Could this summer stage the worst Ashes ever?

The standard of English and Australian cricket has come under major scrutiny this week after both international Test sides proved far from convincing in respective touring series.

While England stare down the were nearly going down to an embarrassing 1-0 series defeat to New Zealand thanks to life saving century by Matt Prior, Australia suffered a humiliating whitewash at the hands of India to lose 4-0 for the first time since South Africa in 1970.

The two series results mean neither side carries much form heading into the English summer, where fans in the Ashes cricket betting world are eagerly anticipating another round of Ashes action.

Unfortunately for Australia, their loss in India is probably more concerning than England’s poor display in New Zealand. Team and coaching issues, poor performances and an inability to handle a turning subcontinent wicket have blighted the Baggy Greens’ tour.

Vice-captain Shane Watson was dropped then reinstated, while Michael Clarke’s back injury is a major concern as his absence in the fourth Test proves just how fragile their top order really is.

A series whitewash is never a good thing but against India – who lost to England 2-1 on home soil last winter – it is a disaster for Australia as we draw closer to the Ashes.

England, meanwhile, have shown their weakness when captain Alastair Cook slumps in form and Kevin Pietersen’s injury exposes the same fragility in the order that Australia are struggling to rectify.

With their bowlers performing below par without the injured Graeme Swann, England and Australia are gearing up for what could be one of the worst Ashes series in living memory.

Not that this will take away from the drama – betting on England to win will see to that – but fans can expect little consistency to settle in over the five-match series.

Asian Hockey Champions Trophy: Spirited Pakistan beat India 5-4 to clinch title

Sub-standard umpiring by Korean Shin Yun Dong mars a high voltage final

CHAMPIONS: Pakistan players celebrate after winning the Asian Champions Trophy at the Rayyan Stadium yesterday.

Pakistan showed tremendous fighting spirit after losing their key player Shakeel Abbasi early on due to an ankle injury to beat India 5-4 in an electrifying encounter to clinch the Asian Champions Trophy here at the Al Rayyan Stadium yesterday. At half time India led 2-1.

Pakistan, thus, avenged their 4-2 shootout defeat against India in the last edition of this tournament. However, the match was overshadowed with some substandard umpiring and has once raised the big question of having umpires who don’t have the nerve to handle such high intensity matches.

Korean umpire Shin Yun Dong reversed a stroke in the dying minutes, buckling under the pressure of the Pakistan team and a high drama followed after that. Pakistan was leading 5-4 at that stage and a goal then
would have certainly forced the match into extra-time. The decision being revised in the absence of a video referral was a complete surprise. Then it was the turn of the Indian team to protest and when Dong stood his ground, the team left the field in protest.

A good five minutes was lost, before the Indian team hesitantly made it to the field to play out the remaining two minutes on the request of their coach Michael Nobbs.

What was more disappointing was to see Dong argue with a section of Indian supporters who were protesting at his change of mind. “He (Dong) was asking us to come and officiate. ‘Why don’t you people officiate’ he told us. He was a clueless rattled man out there,” said an angry Indian fan.

However, nothing can be taken away from the way Pakistan played. Just five minutes into play and Pakistan’s star player Abbasi limped out of the field after twisting his ankle. Taking the onus on his shoulders was Mohammed Waqas, who was simply outstanding and walked away with the man of the match and top scorer of the tournament award later.

Pakistan struck off the fi rst penalty corner that came their way in the 7th minute; Waqas, finding the back of the net with a clinical deflection. However, even before the celebration could end in the Pakistan camp, India struck back through a brilliantly crafted move by Birendra Lakra, who found SV Sunil lurking inside the D. The latter blasting the goal with a neat grounder.

India went on to widen the lead to 2-1 through their first penalty corner in the 21st minute. VR Raghunath went for the goal straight from the middle and saw his shot breach Pakistan custodian Imran Butt.
The match swung like a pendulum from one end to other in the second session. Trailing by a goal, Pakistan went all out and stuck two goals in quick succession to pile the pressure back on the Indian team. This happening after Butt had kept out a power-packed hit from Raghunath, from the second penalty corner that India managed.

Shafqat Rasool was the first to score. He despite having his back facing the Indian goal unleashed a powerful hit between his legs to breach the outstretched hands of Indian custodian P Sreejesh, who was a shadow of his self yesterday.

Then Rashid Mehmood put Pakistan in the lead with a neat connection of a penalty corner, the ball sounding the board going straight through the legs of Sreejesh. India then struck in the 55th minute through a brilliant defl ection by Gurwinder Singh Chandi off a measured through by Raghunath and it was 3-3. More excitement fi lled the air with Pakistan once again taking a 4-3 lead through Waqas, his second one for the match.

