed to us as customers, but I did enjoy the vintage atmosphere. In my opinion the price was reasonable as well.

John Carter of Mars

So Psyched!! Yesterday Lace, the boys and I enjoyed 2 hours of Sci-fi heaven watching the new John Carter movie.... in 3D!!

When I bought 2 copies of the latest Tron movie I received 2 tickets to see John Carter. That helped a lot with the costs since 3D tickets here are now $12.00.

I felt that the movie was very well done, lots of CGI, good acting, chemistry between actors was there, the aliens looked lifelike, lots of action scenes, some romance and a play on emotions (one scene made me cry when John Carter was remembering the death of his wife and daughter.)

I came home and searched ebay for the books so I could read them again. Should have known, the prices were all jacked up with everyone trying to capitalize on the current interest.

So I searched and found some free versions on Amazon Kindle; only the first 5 of 11 books though.

I thought the production was excellent with a nice balance of interest for men and women, and the story line stayed fairly true to the book. Although it has been a few years since I read the book and my memory is less than perfect.

In conclusion, I highly recommend the movie. Just remember it is based on books almost 100 years old and you may not be as jazzed as I was.

Weight Watcher Journey

Jan 8 began my first journey into the world of dieting. While the thought of doing so played occasionally across my mind, the catalyst that inspired the act was twofold; I had reached a point in my weight gain that I was experiencing sharp pain in my abdomen while typing on the computer something I do for several hours a day. I also had reached a fulcrum point in my wardrobe; lose weight or buy a new one.

Slowly over the past few years as my weight climbed steadily higher and I found my wardrobe dwindling as I culled and re-culled my clothing, donating the discards to charity, the thoughts of dieting had crossed my mind. This year all that was left in clothing choices were my larges and a few XL items that really were cut more on the L side. All of which were becoming tighter and tighter. Several of that size had already been culled due to the unflattering look of my spare tire and/or the fact my arms no longer fit comfortably in the arm holes.

As a result I found myself talking to my daughter in law about weight watchers. I knew she had bounced back and forth with the program so she showed me how many points I was consuming just in my breakfast alone; a meal that is the same day after day. From there we covered different meals I might choose to make.

This was an eye opener for sure. I had always thought rice was a healthy addition to meals. Then I discovered 1 cup is 5 points, add that to the oil and the chicken points and my meal was an easy 10 points or more. When 26 is your limit for the day that is not so good.

There were many more examples like that in my diet so I checked into joining, but was put off with the the26.00 join up fee. Were they nuts? 26.00 just to join an online program??? Then there was also the monthly fee. So I waited. Enter Jennifer Husdon her “Believe” campaign for WW brought a waiving of the 26.00 fee and I joined.

I have not regretted it.

In the first week I lost 2 lbs. Exciting, but I told myself that could have been water loss. The second week gave me cause for excitement because I had lost another 2 pounds. Sunday begins my 8th week and I have lost weight each week with the exception of one.

This week has been my first week not to tap into the Points Plus Allowance. I get 49 a week and they have been a life saver. I am looking forward to my weigh in tomorrow morning as the scales are now registering another weight loss.

At the beginning of this week I felt the first inkling of how great it felt to have the weight off. I feel more energized, sexier. I have lost 3 inches off my waist and I could see the curve of my waist again. It was such a good feeling to be tightening my belt instead of letting it out.

I started at 161, according to my scales, 163 by my daughter in laws. I used my scale weight for recording purposes since that was the scale I would be using throughout this process. Today those scales say 149, 12 pounds!!

Not sure if it shows to others, I see it in my face and really feel it physically.

The left photo was taken on 1.05.12 and the right was taken on 2.22.12. Still have a ways to go, about 15 more pounds.

Tess Gerritsen; The Sinner

I entered the world of Tess Gerritsen recently and discovered the multi-faceted talents of this author.

The first book I chose to read of hers was “The Sinner”. I found it a fairly quick read and was able to finish it in a short amount of time.

I have tried to analyze what it was missing to draw me into its heart and cannot come up with a clear cut reason. Possibly it is because I am still until the cloud of Robin Hobb, an author who has the ability to draw me deep into her worlds so much that the characters become as though real.

Possibly I do not find the characters and their world three dimensional enough. It is wrong of me though to compare a fast read book with a novel. That would be like comparing a Honda Civic to a Jaguar.

