Quarterly Dumpster Dive

The environmental impacts of a building are enormous. A buildings operation and its waste output can have big consequences for both the communities and ecosystems in which they operate.

Bentley Prince Street is doing a fantastic job of mitigating its environmental impacts, and the proof is in the trash. Our first quarter Dumpster Dive, held last week and attended by 20 associates, confirmed the great job showed our associates are great stewards of the company’s recycling program.

The dumpster we evaluated was from the maintenance team and weighed 205 pounds. Of the 205 pound container, the team was only able to find 1.13 pounds of recyclable materials. That is less than 1% by weight, which mean the maintenance team is doing a fantastic job of recycling. The recovered material included plastic, paper and wood.

We are proud to announce that every time we hold a Dumpster Dive our efforts are greater than the last event.

Our Associates Give Blood to Give Back

Bentley Prince Street had a great show of heart last month during our annual blood drive. Twenty five associates turned out to donate blood as part of our Winter Blood Drive with the American Red Cross.

Associates happily gave to save a life. “… pints collected at your drive will make their way into local operating rooms – delivering hope for patients and their families,” Clifford I. Numark, Chief Executive Officer.

Holding this drive was even more of an impact than earlier years, due to blood shortage as a result of cold and flu season. The shortage caused the blood supply to dip in the first two months of the year.

Our Wellness Program Featured in Los Angeles Business Journal

I love heading up wellness at Bentley Prince Street as part of my role in Organizational Development. I have had the privilege of seeing so many people make slight shifts in their health, which has led to major changes in their lives. I was thrilled when the Los Angeles Business Journal called and asked me to share our story.

 Wellness is an important part of our culture and I am delighted to have been part of the development and growth of our wellness program for the last several years. The program offers something for everyone, from walking club to yoga to Pilates. Wellness for us goes far beyond physical fitness and addresses the whole person and work/life balance. This sense of community builds engagement, inspires collaboration and teamwork, and translates to better results for the entire company.

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. (Jan. 15, 2013) – The Board of Directors at Bentley Prince Street today announced the appointment of Ralph Grogan to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective immediately. Grogan brings more than 30 years of relevant experience in the carpet industry having served in senior management positions with several carpet manufacturers, including chief operating officer of Tandus Flooring. Grogan succeeds Anthony Minite, who stepped down as President and CEO of the company last week.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Ralph Grogan’s caliber and experience to lead Bentley Prince Street going forward,” said Mac Bridger, board member and interim CEO of Bentley Prince Street. “Anyone who has followed Ralph’s career knows he is the right person for this position and brings a successful track record of leading some of the top carpet brands in our industry.”

In the last decade, Grogan has earned a distinguished record as an operating executive in the floorcovering industry. Most recently, he served as Vice President of Business Development and Strategy for Antron, which is the carpet fiber brand for Invista Surfaces. In this role, he was responsible for sales, marketing and growth for the Antron brand worldwide. Prior to that, Grogan served as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Tandus Flooring where he successfully led the integration of Tandus’ three product brands – C&A Floorcoverings, Crossley Carpet Mills and Monterey Carpets. During his tenure, he led the company’s efforts to build its global business and successfully implemented several innovative sales and marketing strategies to meet the demands of a dynamic market.

Before becoming the COO of Tandus Flooring, Grogan held various leadership positions, including President of Monterey Carpets, President of Burlington House Floor Accents, and Vice President and General Manager of Lees Carpets where he gained extensive experience in operational management, sales and marketing, and product development.

“Bentley Prince Street is widely recognized for its innovative designs, commitment to product quality and sustainability as well as excellence in customer service,” said Grogan. “I am truly honored and excited about this opportunity to lead Bentley Prince Street, and I look forward to building upon this legacy for years to come.”

Bridger cited Grogan’s experience with leading the global and domestic sales, marketing and distribution for Tandus Flooring and his proven ability to establish lasting relationships with the major flooring contractors as key factors in the Board’s decision.