Rupinder Pal put India back in the match by scoring off a penalty corner in the 59th minute. With the scoreboard reading 4-4, India managed another penalty corner but Butt struck his hand up to thwart the attempt from Pal. Pakistan, however, made sure not miss out the penalty corner that came their way in the 64th minute and led 5-4 after Mohammed Ateeq sounded the board. And had umpire Dong stuck to his stroke decision, the match would have probably gone into another thrilling extra-time.

That last minute decision was atrocious and he completely spoiled the match. That goal would have completely changed the course of play. It was dying minutes and the umpire changed his mind, which was completely not acceptable. He went to ask the third umpire who was 30 metres away from that place and changed his decision, fumed India captain Sardar Singh.

Indian coach Michael Nobbs also rated the umpiring as poor.

“Throughout the tournament, the umpiring was of low standards and we had to bear the brunt in the end.”

Heartbroken: Indian players after losing the final against Pakistan in the 2nd Asian Hockey Champions Trophy

Pakistan skipper Mohammed Imran hailed the team’s victory saying,

“The team played like a unit after we lost Abbasi early. Everyone wanted to prove a point and it was a complete team eff ort. Such intense matches will do a world of good to India and Pakistan hockey.”

Speaking about the umpiring decision towards the end, Imran said,

“These things do happen in matches. It’s a part of the game that’s all I want to say. Sometime decisions come your way and sometimes it goes the other way round.”

Earlier, Malaysia, who defeated India 5-3 in their last league match, managed a well deserved third place by rallying from a goal down to beat China 3-1. The star player Ahmad Tengku Jalil Abdul bagged the player of the tournament for his outstanding performance in the tournament.

Also Oman, after struggling all through the tournament, came up with an inspired performance in the fi fth and sixth place match to beat Japan 3-1.

Finally Alex Ferguson has been able to secure Arsenal's prized Dutch Robin Van Persie (RVP) in the kitty of Manchester United. Arsenal Football Club has also confirmed they have agreed with the transfer to Manchester United. The tranasfer fee has been totalled to be around £24,000,000.

The motor sport history of Mercedes-Benz is a story of success. No matter whether you look at the 19th, 20th or 21st century, racing cars from Stuttgart have always been, and continue to be, in the top league in sporting competition. Countless racing victories - from the world's first car race in 1894 to Mika Hakkinen's Formula 1 World Championship titles in 1998 and 1999 with McLaren Mercedes - testify to perfect race car engineering, the drivers' unflagging determination to win and the development of efficient team work. More than 100 years of motor sport under the three-pointed star reflects the origins of motor racing as well as the breathtaking speed at which the engineering of the successful Mercedes-Benz racing cars developed.

The motor vehicle conquers the world

The motor vehicle had originally been conceived by its inventors - Daimler, Maybach and Benz - as a means of transport, not as a sports machine. But it wasn't long until courageous men came up with the idea of competing against each other in the first motorised vehicles. The world's first car race in 1894 marked the beginning not only of motor sport, but also of automotive engineering development at a breathtaking speed. The motor manufacturers realised the publicity effect of successes in motor racing at an early stage and began using it to promote the sales of their road-going vehicles.

Daimler engines: Driving power in the world's first motor race

In a first official effort of pitting themselves against each other - the international race from Paris to Rouen - the cars finishing in the first four places were powered by Panhard-Levassor engines built to the Daimler principle. These V2 units developed 3.5 hp and permitted the cars to cover the 125 kilometre route at an average speed of 20.5 km/h. In the following years, vehicles with Daimler engines continued in this vein, clinching numerous victories and thereby consolidating the good reputation of top-class engineering from Germany.

Gottlieb Daimler's business friend Emil Jellinek and the first 'Genuine' Mercedes

The turn of the century marked the beginning of dynamic development, away from the previous carriage-type vehicle and towards the auto-mobile as we know it today. The sensational breakthrough was achieved at a surprisingly early stage, in 1901: Wilhelm Maybach built a pioneering car for the Nice race week, powered by a 5.9 litre four-cylinder engine installed at the front, developing a remarkable 35 hp and providing the car with a top speed of 100 km/h. It is attributable to Emil Jellinek that this modern car is regarded as the first 'Mercedes'. A business friend of Gottlieb Daimler who had died in March 1900, and something like a 'major customer' of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) even in those early days, Jellinek insisted that the car be named 'Daimler-Mercedes' - Mercedes was the name of his favourite daughter.

The first Mercedes scored victory straight away in the Nice - Aix - Salon - Nice race. Company driver Wilhelm Werner covered the 392 kilometre route at an average speed of 58.1 km/h. The pioneering design of the front-engined Mercedes marked the consistent departure from the carriage principle, thereby influencing the motor manufacturers throughout the world in the design of future motor vehicles of all kinds.