"The Bone Garden", a book I have just begun to read by Tess will give me more of a sense of her writing style. So far though, it could not be farther in form from “The Sinner”.

“The Sinner” is a murder mystery, set in a current timeline. Two nuns are brutally murdered, as well as a man and what appears to be a homeless person. Three different venues, but all connected. Tess slowly connects the dots with the aid of her character, Dr. Isles, the local ME. The closer Dr. Isles gets to the truth the more her life is in jeopardy.

“The Bone Garden” jumps between current time and the early 1800’s. So far the only similarity is that the two books are murder mysteries. We shall see as the plot unfolds.

The one con I found in the first book that might give me pause to continue venturing into more of her works is that I felt “The Sinner” border lined on becoming a romance novel; a genre that I am not drawn to.

Had it not a greater percentage of the mystery aspect I may have not picked up the second book.

At this time I would encourage the reading of Tess Gerritsen’s books though. They are a fast and enjoyable read. The plots also have twists and turns that add the element of surprise.

Book Review: Brandon Sanderson, "Warbreaker", Jeffrey Deaver, "The Vanished Man"

Got a twofer book review:

I recently finished my first book by Brandon Sanderson, “Warbreaker”. I had recently received this autographed copy from my beloved daughter-in-law. This was a SciFi edition published by Tor. I mention this only because the construction of the book was so inferior. In the front and the back two large sections were not glued. When I got to those sections I had to extract them and glue them in before I could finish reading as the pages kept falling out. I was also quite disappointed in the cursory spell check this copy was given. The grammatical errors were higher than in any book I can remember having read.

That aside, I found the novel interesting, not riveting, but interesting. If I had not just finished 9 novels by Robin Hobb; a writer that not only draws you into the worlds she creates, but deftly plunges you into those worlds so deeply that the air you breath is the air she has created; I think I would have found Brandon’s book definitely more tantalizing.

He paints a world where colour is primary; either the absence of or the vibrancy of, either way colour controls the lives of the characters second only to the amount of Breath one has. Both of which symbiotically affect the lives of all.

I would definitely recommend reading this book and I hope to read more of Brandon’s works, just not so close to the heels of Robin Hobb novels.

I use drive time to get through other novels. It fills that void created when dead space hangs heavily in the air and the guilt of not utilizing my time efficiently eats at me. My latest conquest in the oral book world was a novel by Jeffery Deaver, “The Vanished Man”.

The twists and turns are made all the more suspenseful because I needed to wait until my next drive to find out what happens.

Set to a background of the world of illusion, Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs use their mental prowess to try to get ahead of an master illusionist who is committing bizarre murders for reasons of vengeance that only could make sense to him.

There is a reason Jeffery Deaver is called the “Master of the Mind Game”. I no sooner thought I had the plot all figured out and it would do a 180.

This is my first read from him and I am sure it will not be my last.

I whole heartedly recommend this read to anyone who enjoys the challenge of surprise endings.

Goodbye Whitney, 2.12.12

A Fan; an ardent devotee, an enthusiast, also short for fanatic.

By definition I am not a fan; of anyone.

I do however; find some artists worth taking a moment to enjoy, to reflect on and to appreciate.

Whitney Houston was one of those artists.

Her songs made my heart light and my soul soar.

To hear her voice was to be lifted in spirits.

It saddened me to hear of her death.

The world has lost a bright light.

Archiving and Fav Icons

I spent a majority of the day finishing up on archiving my blogs in Word. Last night I came across an article about someone whose blog got shut down for what he says is no reason. I read the thread where he tried to resolve it with blogspot to no avail. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about, had quite a following and had been blogging for some time. I went to the blogspot address he had and the blog is still inactive.

It gave me a little scare as I have so much info that good never be retrieved; journeys, school lessons, events etc. So I started copying every entry from each blog into a word doc. I have also resolved to create every new entry in a word doc and then copy and paste it into my blog. Then I will save the doc on my hard drive.

What I did not get done last night I finished this AM and then began searching for the information I needed to learn how to create a feed for my blog. Not sure why it seems so hard. Others have it up and running on their blogs.

I finally found some info and have inserted the HTML code into the design of each blog. Hmmm we shall see.

Also changed the fav icon, this too we shall see as it does not show up immediately.

All of this is a step by stumble process for me.

Robin Hobb and "City Of Dragons"

Today’s email contained a message I have been waiting some time for.

