HELLOWWWWWWWW !!!!!!!! LOL ! Yipee!

I'm back in circulation after what seemed to be an eternity for me :) I have pulled out this blog from the public domain for a time because I found it difficult to sustain 4 blogs, a website , a bachelor's degree AND family...humm, BUT I thought- what a waste, so I'll probably post here at least once a week just to keep it up and running. I am a true blooded blogger- whatever that means (chuckle...). Anyway, halfway through my course & I'm so looking forward to finishing...although I would terribly miss tech. It's grown on me, the habit of getting up early and sitting in class and absorbing all the lectures, nice.

Okay, I better rush off I've one more essay to pin down and that is it! hurrah!

"Words"

'Sticks & stones may hurt my bones but words can never hurt me'

Yup, I admit that I am quite skeptic about that age old saying, simply because I don't believe it. Perhaps, that quotation came out from a defensive point of view. Words, aren't they funny? people use them in all sorts of ways- to woo, to hurt, to heal, to destroy...
They are powerful tools indeed and I often remind my children- to not use certain words lightly or even in jest because they are like seeds. They take root and bear fruit and it's either good or bad. I think it's important to stir an awareness for something as ordinary as the use of words. I take it seriously, to me it isn't trivial- stereotyping, labelling people is not at all innocent.

Because unfortunately, not all people are sensitive to this truth and they are either ignorant of what they do or they know but just don't care. Words to them are just literally 'words'- you just have to er, well, swallow what they say even if it leaves a bitter aftertaste (chuckle...).
Reminds me of someone I know- she just lashes out at people and it really came to a point where her behaviour was quite damaging, words are like poison ! then again I thought- what made her like that? I realized she has this hidden anger inside. Still, it is not an excuse, she needs to sort it out I think.

All I'm saying is - some people are too dense to realize the effects of their words on others whilst some innocently succumb to freudian slips. There are people who are naturally tactless and they've picked up the habit of 'speaking before thinking'. I should know cause I lived with the whole Freudian gang for a good 11 years of my life (pfft !). I admit my tongue gets slippery every now and again, we all do I suppose, BUT I am doing better, much, much better.

I guess that is how political correctness evolved anyway (and like most other things has now gone overboard too), it's a sort of social control to minimise conflict...but that's another story. That is why I am totally against labelling, we have this habit of putting people in a box and making assumptions straightaway, it's sad I reckon. My ears perk up (including my blood pressure, he,he,he) whenever I hear people make asssumptions about so and so, convincing themselves and others that their opinion is truth.
Thing is, truth consists of the whole picture, and there are things we don't know about. We don't know it all, we possibly can't. I'd like to think the world would be a better place if we are gracious to one another and we can achieve this by setting a good example to those around us. Living out the virtues and values of life?

You'd probably agree with me when I say we need to practice what we preach. It's so worth a try :)

Just being Nursy!

Well, the past few weeks were interesting ones and I hope this week will again be. I got an rsvp invite to a COPD respiratory presentation and dinner function on wednesday at the elite Mills Reef Resto but I'm not sure I will be going...I may be the only student nurse there, that's why. It's an Ingelheim-Boerhinger (a pharma company) funded event for educators and health professionals and an rsvp too, I got handed a one of three exclusive invites by chance because as I was having tea in the staff lounge, the pharma rep. was there and we got engaged in a lively conversation about pharmacology. I guess she took a shine on me and voila- got the invite! (chuckle...) anyways, I was sorta' flattered and torn because firstly- it is an opportunity to make connections and to be able to hear experts talk about something relevant to what I actually am studying is ultra cool :) and not everyone get to go...but I guess not knowing anybody there is kind of scary too and well, yeah- a tad bit intimidating.

Hmm, what to do? hmm....yeah, well I'll make up my mind soon. I probably need to sleep on it tonight.

