No sign of major tsunami after Indonesian quake

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) — A massive earthquake offIndonesia's western coast triggered a tsunami watch for countries across the Indian Ocean on Wednesday, clogging streets with traffic as residents fled to high ground in cars and on the backs of motorcycles.

Two hours after the quake hit, however, there was no sign of the feared wave. Damage also appeared to be minimal.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 8.6-magnitude quake was centered 20 miles (33 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor around 269 miles (434 kilometers) from Aceh province.

"It wasn't the strongest quake I've felt," said 22-year-old Tuti Rahmi, while trying to reach her brother by phone from Banda Aceh, people around her crying and screaming as they poured from their homes.

"But it seemed to last forever," she said, adding the ground shook for nearly four minutes.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami watch was in effect for Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.

But hours later, the threat appeared to have passed.

Roger Musson, seismologist at the British geological survey who has studied Sumatra's fault lines, says the temblor was a strike-slip quake, not a thrust quake. In a strike slip quake, the earth moves horizontally rather than vertically and doesn't displace large volumes of water.

"When I first saw this was an 8.7 near Sumatra, I was fearing the worst," he said, noting one of the initial reported magnitudes for the quake. "But as soon as I discovered what type of earthquake it was, then I felt a lot better."

The tremor was felt in Malaysia, where it caused high-rise buildings to shake for about a minute, and in Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh and India.

There was chaos in the streets of Aceh, where memories of a 2004 tsunami that killed 170,000 people in the province alone, are still raw.

Patients poured out of hospitals, some with drips still attached to their arms. In some places, electricity was briefly cut.

Hours after the temblor, people were still standing outside their homes and offices, afraid to go back inside.

There were several strong aftershocks.

"I was in the shower on the fifth floor of my hotel," Timbang Pangaribuan told El Shinta radio from the city of Medan. "We all ran out. ... We're all standing outside now."

He said one guest was injured when he jumped from the window of his room.

Thailand's National Disaster Warning Center issued an evacuation order to residents in six provinces along the country's west coast, including the popular tourist destinations of Phuket, Krabi and Phang-Nga.

India's Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for parts of the eastern Andaman and Nicobar islands. In Tamil Nadu in southern India, police cordoned off the beach and used loudspeakers to warn people to leave the area.

Satheesh Shenoi, director of the Indian National Center for Ocean information Services, said the chance of a tsunami was diminishing.

"There are no indications of tsunami wave; the instruments are not showing any sea level change," he said.

The quake was felt in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where many people in the city's commercial Motijheel district left their offices and homes in panic and ran into the streets. No damage or causalities were reported.

In Male, the capital of the Maldives, buildings were evacuated.

Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.

A giant 9.1-magnitude quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, most of them in Aceh.

A True Story

My mom only had one eye. I hated her… She was such an embarrassment.She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.

There was this one day during elementary school where my mom came to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out.

The next day at school one of my classmates said, ‘EEEE, your mom only has one eye!’
I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted her that day and said, ‘ If you’re only gonna make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die?’ My mom did not respond…

I didn’t even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I was oblivious to her feelings.
I wanted out of that house, and have nothing to do with her.

So I studied real hard, got a chance to go abroad to study. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts.

Then one day, my Mother came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren.
When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I yelled at her for coming over uninvited.

I screamed at her, ‘How dare you come to my house and scare my children!’ GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!’
And to this, my mother quietly answered, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,’ and she disappeared out of sight.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old shack just out of curiosity. My neighbors said that she died.

I did not shed a single tear.

They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

‘My dearest son,
I think of you all the time. I’m sorry that I came to your house and scared your children. I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you. I’m sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up.
You see……..when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with one eye. So I gave you mine. I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye.

Recent Earthquakes Near Banda Aceh, Indonesia

An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 8.9 has struck under the sea off Indonesia's northern Aceh province.

The quake triggered a tsunami warning across the Indian Ocean region.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it was not yet known whether a tsunami had been generated, but advised authorities to "take appropriate action".

The region is regularly hit by earthquakes. The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 killed 170,000 people in Aceh.

The US Geological Survey, which documents quakes worldwide, said the Aceh quake was centred 33km (20 miles) under the sea about 495km from Banda Aceh, the provincial capital.

It was initially reported as 8.9 magnitude but was later revised down to 8.7 by the USGS.

The tsunami warning said quakes of such a magnitude "have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean basin".

The tremor was felt as far away as Singapore, Thailand and India.

The Thai office of disaster management said people along the west coast of Andaman province should heed warnings and evacuate.

Reuters reports that people in the region were making their way to higher ground, but quoted Indonesian officials as saying there had been no immediate reports of damage of rising water levels in Aceh.

The BBC's Karishma Vaswani in the Indonesian capital Jakarta says there were reports of the ground shaking for up to five minutes. Contact with people in the immediate area around the quake has not been possible so far, says our correspondent.

Indonesia straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of major seismic activity.

Tools Needed

Measuring cups
Measuring spoons
Fork
Griddle or a pan

Sweet Pan Cakes
Basic Ingredients
- Flour
- Baking powder
- A pinch of Salt
- A little sugar
- Milk
- Egg
- Butter (melted)
- Chocolate chips / Cocoa powder / Sour cream
Recipe

First take a bowl add up all dry ingredients measured correctly. The dry ingredients include flour, baking powder, salt and sugar (add cocoa powder in it too if you want to add it).

Sift the flour if needed so that you may avoid any kind of lumps in it. Mix all ingredients well. Make sure that you use the right quantity of baking powder or all of your cakes will be ruined.

Once done with dry ingredients it’s time to move to wet ingredients. These include melted butter, eggs and milk. First add up eggs and milk and the dry ingredients than add butter into it and mix thoroughly and fast, so that butter mixes in the batter well. Mix well but don’t over beat because that is going to make your pan cakes tough and too much beating will mix too much air into the batter.If you find few lumps after mixing the ingredients it’s fine but too much lumps means the batter won’t work well. Now when done with all the mixing you are ready to cook your pan cakes now. Heat a pan or griddle.

Grease it a little. Its better to use non sticking pan, as it will need you to use less oil. You can use butter, vegetable oil or even non sticking spray on your pan. Now fill one whole scoop spoon and pour it into pan in circular motion quickly. You need to do it quickly because it cooks fast and taking too much time will give you broken pan cakes from every where around.

Once you feel that the upper side is also a little cooked and no more wet, it’s time to turn the side of pan cake. Wait for the other side to become golden brown too. And finally you are done with your first pan cake. Now you have to repeat the same pouring procedure with all of the batter.
So now you’ve learned how to make sweet pan cakes, its now time for you to learn making salty pan cakes and more of you can call them pan cake rolls Isn’t it nice that you can make rolls out of pan cakes too and these may serve as good dinner dish.
Salty Pan Cakes
Ingredients
Flour

Baking Powder

Salt

Black Pepper

Milk

Eggs
Recipe
Add up all ingredients the same way explained for the sweet pan cakes. Once batter in being made make the pan cakes same way you made the sweet ones.
Rolls
For making rolls you would need mince (red/ white), ketchup, salt, red chili, garlic paste, oregano. Put all things into mince and put this on stove in a pan to cook. You won’t need to add water for getting it well cooked. Its own water will be enough. Wait till it becomes dry. Now but this in your pan cakes and roll them. You may stick the ends with the mixture of wheat flour and water. Now get back to pan and grill these rolls a little.