Bridger continued, “Dominus Capital invested in Bentley Prince Street because we believe the company has a great opportunity to achieve strategic growth in key domestic and international markets. Ralph is a talented, proven executive who will provide a renewed leadership for Bentley Prince Street as we implement an aggressive growth strategy that will strengthen the core markets for the company and expand its iconic brand into new markets throughout the U.S. and world.”

Grogan continued, “Bentley’s leadership in broadloom innovation will continue. However, we will greatly expand our carpet tile offerings and make them more attractive for traditional end markets that are essential to driving growth for the company.”

Grogan currently serves on the Board of Visitors with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Board of Advisors for the Educational Foundation with the university. He earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Upon making the announcement, company officials said Bridger will give up his role as interim CEO but will remain active with the company as a Board member.

Wellness Success Begins with a Plan

As we begin 2013, we would like to thank all our associates for making 2012 the best year in the Wellness Center to date. There were 1000 more visits to our on-site gym in 2012 than 2011. We were pleased to see many success stories in our Wellness Center in 2012 such as associates who lost more weight than they ever could before and those who remained committed in 2012 to what they started in 2011. We also had associates who didn’t lose weight necessarily, but who worked harder to be healthier.

Although our Wellness Team is here to help associates reach their goal, ultimately, it is up them. We can help create a plan and we can lay out the correct weights, the mats, write the workout on the board and change it accordingly to keep the progress moving forward. However, it’s up to them to come to the gym before work, after a long workday, or at lunch. The hardest part of a workout is not the workout...it’s getting to the gym. Once you’re there, it’s easy.

You are the one who puts in the work. We can’t lift the weights for you, eat the right foods for you, or drink water for you…that is entirely up to you. All the success stories from 2012 have one thing in common…they did it for themselves. You can’t teach that. You have to want that. They set their mind to accomplishing a goal and they worked hard to achieve it. No amount of incentives will ever compare to the commitment you make to yourself.

Our wellness community is growing at Bentley Prince Street and it can happen in corporations all over the world. Create a walking club, participate in a community 5k or find a partner to workout with regularly. If you don’t have a gym at your company there are other ways to get moving and having a partner to hold each other accountable is a great way to stay on track. A healthy workforce improves our performance and productivity but more importantly, it improves the lives of our associates and their families.

Getting started. Set a goal to lose a specific amount of weight or body fat and give yourself a realdeadline. Then make a plan to accomplish your goal, find a partner and get moving! Do this and next year we will blog about your success!

For this reason, we are very excited to be launching our all new Area Rugs program, which offers designers, architects and homeowners a program to easily create custom area rugs, runners and walk-off mats crafted from our beautiful and long lasting carpet products. Delhaven Community Center Holiday Toy & Food Drive

Our company has been a supporter of Delhaven Community Center for 14 years and our annual Holiday Toy & Food Drive is something our associates really treasure. We collect toys and food during the weeks leading up to Christmas. This year we were able to collect more food items than ever before. We all get emotional when we see the looks on their faces when they come to pick it all up. We are so grateful to be able to provide these wonderful gifts to such a deserving organization in our community.

Delhaven Community Center provides over 27 programs and services for children ages 5 to 18, at-risk youth, mentally challenged adults, families and the community in general.

During the holidays, they assisted over 100 families with over 400 children. Throughout the year, the average age group of children served is 5 to 18 years of age, however during the holidays, they provide toys and food for infants to children 15 years of age.

How you can help.

The Delhaven Community Center is always in need of financial donations, as well as, playground equipment, balls, bats, games, art supplies, etc. They also collect toys throughout the year, which they hold for the holidays. The center is currently focused on getting a new passenger van as one they have now is quite old and requires constant upkeep and repairs. It has been an exciting year here at Bentley Prince Street and as 2012 comes to a close I am reflecting on some of the wonderful events we have participated in with our customers. In September we had the honor of being invited to the Key Bank headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio to celebrate their award of LEED Platinum certification for two of their largest buildings. The two day event we attended featured a sustainability celebration and LEED dedication ceremony. The first day was a Vendor Fair where all of the 2,700 employees at the Tiedeman campus had an opportunity to meet the companies that provide goods and services to their company and learn about their individual sustainability goals. It was a great opportunity for the employees to actually meet the companies that help Key Bank reach the LEED Platinum certification. The second day of the event featured a presentation of the prestigious LEED Platinum plaque from the USGBC to Key Bank.

