The pathetic Nehru stadium was a blot on Indore and this excellent cricket stadium in the heart of the city makes a grand return of cricket in the city of Indore. Like every other city in the country, the city of Indore has rejoiced on every great cricketing milestone of India and people have congregated in the heart of city -- Rajwada in thousands, lacs waving tricolor and chanting India India. Be it 2011 World cup wins (QF, SF and then final) or 1996 win over Pakistan or Dhaka win in 1998 or Lords 2002, people in this city have always celebrated with rigor and highest enthusiasm. Its not like Mumbai which boos its own heroes or is indifferent to the cricket in the town. Or like the other big centers where the crowd interest is dwindling.

Holkar stadium today wrote the name of Indore with bright golden letters on world cricket map -- city to host highest ODI score in history of 40 years. And what a pity, I am not around in my own hometown to witness this epic moment in the history of Indian cricket and of course, the history of Indore.

While Gayle ended up on the losing side, his fellow West Indian player - all-rounder Dwayne Bravo - who is a part of the Chennai Super Kings outfit finished on a high.

And Gayle admitted that while Bravo tasted victory, he is also celebrating RCB's successful campaign in the fourth edition of the cash-rich event.

"The party must go on...it was 3 WI players in finals, but at least 1 WI player taste IPL championship! Bravo.. Big up!! All 3 celebrating!!!," tweeted Gayle after the final match.

Interestingly, Gayle had gone unsold in the players' auction and was called in by RCB as an injury replacement. His coming to the event irked the West Indies Cricket Board, which accused the player of going without permission.

Government mull Bharat Ratna for Sachin Tendulkar

After 21 years of cricket, 99 international centuries and now The World Cup, the country's highest civilian honour might be the next feather in Sachin Tendulkar's Cap.

The Home Ministry is seriously considering the rising chorus for the batting maestro to be bestowed with the Bharat Ratna, sources said.

The demand to honour the batting maestro with the Bharat Ratna had gained momentum after he scored a double ton in the ODI series against South Africa last year.

Headlines Today was the first channel to initiate a campaign for a Bharat Ratna for Sachin.

Now Tendulkar's name for the honour has been recommended by a number of politicians as well.

In fact, the Maharashtra assembly has passed a resolution requesting the central government to confer the Bharat Ratna on Tendulkar. The BJP too has demanded highest honour for the players.

If Sachin is conferred with the honour, it would be another first. No other sportsperson has ever been given the Bharat Ratna.

Gary Kirsten on Tuesday officially stepped down as the coach of the Indian cricket team and said that working with M.S. Dhoni and his boys had been one of the most cherished moments of his life.

"Coaching the Indian team has been one of my most cherished moments. This Indian team is in a very healthy position. It has been a massive privilege to be a part of Team India," Kirsten said at a press conference.

"My goal while coaching India had been to make it the No. 1 team in the world," he said.

Kirsten lavished praise on Indian cricketers, especially captain Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar. "Dhoni is the best captain in the world. He always gives his 100 per cent," he said.

Asked if he saw Sachin playing in the 2015 World Cup, Kirsten said: "It would be great to have him around. I hope Sachin keeps going as long as he enjoys it. One never knows how long that could be."

Kirsten said the Indian team's fielding had shown immense progress. "I was surprised to see how the players fielded during the knockout games at the World Cup," he said, making a special mention of Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli.

He said Kohli was now ready for Test cricket and Ishant Sharma was a star of the future.

Kirsten said he had been overwhelmed by the love the players and fans had shown for him. "It has been one of the hardest goodbyes I have had to make," he said.

World Cup presented to Team India original, Says ICC World Cup 2011

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday denied handing out a replica of the World Cup to Team India.

The cricket governing body was reacting to reports that it gave away a fake world cup to the winners instead of the original one.

"The trophy presented to India was the original ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 trophy. The trophy was always intended to be presented to the winner of the event. There is no question that this was a replica," the ICC said in a statement.

