The Vanagon Kitchen — 37 Years of Westfalia Camping

The original VW Westfalia kitchen. Still looking remarkably good after 37 years.

When you own the same VW T3 California since 1989, some things become more than just equipment.

The little Westfalia kitchen has been part of countless trips, weekends and camping nights. It has cooked meals in the mountains, at the coast, at festivals and at campsites all over Europe.

And after nearly four decades, it is still the original kitchen.

The original propane setup

Originally, the kitchen was designed to run from the built-in propane system. We used that setup for many years.

But there was one problem with keeping the original propane installation:

the mandatory 10-year inspection of the gas tank.

At some point we decided not to have the old propane tank refurbished/re-certified. Instead, we removed the propane installation and converted the cooker to EN417 gas cartridges.

A simple modern solution

For the conversion, we use an EN417-compatible cartridge system with a CADAC pressure regulator.

This means we can still use the original Westfalia kitchen while using a modern, readily available gas supply.

It is one of those modifications that doesn't change the character of the van at all.

The kitchen still looks like it did decades ago.

It just works a little differently.

And yes — we still use it

That's probably the most important part.

This isn't a restored showpiece that has spent the last 20 years sitting in a garage.

The California has been used.

A lot.

37 years. 799 nights. And the original Westfalia kitchen is still part of the story.

What we use

For our current setup, we use the CADAC regulator together with EN417 gas cartridges.

1 — The Beginning

What started the Lidlification of our travels?

Back in 2017, at Rock am Ring.

That was when I really started to appreciate the Lidl Rock Store. The atmosphere, the concept, the selection, the service — somehow Lidl managed to create something that felt like much more than just a supermarket at a festival.

So, congratulations to Lidl’s marketing team. Seriously. 👏

The Rock Store became one of those little highlights we looked forward to whenever we went to Rock am Ring.

At that point, I obviously had no idea that Lidl would eventually become a surprisingly regular part of our travels — far beyond Germany and far beyond music festivals.

And that’s where the story gets interesting…

2 — Somewhere on the Road

The Lidlification of our travels continued…

What started with the Rock Store at Rock am Ring slowly found its way into our travels.

Whenever we were somewhere in Europe, there was a surprisingly good chance that we would eventually end up looking for a Lidl.

Not because we had to.

Obviously. 😉

But there were two very important reasons:

Pretzels. And bread.

Especially the Pan campeón del mundo — the “World Champion Bread”. 🇪🇸

Somehow, finding a Lidl in Spain became part of the travel routine.

Park the camper.

Walk into Lidl.

Check the bake shop.

Pretzels secured.

World Champion Bread secured.

Continue the journey.

And over the years, Lidl became one of those familiar little things that somehow make travelling feel a bit like home — even when you’re hundreds or thousands of kilometres away.

At this point, I should probably have realized where this was heading…

3 — The Parkside Era

And then the Lidlification went one step further.

At some point, Lidl didn’t just become part of our travels anymore.

It started making its way into the toolbox.

This Parkside cordless angle grinder now lives in our Fuso Exmo — a vehicle built to take us pretty much anywhere we want to go.

And yes, I know what you’re thinking:

A Parkside angle grinder… on a world trip?

Well… if Arnold Schwarzenegger is willing to take a Parkside tool on his adventures instead of one of those other brands, who am I to argue? 😎

And just to make things slightly more confusing:

There’s a Makita toolbox right underneath it.

So no, I haven’t completely lost my mind.

I’m just… diversifying. 😉

From a Rock am Ring supermarket to pretzels in Spain to power tools in an expedition truck.

I guess this is what you call Lidlification.

And that’s probably where this story ends.

Vier Wochen Festival-Roadtrip mit dem Fuso

Von Wacken über die Elbe bis in die Alpen – und zurück

Vier Wochen unterwegs mit dem Fuso. Kein exakt durchgeplanter Reiseablauf, kein festes Ziel für jeden einzelnen Tag – sondern eine grobe Richtung, ein paar Ideen und die Freiheit, einfach dort zu bleiben, wo es gerade schön ist.

