Microsoft Launches Windows Phone Web Page

Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft has launched a new web page highlighting its existing Windows Phone 6.5 and the upcoming Windows Phone 7 mobile platforms. The page offers several resources such as tutorials and a list of featured applications for both versions of the mobile OS. In addition, the new web page allows individuals to view the different smartphones available. The list of Windows Phone 7 smartphones is currently empty for obvious reasons. However, users can learn more about existing Windows Phone 6.5 devices.

There’s no much to say about the web page other than it needs some refinements. With that said, the new Windows Phone web page does a good job providing existing Windows Phone 6.5 users and future/potential Windows Phone 7 users with great information about both versions of the operating system.

About Google Instant

Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. We are pushing the limits of our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, faster. Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type.

The most obvious change is that you get to the right content much faster than before because you don’t have to finish typing your full search term, or even press “search.” Another shift is that seeing results as you type helps you formulate a better search term by providing instant feedback. You can now adapt your search on the fly until the results match exactly what you want. In time, we may wonder how search ever worked in any other way.

Small Businesses Get Free Microsoft Antivirus on October 7

Microsoft will offer its consumer antimalware solution for Windows systems to small businesses on Thursday, Oct. 7 at no cost.

Last month, the company announced a plan to roll out Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) to small businesses for free use. However, a date wasn't specified then. On Oct. 7, the security solution can be downloaded here, and it will provide protection for up to 10 Windows-based PCs per organization at no cost, according to Microsoft's announcement issued today.

For organizations with more than 10 Windows-based PCs, Microsoft offers a series of software security products under its Forefront brand, which are specifically designed for enterprise use. Microsoft claims that the Forefront team also developed MSE, but the products are disparate. MSE is more of a stripped-down antimalware solution, with few features except for a simplified security alert screen. MSE also it lacks centralized management controls that IT departments may require.

Still, MSE offers basic antimalware protection for PCs at no cost, provided that the user has a "genuine" licensed copy of Windows. MSE users have to consent to a Microsoft scan of their operating system before being qualified to use the antivirus solution.

The one-year-old security solution is fairly new, but it's already widely used. MSE has been used by "over 30 million customers in 74 different countries around the world," according to Eric Ligman, global partner experience lead for the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Group, in a blog post.

T-Mobile reps will also be present for device showing and their service offering discussion. Microsoft developer architect will demonstrate Windows Phone 7 applications.

How to remove flash cookies !

So you have used the Disk Cleanup utility and have cleared out your browsing history, cache and cookies. Now no one can see where you’ve been on the web, right? Wrong! Flash Cookies are stored separately and most junk cleaners do not clean them! They are normally stored in C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\[Random Name].

Flash applications store their own Flash cookies which are entirely separate from normal cookies. They can be used to see what sites you’ve visited even if you’ve deleted all your history and normal cookies. There is no way to delete or even view these cookies in your web browser.

Some sites even use Flash cookies as a “backup” for normal cookies. What this means is that these sites are able to restore your regular cookies even after you’ve deleted them. The site simply reads your Flash cookies, notices that your regular cookie has been deleted and then proceeds to reinstate the normal cookies using the data stored in the Flash cookies, says Mischel Internet Security Blogs.

So how do you delete the Flash Cookies too?

1) You can manually empty or delete the directories

2) Go to the Flash Player Settings Page at Adobe. This will start a small Flash application that allows you to delete Flash cookies; but this will delete only the .sol files.

3) Or you can use Flash Cookie Remover.

Flash Cookie Remover is a portable app that removes all of the cookie information, including the names of the sites.

Samsung bets on Windows Phone 7 as it phases out Symbian

Samsung said Friday that it had committed to Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 operating system, planning to release "several" devices in the US, Europe, and Asia by the end of the year. The Wall Street Journal also indicated that the first Samsung WP7 phone would be released on AT&T on October 11, citing sources.

