How to Configure and Run Symbols 6.0?

Unzip all files to a folder, say C:\ or D:\

Go to folder

C:\Symbols. Locate file SYMBOLS.exe and right click the mouse to create a shortcut for it.

Copy the shortcut to desktop

Important: You need to install free Borland Command Line compiler from Ebarcadero

Install the compiler to a path, say C:\Borland\BCC55\ by default. It may show an installation failure at the end. Neglect it. We will link Symbols to this compiler path at a later stage.

Run Symbols from shortcut

On the notification window, you will see an icon for Symbols 6.0 as shown here.

Clicking on the icon shows a menu. Select BondPad from the menu. Initial configuration of BondPad may take some time.

In the bond pad window, create a new file. From the tools tab, select 1 junction as shown (the cursor turns into 1 inside the drawing pane).

Click at center of the drawing pane (with grids)

Likewise, select I, C, R and Se elements one by one and place them in the drawing pane as shown below.

Note: Keep at least two grid points gap between the elements. The elements appear within circles (circles are there to help you in drawing bonds. They can be removed later).

To connect the elements, you need to select line from the Tools tab.

After that, first click inside the circle of one element and keeping the left mouse button pressed, move inside the circle of another element to which you want to draw the line and release the mouse button there.

This way, connect all the elements to complete the bond graph model. After all connections are done, you may want to remove the circles. Go to view menu and use hide circles. Likewise, switch off the grids from the same menu. Your GUI should look like the one given below.

Bhatt Memorial Excellence Fellowship Program which typically happens every summer around the middle of May till the middle of July.

This program offers an opportunity to undergraduate/ masters students of Science and Engineering to work with faculty and post-doctoral fellows of the Centre and to participate in research at the frontiers of knowledge. Students from previous years have contributed productively to research at ICTS, and many have continued research careers at universities around the world.
Selected candidates will be provided stipends and accommodation during this program.

Applications are invited from both Indian and foreign nationals.

For the Physics stream, this summer program also provides an early route to the PhD and Int PhD graduate program at ICTS. Candidates who perform outstandingly in the summer program will be provided with a unique opportunity to apply early for admission to our graduate program. Upon subsequently clearing a written test and interview, successful candidates will receive early PhD/Int PhD offers.

Eligibility

 Property: Any characteristic of a system.

 Some familiar properties are pressure P, temperature T, volume V, and mass

 Properties are considered to be either intensive or extensive.

 Intensive properties: Those that are independent of the mass of a system, such as temperature, pressure, and density.

 Extensive properties: Those whose values depend on the size—or extent—of the system.

 Specific properties: Extensive properties per unit mass.

Couses of Viscosity

 Matter is made up of atoms that are widely spaced in the gas phase. Yet it is very convenient to disregard the atomic nature of a substance and view it as a continuous, homogeneous matter with no holes, that is, a continuum.

 The continuum idealization allows us to treat properties as point functions and to assume the properties vary continually in space with no jump discontinuities.

 This idealization is valid as long as the size of the system we deal with is large relative to the space between the molecules.

 This is the case in practically all problems.

 In this text we will limit our consideration to substances that can be modeled as a continuum

No slip condition

 The layer of the fluid in contact with the solid boundary has the velocity of the boundary itself. In other words, the layer of the fluid sticks to the solid surface in contact and there is “NO SLIP” at the surface.

Lets take a example of pipe  Inside a pipe or tube a very thin layer of fluid right near the walls of the tube are motionless because they get caught up in the microscopic ridges of the tube. Layers closer to the centre move faster and the fluid sheers. The middle layer moves the fastest

Specific mass or density (𝞺)

 The “mass per unit volume” is mass density. Hence it has units of kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m3 ). Specific mass or density (𝞺) = 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠/ 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑘𝑔 𝑚3

 The mass density of water at 4 oC is 1000 kg/m3 while it is 1.20 kg/m3 for air at 20oC at standard pressure

Specific weight or weight density (𝟂 or 𝞬)

 It is the ratio between the weight of a fluid to its volume. It is also termed as weight per unit volume of a fluid. Its unit is N/m3 .