Und irgendwie wurde daraus ein Festival-Roadtrip der etwas anderen Art.

Denn wenn man die Reise im Nachhinein betrachtet, könnte man fast meinen, wir hätten eine kleine Sucht entwickelt: Parkplatz-Camping. 😄

6 Nächte auf Festivalplätzen, 15 Nächte auf Parkplätzen und 9 Nächte auf klassischen Wohnmobilstellplätzen.

Und genau diese Mischung hat die Reise so besonders gemacht.

Der Start: Wacken 🤘

Der Auftakt hätte kaum besser sein können: Wacken Open Air.

Sechs Nächte stand der Fuso mitten im Festivalgeschehen. Große Bühnen, Metal, Menschen aus aller Welt und diese ganz besondere Atmosphäre, die man wohl nur in Wacken erlebt.

Musikalisch waren für uns unter anderem Electric Bassboy, Bleed From Within und Anett & Livi Acoustic feat. Rado Eden besondere Highlights. Dazu P.O.D., Arch Enemy und natürlich einige Überraschungen – allen voran Judas Priest und Sabaton.

Der Fuso war dabei nicht nur unser Fahrzeug, sondern für sechs Tage unser Zuhause mitten auf dem Festivalgelände.

Nach den großen Bühnen von Wacken konnte der Kontrast kaum größer sein.

Von Metal zu Schiffen: die Elbe ⚓

Nach Wacken ging es Richtung Elbe nach Twielenfleth.

Und dort fanden wir tatsächlich einen Platz in der ersten Reihe – direkt am Wasser.

Fünf Tage lang wurde aus dem Festivalgelände ein persönlicher Fish & Ships Festivalplatz. 😄

Schiffe beobachten, Fahrrad fahren, am Wasser sitzen, fotografieren und einfach schauen, was auf der Elbe vorbeikommt.

Und davon gab es einiges.

Kreuzfahrtschiffe, Containerschiffe und jede Menge andere Schiffe zogen an uns vorbei. Die Costa Favolosa und die Liberty of the Seas gehörten dabei zu den besonderen Highlights.

Einmal saß man am Fuso und beobachtete ein riesiges Kreuzfahrtschiff auf der Elbe – am nächsten Tag ging es mit dem Fahrrad durch die Landschaft.

Und irgendwann entstand dabei eine neue Idee: unser eigenes „Ships of the Elbe – Top Trumps“. Jedes interessante Schiff bekommt seine eigene Quartettkarte mit Foto und technischen Daten.

Natürlich musste auch der Fuso mit aufs Bild. 🚐🚢

Richtung Süden

Nach fünf Tagen zwischen Schiffen, Fischbrötchen und Elbe ging es weiter Richtung Süden.

Langendorf, Weißenhorn und schließlich Lechbruck am See.

Unterwegs gehörten natürlich auch ein paar ordentliche Wirtshaus-Stopps dazu. Bei den sommerlichen Temperaturen waren kalte Getränke und gutes Essen mindestens genauso wichtig wie die nächste Sehenswürdigkeit. 😉

In Lechbruck wurde es dann endgültig alpin.

Der Blick auf die Berge, der See vor der Tür und der Fuso als Basislager – genau die Art von Reisen, für die wir uns dieses Fahrzeug angeschafft haben.

Piz Schöneben – das nächste Festival 🏔️🚵‍♂️

Irgendwann zog es uns noch weiter nach Süden.

Unser nächstes Ziel: Piz Schöneben am Reschenpass, auf etwa 1.500 Metern Höhe.

Und wieder landeten wir auf einem Parkplatz.

Diesmal allerdings mit einem völlig anderen Festivalgefühl.

Sechs Nächte blieben wir dort und erlebten ein kleines Bike & Hike Festival mit Downhill-Bikern, Trails, Bergen und jeder Menge Bewegung.

