Lindsay Lohan Spotted With A BlackBerry P’9981

2012-08-26T18:23:00.004+05:30

In a rare paparazzi photo shoot event when all of her clothes are on, Lindsay Lohan is seen holding a BlackBerry P'9981 device while frolicking around NYC. Just so you know, a BlackBerry Lohan spotting is a rarity. The last one we saw was back in 2009 is when she took some semi-nude pics of herself with her BlackBerry Bold 9000, which were then "leaked" out to the media.

My Bold 9930 will keep me company until BlackBerry 10 and here is why ...

2012-08-26T11:25:00.001+05:30

Lately the news likes to make it look like everyone is abandoning their BlackBerry and going to another platform, and recently I did just the opposite. I'll admit, for the past couple of months I have been on and off with my BlackBerry, sometimes heading to an Android device or an iPhone, but recently it has been all about me and my BlackBerry Bold 9930. So, what sparked the recent changes and rekindled my love of this device? Keep reading and I'll explain why BlackBerry works for me, and why I will use it as my main device until BlackBerry 10 hits.

From the moment I received my BlackBerry Bold 9930 in the mail from Verizon Wireless I loved the device, the hardware felt great, the keyboard was outstanding, and the touch screen worked like a charm. I spent a few months with it and then my curious mind started wandering, and those other devices I had laying around on the table began to look intriguing. As any tech lover with an itch would, I scratched and activated the other devices and thought that they were better than my BlackBerry.

The novelty of a "new" device and a different platform were enough to keep me content for a week or two, and then it the cycle would begin. I spent a lot of time analyzing my work flow, looking at how the devices impacted my productivity, responsiveness and how well they integrated into my day as a whole. This is what brought my Bold 9930 back to the front of the line each and every time.

Does the number of applications in a marketplace make a device better? Does a larger screen, 4G and the ability to load some custom ROM's on the fly make something more appealing? To some yes, but to me no.

So, what is it about the Bold 9930 that has won over my love for BlackBerry yet again? Let's start with the physical keys. Until you leave the physical keyboard, and device keys behind you will likely forever take them for granted. The ability to launch the camera with a quick press of a button from any screen is priceless, you don't have to go to the home screen, then find that pesky camera icon, and potentially miss the memory you are trying to capture.

While out of the box the Bold 9930 only has one convenience key instead of the normal two, all I had to do was load up SixTools and now I have 4 convenience keys instead of one. This means that with just one press of any of these buttons I can launch into one of my four most used applications with no struggle.

The keyboard. We all know how amazing BlackBerry keyboards are, and how well they assist us in keeping in touch with others, but personally I never valued it fully until I went to an all touch device and my replies began lacking. Where I would have previously replied with a lengthy description I found myself wanting to keep it short. When in the middle of something else I found myself ignoring messages instead of firing off a quick reply, just because I knew the typing experience wasn't as easy.

Ok, so buttons win over everything else? No, the buttons aren't the only thing that won me back. Application integration on BlackBerry devices is far deeper than it is on other platforms. The ability to add a picture to an existing email or to take a picture and post it or send it to the place of your preference makes life so much easier.

The argument about the number of applications available in App World is one that has never made sense to me. So just because Apple has more applications in the App Store that means that they are better? My use case on my Bold 9930 may just be extremely light, or some people may just be over thinking the need for applications, but I prefer to go with the latter.

Personally I don't see the need to fill my devices with tons of applications that I will never use beyond a first launch. There are a core group of applications that I need in order to function properly, and I have yet to have trouble finding a great application for my needs in BlackBerry App World.

From apps that set the weather forecast as my wallpaper, to applications that change the color of the LED so I know what type of notifications are awaiting me, my Bold 9930 is set up just the way *I* need it to be.

Are there things that I would change about the device? Things I would prefer that I can find in another platform. There sure are. I would like a bigger screen, I would prefer real time two way sync on email, and a slightly faster browser. For me these wants don't out-weigh the pro's that the device brings for me and my productivity, which is what makes the decision easy. While I anxiously await the arrival of BlackBerry 10 and some new hardware along with it, my Bold 9930 will be keeping me company.

