Are you able to read Kannada? Yes? No?

Ok, if you cannot read it, then you read this article. So at the end of it, you will realize, YES to learn Kannada is so.... easy. :) If you know Kannada then also continue reading. You will be amazed by knowing interesting aspects about your own language. Look at Kannada from my perspective. Let’s start first with scripts. At the end, we will see few aspects of spoken Kannada and a popular Kannada movie

1 Kannada Script

Kannada script has so many curves. Tamil is more of vertical and horizontal straight lines like symbol ‘L’. Kannada is totally different. So people say they are JALEBIs. JALEBI is a sweet with a spiral shape, a shape of round round round round and full stop in the middle.

1.1 Omega

However, if you just carefully observe these JALEBIs, you will find one symbol is repeated again and again in almost all characters. Do you know what is that? Yes, correct it is ‘w’ (English lower case w) or Greek lower case Omega ω . Yes, Omega. This small Omega means angular velocity in physics. Add something to it, either at right hand side, left hand side, above it or below it, and you will find almost all Kannada characters. For example, just add English digit 7,2 or 9 at left hand side. ಬ It is ‘BA’. ब ‘BA’ for Bangalore. Sorry I mean Benglooru. You will find this symbol everywhere in our Benglooru. Now just add a Greek upper case Delta below it. Δ Delta is triangle. Even a vertical line will do, instead of triangle. ಭ Yes, now it is ‘BHA’ भ from ‘BA’. Put something at right hand side, ಚ you will get ‘CHA’. च Add vertical Omega to right hand side. Total two Omegas. ಡ It is DA. . ड Add Delta (vertical line) below it. ಢ So it become 'DHHA'. ढ Now remove the horizontal one, only one vertical omega. ತ It is ‘TA’ (‘THA’). त In north India, ‘TA’ is common for ‘TA’ (as in Kavita कविता ) and ‘TA’ (as in Rita रीता ). In South, people write ‘THA’ for the former one. Even instead of ‘Gujarati’ गुजराती , they write it as ‘Gujarathi’ गुजराथी. ‘Vinod’ is ‘Vinodh’ विनोध here. ‘Divya’ is here ‘Dhivya’!! धिव्या :)

Anyway, coming back to Omega. After adding, something in all directions, now let’s hang it. Like we hang clothes after washing them. You just hang it from middle. ಪ It is ‘PA’. प Add Delta (or vertical line) below it. ಫ Now it is ‘PHA’ or ‘FA’. फ Hang the Omega from both side. ದ It is ‘DA’ (‘DHA’). द Again add Delta. Where ? At bottom yaar. :) ಧ It is ‘dHA’ (‘dHHA’). ध Now, Let’s hang Omega from right hand side. ವ It is ‘VA’. व Add Delta? Nothing. :) Hang it from left hand side. Again nothing :) Ok so hanging business is over too. Now cover it from right hand side. ಎ It is ‘E’ .ए Now cover with Omega. ಐ Just observe them, it seems like the Omega looking at itself in the mirror located on top of it. They both Omegas are singing the famous Gazal of late Jagjit Singh.

"AAYANAA MUJA SE MERI PAHELI SI SURAT MAAGE
MERE APANE HONE KI NISAANI MAAGE."

It means even the mirror can not recognized me, It asking me for my old face and a proof that I am myself only. Understood? No. Yes Gazals are sometimes difficult to understand.

Coming back to this Kannada character. It is ‘AI’. ऐ So yes, thus few characters have two Omegas,e.g AI and DA. ಐ ಡ Still, Kannadiga like Omega so much they are not satisfied with just two Omegas. So ‘TA’ ट and ‘NA’ ण have total three Omega. Two verticals and one horizontal. For ‘TA’ ट the horizontal Omega is at bottom. ಟ The vertical omea is looking itself in the mirror and "AAYANA MUJA SE MERI....." :) Rotate this symbol, 180 degree ಣ and it becomes ‘NA’. ण

1.2 ‘U’ symbol ()

How about ‘MA’ म? ‘MA’ for me, Manish. Obviously, it contains…. Yes Omega (hung on right side). ಮ It is actually, ‘VU’. वु A symbol for vowel ‘u’, is added to ‘VA’. So it is ‘VU’. But no. In Kannada script, ‘VU’ is ‘MA’. Then how to write ‘VU’? Because, 'MA' has stolen symbol for 'VU'. Simple. Tweak little bit. Instead of right bottom corner, add ‘U’ symbol at bottom, middle to ‘VA’. ವು Yes, now it is ‘VU’. वु And this symbol for vowel ‘u’ is a real confusing. They add it to ‘YA’ य , still ‘YA’ remains ‘YA’ only not ‘YU’ यु !!! Here is Kannada YA ಯ For ‘YU’ यु it is added twice. ಯು For ‘ZA’ or ‘JHA’ झ, by default, it is twice. ಝ So how to write ‘ZHU’ झु ? Simple, a circle then keep on adding ‘u’ till you are satisfied. If you have added more ‘U’ symbol then, Kannadiga will do auto-correction while reading it. Simple. ಝು Try to write Zunzunwala in Kannada. What'e fun ! :) And yes, don't forget to add a delta (vertical line) below ZA/JHA झ.

Unlike Hindi, all Kannda vowels are three. Hindi we have two. like short 'U' and long 'OO'. Short 'I' and long 'EE'. Kannada has such vowels three. For third one they add '9' symbol . This symbol is added by that small kid of movie "Taare Zami Par". So it is vertically flipped. Once my friend did proof reading for my Kannada poem. He added vertically flipped '9' at many places. You too, after 'I' or 'U', if you feel and whenever you feel just add . Yes, now your Kannada script looks more like written by some Kannada literate person. :) So just Enjoy MAADI. And yes, Its width should be short. This same symbol you widen. ಲ So it is 'la'.ल Now put circle below it. ಳ It is 'LA' ळ.