"The trophy seized by Mumbai customs is the promotional, perpetual trophy which remains with ICC. That trophy will be reclaimed today and will travel back to Dubai as was always intended," the statement added.

The real trophy, valued at about $130,000 in monetary terms but priceless for the cricketers and their fans across the country, was not even brought to Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium during the finals as it was seized by the customs department on its arrival from Colombo after the Sri Lanka-New Zealand semi-final match on March 29. The trophy, according to customs rules, was not eligible for exemption from import duty.

Dhoni's men end 28-year wait, win World Cup

“Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni's stellar partnership paved the way for India to end its 28-year wait for a World Cup title even as Mahela Jayawardene's century and Muttiah Muralitharan's swansong ended in hurt and despair.”

Chasing a target of 275, India were pegged on the back foot as early as the second ball of their innings when Lasith Malinga trapped Virender Sehwag plumb in front, and though the Indian opener asked for a referral, it was upheld. Malinga then struck again in the seventh over when he had Mumbai's icon Sachin Tendulkar caught behind in the seventh over. But, the title was sealed when Dhoni hit the first ball of the 49th over for a massive six to put the icing on the cake and send a billion people into raptures.

And, to make things even sweeter for India, Yuvraj Singh was named Man of the Series for his 15 wickets and 362 runs. This win has also completed the career CV of Tendulkar, who didn't contribute to the final as much as he may have liked to, but his innings in the lead-up to the final, not least in the semi-finals against Pakistan, It was also the perfect send-off for coach Gary Kirsten, who has now ended his tenure with the Indian team.

Coming back to the loss of those two early wickets, Gambhir and Kohli got the run chase back on track with a 83-run partnership as the Delhi boys got India right back into the match taking minimal risks and milking the Sri Lankan bowling to the fullest. And, even after Kohli was caught off his own bowling by Dilshan, Dhoni and Gambhir took the chase forward.

Dhoni has not been in the best of forms with the bat in the World Cup, but he potentially played the knock of his career in the final as he remained unbeaten on a 79-ball 91 and shared in a 109-run partnership with Gambhir as they snuffed the fight out of the Sri Lankan attack and broke their spirit with each run they made. And, even though Gambhir was bowled going for a massive hit when on 97.

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his team-mates had promised Sachin Tendulkar that they would get the World Cup for him and they kept their promise.

Post the fine win the players lifted the batting maestro in their arms and took a victory round of the stadium in Mumbai.

Chasing 275, India reached the target on the second ball of the 49th over with the skipper hitting the winning shot off Nuwan Kulasekara putting his ball past the boundary for a six. In the process he put an unbeaten 91 runs on board, signalling his come back to form.

On the other end was Yuvraj Singh - the man who helped India win many a matches in the tournament. No wonder he went home with the coveted 'Player of the tournament'

Earlier in the innings, Lasith Malinga claimed Virender Sehwag on the second ball trapping him leg-before.

Post the first wicket, Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir got busy trying to revive the innings and they were doing it at a good rate scoring in boundaries.

But as all good things come to an end, their partnership too ended early and again the man in question was Malinga. Tendulkar went for a cut but ended up giving an edge to keeper Sangakkara with 32/2 on board. He scored 18.

Then Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli got on with a partnership scoring 83 runs for third wicket. But, just when their stand started to look dangerous Tillakaratne Dilshan got the vital breakthrough catching Kohli off his own bowling to send him back on 35 and India went down to 114/3.

Gautam Gambhir and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who sent himself up the order at number five, decided to carry on from where Kohli had left. The two batted on completing a 100-run partnership. They continued rotating the strike and milking the opposition bowlers.

Unfortunately for India, Gambhir missed his ton by three runs as Sri Lanka pacer Thissara Perera clean bowled him in the 42nd over. At the stage India were 223/4.

There were a few tense moments too with the India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni surviving a run out chance in the 42nd over. Television replays showed that he just about made it to the white popping line.

Indians took the Batting Powerplay in the 45th over and effectively utilised it with Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni chipping away at the target with urgency.