Bentley Prince Street provides the carpet tile, broadloom and walk off tiles for all of the 1,090 Key Bank branches all over the country as well as their office buildings in and around their hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. We are so proud to be associated with a company like KeyBank whose strong commitment to sustainability is in line with our own.

As evidence of this commitment, the U.S. Green Building Council awarded the renovated offices, at 4900 and 4910 Tiedeman Road in Cleveland, Ohio platinum-level certifications -- the highest level attainable -- through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.

The LEED rating system evaluates existing buildings, new construction and neighborhoods based on factors ranging from energy consumption to reserved parking for low-emission vehicles or bicycles. Our carpet tile and broadloom with high percentages of post consumer recycled content contributed to award of this certification.

Key's Cleveland office buildings comprise 570,000 square feet and house 2,400 employees. They are among just nine buildings in Ohio that have earned LEED platinum certification. By adding more efficient lights, turning off equipment when the buildings are empty and making other changes, Key cut its electricity use at the buildings by 40 percent to 45 percent. The bank said it expects to save more than $650,000 a year on electricity and the renovations also cut water use by 43 percent.

Like our customer Key Bank, we too operate in a certified “Green” building. Our manufacturing facility was awarded LEED for Existing Buildings certification at the Silver level in 2007 and we are on track to be awarded Gold in the very near future. We are honored to be in a partnership with a company like Key Bank who also recognizes the importance of LEED certification and has a strong commitment to the environment and to their people.

Building Homes for the Holidays with Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads

This weekend Habitat forHumanity of South Hampton Roads, Virginia dedicated three houses, all with BentleyPrince Street carpet installed. I teamed up with a local dealer, who agreed to receive and install the material, and together we were able to help get these houses complete for the families to move in right before Christmas! Each of these houses were rehabilitated houses, which have been updated and renovated with new floor coverings, paint, appliances and more. With the recent economy and housing situation, Habitat has been able to purchase some great houses that have been foreclosed. With a little renovation and updates, Habitat is helping more families purchase homes sooner.

The new homeowner families were so excited and grateful. The picture below is the Kee family. The mother LaKeisha Kee has a daughter (far left) and a younger non-verbal, autistic son. This home allows them to have a fenced-in backyard, which brings relief and joy to a mother who can allow her son to play outside without constantly worrying about his safety. Her close friends were at her side to support her (also pictured) and couldn't have been more excited about the new life and home they will build together. To the far right is Ross Cherry, owner of Cherry Carpet who offered his company's services to install the carpet. In light of the sorrow of last Friday in Newtown, CT, together we were so happy to be part of such a joyous event Saturday and to know that this family would be safe in their new home at Christmas.

At the second house, Larissa Bolz was able to achieve her dream of becoming a homeowner by age 40. Her son was Trent the star of the show! He couldn't have been happier to show everyone his new home. Larissa, a single mom, has been trying to work 40 hours a week and finish her degree, as well as completing her required 500 sweat equity hours building her Habitat home. She has spent endless nights at this home trying to get it prepared for this day and to show it off to the community. She, too, will move in this Friday; right before Christmas. This family currently lives right next to the Naval Air Station where loud jets fly over her house every couple of hours. She noted how excited she was to let her son play outside without having to cover his ears from the noise.

Last Wednesday, on 12/12/12, we hosted our second annual designer cooking competition. This year's event “Cook, Create, Donate” was held at the beautiful B/S/H Design & Experience Center in Irvine, CA. The elegant space is designed to INSPIRE and EDUCATE clients and B/S/H graciously let the Orange County design community utilize their space for just that purpose. Bentley Prince Street was proud to co-sponsor this event with Antron, Commercial Interior Resources, Allsteel, Gunlocke, MomentumTextiles, Dirtt, Johnsonite and CBI Office.

