Chrome takes no. 2 spot in UK displacing FireFox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Google's Chrome became the number two browser in the UK during the month of July for the first time, according to StatCounter, the free website analytics company. The firm's research arm StatCounter Global Stats reports that Chrome took 22.1% of the UK market, up from 3.9% in July 2009. In the same period Microsoft's Internet Explorer fell significantly from 61% to 46% globally and Firefox dropped slightly from 27% to 22%.

"Chrome continues to make significant gains in the browser market going from under 4% two years ago to over 20% today," commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter. "Despite falling market share Internet Explorer still leads in the browser war but the next few months will be interesting to watch with Chrome and Firefox almost neck and neck."

Chrome is also performing particularly well in Ireland where it overtook Firefox in May to become the number two browser. In July it reached 27.7%, ahead of Firefox's 24.2% but still behind IE at 39.9%.

StatCounter Global Stats are based on aggregate data collected on a sample exceeding 15 billion page views per month (830 million from the UK and Ireland) from the StatCounter network of more than three million websites.

There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages that each operating system has. One has the most compatibility with current software, one has the most polish, and one has both but isn’t as supported. OK, maybe Linux doesn’t always have both, but recently it does carry its own class of design and polish. This is especially true for systems like Ubuntu where the developers are going out of their way to create the “next desktop”.

Let’s say that you are a Windows user because all of your programs work with it, but you like how the new release of Ubuntu, 11.04 “Natty Narwhal” looks.

Here's A Way

May I introduce to you the Ubuntu Skin Pack. This handy program will install (and even download other necessary components) in order to make your desktop look and operate more like Ubuntu. Although it is not perfect (show me some kind of transformation pack that is!), it does do a great job of recreating the experience and theme. The best way for you to enjoy it is to install the pack! Please note that this works only in Windows 7.

Installation

First off, you should download the setup file to a place where you can easily find it. Once the download completes, head on over to that folder and double-click the setup file to launch it. The setup itself is easy and doesn’t really have any hidden items with it. Just click through it, making sure that everything is selected in order to get the full experience. While the setup is doing its thing, it’ll eventually poke you about installing a component that it needs for smooth operation. Go ahead and click yes so that it’ll automatically install and download that component for you as well. When the entire setup completes, go ahead and restart your machine.

Features

In case you use a password on your account, or have multiple accounts on your machine, you may notice some changes. At the bottom, “Windows 7″ is now replaced with “Ubuntu 11.04″.

Once you get to your desktop, you’ll see that it looks very similar to the Ubuntu desktop. The Ubuntu icon is in the top-left corner, which is now your new place to launch the re-themed start menu. The dock on the left side (created by a program called Rainmeter) also recreates a nice visual theme of the actual Unity dock. Don’t try to do a lot of things with it that are featured in Unity, because there isn’t very much you can do to mess around with it, aside from poking around in the configuration file. Speaking of which, Rainmeter may bug you about a misplaced configuration file. Just follow its instructions and it should go away.

There’s not a whole lot else to it. You can have virtual desktops thanks to VirtualWin. Many windows should fit right in with the theme, as long as they’re not those notoriously famous programs that decide to create their own complete theme that stick out from the rest. For everything else, I’ll let the screenshots do the talking.

Installing Samba from Synaptic Package Manager

1…Open the Synaptic Package Manager and search for the package “samba”.

2…Mark the Package for installation and click on “Apply”.

1…Open the Ubuntu Software Center and search for the software “samba”

2…Click on “Install” and wait for some time until it gets installed.

