പാരിസ്‌• ഇസ്‌ലാം വിരുദ്ധ സിനിമയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള വിവാദം കൊടുമ്പിരി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കെ മുഹമ്മദ്‌ നബിയുടെ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച്‌ ഫ്രഞ്ച്‌ വീക്കിലിയും അടുത്ത വിവാദത്തിന്‌ തിരികൊളുത്തി. ഫ്രാന്‍സിലെ ചാര്‍ലി ഹെബ്‌ഡൊ എന്ന വീക്കിലിയാണ്‌ നബിയുടെ കാര്‍ട്ടുണ്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്‌. പ്രതിഷേധം ഇരമ്പിയതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന്‌ വീക്കിലിയുടെ ഓഫിസിനു കനത്ത കാവല്‍ ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തി. വിവാദ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്‌ പ്രകോപനപരമാണെന്ന്‌ ഫ്രാന്‍സിന്റെ വിദേശകാര്യമന്ത്രി ലോറന്റ്‌ ഫാബിയസ്‌ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു. മുസ്‌ലിം രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ ഫ്രഞ്ച്‌ എംബസികള്‍ക്കു സുരക്ഷ ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയതായി മന്ത്രി പറഞ്ഞു. കഴിഞ്ഞ നവംബറില്‍ നബിയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള കാരിക്കേച്ചര്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചതിന്‌ ഇതേ വീക്കിലിയുടെ ഓഫിസ്‌ ബോംബ്‌ സ്‌ഫോടനത്തില്‍ തകര്‍ത്തിരുന്നു.

ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി• യുപിഎ സര്‍ക്കാരിനെതിരെ മമതാ ബാനര്‍ജി ഉയര്‍ത്തിയ ഭീഷണിയുടെ വെളിച്ചത്തില്‍ കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാര്‍ പിന്നോട്ട്‌ ചുവടുവച്ച്‌ തുടങ്ങി. സബ്‌സിഡിയുള്ള പാചകവാതക സിലിണ്ടറുകളുടെ എണ്ണം ആറില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ ഒന്‍പതാക്കണമെന്ന്‌ കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ്‌ ഭരിക്കുന്ന സംസ്‌ഥാനങ്ങളോട്‌ ആവശ്യപ്പെടാന്‍ ഇന്നു ചേര്‍ന്ന കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ്‌ കോര്‍കമ്മിറ്റി യോഗം തീരുമാനിച്ചു.

മമതാ ബാനര്‍ജി ഉയര്‍ത്തിയ നിര്‍ദേശങ്ങള്‍ പരിഗണിക്കുമെന്ന്‌ കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ്‌ വക്‌താവ്‌ ജനാര്‍ദന്‍ ദ്വിവേദി പറഞ്ഞു. ഡീസല്‍ വിലവര്‍ധന കുറയ്ക്കില്ല. ഈ നിര്‍ദേശപ്രകാരം മൂന്നു സിലിണ്ടറുകള്‍ക്കുള്ള സബ്‌സിഡി സംസ്‌ഥാന സര്‍ക്കാരുകള്‍ വഹിക്കേണ്ടിവരും.

അതേസമയം സാമ്പത്തിക പരിഷ്‌ക്കരണ തീരുമാനങ്ങളില്‍ പിന്നോട്ടില്ലെന്ന്‌ ധനമന്ത്രി പി. ചിദംബരം അറിയിച്ചു. മമത ബാനര്‍ജിയുമായി സംസാരിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചുവെന്നും അവര്‍ പ്രതികരിച്ചില്ലെന്നും പി.ചിദംബരം കൂട്ടിചേചര്‍ത്തു.

കൊച്ചി • ഡീസല്‍ വിലവര്‍ധനയുടെ പേരില്‍ ബസ്‌ ചാര്‍ജ്‌ കൂട്ടണമെന്ന ബസ്‌ ഉടമകളുടെ ആവശ്യം അനാവശ്യമാണെന്നു സെന്റര്‍ ഫോര്‍ കണ്‍സ്യൂമര്‍ എജ്യൂക്കേഷന്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി.

മിനിമം ചാര്‍ജ്‌ ഏഴു രൂപയാക്കുക, കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ നിരക്ക്‌ 70 പൈസയാക്കുക, വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളു ടെ കണ്‍സഷന്‍ യഥാര്‍ഥ നിരക്കിന്റെ പകുതിയാക്കുക എന്നീ ആവശ്യങ്ങളാണു ബസ്‌ ഉടമകള്‍ പ്രധാനമായും മുന്നോട്ടുവയ്ക്കുന്നത്‌.

എന്നാല്‍, 2011 ഓഗസ്‌റ്റില്‍ നടപ്പാക്കിയ ചാര്‍ജ്‌ വര്‍ധനയിലൂടെ കിലോമീറ്ററിന്‌ അഞ്ചു രൂപയോളം അധിക ലാഭം ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നതു മറച്ചുവച്ചാണ്‌ ബസുടമകള്‍ നഷ്‌ടക്കണക്കു നിരത്തുന്നതെന്നു സെന്റര്‍ ഫോര്‍ കണ്‍സ്യൂമര്‍ എജ്യൂക്കേഷന്‍ കുറ്റപ്പെടുത്തി. ചാര്‍ജ്‌ വര്‍ധനവിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന്‌ ഒരു ബസിനു 1000 രൂപ മുതല്‍ 1500 രൂപയുടെ വരെ അധിക വരുമാനം ലഭിച്ചു. ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ ഡീസല്‍ വിലവര്‍ധനയുടെ പേരിലുണ്ടായ അധികച്ചെലവാകട്ടെ കിലോമീറ്ററിന്‌ ഒന്നര രൂപ മാത്രമെന്നും സംഘടന ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നു.

