Here are some of the best comments by lecturers and professors I’ve come
accross, most of these quotes are from online blogs reading (archinet), some
are from words of mouth while others are first hand experience. Here goes:
* “Why are you here? Don’t come back next semester.”
* “Here’s a quarter. go call your mom and tell her you’re not going to be an
architect.”
* Your design is like masturbation, you want to know why? That is because only
you yourself enjoyed and like it.
* What is that boxy thing (model)? A coffin?
* Your design sucks!
* Your design is very tasteful… … for the tasteless.
* “Is this a … structural… glob of glue?”
* “When I went to school, at a different school than this one, there were
students who would present projects like this one.
And they would fail.”
* “Your project looks like something that’s been through a trash compactor”
* “This space that you’ve designed is the type place where beggars and dogs go
to die”
* “Are you in interior design?”
* “Why are you studying architecture if you’re producing things like that?”
* “Hey, everyone, gather round this project, come in close…because this is a
great example for everyone of exactly what NOT to do..”
* “This drawing isn’t worth the paper it is printed on.”
* “This (model) is great…..just don’t let your dog play with it next time.”
* “The program you invented was meant solely for your architectural
masturbation……”
* If you build this and after 10000 years the aliens see it, they would
understand why humans extinguish
* “Have you ever considered a career in accounting?”
* “oh, so it’s like some kind of orgy pit!”
* “So your parents are pay $20000 a year for this.”
* “Your theory is bullshit. You don’t need that”
* Prof pointing to part of a model, “Did you chew this?”
Based on Dale’s popular Subdivide & Smooth tools, Artisan is perfect for people who want to use SketchUp to model organic shapes and terrain features. Sompuras are designing and making temples from long time. In early days knowledge was passed verbally, But before few decades, many of sompuras tried to write the knowledge of temple making. Now a days few books{there are many from foreign writers, who have interpreted temple making as their understanding. here i am talking about books written by Sompuras) are available like Deeparnav, ShilpShastra, etc.
According to Skandha Puran, Sompuras were living on Moon (soma in sankrit). So they were called Sompura (residents of Moon). Detail mythological story can be found here. The word Som means moon and Pura means people who stay in a particular place. Thus, Sompura means people who stayed in the moon. When the original Somnath temple was to be constructed Vishvakarma, the divine architect, brought to earth a select few Sompuras from the moon to build the temple. Once the temple was constructed, the craftsmen requested Vishvakarma to send them back to the moon. However, Vishvakarma told them that they were to stay back and carry on with temple construction.

The Sompuras are a sub-group of the Brahmin community and are mostly to be found in the state of Gujarat where they are concentrated in and around the town of Prabhas Patan. The Sompuras’ main profession was and continues to be to build Temples and Derasars (Jain Temples) as per Vaastu Shilp Shastra, the ancient Indian Science of Architecture. They are very well known as Temple Architects worldwide. Their, other main profession was and remains panda giri (priestly services) in the temples, particularly in and around Somnath. The community is strictly vegetarian and avoids garlic and lentils.

some of readings about temples and shilp shastra:
Brazilian footwear company Melissa used the side of a building in São Paulo as a mega-huge movie screen for an animation that uses Post-its like analog pixels.

Twenty-five animators worked for a steady five months, stamping sherbet-colored notes on the U-shaped foyer of the Galeria Melissa to generate an ever-rotating cast of images -- from shadow boxes to a charming, psychedelic elephant -- captured on time-lapse video above. By project’s end, the animators had blown through a whopping 350,000 Post-Its.

The Post-it note -- that humble residue of 3M’s enviable 15% policy -- is nothing new in art and design. It has been used to make everything from wallpaper to mosaics of Elvis's mug. MoMA curator Paola Antonelli inducted Post-its into the design hall of fame several years ago, christening them, “Hypertext on a refrigerator door.”

post-it

What Melissa has done here is a stunt, to be sure. But a clever one. On top of the animation, the company got passers-by to jot down messages on 30,000 Post-its. That means some 30,000 people engaged with the brand. Not bad, as guerrilla marketing goes, for a little hypertext on the refrigerator door.
By James Cutler on May 3rd, 2011 in Tutorials - 16 Comments

PDF portfolios have become a standard process for showing your work. By using a PDF, various file types such as images, videos and documents can be embedded inside a single file ready for email. The latest versions of Adobe InDesign and Acrobat Professional, offer tools to create a PDF portfolio with the ability to add in interactivity. This can be button links, roll overs, website and email links. By combining the two software packages together you can create a fully navigational portfolio to showcase your work.
Designing the layout using Adobe InDesign

Within this particular design there will be a single page per item. The user can select a category and then browse through images of that category via navigation buttons, and return to the home screen at any time. I recommend using vector objects as much as possible for icons, buttons and logos, this way they can be resized without losing quality and are smaller in file size compared to a compressed image.