Installing from Terminal

Open the terminal (press Alt+Ctrl+T)and type the following command

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal has been a revelation of sorts in terms of UI improvements it brought to the table. One of the highlights of the new Unity UI is the launcher that sits on the left side of Ubuntu 11.04 Unity desktop. Now I can access my most favorite apps much more faster and my desktop will remain clean at the same time. But i didn't noticed the limitations of Unity launcher until I implemented the following quicklists which further enhanced the Ubuntu Unity launcher functionality. I am pretty darn sure that you are also going to love these awesome Unity launcher improvements as I did.
Add Your Favorite Places as Quicklists for Home Icon in Unity

Copy 'Home Folder' launcher file to your home directory. For that, you need to open Terminal(Unity Shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + T) and copy-paste the following commands.

cp /usr/share/applications/nautilus-home.desktop ~/.local/share/applications

Open the file in your favorite text editor. I am using Gedit here.

gedit ~/.local/share/applications/nautilus-home.desktop

Now replace the content of the file with the following text.

Sharing between VMWare's ubuntu 11.04 and host windows 7

Sometimes, you just have to move files from your VirtualBox’s Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machines to a Windows 7 host, but how? It’s simple really! There are couple ways of doing it, but I prefer to keep it simple. The steps are below:

1.Start VirtualBox

2.Highlight a virtual machine in the list of virtual machines

3.Click on Settings

4.Go to Shared Folders

5.Click on Add Shared Folders

6.From drop down box of Folder Path, choose Other

7.Pick a folder from your system that you have permission to access

8.Check the box that says Auto mount

9.Click OK button

10.Click OK button again to save everything

11.Start your Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine (i.e., the one you have added a shared folder for

12.Inside Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine, open up Control Center >> System >> Users and Groups

13.Click on Manage Groups

14.Scroll down till you see a group labeled as vboxsf, highlight it, and then click on Properties

15.Place a check mark inside a box next to the user that you want to give access to shared folder(s)

16.Click OK, and you have to enter your sudo’s password or root password or just a password of a user who has administrative authority

17.Navigate to folder/directory labeled as media inside Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine using either Nautilus or Terminal

18.Change into the directory which begins with sf_, because a folder/directory inside media folder/directory that has sf_ prefix is a shared folder that you created earlier using VirtualBox.

19.If using Nautilus, you can right click on empty space to create a folder with a folder name of your choosing. If using Terminal, you can execute this command [mkdir Testing]. Remember, you should do this as a normal user, a user which you’d gave permission to access this shared folder a bit earlier using Ubuntu. If you can create a test folder with a folder name of your choosing inside the directory with prefix sf_ in folder/directory media, it means you are officially able to transfer files and folders inside Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine to your Windows 7 host.

20.To double check to see if everything is working, navigate to your Windows 7 host and go to the shared folder that you’d allowed VirtualBox to share it with Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine earlier. If everything is working out, you should now see a test folder/directory you had created in step 19

That’s it! Have fun moving files from your Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine(s) to your Windows 7 Host and vice versa

Finally Australian citizens can enjoy Google Voice service which is now available in the country though not with full features which their US counterparts enjoy but at least can have something to cheer about.

Citizens can also use video chat feature making additional video chat and text chat redundant.

Rates follow as call to landlines within Australia will cost US$0.02/min and call to mobile will charge US$0.14/min comparing with skype rates which stands at AU$0.27/min and AU$0.03 to landline and mobile respectively .

Google's immense hard word seems to be paying off with its new social venture Google+ hits 25 million users roughly in one month period making it fastest growing social website in the history of internet surpassing other social giants like facebook, twitter, Myspace.

Google+ also reached 20 million users in just 3 weeks as earliar reported.

Study data released by comScore announced that Google+ is new king in the social arena attracting 25 million users in less than a month, making it fastest growing website to reach that audience size.

According to it , Google+ is growing at brisk pace of 1 million visitors a day reaching 25 million users till July 24.

Apple is top manufacturer but Android is top os

According to June data from Nielsen, Google’s Android operating system (OS) now claims the largest share of the U.S. consumer smartphone market with 39 percent. Apple’s iOS is in second place with 28 percent, while RIM Blackberry is down to 20 percent.