1.3 Greek and Hindi

Not only Omega and Delta, Kannada script has few more Greek characters. Like ‘Pai’ π = 22/7 = 3.142. π It is ‘Ga’ ಗ in Kannada. Theta θ is ‘Th’ (‘Thha’) ಠ ठ.

Not only Greek, Kannda script borrowed few symbols from Hindi also. Hindi ‘YA’ य First the top vertical line, cap is removed. So now it is Gujarati 'YA'. ય Rotate it 90 degree, then it become Kannada ‘NA’. ನ Whenever I came across this symbol, first I read it as rotated Hindi ‘YA’. य Then I recall, Kannada ‘YA’ has circle (it is like a big tummy of a fat man) and it is actually ‘YU’. ಯ So this cannot be ‘YA’. Oh! Yes, it is ‘NA’. न. स ‘SA’ is simple. No confusion. Just rotate Hindi ‘Sa’ 90 degree. ಸ That’s it !! :) Hindi SHA ष has one inclined 45 degree (it is -45 degree, let me be more specific :) ). So Kannada SHA also has this inclined line. For Hindi we add it to symbol 'PA' प . For Kannada? Obiviously to Omega. Yes :) Look at it. ಷ . Hindi 'LA' ळ is also directly copy pasted to Kannada. However here it is not 'LA' ळ. In Kannada it is 'HA'. ಹ Anyway, Kannada 'LA' ಲ we just saw it, right? Add delta (vertical line) below HA. No sir. BEDAA. Everywhere this Delta logic is not applicable :)

1.4 Lucent Technologies

So now borrowing business from Greek and Hindi is also over. All kinds of operation on Omega is over. Adding Delta is over. Still first character of alphabet, that is ‘KA’ क is pending. Right? ‘KA’ is for Kannada. And ‘KA’ is for….Yes, you all got it. Just for shake of Ekta Kapoor, all Kannadiga put sincere efforts to find suitable symbol for ‘KA’. Once they visited Lucent Technologies. Lucent is my ex-employer. They just gazed at the red circle. Wow !! This circle is a nice symbol. Let’s hang it. A death punishment. So now it is ‘KA’. ಕ Gift it to Ekta Kappor. :) It is also English symbol I and O written vertically. In the universe, we find everything in pair. Isn’t it? Happy and Sad. Man and Woman. In our IT industry, Hardware and Software, Zero and One. So why death punishment to only one circle? (Lucent only? ) Let’s hang two such circles.(Alcatel and Lucent ) ಹ Now it is ‘HA’. ह 'HA' We have already visited as Hindi 'LA' ळ. Let’s put on a horizontal cap (line) on circle. ರ It is ‘RA’. र Now put a line in the middle of circle. It is Greek Theta θ ಠ means Kannada ‘THA’ (‘THHA’). Already covered. Let's extend this middle horizontal line on both side, add a hook to right hand side. This hook will prevent this line to come out from left hand side of the circle. :) ಈ This symbol is 'EE' ई

1.5 Practice MAADI

Now let’s read something. As you know, practices makes man perfect and women are born perfect. At least they believe so :) . So let’s read. ‘Benglooru’. No need to read individual character. You can remember it as single word’s single bitmap image. Where? Everywhere. At Railway station, airport, City-bus stop, etc. etc. So you can never forget how to write ‘BA’. Just Remember ‘Benglooru’. Add delta to 'BA' make it ‘BHA’. Ok, now other most popular symbol is ‘Shree’. Shree means wealth. Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth. In my parents’ time, kids were starting their study with this symbol. Hey, what is written behind auto-rickshaw? Without reading, say ‘Tande Tai Aashirwada’ (I mean ‘Thande Thai Ashirwadha’ ). 99 % of times, you are correct. It means blessings of parents. Even I found parent's blessing on Taxi too (a car with yellow number plate). Other vehicles? ‘Shree _________ Prasanna’. Now you know symbol for ‘Shree’. It is first word. Middle word, just read few characters and other assume it. The candidate Gods/Goddess for middle words are ‘Vinayaka’, ‘Manjunath’, 'Venkateshwar', 'Balaji' some xyz swami etc. Last one will be always ‘Prasanna’. OK now let’s read those yellow colors, low height address board. The number is already in English. So PARAVAH GILLA. Don't worry. After that, it can be either ‘main road’ or ‘cross road’. Why to read whole word? Just read first character. If it is ‘A’ then it is ‘Adda Rasthe’ means ‘Cross road’. If ‘MA’ then ‘Mukhya Rasthe’ means ‘main road’.

Have you noticed? For SAMYUKTA characters, Kannadigas write half character as full and full character as half. Say for example, ...let me think. HINDUSTAAN (HINDUSTHAAN). In Hindi, Gujarati SA is half so it is S and TAA (THAA) is full. Here different. It is HINDUSAATHN (HINDUSAATHN). AA will be added to S. So it is SAA. At the right bottom corner, small TA (THA) will be added.

1.6 Language Discrimination

Before I forget, we need to add vertically flipped L (upper case English L) to all symbol. Like Hindi, all have cap, here all have cap + one vertical feather on top, left corner. The last character of any English word is exceptional. It has symbol 6 at top left corner, instead of vertical line. So just by looking any word written in Kannada, you can easily say, weather it is native Kannada or English. Now turn comes for Telugu people. They first remove this vertical feather from the top. Then they approve all such symbols. How? They just add one tick mark above to all of them, saying yes, this is correct, yes this is also correct. So now, after adding tick mark, all Kannada characters becomes Telugu characters. So Congratulations. You started reading this article to learn Kannada script. But, you learn to read Telugu also. One + One free. Just Enjoy MAADI.