The Korean phone manufacturer's announcement coincides with its phasing out of Nokia's Symbian platform. Developers registered with the company received an e-mail this week alerting them that Samsung planned to drop support completely for the platform, yet another blow to the now aging OS.

Samsung did not provide details on the actual phones themselves, nor were any official release dates announced. Even though the WSJ report has given a date, other press reports have placed launch dates as far away as November 8 of this year.

While Symbian holds a little under half of the market share for smartphones sold worldwide, much of its success has to do with the fact that Nokia has been able to convince its competitors to use its platform. Losing a major manufacturer like Samsung is sure to speed its decline.

"Samsung's new Windows Phone 7 based smartphones will play a key role to reinforce Samsung's leadership in [the] smartphone market," Samsung product strategy chief WP Wong said in a statement.

WP7 is also equally as important to Microsoft. The company's mobile phone division has been struggling at best over the past few years, and has been unable to compete against RIM, the iPhone, and now Android. If Redmond's latest try doesn't succeed, it could spell trouble for its future plans in the space. "Windows Phone 7 is an important release," OEM chief Steve Guggenheimer said.

What’s new in Internet Explorer 9?

Streamlined design

The first thing you'll notice when you open Internet Explorer 9 is the compact user interface. Most command bar functions, like Print or Zoom, can now be accessed by clicking the Tools button, and your favorites appear when you click the Favorites button. Otherwise, Internet Explorer gives you the basic controls you need, and lets the web take center stage.

Pinned Sites

If you visit certain webpages regularly, Pinned Sites allows you access them directly from the taskbar on your Windows 7 desktop.

Pinning a site is simple: click the icon to the left of the web address in the address bar (or the website icon on the New Tab page) and drag it to the taskbar—the website's icon will stay there until you remove it. When you click the icon later, the website will open in Internet Explorer.

Whenever you open a pinned site, the website icon appears at the top of the browser, so you have easy access to the website home page. The Back and Forward buttons change color to match the color of the icon.

Download Manager

Download Manager is a powerful new feature that keeps a running list of the files you download from the Internet and notifies you when a file could be malicious. It also lets you pause and restart a download—if you have a slow internet connection—and shows you where to find downloaded files on your computer. You can clear the list at any time.

Enhanced tabs

Tabbed browsing allows you to move easily between multiple open webpages in a single window, but there might be times when you want to look at two tabbed pages at the same time. Tear-off tabs allow you to drag a tab out of Internet Explorer to open the tab's webpage in a new window, and Snap it for side-by-side viewing.

Tabs are also color coded to show which open webpages are related to each other—to give you a handy visual reference as you click between tabs.

The redesigned New Tab page displays the sites you visit most often and color codes them for quick navigation. A site indicator bar also shows how often you visit each site, and you can remove or hide the displayed sites anytime you like.

You can now search directly from the address bar. If you enter a website's address, you'll go directly to the website. If you enter a search term or incomplete address, you will launch a search using the currently selected search engine. Click the address bar to select your search engine from the listed icons or to add new ones.

Gmail Now Supports Multiple Logins in a Single Browser

Google has just enabled the multiple account login option for Gmail users, using the same browser. So now if you are having multiple Gmail accounts and want to access all of them in the same browser you can now do that easily with some changes, to be made in the settings of your Google account.

Here’s how you can do it:

Log-in to your Google Accounts Page and look for “Personal Settings”

Below the Personal Settings option you will be able to see Multiple Login Option (which is Off by default). Click on ‘Change’.

On that page check all the options and hit the Save Button and that’s all you need to enable multiple login Gmail accounts in a single browser.

When you enable this feature, the most significant change is that you’ll see a new drop-down next to your email address in Gmail and other supported Google products. Click on the drop-down and you can sign in to a new Google Account without signing out from the previous account.

After clicking on the “change” link, Google informs that this is an advanced feature and that it will only work for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sites, Google Reader, Google Voice, App Engine and Google Code. When multiple sign-in is enabled, a drop-down is displayed next to your email address at the top of the page, so you can quickly switch to a new account.