However, because Apple is the only company manufacturing smartphones with the iOS operating system, it is clearly the top smartphone manufacturer in the United States. Other leading manufacturers include HTC, whose Android phones represents 14 percent of the smartphone market and whose Windows Mobile/WP7 devices account for 6 percent of the market; and Motorola, whose Android devices are owned by 11 percent of smartphone consumers. Samsung’s Android devices are used by 8 percent of smartphone owners while their Windows Mobile/WP7 phones are used by 2 percent of smartphone owners.

Apple is is world's largest smartphone vender by volume , by %age share , units selling company .that's no surprise not even that NOKIA is down to third posotion.

Rise of Internet in China ,450 million users:A Look

CNNIC ,China Internet Information Network Center , is the official Chinese state agency in charge of registering and managing internet domains (.CN) and traffic. Every six months, the research department of CNNIC publishes a set of reports providing the latest information on the development of China’s internet sector. They are considered the most detailed source of data, but also the least credible. Nevertheless, CNNIC’s semi-annual reports do provide an overview of China’s internet trends and insights to its future.

General Internet Population

In July, CNNIC released its 28th edition of China’s Internet Development Report, recording growth of the general internet population and across each sector, from group-buying to social networking. Overall, China’s netizens reached 485 million users by the end of June, almost twice America’s 245 million netizens. Growth rates are now declining every half-year, with a current internet penetration rate of 36.2%.

China’s Internet Users are Young

Predictably, when internet users are broken down according to age groups, the youth population (ages 10-29) dominated with 56.8% penetration. Statistics show that older demographic groups have been slow to adopt the internet, although it’s interesting to see a slight increase within the 50-59 year-old bracket. Over 57% of China’s internet users are under 30.

Mobile Internet Rising

Mobile internet users are continuing to grow, with 317.68 million current users. But like the general internet population, its growth is also on a declining trend (red doted line), signaling a slow down of Chinese internet growth. According to some analysts, these are pre-symptoms of a market bubble that could take the form of a Chinese dot-com crisis.

China’s population is nearing 1.4 billion, but a large cross-section of its population is still not accessing the internet. CNNIC called attention to six main reasons why in the graph below.

Google buys patents from IBM to save itself from lawsuites

Google has recently purchased patents from IBM in order to defend itself from lawsuites as Google already is far behind in acquiring patents while other companies like Apple has stock of patents which it already using against Samsung and Microsoft also doing same.

The patents reportedly involve the "fabrication and architecture of memory and microprocessing chips," computer architecture including servers and routers and online search engines, among other things. SEO stands for search engine optimization, or the practice of structuring websites and content so they rank well on search engines like Google

As of now , there is no information on the prices of patents as Google spokesperson reportedly clearly declined and not even disclosed that which patents among bought are useful against lawsuites

Google faces patent lawsuits for many of its services, including its Android mobile-device operating system, which has become a bigger target as its world-wide popularity has risen. It is unclear whether any current lawsuits pose a threat to future revenue generated by Google's new technologies..

Google has nearly $40 billion in cash, giving it the flexibility to make purchases. But it was outbid earlier this month when a coalition of companies that compete with Android, including Apple , and Microsoft , agreed to buy a portfolio of some 6,000 patents owned by Nortel Networks Corp. for $4.5 billion. That price was five times the $900 million Google had initially offered in an early bid for the patents.

Google's quietly pitter-pattering its acquisitive ways back into the controversial realm of facial recognition technology. To do that, the company busted out its oversized wallet to fold Pittsburgh-based PittPatt into the Mountain View borg. Founded by a trio of PhD's from Carnegie Mellon University, this three-man strong outfit specializes in the sort of object recognition software you've come to know as "tagging." Is this a reversal of the Do No Evil tech giant's prior waffling on the dubious visioning tech, or just another massive weapon in its social networking crusade against Facebook? We'd err on the side of both, although the company's new employees aren't exactly playing their cards for us to see. A brief statement on the
triumvirate's site makes vague mention of "computer vision technology" being core to Google's products and points to the tech's planned integration in photo, video and mobile applications. So, basically, expect to see Picasa, Goggles, YouTube and Google+ watchyou as you flaunt your internet celebrity ways to that front-facing camera.