Robin Hobb’s third book in her Rain Wild Chronicle series will soon be released. I bought the first two but have been waiting until the rest come out before I begin reading. Based on previous experience I did not want to be hanging some time to see what happened.

My journey into the worlds created by Robin Hobb began June 2011. I was visiting my grandson and had forgotten to bring something to read. Although I have always loved to read I had foregone (with a few exceptions) any extensive novel reading. Having 4 little ones running around for several years prevented me the kind of immersion reading I enjoyed. They grew up, but so much time had gone by I had gotten out of that style of reading, then life happened and I never motivated myself into reading like I used to enjoy. But….. I always carried a little something, something… until that fateful trip.

But never fear my daughter-in-law was there. She pulled a book out of her extensive library that she thought would be right up my alley. I grimaced, a female fantasy writer. Nah, I don’t think so. They had so far failed to entice me fully into the worlds they create.

Although I have enjoyed reading Jean Auel and Diana Gabaldon novels. (the latter lost me though, when she started putting 4 years between novels. So much time went by I would have had to re-read everything to catch-up)

Knowing that I enjoy sci-fi, suspense, thrillers (not horror), and some fantasy my daughter-in-law insisted I would like this book.

THAT was an understatement.

Robin Hobb has 5 trilogies and I read 4 of them between June and Dec.

The first trilogy I tackled was The Farseer trilogy.

The second trilogy was the LiveShip Traders trilogy.

The third trilogy was the Tawny Man trilogy.

The fourth trilogy was the Rain Wilds trilogy.

These four trilogies, although independent stories, are interwoven with commonalities.

The fifth trilogy stands apart, a different world, different characters; it is the Soldiers Son trilogy.

In 7 months I read those 12 books as well as “The Inheritance” which is a compilation of short stories written under Robin Hobb and her other pseudonym, Megan Lindholm.

The Inheritance was a revelation to me in the fact that I had never experienced reading such diverse works by the same person.

The examples in this book left me feeling that Megan writes in a two dimensional format and is crude while Robin is four dimensional, articulate and mesmerizing.

I would never buy a Megan Lindholm novel. Yet I own 5 of Robin Hobb's trilogies.

The only dampener of this latest release, City of Dragons, is that the Rain Wild Chronicles still has a final book in the series; due to be released next Feb, 2013. So my elation of this release is tempered.

I will buy this latest though, set it aside with the other two and wait…

I had forgotten the exquisite pleasure of complete immersion into a good novel. Becoming part of their world, seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling all that goes on around me. The ability to travel to different times and worlds, meet so many people and cultures…

Until next spring though, I will be reduced to scouring for my next immersion fix.

Robin Hobb is truly a writer that can accomplish that.

Well, It is over. Melanie Amaro won!

I did not post the past couple of weeks for several reasons. Really busy with orders was one reason but the main reason was the loss of Rachael. It crushed me when Drew was voted off, but Rachael... I just could not rationalize that one.

I continued to watch, of course, but my heart was no longer in it. If Chris would have been voted off I probably would not have even watched. I could have caught the highlights online.

Congratulations Melanie!

I begin this entry with apprehension and dread. Yahoo has already leaked the bad news. Drew is gone. :(
I am till not sure who the other one is but will know soon.

At this moment I do know there will be no probably or might, it is a definite no to ever watching this show again.
It is rigged.
I do not know how it is, but I have ideas on how it could be.
Whether people have been paid to vote for certain contestants or whether some of the calls are not counted correctly, something is wrong.
I suspected it early on, in light of astro's continued reign.
It is the only explanation for Drews being voted off and his staying.

It is hard for me to continue, I have lost my enthusiasm much like one would with any event that was rigged.

It does not matter how much talent these young people have, the winner will be whoever the powers that be choose to win. Right now the golden boy is astro. So sad, this show could have been a really fun show to continue watching in the years to come.

Oh well, shake myself off. I should never have expected more.

Wow!! I love the opening number. Drew was adorable, Josh is getting out of his box, Chris I just love your singing whatever it is, Marcus that smile, (you are just too darn cute), Melanie you are amazing, astro interrupting, rude and .. forget it not worth the keystrokes, Rachael -- whoa you are loosing weight!! You are just such a ray of sunshine.

Yeah Steve I really want to download that song to listen to a interupt Melanie while she sings. Uh huh gunna git right on that one..........................not.

