Collegiate Inventors Competition Awards Eligibility

Students must be enrolled (or have been enrolled) full-time in any U.S. or Canadian college or university at least part of the 12-month period prior to the date the entry is submitted. In the case of a team (maximum of four students), at least one member of the team must meet the full-time eligibility criteria. The other team members must have been enrolled on a part-time basis (at a minimum) sometime during the 24-month period prior to the date the entry is submitted.

Collegiate Inventors Competition Awards Judging

The committee of judges represents various fields, including mathematics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, information technology, materials science, and medicine.

Entries are judged on the originality and inventiveness of the new idea, process, or technology. The entry must be complete, workable, and well articulated. Entries are also judged on their potential value to society (socially, environmentally, and economically), and on the scope of use. The judges' decisions are final.

CKSF Scholarships. CKSF scholarship competitions consist of one or more quizzes with topics ranging from general "common knowledge" to specific academic subjects, books, websites, and even movies. Scores are based on a combination of time and accuracy. Students with the highest scores at the end of the competition win. There are no essays or long applications to complete and a single CKSF registration is good from high school all the way through college and graduate school.

To ensure the anonymity of our participants, cover sheets and identifying information are removed after the first round. Winners’ names remain unknown to judges until after the essays have been ranked and the contest results finalized. Australian Development Scholarships. The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) is the Australian Government agency responsible for managing Australia's overseas aid program. AusAID is an Executive Agency within the Foreign Affairs and Trade portfolio and reports to the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) are long term development awards administrated of AusAID. ADS aim to bring to the long term development needs of Australia's partner countries in line with bilateral and regional agreements. They allow chances for people from acquiring states to attempt regular undergrad or postgraduate study at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education Department (TAFE) institutions.

The study and research opportunities provided by ADS develop skills and knowledge of individuals to drive change and contribute to the development outcomes of their own country.

ADS are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education institution, including any preparatory training. The following benefits generally apply:

• Full tuition fees.

• Return air travel—payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route.

• Establishment allowance—a once only payment of A$5,000 as a contribution towards as accommodation expenses, text books, study materials.

Founded in 1960, the purpose of the Society is to stimulate teaching, research and publishing in the history of geographical exploration. We now call for essays on the topics embraced by the Society's name: the history of discoveries. Essays may deal with voyages, travels, biography, history, cartography, techniques and technology, or other aspects of discovery. The primary purpose is to enlighten the reader on some aspect of the exploration of our world.

The award-winning essay will be evaluated by a panel of judges from the Society for the History of Discoveries. The panel's decision will be announced after June 1, 2012.

JUDGING CRITERIA: Primary consideration will be given to the essay's originality and its contribution to new knowledge and insights. Other considerations will be the author's demonstration of the relevance of the subject, the cogency of the presentation and the documentation, and the stylistic quality of the essay. In the case of a tie, two awards may be given at the discretion of the judges. If no submission is judged to be either appropriate or sufficiently meritorious, the Society reserves the right to make no award.

NOTE: Submissions will be disqualified if: a) their subject is not relevant to the history of discoveries as outlined above or to the general history of geographic exploration; b) adequate and appropriate citations (foot/endnotes) are not included c) the author is not currently enrolled as an undergraduate or enrolled in or accepted to a graduate program at the time of submission.

THE AWARD. The winner will receive a prize of $600. The winner will be invited to make an oral presentation about the paper at the annual meeting of the Society for the History of Discoveries. The 2012 meeting will be held at the Huntington Library/Pasadena, California, from September 27-30.