If you use multiple sign-in, the first account you sign in to will be your default account. If you visit other Google products that don’t support multiple accounts after you’ve signed in, you will automatically sign in to your default account for that product. If you sign out of any Google product while signed in to any account, you will be signed out of all your Google Accounts at once.

Microsoft Default Manager in Windows 7 – FAQ

Microsoft Default Manager sets search defaults on your browser and notifies you when other programs attempt to change these settings. You can also opt in or out of a program which allows Microsoft to collect additional information about your system configuration.

Here are a few things you may want to know about the Microsoft Default Manager:

If you have installed Windows Live Essentials, Microsoft Default Manager will be installed into your Computer. It is a part of the Bing toolbar.

The process is named DefMgr.exe and is located C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack\Installers\Default Manager folder. You can also access it via Start Menu > All Programs.

If you have set Bing as your default search engine, you can set the Microsoft Default Manager to inform you if any change occurs.

If you opt to notify you of changes in defaults, a new dialog box may open asking (depending on your current search engine), whether you want to change to Bing or keep you existing search search engine.

You can also opt to let you prevent any program from suggesting changes to your default search engine.

If you find that it frequently troubles you with a pop-up and/or an icon appearing in the notification area, every time you start Internet Explorer, press the Reset IE button, on the Advanced tab of Internet Options, restart Internet Explorer and see if it helps.

If you wish, you can also uninstall Microsoft Default Manager from the Control Panel, Programs and Features applet, in Windows 7.

How useful is this program!? Not really in my opinion. I would have rather liked to see more options, to set and protect a few more important Windows & IE defaults here, and not just Bing. This is simply speaking a Bing Search Default Protector!

Google: 200,000 Android devices sold each day

Google CEO Eric Schmidt while speaking at the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe, California, said that some 200,000 new Android devices are being sold & activated each day, leading to significant revenue in the form of increased mobile search traffic.

“People are finally beginning to figure out how successful Android is,” Schmidt said at the inaugural Techonomy Conference here, pointing to recent studies showing the growth of the mobile operating system outpacing even the popular iPhone.

“The number was about 100,000 (a day) about two months ago,” Schmidt said. “It looks like Android is not just phenomenal but incredibly phenomenal in its growth rate. God knows how long that will continue.”

Although Google does not get revenue from Android itself, the use of Google search on these mobile phones earns it revenue, reports CNet.

“Trust me that revenue is large enough to pay for all of Android’s activities and a whole bunch more,” he said.

Firefox's next big innovation: A new OS-like interface

During 2010, Firefox has had much of its momentum as an alternative Web browser stolen by Google Chrome. However, a new Firefox innovation called Tab Candy will make Firefox act more like a operating system, with much-improved multitasking and sharing capabilities. In fact, if the Firefox team can pull off all of the features of Tab Candy that it recently demonstrated, it would leapfrog Chrome in functionality.

The Tab Candy functionality is being spearheaded by Aza Raskin, the Head of UX at Mozilla Labs. Raskin is the son of Macintosh creator Jef Raskin and he joined Mozilla in 2008 when his software company Humanized merged with Mozilla.

Raskin said, “How many of us keep tabs open as reminders of something we want to do or read later? We’re all suffering from infoguilt. We need a way to organize browsing, to see all of our tabs at once, and focus on the task at hand.”

With that mind, here’s what Tab Candy can do:

Organize tabs into groups that you can name and position on a desktop-like view
Save tab groups to look at later
Search through your tabs
Have multiple profiles so that you can sign into the same site with different logins in two different tab groups
Share tabs or tab groups between different computers and devices
Share tabs or tab groups with other users

15 Must Have Games for the iPad

Last winter we presented 30 Must Have Games for the iPhone and iPod touch. That garnered your attention and plenty of comments, so we’re happy to present its natural sequel, 15 Must Have Games for the iPad.
As with the first feature, let us underscore that we do not consider this to be a list of the best games for the iPad, or superlative games in any specific category. Instead, this is a collection of games vetted by The Loop as being fun to play and standouts for one reason or another. So please don’t take umbrage if you don’t see your favorite game listed. But by all means use the comment section below to share with other readers your thoughts on this list and any other iPad games you think are excellent.