Sweet Drew, what a beautiful smile. My heart is hurting.
Hmm in watching the recap of Weds show I realize I missed a lot speeding through it and not listening to the judges comments. Those girls were really dogging on Simon then. What gives? I might go back and watch it through without the fast forward. I was just in such a strap for time.

I am trying to understand how the judges can tell each one of the competitors that they are the best. What gives. they all can't be; the most original, have the most chance to win and be the best of the show, come on now get real guys, these are human being with feelings.

Well, now I understand a little more why a is still in. That act, Tinie or whatever made my head hurt. Had to Fast forward. Could not understand a word he said, He kept jumping up and down like a bouncy ball that lights were flashing none stop. Just not my cup of tea. Wrong generation I guess.

I think Josh is better but I did not think that he would be the one.

And he took it like a pro and not a spoiled brat. Maybe this competition has had some positive effects on him.
I hope so, because I am sure he will be signed on by someone and having an attitude will not get him far.
He actually looked personable and cute! He had a smile and was not quite as cocky.

Drew is not going to be able to sing. She is way way too emotional.

Steve is one of the most callous mc people I have heard. Asking people how they feel at a moment like this. He would be the reporter that asks a young mother how she feels after seeing her child die. Can he be for real?

Wow it really is dog on Simon tonight. Why is Paula so upset with him I just replayed this section 3 times to be sure and I am. When Steve asked Paula what she thought, she told him and then turned to looked at Simon, gave him a I am gonna get you now smile, sat back folded her arms and then turned with a big smile and looked right at Nicole, who looked like she was trying to ignore it all. Simon looks like he knows already what she plans on doing.

Drews voice is so awesome, her heart is just gone out of her singing now. Her lips are trembling when she finished. Poor girl..

Marcus you little cutie, so polite.

I think Drew did better singing her save me song, but Marcus has a lot more enthusiasm.
At least that is my opinion.

Paula you are lucky you can't see the looks Simon is giving you. He knows what your going to say and he is not happy.

Are you getting even with him for something he said or did? hmmmmmmmmmmmm -- A woman scorned perhaps???

He is really not happy did not even want to make a statement.

He is truly amazing in his self-control. No tantrums no ugly words(at least not on national tv), just strength. Although you can tell he is seething.

No wonder so many people like him.
I find him quite manly, not my type but manly all the same.

In some ways I am glad I knew ahead of time. I would have been so crushed just to find out without warning.

This was an emotional episode.
I am truly sorry to see you go Drew, all the more so because I do not think it was from lack of talent, more from pettiness.

X factor 11.28.11 Number 18 - Double Elimination

It is hard to believe almost a week has gone by without a blog entry. The entries have been written in my mind and on scraps of paper but they will have to wait.

My days have flown by as they have been so busy and filled they have just run together. Today I was up and running and just now, at 11:30, have I sat down to rest. I enjoy having so much to do it is exciting, fulfilling and gives me a feeling of accomplishment, but I miss having the time to write.

But nowwww ouch! Sorry, cat attack. He blindsided me, only little scratch though. As I was saying, now is another XFACTOR!!!

This weeks theme is Michael Jackson. They better be good because you don't mess with the King of Pop.

First up is Josh. Right off the bat I can tell this is not his genre and he was right to feel uncomfortable with it. That said he handled it well.

Second is astro. He sounds the same.

Third is my Drew. A little slow, but very soulful. Was not the best showcase of her voice. Billy Jean is a song I prefer sung faster, but I still love Drew.

Fourth up is Rachel. That girl has energy plus!! I have grown to adore her. I do not recognize the song, but she gave it a good go.

Fifth is Marcus. He has definitely improved the most over the past weeks. His performance has been the most in harmony with tonight theme. I think anyway.

Sixth is Chris Rene. I spoke too soon Chris is also right there in the theme. Chris I always enjoy your performances. You have a way of blending genres and I really enjoy it.

Seventh, last but by no means least, Amaro. Wow!!! You really looked like a STAR tonight!! You go girl. Great job!

X factor 11.23.11 Vote Night

The show had fantastic strong start with Kelly Clarkson's new song "Stronger"

As the vignette's flash by of last nights performances I can not help but reflect on feeling I had. In particular LA Reid's criticism of Drew.

Why does he dislike her so much? His criticism each week has been about things that would all totally apply to his golden boy, brian.