ബസ്‌ ചാര്‍ജ്‌ വര്‍ധന ഇന്നു

മന്ത്രിതല യോഗം ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യും.!

നാറ്റ്‌പാക്‌ 2011 സെപ്‌റ്റംബറില്‍ സര്‍ക്കാരിനു സമര്‍പ്പിച്ച കണക്കുകള്‍ അനുസരിച്ച്‌ ഓര്‍ഡിനറി ബസിന്‌ 28.84 രൂപയും ഫാസ്‌റ്റ്‌ പാസഞ്ചര്‍ ബസിനു 23.31 രൂപയുമാണ്‌ ഒരു കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ഓടാനുള്ള പ്രവര്‍ത്തന ചെലവ്‌. ഫാസ്‌റ്റ്‌ പാസഞ്ചര്‍ ബസുകള്‍ ദിവസം 400– 500 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ഓടുമ്പോള്‍ ഓര്‍ഡിനറി ബസുകള്‍ 250–300 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ മാത്രമാണ്‌ ഓടുന്നത്‌. ഡീസല്‍ വില വര്‍ധന മൂലം ഓര്‍ഡിനറി ബസുകള്‍ക്കു കിലോമീറ്ററിന്‌ 1.43 രൂപയും ഫാസ്‌റ്റ്‌ പാസഞ്ചര്‍ ബസുകള്‍ക്ക്‌ 1.11 രൂപയുമാണ്‌ അധികച്ചെലവു വരുന്നത്‌.

കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം അഞ്ചു രൂപയോളം കിലോമീറ്ററിന്‌ അധിക ലാഭം ലഭിച്ചിടത്താണ്‌ ഡീസല്‍ വില വര്‍ധന മൂലം ഒന്നര രൂപയ്ക്കു താഴെ അധികച്ചെലവു വന്നിരിക്കുന്നത്‌. കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം ബസ്‌ ചാര്‍ജ്‌ വര്‍ധനയില്‍ ‘ഫിക്‌സഡ്‌ കോസ്‌റ്റ്‌ ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയതിനെതിരെ തങ്ങള്‍ ഹൈക്കോടതിയില്‍ നല്‍കിയ കേസ്‌ തീര്‍പ്പാകും മുന്‍പു പുതിയ നിരക്കു വര്‍ധന സംബന്ധിച്ചു ചര്‍ച്ച നടത്തുന്നതു ന്യായീകരിക്കാനാവില്ലെന്നു സംഘടനാ നേതാക്കള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

മിനിമം ചാര്‍ജ്‌ ഏഴു രൂപയാക്കണമെന്ന ബസുടമകളുടെ ആവശ്യം അംഗീകരിച്ചാല്‍ അടുത്ത ഫെയര്‍ സ്‌റ്റേജ്‌ ഒന്‍പതു രൂപയെങ്കിലുമായി നിശ്‌ചയിക്കേണ്ടി വരും. അഞ്ചു കിലോമീറ്ററിനു ശേഷം 7.5 കിലോമീറ്ററിലാണ്‌ അടുത്ത ഫെയര്‍ സ്‌റ്റേജ്‌. ബസുടമകളുടെ ആവശ്യം അതേപടി അംഗീകരിച്ചാല്‍ ഏഴര കിലോമീറ്ററിന്‌ 9.50 രൂപ നല്‍കേണ്ടി വരും. നിലവില്‍ ഇത്‌ ആറു രൂപയാണ്‌..

തിരുവനന്തപുരം• ഡീസല്‍ വില കൂട്ടിയ പശ്‌ചാത്തലത്തില്‍ ബസ്‌ ചാര്‍ജ്‌ വര്‍ധന സംബന്ധിച്ച്‌ ഇന്നുചേരുന്ന മന്ത്രിതല യോഗം ചര്‍ച്ചചെയ്യും. ഇന്നലെ കൂടിയ മന്ത്രിസഭാ യോഗത്തില്‍ ഗതാഗതമന്ത്രി ആര്യാടന്‍ മുഹമ്മദ്‌ പങ്കെടുത്തിരുന്നില്ല. ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിലാണ്‌ ഇന്നു മന്ത്രിതല യോഗം ചേര്‍ന്ന്‌ ഈ പ്രശ്‌നം ചര്‍ച്ചചെയ്യാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചതെന്നു മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ഉമ്മന്‍ ചാണ്ടി അറിയിച്ചു.

ഡീസല്‍ വില വര്‍ധനയില്‍ ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ള ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടും പ്രതിഷേധവും കേന്ദ്രത്തെ അറിയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. വില വര്‍ധനയിലൂടെ ലഭിക്കുമായിരുന്ന അധിക നികുതി സംസ്‌ഥാന സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ വേണ്ടെന്നു വച്ചു. ലീറ്ററിന്‌ 1.14 രൂപയുടെ കുറവാണ്‌ ഉണ്ടായത്‌. പ്രതിവര്‍ഷം 168 കോടി രൂപയുടെ വരുമാനം വേണ്ടെന്നു വച്ചാണു സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ഈ ഇളവു നല്‍കിയതെന്നു മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി.

An LPG tanker lorry exploded near the Chala temple, six km from the town, around 11 p.m. on Monday, leaving at least 12 persons, including women, with burns. Six of the seriously injured have been taken to the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital.

The fire spread extensively in the area following the explosion, but by midnight the blaze was brought under control, reports said. Though it was a major accident, the scale of destruction was much less than what was feared initially, as rescue operations were initiated by the police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel immediately after the explosion. The police cordoned off the area.

Reports said the driver and the cleaner of the lorry had not been located. Whether or not they were injured is not known.