Flight Control HD

Firemint wasted no time, hitting launch day for the iPad with a release of Flight Control HD, an updated version of its eminently popular iPhone air traffic control game. You rack up points by safely landing a variety of airplanes and helicopters onto their runways and landing pads. If any of them collide, the game is over. Firemint did more than just scale up the graphics to work on the iPad, however – Flight Control HD also adds new maps and a fun, quirky “3D” mode that provides the illusion of depth if you wear a pair of red/blue “anaglyph” glasses (not included, of course, but available in online, novelty shops and elsewhere).

Warpgate HD

Freeverse had been working on its ambitious action/RPG game Warpgate initially as an iPhone game, but the iPad caused them to pause the iPhone version and rework it initially as an iPad release. Envisioned as a touch-based variant on Elite or as a latter-day Escape Velocity for you Mac game enthusiasts, Warpgate puts you in the pilot’s chair of an interstellar spacecraft as you seek your fortune. You can deliver cargo, become a pirate, participate in missions that move a storyline along and more. The game’s graphics are exquisite, its scale is immense – three dozen star systems, each chock-full of planets and space stations to interact with, tons of different starships to control and lots more.

Pool Pro Online 3

Despite the name this is the first installment of this long-running franchise to come to iOS. Namco’s Pool Pro Online 3 enables you to play pool – eight-ball, nine-ball and snooker – against computer controlled players or other gamers playing from iPads, iPhones, other smartphones and computers, thanks to Namco’s own proprietary multiplayer underpinnings. The game has a ton of unlockable content like new tables and background environments, new ball sets, new cue sticks and more. Guides help you line up your shot, and realistic physics let the balls carom around the table just like you’d expect.

We Rule

Ngmoco sought to capture a bit of Zynga’s Farmville mojo with We Rule, a kingdom-building game that heavily leverages Ngmoco’s Plus+ Network social networking apparatus. You build a kingdom full of shops that your friends can place orders in, and you do the same – as you interact with each other, you gain experience and increase each others’ coffers. As your levels increase, you’re able to populate your kingdom with better and more elaborate services. We Rule on iPad is much easier to use than We Rule on the iPhone because of the increased screen size, and like its iPhone counterpart, it has the virtue of being free (unless you buy “mojo” which enables you to complete orders and construction instantly).

LED Football Player vs Player

Long-time readers know there’s a special place in our heart for TouchGrove’s LED Football, which recreates the ancient LED-based Mattel Football game from the 1970s on the iPhone. So it should be no surprise then, that TouchGrove’s LED Football Player vs Player also made the list of iPad games. This game builds on the original Mattel Football-style gameplay concept by introducing a head-to-head game that two players can play on opposite sides of the iPad simultaneously. Obviously you have to be a retro-gamer (or in your 30s or 40s) to appreciate this fully, but it’s a heck of a nostalgia trip and lots of fun head-to-head play to boot.

Geometry Wars Touch

We’ll admit that we were skeptical when we first downloaded Geometry Wars Touch for the iPad. Could a game that originated on consoles, and one that seemed to be so fixed for dual thumbstick-based controllers, do well on the iPad? Color us impressed. Geometry Wars Touch is a fast and frantic arcade-style action game that features colorful and spectacular vector-style graphics. You move and fire in different directions by placing your thumbs at the bottom of the screen – “virtual” sticks are created wherever you place your fingers. It’s a clever setup that works well, and several different game modes, online leaderboards, and a new gameplay mode called “Titans” will keep you busy for quite some time.