The two helped India home in the 49th over with 277/4 on board - a fine six wicket win. Skipper Dhoni walked away with the Man-of-the-Match award.

Sri Lanka innings:

Mahela Jayawardene scored a ton as Sri Lanka put 274/6 in 50 overs against India in the World Cup final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan started of cautiously as India seamers S Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan got busy trying to keep a good line after Sri Lanka won the toss.

Soon Zaheer got the man he wanted claiming opener Upul Tharanga on the first ball of the seventh over. The ball took the edge of Tharanga's bat and Virender Sehwag took a fine catch in the first slip. Sri Lanka score at the stage 17/1.

In the 17th over Harbhajan Singh accounted for the other opener Tillakaratne Dilshan with his turner. It was a soft dismissal that took away the batsman's leg stump when he was trying to sweep the ball down the leg side. He fell for 33 and Lanka fell to 60/2.

Post that wicket, captain Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene started off slowly dealing in singles but gradually upped the tempo. The duo had put 62 runs for the third wicket, when Yuvraj Singh got the man India wanted. An edge of Sangakkara's bat was lapped up by skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps on 48 and Sri Lanka went down to 122/3 in the 28th over.

Yuvraj Singh could have got another wicket in the form of Thilan Samaraweera, but the replays showed that ball had not touched the batsman's gloves or the bat before landing in skipper Dhoni's gloves.

Soon Mahela Jayawardene and left-hand batsman Tilhan Samaraweera got on with a partnership. But as has been the case in this match whenever two batsmen got going Yuvraj got the breakthrough. Here too when the duo had put 57 runs for the fourth wicket Yuvraj Singh claimed Samaraweera on 21 with an LBW written against his name. Sri Lanka were 179/4 at the stage.

There was more to come as Zaheer Khan struck back and removed new man Chamara Kapugedera with a well disguised slower ball. Kapugedera ended up giving an easy catch to Suresh Raina at mid-wicket and Sri Lanka were reduced to 182/5.

Jayawardene went on to complete his century and he did it in good time using just 85 ball to reach there. In the 48th over off Zaheer Khan, he hit consecutive fours to reach the milestone. But Zaheer proved to be a little lucky on the last ball of his over with Nuwan Kulasekara getting run out on 248/6.

But, the drama was far from over as new man Thissara Perera plundered him in the last over helping the team put on 274/6. He hit two consecutive fours and then a massive six off the last ball nullified Zaheer Khan's efforts that had seen him bowl three maiden overs at the start of the innings.

In fact, Sri Lanka scored 54 runs in the last five overs - their highest total in Batting Powerplay in this World Cup.

After leading India to the final of the World Cup with a shot worth 85, Sachin Tendulkar just can not wait to play one of the biggest matches of his illustrious career at his home in Mumbai.

"It would be a great opportunity to play the final in Mumbai. All we want is to stay calm and focused and do the work," man-of-the-match against Pakistan said at the ceremony presentation after the match.

Someone who was a member of the team which won all five games of the World Cup in Pakistan, the legendary striker was quick to admit that it would be "remembered that he always loved."

Someone who has always put the team before individual performances lavished praises Tendulkar young Suresh Raina whose unbeaten 36 provided the necessary dynamism death overs.

"Raina played a special move. When we started hitting, I felt it was for the score of 310-315. But, as the spinners came on and stopped the ball coming. I thought 265-270 would be good score to defend" said Tendulkar.

He, Virender Sehwag blitzkrieg at the beginning and the other gave him that little bit extra time to verify how inning.

"Viru us out of the driver, but then we had to assess the situation. It 'was a difficult wicket with the bat and we need to put up with the best score. Full celebrate their bowlers put on a great show."

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni also spoke in the same order of ideas on how the window slowly increasingly difficult to bat on as the game progressed.

"If you remove the opening partnership, we find that the 260 was a good score on defense. It may be that we have 20-30 in the second act" was that the assessment of the commander.

The commander admitted that his reading of the ground was wrong, but the seamers did a good job.