LAST WEEK:

I assisted in a vasectomy surgery & it was very interesting, not the anatomy bit (ha,ha,ha) but how men react to having it done, you know? the patient was all nervous about it, he kept chatting away whilst the surgeon, clamped and clicked away at the tubes that needs to be cut (did that came out right?). Hmm.

- Another patient who had psychiatric problems went in to have her arm stitched- because the afternoon before she cut her arm open with a razor, the 2nd time! (ouch!!!!!). So, she was bleeding all night? I asked her & she said yep, that she was starting to get dizzy (obviously, she lost a lot of blood...) and so she decided to come in and have it sorted. Ahuh, and the fresh 6 inch cut was alongside a week older 8 inch razor cut...man, her wound was stinking from the clotted and still bleeding wound. At the end of the stitching and I was left to clean and dress her wound, she handed me her pouch containing 3 razor blades with a smile and walked off (gulp). Nice.

- I have immunized babies, older people and a school staff, yey!

- Went on a 'prime call' sort of a 111...

what else? a lot went on for me last week and it was a great learning curve. Looking forward to another week.

Another day, another story:

Well, we travelled over to Rotorua to attend a so called workshop called 'Therapeutic touch' & it ended up being a Reiki session after all...hmp, what a waste of time and energy :( I should've stayed home. Needless to say, we were disappointed, we expected more. The whole seminar was more like a joke!

The speaker was from Colorado and for fairness sake, she was a nurse and she does have all those Ph D's under her belt but hmmm...I suggest she take a course on public speaking because most of us had our eyes shut halfway. I almost went to sleep ! I have to disturb a whole row of people as I got up to go to the loo, I needed to splash some cold water on my face lest I sleep through her talk (more of a chat, really) and snore the remaining time away (chuckle...).

She wrapped up the lecture of twenty minutes with a Q&A- and that was the best part because the questions, replies and comments ranged from the overly simplistic, as in common sense, to the outright absurd. It elicited reactions from me from a raised eyebrow, a smirk to a bellyache (as I was trying to supress an outburst of giggles!). Ho-hum.

There was one comment from the audience where a grunt escaped from my pursed lips & it took all my energy to keep it in & I pretended I was coughing (ha,ha,ha...LESSON: coughing is always a good strategy to cover up unwanted response)- a woman was sharing her Reiki experience and she talked about getting exhausted by it all and so she stopped doing it for fear of- in her own words & I quote "universal repercussions" !

What the !

So, I kept looking at my watch, am getting really fidgety by now because of all the nonsense going on and guess what? I decided to ask her a question myself...

I asked her- 'will the healing occur on a patient/person if they themselves doubt this kind of alternative therapy?' I asked that question to confirm my suspicion that Reiki is placebo more than anything...Her answer? I quote "If someone is against you, just pray for peace...pray for your enemies"

HUH? it's not April Fools day today was it?

Mad Christmas!

It's that time of the year again, aye folks? everyone is feeling the tension...waiting outside shopping malls in the wee hours of the morning, briskly rubbing their hands in excitement & anticipation of the - boxing day sale...yippee! they cheer.
Hmp. pathetic little turds. (chuckle...I'm one of them).
We are indeed a sad lot. Businesses have us at the palm of their hands, twirling our hyped up senses with colourful advertisements which make us salivate with anticipation for cheat sales. Well, they certainly are smart a&*^%s ! incorporating classical conditioning into their promotion? ha! that's wicked aye? and we unfailingly fall for it, year in and year out.
Yep, that's right- I felt cheated with our Boxing Day sales down under 'down under' (NZ you twit!) and yeah, I am once again frustrated at having to buy the dress I have been eyeing on for 2 months & only get $10 off of it. CHEAT ! grrrr.
Darn, I need a break. Excuse moi...

Hmmm, I feel calmer. Well, so how was my Christmas? it was great! the whole family was here at our place and we all had a great time. I cooked, baked, roasted- name it, I've done it (whew!), it was a feast, man. It was potluck but when you are the host of the party, there's always extra to take care of, especially the cleaning up...I was washing the dishes til 3 in the morning!
BUT all is well. I slept with a big smile, a rounded tummy (smirk!) and a smudge of chocolate pudding on my face (ha, ha, ha).