Plants vs Zombies HD

Popcap Games’ incomparable Plants vs. Zombies has already had a hugely successful run on the Mac, PC and iPhone, so it only makes sense to bring the game to the iPad as well. And the iPad version doesn’t disappoint – it’s the same casual tower defense game we’ve all loved from the start, in which you protect your house (and your brains) from a zombie onrush by planting decidedly hostile vegetation in your yard. But truth be told, if you already have the other versions of PvZ, this isn’t a must-have – Plants vs. Zombies HD isn’t substantially different than its predecessors. It does make a fine iPad game, however, so it deserves your attention.

Need for Speed Shift

While there are more realistic racing games for the iPad, such as Firemint’s Real Racing HD, We’re more fond of EA’s Need for Speed Shift, simply because it’s so much fun to play. You can get behind the wheel of a variety of real-world cars – everything from your basic ecoracer Volkswagen Golf GTI to superexotics like the Koenigsegg CCX, earning money by winning races so you can buy new cars and upgrade them with new performance parts. You race across four circuits – Chicago, London, Tokyo and a World Tour – and can play in single-player or multiplayer races (local only, either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi).

Labyrinth II HD

Illusion Labs’ Labyrinth II HD is one our favorite ways to show people unfamiliar with the iPad how intuitive gameplay can be, thanks to the built-in accelerometer. Designed to look like a wooden maze game, you tilt the iPad back and forth to maneuver a steel ball through the maze, around pitfalls of all conceivable shapes and sizes – from the mundane, like holes in the board, to the esoteric, such as lasers and magnets. Labyrinth II HD features single player and multiplayer levels and expandability – you can download dozens of new levels to continue the gameplay.

Foosball HD

In our continuing quest to find games that are fun for players to go head-to-head on, we present Foosball HD. From the same developers who brought us Labyrinth II HD comes Foosball HD, a recreation of the classic table soccer game found in pubs, family rooms and arcades the world over. The game lets you play alone or with another person, and gameplay is simple and intuitive (you give each handle a flick to send your men spinning, kicking a soccer ball across the table pitch and hopefully into the opponent’s goal). There are six rods (three for each team), compared to eight on the full-sized tables we’ve seen, but that doesn’t diminish the game play or the fun.

The War of Eustrath HD

A tactical strategy RPG with strong anime overtones, The War of Eustrath HD puts you in control of giant fighting robots called “GEARs.” The game sprawls across 50 campaign stages with over 40 units to command, special abilities and upgrades, plus plenty of cutscenes and dialogue to keep the story moving. To that end, the dialogue is a bit stilted (and error-prone at times), but it’s a lot of fun for fans of tactical strategy.

Words with Friends HD

The folks behind Ngmoco’s We Rule also created a Scrabble-style multiplayer crossword game called Words with Friends HD. All the features you’d expect are here – double word and triple letter scores, the ability to play against friends and complete strangers, a pass and play mode that lets you use a single iPad between two players, and simple drag-and-drop mechanics. For $3, it’s a fraction of what the “official” Scrabble game costs, and just as fun.

Twin Blades HD

A gun-wielding nun killing zombies. Need we say more? This side-scrolling action game has an iPhone variant as well, but Twin Blades HD positively shines on the iPad, with rich-detailed cartoon-style graphics and animation. You have to save the town from a horde of brain-chomping zombies using weapons ranging from a scythe to a machine gun to nukes. There are bosses to confront, 10 different environments, and online score tracking through the popular OpenFeint service. If you’re a fan of kawaii-style manga or anime, you’ll love the graphics here – big heads, big eyes and adorably cute characters.

Espgaluda II

Let us say at the outset that Espgaluda II is not a native iPad game – it’s an iPhone game. It’s the only such game on our list, in fact. But that doesn’t mean it’s not awesome to play on the iPad. It’s a “bullet-hell” style shooter originally developed for the Xbox 360, and later adapted for the iPhone 3GS and third-generation iPod touch. Pixel-doubled graphics don’t diminish how awesome Espgaluda II is to play on the iPad – it’s a real arcade-style Japanese manic shooter that’s actually more fun to play on the iPad than the iPhone.