Our eight A&D teams (HKS, Ware Malcomb, LPA, GKK Works, H. Hendy, Boulder and Associates, Interior Architects and Taylor) were delighted to make their culinary entries using the live, state-of-the-art Bosch, Thermador and Gaggenau kitchen vignettes.

The designers were tasked with creating "Holiday-Inspired Gastropub" appetizers and given 45 minutes in the kitchens to pull together their pre-determined menus. We all then had a wonderful time sampling each entry and judging a winner, one for each of three categories: Creativity, Presentation and Yum Factor/Taste.

With dishes like Savory Pancetta Cheesecakes with Sangria; Three-Cheese Panini with Creamy Basil Tomato Soup and Braised Pulled Pork Pie with Stout, we were all winners. Even the folks at B/S/H were blown away!

The food was crazy good, the people were a blast and the competition was fierce. But the best part of the event was that we, collectively, sponsored our charity, Laura's House once again. Laura's House provides unmatched domestic violence victim-related services to the 865,000 residents of Orange County and beyond. It is said that 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during their life times. If you would like to learn more about Laura's House please visit the website.

There is no denying that this has been an exciting year for all of us at Bentley Prince Street! Our return to being an independently owned company has given us even more reason to celebrate our unique history, especially with products like Iconic Intensity™. Iconic Intensity recently won the 2012 Ultron DOC Awardand pays tribute to our company’s heritage of textiles with smooth, frieze and velvet texture designs that alternate between wide and thin stripes.

The Ultron DOC award recognizes products that shine in the areas of originality, color and texture combination, as well as usability. This is the second year in a row that we have won this award and it truly is a highlight for us.

Another Bentley Prince Street product, So Vintage™, was also recently recognized for its celebration of vintage interior fabrics. So Vintage was awarded the Interior Design Best of Year honoree award in the broadloom category.

As the Director of Marketing, I want to thank all of our associates, customers and colleagues for making this a great year for our company. We look forward to creating more beautiful products in partnership with all of you in 2013!

We recently participated in the Greenbuild Expo in San Francisco, as an exhibitor at the show and sponsor of the Metropolis events. Greenbuild is the annual conference and trade show of the US Green Building Council, which attracts over 35,000 people from all facets of the built environment. Many attendees from both A&D and end-users from all over the country visited our booth and it was gratifying to be able to speak with them about Bentley Prince Street’s big year, our legacy, and what’s next for our great company. As this was our first trip to Greenbuild since returning to a privately owned company, there were many questions about where we’d been, what we’d accomplished under the guidance of Ray Anderson, and where we were going.

We are proud of the work we have done these past 18 years and it was exciting to stand before this audience and proudly unveil our initiatives going forward.

We introduced our new PATH approach, which stands for Purpose, Action, Teamwork and Heart, and also previewed our new recycled Rubber Tile carpet tile backing that is currently being beta tested, which we expect to roll out to the market in early 2013. Perhaps the most exciting announcement we made at Greenbuild is our partnership with the MBDC and the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Products Innovation Institute!

We have begun the process for C2C certification on our products and you can expect more information from me on that program in the weeks to come. C2C certification combined with our Environmental Product Declarations reinforces Bentley Prince Street’s position as a leader in sustainability for our industry.

My Strengths Presentation at IFMA

At Bentley Prince Street we are committed to identifying and developing our associates’ strengths and tapping into those strengths in order to maximize productivity and quality in our work. It is true that you can ask almost any of our associates what their top five strengths are and they practically jump at the chance to tell you. We believe in strengths-based education and coaching to such an extent that it is a service we provide to our customers in addition to our associates.

The interest that our associates and customers have in strengths is evidence of how the modern workplace is changing at a rapid pace. More and more companies are interested in strengths as a way to increase employee engagement, and I am proud to say that we operate at an extremely high level of engagement when it comes to strengths. This is why I recently traveled to IFMA’s World Workplace to share our knowledge on the topic. My presentation “Five Practical Tips to Develop a Strengths-Based Culture,” gave attendees a step-by-step guide on how to champion strengths within their own organizations.

