The Republic of the Philippines, an island nation located in the Malay archipelago in Southeast Asia, comprising of 7,107 islands, collectively known as Philippine Archipelago, has a total area of nearly 300,000 square kilometers to it's credit. The country, named "Las Islas Felipinas" after King Philip II of Spain, fell prey to Spanish colonialism in 1565. The colonial rule lasted for three long centuries and ended after Philippine Revolution of 1896. But independence, the most prized political ambition of modern times, was not forthcoming for it yet. It was ceded to the US in 1898 in the wake of the Spanish-American War, and it was only in 1946 that they saw the run of independence rise after Japanese occupation in World War II. However, it was as late as in 1992 that the US finally closed its last military bases on the islands and left the Philippine soil for good. Manila is now the capital of Philippines. The history of the Philippines can be divided into four distinct phases: the pre-Spanish period (before 1521); the Spanish period (1521-1898); the American period (1898-1946); and the post-independence period (1946-present).

The video above best describes about the Philippines. The Capital of the Philippines is Manila where many of Filipinos live. It's a pity that Manila is often disparaged, as there's much here to like. For one, all the adjectives often used to describe the Philippines - jovial, laid back, casual, corrupt, shambolic, earnest and more are on display here more than anywhere else in the country. It's a truly teeming metropolis that gets bigger each day, both in population, with people pouring in from the hinterlands, and size, as new developments in all directions swallow up villages and rice fields.Manila can be a very discombobulated place, for it is really just a collection of towns with no definable centre. The walled Intramuros area was the traditional centre of Manila, but was mostly wiped out in WWII and has never recovered. Binondo, Quiapo, Ermita and Malate have never been more than a supporting cast for a star that doesn't exist. Still, you may well find lots of fun in Ermita and Malate, while Binondo and Quiapo have a certain raw energy and unique markets. And Intramuros is a good place to explore, just to find the bones of its past.

Other parts of town are more lively. At the centre of modern Manila is Makati, the commercial centre for the country. Here, in almost orderly surroundings, you can shop, eat and drink to your heart's content. It transcends the generic-mall syndrome by having its own unique vibe that comes from the hordes of locals who come here to work, relax and play. As many will tell you, 'this is the Manila we wish we had'.

Rather than seeing Manila as an amorphous mass, focus instead on enjoying its individual areas, and you will start to get a feel for the greater Manila, which really is a sum of its parts. The Philippine economy has shown a great degree of resilience, which is generally attributed to low foreign inflows and the fact that Philippines' is a largely agriculture-based economy. Economic set backs could not throw the Philippine economy out of gear when it struck the nation in 1999. The growth rate came down to 3 percent in 1999 but rose remarkably to 4 percent in 2000, and by 2004 the Philippine had registered an admirable 6 percent growth recovering from the East Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s.

Consisting of nearly around 7,107 islands, Philippines forms an archipelago bounded by sea on the east, west and the south. Covering a total area of 3, 00, 000 square kilometers, the entire cluster of islands is divided into three distinctive groups Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. With so much to explore the only question that comes to mind is When to go to Philippines.

With a rugged terrain the region is predominantly volcanic giving rise to some awesome geographical features and water bodies which has given rise to a lot of exciting water sports. Every island has their own specialty but the spirit of hospitality is the same anywhere you go.

The islands are inhabited by the local tribes practicing occupations which have helped in keeping the traditional arts and crafts of the country alive.

In terms of economic growth too the country is making a gradual progress. The country has a strong agricultural base as the volcanic activities have given rise to extensive tracts of fertile lands which produces a great variety of crops like rice, corn, sugarcane and fruits like bananas and pine apples.

The favorable geographical conditions have boosted up the tourism sector and tourists are keen to visit this exotic island location. However a detailed knowledge about the climate will surely help in deciding when to go to Philippines.

The general climate is tropical with hot and humid conditions. The country experiences heavy rainfall during the rainy season often accompanied by typhoons as well as high temperatures during the summer months.

Philippines enjoy three distinctive seasons:

Summer Season- March to May
Winter Season- December to February
Monsoon Season- June to November

So the best time to visit Philippines is during the months of November to March and April. The weather is dry and pleasant as the trade winds bring no rainfall.
The Republic of Philippines is a truly remarkable country with a culture as rich as its glorious past fraught by many foreign influences like that of the Spanish and the American. Despite of being colonized to foreign powers, the country has remained unchanged; it has not compromised with its authenticity, its decorum, code of conduct and culture and has retained its typical Filipino spirit. Rather what it has done is, it has imbibed the best of both the worlds and have shaped what we know today as the Republic of Philippines.

For those interested in visiting the exotic island destination and enjoying to their fullest, note should be made of the Tourist Information that is available. Your holiday would be without any trouble and a memorable one.