Gordon Bennett race: First major international triumph for Mercedes

As early as 1903, the unrelenting search for ever better auto-mobiles led to a 90/60 hp Mercedes car at whose wheel the Belgian Camille Jenatzy - one of the first professional racing drivers in history - clinched a major international success for the Cannstatt-based company.

Great Moments in the French Grand Prix races in 1908 and 1914

Other highlights before World War I were the successes of Daimler and Benz in the French Grand Prix - an event in which 'la Grande Nation' in 1908 had actually wanted to prove that the fastest racing cars were French - but the laurels all went to Germany. A first and a fifth place for the 140 hp Mercedes cars, and second and third ranks for the racing cars of Benz & Cie. in Mannheim impressively proved the superior qualities of the German brands. Innumerable victories and respectable placings in road and hill-climb races followed in the years before the outbreak of World War II; worth emphasising is the repeat triumph in the 1914 French Grand Prix. On a race track near Lyon, Christian Lautenschlager, Louis Wagner and Otto Salzer scored an uncontested one-two-three victory in cars called 'Mercedes 115 hp 4.5 litre Grand Prix'. It took the victorious Mercedes drivers a little over seven hours to complete the 752.6 kilometre race - at an average speed of no less than 105 km/h.

The legendary Blitzen-Benz: 200 hp from more than 21 litres

The fever to attain ever higher speeds had infected everyone. A worldwide stir was caused by one of the most fascinating cars of this era, the Blitzen-Benz ('Lightning Benz') of 1910. Its design was based in the successful Benz Grand Prix cars of 1908. Engineers Victor Hemery, Hans Nibel and their colleagues created an imposing auto-mobile which was to remain the fastest car in the world for a long time to come with its mighty four-cylinder engine. A power output of a hefty 200 hp generated exciting performance. The most impressive proof was provided in 1911 when the American Bob Burman established a speed record of 228.1 km/h over a mile with a flying start in Daytona - a record that remain unbroken until 1919.

At the time, record runs were staged on sand tracks without exception, commanding due respect for the truly daredevil drivers, given the fact that the cars had comparatively poor ride characteristics and no windscreens. The impressive Blitzen-Benz also reveals the first aerodynamic influences on vehicle design.

World's fastest man , the Jamaican Usain Bolt has won an other Gold Medal in the 200m category in the London Olympics with an outstanding time of 19.32 s .
Behind him were his fellow Jamaicans who finished second and third to attain the Silver and the Bronze for Jamaica. Yohan Blake who was a serious contendor finished with 19.44 s,and the bronze medalist Warren Weir with 19.84.

The American Wallace Spearmon, who also was in the serious contention for a Bronze finished at 19.90s just fractions behind Warren Weir.
Bolt is the first man to win the 100m and 200m gold medals at consecutive Olympic games. Approaching London, he said only this feat would truly allow him to become a legend. He need not muse over his status any longer.

Pakistan Hockey team will face Argentina in their second pool A match of the London Olympics 2012 scheduled for 18:00 GMT at Riverbank Arena.

Pakistan played their opening match against Spain in the Olympic tournament which ended in a 1-1 Draw. This will be a key match for Pakistan if they want to remain on course in competition. Pakistan and Argentina last played during Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament in which Pakistan won by 4 - 2 in May this year. Asif Bajwa, the Pakistan Hockey Federation(PHF) secretary, during an interview to a local news agency said,

"that the national team has enough firepower to beat Argentina again. “The boys are playing well and I’m sure that they will do even better in the second game tomorrow,” he said. “It’s a must-win match for us because three points from it would raise our hopes for a place in the last-four "

Olympics 2012 : Djokovic vs Roddick Free Live Streaming

In a second round match of tennis in the London Olympics 2012 Serbian Novak Djokovic and American Andy Roddick will face each other for their third round berth.

World No 2 Djokovic had a tough three set match in the first round against Fabio, while Roddick sailed rather easily in the All England tennis club. Djokovic lost his doubles fixture yesterday, and during his Facebook message said:

"Long day today. Unfortunately, Viktor and I lost our match. We played our best, but the guys were just better than us. The good thing is that Janko and Ziki won, so we are still in the race for the medal in the doubles. Both Ana and Janko won their singles matches, and tomorrow is my turn to defend the national colors :) I play 3rd match on Centre court, and luckily for me this time there will be no rain delays. Wish me luck!"

Let's see who guns down whom, seemingly Roddick has not been able to flash to the highest level in recent times, but he did win few small tournaments before coming to Olympics.

The match will start at 1600 GMT live from the Centre Court .