Specific volume (𝞶)

 It is defined as the volume of a fluid occupied by a unit mass or volume per unit mass of a fluid is called specific volume.

𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 1 𝞺 ( 𝑚3/ 𝑘𝑔 )

Specific gravity (S)

 The ratio of specific mass (density) of a given liquid to the specific mass (density) of water (standard fluid) at a standard reference temperature (4 oC) is defined as specific gravity (S).

Specific gravity (S) = 𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑙𝑢𝑖𝑑 / 𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑓𝑙𝑢𝑖𝑑 (𝑁𝑜 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠 )

Example:

 Density of mercury is 13600 kg/m3 . What is the specific gravity. 𝑆𝐻𝑔 = 13600 / 1000 = 13.6 Problem: 1. Find out the specific gravity of oil having density of 800 kg/ m3? 2. If the specific weight of oil is 8829 N/m3 . Find its specific gravity, density and specific volume?

VISCOSITY

Viscosity: A property that represents the internal resistance of a fluid to motion or the “fluidity”. Drag force: The force a flowing fluid exerts on a body in the flow direction. The magnitude of this force depends, in part, on viscosity

Viscosity

 Different kinds of fluids flow more easily than others. Water, for example, flows more easily than honey. This is because honey has a higher viscosity.

 Viscosity is a property of fluid by virtue of which a fluid offers resistance to the relative movement of one layer to the other layer adjacent to the first layer.

Cohesion force of attraction

 Particle of a layer attracts the particles of other adjacent layer.

 As a result net force in the backward direction for upper later and forward direction for lower layer. So, the net velocity of upper layer decreases and lower layer increases.

Molecular momentum exchange

 Particles of one layer jumps into the other adjacent layer and vice versa.

 As a result the particles in the upper layer consists of some slower particles and in the lower layer we have some fast moving particles. So, the net velocity of upper layer decreases and lower layer increases.

Newton’s Law of Viscosity: It says that the shear stress is proportional to the velocity gradient or shear strain rate.

Dynamic viscosity: Units or Units of dynamic viscosity are Poise.

Mechanics: The oldest physical science that deals with both stationary and
moving bodies under the influence of forces.
Statics: The branch of mechanics that deals with bodies at rest.
Dynamics: The branch that deals with bodies in motion.
Fluid mechanics: The science that deals with the behavior of fluids at rest
(fluid statics) or in motion (fluid dynamics), and the interaction of fluids with solids or other fluids at the boundary.
Fluid dynamics: Fluid mechanics is also referred to as fluid dynamics by considering fluids at rest as a special case of motion with zero velocity.

Hydrodynamics: The study of the motion of fluids that can be approximated as incompressible (such as liquids, especially water, and gases at low speeds).

Hydraulics: A subcategory of hydrodynamics, which deals with liquid flows in pipes and open channels.

Gas dynamics: Deals with the flow of fluids that undergo significant density changes, such as the flow of gases through nozzles at high speeds.

Aerodynamics: Deals with the flow of gases (especially air) over

bodies such as aircraft, rockets, and automobiles at high or low speeds. Meteorology, oceanography, and

hydrology: Deal with naturally occurring flows.

Difference between solid,
Liquid and Gas

✓The solid state is one of the fundamentals tates of matter :

 Solids differ from liquids and gases by the characteristic of rigidity.

 The molecules of solids are tightly packed because of strong intermolecular forces; they only oscillate about their mean position

 Whereas, liquids and gases possess the property of fluidity and can easily flow.

 Solids can be defined as the state of matter which has definite shape and volume and has a rigid structure.

 Solids possess the least compressibility

and thermal expansion.

 Example: Iron (Fe)

The molecules in a liquid are closely packed due to

weak intermolecular forces.