For hyperlinks, older versions of Adobe InDesign and Acrobat (Adobe Reader) require you to define a hyperlink for an email and website address via the hyperlinks panel in Adobe InDesign. Within later versions you can just type out an email or website address and Acrobat will automatically make it a hyperlink that you can click, as long as you enable hyperlinks upon export.
Turn objects into buttons

By default all the items within the document are objects so the forward and backwards arrows, and the home icon need to be converted into buttons. Right click each object, select interactive, convert to button. If you have sub objects within a group make sure that you convert the top level group into a button otherwise any missed objects will be ignored.

Select the newly converted button and go to the buttons panel, here you can select rollover and adjust the appearance, for when the user rolls over the button. There is no need to activate the click option because this button will be going to a new page. Therefore you would not notice a click action.

Repeat this for all the buttons within your document. At this point I am leaving out the main category buttons on the home page as these will have additional features and need to be handled differently.
Creating the category buttons

When creating rollovers, InDesign initially only allows you to adjust the colour and style of the shape. If you wish to adjust the physical shape of the button or to change the object entirely it would require further instruction. The category button will be made up of two separate objects. The first will be a folder closed and the second will be a folder open. As the user rolls over the closed folder it will open.

I have created these vector objects and pasted one on top of the other in InDesign, then converted each object separately into a button.

I have called the closed folder button “CV A” and the open folder button “CV B”. It is recommended to name each folder button with something that is easily recognisable. The window for adjusting the state of these buttons is very small, so the easier it is to find the button the better. The button will have an action applied to it that will hide one object and then at the same time unhide the other as you roll over. The same applies for on roll off.

Select “CV A” and go to the buttons panel. Choose on roll over as the event and click the plus sign to add a new action to that event, choose show/hide buttons. You will notice under the small list of all your buttons there are three icons, if you hover over them they will give an explanation of what they are; show, hide and ignore. We want to ignore all buttons except “CV A” and “CV B”. In the “on roll over” event “CV A” needs to be hidden and “CV B” needs to be shown. Change the event to be on roll off and add a new show/hide buttons action. Change “CV A” to show and “CV B” to hide, and then make sure all other buttons are ignored. Repeat this step for all of your category buttons.

Exporting the interactive PDF

Adobe InDesign CS5 has a new feature that allows you to select a preset for exporting interactive documents. Adobe has simplified the export process by allowing the user to choose whether the PDF is for print or interaction. If you have CS5, then go file, export and choose PDF interactive. You can leave all the settings at their defaults, but depending on your document size you may want to reduce the resolution or image quality so that the PDF portfolio is small enough to email. Personally I would not go below 96 for resolution and medium for JPEG quality. The default page transition is fade, you can choose to have another transition here or turn it off altogether.

With older versions of InDesign you must remember to include hyperlinks and interactive elements within the export options.

Linking the buttons using Adobe Acrobat pro

Using the select object tool, right click the open folder button and then choose properties. The button will highlight blue if selected correctly. Go to the actions tab and you will notice there are already some actions in place. These are the actions for the show/hide roll over effect created earlier in Adobe InDesign.

With the options still open, go to select action and choose go to a page view.Click add and you will be faced with a pop up window.

Keep the pop up window open and scroll using your mouse wheel to the corresponding page you want that button to link to and then click set link.

Next re-select the same object and go to properties once more. You will notice that there is now a new action stored. Highlight go to a page in this document and click edit.

Here you need to set the zoom level so that when a button is clicked the page always fits to page and stays at maximum zoom. If you have a mix of portrait and landscape pages, when navigating the pages via buttons you will experience various zoom levels. Repeat linking pages and setting the zoom for all the navigation buttons within the PDF, this includes the home, previous and next buttons.

At any time you can come off the select object tool by selecting the pan tool. You can then test your buttons to make sure they go to the right pages and at the correct zoom level.

Prepare for full screen viewing

Go file, properties and tick open in full screen mode. As the name suggests, when the file is opened by a user, the PDF will automatically open in full screen giving the maximum viewing area.