He praised Wahab Riaz who grabbed five 46 "Wahab played really well."

But the boss was critical of his batsmen. "The key partnerships have been and we could not start. So we played a bit of the workload. Ultimately, they played better cricket than us," Afridi was straightforward in his assessment.

About the decision not to take up the final Powerplay, Afridi said: "We thought we were going to take the Powerplay Bhajji when had finished his spell."

A Good Start Has Helped India Win Against Pakistan: Dhoni

India captain couldn't have asked for a better result against Pakistan in the World Cup semi-final in Mohali on Wednesday.

India beat Pakistan by 29 runs and will play Sri Lanka in the final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

But, it was the good start that helped India get there and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni felt that way. "We got off to a fantastic start through Sehwag and Sachin," said Dhoni after the match.

Giving out the details of the match, he said, "As the game progressed the wicket got slower, and in the middle overs it was difficult to score."

"Shahid bowled really well, and it was important to just play the bowling with respect. 260 was a good score for this pitch. It was turning, we read the wicket wrong and that's why we went with three seamers, but in the end the seamers bowled really well too," Dhoni added.

Praising Zaheer Khan, the skipper said, "Zaheer did really well. Over the years with experience he's become smart. We've struggled at times in this tournament, but that's the beauty of this game."

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who won the Man-of-the-Match for his persistent 85, acknowledged the crowd support.

"I would like to thank everyone here for terrific support, without that this wouldn't have been possible, and not to forget the team's efforts. We just had to make sure we got to a decent, fighting total," he added.

“India offie, who finished with 2-43, said, "This was almost like a final.”

t is possible, just, that this World Cup will produce a more cherishable moment than Sachin Tendulkar's decision to walk against West Indies on Sunday. That said, short of Ricky Ponting offering to ghost-write Aleem Dar's autobiography in exchange for a signed copy of the MCC's Spirit of Cricket, it is fiendishly difficult to see how.

Let's be clear about this. Walking is cricket's trickiest ethical dilemma. Always has been, always will be. It marks the intersection of professionalism and honesty, where pragmatism collides with principle. That it should rear its two-faced head again at this tournament is assuredly no coincidence, but more of that later. By way of measuring the delicate nature of this part-time custom, let's rewind to Cape Town, 1965.

On the opening day of the third Test, Eddie Barlow, the bulldog atop South Africa's order, survives a vehement England appeal for a catch at short leg, stands his ground, with the tourists convinced that the umpire has erred, and marches on to a century. Still livid, the fielders refuse, pointedly, to applaud, then over-compensate, equally pointedly, when Barlow's partner, Tony Pithey, reaches 50. Mike Smith's side are castigated for making their dissent so plain; one writer claims they descended "to a deplorable level". Smith duly apologises to Barlow, but the furore is merely warming up.

When England bat, Ken Barrington, on 44, nudges to short leg, on the bounce. Spinning around, the team joker makes as if to walk off, then returns, grinning. The crowd gets the joke. Shortly afterwards, Barrington edges to the keeper, Denis Lindsay. At first it looks as if he is about to walk, but he stays put. Again, the umpire was John Warner. "I knew I was out," Barrington would recall, "but then I remembered all the chat in the papers about leaving decisions to the umpires."

Apparently every bit as confused as Barrington, Warner doesn't flinch. For a few interminable seconds, time and picture freeze, whereupon Barrington walks. "I felt I just couldn't stay there," he later explained. "It was a matter of principle and sportsmanship." Cue applause from fielders and spectators alike, and a fusillade of criticism from journalists - many of them English - who felt Barrington had tarried too long. Unusually, outrage was caused because Barrington did walk.

The Rand Daily Mail wondered whether it was "an ostentatious act which bordered on gamesmanship" and urged Barrington to apologise to Warner for subjecting him to "ridicule and contempt". To the Fleet StreetDaily Mail, the action "smacked of 'we chaps know how to play the game even if you lot don't'." Barrington apologised. "I can blame my hesitation only on my own indecision," he would reflect. "I got terribly involved in the rights and wrongs of walking."