Nach der Hitze der vergangenen Wochen waren die rund fünf Grad niedrigeren Temperaturen auf 1.500 Metern eine echte Wohltat.

Und nach dem Zuschauen bei den Downhillern gab es das perfekte Gegenprogramm: ein erfrischendes Bad im See.

Berge, Wasser, Fahrräder, Sonne und der Fuso mittendrin.

Mehr Roadtrip geht eigentlich kaum.

Und dann wurde sogar Shopping zum Festival 😄

Nach sechs Tagen Piz Schöneben ging es wieder zurück nach Deutschland.

Lechbruck, anschließend Sulzemoos.

Der Besuch bei Der Freistaat war dabei eine Art kleines Wohnmobil-Festival. Jede Menge Reisemobile anschauen, Inspiration sammeln und natürlich die Frage stellen, was es eigentlich noch alles gibt, das man in einen Fuso einbauen könnte. 😉

Danach führte ein Abstecher ins Ingolstadt Village.

Damit hatten wir nun wirklich alle möglichen Festivalvarianten abgedeckt:

Metal Festival.
Fish & Ships Festival.
Bike & Hike Festival.
RV Shopping Festival.
Shopping Festival.

Man muss nur kreativ genug sein. 😂

Das Finale: kleine Bühnen statt großer Bühnen 🎸

Zum Abschluss ging es nach Gunzenhausen und an den Altmühlsee.

Und auch musikalisch schloss sich damit irgendwie der Kreis.

Nach den riesigen Bühnen in Wacken endete unsere Reise bei den kleinen Bühnen des Altmühltalfestivals.

Weniger Menschen. Kleinere Bühnen. Eine völlig andere Atmosphäre.

Aber genau deshalb ein perfekter Abschluss.

Denn eigentlich war das auch das Motto der gesamten Reise:

Von den großen Bühnen zu den kleinen Bühnen.
Von der Nordsee zu den Alpen.
Von Schiffen zu Bergen.
Von Festivalplätzen zu Parkplätzen.

30 Nächte – und kein einziger wirklich fester Plan

Wenn ich die vier Wochen zusammenfasse, bleibt vor allem eines hängen:

Wir hatten keinen festen Reiseplan – und genau das war der Plan.

Wir sind losgefahren und haben unterwegs entschieden, wo es als Nächstes hingeht.

Das Wetter bestimmte teilweise die Richtung. Ein schöner Stellplatz führte zum nächsten. Ein interessantes Ziel wurde zum Abstecher. Und manchmal war einfach der Parkplatz selbst das Ziel.

Am Ende standen:

6 Nächte Festival Grounds
15 Nächte Parking Lots
9 Nächte RV Parks

Dazu unzählige Kilometer, Schiffe, Berge, Seen, Fahrräder, Wirtshäuser, Festivals, gute Gespräche und jede Menge neue Eindrücke.

Und natürlich 27 Bilder, die nur einen kleinen Teil dieser vier Wochen erzählen können.

Der Fuso hat dabei genau das gemacht, wofür wir ihn gebaut haben: Er war unser Zuhause, unser Ausgangspunkt und unser Ticket für maximale Freiheit.

Vier Wochen unterwegs – vom Holy Ground in Wacken bis zu den kleinen Bühnen am Altmühlsee.

6 Days at Graspop Metal Meeting 2026 – Surviving the Heat in Metal Town

After months of anticipation, we finally pointed the Fuso 4x4 camper towards Belgium for five unforgettable days at the legendary Graspop Metal Meeting 2026 in Dessel.

This year marked the festival's 29th anniversary, and with more than 130 bands spread across four days, it felt like the entire metal world had gathered on one giant field.

Metal Town Life

Instead of camping in a tent, we stayed in Metal Town with the Fuso. Having our own expedition camper turned out to be the perfect choice because the weather was absolutely brutal. Day after day, the sun was relentless, turning the festival grounds into a dusty metal desert.