So now you learnt so much right? What to read and how to read by identifying minimum characters, consuming less CPU cycles. Wait. First, how you will identify, it is written in Kannada? If it does not have curves. Then Tamil. Else, if it has curves and tick mark above character then Telugu. You can read Telugu as Kannada, just ignore this turban or feather. And over the above all, if you can read it very fast, then it is not Kannada, Tamil or Telugu. Either it is English or it is your mother tongue language :) . Yes, nothing to laugh. It really happens with me :). Once , from the city bus window, I was struggling to decode all the boarding of shops, written in Kannada. Suddenly, I could able to read very fluently! Miracle ! Then I realize, it was written in Gujarati. :)

Once I had one more funny experience with Urdu language. I saw a name written in Urdu language at Airport road. I learnt Urdu with my own interest in my school days. It has total three alphabets. Character at the beginning of word has different symbol, same in the middle of word is different and at the end of word it is full like capital/upper case character. Still I can recall few characters. So coming back to Airport road. I tried to read that Urdu board. I read it from right to left. So first character was ALIF. Second, I could not decode. Third was NUN. So it is a four character name, start with A and one middle character is NA. What it can be? Confused. Then, after some time, I came across, same board. Oh! it was English only. I thought it is ALIF (first), it was I, last character. English is from left to right. So first is last and last is first. And the second (or third ?) character, that I thought NUN, it was U. It was written SUFI. :)

How nice it would be, if we have XML tags. All text should be enclosed with XML tag, to indicate its language. Like This is English. यह हिंदी है | And off course these XML tags must be in English :)

2 Spoken Kannada

Anyway, so do you agree, Kannada script is simple? So you can read it. Yes. But what does it mean, that you are reading? Good question. Let me share with you, my experience.

2.1 Basic rule

Before that, first rule, spoken Kannada is very slow or say lazy language. People fully pronounce each character. NIDHANAVAGI means slowly, peacefully. The last character ends with ‘Aa’, unless it is English. Like say, ‘Namaskar’ is in Hindi too. But in Kannada it is ‘Namaskara’. There is one recent musical Kannada movie hit is ‘Milan’ मिलन They write it as ‘Milan’ in Kannada. But read it as ‘Milana’ मिलना. Here people feel, if they do not end word with ‘aa’, then it is incomplete. Then what to do if already word ends with ‘aa’? Does it become ‘aaaaaaaa……..’ ? No it is reverse way. It becomes ‘a’ only!! Say for example, my एक्स employer name is ‘Airvana’ एरवाना It is written in Kannada as ‘Airvan’ एरवान , read as ‘Airvana’ एरवाना . :)

2.2 Lessons from my mistakes

I tried to talk in Kannada. Once I told to driver that I was absent on first day. ‘Mungaru dine nanu Bandidilla’ (Mungaru dhine nany bandhidhilla). There is popular movie ‘Mungaru Male’ It means ‘The First Rain’ and Male means rain. So obviously, ‘Munagru’ means First. But no!! Mungaru is a type of rain. So by listening to my statement the driver was so confused. What does I mean by saying ‘rain day, I did not come’ !!! So in short, Mungaru word only comes with Male. One more such confusion happened. At the end of the day, evening time my colleague was living for the day to home, so told me ‘Bye’. I replied, in Kannada, with full enthusiasm. It is my Kannada. I told, ‘ok bye and Hogi Bartini’ (Hogi Barthini). My friend got confused. She corrected me that yes she is going and she will come back. While, I was not going or coming back, I was still in the office only. ‘Hogi Bartini’ means ‘I am going and I will be back’. I should tell her ‘Hogi Banni’ means ‘Go and come back’.

2.3 My creation

All the time, I do not confuse people with my Kannada. Once I made a correct and innovative statement. Happy Birthday is simple. ‘HuTTu Habbada Shubhashay gaLu’. How to wish ‘Belated Happy Birthday’? Simple, ‘HuTTu Habbada Aadmele Nidhanvagi Shubhashay Galu’. I wrote a nice SuPrabhatam in Kannada.

It means

"At the morning, in the Bangalore , there is less traffic. All junctions have Green signal. So all Bangalorians wake up and drive towards office. Slowly, traffic jams start. Wake up traffic police and do welfare for Bangalore city. To all Bangalorians, Good Morning.!"

2.4 Simple tricks

So yes, with practices, you can speak better Kannada. You can attend weekend class at Hosmat Hospital. Contact Mr. Raghavan 9448878569 or Mr Natarajan 9845680958. You can organize Kannada class at your organization. Kannada Kali will provide all kind of help.

Still, if you feel difficult, then let me share few simple tricks. Learn Kannada in five minutes :) . It is very very simple. Just Listen. Whatever they says, you reply, ‘Hauda(Haudha)…?’. They may reply back ‘Haudu(Haudhu)’ and continue. If some serious topic, you become serious and say ‘HAUDA…?’ If other party laughs, you also laugh and say ‘Hauda…? :)) ’ ‘Hauda’ means ‘Aisa Kya?’ in Hindi, ‘Is it so?’ in English and ‘Eppadiyo’ in Tamil.( Eppadiyo is famous word. It comes in ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’ movie songs also) How long, you can manage with just saying ‘Hauda…?’ They may ask you something. Again simple. Only one answer for all the questions. ‘Ondu Nimisha’. Whatever they ask, give same reply. It is correct. It means. ‘Just please wait for one minute’. After one minute they may repeat the quesiton. No problem, you also repeat the same answer. "Ondu Nimisha". got it ? :) What'e fun!

So Happy learning Kannada. It is nice and rich language. Kannada literature has won maximum JyanpiThh award so far. (We write Gyanpith). And all Kannadigas are so sweet, so emotional and they love Kannada so much that if they know, you are learning Kannada, they will support you. They become your nice friends. And feel very happy, even if you put effort to make even one statement in Kannada. Even once Sonu Nigam spoke that, local people VJ Rubi Bhatiya feel very happy, when he speak anything in Kannada. He is a playback singer for 'Mungaru Male'

So enjoy learning Kannada.