Police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Kannur and Thalassery rushed to the spot to secure the area and check the spread of the fire. Reports said there were two explosions. Local people said that they could see fire raging in the area. Even the Fire and Rescue Services personnel could not initially reach near the spot because of the extensive fire that covered a large area. There were reports that the explosion occurred after the driver alighted from the lorry on finding a gas leak.

Initial reports said five houses had caught fire following the explosion. People rushed out of the houses soon after. Several shops in the area have been destroyed. Top officials, including police officers, have rushed to the spot. Ambulances from Kannur and Thalassery were summoned.

Fire units from different parts of the district were pressed into service to bring the fire under control. Hundreds of local people were engaged in taking the injured to nearby hospitals. The police said vehicular traffic in the area was stopped following the incident.

കണ്ണൂര്‍ • മൂന്നു നിമിഷം. മൂന്നു സ്‌ഫോടനം. തലശേരി–കണ്ണൂര്‍ ദേശീയപാത ബൈപാസിനു സമീപം ചാല ക്ഷേത്രപരിസരത്ത്‌ ഇന്നലെ അര്‍ധരാത്രി ഗ്യാസ്‌ ടാങ്കര്‍ ദുരന്തത്തിനിടയാക്കിയ സ്‌ഫോടനം നീണ്ടുനിന്നതു നിമിഷങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രം.

ടാങ്കര്‍ലോറി അതിവേഗത്തിലായിരുന്നുവെന്നു നാട്ടുകാര്‍ പറയുന്നു. റോഡിനു നടുവിലെ ഡിവൈഡറില്‍ ഇടിച്ചുമറിഞ്ഞ ഉടന്‍, കട്ടിയുള്ള വെളുത്ത പുകയാണു പുറത്തുവന്നത്‌. നിമിഷനേരം കൊണ്ടു പരിസരപ്രദേശം മുഴുവന്‍ പുകപടലത്തിനുള്ളിലായി. മൂക്കു തുളയ്ക്കുന്ന മണവും പിന്നാലെയുണ്ടായി. പുക പടര്‍ന്നു കയറിയ ഇടങ്ങളെല്ലാം തീ വിഴുങ്ങി.

ഇടിയുടെ ശബ്‌ദം കേട്ടു വീടിനു പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയവരാണു ഗ്യാസ്‌ ചോര്‍ച്ച കണ്ടു പരിസരവാസികളെ വിവരമറിയിച്ചത്‌. വൈദ്യുതിബന്ധം വിഛേദിക്കണമെന്നും മൊബൈല്‍ ഫോണ്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിപ്പിക്കരുതെന്നും വിളിച്ചുപറഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ടു പലരും നാട്ടുകാരെ വിളിച്ചുണര്‍ത്തി. അതുകേട്ടു പുറത്തു വന്നു വീടുവിട്ടിറങ്ങിയവരാണു പരുക്കു കൂടാതെ രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടത്‌.

മുന്നറിയിപ്പിന്റെ ഗൌരവം മനസ്സിലാവാതെ പലരും വീടിനകത്തു തന്നെ കുടുങ്ങുകയായിരുന്നു. റോഡും പരിസരവും പുക മൂടിയതിനു തൊട്ടുപിന്നാലെയാണു സ്‌ഫോടനമുണ്ടായത്‌. ഒന്നിനു പിറകെ ഒന്നായി മൂന്നു സ്‌ഫോടനശബ്‌ദം കേട്ടതായി നാട്ടുകാര്‍ പറയുന്നു. ആദ്യസ്‌ഫോടനത്തില്‍ തന്നെ പുകച്ചുരുളുകള്‍ തീഗോളങ്ങളായി മാറിയിരുന്നു.

സ്‌ഫോടനത്തിനു വഴിയൊരുക്കിയത്‌മൊബൈല്‍ ഫോണ്‍ ഉപയോഗം

ടാങ്കര്‍ലോറി മറിഞ്ഞ വിവരമറിഞ്ഞു പുറത്തിറങ്ങി നോക്കിയ ചിലരും അപകടം കണ്ടു വഴിയില്‍ നിര്‍ത്തിയ വാഹനങ്ങളിലെ ചില യാത്രക്കാരും മൊബൈല്‍ ഫോണ്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചതു സ്‌ഫോടനത്തിനു കാരണമായിട്ടുണ്ടാവാമെന്നും അഗ്നിശമന സേന സംശയിക്കുന്നു. ഗ്യാസ്‌ വന്‍തോതില്‍ ചോര്‍ന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന സ്‌ഥലത്തു മൊബൈല്‍ ഫോണ്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതു തീപിടിത്തത്തിനിടയാക്കാം. ഗ്യാസ്‌ ചോര്‍ച്ചയും ആദ്യ സ്‌ഫോടനവും കഴിഞ്ഞ ഉടന്‍ പൊലീസും അഗ്നിശമന സേനയും ഇതു സംബന്ധിച്ചു നാട്ടുകാര്‍ക്കു മുന്നറിയിപ്പു നല്‍കിയിരുന്നു.

പുകയില്‍നിന്ന്‌ ഓടി രക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നതിനിടയിലാണു സ്‌ഫോടന ശബ്‌ദം കേട്ടത്‌. ഒറ്റ നിമിഷം കൊണ്ടു മാനംമുട്ടെ ഉയരത്തിലാളുന്ന തീനാളങ്ങളാണു കണ്ടത്‌. ഇടവഴിയിലൂടെ ഓടുന്നതിനിടെ കാലില്‍ വന്നുതൊട്ട പുകച്ചുരുളിനു തീപിടിച്ചു ഭാസ്‌കരന്റെ ഇടതുപാദത്തിനാണു പൊള്ളലേറ്റത്‌. പിന്നാലെ രണ്ടു സ്‌ഫോടനശബ്‌ദം കൂടി കേട്ടെങ്കിലും തിരിഞ്ഞുനോക്കാനുള്ള മന:സാന്നിധ്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. പരുക്കേറ്റ മറ്റു ചിലരോടൊപ്പം വാഹനം ഏര്‍പ്പാടാക്കിയാണ്‌ ആശുപത്രിയിലെത്തിയത്‌.

ആര്‍എസ്‌പി ദേശീയനേതാവും മുന്‍മന്ത്രിയുമായ കെ. പങ്കജാക്ഷന്‍ അന്തരിച്ചു. 85 വയസായിരുന്നു. തിരുവനന്തപുരം മെഡിക്കല്‍ കോളജില്‍ ചികിത്സയിലായിരിക്കെയാണ്‌ മരണം. സംസ്‌ഥാനത്തെ അഞ്ചുമന്ത്രിസഭകളില്‍ അംഗമായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം ആര്‍ എസ്‌ പിയുടെ ശക്‌തനായ നേതാവായിരുന്നു. വിവിധ മന്ത്രിസഭകളില്‍ പൊതുമരാമത്ത്‌, തൊഴില്‍, സ്‌പോര്‍ട്‌സ്‌ വകുപ്പുകളുടെ ചുമതല വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. രണ്ടു പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകാലം നിയമസഭാംഗമായിരുന്നു. ഐതിഹാസിക സമരങ്ങളുടെ അണിയറയില്‍നിന്ന്‌ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ച പങ്കജാക്ഷന്‍ മുന്നണി രാഷ്‌ട്രീയത്തിലെ തന്ത്രജ്‌ഞനായിരുന്നു. ട്രേഡ്‌ യൂണിയന്‍ രംഗത്തെ ശക്‌തമായ സാന്നിധ്യമായിരുന്നു.

Govind is son of a rickshaw vendor from Varanasi. He has cleared the IAS toppers list this year; thus setting an example of empowerment through education. Although due credit goes also to his father who has toiled all the past years to educate his son with a dream in his eyes!

When Govind got the news of clearing the Civil Services Exam, tears ran down Govind Jaiswal's face and refused to stop. Staring him in the face was the only thing he had ever wanted, and now that he had achieved it.

He waited till the tears dried up, till the news sunk in and made that one phone call on which depended the hopes of his entire family.

Govind, the son of an illiterate rickshaw vendor in Varanasi, had grown up with cruel taunts like 'However much you study, you will still be a rickshaw puller.' He had studied with cotton stuffed in his ears to drown the noise of printing machines and generators below his window in a poor neighbourhood where small workshops existed cheek by jowl with tiny residential quarters.

He had given Math tuitions to supplement the paltry sum his father could afford to send him each month. His ailing father had sold a small plot of land to give Govind about Rs 40,000 so that he could move to Delhi which would provide him a better place to study.

Throughout his life, he had lived with only one dream -- to become an officer of the Indian Administrative Service. For him that was the only way. And when he broke the news to his family, that he was ranked 48 among 474 successful candidates in his first attempt at the exam -- it was the turn of his three sisters and father to weep with unbridled joy.

I could not afford to have any other career goal. My life would have been absolutely futile had I not made it into the civil services," says Govind, just back from his medicals in New Delhi, mandatory for the IAS.

"You must understand that my circumstances were such that besides the Civil Services, I had no option. I didn't have much of a chance with lower government jobs because they are mostly fixed, neither could I start a business because I had no money. The only thing I could do was work hard at my studies."

It was almost impossible for him to study in the one room he shared with his family. To add to his woes was the power cut that extended between 10 and 14 hours every day. The moment the lights went out, he had to shut the window to block out the deafening noise of generators in the many workshops around his home.

So in search for a quiet place to study, he briefly shared a friend's room at the Banaras Hindu University. Since that did not help him much, he did what many civil services aspirants in northern India do -- he moved to New Delhi.

For his son to make a fresh start in a city Govind had never visited before, Narayan Jaiswal, Govind's father, sold the only remaining plot of land he had saved after getting his three daughters married.

Working for ten years at the government ration shop, Narayan earned a living by weighing goods at the store. One day when the shop shut down, he bought one rickshaw and hired it out. He added three more and at one time was prosperous enough to own about 36 rickshaws.
That was a period of financial security and Narayan was prudent enough to buy three small plots of land. With three daughters to marry off, he knew he would need it in times to come. But bad times soon befell the family. His wife passed away when Govind was in school. For 10 years there was acute hardship. The rickshaws dwindled.

On his meager earnings, the uneducated rickshaw vendor with a hearing disability continued the education of his children. The girls were married after their graduation -- Narayan sold two pieces of land for the weddings, the last plot was sold to achieve his Govinda's dream.

Narayan gave his son Rs 40,000 to prepare for his Civil Services exam in New Delhi and pursue his childhood dream of becoming an IAS officer. For the next three years, he sent his son between Rs 2,500 and Rs 3,000 every month, sometimes foregoing the expense of treating the septic wound in his foot that continues to nag him till today.

Outside his narrow lane, opposite the Varanasi City railway station, where Narayan Jaiswal parks his rickshaws and spends most of his waking hours, he still walks barefooted with a bandage, one end hanging loose and scraping the dirty road.

"Beyond this year, my father could not have afforded to send Govind any more money. It was getting very tough for him. Govind was earning Rs 1,500 from tuitions, I don't know what he would have done if he didn't make it to the IAS this year. My father could not sleep for 10 days before the results came," says Govind's eldest sister Nirmala, whose son is almost the same age as her brother.

Now that he will earn Rs 8,000 as his starting salary during his two-year training period in Mussoorie, Govind says his first priority is getting good treatment for his father's wound.

"I want to look after him, I don't know if he will leave Varanasi but I will definitely move him out of this rented room that we have lived for 35 years."

If his son's new job dramatically changes things for the better, Narayan Jaiswal is quite unaffected by it. He is surprised by the scores of journalists and well wishers flocking to his house.

Until now, courier delivery boys found his house with great difficulty but now even the fruit cart-wallah, one-and-a-half kilometres away, will tell you where the 'IAS' house is.

"I like my work. I haven't decided about the future -- what could be a better place than Kashi? As long as my son looks after me, what else can one want?" he says, visibly uncomfortable with the media spotlight.

Having lived his life in Varanasi, the holy city on the banks of the Ganga, Govind has given his home state Uttar Pradesh as his preferred region of posting. If he doesn't get UP, he is open to being sent to any state in India.

"Varanasi needs a tight administration. As for me, I want to be a good officer. We are the agents of change and I as an administrator would like to inform common people about their right to know, their right to information. The benefit should finally go to the people."

His hero is President A P J Abdul Kalam. Govind is reading the Hindi translation of the President's best-selling book On Wings of Fire and takes out a nicely thumbed copy from a plastic bag.

"After Gandhiji, President Kalam has given us a dream and the power to dream. His dream is of a developed India and he is a symbol of many common people's dreams."

In a time when the Indian bureaucracy has its drawbacks like a lack of accountability, corruption and perpetuating a system that was handed down by the British to rule a subordinate population Govind's thoughts are fired by the idealism of youth. He insists his idealism will not be watered down in future years, that he will not allow himself to be influenced.

"I am a product of my circumstances that has been wrought with hardships. When I go out as an officer my character will be put to the test, and then I want to see what a real man I am."

Umm Al Quwain: A five-year-old Emirati girl died on Friday evening after her grandmother forgot her in the car for almost two hours while she was visiting a friend in Umm Al Quwain, Colonel Khamis Salem Buharoon, Director of Umm Al Quwain Police, said.

The incident happened in front of the house of the grandmother’s friend.

The child was buried at the Umm Al Quwain graveyard at 10.30pm, Buharoon said.

The grandmother went to visit her friend with three of her grandchildren, including the one who dead. The two other children asked their grandmother for permission to buy something from the nearest supermarket. The grandmother thought that the third child had gone with them and locked the car and went inside her friend’s house, Buharoon said.

he children returned and told the grandmother that the five-year-old girl was sleeping inside the car. They rushed to the car to find the girl motionless; the child was pronounced dead at the site, Buharoon said.

“The child suffocated due to the high temperature inside the car,” Buharoon said. Police have ruled out foul play in the incident.

This is the second such incident in less than a week in the UAE. On July 2, a three-year-old Emirati boy died after his family forgot him in the car for almost four hours in front of their house in Kalba.

Buharoon urged all guardians to be careful during summer and not to leave their wards inside vehicles.

But it is not only during summer that children may die of suffocation when left alone in a locked vehicle.

“Death due to suffocation or lack of oxygen inside a car can happen in any climate, even during winter. But in this part of the world, cases like this occur mostly during summer months,” Dr Kassim Rawther, a physican who specialises in internal medicine at Aster Medical Centre, told Gulf News.

An closed car is potentially lethal to a child regardless of the temperature outside as the temperature inside the car increases within minutes. A 2008 study by the University of Western Australia said that temperatures in parked cars may reach up to 25 degrees Celsius more than the temperature outside the car on a typical sunny day. This means leaving a child inside a car in the UAE during summer months exposes him to up to 60 degrees Celsius heat.

“The child’s body surface area is smaller and as such will not be able to regulate heat as well as adult bodies do. In the first couple of minutes, the child will sweat profusely because of the heat. But the sweat glands will eventually be in shock after prolonged exposure to heat,” Dr Rawther said, adding that the child may fall unconscious and die within minutes.

Besides heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, the child may also be exposed to toxic chemicals released by car upholstery when exposed to too much heat in contained spaces.

To avoid such tragedies, parents or guardians must make sure that all the passengers, including pets, have left the car before locking it.

നാട്ടിലേയ്ക്ക്‌ പണം അയക്കാന്‍ നല്‍കുന്ന ഫീസിന്റെ 12.36 ശതമാനും സേവന നികുതി എടുക്കുമെന്നാണ്‌ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ അറിയിപ്പ്‌. എന്ന്‌ വച്ചാല്‍ ഒരു ലക്ഷം രൂപ നാട്ടിലേയ്ക്ക്‌ യുഎഇ എക്‌സേഞ്ച്‌ വഴി അയക്കുന്നു എന്നു കരുതുക. അതിന്‌ ഇപ്പോള്‍ എടുക്കുന്ന ഫീസ്‌ 500 ആണെങ്കില്‍ 500 രൂപയുടെ 12.36 ശതമാനം കൂടി നല്‍കേണ്ടി വരും എന്നതാണ്‌. വാസ്‌തവത്തില്‍ ഇത്‌ പണം മാറ്റുന്ന ഏജന്‍സികളെ മാത്രം ബാധിക്കേണ്ട വിഷയമാണ്‌ എന്നാല്‍ ഇത്‌ ഉപഭോക്താവില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ എടുക്കുന്നതോടെ ഫലത്തില്‍ നഷ്‌ടം ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത്‌ ഉപഭോക്താവിനു തന്നെ.വിവിധ എജെന്‍സികള്‍ വഴി പണം അയക്കുന്നവര്‍ ഇനി എജെന്‍സിയുടെ ചാര്‍ജിനു പുറമേ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ സര്‍വീസ്‌ ടാക്‌സും കൊടുക്കേണ്ടി വരും.

കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ഇതുവരെ സര്‍വീസ്‌ ടാക്‌സ്‌ ഈടാക്കിയിരുന്നത്‌ ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ നല്‍കുന്ന സേവനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌ മാത്രമായിരുന്നു.എന്നാല്‍ ജൂലൈ ഒന്ന്‌ മുതല്‍ മണി ട്രാന്‍സ്‌ഫര്‍ എജെന്‍സികളെയും ഈ പരിധിയില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുത്താനാണ്‌ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ തീരുമാനം. വേറൊരു രാജ്യത്തും നിലവിലില്ലാത്ത ഈ നികുതി സംവിധാനം ഇന്ത്യ നടപ്പിലാക്കുന്നതില്‍ എങ്ങും പ്രതിഷേധമുയര്‍ന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്‌.

കേരള സാമ്പത്തിക മേഖലയുടെ നട്ടെല്ലായ പ്രവാസി നിക്ഷേപത്തിന്റെ വരവ്‌ കുത്തനെ കുറയാന്‍ പുതിയ നികുതി നിര്‍ദ്ദേശം കാരണമായേക്കും. കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം 50,000 കോടി രൂപയാണ്‌ വിദേശ മലയാളികള്‍ നാട്ടിലേക്ക്‌ അയച്ചത്‌. ഇത്തവണ രൂപയുടെ മൂല്യയിടിവ്‌ കൂടി കണക്കിലെടുത്താല്‍ ഇത്‌ 60,000 കോടിയിലെത്താന്‍ ഇടയുണ്ട്‌.

Key suspect in Mumbai terror attack held

New Delhi : Abu Jindal Hamza, a key suspect involved inthe 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and a member of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist organisation, has been arrested, police said Monday. He had previously been named as Abu Hamza.

According to sources, Home Minister P. Chidambaram is meeting with senior police officers, after which the details of the arrest will be revealed.

“Home Minister P. Chidambaram and senior police officers are in a meeting, after which more details of the arrest are likely to be shared,” a Delhi Police officer told IANS.

Hamza was arrested from Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) last week.

Hamza, alias Riasat Ali, is believed to be one of the key handlers of the terrorists involved in the 26/11 Mumbai attack. His alias had previously been given as Sayeed Zabi ud Deen, one of the many that he uses, police said.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said appropriate action will be taken after investigations conducted by the Delhi Police.

“The Delhi Police has been doing a magnificent job. First let them go through the investigation, they will then send a report to the government and we shall act accordingly,” Krishna told reporters.

Hamza was produced before a court here June 21 and was sent to 15 days police custody. He was said to be in Pakistan when the attacks took place in 2008, a police officer said. A total of 166 people had died in the attack.

A woman from a remote mountain village in Georgia is turning 130, making her the oldest person on Earth, officials in the former Soviet republic said.

Authorities in the former Soviet republic of Georgia claim that a woman from a remote mountain village has turned 130, making her the oldest person in the world.

Antisa Khvichava from western Georgia was born on 8 July 1880, said Georgiy Meurnishvili, spokesman for the civil registry at the justice ministry.

The woman, who lives with her 40-year-old grandson in a vine-covered country house in the mountains, retired from her job as a tea and corn picker in 1965 when she was 85, records say.

"I've always been healthy and I've worked all my life – at home and at the farm," said Khvichava. She never went to school to learn Georgian and speaks only the local language, Mingrelian.

Her age could not be independently verified because her birth certificate was lost – one of the great number to have disappeared in the past century amid revolutions and a civil war that followed the collapse of the Russian empire.

But Meurnishvili showed two Soviet-era documents that he says attest to her age. Scores of officials, neighbours, friends and descendants backed up her claim as the world's top senior.

The Gerontology Research Group recognises 114-year-old Eugenie Blanchard of St Barthelemy, France, as the world's oldest person. The organisation is yet to examine Khvichava's claim.

She has a son, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and six great- great-grandchildren.

Her 70-year-old son, Mikhail, apparently was born when his mother was 60. She said she also had two children from a previous marriage but they died of hunger during the second world war.

Although Khvichava has difficulty walking and has stayed largely in bed during the past seven years, she makes a point of hobbling unaided to the outhouse on the other side of the yard, according to Mikhail.

Although her fingers are cramped by age and she can no longer maintain her love of knitting, relatives say her mind remains sharp.

"Grandma has a very clear mind and she hasn't lost an ability to think rationally," said Khvichava's granddaughter, Shorena, who lives in a nearby village.

To mark her birthday a string ensemble played folk music on the lawn, while grandchildren offered traditional Mingrelian dishes such as corn porridge and spiced chicken with herbs to all guests at the party.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala, India's most literate state with the best socio-economic indicators, has ironically a history of political killings in which virtually every party is involved. A recent RTI inquiry revealed that 56 people fell victim to internecine violence in Kannur in the decade from January 1997 to March 2008.

Not everyone who dies is a political activist. Often, innocent citizens die in turf wars in which they have no stake.

Police officials and political activists say the main players in this ugly game of finishing off political foes are the leftwing Marxists and rightwing Hindu groups. Many victims are killed in the most gruesome manner, using swords or homemade bombs.

Kannur district in Kerala's north, considered the cradle of the Communist movement in the state, leads in tit-for-tat killings. This also happens to be a state with over 95 per cent literacy.

In February this year, a 22-year-old member of the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Abdul Shukoor, was killed allegedly by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activists publicly.

As if that was not enough, the killers sent gory pictures of the victim on MMS to IUML leaders. Shukoor was targeted for ambushing a local CPI-M leader, P Jayarajan, and party legislator TV Rajesh.

IUML legislator KM Shaji warned that the "murder politics" of the CPI-M, which heads the Left Democratic Front in Kerala, had contributed to the growth of Islamists. "The need of the hour is for a probe by a central agency into all political murders. The nexus between goons and politicians and police has to be exposed," he said.