Simon might respect him and be glad that he is here, but I think LA is closed minded to all but what he likes.
Little brian was just as megalomaniac as always. What is he going to do when he gets voted off?
His sound last night was not his best, (does he have a best?) I guess so he is still here, but not to my ears.
LA must have prompted him to the max to be more humble and less a spoiled brat. Everyone, in my opinion, is enabling him justify his socially unacceptable behavior.

I keep trying to hear what everyone else hears in him and I fail, I horribly fail.
He is my first choice to leave tonight.

My second choice is not a choice; it is a matter of triage and having to arrange my greatest likes to my lesser likes. It saddens my heart to make this choice, but it would have to be Lakoda Rayne.

I was feeling a little more than frustrated yesterday because I had made the decision not to be critical of the contestants and then brian came out. So I surfed to see what the scuttlebutt was floating out there about him and did not have to search long or far to discover I am not alone in my feelings about him. It is obvious that there is more to this show than talent. Politics have their nasty little hands in the cookie jar as well.

I just went to the X factor site and was going to make a statement about all of this. Should have waited, saw who lost the sing off and also realized, too late, this is just a show. It is not worth getting so upset I run and complain about it. I was naive to think it would be fair. Need to just enjoy the decent talent that is left and ignore the plain wrapper they kept when they threw the delicious steak and cheese out. (no pun intended)

Marcus that was not a very strong song for the sing off, but since you won, what do I know?

Leroy, you did a great job on the sing off. Good song, thank you for sharing your talent. I am sincerely going to miss you.

Looks like I was not the only one who thought Leroy did better in the sing off. I just finished watching the judges decision to see how that went. Nicole looks as sad as Paula did. It just hurts my heart.

The tension is mounting, I have my coffee and remote in hand so let the show begin.
The final 9 give their thanks: God, family, best friends, and fans.

Only 1 gave thanks to fans, people who only love you when you are "IT".
(you can only guess who the megalomaniac was who gave thanks to their fans)

Nicole and Paula were stunning, of course.

First up is Sweet Rachael Crow from Colorado giving thanks to her family.

Tears pooled in my eyes as a smile filled warmth and joy spread across my face.
Her mother and Simon showed similar feelings as well as pride.
I have to keep reminding myself that she is so young.
Her voice, her kindness, politeness, thankfulness is so beyond her 12 years.
Nicole called her a bright light, she is so very true in that statement.
Paula called her an angel on earth.

Marcus Canty you have truly grown on me. You are loving, kind, moral and your love and respect of your mother touches me deeply.

Leroy Bell from Seattle Washington is thankful for his mom. His mom is gone, almost two years now. Seeing the early pictures of Leroy is strange because he has not aged in looks only in years.

Josh is so versatile! He plays piano, guitar, sings and now I hear he writes songs and released a song just before the X Factor competition.
He is also seems to be so warm,and genuine.

A common thread I have seen so far with most of these contestants is a drive, a love of life, a thankfulness for what they have and those who are there to love and support them.
Almost each one has someone who saved them in some way, by giving them the desire to aspire to their dream.

Tonight I give no negative criticism, although I con't stop thinking of it, I choose to save it for tomorrow.
Tonight will shine as a night to be thankful.

My husband and I have begun to notice that almost every news report begins with who was; shot, killed or attacked in Stockton.

Tonight the reporter began her report by stating that Stockton is only 1 murder away from a 1992 record. Woo wouldn't you like to be famous for that??
They have had 54 since the beginning of the year, 49 of which have been committed in the last 6 mos.

So I decided to see how bad they were nationwide. What I found out was it is worse than I thought;

According to the 24/7 Wall St. blog, Stockton made number 10 and Oakland number 6.

According to an article in the San Fransisco Chronicle, Mayor Jean Quan has attempted to combat break-ins and theft by creating programs to keep potential wrongdoers off the streets by starting late-night basketball programs. At first I wondered why Stockton had not made today's article then I realized the article was not about a most dangerous city, it was about cities where violent crimes were soaring. Cities where crime was escalating. Stockton isn't escalating like that, crime is just a fact of life there.

Stacey you did good. What a trooper! Song was a good choice showed a lot of your vocal range. You definitely have much more vocal talent than Astro.

Astro you are just too full of yourself and so predictable. Nothing new. What a suck up song.

I am not sure if I want to watch next weeks, maybe I will just catch the results from the next days news.