Anyway, hope youse' all had a wonderful time despite the madness of this season.

Just watched the BBC documentary EARTH & it was awesome. I really enjoyed it, it was breathtaking- all the beautiful animals and magnificent nature in all its glory.
It makes you realize that we are not the only 'important' ones living on this planet, we share it with other living creatures and when man becomes negligent of looking after the earth- they suffer with us. In fact, they suffer greatly...
Global warming is getting bigger and bigger an issue with the passing of time and it is quite alarming. Personally, it kinda' makes me want to go green all the way...do my small contribution to a greener planet. Guess, a little bit will go a long way, aye?

Anti Smacking in NZ

I used to be against the anti smacking bill which was made into law not too long ago here in NZ. It infuriated me how such a law could stifle every parent's right to discipline their own, and can go to jail for it too.
However I changed my mind. I am 100% for it now, after realising how important that could be for the children. Yeah, never mind the parents in this case- the kids are more valuable than our personal opinions.
NZ is now gaining reputation for having violence and abuse towards children. Everytime I read a newspaper, there is always something about child abuse and it's not amusing to read. It's the type of abuse that can only be described as disturbing and inhumane.

Again, now I've just read of a teenage mother who stabbed her 2 year old son in the stomach and then used a pillow to suffocate the poor child. Last year, one of the major scandals that rocked the country was when twin Maori babies were reportedly killed by their own dad and the family had done a cover up too. Nobody spoke to the press, they claimed it was cot death, etcetera...
I honestly wonder why? why the heck is this going on ? this kind of behaviour is abnormal and not acceptable ! and yet there is an evolving pattern that is turning into a phenomena. An ugly phenomena.

Baby Nia, poor baby Nia- I could hardly write this without my eyes watering but what her Mum, her partner including the brother & the father of the partner did to her was just terrible and heartbreaking. They were convicted, guilty and I wish they rot in jail. Yeah, without batting an eyelash I really hope they stay in jail for a long, long time.
The details of Nia's abuse is too gruesome for me to write, it creates an uncomfortable sadness inside. So, I decided to just give the link for anyone interested:

It's just one of the many stories told about her. The only consolation I feel now is that she is at peace in heaven with God and the gulity parties I hope will age in jail, without parole.

Apart from mocking about, pattering here & there in this blog of mine, I still have another addiction - watching films...I so love watching movies, especially Rialto films.
I've just been yesterday & watched this kiwi film and it was so good ! it is called "Show of Hands", based on a novel with the same name and it starred, of course, kiwi and hollywood actress Melanie Lynskey & Craig Hall.
It is a small town drama about a bankrupt caryard owner/manager who came up with a contest to try to save his business: he was giving away a Land Rover to whoever succeeds in holding onto the car the longest! ( unique plot eh? ), this went on for five days, even breaking the Guiness world record.

The story revolved on the participants. A surprise ending was in store too, excellent film. Got my moneys worth. Sigh! my story telling won't do it justice, all I know is that it was pretty engaging & heartwarming. Finito.

Yummm. I love my new template BUT am still playing with the code, so some of those sticky notes still aint functional....however i'll sort it out soon. I kind of want to put my personal touch on layouts see, just to make it a little bit more original, tweaking here & there. I'm quite pleased though with this one...
Anyway, got nothing much to say today, i just feel so exhausted after our 3 week stint doing our practicum, but I loved every minute of it :) My patient was gorgeous, i will never forget her. It was bittersweet when I was saying goodbye to her & she was crying (sigh...). Hmmm, the first of many.
Okay, gotta go, I'm having a terrible headache and my head is throbbing mad.

I am just sick of it. I am sick how women are being used as a bait to sell various products in the market, how we are 'packaged' by media as meat ! and not for being the women that we are- we have brains and not just bodies goodness sakes!