When in full screen mode, Adobe Acrobat has a new function for navigating the pages. This is left mouse click to go forward and right mouse click to go backwards. Because the PDF is being navigated via buttons we don’t want this to be an option. Simply because if a user clicks anywhere on the screen it will jump to a different page. This function can be disabled by adding in a simple script. Go to document JavaScripts and add a new script called hideCursor by typing in the script name field. Click add and a pop up window with a script editor will appear. Remove any existing code within the editor and add the following:

function hideCursor()
{
}

Click ok and then close. Save the PDF and reopen, the PDF should open in full screen mode. Test your button navigation and check that you cannot navigate the pages by left and right clicking your mouse. You still have the ability to navigate through the pages via the keyboard arrow keys; unfortunately this is part of the Adobe Acrobat API and cannot be disabled.
Nerd talk: if you were once apt at assembling scale models of X-Wings and TIE Fighters or attentively taking apart and rebuilding that huge Millennium Falcon toy you got for your 8th Christmas, then you clearly spent significant parts of your childhood speculating on the nuts and bolts that made up the built universe of Star Wars. After all, you figured that the Death Star had to have had more than one corridor or one shipping dock (that much was revealed in Return of the Jedi). You’d seen the making-of videos, when Lucas and co. rigged scaled models of ships, cities, and planets alike with sparks and miniature explosions. And you glimpsed those early, Sketchpad-esque animations detailing the mechanics of Operation: Skyhook, Luke and friends’ mission to destroy the first Death Star. But where were the drawings and plans–the details!?
Well, hopefully, with age you’ve adopted more serious concerns and sought out life’s greater mysteries and meanings (though we’re not sure that’s entirely true for all of you). But for nostalgia’s sake, you’ll want to get your hands on Star Wars: the Blueprints, a book so big it needed its own trailer (below). The new tome contains the most comprehensive compilation of working drawings and architectural plans that served as the basis for the ships, space ports, planets, buildings and infrastructure against which the Star Wars films played out. With over 500 photographs and illustrations, the book lays out in detail everything from the workings of Tatooine’s quirky farming machinery to the robotic constitution of R2-D2. Here’s to hoping you’ll be able to build your own droid!
The book, which weight 35 pounds and cost $500, is limited to 5,000 prints, so you’ll have to act fast to secure your own copy. To find out more about the book, click here, or watch the trailer above.
Eikongraphia congratulates Geoff Manaugh with a hattrick. His blog, BLDGBLOG, leads the chart for the third time in a row. Further congratulations go to all the other bloggers that made it into the MoPo 2009. You are among the twenty-five most popular blogs on architecture worldwide.
A weblog is included in the MoPo 2009 when it’s an English blog on architecture written by a single writer. The popularity of the blog is measured by the number of subscribers (Google Reader + Bloglines) and the number of hits in Google (Google + Google Images).
In last year’s edition the number of links in Technorati was also included in the equation. The unreliability of Technorati, where some bloggers already complained about back then, by now has become a widespread reality: half of the blogs in the MoPo 2009 aren’t recognized by the website. As a parameter Technorati therefore has become useless.
25. The Arch
In comparison with the edition last year the ranking hasn’t developed dramatically. Architecture.mnp has entered the Top 5, while Interactive Architecture has tumbled from a fifth place to the 17th place. Archidose and City of Sound switched places, Pruned is one place down. The irony of the MoPo is that each new edition looks a lot like the one before. There are again no female bloggers among the twenty-two. For next year I am thinking of measuring growth, instead of size.
BLDGBLOG reigns the architecture blogosphere. Between 2007 and 2008 the total number of visitors tripled from one to three million, since last year that number has again dubbled to a total of almost six million. Which rookie can challenge that? Landscape+Urbanism has entered the MoPo at the twelfth place and is thereby the runner-up of the year. But with less than a thousand subscribers to its rss-feed, it is a long way to the more than 11,000 subscribers of BLDGBLOG. Even the blog in second place, Archidose, features less than a third of that.
The Where blog has been excluded from this year’s MoPo as it is now written by a bunch of people. If Eikongraphia had been included in the ranking, it would have ended up between the fifth and sixth place. One place up. Quite popular blogs that just missed the cut are in consecutive order: Varnelis; Loud Paper, and Fantastic Journal.
A blog that I can recommend is the blog by NL Architects. I would love to see more architects starting a blog like that! Maybe next year in the MoPo 2010?
With all this data, we started to compare our sites listings, and given their focus we decided to (1) shorten the list to the top 40 (after those, most sites don´t update much often) and (2) separate this listing in 2 types of sites: sites devoted to architecture only and sites that mix architecture with other subjects (trends, design, sustainability).
3 Conclusions

It´s clear that architecture exclusive sites are less popular than the ones that cover architecture, trends and design.

Most of the websites are in English (same as almost the whole Internet).

The frequency of updates is highly valued by visitors, which explain us why our blog isn´t at the end of the ranks despite being started a couple of months ago. Sites that have a better rank update frequently, even several times at a day.

During the next weeks we will present and explain some of these websites, in order to clarify the new panorama of architecture publications on the Web.
Also, as we found out that MoPo wasn´t accurate from our point of view, some of you might think the same about ours, so feel free to leave your comments and recommended sites.
And now, to the ranks:
