With Kodak having filed last-minute patent lawsuits against Apple and HTC as it was heading into bankruptcy last month, Bloomberg reports that Apple is looking to assert itself against the pioneering photography company with a new lawsuit alleging infringement of Apple-held patents.

While Apple says in its filing with the bankruptcy court overseeing Kodak's case that it is not required to seek approval for a lawsuit, Apple notes that it is requesting the court's blessing "out of an abundance of caution".
Apple Inc. asked a bankruptcy judge for permission to sue Eastman Kodak Co. over allegations it’s infringing patents that Apple says cover technologies used in printers, digital cameras and digital picture frames.

While arguing bankruptcy law doesn’t prevent the filing of infringement suits against a company in court protection, “Apple requests express authority from this court before it initiates the actions out of an abundance of caution,” the company’s lawyers wrote in the filing.
In a separate case, Apple has been contending that it is the rightful owner of a patent currently held by Kodak. Apple claims that through its partnership with Kodak to produce QuickTake digital cameras during the mid-1990s, Kodak misappropriated intellectual property involved in the project and patented it for itself.

Apple last month filed a petition with Kodak's bankruptcy court requesting that Kodak not be permitted to use the disputed patent to secure loans supporting the company's restructuring until ownership of the patent is resolved. The U.S. International Trade Commission has preliminarily rejected Apple's ownership claims, but the case and a parallel federal lawsuit remain pending.

Apple Activates Assistive Touch in iOS 5 Beta 3

In the latest iOS 5 beta just released today, Apple has activated the new "Assistive Touch" features for the iPad. The Assistive Touch settings were in place in iOS's accessibility settings in previous betas, but is only now active. The new features are meant to provide additional interactivity for those who might have trouble using the traditional gestures and buttons on the iPad.

The new settings allow users to activate a menu overlay on the iPad with by pressing on a designated corner. The menu allows one-tap access to all of the iPad's functions including rotation, shaking, volume changes and even gestures. Known gestures such as pinch and swipe can be recalled by a tap, and custom gestures can even be recorded and played back on command.

Mumbai’s largest Broadband service provider Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) today announced that it has Rationalized its Unlimited Broadband Plan portfolio and increased the Downloading Speed during night hours in four tariff plans in Mumbai circle.

Now MTNL’s Unlimited Broadband plan users under Plan-599, Plan-749, Plan-999 and Plan-1599 will get additional speed during night hours (10 pm to 8 am).

With the Free Speed Up-gradation, MTNL Broadband users under “Unlimited Combo Plan 599” will be eligible for the 752 Kbps, Plan-749, Plan-999 and Plan-1599 customers will get 1 Mbps, 1.344 Mbps and 1.792 Mbps the faster speed during the night hours (10 PM to 8 AM) at the existing rates respectively.

Modem / CPE Charges :

With the Rationalization of Unlimited Broadband Plan portfolio, MTNL also imposes monthly Modem/ CPE / Rent of Rs. 50/month for customers who have taken modem from MTNL. Earlier it was waiwed off for all Unlimited and Combo Plan subscribers. However No monthly CPE Rental for customers using their own modem.

MTNL is also offering additional 25 Monthly FREE Calls to all subscribers using Broadband combo-249 (25 free calls calls), Combo-500 (200 + 25 Free calls) and Combo-B plans (25 Free calls). With more of a whimper than a bang, Mumbai’s largest Broadband service provider Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) today announced that it has increased the Downloading Speed for its Unlimited Combo Plan-495 subscribers in Mumbai circle.

Now MTNL Broadband users under “Unlimited Combo Plan 495” will be eligible for the 512 Kbps, the faster speed during the night hours (10 PM to 8 AM) at the existing rates. Earlier the downloading speed was 320 Kbps (day and night).

MTNL also added 25 Free Local Calls with this combo plan. All new benefits will be available to existing and new subscriber from 1st June, 2011.

To rewards the existing Broadband Subscribers, MTNL brings the similar benefits of HAPPY HOURS UNLIMITED Broadband Plans (launched in 16th May, 2011) with the speed enhancement in its entry level plan.

APPLE iPAD 2 INDIA-NEXT WEEK

This comes as a surprise to all of us. Apple will launch the second generation iPad 2 in India at a price starting at Rs. 27,900 later this week. OnlyGizmos blog claims to have been tipped by a trusted source about this launch. It's surprising because hardly three months ago, Apple introduced the first generation iPad in India.

The second generation iPad 2 has a dual-core processor, dual-cameras, speaker mesh at the back, Gyroscopic sensor, accelerometer, and faster graphics. In a way, iPad 2 is a step up and refreshed version of iPad but nothing so phenomenally different. You can go through our iPad 2 preview.

Apple launched the iPad in India on January 28 and now the iPad 2 is expected to be launched on April 28. Within the span of 12 weeks, Apple slashed the price of iPad and now will introduce iPad 2 in India.

Bing for iPad

Though Microsoft and Apple are looked upon as rivals, Microsoft continues to roll out products on Apple's iOS and Mac OS X platforms. Now, Microsoft has released new Bing App for iPad which is available for free from Apple iOS App Store. Bing for iPad is claimed to have been developed from ground up for the interface. Decision engine based Bing search becomes more visual and 'immersive' as an app for the iPad. The new Bing for iPad app is available only for U.S. region for download (link) from Apple iOS App Store. This Bing for iPad will work on iPads with iOS 4.2 update or higher.

Microsoft certainly has dropped some hints of what its Windows 8 for tablets might look like. The Bing for iPad's home screen shows up with six dynamic tiles - Weather, News, Maps, Movies, Trends and Finance. These tiles have dynamic content being showed up as like a slideshow. This means you will find changes in content on News and Trends tiles every few minutes.

Implementation of swipe gestures will surely be endured by iPad users as it will let them browser through movie news articles, trending topics, movie listings, images and many other items. The Bing app also integrates Bing Local and Maps that will help users with directions, real-time tracking of roads and traffic with Road, Aerial and "Bird's Eye" Views adjustable in Maps.

Bing for iPad app layout appears to be very engaging and pleasing as if you are reading a magazine. Well, it also has Voice activated search powered by Tell Me and as anticipated, it is not accurate, maybe due to the difference in accent.

One of the interesting implementations in this app is the layout where you can swipe between Bing results and websites that appear like frames. All you have to do is swipe from left to right or vice versa.

Needless to say that Bing for iPad does give some competition to different Google apps for the iPad like the Search and Maps in native Maps app. Now, Google should also compile all its goodies and deliver it in form of an actual app rather than existing one that acts as a bookmark anchor for its services.

RIM's BlackBerry users in India are making the best of the BlackBerry Messenger despite the tussle between the company and the Indian government. You will be delighted to know that RIM is working on BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 version (BBM) and it has already been made available in several underground forums. Folks at CrackBerry have got their hands on a couple of BBM 6.0 screen shots that show that the updated Messenger looks really clean and slick.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 is expected to be available with the BlackBerry OS 6.1 update when RIM releases it. The new BBM 6.0 will have new icons and users will be able to assign colors to contacts as well as chat. So that means you can assign specific colors to specific contacts.

HTC DESIRE S INDIA

HTC has launched the Desire S Android smartphone in India. It is the updated version of the original HTC Desire, which is still on sale for Rs. 21,999. The Desire S, on the other hand, is priced at Rs. 25,490. Compared to the Desire, the Desire S has an updated version of the Snapdragon SoC with a faster GPU, more RAM and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