Liquids

 These forces are weaker than solids but stronger than that of gases.

 There is much space in between the molecules of liquids which makes their flowing ability easy.

 Liquids can easily acquire the shape of a vessel, and they have a fixed volume.

 Conversion of solids into liquids takes place when we increase the temperature of solids to a point where solids begin to melt.

 Generally, the density of liquid lies between the density of solids and gases. Compressibility and thermal expansion of liquids are slightly higher than that of solids.

 Example: Water (H2O)

In this state of matter, distances between the Gases molecules are large (intermolecular distance is in the range of 10^−7 – 10^−5cm).

 The intermolecular forces experienced between them are negligible.

 Thus, translatory, rotatory and vibratory motions are observed prominently in gases.

 Gases do not have any fixed shape or volume.

 They also possess high compressibility and thermal expansion.

 Example: Oxygen (O2)

What is a Fluid?

 Fluids is a substance that cannot resist a shear force or stress without moving as can a solid.

 It is usually classified as liquids or gases.

 A liquid has intermolecular forces that hold it together so that it possesses volume but no definite shape.

 A fluid deforms continuously under the influence of a shear stress, no matter how small.

 In solids, stress is proportional to strain, but in fluids, stress is proportional to strain rate.

 When a constant shear force is applied, a solid eventually stops deforming at some fixed strain angle, whereas a fluid never stops deforming and approaches a constant rate of strain.

Definition: Fluid

 Fluid: Fluid is a substance that deforms continuously under the action of shear stress, as long as the shear stress is applied, no matter how small the shear stress may be.

 It is this property of fluids not to resist shear stress that makes them capable to flow and take any shap

Definition: Liquid vs Gasses

 In a liquid, molecules can move relative to each other, but the volume remains relatively constant because of the strong cohesive forces between the molecules.

 As a result, a liquid takes the shape of the container it is in, and it forms a free surface in a larger container in a gravitational field.

 A gas, on the other hand, expands until it encounters the walls of the container and fills the entire available space.

 This is because the gas molecules are widely spaced, and the cohesive forces between them are very small.

 Unlike liquids, gases cannot form a free surface.

Differences

Fluids

• Fluids have no shape

• Fluids cannot sustain a shear force, i.e. a fluid is always in motion • Stress is a function of the rate of strain, thus a fluid had a dynamic' state

• The static properties of a fluid cannot be extended to dynamic properties

Solid

Solids have a definite shape

• Solids can sustain a shear force; i.e. they remain static

• Stress is a function of strain, thus a solid maintains a static or `quasi-static' state.

• The static properties of a solid can be extended to dynamic properties.

Similarities

The continuum hypothesis is used for both fluids and solids.

The fundamental laws of mechanics apply to both fluids and solids.

- Newton's law of motion (conservation of momentum) - Conservation of Mass

- First law of thermodynamics (conservation of energy)

The constitutive law relating stress and rate of strain also apply to both.

Solution : First of all we have to cut All the member Required I.e AB, AG and FG. By a Sectional Plane .

Step 1 : Let , AA' be a Sectional plane.

Step 2 : We have to cut the members in such a manner that at least 3 unknown member cut out.

Step 3 : Select the smaller portion for solving this problem.

Step 4 : Draw the F.B.D (Free Body Diagram ) of the Structure and Show the proper direction of forces acting if any.

Step 5 : Draw F.B.D of Each joints separately and Find the necessary Unknown Quantity , we Can Use the Law of Equilibrium I.e

Sumation of X-axis = 0
Sumation of Y-axis= 0
Sumation of Moment = 0

We can also use the Lami's Theorem when necessary.

*Note : The Sign convention should be carely use when solving Such type of Problems.

Take +ve Sign for +ve X-axis and +ve Y-axis for Forces.

Take -ve Sign for -ve X-axis and -ve Y-axis for Forces.

Take +ve Sign for clock wise and - ve Sign for counter clockwise direction of the Rotation of the forces forthe Moment
