The Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore, is the only figure in literary history that I know of who has the distinction of writing the lyrics for the national anthems of not one, but two countries (India and Bangladesh). He was, also, the first non-westerner to win the Nobel Prize in literature. He did so in 1913. He wrote this short poem:

"I slept and dreamt that life was Joy;
Then I awoke and realized
that life was Service.
And then I went to work - and, lo
and behold I discovered that
Service is Joy." Rabindranath Tagore

Die Arbeit der Basler Mission in den blauen Bergen/Nilgiri Hills

(Wo wir geboren und aufgewachsen sind)

Der Subkontinent Indien war das älteste und größte Missionsgebiet der Basler. Schon 1834 wurde die Arbeit in Britischen Südindien aufgenommen, zuerst im Bundesstadt Karnataka dann 1837 in Südmaharashtra und 1841 im Bundesstadt Kerala. Die Arbeit in den Nilgiris, den blauen Bergen, einen prächtigen Hochgebirge begann 1846 bei den Bergvölkern-Badagas. Die ersten Missionare unter diesen Bergvölkern waren Michael Bühler, Karl Mörike, Weigle, Friedrich Metz, Andreas Köhler und Johannes Layer.

Die alle haben in einfachen Wohnhäusern gewohnt. Erst nach 12 Jahren intensiver Tätigkeit von einem halben Dutzend Basler Missionare der erste Badaga war bereit Christ zu werden uns sich taufen zu lassen. Er hieß Haliah und bekam bei der Taufe den Namen Abraham.

Der Missionsboden unter den Badagas war hart und steinig. Damals gab es nur 23 Badagachristen in der Gemeinde. Der große Erfolg der Missionsarbeit war bei der Schularbeit und bei der ärztliche Versorgung. Die Basler Missionare die auf den Nilgiri Bergen gearbeitet haben, haben zwei schwere Sprachen gut gelernt und auf Kanareschisch und Badaga gepredigt. Die letzte ist im Grund ein Dialekt der Hauptsprache. Als Ökumenischer Mitarbeiter hier in Deutschland, ich kann mir gut vorstellen wie schwer eine neue Sprache zu lernen ist.

Die Reisehütte in den Dörfern, wo die Missionare übernachtet haben hat immer einen schlechten Zustand. Sie haben unter schweren Krankheiten gelitten und einige sind dort gestorben. Das Grab von Andreas Köhler liegt immer noch auf dem Friedhof in Ketti wo ich geboren bin.

Die Bergvölkern die meist zurück sind, haben immer wieder gesagt, dass sie keine Religion brauchen sie brauchen aber neue Schulen und ärztliche Hilfe.

Die Missionare haben ihr Bestes für den Badagas getan durch ärztliche Mission, schulischer Dienst, Verbesserung der Lebensverhältnisse und Predigen. Ich weiß das, weil ich auf den Bergen gewohnt habe.

Im Jahr 1947, schlossen sich die evangelischen Gemeinden, die aus der Arbeit der angelsächsischen Missionen erwachsen waren, zur Südindischer Kirche‚ „The Church of South India“. In dieser Unionskirche waren Anglikaner, Presbyterianer, Kongregationalisten und Methodisten vereint. Im Jahr 1958 schlossen sich dieser Kirche auch die Gemeinden der Basler Mission an.

Die Erinnerung der sinnvollen Missionsarbeit auf den blauen Bergen bei den Bergvölkern bleibt immer noch.

Damals es hat gebraucht 44 Tage nach Indien zu ankommen. Heute fliegt man nach Indien in 8 Stunden.

Ab 7. Juni ziehen wir nach Kotagiri um. Hier wird Tee ueberwiegend angebaut.
Wenn die Rhyfaelder naechstes Jahr im Februar zu uns kommen wuerden, da kann man hier in Kotagiri eine Teeprobe machen!