Over 200 facility managers were in attendance and I loved answering all of their questions. Most were interested in learning about how to get started, while many inquired about using strengths to reconcile conflict. Using strengths as a common language at Bentley Prince Street has been very effective for conflict resolution. All IFMA attendees were eligible to receive Continuing Education Units and are encouraged to keep learning more about strengths from my Coach Cathy videos and by leaving comments right here on the blog.

We had a great time exhibiting at this year's NeoCon East in Baltimore, Maryland. NeoCon East is always one of the highlights on our tradeshow schedule because we love that it is a "mini" NeoCon where we can connect with our customers in a more relaxed setting. Our booth looked great and attendees couldn't help but stop by to get a closer look at the colors and textures of Iconic Intensity and learn more about our area rug program. On October 13, we were thrilled to support the Beckstrand Foundation’s annual fundraiser in Orange County to raise funding and awareness for programs that support patients who are in the midst of cancer treatment and struggling to cope with day-to-day critical survival needs. The event honored the late Farrah Fawcett.

The black tie affair began with cocktails and a silent auction followed by a delicious dinner and a live auction. Afterwards guests enjoyed dancing and casino games. The theme was Moscow Red Square and it was beautiful!

Bentley Prince Street is proud that our King’s Road carpet set the stage for this wonderful event and honored to have been able to support the important work the Beckstrand Foundation does every day.

We love customer feedback, which is why we were thrilled when Linowes Design Associates in Rockville Maryland reached out to us on Facebook with an installation that artfully balances comfort and minimalism.

To accomplish this effect in the Waterfront Towerslounge, they worked closely with sales rep., Robin Wasserman, to select the perfect carpet. Waterfront Towers is a high-rise apartment building in Washington D.C. designed by a student of modernist architecture, I.M. Pei. Using the building’s architecture as a guide, the team creatively used our Linked to the Vibe pattern in two different colors to create a striking striped effect.

Our friends at Linowes Design Associates have taken the Linked to the Vibe Pattern from the ViVA L.A. collection, which was designed in collaboration with Los Angeles based artist Andre Miripolsky, to new artistic heights with the Waterfront Towers project. We are honored to have our product in such a beautiful building.

Do you follow Kim Kardashian on Instagram? Well, we do and boy are we glad about it!

The lovely Kim K recently posted this pic of her shoes and low and behold, who do you think she's walking on? Bentley Prince Street! That is a product called Reynolds and as you can see it coordinates beautifully with superstar celebrities and designer shoes! Obviously, almost 130,000 people agree.

Iconic Intensity Area Rug

As we look toward NeoCon East in a couple of weeks, we wanted to also celebrate the success of IIDEX/NeoCon Canada. Attendance at this year’s show was great, which provided us with the opportunity to engage with designers, architects and facility managers from across Canada.

Customer feedback is extremely important to us and we were thrilled by all of the interest in our area rug program that includes custom area rugs, runners and walk-off mats. All of our area rugs are made from our beautiful and long lasting carpet products, which means there is an array of stylish and versatile patterns available to our commercial, as well as residential customers.

The Malibu Colony ™ Collection was beautifully displayed on the floor of our booth. Attendees were drawn to the collection’s interesting textures, which brought a little piece of California’s eroded beaches to the show in Canada.

IIDA Southern California Chapter’s Leaders Breakfast

Downtown L.A. has incredible energy these days with its mix of old and new buildings. It was the perfect setting for IIDA Southern California Chapter’s Leaders Breakfast, which was held last week at the J.W. Marriott. We are a sustaining sponsor of the IIDA Southern California Chapter and were happy to see so many members of the vibrant, Los Angeles design community in attendance.

The breakfast served as a great source of design inspiration. Tom Wujec, Fellow at Autodesk and Author of Imagine Design Create, Return on Imagination, Five Star Mind and Pumping Ions, gave the keynote. He left us with plenty of food for thought on how to incorporate visual thinking into business as a means for fostering innovation.

Every year, the breakfast also honors an individual who is making an impact in our industry. The honoree this year was Randall Stauffer. He is the current Chair of the Undergraduate Interior Architecture program at Woodbury University where he has taught for more that 20 years. Stauffer is a well-admired educator and we enjoyed seeing him recognized.