PACIFIC COAST SLAVIC BAPTISTS ASSOCIATION SOBER HOUSE

A mailman can be a wealth of information if he will stop long enough to share. This day I was gifted with a moment or two and learned that a house at the end of the street was bought by Pacific Coast Slavic Baptists Association and has been turned into a Sober House.

Wow!

That was not all. He said to check out last nights news. I did. The house has only been opened a short time and the report was about one of the getting sober people slipping out one night recently and attacking an elderly man across the street. Then they interviewed the man running the house and he had a "don't give a care" attitude. Isn't that just fantastic?

Many Rio Linda people got together to try to get them ousted but to no avail. Looks like we have gotten a better reason to keep our gates locked. Our little bit of sanctuary from the outside world has just gotten closer to what we are trying to avoid.

I guess it could be worse, it could have been a drug rehab, but either way I just do not understand how they can plop something like that in the middle of the neighborhood without notifying the other residents.

Last week was movie week. Tonight is Rock Week and first up is Leroy. LA reid says he is boring. Hey LA are you feeling threatened? heheheheh

Leroy sang a soft rock song, and really delivered. LA, of course, dogged him. So did Simon, but Simon did it in a critique way LA was just mean.

Rachael is doing one of the Rolling Stones hits, "Can't get No Satisfaction" She was on top of her game. A little toss of her head, a wink of her eye and she drew the audience to her. Yeah Rachael.

Chris Rene is doing a Bob Marley song this week. I think I remember the song, Bob Marley was not one of my favs. Simon looked pained I think will wait to see what he says. I have mixed feelings about the performance. It felt all over the board. I still like Chris' though. Simon did not like the song choice for the week. He said it was reggae. LA said it was rock. I Googled it, it is reggae. Those two guys are always pushing each others buttons., but Simon was right. So far I have found him more fair and right on than I thought he would be based on all I have heard.

Stacy Francis is singing a song by Meatloaf. (meatloaf????) She always looks so sad or angry. Life must be really hard for her. If for no other reason I would not buy her records because she makes me feel depressed looking at her. I did not like the song she sang. It just did not sound right. The dress was not a good choice either and what is with the glove? A reversal of Michael Jacksons white glove. She was wearing one black glove.

A mid note, this is rock week right?? So far only Rachael has done a real rock song.

Melanie is singing a rock song by REM. Simon has his girls doing rock songs : ) BUT it is another slow soft song. What are the judges going to say to this one. We will see. It was a great performance but nothing over the top. LA just said "so not rock". Nicole did not like it. Paula said it was good but she wants to see her let go. Simon said call REM and ask them if they are a rock band or not.

The judges are brutal tonight, so said the mc, so say I. It is like watching a little cat fight to see who is going to dig their claws in the deepest. Do they do this to garner votes or are they really this mean to each other?

Josh is up next with another slow one. Don't recognize it. Oops! not slow! This is a REAL ROCK song.... finally. Thank you Josh. Good job. Even LA said so. :) He signed again. So fast I can't translate it. Tried though got vote then a scoopy sign and what looked like a sideways e then e - h. So vote _ _ eh. Hmm when I was googling to see if anyone had tried to translate it I came across a TMZ article about Josh's smoking and drinking. Seems the Dr. says quit the vices or quit singing. (explains his yellow teeth)
footnote: i would hate to be in the spotlight and have all my negatives laid out for all to see. I would not fair well.

Astro is next. Will LA actually have him sing a rock song ???? We will see. LA says a love song, ahh another slow one. AHHHHHHHHHH he is taking one of my favorite songs "Every Breath I Take" and crucifying it. A slow rap song. THROW UP ---- BARF This was by far THE WORSE performance I have seen since I started watching the show. Well, I guess I am outnumbered every one else likes it, the judges, the audience, are they grooming him to make money off him or am I just way off? Even if I am way off I still did not like it.
He is really cute though and I think it is neat he gets along with his "step pops" and that he thought of his sister before he left the stage.

Lakoda Rayne, a great group will be singing a Fleetwood Mac song. They surprised me. I think they did a good job on the rock song (yes they really did sing a rock song with a beat) After last week singing a country song and looking so comfortable with that I was pleasantly surprised. LA dogged it. Paula, I think felt they held back. Simon called it a mess. LA, who was dogging them is now defending them from Simon. Another moment where I think the dogging might be staged. Get America on the underdogs side.

Drew sings a U2 song, With or without you. I think LA has already made up his mind. He basically said so before the set. I was hoping to hear a little more rock beat, but it was a GREAT performance. Nicole was waiting for the beat to pick up to. Whoa I had to replay that. She actually cut off Simon BEFORE he finished his critique!