We are mothers who nurture our children, we are sisters, we are daughters, we are friends.

...AND women- well, we tolerate that image (sigh!). It infuriates me how our anatomy is used merely as sexual objects in todays world and we allow it, knowingly or not...just by the clothes that we wear and how we behave ourselves.

Hmmm, i know not all women share this opinion, I might even come across as a puritan & heck, maybe I am too- but I don't care how I am labeled. I stand for the truths that I know and it just sickens me how women are abused, raped, undermined and exploited because I know & you know that we deserve better.

Man, I am not a feminist but I sure understand where they're coming from...

I think it is time that women realize and stand for who we are and refuse all the rubbish sent our way.

Let's go back to being 'ladies' again, in the very sense of the word and let us be good examples to our children.

Nothing wrong with that, I guess.

I'm pretty sure I have enough tact in me to last me a lifetime because my Mum brought me up this way, but even that doesn't spare me from having my dumb moments- moments when I truly, honestly wish the ground would open up & swallow me whole!
There was this time at school when I saw a former classmate and I was so excited & I chatted with them and well, one of them used to be so slender & now she has gained weight- erm, enough weight that I assumed she was pregnant (gulp!). So, you can probably guess what happened next:
I put my hand over her tummy & asked her innocently, how many months is she on the way? and the curve of her smile straightened, her face turned red and she was speechless. I was too because it suddenly dawned on me that my stupid assumption was wrong ! ( darn it! ) Me and my big mouth!
Well, I said sorry and quickly turned round, picked up my pace & wished I could've rewinded the whole event & I would have put my foot in my mouth where it belongs! She didn't talk to me for awhile after that & I don't blame her at all. I felt bad though and I was really glad when she got over it and started to say 'hi' again to me. I learned my lesson: wieght gain is not equivalent to pregnancy & to keep my mouth shut at all times (chuckle...).

Another incident at another time with another friend:

Catching up with an old chum at a bookstore (where she worked) and she mentioned that she is going overseas, to Aussie and do her training there...and so after browsing awhile I said goodbye and told her "I'll meet up with you for coffee before you go over to Australia" and I was surprised when she ducked, turned red, and she came over to where I was and told me that her boss doesn't know yet about her plan to move and the woman beside her, was her boss!
See? another foot-in-my-mouth-moment. Great. I seem to have a knack for Freudian slips.

Hate it when stuff like that happens, unintentional but still...hmp.

Buy Local !

NZ has been fussing lately about encouraging people to buy local & for the right reasons as well. China had obviously taken world domination in the aspect of man power, everything I can lay my eyes on is made in China! from the branded & labelled down to the generic stuff...hmmm, whether it's a good thing or bad, I'm not entirely sure, however, quality control seems to be inexistent in that side of the world, dare I say. Perhaps no one would argue with me especially with all that bad news such as the melamine ingredient they mix in with NZ milk (tsk,tsk), how horrific indeed...especially when I found out, how my favourite White Rabbit lolly with that glorious melt in your mouth wrapper is actually melamine!
But that's just one example- it was discovered how clothes & fabrics made in that same country were treated with chloroform (usually used to embalm & preserve cadavers, ugh!), toys contained lead, luncheon meats were made from diseased pigs and so on & so forth...
I have to stop, cause it's making me feel queasy in the tummy, anyway-
Veges & fruit are now labelled with the country of origin which is interesting to see- ahh, this banana is from Ecuador, Dole pineapple from the Philippines etcetera...quite educational in fact (chuckle...).

Yeah, well, okay, I get it that we need to buy local to support the not-so-thriving local industry (I have yet to see an abundance of NZ made products), but that's the problem because local isn't competing well. Labour is expensive here, compared to overseas where businesses shell out half the cost of man power or even less...it's just practical. Makes sense especially for investors who'd do anything to cut costs & still incur significant profit.
Consumers in kiwiland are 'informed' consumers- that means we just don't buy stuff, we actually are conscious of what's in a product and whether it's a healthy option or not. ideally, products should keep up with being clean & green.