Kerala's political killings came into national focus again following the murder in May of former CPI-M firebrand TP Chandrasekharan, who had left the party.

Former Kerala chief minister VS Achuthanandan, who Chandrasekharan looked up to until he quit the CPI-M, went to the victim's house and spoke out against the widely condemned killing.

As if in response, MM Mani, another CPI-M leader who belongs to the anti-Achuthanandan faction, blurted out that the Marxists believed in tit for tat killings. He related three such killings from the 1980s.

According to Mani, the victims were Congress workers. One was stabbed to death, another shot dead, and the third was beaten to death. Their crime? They had allegedly killed a CPI-M member. Mani's audacious claim shocked Kerala.

As police slapped murder charges against Mani and the rabble rouser claimed he had been "misquoted", the CPI-M's leadership denounced him and pledged to take action against him.

Former industries minister Elamaram Kareem says the CPI-M gets damned after every killing. "A section of the media and the Congress are against us. Reports of existence of 'party villages' (where CPI-M is the last word) in Kannur is a figment of imagination," he said.

Eminent historian MGS Narayanan challenged Kareem. "I am aware that numerous 'party villages' existed in Kannur, where everything was controlled by the party.

"With the advent of communication and invasion of television, things have changed. Now the situation is that these villages exist but with a lower level of intensity and control by the party."

Former state BJP president and leading criminal lawyer PS Sreedharan Pillai recalled that in 1978 when one Chandran started a Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) unit in Kannur, the Marxists killed him.

"Since then it has been a series of killings. Roughly, 150 BJP and RSS activists have been murdered in the state, mostly in north Kerala. Around an equal number have also died on the other side.

"I handle close to a dozen political murder cases," said Pillai.

Retired superintendent of police Subash Babu said the reason why politics of murder had reached such levels in Kerawla was due to the politician-goons-police nexus.

He said the CPI-M and Bharatiya Janata Party in particular "cultivate and promote criminals".

Kerala's killing fields have also claimed other victims. In 2010, college professor TJ Joseph's right palm was chopped off in Kochi by Islamists for making a reference in a question paper to Prophet Mohammed.

Afer that shocking attack, blamed on the Popular Front of India, almost all 54 accused were arrested.

Thiruvananthapuram: Citing increasing incidence of diseases like oral cancer, the Congress-led UDF government in Kerala on Friday announced a ban on the manufacture and sale of gutka and pan masala containing tobacco in the state with immediate effect.

Announcing the decision at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the ban on gutka and pan masala containing tobacco and nicotine was enforced under the provisions of Food Safety and Standards Regulation Act, 2011.

Kerala is the second state to ban the use of gutka and pan masala after Madhya Pradesh.

The increasing incidence of gutka-induced diseases like oral cancer had prompted the government to ban the products, Chandy said adding the Commissioner of Food Safety (Kerala) had issued the notification banning these products on May 22.

The government would strictly enforce the ban and take strong action in case of any violation, he said.

Chandy said he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking a total ban on these products in the country. However, the Centre had replied last month that the states had the jurisdiction to ban gutka and pan masala under the Food Safety and Standards Regulation Act, 2011.

The notification issued by the Commissioner prohibits the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of these products that contain tobacco and nicotine, in whatsoever name it is available in the market on Friday.

If you want to access something other than Facebook, you’ll have to pay a fee, starting at $4.95 and depending on the flight’s duration. Gogo says that Facebook is its number-one website visited by travelers, and Gogo hopes that customers will get hooked to the service during the free promotion in February.

Of course this means we all need to prepare ourselves for the inane status updates. Like: “I can see my house from here!” And: “Clouds… wow.”

Participating airlines–including American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, AirTran Airways, Alaska Airlines, Virgin America, and U.S. Airways–are partnering with Gogo Inflight Internet and Ford to provide airline passengers with free Facebook access. As Mashable reports:

Kathmandu: A small plane owned by a private company crashed in northwest Nepal on Monday, killing 15 people including 13 Indians, an official said.

The Dornier aircraft owned by private Agni Air company was carrying 18 passengers and a crew of three on a flight from the resort town of Pokhara to Jomsom when it crashed while landing at the mountain airstrip.

'Among those killed are 13 Indians and two Nepalis,' Kathmandu airport official Mahesh Shrestha said.

Six survivors had been taken to a hospital in Pokhara and the condition of at least one of them is critical, he said.

Two Danish tourists were among those rescued.

Jomsom, about 125 km (79 miles) northwest of Kathmandu, is a gateway for trekking in the region where Mount Annapurna, the world's 10th highest mountain, is located.

In September last year, 19 people returning after viewing Mount Everest were killed when their plane crashed in bad weather near Kathmandu.

It was not immediately clear what caused Monday's crash.

Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest mountain peaks, including Mount Everest.

Tens of thousands of hikers and foreign tourists go to Mount Everest and other trekking routes to see the lofty Himalayan peaks every year.

Tourism, a key source of earning for impoverished Nepal, accounts for nearly four percent of the gross domestic product and employs tens of thousands of people. Reuters

കാഠ്മണ്ഡു: നേപ്പാളിലെ ജോംസോമില്‍ ചെറുവിമാനം തകര്‍ന്ന് മരിച്ച 13 ഇന്ത്യക്കാരില്‍ ബാലതാരവും പരസ്യമോഡലുമായ തരുണി സച്ച്‌ദേവും അമ്മ ഗീത സച്ച്‌ദേവും. നേപ്പാളില്‍ ക്ഷേത്രദര്‍ശനത്തിന് പോയതായിരുന്നു ഇരുവരും.