Google Inc is introducing a credit card for its advertising customers, offering its clients a credit line to try and drum up business as competition in the online ad market heats up.

The AdWords Business credit card marks Google's first foray into the world of vendor financing, common among hardware makers such as IBM Corp. It lets marketers spend more on its search ads when the need arises.Google is offering the card to select US clients with what it calls a competitive interest rate, an ample credit line and no annual fee. The catch: It can only be used to buy search advertising on the world’s No 1 internet search engine.

Claire Johnson, vice-president of global online sales at Google, says the credit card has been designed to help small and medium-sized businesses that advertise on Google but who often don't have the funds to support a heavy ad campaign ahead of a big sales season, such as Valentine’s Day or Halloween.
'They are resource-constrained and they are often cash flow-strapped. Many of them are trying to grow a business without the kind of means that, say, your classic company has,” she said.

Consumer-oriented companies like Macy's Inc and Amazon.com Inc have offered credit cards for years to drive purchases, inspire customer loyalty and track spending habits. Some retailers that own their own credit card operations, like Nordstrom Inc, can also earn some interest income. Google has begun emailing invitations offering the credit card to some of its customers. The card will initially be available as a “beta” test, available to select users.

CREDIT CHECK

Google earns 96 per cent of its revenue from advertising, the vast majority of which comes from the small ads that appear alongside its search results, known as AdWords. But its business faces rising competition from a search alliance between Microsoft Corp and Yahoo Inc, as well as from social networking service Facebook, which is becoming popular with small and large advertisers alike.
The AdWords card is a MasterCard that will be issued through the World Financial Capital Bank. The card's 8.99 per cent annual percentage rate is the ongoing rate, and not an introductory rate, says Google.
Google is keeping quiet on many other details, including the minimum and maximum credit lines available (Google says it will vary by the cardholder) and the number of people to whom the card will be offered.

Brent Callinicos, Google's Treasurer, says the credit card will be offered to a “statistically significant” number of people as Google examines the results of how its availability affects customer spending behaviour.

“Even though (availability) will skew toward the smaller businesses, obviously we want to cast a wide enough net so we can see what resonates depending on your historical monthly spend,” said Callinicos.
Google would evaluate customers’ creditworthiness through internal efforts and a financial partner, he said.

The effort to offer a credit card comes as Google’s cash pile continues to grow, reaching $39.1 billion in cash and marketable securities as of June 30. Google does not pay a dividend or participate in any ongoing share repurchase programme. “Obviously, we have a robust balance sheet, so this is a way for us to use that balance sheet to help our customers,” Callinicos said.

But he stressed that the main motive for the card was to provide loans to Google customers in an economic environment in which getting credit could be tough. “It isn't a financial engineering project that we came up with and said this would be cool to do. It’s a customer need,” he said.
One popular perk missing from Google's credit card is the ability to rack up airline miles. Callinicos said he did not think the omission would hurt the card's appeal.

“I think if you had the choice of an 18 per cent credit card and miles versus an 8.99 per cent credit card and no miles, it’s a pretty easy choice,” he said.

It was only last week when Google's new baby Google reached to 10 million users and now in just 1 week after it added a million more.

Last week Google CEO Larry Page told on his Google + page that their new venture has hit 10 million users in just record time of two weeks.

A study by online measurement company ComScore revealed it had doubled that number in the past seven days, despite the service remaining an invitation-only affair.

'It would be difficult to think of many sites that reached such a large number in such a short period of time,' he said.

As Google does have a built-in visitor base of more than one billion to work with, so there is clearly potential to convert a high number of users to its new social tool - even if it is still invite-only.