3 Mungaru Male

Recently I watched a popular hit Kannada movie. "Mungaru Male". Enjoyed. It was copy of Hindi DDLJ. Except the end. Overall the movie was too good. Love Stories are simple to understand. No logic. Natural scene, waterfalls are too good, that you can enjoy only on the wide screen of cinema. The whole movie was with full fun by the Hero Ganesha (Pritam, Pritham).

Starting was so simple. Heor's mother was asking "AAMELE?" means next? The hero was describing, how he met her, how he fall in gutter. "AAMELE?". She took out him out of gutter. Wow!! Kannada movie is so simple to understand. Just one word "AAMELE?" The whole movie was not so simple. In the whole movie, me and the father of heroine. ERADU ONDE. We both had same situation. He was using the hearing aids. The hero always removes it and says whatever he wants to say. The poor father cannot understand. I have limited Kannada vocabulary. So even I can hear, I cannot understand fully. He can not hear. I can not listen to. So we both were inferring from the facial expressions, tone, gestures etc, what others are talking.

The heroine's parents assigned responsibility for successful marriage of their daughter to hero Ganesha. And do you know, what? When the heroine slapped him twice, he was wrenching in rain, the heroine had an umbrella for her. Then she threw the umbrella and ran away. Instead of pick up it, the hero sat in VAJRAASAN.What was the need of doing such VAJRAASAN? at the time? in rain? when the free umbrella was lying down just next to him? ( If I could enter in the picture, I would have gone there, collected it and come back. :) )Her parents asked only for safe, successful marriage not asked for not take her umbrella, if she forget. But anyway, as I mentioned, love stories have no logic. Even to know her name, he put his 100% and catches her handkerchief. Fight with villain. Finally on the handkerchief, her name was written "Nandini" (Nandhini). In Bangalore, you just go to any street corner, you will find one milk selling outlet with this name: "Nandini". What was the need to catch that handkerchief, run behind it for such a common and popular name? Again the love stories have no logic. :)

The end fully disappointed me. The poor hero, twice took bath with gutter water, bitted by villain, his mother slapped him, the heroine slapped him. That too for twice. And after all these also, he could not marry her! So sad. :( At last, I was waiting, that he will get call on her mobile, he will return and marry her. But no. The end. "Priti Madhura, Tyaag Amar" ("Prithi Madhhura, Thyaag Amara"). (by the way, there was no mobile tower in that hilly area, where he was driving. No coverage. So if someone call him back then also, "This mobile is not reachable!" ) It was not DDLJ. And like almost all Hindi love story, there was no last moment running towards airport also. Like the movie 'Ashiqui' or 'Chalate Chalate' or many such movies.

My Kannada friend argued, how can you say the end is sad? Who knows in the movie Ganesha was not hero, but he who married with her was hero!! Lateral Thinking.

Gujarat is famous for its delicious food items. Majority of us are vegetarian. Diwali is special festival. Next day to Diwali is new year for us. We offer various food dishes to the lord, in almost all temples. We decorate them in front of lord. It is called ANNAKUT.

You will find something different at this blog "Express YourSelf !" This Navratri article is also unique. It describes cultural aspects of our

India

particularly Gujarat in terms of various songs lyrics that (GARABA/RASH) we sing during this festival. The Gujarati songs with English translation for the benefit of International Readers of this blog.

Navratri: Nav means Nine and Raatri means night. These is a nine night festival, is celebrated differently in different parts of India by Hindus.

Mythology Concept:

Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore three different aspects of the supreme goddess or goddesses.

On the first three days, the goddess is invoked as a powerful spiritual force called Durga, Amba, in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects.
During the next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth.
The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the daughter of brahma as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order to have all-round success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine femininity, hence, the worship for nine nights.

During Navaratri, some devotees of Durga, observe a fast and prayers are offered for the protection of health and property. A period of introspection and purification, Navaratri is traditionally an auspicious time for starting new ventures.

On the tenth day of October Navratri, the holiday of Dussehra, an effigy of Ravana is burnt to celebrate the victory of good (Rama) over evil.

So let's all enjoy some famous/popular GARABA = song/folk songs that people sing during this dance. Look at these wordings. Its root in the Indian mythology, devotion, culture, new era etc.etc.

Devotion

I had great respect for Manmohan Singh’s initiative of economic reforms. I promoted “A View from Outside” book by P. Chidambaram at my blog. Today I regret for my great opinions about Congress. The same P. Chidambaram is now handling Home affairs. He is guiding Delhi Police against anti-corruption movement.

How nice, if some of us civil society people, IT people, middle class people join the politics. Let’s consider useful aspect of, Mayawati’s statement, to implement. Let’s pass people friendly bill. We will speak spontaneously, without written notes. Most of us very little hope from our elected representative. Today Annaji is leading us. We are united under a Gandhian after so many decades. Even if this bill pass, in long run, corruption may take another form. In future, who will unite us to fight against any other injustice? Anyway we have woken up now. So let’s find a constructive long term solution.

Somehow politicians have made entry barrier for us – the common men. We also enjoy such ideas in movies only. Someone has to come forward. What do you think? Express YourSelf !

10 things to know about Anna Hazare ‘n Jan Lok Pal Bill.. !

1. Who is Anna Hazare?

An ex-army man. Fought 1965 Indo-Pak War

2. What’s so special about him?

He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra

3. So what?

This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills.

In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly & harmonic village.

4. Ok,…?

This guy, Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for his social activities.

5. Really, what is he fighting for?

He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.

6. How that can be possible?

He is advocating for a Bil, The Jan Lokpal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.

8. It’s an entirely new thing right..?

In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit their theft (corruption).

7. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?

The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.

Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the JAN LOKPAL BILL. 50% government participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.