Marcus WOW! rock it baby! Each week he has done well, but not one of my favourites. This week he took on rock and did a Janis Joplin song and rocked with it!! I was impressed, thank you Marcus. Simon was not impressed the other 3 liked it.

Summary: Rachael gave the best rock performance of the evening. Josh was second.
I think Chris and Astro were the least rock in their performances.

My money is on Rachael Crow at this point, but the order of my preference for talent is; Drew, Rachael. Josh, Melanie, Chris, Leroy, Lakoda Rayne, Marcus, Astro, Stacey.

In the order of who I like; Drew, Rachael, Chris, Leroy, Josh, Melanie, Lakoda Rayne, Marcus, Stacey, Astro.

These are my viewpoints. I am painfully aware that it does not reflect the majority.

Well, we shall see what America thinks tomorrow.

After all that happened last week; a field trip to so cal on Mon, the neighbors Pit Bull tearing up my sons little Chihuahua(he survived) on Tues, home school class on Thurs, then my going out of town to see my grandson on Fri, I was going to forgo my personal thoughts on the 11.09.11 X factor, but I am here watching it and just can not sit here and not say anything.

Stacy you're not my favourite, but you sing well, whats with the Vegas hooker look?

Marcus Simon was right the jacket had to go, but you should have practiced that a little more. Also it took a little away from your performance when you sang a song an earlier contestant sang. It made me think of her, and that made me sad because I really liked her.. alot.

Drew I was not crazy about the dress, but I liked it more when I learned you had designed it yourself. It was good of Simon to allow you that freedom. LA reid should heed his own words. First he says you have a challenge ahead of you, you have to prove you can do more than just one thing. Then he says your really good, in a very condescending tone( my opinion),this week, last week and the week before and it is the same to him. He needs diversity from you, he needs to see you do something different all well and good but LA start applying that to your precious Astro, who could not sing anything but rap.

There seemed to be a whole underlying current of anti Simon. Everyone of the judges were dogging on him.
Yes, Leroy just finished and even when Simon said something nice they each took a turn at acknowledging it with a left handed compliment on the side.Hmmm, is this for show or is it real. Maybe.... well never mind.

Now on to Leroy. I really enjoyed your song tonight more than any of the other songs you have sung. You have such power and character to your voice. You just get better and better. I would buy your songs.

I needed a blog just to express my personal opinion and Erdkinder was not a comfortable place for that.
So here it is. Thurs night X factor began with a bang. Very well choreographed, the costumes were well thought out the singing was entertaining and then there was Astro. Have not seen the end but if he does not get voted off tonight it won't be long.

How is it that 11 other contestants blend to a theme, could be an entire concert onto themselves and he is the lone duck. Would it actually hurt if he was part of the whole event? If he were not so cute I doubt it.

My heart is pounding, it is getting harder to breathe, the mc keeps saying "in no particular order" Ahhh only two have been revealed then a break, ahhhh! (again) so glad I have tivo.

Wooo Hoo!!!!! yes Melanie there you are! what a great smile! Yeah that was what had him worried. Simon is smiling now.

Paula I feel for you. You are so amazing.

This show has really given insight to the mentors emotional side. Paula and Nicole seem to have deep feelings for their acts. It is heart wrenching to identify with them.

This was a hard decision for the judges I could tell. Intensity was voted to go home. Not my choice, but I am not one of the judges.

Whew! I that was intense!

Last week after the show I was perusing the X Factor site, do not now how I found it but there was a link to Chris Rene's twitter account. I signed up for an account a few years ago used it for a few minutes and never went back. Just not my generation. My dilemma was now I wanted to use it. So there I was digging through stacks of papers trying to find login info. I finally found it, logged in, made my comment and Chris Rene actually read it and commented on it. Talk about a natural high!! He made my day. I mentioned my age in the comment, stated how much I liked his performance and he treated it with kindness. Totally down to earth kind of guy. Maybe that is one of the reasons I am rooting for him. I have always felt that who a person is is as important as what they can do.

Kind of like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. So many people worship Jobs, but from what I have read he was a little narcissistic and yet Gates who has had more than one bad article written about him has more philanthropy in his little finger than Jobs had in his whole body. (not to speak ill of the dead. at least from what I know. if I am wrong, I apologize)