In 20 million users US ,India and UK account the most.

Preparing Your Mac for Mac OS X Lion

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is right around the corner. Is your Mac ready?

About a week and a half ago, Apple released the Golden Master version of Lion to Apple Developers. The final version is expected to hit the Mac App Store soon — perhaps in the next few days.

Mac OS X Lion will bring lots of new features to the Mac operating system, including enhanced multi-touch gesture support, the ability to swipe between fullscreen apps and a new auto-save system.

Upgrading an operating system can be a time-consuming process — no matter how easy the manufacturer tries to make it. To limit the potential headaches, we’ve put together this guide that should help you get your Mac ready for Lion.

Step 1: Check for System and Application Updates

Before upgrading to Lion, it’s important to check for any major software updates to both your operating system and to the programs and devices you use frequently.

A few weeks ago, Apple released Mac OS X 10.6.8. This release was intended to help prepare users for Mac OS X Lion; it’s a required update before you can download Lion from the Mac App Store.

To update your system, click on the Apple menu and select “Software Update.” Go ahead and install any of the updates for your system and official Apple applications.

Next, check for available updates in your frequently used programs. A nice feature of the Mac App Store is that it makes it easy to find updates for programs you’ve purchased or installed. Just click on the “Updates” button in Mac App Store’s toolbar.

For other apps, lots of developers utilize various update frameworks within their applications and can alert users, when launched, that an update is available.

One of my longtime favorite Mac utilities is AppFresh. AppFresh is a free tool that scours your system for apps, compares them to the latest versions online and lets you install updates all in one convenient place.

Certain apps and utilities will need to be updated to work with Lion, so it’s important to make sure you are running the latest versions.

If you are using an older printer or scanner, you might want to determine if the manufacturer has updated drivers or has a plan for Lion compatibility.

2. Clear Up Some Disk Space

Lion is about a 4GB download, and to be on the safe side, it’s probably a good idea to have at least 10 – 12 GB of free disk space before installing the update.

Using a program like DaisyDisk or DiskWave is an efficient way to figure out what files and folders are taking up the most space. You can either back up some of those files to other drives or to places such as Dropbox, or delete unused apps or downloads.

3. Check App Compatibility

With Lion, Apple is making some changes to the way programs work and interact. As a result, not all programs that run in Snow Leopard are going to work flawlessly in Lion.

Fortunately, most app developers are already preparing and releasing updates and many more will have updates ready as soon as Lion ships. To get an idea of what apps will work, what apps won’t and what apps might “mostly work,” check out the community wiki, RoardingApps.

RoaringApps is a database/compatibility wiki for apps and Mac OS X Lion. Users of the Lion Developer Previews and the Golden Master can comment on how well (or how poorly) apps work with Lion.

I’ve found this resource to be quite helpful, especially for workarounds and potential fixes for apps that might not be fully Lion compatible.

Step 4. Say Goodbye to PowerPC Apps

A larger issue for longtime Mac users is that with Lion, Apple is officially dropping support for Rosetta. Rosetta was a technology that Apple developed to help users run older PowerPC apps on Intel Macs. Over the last five years, most major Mac apps have been updated or rewritten to work natively as Intel Mac apps or as universal binaries.

A handful of older applications (older versions of Adobe Creative Suite and Quicken 2007 are two frequently cited examples) will not work with Mac OS X Lion. Users will need to find replacement apps, upgrade to newer versions or keep a second-hard drive around to boot into Snow Leopard when needed.

To find out if any of the apps you frequently use require Rosetta (and thus won’t work with Lion), you can follow the instructions Christopher Breen wrote for Macworld. The key is to look for any PowerPC apps. If you find them, prepare for them not to work in Lion and consider looking for replacements.