Cold drinks, a fridge, shade and a real bed suddenly felt like luxury items. Between bands, returning to the camper for a quick recharge made all the difference.

Metal Town itself had a fantastic atmosphere. Everywhere you looked there were campers, flags, metal shirts and people from all over Europe sharing beers, stories and recommendations for the next must-see show.

Festival Highlights

Choosing highlights at Graspop is never easy, but a few bands stood out.

The Offspring

The perfect festival band. Huge singalongs, endless energy and thousands of voices shouting every word back at the stage. One of those sets where everyone around you instantly becomes your best friend.

Limp Bizkit

Pure nostalgia mixed with chaos. As soon as Fred Durst appeared, the crowd exploded. Massive pits, endless jumping and enough energy to power the entire festival. Limp Bizkit remains one of the most talked-about performances of the weekend among fans.

Hollywood Undead

A personal surprise highlight. Their mix of rap, rock and metal worked perfectly on a hot festival afternoon and delivered one of the most entertaining sets of the weekend.

BABYMETAL

If you've never seen BABYMETAL live, it's difficult to explain. Precision, choreography, incredible musicianship and a crowd that ranged from die-hard fans to curious first-timers. An unforgettable show. Many festivalgoers praised their performance as one of the weekend's standouts.

Bonus Highlights

Feuerschwanz

The Germans absolutely owned the stage. Fun, catchy and impossible not to enjoy. The crowd participation was enormous and the atmosphere felt more like a giant party than a concert.

Electric Callboy

Perhaps the wildest crowd of the weekend. Circle pits, dancing, jumping and complete madness from start to finish. Exactly what a festival show should be.

The Biggest Surprises

Knocked Loose

We went in curious and left completely blown away. The intensity, the aggression and the crowd reaction were on another level. One of those performances that instantly creates new fans. Many attendees mentioned them among the strongest sets of the festival.

Architects

Massive sound, incredible stage presence and a crowd that never stopped moving. Architects delivered one of the most powerful performances we witnessed all weekend.

The Graspop Experience

What makes Graspop special isn't just the bands. It's the people.

Whether standing in line for food, relaxing in Metal Town or sharing a table with complete strangers, conversations started instantly. Everyone was there for the same reason: great music, good times and a few days away from everyday life.

The combination of scorching temperatures, dusty festival grounds, endless walking and late nights left us completely exhausted. But somehow that's exactly what makes Graspop so memorable.

Until Next Time

Five days. Hundreds of kilometers driven. Countless bands. Too much heat. Not enough sleep.

And yet, as we rolled the Fuso out of Metal Town and headed home, we were already talking about coming back.

Because that's the thing about Graspop Metal Meeting:

You arrive tired.
You leave exhausted.
And you immediately start planning the next one.

Same box. Same mission. Completely different chaos.

16× Fuso 4x4 and 8× Iveco Daily rolled into the Rhön for a private “Auto Wilde Expeditionsmobil” meet — and somehow every single one looks like it was built on a different planet.

Same silhouette, different soul: one is a tiny apartment, one a workshop, one a rolling toolbox… and one definitely just there for snacks and questionable route planning.

Days spent walking from rig to rig, swapping stories, ideas, and “you really did THAT?” moments. Nice talks, good laughs, and that shared feeling that everyone is slightly overcomplicating travel in the best possible way.

And then the best part: coming together for dinner like a moving village. One evening at the local Biergarten, the next around a smoky BBQ under the Rhön sky — engines cold, stories still running.

No showroom polish, no copy-paste builds — just 24 ideas of parked in one meadow.

For overlanders, it’s a bucket-list destination. But tackling it in a Fuso 4x4 camper elevates the entire experience from a simple road trip to an unforgettable expedition.

Overnight Stays: Wild camping and overnight parking are strictly forbidden inside the park boundaries. Plan to head to nearby designated camper areas in Arguedas or local eco-campsites before sunset.