8. Fine, What will happen when this bill is passed?

A LokPal will be appointed at the center. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been going for last 25 years without any result.

9. Is he alone? Who else is there in the fight with Anna Hazare?

Baba Ramdev, Ex. IPS Kiran Bedi, Social Activist Swami Agnivesh, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and many more.

Prominent personalities like Aamir Khan is supporting his cause.

I have many questions, particularly to Hon. Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Yes, the parliament is supreme. Simple reason. The members of parliament (MPs) are our representatives. Today all Indians are in favor of Jan Lokpal Bill. I am wondering, what can be the reason that the parliament is in favor of toothless SARAKAARI Lokpal Bill?
How come the parliament could not pass any such bill in the last 64 years !
If Hon. Prime Minister wants to take the strict actions against the corruption, then what can be more strict method/way/system than Jan Lokpal Bill ! PM should share that idea with team Anna to make Jan Lokpal Bill more strict.
Today youth of India is giving maximum support to Anna Hazare. At this crucial time, Where can be Rahul Gandhi, who wanted to lead the young generation !!

How nice it would be, if they are aware about hurdles in our day to day life, caused by corruption. We should have a challenging yet simple game for all the ministers and MPs.

•    Get ration card, passport, for them without giving even a single paisa bribe.
•    Just go and register real estate property on your name without bribe.
•    Just convince an auto driver to come with fair as per meter charge.
•    Have a wonderful drive on their vehicles, they will realize how our roads are built. How difficult it is to collect receipts from a traffic police.

After going through all such experiences, their eyes will open. What a ridiculous, the SARAKAARI Lokpal Bill does not address any of our day to day life issues, listed above. We do not mind paying 30% Income Tax. Yes, while paying bribe we feel guilty and helpless. It is unethical. Government officers, MPs and all politicians gets good salary. In addition to that, they take bribe, without any fear! As there is no any strict law, to punish them.

Just look at this article, last year 2010, we had maximum scams. Don't you thin, It is our money. If bank gives us loan, it makes sure for repayment. It is bank’s money. When we invest, we make sure to get positive maximum return. It is our money. Same way, the money, India lost in all the scandals, are our tax payers’ money. This year, our Hon. Prime Minister acknowledged in Independence day speech, the contribution of farmers, labors, workers for the economic growth of India. We have also contributed to bank balance of corrupt politicians. The black money deposited at Swiss banks are our money. Even if corrupt politicians caught with evidence, as per present law, they will get imprisonment for 7 years or so. After 7 years, they can enjoy all our money they stole by scams!!

Anna Hazare rightly said, in this video. We - the people of India - are the king in democracy. Ministers are our servant. However, since Independence, the Neharu/Gandhi family has ruled over us, looted us and made us servant. So far, all the laws were made by them, which make them richer and richer. We have blindly followed and tolerated. Now, it is time, that we - the people of India - are making laws and the government has to follow it. Today the government is just buying little more time to exist, by all such reactions to Anna Hazare movement.

I am sure, our Hon. Prime Minister understand everything. The right and wrong. However he seems helpless. The "remote control" controls him !!!

Enough is enough. I am concern about my money, which I lost in all these scams. I wish to have such a RAM-RAJYA, where no one needs to pay any bribe for anything. So I support India Against Corruption movement. So I am observing fast tomorrow 19th August, to support Anna Hazare. For next election, I will cast my vote only to that candidate who really cares for common men, their problem and supports vision for corruption free India. I will never caste my vote for Congress (I) who kept a true Gandhian Anna Hazare in Tihar Jail.

What about you? Will you all accompany Anna Hazre for his movement India Against Corruption, whatever way, you can?

15th August is Independence Day in our India. In addition to an old event report Made In India, let me share two nice photos.

One is about a Rangoli at Forum Value mall, Whitefield, Bangalore. Happy Independence Day 2011. The Rangoli is prepared by Mr. Arun Sagar, an art director.

Now look at this, a typical Indian house-maker is preparing food for dinner. This photo was captured without flash on 15th August 2011 between 8 to 9 PM. Electricity was there. Lights were switched off to support anti-corruption movement. To support Anna Hajare's Jan Lokpal Bill. To oppose SARAKAARI Lokpal Bill.

This is just a single photo, but there are many such women, house makers, families, shop keepers who switched off the light.

This is a kind of filler article. To keep the blog continue. This is an event report of a book release named "Made in India." in April 2005. Enjoy MAADI !!

What will come to your mind, when you hear “Made in India ”? A voice of Alisha Chinoy’s “Made in India ……” from her popular musical album! Right?

But here I am talking about a symposium on emerging Indian competitiveness. Mr. Subir Roy has written an interesting book “Made in India – A Story of Emerging Competitiveness” I attended its book opening ceremony with my friend on pleasant Saturday evening 9^th April 2005 at CrossWord, Bangalore . Interested? Then keep on reading.

Let me first introduced the distinguished member of the panel. They were representatives of all major sectors.

Mr. G. Gurucharn - IAS officer from policy making.
Mr. Subroto Bagchi from MindTree and Mr. Nadan Nilekani from Infosys – IT sector. Mr Prakash Gurbaxani, from Transworks – ITES sector.
Mr. Harish Bijoor from Harish Bijoor Consultants – Service sector.
Mr. Ravi Uppal from ABB India – manufacturing sector and
off course, the author Mr. Subir Roy. :)

The discussion was really interesting. All these members vocally and dynamically presented their view about India and its competitiveness. Subir Roy was taking notes, through out the discussion.

Nadan Nilekani emphasized on human capital. “All CEOs are quality conscious and very confident for global competitiveness…” He also mentioned importance of VAT (Value Added Tax).

Prakas Gurbaxani made a short speech. He mainly emphasized opportunity in food processing and garment export. He reminded that our Bangalore is also important for garment exports.

Ravi Uppal mentioned that we are forgetting importance of secondary sector -manufacturing while we stress too much on services.

G. Gurucharan IAS officer, he was a bit pessimistic. “Whenever we talk about India ’s competitiveness, we all remember only about economic reform started 15 years back in 1991. Bangalore – IT hub and other industrial areas are like islands of excellence…” (We all know, Strategy guru Dr. C. K. Prahald introduced this word “islands of Excellence”) G. Gurucharan reminded audience about states like Bihar and Zarkhand. “Central government as well as state government both have to do so many things. Combined efforts by Industry and Government will be more effective. Here, at India , government policy makes one step forward and two steps backward. Our industries need to become first nationally competitive in the unified national market, before being globally competitive. …”

Subrota Bagchi informed that the author himself has nagging sense about this book may become obsolete very soon. “Till now, we have always studied India in flashback. We talked about Naheru, Gandhi, cultural heritage etc. First time, this book is written about real time. Even, the changes are so fast that real time is also not sufficient; we need book in fast forward mode …

“There is a major demographic shift in the whole world. We will have 4.5 to 6 billion teenagers in next 15 years in India and Pakistan together. So many unusual things will happen in business and corporate world…

“There was a time, when a senior executive of Sun Micro System, told me, he do not know where is India ? Sajan Jindal was reluctant to put seal of ‘Made in India ’ on steal. Then slowly he unwillingly agreed. Today, Jindal industry is getting premium price with ‘Made in India ’ seal. The foreigners think that if Indians can write good quality software then to produce good quality steal is not a major deal for them…

“Suppose, without this IT booms, if I was at US, then maximum I would be a taxi driver there. Today, situation is such that, at US if any taxi driver is Indian, then people thinks that he must be a software engineer also!

“Maharshi Aurbindo mentioned that independent of India ’s independence, the country has its own destiny too. This book talks about this destiny.”

Harish Bijoor delivered a nice presentation with Power Point slides. He started his speech with Nadan’s comments to him, “Power corrupts people and Power Point corrupts everything in presentation if it does not work. :)

“This symposium panel members represents all major sectors like: IT, ITES, Manufacturing, Policy making. Biotech is missing. India is a brand since 1995. He always searches for Indian products at Indian stores in abroad. He mentioned some statistics. In 1970 46% contribution in GDP was from agriculture, in 2004 21% and in 2011 it will be 6%. His major concern was agriculture sector. Poor agriculture is like only one big black hole in Indian economy. As per him, we have two Indias . The Real India is 643000 villages where 70% of population stays. Other one is virtual India . Rural India is again divided in Developed India with 32 % of rural India and 43 million homes. Developing rural India has 90 million homes. If we want to increase per capita income from Rs. 480 in 2001 to Rs. 2000, then we must need to focus on agriculture…”

At last, he wished best of luck to the author that his book will have sales figure as good as OR better than, Alisha Chinoy’s Made in India album’s sales figure.

Then we had an interactive round of Question – Answer session.

Subir Roy replied that the primary focus of the book is Indian reader. Nadan Nilekeni shared his views about vision comes first, or vision developed as we proceed.

Someone asked about panel’s view on China v/s India . Ravi Uppal describes that China do not have competitiveness in service sector. They are competitive in mass production and batch production. India is also moving for mass production. E.g. two-wheelers. India is much more competitive in software development and IT sector. China trains its people for global education and English. We have stable policy, supportive government, and disciplined people. Subroto Bagchi mentioned social aspects. In addition to IT and ITES, we need competitiveness in other sector also. Today BPO has very high turnover rate. In his days, civil engineering was at boom. So all parents were pushing their son/daughter to civil stream. Today parents have same craze for IT. Particularly in Andhra Pradesh, software engineer with H1B visa has very high value in marriage market. Nadan Nilekeni mentioned that we can apply IT for agriculture also. We developed software for supply chain optimization. Developing software is not difficult. We need a framework and competitive market. Our retails chain should demand such software. Supply chain optimization software should be pulled by market, instead of pushed by us. China is lacking in soft infrastructure. China does not have neither legal framework nor financial framework nor democracy. It is always easy to build road for India compare to build democracy for china.

At last one lady from the audience informed that, it is not only Alisha Chinoy. Recently, Intel also acknowledged the contribution of Indians in its progress. Patel inside and Intel Outside!!! Harish Bijoor agreed with her. He also mentioned that yes we are competitive; the issue is how to market that Patel. He explained his experiment with late Devang Mehta (NASSCOM) They purchased best cleaning broom and packed its nicely. It costs them Rs. 95 They could sale them at Rs. 1600 in US. They found broom very useful for cleaning. They also exported Gujarati BAANDHANIs.(a type of SARIs)

At last, Harish made an excellent summary. He compiled all the relevant points from all the speakers. Subir requested all to unwrap the book and just hold it for the benefits of photographers. We saw the books. It contains interesting cases, statically data with graphs about India . It costs Rs. 350 after special discount only for that occasion. Each copy had author’s autograph. Someone requested to Subroto for the autograph on the book. He politely denied that, only author can give autograph on the book.

My dear friend,

It is more than evident that our Government and all the political parties are unwilling to enact a strong law against corruption. Because if they did so, many of them would face imprisonment. There is a serious conflict of interest. None of the large scams like the Adarsh Housing scam, the Commonwealth Games scam, the Reddy brothers scam, Fodder scam, Health mission scam of UP, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha scam, Cash for vote scam are covered by government.s Lokpal. What use is such a Lokpal Bill? It is weak and ineffective. It has a very narrow jurisdiction. None of the corruption faced by a common man is covered under it either. Please refer to my recent article http://news.indiaagainstcorruption.org/?p=3129 on this issue for more specifics on why we think the government draft is not serious about tackling corruption.

Anna.s fast from 16th August is our last hope. We can.t afford to fail this time. For if we fail, we may never get another chance. Its now or never.

A number of people across the country are planning various protest activities. You can organize your own or or you can participate in any manner possible.

1st August to 9th August: Many people across the country are forming small teams and undertaking short and long padyatras. They would talk to people on their way, hold meetings, distribute pamphlets (download pamphlet from http://www.indiaagainstcorruption.org/downloads.html) and show Jan Lokpal film. Would you like to plan a Yatra with your friends?

From 9th August: Mass burning/tearing of government.s Bill as a mark of non-violent protest. Anna will start it most likely from Delhi or Mumbai.

From 9th August to 15th August: People in villages, towns and mohallas will form teams and go for prabhat pheri in mornings singing patriotic songs and educating people about corruption and Jan Lokpal Bill. In the evening, there would be candle light and mashal marches.

15th August: Switch off lights from 8 pm to 9 pm on independence day as a mark of support for the anti-corruption movement.

Fast starts from 16th August: Government says they would crush Anna.s fast the way they crushed Baba Ramdev.s movement. We are ready for that. We will offer ourselves for arrest if the government decides to arrest us. We are ready to face their batons and bullets. But we will not move from there. We will not retaliate. It will be a completely non-violent movement.

But if the people take a week off from their work from 16th August and take to the streets- in front of their house, on the crossings, in parks, everywhere . with a tricolor in their hands, raise slogans against corruption - Government can crush one Anna, but it won.t be able to crush 120 crore Annas. Government could impose section 144 on one Jantar mantar. But will it impose curfew on the whole country?

If the whole country takes to streets for a week from 16th August, WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, can force the government to enact a strong Jan Lokpal Bill.

Ad-Hoc Amplifier

As you know, I started innovation series sometime back at our blog. "What an idea Sir-ji " I defined the outline for upcoming articles on innovation, application of simple innovative idea to make our day to day life easy. Today its first article on ad-hoc amplifier.

Innovation name: Ad-hoc Amplifier.

Intent: Make an amplifier with available household electronic items.

Context: Amplified voice through speaker system is always effective. The audience can listen to even in the presence of ambient noise. At Art of Living course, it is easier to explain Ujjai breath with help of amplifier. Many times, it may difficult to arrange amplifier for small gathering, in short notice.

Applicability: To address a group of people. To arrange music, singing any entertaining programme.

Accessories:

* A microphone with 3.5 mm audio jack. If it has 5.5 mm or 2.5 mm jack, then suitable adapter to convert it to 3.5 mm jack.
* A laptop, easily available with IT people. OR Desktop PC. Windows, Linux any OS is OK.
* An FM Transmitter.
* An FM Radio, and/or two-in-one, and/or any GSM/CDMA mobile handset with built-in FM radio. extra speakers or even TV speakers can be utilized.

Implementation:

* Connect the microphone to audio in jack of laptop/desktop computer. Many laptop has built-in microphone, that one can use.

* Make sure, the audio is not mute in laptop/desktop computer.

* Connect FM transmitter to audio out of laptop/desktop computer. So its speaker will be automatically muted.
* Switch on the transmitter.

* Now tune any FM radio, two-in-one, mobile handset to the frequency of FM transmitter.
* Mobile phone with extra speakers: Connect extra portable speakers, that might come along with mobile. Connect Computer speaker with mobile. If mobile has 2.5mm out audio socket, then you may need to use 3.5mm (for computer speaker) to 2.5mm (for mobile socket) convertor.
* Mobile phone with TV: Connect mobile phone and TV with TV out or HDMI out feature of mobile. If mobile handset has just audio out socket then use a cable with one end 3.5mm jack and other end two RC pins.Red color RC pin for right channel and white one for left channel. Insert the cable pins as per their colors matching with colors of RC sockets at TV. Even Few TV models has built-in FM radio.

* In the absence of any kind of extra speakers, play FM radio in mobile with its speaker. Request audience to use their mobile as FM radio tuned at transmitted frequency. More number of mobile will add volume.
* Even people can use their hands-free earphone to listen to and avoid ambient noise if any,

Known Uses:
* The FM transmitter is very useful to avoid physical cabling at any party, programme or even at home to connect TV or MP3 player or iPod or laptop to remote audio system. One can play same music with multiple FM radios in different rooms.
* Any can enjoy his favorite TV programme, without disturbing others (particularly night sleep) with his FM radio in mobile + hands-free earphone and FM transmitter connected to TV. No need of cabled earphone from TV.

* FM transmitter can have many other uses like setup a spy device to capture audio conversation.
* Use FM transmitter to connect your iPod, Music player or mobile handset to Car audio system. Generally all car audio systems have built-in FM Radio. Such arrangement can also be possible by

With cascading multiple such FM transmitter tuned to different frequency, one can establish a communication channel across a distance.

Limitations:
* FM transmitter has short range. However it is sufficient inside car and inside home, small hall.
* The Usage of FM transmitter (particularly high power one) may be legally prohibited.
* If FM transmitter is not set at unused frequency then it jams genuine FM radio channel for public.

Future Scope: One can further explore use of other technologies for home networking like
1. Bluetooth. Usage of bluetooth speakers and bluetooth dongle.
2. WiFi. DLNA standard protocol over home WiFi network.
3. Femtocell. In future femtocell may also be capable to connect audio devices.

4. AM Transmitter should be cheaper. However, FM radio prevails in most of mobile handset.

Related solutions: Cordless microphone are popular since long. Even small battery powered amplifiers availble in the market. Car audio system has 3.5 mm audio Auxiliary (AUX) socket. So travelers can connect their mobile / iPod with an audio cable with 3.5 mm jack at both ends. Nowadays car audio systems are also bluetooth ready.

However, FM Transmitter seems a low cost solution to avoid audio cables and arrange for an ad-hoc amplifier. It goes well with many mobile model having FM Radios.

These two Chaupais (Quartets) are the first two quartets of the Guru Vandana in the 'Bala Kaanda' of Sri Ramcharit Manas by Goswami Tulsidas composed in Avadhi language during the 15/16th century.

The meaning is as follows:-

"I worship the Lotus feet of my Guru,who is full of (is the abode of)the sweet nectar of Divine Love.He is like the Churna of the Sanjivani (Amar Mool)which cures all types of ailments that can afflict oneself in this world."(Q-1)

"He (Tulsidas says about his Guru) is like the Divine Vibhuti (ash) on Lord Shiva's body which cleans the Mind of a Devotee & enables him/her to reflect the Divinity like a mirror reflects light & which when applied on the forehead (Tilak) enables one to conquer all the Gunas through which this creation works."

This translation is as given in the Ramcharit Manas translation published by the Gita Press,Gorakhpur (UP).

Innovation….’Hmmm’’ buzz word. The movie 3 Idots has highlighted it very well….Recently, US president Obama emphasized on Innovation for boosting competitiveness and job creation. Yes, innovation is also a business strategy. A business farm can succeed based on low price, quality offering or some differentiation/innovation. Today, I am starting a new series on innovation "What an idea, Sirji" at our blog “Express YourSelf !”

Here, you will find some innovative ideas, tips and tricks, application of technology in our day to day life, some basic theory behind it. I will also contribute a new blog, E-Science Center. It targets students, to think creative and innovative. The blog will have lots of projects, practical application of theory, concepts that students learn in school. It just makes science learning as fun. :)

I wish to follow some format/template to describe innovative ideas. I got inspiration to create such template from a famous book "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software" by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson and John Vlissides with a foreword by Grady Booch (Gang of Four, or GoF)

Innovation name: A word or a phrase that concisely describe the innovative idea.
Intent: Purpose to solve a particular need.
Context: A historical background about identification of the need and motivation for such innovation.
Applicability: Describes some common situation attributes, where we can apply this innovation.
Accessories: A list of required tools, softwares, hardwares, etc.
Implementation: Step by step guide to implement the solutions.

Guruji Sri Sri Ravishankarji mentioned several times to read Bhagavad Gita. We can find many article at his blog: Wisdom from Sri Sri Ravishankar. He suggested to read Bhagavad Git on Janmashtami celebration. Recently, on 15th January 2011 at Mumbai Maha-Satsang, He suggested to complete Bhagavad Gita reading in a month. We find many versions of Bhagavad Gita. Guruji suggested to read a simple version, with just translation in your native language. We Indians should not loose our cultural root.

I thought to apply technology so everyone read Bhagavad Gita in a month. The first thing, I could think is a dedicated blog, with 30 articles, that contains Bhagavad Gita and its translation in Hindi and English. I found online version from Gita Press.

Before I start a new blog, I just Googled about it, and found, many blogs, and other resources about Bhagavad Gita. So I dropped idea to add one more “me too” kind of blog. This article is about various resources, I found on Bhagavad Gita.

Bhagavad Gita is a concise guide to Hindu theology and also as a practical, self-contained guide to life. It represents a summary of the Vedantic and Upanishadic teachings, it is also called "Veda of the Vedas" and "the Upanishad of the Upanishads".

The main philosophical subject matter of the Bhagavad Gita is the explanation of five basic concepts or "truths":
Ishvara (The Supreme Controller)
Jiva (Living beings/the individualized soul)
Prakrti (Nature/Matter)
Dharma (Duty in accordance with Divine law)
Kaala (Time)

Krishna counsels Arjuna on the greater idea of dharma, or universal harmony and duty. Krishna expounds the various Yoga processes and understanding of the true nature of the universe. Krishna describes the yogic paths of devotional service, action as a selfless service to mankind, meditation and knowledge.

Fundamentally, the Bhagavad Gita proposes that true enlightenment comes from growing beyond identification with the temporal ego, the 'False Self', the ephemeral world, so that one identifies with the truth of the immortal self, the absolute soul or Atman. Through detachment from the material sense of ego, the Yogi, or follower of a particular path of Yoga, is able to transcend his/her illusory mortality and attachment to the material world and enter the realm of the Supreme.

The Gita addresses the discord between the senses and the intuition of cosmic order. It speaks of the Yoga of equanimity, a detached outlook. The term Yoga covers a wide range of meanings, but in the context of the Bhagavad Gita, describes a unified outlook, serenity of mind, skill in action and the ability to stay attuned to the glory of the Self (Atman) and the Supreme Being (Bhagavan).

According to Krishna, the root of all suffering and discord is the agitation of the mind caused by selfish desire. The only way to douse the flame of desire is by simultaneously stilling the mind through self-discipline and engaging oneself in a higher form of activity.

Krishna summarizes the Yogas through eighteen chapters. Three yogas in particular have been emphasized by commentators:
Bhakti Yoga or Devotion,
Karma Yoga or Selfless Action
Jnana Yoga or Self Transcending Knowledge.

Vashant Panchami is the festival, that indicates beginning of spring. One can find, many songs, poems, articles, essays on spring. This festival is also dedicated to MAA Sarswati. The goddess Saraswati is known as a goddess of knowledge, arts and music. Today, Saraswati Puja is organized at many places in India.

We all know, knowledge is power. Today bangalore is IT hub due to software knowledge of all the youngsters of India. I believe I have grace of MAA Sarswati. So today's blog is dedicated to the goddess.

Flower Show

Every year, flower shows are organized in January (Republic Day of India) and August (Independence Day of India), at Lalbagh, Bangalore. Have a look to last year photographs click here on Independence day of India 15th August 2010.

We used to have such show at my native place Mithapur. More Garden. Sometime in February, every year. Once I saw nice flower rose with water drops. I liked it so much. I observed it with full attention, from all the angles. That day, I created a Gujarati poem. "A - GULAB" (means: that rose). To read it, click here.
