It's time I made you love the south

I lived in Memphis, Tennessee for three years and I thought I should write at least one book set in Memphis or near Memphis. I chose Halls, TN. for Gravediggers partly because my husband has relatives there and partly because it is such a cool town.

I'm going to take you to most of the places my characters go to in the book and I hope you'll see why I chose this place to set this mystery. We're going to start with the places Billy and Henry go in Memphis.

Writers' Conferences-The Best Investment for Writers

The first writers' conference I ever attended was LDStorymakers, and it totally changed my life and opened up a world of what seemed to me to be the secrets of writing and publishing.

I get asked almost every time I do a signing or event by multiple people what I would suggest they do to become a better writer. Without hesitation, I tell them to attend writers' conferences. That is where serious learning takes place.

Not only do you learn a ton, but opportunities that you didn't know were available are suddenly popping up everywhere. What types of opportunities, you ask? I'll give you a small taste.

At that first conference I attended eight years ago, I met the senior editor of Putnam (at least I think it was Putnam). I was lucky enough to sit down with him after he'd read the first 10-15 pages of the first book I'd ever written. I had no idea what to expect and truthfully, knew nothing about editors and agents, or publishing for that matter. He really liked what I'd written and made one big suggestion-that start the story in a different place. In fact, he wanted me to send it to him once I'd made the changes. I took his advice and it was incredible what it did for my novel, Watched (which is free right now at all major online retailers-go snag it) Unfortunately, it took me FOREVER to finish the book and by the time I sent it to him, he'd retired. Meeting up with and pitching agents and editors is a huge benefit to anyone who wants to publish. Writers' conferences are one of the places to do that. The easiest in my opinion.

Only a few short years later, I met and pitched my agent: Michelle Wolfson. My claim to fame with her is that I'm the first client she's ever picked up from a conference. What conference? LDStorymakers. I just can't get enough of that conference. I always learn a ton and meet amazing people.

On the topic of people, I met tons of writers. What is the benefit of that? The second thing you should do if you want to become a serious writer is to find or create a critique group. How do you find writers to do this? Writers conferences. Almost everyone is carrying around bookmarks and business cards to hand out to people. Find writers who are at about the same skill level as you, or higher, and write in similar genres and then help each other on a regular basis with what each of you is writing. My first group started with about six people and everyone from that group, aside from one, who will be published-she's amazing, is published now.

The last perk I'm going to tell you about, and there are way more than three, is that you get access to tons of successful, published authors. Not only do you get to hear many teach, but you can approach them and ask questions about how they became a success and then emulate them. The best place to learn is always at the feet of the masters.

Welcome to the Summer Reads Scavenger Hunt!

5 Amazing Summer Reads..and my progress...

So, I posted I would be reading Hex Hall, The Goldfinch, Harry Potter Series, Perry Road, and Secret Servant this Summer.

So far, I've gotten to Hex Hall...the whole series. Loved it.

I've also read/listened to Airel, (just ok-I think the reader put me off a bit)

The Poisonwood Bible(so funny/jaw dropping and interesting)

Furies of Calderon, (great strong female roles and fun fantasy-totally nail biting the whole time)

I started Looking for Alaska and put it down-too much sex and crudeness)

Hot Shot (ok. but I'm not really a fan of pure romance like this)

Becoming a Legend-(the head hopping was so hard to follow)

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer- (loved this, but can't recommend it highly because of the terrible language in it.)

I had no time to listen to Secret Servant while in Canada-(I was too busy hiking and grilling and having a great time with old friends)

I started The Goldfinch...and I've been so tired at the end of every day, I've only gotten a few pages in a night before I'm totally asleep.

Perry Road-for the next 2 weeks I get to teach munchkins how to swim-so my pool time will be spent with them-then I will start Perry Road. Excited.

Harry Potter audio-It's going to happen...Yay

"My musician husband and I just randomly started talking about the idea of working on a project together - wouldn't it be great if we could collaborate and merge our two artistic worlds? Writing and Music? That was the seed that started the muse talking, and soon afterward The Minstrel Series was born!

For Heart & Soul, I knew I wanted to move the series from Germany to England (next to Ireland and Boston!) and that I needed a small coastal town not far from London. I used Google Earth to examine the British coastline to search for the perfect town and found it in Emsworth. Living in Germany part-time has its advantages and one of them is its proximity to England. My husband and I did a quick five day research trip. (It also came in handy for the next book, a Christmas novella set in London - stay tuned!)

Because of the musical aspect of this series, I'm always on the prowl for songs and singers. My connection to the singer-songwriter world via my musical husband has been a big advantage. My husband's musical genes have also been down to our kids, so it's exciting to involve my daughter Tasia in the project to be the singing voice of Gabriele."

This week I'm teaching a class and directing a table at Boot Camp at Storymakers writers' conference. (Thursday-Saturday) It's going to be better than chocolate cake. Seriously!

This is the conference that taught me how to be an author. I've been going for six years now and I still say it's the best writers' conference around.

I get asked all the time for advice about what aspiring authors should do to become a great writer and I always tell them to go to writers' conferences. It is the most effective way to learn the skills you need to become a successful author and you get to meet a ton of published and aspiring authors. You'll love it. Give it a try.

In the meantime, come see me at a mass signing at 4:15 this Saturday at the Davis Conference Center near Target in Layton. There will be hundreds of authors for you to meet. Can't get better than that.