Reviving from the influences of the colonizers, the country has invited and seen growth and development in every phase. Today, it has got its own independent place under the blue skies and has succeeded in gaining the status of an important commercial center as well as a hot tourist destination. Mother Nature has been generous in Philippines case, it has got the best of sandy beaches, an awesome spread of lush green tropical rain forests, islands which are like pearls in the depth of the ocean, an envious collection of corals and flora and fauna, fresh fruits and a good catch from the sea. For the tourists it has more on offer- shopping malls, night life and adventure sports. The country now has become self sufficient and is proud of the excellence achieved in the field of communication, business and medical services.

In the world map therefore Philippines has really carved out a niche for itself. The tourism of the country has seen a boost in recent years and hopes to see a steady growth in the future.
It generally refers to a specific region of the Earth; that has accepted the same standard time known to be the local time. However in deciding the time zones one standard factor is always kept in mind and that is the Greenwich Mean Time. The Greenwich Mean Time or GMT refers to the ‘mean solar time’ at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich in England.

Philippine Time Zone or the Philippine Time refers to the term by which Philippine describes or denotes its place among the other time zones in the world. With is geographical location of being situated in the east of the Prime Meridian Philippines falls in the UTC+ 8 time zone. That is, the country has only one time zone, 120 degrees East Meridian Time, which is calculated to be 8 hours advance of the Greenwich Mean Time or GMT.

However the standard time in Philippines is calculated in relation to the current time in Manila. Time differences may vary according to the regions as such it is seen that the time in Davao City is 15 minutes ahead of what is recorded in the capital City of Manila. The Philippine Standard Time defining procedure was instituted according to the law describing the Metric System (Batas Pambansa). It got its approval on 2nd December, 1978 and was put to use in 1st January, 1983.

Greet with a smile or a handshake whenever you meet someone you know on the road. When visiting anyone’s house to attain a social function greet the eldest in the family first and take a small gift as a mark of gratitude.

Always ask by which name the person concerned would like to be addressed. Some might want a formal approach while some may be preferred to be called by their double names as having multiple names is common in Philippines.

Direct eye contact should be avoided as staring for a long time is a mark of indecency and rudeness.
Do develop personal relation outside the office. Indulge in casual conversations and get to know each other in the personal level as it is an important part of the business culture.
Do dress in perfect formal attire when attending a business meeting. Be confident and respectful towards your seniors.
Do make the business appointments weeks before the actual meeting. Before arrival make it a point to confirm the appointment.
Don’t ask the cause of late arrival on the part of your Filipino business associate. It is a common practice among them but you should always arrive on time. The same should be followed if the meeting finishes late.
Don’t talk in the middle of a conversation or when your colleague is speaking at a meeting.
University
of Santo Tomas in Philippines or the Pontifical and Royal University
of Santo Tomas, The Catholic University of the Philippines is known as
one of the most populous Catholic universities in the world. A private
Roman Catholic university by the Order of Preachers in Manila,
University of Santo Tomas started functioning from April 28, 1611.
Located in Sampaloc district, you will find many sovereign colleges,
schools and institutes of undergraduate and postgraduate courses,
functioning under this university. While the university now functioned
from the walled city of Intramuros earlier, other campuses will soon
function from Sta. Rosa, Laguna, General Santos City and Negombo, Sri
Lanka.

History of University of Santo Tomas in Philippines
says that Reverend Miguel de Benavides, O.P., the third Archbishop of
Manila, who came to the Philippines on the first Dominican mission in
1587, donated his property worth 1,500 pesos so that a seat of higher
learning could be established. After a series of measures, a full
fledged university- Colegio de Santo Tomas formally called Pontifical
and Royal University of Santo Tomas, The Catholic University of the
Philippines, came into existence on November 20, 1645, which today is
known as University of Santo Tomas in Philippines.

The Hanging Coffins of Sagada in Philippines

The Sagadan landscape in Philippines is punctuated by limestone cliffs
with an avenue o f pine trees. Four or five coffins are arranged in a
bundle on these cliffs. The oldest coffin dates back to more than a
century and the latest one was added decades ago. The Hanging coffins of
Sagada in Philippines are a major tourist attraction. Some of the
coffins are arranged neatly while some are randomly heaped. According to
an age-old practice of the people of Sagada, the burial practice
involved the arranging of the corpse of their relatives in caves after
carefully preparing a hollowed out log. The people of Sagada prefer
being buried in the cliffs than in grounds. This practice has prevailed
over 2,000 years.

Features of the Hanging Coffins of Sagada in Philippines:

The coffins are found in places that are difficult to reach and only touched by the elements of nature.

The coffins are made by the elderly before their demise. If they are
weak of suffering from major ailments their children or other close
relatives undertake the work of building the coffin. The practice
entails placing the bodies into a comfortable position of the coffin.
Bones are often cracked and broken with the completion of the process.

After the dead bodies are put inside the coffins, they are
brought to the cliffs and are kept near the coffins of their

Located
off the southeast tip of Cebu in Philippines, Sumilon Island gained
limelight from the entire world when the first marine sanctuary in the
country was built here. Sumilon Island in Philippines hosted the
marine sanctuary in 1974 under the supervision and know-how of
Silliman University’s marine laboratory. Sumilon Island Marine
Sanctuary is now cited as the best locale of preserving coral reef and
enhances reef fisheries management.