DON'T KID YOURSELF that walking is one of those noble practices that only died out with the advent of global professionalism. WG Grace famously stayed put even when his timbers had been shivered. Between the world wars, claimed Gubby Allen, "few batsmen ever walked unless given out".

That period may have accounted for 90% of Wally Hammond's career, but as England's first post-war captain he made Bill Edrich feel so queasy about not walking in an Ashes Test that Edrich promptly surrendered his wicket. Come the 1960s, according to Mike Brearley, non-walkers were considered cheats. In his disarmingly robust diary, Another Day, Another Match, the Gloucestershire seamer Brian Brain confirmed as much: "When I started in county cricket [in 1959], the ones who didn't walk could be counted on the fingers of one hand and they'd be given a huge rocket from their captains if they stood their ground when they knew they were out… [In 1980] I didn't see one batsman walk." All three, though, were referring to county cricket. In Australia it has never been the done thing, the honourable thing, nor even a credible act - hence the disbelief and dressing-room disgruntlement that greeted Adam Gilchrist's celebrated decision to off himself in the 2003 World Cup semi-final.



	If Tendulkar did act out of fear for what this brave new world might do to his reputation, we should not think any the less of him. What we got was the right result, regardless of how it was arrived at. End fully justified means

Nor, for that matter, was walking admired unreservedly in the shires. After all, reasoned Sir Derek Birley in his seminal myth-frying book The Willow Wand, here was a decidedly dodgy, shamelessly class-based and erratically practised custom instigated by amateur captains, who "set their honour code above the authority of the humble umpires" (and Hammond, note, had to turn amateur to captain his country). Unconstrained by social hierarchies or convention, Australians felt no compunction to follow suit. "[It] can be assumed as more likely to take place when a batsman has just made a century than after he has made three successive ducks," theorised Birley with a certain slyness. "It has, in fact, a slightly unreal 'holier than thou' aura."

It was refreshing, therefore, to hear Nick Knight, the England opener-turned-affable Sky Sports pundit, admit on Sunday to having been "a convenient walker… a selective walker". He walked if average/form permitted. The late Sir Colin Cowdrey was another "selective" walker. While remembered by many, quite properly, with admiration and fondness, bowlers deplored his wayward ethical compass.

Knight's confession came in the wake of Tendulkar's unprompted exit, which went conspicuously un-analysed by the Sky experts (and many others besides). Maybe they were being diplomatic. To question any batsman's motives in such circumstances would fling open a can of worms; to question those of the only active sporting icon with an unstained reputation could lever the lid off a bucket of cobras. The question, nevertheless, is too pressing, too relevant to the game's future, not to be asked.

Let's unpack the loaded context. The din in the MA Chidambaram Stadium was shrill and deafening; umpire Steve Davis would have been hard-pushed to hear any edge, let alone an inside tickle. Nor, even after multiple TV replays, was it clear that Ravi Rampaul's inducker had kissed Tendulkar's bat. Small wonder the appeal triggered a stately shake of the head from Davis, who looks more like the Buddha's younger, fitter brother with each passing match, and seems to have inherited the family wisdom.

One assumes Tendulkar knew he'd nicked it, but when the appeal was rejected he didn't go all Hamlet on us like Barrington; he was decisive, off in a flash. Yet what, one couldn't help but wonder, had sped through his mind during the interregnum separating shot and Davis' slo-mo shake? Was he mulling Ricky Ponting's extraordinary look of innocence after being adjudged caught-behind against Pakistan 24 hours earlier, a decision that my children's cat's grandmother could have made? Did Tendulkar feel Ponting should have walked? Does he believe the game's elders should be setting an example? Why not?