Still, for every country it is good to patronize your own, it's doing our bit- albeit a small contribution in supporting the local economy and I'm a 100% for that. If you aske me. well why not? local will always be fresher & for NZ- healthier! thanks to OSH & the commendable clean and green mentality of Kiwis.

Gen Y

My hubby & I were having breakie at Robert Harris this morning & whilst sipping my 'yummilicious' moccachino (chuckle...), an interesting article in a magazine caught my eye- it was about the Generation Y and all the flak they're getting for being so, erm, well, 'techie'... the point of argument are the pro's & con's of being a Gen Y baby. It was a well written article, i thought, because it showed how we are in fact, sometimes prejudiced in our assumptions. I must admit, despite my blogging ways, I am a conservative by heart & I' believe in balance. But anyway, that's another topic, so back to where we left off...

Although, the Y generation grew up amidst the hustle & bustle of new technology, 'old schooler's' think that they lack the creativity, socialisation & interaction skills older generations use to have- well, surprisingly current research reveals this to be untrue !
Gen Y were called the 'brainiacs' amongst all the generations: their Reaction Times (RT) are quicker than the rest of us & for obvious reasons too I guess & lemme' tell you- honestly, i find this to be quite comical because spending 24/7 texting & clicking on computer keyboards, ipods, Xbox'es & PS's ? i'd bet a million, that indeed it will hone anybody's reaction abilities (chuckle...).
Hmm, what else? the author, i blimmin' forgot his name- also mentioned how Gen Y's are exceptionally good in multi-tasking, and that they are a highly creative bunch, particularly in design & well, aesthetics.
BUT of course, cynics come into the scene (perhaps uninvited, ha,ha...) & ruin their party by saying that Gen Y's are reduced to nothing if you stripped them of all their techie gadgetry and thingamajigga's...adding, that well, they'll all end up blankly staring at walls with twitching eyes & fingers (chuckle...).

Oh no, is he describing me? (gasp!)...he,he,he.

Well, it was an informative article & i suppose, the world and its ways is just continually evolving, both for the better & the worse. All generations do, for that matter...and technology as we all know is a double edged sword. It's knowing who you are, that's imporatnt and not letting anybody put you in a box, packaged & labelled away, the way they want to, gen Y or not.

The Crown Fountain by JAUME PLENSA

Video sculpture & architecture by Spanish artist JAUME PLENSA. Incredible & ingenious, piece of work rolled into one. Erected in Millenium Park, Illinois, the structure is built of glass bricks, and black granite reflecting pool, the building displays slideshows of people's faces, and appears to 'squirt' water from the mouth...it's just cool. Really was amazed at the creativity of Plensa's artwork- a piece de' resistance, indeed.

Yes! i could relax and sleep well tonight after gruelling hours of studying...sat our A&P exam this morning and i've just handed in my essay today- whew. I feel so relieved. Anyway, because i'm getting good feedback from people who browse this page and everyone have good words to say- cheers, people !

I uphold my responsibility of fishing out the coolest stuff i could find in cyberspace for your enjoyment ( and mine, chuckle...). Oooppps ! did i just let the cat outta' the bag ! (scratch head)- Ok, folks-
yo' all caught me redhanded, my part time job is fishing, fishing pretty artworks and photos etcetera... I surf cyberland in search for things that really interest me and is worth blogging.

Kidding aside...

i started this fourth blog because i love art, i appreciate outstanding artists and when i discover nice ones, i post them here as part of my collection. Some of you had the impression that i created some of the artworks ( gulp! ) sorry to burst your bubble, but nope, i wish i did but like i've mentioned earlier, i just fish 'em out from cybersapce and those that really impress me, gets to land on this page...
I love art & if i have the chance to create, i definitely would plunge in...except for now, i am too pre occupied with doing my degree. So, i have to satisfy myself with being a blogger, bugger....