We are looking forward to rolling out the hospitality and our re-imagined area rug program at this year’s HD Boutique in Miami!

Beginning tomorrow through Wednesday, members of our team will be in booth #615 spreading the word to attendees about the availability of our products as area rugs in addition to broadloom and three carpet tile sizes (18x36", 24x24", 36x36"). This versatility is a benefit to hospitality designers and architects who are often faced with specifying different types of coordinating flooring products for one project.

Interesting colors, patterns and textures will also be on display with products like Illuminated Linen, Modern Motion, Oscar Worthy, So Vintage and Clodagh’s Natural State. We are getting ready to take our celebration of Vintage California design on an end of summer road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Tomorrow, is our San Francisco Open House and we are looking forward to welcoming our San Francisco customers into our newly renovated offices on Kearny Street to meet Robert and Joshua, our newest sales representatives, and view some of our newest products.

We have lots to talk about - especially how our return to being an independent, California company will allow us to introduce more creative designs, colors and textures to the marketplace! Please join us!

Bentley Prince Street is Going for the Gold (LEED-EB Gold)

In 2007, we worked very hard to achieve Silver LEED for Existing Buildings status and it’s an accomplishment we have been very proud of ever since. As the first carpet manufacturer in the United States to achieve this status, you can be sure we talk about it daily with our customers, partners, vendors and on our popular mill tours. We are proud to be walking the walk and being first to achieve Silver LEED-EB certification truly demonstrates our commitment to responsible manufacturing.

Now, we are taking it a step further by working to achieve Gold LEED-EB certification! It’s an undertaking that all our associates have embraced. We are all feeling like Olympic athletes these days as many of us have been ditching our cars for bikes in an effort to lessen the environmental impact of our commutes and Go for Gold!

This month we set a goal for LEED points by encouraging our associates to use alternative transportation. Our goal for participation was 50%. To achieve this we enlisted our marketing team, who put together a terrific campaign with educational events, inspiring posters throughout the mill and incentives for participation. We hosted an alternative transportation fair in the week leading up to our big push for Gold featuring great organizations that support alternative transportation in our community. The week of July 16^th was designated as Alternative Transportation Week and I am proud to say that we all got it in gear and together we exceeded our goal of 50% participation by 21.75%!!! The result of this great news is that we anticipate receiving 14 LEED points for this!

But, there’s more. In the weeks following our participation week, many of our associates have continued to ride their bikes and carpool to work. What an amazing team!

While I have every confidence in our ability to reach Gold LEED-EB status, it’s this journey and the engagement of our associates that has me beaming with pride today. That is worth more than any medal to me.

2012 Annual Beach Cleanup Removes over 400 lbs of Trash!

This past Saturday, we had 90 associates and their family and friends volunteer for our annual beach cleanup in Long Beach, California. This event is just one of the several restorative volunteer events we organize each year to help improve the environment and communities we live in.

Together, we removed over 400 pounds of trash and debris from the beach!

Thanks to all of the volunteers, this beach cleanup was our largest and most successful yet with 12 more volunteers than our 2011 cleanup, 44 more than in 2010, and we picked up much more trash!

Much of the trash we picked up consisted of plastic and Styrofoam that can poison marine life and breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. Only a small percentage of trash on the beach is actually from beachgoers. Most of the trash found on the beach is washed from storm gutters and parking lots into the San Gabriel and Los Angeles Rivers that empty on either side of Long Beach. Not only was this an opportunity to clean up a local recreation and wildlife area, it made for a perfect opportunity to build more awareness and teamwork amongst Bentley PrinceStreet associates and their families.

Success Indicators:

• 90 volunteers, 40 of which were Bentley Prince Street associates

• Over 400 lbs of trash and debris removed from the beach

Special thanks to Human Resources, notably Liz Chaidez, for organizing the event; Housekeeping for preparing all of the supplies; Reyes and Lisa Barraza for bringing the supplies in the Company truck; Ricardo Zapien for taking pictures; Sean Higbee for calculating stats; and to all of the associates and their guests who came to help!