Ten years ago, the
destructive fishing practices were stopped till the fishery increased.
This miraculous increase in the fish catch, impressed scientists,
reef managers and fishers and led to boom in export of fish and their
larvae till the rules of the fish sanctuary on Sumilon were broken in
1984. It was much later the through eventual management of the area,
the biological balance of the area including the preservation of coral
reef and reef fisheries management could be achieved.

If you visit the Sumilon Island in Philippines between December and May, you may also spot rays, tuna and jacks and sharks.
Subterranean River National Park in Philippines

Santuario de San Antonio in Philippines was built by the Franciscans
when their original church in Intramuros of Manila, was ruined by the
ravages caused by World War II towards its end. As soon as the new
santuario or sanctuary was constructed, a statue of Saint Anthony was
transported from the original church in Intramuros, which managed to
resist the bombing effect of the war.

If you visit McKinley Road
in Forbes Park, you will often find the Church thronged by people.
Highly revered and esteemed by the society, Santuario de San Antonio
in Philippines hosts a number of social and religious occasions like
christenings, weddings and funerals. Interestingly enough, most of the
posh and rich families of Manila, specially from Forbes Park and
Dasmarinas Village, choose this church for observing various events,
whether of grief or happiness, in the presence of Saint Anthony God.

San Sebastian Church in Philippines

Fast Facts of San Sebastian Church in Philippines

Location: Plaza del Carmen, Manila 1011, Philippines
Phone Number: +63 2 523 8411 (Tourism Board)
San Sebastian Church in Philippines is one of the rarest specimens of
Gothic architectural splendor and the only sample in Asia. Located in
Quiapo, a old district in Manila, this church is entirely made of
steel. Hidden amidst a row of old houses in the locality, the steel
frame and panels of San Sebastian Church speak of the immensity of the
church. Societe Anonyme's foundry in Binche, Belgium manufactured the
steel parts, which were brought to Manila first on June 12, 1888. It
took two years to collect the steel parts for the local craftsmen who
were later helped by the Belgian firm in constructing the San Sebastian
Church. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, this church was bestowed with the
status of minor basilica on June 24, 1890. Within a year, it was
opened.
You will spot groined vaults, steel parts of columns,
walls and ceiling resembling the architectural style of Filipino
artist Lorenzo Rocha. There are also confessionals, pulpit, altars,
statues of holy men and women- tuned to the Gothic style blended with
innovations of 19th century.

San Sebastian Church in Philippines
has been accorded the status of National Historical Landmark as well
as one of the Most Endangered Sites in the World by the World
Monuments Watch in 1998.

San Pedro Cathedral in Philippines

San Pedro Cathedral in Philippines is on of the few churches in the
country, which were bestowed with special protective status of National
Cultural Treasures by the Philippine National Commission for Culture and
the Arts. Interestingly enough, this special designation doesn’t only
speak about the historical significance of 25 other churches chosen
across Philippines for unique protection but also reflects the emphasis
on the local specialty of the church, which has imbibed regional and
geographical influences.

Located at the corner of San Pedro Street
and CM Recto Avenue in Davao City, this church was named after the
patron saint of the city, San Pedro. San Pedro Cathedral was one of
the spectacular churches constructed during the Spanish colonial
period. This church was built in 1847 by Don Jose Uyanguren, who was
popular as the ‘Spanish Conquistador of Davao’ during the Spanish era.

As
you visit San Pedro Cathedral in Philippines, you will spot the
original altar in the right wing of the cathedral. You must also
notice that the altar has been preserved meticulously in the church in
a measure of respect. You will also be impressed by the interiors of
the church adorned with ancient images of the saint, San Pedro and St.
You must have heard about the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife
Sanctuary. It was built by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation.
Philippine Tarsier is a nocturnal animal, which is a small creature
frequent in Bohol. An ancient creature dated back to 45 million years,
tarsier is the oldest terrestrial species in the Philippines. With
varieties of local names like "mamag", "mago", "magau", "maomag",
"malmag", and "magatilok-iok", the Philippine tarsier can also be
found on the islands of Samar, Leyte and Mindanao.

The Philippine
Tarsier Foundation was established in 1996 to protect the tarsier,
which in turn earmarked a sanctuary of 167 hectares across Corella and
Sikatuna in Bohol. Before exploring Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife
Sanctuary, you should visit the information center of the sanctuary
where you will get plenty of details about the tarsier. You can also
buy tarsier t-shirts and toys from the souvenir shop that sells books,
pictures, a replica of the sanctuary and a partial skeleton of a
tarsier.

There is a special area in Philippine Tarsier and
Wildlife Sanctuary separated from the dense forest surrounding it by a
fence, where ten tarsiers are rehabilitated. You can spot the
tarsiers in various postures like sitting in a branch, swinging from
the tree trunk or strolling around in free spirit.