Step 5. Backup, Backup, Backup

The last step in preparing your Mac for Lion is to do a serious backup of your system disk. While operating system upgrades are less error-prone than in the past, there’s nothing worse than doing an update and then having a problem with accessing files or folders or installing software.

If you don’t already have a hard drive dedicated to backup, pick one up before you upgrade to Lion. Drive space is inexpensive these days. I was able to pick up a 1TB FireWire 800/USB 2.0 2.5″ hard drive for about $150 two weeks ago. My MacBook Pro only has a 250GB hard drive, so I can partition that drive and use it as both a Time Machine backup and with Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup, plus still have plenty of room for additional storage space.

Time Machine

Fortunately, creating a backup of your system (something you should be doing regularly anyway) is easy in Mac OS X. When Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard was released in 2007, one of the flagship features was the debut of Time Machine. Time Machine makes it easy to make continuous backups of your files, folders and applications.

To get started with Time Machine, just open up the app in your Applications folder or from its panel in System Preferences. If you have never used Time Machine before, just plug in a hard drive, and tell Time Machine that you want to use that drive (or a partition on that drive) for your backups.

Bootable Backup Disks

A Time Machine backup can be useful for restoring old files or applications after you upgrade to Lion, especially if you choose to do a clean install (yes, you can do a clean install of Lion, it just takes a tad more work. We’ll have a full guide ready as soon as Lion is available in the Mac App Store.), but we recommend creating a bootable clone of your current hard drive too.

Using a program such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, you can quickly make a bootable backup of your hard drive.

In a worst-case scenario, you can boot from your external backup drive and use that as your main hard drive (if needed). Mac OS X Lion will no longer support older PowerPC Mac apps using Rosetta. As a result, users who still need to access an old program or old file formats should make sure they have a bootable copy of Snow Leopard around, just in case.

SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner are both great apps. Carbon Copy Cloner is free (though if you find it valuable, please consider donating — it’s a truly fantastic app), while SuperDuper is $27.95 to unlock its more advanced features.

To use Carbon Copy Cloner to create an exact replica of your current hard drive, launch the app and then select your “Source Disk,” which is your startup volume.

Select your external hard drive (or specific partition) as your “Target Disk.” By default, this will make an exact backup of all of your files, folders and applications and make the hard drive bootable. Click the Clone button and you’re done. You might want to take a break and do some reading or spend time with the family — the backup process can take a while.

Microsoft posted record revenue despite drowning trend for windows ,PCs

Microsoft’s fourth quarter and full-year revenue is quite outstanding but most important thing is sales of windows and PCs still going down thanks to Aplle;s ipad and ipad 2.

Microsoft reported Q4 revenues of $17.4 billion, an 8% jump over the same quarter in 2010. Revenues for its fiscal year, which ended June 30, were also a record $69.9 billion, up 12% from fiscal 2010.
The company’s net income for the quarter was $5.87 billion. For the year, it was $23.2 billion. Those were increases of 30% and 23%, respectively.

Bright spots for fiscal 2011 included the Microsoft Business Division, which grew its revenues 16% for the year, and Server & Tools, which expanded 11%. Online Services revenues also jumped 15%, driven by the growth of Bing, the company’s search engine. Entertainment & Devices grew its revenues 45% for the year thanks to the successful Kinect introduction and continued strong sales for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live.
On the other hand, Windows and Windows Live revenues fell 2% for the year even though Windows 7 sold more than 400 million licenses. Microsoft estimates that sales of PCs to consumers fell 1% for the fiscal year, though sales of PCs to businesses rose 11%.

The company’s earnings compare unfavorably with Apple’s Q3 earnings, which were also announced this week. Apple’s quarterly revenues hit a record $28.57 billion and earnings were another record at $7.31 billion. Apple sold 9.25 million iPads during the quarter, an increase of 183% compared to the same period in 2010. Mac sales also jumped 14%.
Meanwhile, Apple and Microsoft aren’t the only ones recording record quarters — Intel and Google also broke records this month.