Abenteuer im Februar mit dem #Fuso4x4Camper

Entlang der #DeutschenAlpenstraße und der #RomantischenStraße.

Wohnmobil-Schaufensterbummel in Sulzemoos bei der ersten Übernachtung. Weiter ging es mit dem Fuso zum Sylvenstein-Stausee. Das türkisfarbene Wasser vor der Kulisse der schneebedeckten Gipfel – einfach perfekt! 👌

Ein Abstecher nach Bad Tölz, um bayerische Kultur zu genießen. Die Deutsche Alpenstraße ist im Februar einfach magisch – weniger Trubel, mehr Atmosphäre. Nur wir, die Straße und die schroffen Gipfel. Ein kurzer Stopp in Steingaden, bevor es nach Lechbruck ging.

Wir tauschten den Fahrersitz gegen den Wanderweg und genossen die malerische Aussicht auf die schneebedeckten Alpen.

Zwischenbericht: 4 Monate & 6.300 km im „Auto-Wilde Fuso Truck Camper“

Nach 4 Monaten und den ersten 6.300 km möchte ich ein Zwischenfazit zu unserem Fuso-Aufbau von Auto-Wilde ziehen. Vorab: Wir sind durchaus zufrieden. Uns war beim Kauf klar, dass man für diesen Preis im Segment der Allrad-LKW kein komplett durchentwickeltes High-End-Expeditionsmobil bekommt. Wenn man mit dieser realistischen Erwartung herangeht, erhält man ein sehr faires Paket.

1. Das Basisfahrzeug: LKW-Charme und Kinderkrankheiten

Der Fuso ist ein Arbeitstier. Das Fahrverhalten ist rustikal – die Federungseigenschaften, naja. Bei der Ergonomie der Bedienelemente fühlt man sich Jahrzehnte zurückversetzt. Das war uns aber vorher natürlich bewusst. Dass diese Eigenschaften sogar hinter unserem 36 Jahre alten VW T3 California zurück liegen, hat uns dann ehrlicherweise doch etwas überrascht.

Getriebe-Thematik: Wir haben leider Pech mit Getriebeölverlust. Bisher wurde der Fehler zweimal auf Garantie bei Daimler Truck behoben. Da das Problem nun zum dritten Mal ansteht, möchte ich die Reparatur erst nach einer ordentlichen, tiefgreifenden Diagnose durchführen lassen – nur die Symptome zu bekämpfen, reicht hier nicht mehr aus. Dies wurde Auto-Wilde in Auftrag gegeben.

Wir bleiben bei der Zwillingsbereifung und verzichten auf Höherlegung. Gründe sind die ADAC-Höhenlimits, der Verzicht auf echtes Offroad und das Vermeiden von Garantie-Hürden bei unserem geplanten Übersee-Einsatz.

2. Der Aufbau: Solide Basis mit Lerneffekt

Der Möbelbau ist solide und die Komponenten sind vernünftige Standard-Hardware.

Als langjährige Camper wissen wir, wie man richtig lüftet und mit Kondenswasser umgeht. Dennoch gab es hier Optimierungsbedarf:

Schlafkomfort & Unterlüftung: Die ab Werk verbaute Mesh-Matte unter den Matratzen erwies sich als völlig untauglich. Obwohl wir eigentlich keine Fans von Tellerfedern sind, haben wir hier ein Froli-System nachgerüstet, um das Problem Unterlüftung in den Griff zu bekommen.

Heizleistung: Interessanterweise stattet Auto-Wilde Neufahrzeuge (nur drei Monate nach unserer Auslieferung) nun mit einer zweiten Heizung aus, um die schwache Heizleistung im Heck zu korrigieren. Das hinterlässt einen faden Beigeschmack – man fühlt sich hier unfreiwillig als Beta-Testerfür ein Produkt, das scheinbar erst beim Kunden reift.