But might he also have been pondering the Decision Review System? Tendulkar has often expressed reservations about this latest contentious innovation (a major factor in the BCCI's distaste towards it, presumably); and now, lo and behold, the damned thing was in a position to put his image on the line. David Gower summed up one of the less-heralded by-products of the DRS with typical succinctness and delicacy after Michael Clarke walked during last November's Brisbane Ashes Test: "There's less incentive to stay." And after Clarke declined to walk in Adelaide, putting struggling team before ego and/or gallantry, he was palpably embarrassed and quick to tweet a public apology. Without the DRS, would he have been so remorseful?

The next question, to some, is the most damning: did Tendulkar act out of pragmatism rather than nobility? Did he weigh up the options? He must have known, had he stood his ground, that a review, even as early as the first over, would have been eminently likely. And what might that have unearthed? That ball had eluded edge? With no HotSpot on tap, why not? Or would it have showed that he, Sachin Tendulkar, the most pandemically respected sportsman of them all, an untouchable idol to billions, had tried, like that rogue Ponting, to get away with it?

This is not meant to decry Tendulkar; anything but. Since when is being human a sin? Like Barrington and Gilchrist, he waited for the umpire's ruling. Perhaps he and Gilchrist (if not Barrington) did so not to buy themselves time but out of respect for the adjudicator's sensitivities. None of this, though, should undermine the underlying message: if the DRS can make umpires look fallible, even incompetent, it can also make players look foolish at best, at worst dishonest. And if Tendulkar did act out of fear for what this brave new world might do to his reputation, we should not think any the less of him. What we got was the right result, regardless of how it was arrived at. End fully justified means.

Soon after Ted Dexter was appointed chairman of the England selectors, in 1989, he claimed that the public, in addition to "heroic deeds", craved "chivalrous conduct". If this was a remarkable and fruitless thing to say then, such romanticism is even harder to come by now. All the same, is a PhD in naivety the only prerequisite for concluding that the DRS is awakening something much more desirable than chivalry - namely honesty?

Unfortunately there may be a sobering epilogue, and a deeply ironic one at that. Sunday's episode might persuade Tendulkar to harden his stance against the DRS, in which case, such is his sway, the game's strongest incentive for honesty could well die a premature death. Let's hope this was his Damascene moment.

Dutch post 306 all out against Ireland

Put in to bat, the Netherlands made 306 all out against Ireland in their World Cup Group B match against Ireland at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. Live score

The Dutch side, who is yet to open their account in the 2011 World Cup, although, lost early wickets but the batsmen resurrected the Dutch side and with cumulative efforts posted a respectable score on the board against Ireland.

Earlier, Ireland skipper William Porterfield won the toss and elected to bowl against the Netherlands.

The Netherlands brought in medium pacer Bernard Loots in place of hardhitting batsman Tom de Grooth in the only change to the team that played against Bangladesh in Chittagong in their previous match.

Ireland retained the XI that played against South Africa.

From five matches each, Ireland have two points while the Netherlands are yet to open their account.

On the first ball of the ninth over West Indies pacer Andre Russell struck a lethal blow to send opener Matt Prior home. The good lenght ball that curved in slightly crashed into his stumps to dismiss him on 21. England lost their first wicket on 48/1.

There was more in store as Russell struck again to despatch skipper Andrew Strauss in the 12th over. The short ball lured him for a pull but the top edge sent him as Chris Gayle took a fine catch at mid-wicket. He fell for 39 and England fell to 79/2.

England won the toss and elected to bat. England have five points from five matches with wins over South Africa and the Netherlands and a high- scoring tie against India, but will be eliminated in the first round if it loses to the West Indies.

West Indies have brought back Chris Gayle, who out of action in the last match due to an injury. He replaces Shivnarine Chanderpaul. The other replacement in their team is leg spinner Devendra Bishoo in place of left-arm spinner Nikita Miller.

England have made three changes in their team. Chirs Tremlett has been called in place of Ajmal Shahzad, off-spinner James Tredwell replaces paceman James Anderson and Luke Wright has been called in place of Paul Collingwood.