50 ഓളം പരസ്യങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ള തരുണി മലയാളത്തില്‍ വിനയന്‍ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത വെള്ളിനക്ഷത്രം, സത്യം എന്നീ ചിത്രങ്ങളില്‍ അഭിനയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഹിന്ദിയില്‍ അമിതാഭ് ബച്ചന്റെ പാ അടക്കം നിരവധി ചിത്രങ്ങളില്‍ വേഷമിട്ടിട്ടുള്ള തരുണി മുംബൈ സ്വദേശിയാണ്. അപകടത്തില്‍ 15 പേരാണ് മരിച്ചത്. ആറുപേര്‍ അത്ഭുതകരമായി രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു.

നേപ്പാളിലെ പൊഖ്‌റയില്‍ നിന്നും മുസ്താങിലെ ജോംസോങ്ങ് വിനോദസഞ്ചാരമേഖലയിലേക്ക് പോവുകയായിരുന്ന അഗ്നിഎയറിന്റെ ഡോണിയര്‍ വിമാനമാണ് അപകടത്തില്‍പെട്ടത്.

അറുപത് കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ മാത്രം ദൈര്‍ഘ്യമുള്ള യാത്രക്കിടയിലായിരുന്നു അപകടം. രാവിലെ 9.30ന് പറന്നുയര്‍ന്ന വിമാനം പതിനഞ്ച് മിനുട്ടുകള്‍ക്കുശേഷം ഇറങ്ങാന്‍ തയ്യാറെടുക്കുന്നതിനിടെ മലയിടുക്കില്‍ വിമാനം തകര്‍ന്നുവീഴുകയായിരുന്നു.

പിടിച്ചെടുത്തു. ഡ്രഗ്‌സ് ആന്‍ഡ് മാജിക്കല്‍ റെമഡീസ് ആക്റ്റ് പ്രകാരം
വ്യാജപരസ്യം നല്‍കിയതിനും മിസ് ബ്രാന്റിംഗ് നടത്തിയതിനും ഉപഭോക്താക്കളെ
വഞ്ചിച്ചതിനും നിര്‍മ്മാതാക്കള്‍ക്കെതിരെ കേസെടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന്
ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥര്‍ അറിയിച്ചു. റെയ്ഡ് സംബന്ധിച്ച വാര്‍ത്ത എല്ലാ ചാനലുകളേയും
അറിയിച്ചെങ്കിലും കമ്പനികള്‍ ഇടപെട്ട് വാര്‍ത്ത മുക്കി.

ഈയിടെയായി ധാത്രി, ഇന്ദുലേഖ, ശ്രീധരീയം എന്നീ പ്രമുഖ ബ്രാന്‍ഡുകള്‍ വലിയ
തോതില്‍ പരസ്യം നല്‍കിയിരുന്നു. മുടി കൊഴിച്ചില്‍ തടയുന്നു, മുടി
വളര്‍ത്തുന്നു, തടി കുറയ്ക്കുന്നു എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഉപഭോക്താവിനെ വഞ്ചിക്കുന്ന
രീതിയില്‍ ആണ് പരസ്യം നല്‍കുന്നത്. വ്യാജ അവകാശവാദം പരസ്യം
നല്‍കുന്നതിനെതിരെ സംസ്ഥാന സര്‍ക്കാരിന് ലഭിച്ച പരാതിയിന്മേല്‍
ആരോഗ്യവകുപ്പ് സെക്രെട്ടറി നല്‍കിയ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശത്തെ തുടര്‍ന്നാണ് ഇന്നീ
റെയ്ഡും നടപടികളും ഉണ്ടായത്. പരസ്യത്തിലൂടെ തെറ്റായ അവകാശവാദം നല്‍കി
ഉപഭോക്താക്കളെ കബളിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് ഡ്രഗ്‌സ് ആന്‍ഡ് മാജിക്കല്‍ റെമഡീസ്
ആക്റ്റ് പ്രകാരം ഒരു വര്ഷം വരെ തടവും പിഴയും ലഭിക്കാവുന്ന കുറ്റമാണ്.
ലൈസന്‍സ് ലഭിച്ച ഉല്‍പ്പന്നങ്ങള്‍ അല്ലാതെ വ്യാജ ഉല്‍പ്പന്നങ്ങള്‍
ഉണ്ടാക്കി വിപണിയില്‍ എത്തിച്ചതിനു മിന്‍സ് ബ്രാന്റിങ്ങിനും
കേസെടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ജില്ലാ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും പിടിച്ചെടുത്ത
ഉല്‍പ്പന്നങ്ങള്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ പരിശോധനയ്ക്ക് അയക്കുമെന്നും തുടര്‍നടപടി
സ്വീകരിക്കുമെന്നും ഇത്തരം പരസ്യങ്ങളില്‍ ജനങ്ങള്‍ വഞ്ചിതരാകാതെ
നോക്കണമെന്നും ഡ്രഗ്‌സ് കണ്ട്രോളറുടെ ഓഫീസ് അറിയിച്ചു.

ഈ വിവരം അറിഞ്ഞിട്ടും വാര്‍ത്താ ചാനലുകള്‍ ഒന്നും ഇതുസംബന്ധിച്ച വാര്‍ത്ത
നല്‍കിയില്ല. ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിനു രൂപയുടെ പരസ്യമാണ് മൂന്നു ബ്രാന്‍ഡുകളും
മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കുന്നത്. നേരത്തെ ഈസ്‌റ്റേണ്‍ ഫാക്ടറിയില്‍ റെയ്ഡ്
നടത്തി മുളകുപൊടി നശിപ്പിച്ച വാര്‍ത്തയും മറ്റു മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍
മുക്കിയിരുന്നു. ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട കമ്പനികളുടെ പ്രതികരണം അറിയാന്‍ നിരവധി തവണ
ശ്രമിച്ചെങ്കിലും പ്രതികരണം ലഭിച്ചില്ല.