Querbett mit Mitteleinstieg ist für den Langzeitgebrauch ein ergonomisches No-Go. Das Design des Kabinen Grundrisses ist produktionstechnisch günstig, aber im Alltag auf die Dauer in diesem Punkt unpraktisch.

3. Wartung: Die Sache mit der Durchgangsschleuse

Ein Punkt, der im Alltag nervt: Ich kontrolliere gern regelmäßig das Öl. Das Kippen des Fahrerhauses ist kein Thema, aber die Demontage und Montage der Durchgangsschleuse zur Kabine ist eine Zumutung und auf Grund einer fehlenden Wartungsklappe beim Fuso Basisfahrzeug von Auto-Wilde schlicht nicht zu Ende gedacht. Hier merkt man dann eben doch den Preisunterschied.

4. Service & Kommunikation bei Auto-Wilde

Der Kaufprozess war erfrischend einfach und unkompliziert. Auch technische Hilfe per Online-Anleitung hat bei einem Elektro-Problem gut funktioniert. Die laufende Kommunikation ist allerdings extrem schleppend. Mails werden oft erst nach der zweiten Nachfrage zur Kenntnis genommen. Man fragt sich wirklich, ob dort im Norden noch eher Fax oder Briefpost als primäres Kommunikationsmittel genutzt werden.

Mein persönliches Fazit

Trotz der Kritikpunkte: Der Auto-Wilde Fuso ist ein robustes und ehrliches Fahrzeug. Er wird uns vermutlich nicht so lange begleiten wie ursprünglich gedacht, aber für das aktuelle Preis-Leistungs-Segment ist er ein vernünftiger Begleiter, wenn man bereit ist, selbst Hand anzulegen.

Teil 2: Von der Werkstatt in die Wildnis – Freiheit, Staub und fette Yachten

Nach zehn Tagen unfreiwilliger Pause in Castellón hieß es endlich wieder: Schlüssel drehen, Gang rein und weg von Hebebühnen und Werkstattkaffee! Wir hatten Nachholbedarf in Sachen Abenteuer und haben den Fuso erst einmal wieder Richtung Süden gespürt.

Wild-West-Feeling in der Tabernas-Wüste

Unser erster echter Befreiungsschlag: Die Wüste von Tabernas. Hier konnte der Fuso 4x4 endlich wieder zeigen, wofür er gebaut wurde. Zwischen staubigen Canyons und vertrockneten Flussbetten fühlten wir uns wie in einem alten Western-Movie. Kein Asphalt, keine Werkstattwände – nur wir, der Sand und die endlose Weite der einzigen Wüste Europas. Ein Härtetest für Mensch und Maschine, den wir in vollen Zügen genossen haben.

Küstenglück: Mojácar und Beach Palermos

Vom Staub direkt ans Salz: In Mojácar haben wir die weißen Gassen und das mediterrane Flair genossen, bevor es an den Beach Palermos (Atomic Beach) ging. Wer Einsamkeit sucht, wird hier fündig. Der Sound der Brandung, der raue Charme der Küste und das Gefühl, autark direkt am Meer zu stehen – das war genau die Medizin, die wir nach dem Castellón-Stress gebraucht haben.

Der Schwenk nach Norden: Polop & Monte Ponoig

Dann begann der Weg zurück. Ein Stopp im Hinterland am Monte Ponoig war Pflicht. Der „Schlafende Löwe“ bot uns die perfekte Bergkulisse. Wir haben die Wanderstiefel geschnürt und sind durch die schroffen Kalksteinfelsen gestiegen. In Polop haben wir unsere Vorräte an der berühmten Plaza de los Chorros mit frischem Quellwasser aufgefüllt – 221 Quellen purer Energie!