Shane Watson and Brad Haddin scored 183 runs for the first wicket as Australia beat Canada by 7 wickets in their World Cup Group A match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Wednesday. Score

Chasing 212, Australia reached home in the 35th over with Michael Clarke and Cameron White at the crease.

Earlier the two openers Watson and Haddin started off slowly aware of the fact that the target wasn't something that called for heavy hitting. But as the innings progressed the two upped the scoring rate.

Their innings even got a boost when Canada captain Ashish Bagai missed an easy stumping chance in the 20th over off Balaji Rao when Haddin was at the crease. Haddin had even got a reprieve early in the innings when Rizwan Cheema dropped him off Harvir Baidwan in the second over.

The two took the Batting Powerplay in the 21st over and scored 41 runs in it. But, the Aussie scoring rate spiked in the over that followed with both batsmen charging away at the opposition bowlers, who didn't have an answer to their shots. Their effort of breaking the partnership came a cropper due to some sloppy fielding by the fielders.

After much effort the Canadian bowlers managed to break their stand in the 29th over when a John Davison ball took the edge of Haddin's bat and keeper Bagai didn't miss it this time. Haddin scored 88 hitting 11 fours and two sixes on the way. Australia lost their fist wicket at the score of 183.

But as luck would have it the other opener Watson too departed in the very next over missing his century by six runs. He wanted to pull Baidwan for a six but the ball didn't quite come on to the bat and instead ended up giving a catch to Henry Osinde in the deep. Australia were 185/2 at the stage.

Skipper Ricky Ponting was the last man to go down on the day. He fell in the 35th over off Henry Osinde.

Michael Clarke and Cameron White were at the crease when Australia touched the meagre 212-run target on the penultimate ball of the 35th over which turned out to be a wide ball.

Canada innings

Earlier, Hiral Patel scored a fine 54 as Canada posted 211 after electing to bat. But before that experienced paceman Brett Lee drew first blood by scalping Canada opener John Davison (14 runs) in the fourth over 41/1. But the surprising part was the Canadian run rate, which was tottering above 10 runs an over at this stage.

Post that wicket, the Canadian opener Hiral Patel and Zubin Surkari got busy with a partnership with Patel leading the way. Batting with resolve he went after the Aussie paceman and got rewarded. The best part about the 19-year old cricketer's batting was that he didn't shy away from hitting those odd ball to the boundary.

Finally, Patel's innings came to an end post his quick-fire half-ton in the 12th over. An edge off Shane Watson was taken by Mitchell Johnson in the deep. His 54 that came off just 45 balls was punctuated with five fours and three sixes. Canada were 82/2 at the stage.

Post Patel's dismissal, captain Ashish Bagai and Zubin Surkari got involved with a partnership. The two had put on 68 runs for the third wicket before Shaun Tait got the better of captain Bagai on 39. A short and wide ball saw Bagai reach out for a drive but ended up giving an edge to keeper Brad Haddin and Canada lost their third wicket on 150 in the 29th over

With new man Jimmy Hansra at the crease, Aussie spinner Jason Krejza got an opportunity to open his account and he got what he wanted. He removed Hansra in the very next over post Bagai's dismissal. And Canada were reduced to 157/4 in 30 overs.

Once again the change of pace worked for Australia with the next wicket falling to paceman Shaun Tait in the 31st over. A quicker ball pitched on the off and nipped in to take the inside edge of Zubin Surkari and crash into his stumps. He fell for 34 and Canada fell to 157/5.

Another over and another wicket, this time it was Brett Lee's turn to join the party and he did that by removing Rizwan Cheema with a slower ball and timber! Canada were 161/6 now. Lee finished with a four-wicket haul.

A little later, Mitchell Johnson sent back Nitish Kumar on 7 to reduce Canada to 169/7. From here in was just a matter of a few more minutes and Canada were walking back on 211 all out.

However, they can take heart from the fact that their batsmen stayed at the crease till almost the end of the innings as their last wicket Karl Whatham fell in the 46ht over. Even otherwise they batted pretty well on the day. Especially noteworthy was Hiral Patel's quick-fire half-century.