Kontrastprogramm in Dénia: Staub trifft auf Glamour

An der Küste in Dénia bot sich auf dem Stellplatz El Raset ein Bild für Götter: Unser staubiger, ehrlicher Expeditions-LKW direkt neben den polierten Mega-Yachten der High Society. Nach einer Weltklasse-Pizza im „Al Forn“ (unbedingte Empfehlung!) hat uns ein heftiger Sturm in der Nacht noch einmal ordentlich durchgeschüttelt. Kostenloses Fuso-Schaukeln inklusive!

Der Endspurt: Kaltfront und 1.000 Kilometer

Über Cervera del Mestrat – unserem letzten ruhigen Rückzugsort – kündigte sich der Norden an. Bei gefühlten 3 Grad und Regen wurde uns klar: Der Sommer ist vorbei. Die Heimreise war ein echter Marathon. Über 1.000 Kilometer in zwei Tagen, mit dem ständigen Blick unter das Getriebe, bis wir schließlich über den Fallerhof wieder gesund zu Hause angekommen sind.

Fazit: Wir haben die Wüste bezwungen, einsame Strände gefunden und den Sturm überstanden. Der Fuso hat uns trotz seiner „Leckage“ treu nach Hause gebracht. Jetzt geht es an die Ursachenforschung, damit der nächste Trip von Anfang bis Ende staubtrocken bleibt!

Von Champagner zu Getriebeöl: Unsere Fuso 4x4 Reise-Achterbahn durch Europa

Man sagt, der Weg ist das Ziel. Aber niemand sagt dir, dass der Weg manchmal über eine Waschmaschine in Benicàssim und eine Tiefkühlpizza in Castellón führt. Hier ist die Geschichte unserer bisherigen Reise mit dem Fuso 4x4 – ein Trip zwischen High-Life und Werkstatt-Blues.

Der Start: Kurs Süd-Südwest

Mit dem Schlüssel eines nagelneuen 2023er Fuso Canter 4x4 in der Hand fühlt man sich unbesiegbar. 170 PS, Allrad, Starlink auf dem Dach – die Welt gehört uns. Der erste Stopp führte uns nach Beaune im Herzen des Burgunds. Eine Nacht französischer Flair, Stellplatz Tetris Extrem, der perfekte Auftakt für das große Abenteuer.

Katalonien & Silvester am Meer

Weiter ging es über die Grenze nach Spanien. In Empuriabrava (2 Nächte), der grössten Marina der Welt (?), genossen wir die Kanäle und das mediterrane Licht, bevor wir uns für das große Finale des Jahres am Playa Tropicana niederließen. Drei Nächte inklusive Silvester. Wir stießen auf das neue Jahr an, blickten auf das Meer und träumten von den Pisten, die wir mit unserem 4x4 bezwingen würden. Die Welt war in Ordnung.

Der Schock: Wenn die Träume tropfen

Doch die Realität meldete sich kurz nach Neujahr. Ein Blick unter den Fuso bei Castellón zerstörte die Urlaubs-Idylle: Ölverlust am Verteilergetriebe. Bei einem Fahrzeug mit gerade einmal ein paar tausend Kilometern auf der Uhr ein absoluter Albtraum. Diagnose der Vertragswerkstatt Autoprima: Wellendichtring defekt. "Teil kommt aus Deutschland", hieß es. Ein Satz, der uns für die nächsten zehn Tage zum Stillstand verdammte.

Die Mall-Chroniken: 110 Kilometer Asphalt

Was folgte, war die längste Woche unseres Lebens. Wir zogen auf den Stellplatz gegenüber der Shopping-Mall in Castellón um.

Cityhiking statt Offroad: Statt einsamer Pfade erkundeten wir die Mall-Umgebung. 110 Kilometer haben wir zu Fuß auf dem Asphalt abgerissen. Pendeln zwischen Werkstatt-Tresen, Lidl und dem "La Tagliatelle". Wir wurden zu Experten für spanische Einzelhandels-Logistik.
Starlink & China-Markt: Während wir auf ein mechanisches Bauteil warteten, hielt uns die Technik bei Laune. Wir beamten Daten per Starlink ins All und kauften Werkzeug im lokalen Bazar Chino.
Die 27mm-Erlösung: Die Wende kam durch Eigeninitiative. Mit einem 27er-Schlüssel bewaffnet, machten wir die "Fingerprobe" unter dem LKW. Erleichterung: Das Getriebe war nicht leer, es "schwitzte" nur massiv. Wir waren fahrbereit!

Der Ausbruch: Palmen statt Parkplätze

Nachdem wir den Fuso-Service in Deutschland offiziell eingeschaltet hatten (und diese tatsächlich sofort reagierten!), gab es kein Halten mehr. Wir haben die "Mall-Matrix" verlassen.

Jetzt sind wir auf dem Camping Tauro in Benicàssim. Der Kontrast könnte nicht krasser sein: Vom Lärm der Einflugschneisen und dem Asphalt der Mall direkt unter die Palmen. Während die erste Waschmaschine seit Tagen unsere "Staub-der-Straße"-Wäsche reinigt und wir gemütlich frühstücken, fühlt es sich endlich wieder wie Urlaub an.

Fazit der ersten Etappe: Wir haben in 10 Tagen mehr über unseren LKW, spanische Werkstätten und 27mm-Schrauben gelernt, als uns lieb war. Aber: Wir sind wieder mobil, die Zentrale in Deutschland ist am Ball und wir wissen jetzt: Ein Abenteuer ist erst dann ein Abenteuer, wenn etwas schiefgeht und man trotzdem wieder lacht.

Sonntags-Update: Der heutige Morgenmarsch hat die 120-Kilometer-Marke geknackt. 10 Kilometer pures Küsten-Glück entlang der Promenade von Benicàssim. Die Beine sind schwer, aber der Kopf ist endlich wieder frei. Der Fuso steht sicher auf dem Platz, die Wäsche ist trocken und wir genießen die Ruhe vor dem (hoffentlich finalen) Werkstatt-Montag.

Status: Fuso is leaking oil, and our patience is wearing thin. Location: Castellón (parking space asphalt instead of coastal dirt track). So far:

80 km hike (two-legged propulsion is working). 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

3 pizzerias, 1 burger (mall survival mode). 🍕

0 degrees Celsius this morning (Holy shore power!). ❄️⚡️

Spare part from Germany? "Mañana" is over today. 📦❓

Starlink is delivering, and hopefully the garage will be soon too.

No Victron, no Adblue, just camp with the vangon

Around 30 years ago.

No Wi-Fi. No Victron. No AdBlue.

Just a VW Vanagon, a tent, and sport equipment strapped wherever it fit.

No displays to check, no apps to open — only weather, mountains, and time.

A gas stove that runs forever, feeded from the huge (18l) tank underneath. A Eberspächer auxiliary heater that just runs after turning the switch, no display needed, just a little ⚡️ and diesel in the tank. You was used to think about that before and no ECU that patronizes you.

Evenings were quiet, mornings were cold, and everything we needed was already there.

Same mountains. Same grass.

A different pace — and a very good one. 🚐⛰️

It started harmless.
One small Travelbox 555, a portable solar panel, and the simple idea of collecting a bit of sunshine for life on the road in the #fatwesty. Just enough power to stay independent, right?

Then reality happened.

Next step: Anker Powerhouse 1229 Wh.
Because… electric cooking in the T3 Westy makes total sense. And obviously it had to double as a backup power source for the bigger campervans. You know — just in case. Completely reasonable.

But once you taste reliable off-grid power, there’s no turning back.

Honestly, there are so many towers here, I stopped counting after 7… my fingers were frozen anyway. 🥶

We arrived at -7°C, and the town greeted us like a medieval freezer with charm.
Snow on the rooftops, cobblestones crunching under the boots, and my Fuso looking like it just auditioned for Game of Thrones – Camper Edition. 🏰🐉

No crowds, no noise – just history, ice-cold air, and me whispering to my coffee: “Stay hot… please.”