Manage and track your medications with PillPad for the BlackBerry PlayBook

2012-08-26T11:03:00.001+05:30

Laid across my kitchen table is what my Mother calls her own personal pharmacy. Years of being a heart patient and Type 1 diabetic have left her with quite a collection which for many years was up to me to fill the container you see above each week, call in the refills, and pick up the prescriptions from the pharmacy.

If there's one thing I've learned when managing her medications the more there are, the harder it is to keep track and remember them. Her daily regimen includes five pill bottles, two insulin bottles, one box of insulin needles, and one set of prescription eye drops and each of them have different dosages, instructions, and frequencies.

This is especially true when they need adjustment, when providing a list to a new doctor, or when it involves taking more than once a day. PillPad by Alade designs for the BlackBerry PlayBook helps keep track of medications, refill your prescriptions, and provide quick medical reference information right at your fingertips.

4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook hits Canadian carriers for $350

2012-08-26T10:16:00.005+05:30

The ill-fated BlackBerry PlayBook recently got a new sibling in the form of the 4G LTE model that, apart from the data connectivity, also brought a faster 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

We reported back then that the tablet was supposed to go on sale in Canada sometime this month, and it has now hit retail. The 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook can now be purchased on Bell and Rogers in Canada for $350 and a three year contract. If you want to get it without a contract, TELUS will sell you one for $550. The 32GB variant is the only one on sale.

Now that is a lot of money for a tablet that seemingly no one wants and I’m not sure where RIM is going with this. Even though the tablet itself is pretty good, a price tag like that is a sure-fire way of alienating customers who are not really interested to begin with.

BlackBerry PlayBook 64GB (Wi-Fi) in the UK costs just £129 right now

2012-08-26T10:11:00.005+05:30

The BlackBerry PlayBook is on its way out – as far as 7” tablets are concerned, the Google Nexus 7 is getting all the attention, after it stole the spotlight from the Amazon Kindle Fire. But a good deal is a good deal – the 64GB version of the PlayBook is currently going for £129 in the UK.

For comparison, a Nexus 7 8GB costs £159, while the 16GB one is £199. Somewhat amusingly, a 16GB PlayBook is £129 or even £169 in some places.

Currently three stores offer the BlackBerry PlayBook 64GB Wi-Fi at £129 – Dixons, Currys and PC World(actually those three stores are part of the Dixons Stores Group).

Note that those stores offer the 16GB version at the same price and the 32GB at £20 more. You can view the full list of prices in different UK stores for the different versions over at the BlackBerry site.

Before you rush to buy one, you should note that this might be the worst time to buy a tablet, even one so cheap. Amazon is holding a press conference on September 6 and all rumors point to a Kindle Fire successor. Granted, the UK is still to get the original Fire, but the new one might get there quicker.

Not even a week later Apple is expected to hold an event for the iPhone 5, but many rumors also claim aniPad mini will attend the party.

And for mainland Europeans who have considered importing the PlayBook 64GB to get in on the deal, the Nexus 7 is expected to arrive in several European countries on September 3. The 16GB version will be priced €250, though it should be €237.40 in France.

Still, for the cheapest brand name 7” tablet, a BlackBerry PlayBook 64GB for £129 is hard to beat.

BlackBerry 10 'incompatible' with existing BES servers: report

2012-08-25T16:52:00.000+05:30

RIM is developing a new version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) for BlackBerry 10 devices because the existing offering is incompatible with the next-generation platform.

BlackBerry 10 devices are not compatible with current versions of BES. Credit: CNET.

According to a BGR report, it's why the Ontario, Canada-based firm's failed to include email and BlackBerry Messenger support at the launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook device -- because the QNX-based operating system couldn't communicate with RIM's existing server infrastructure.

According to the report, RIM will cease development on the current BES server, version 5.0.3, but will issue security patches for "well into the future," according to a RIM spokesperson. BES server version 5.0.4 will be compatible with BlackBerry 10 devices only.

The kicker? If you're running Java-based devices -- such as BlackBerry 7 devices or older -- and BlackBerry 10 devices that run the new QNX-based platform, your enterprise network will have to retain a legacy BES 5.0.3 server as well as a newer BES 5.0.4 server.

It's a move that could increase infrastructure costs in the long run because older BlackBerry versions will have to remain on the legacy BES server while newer devices will have to be hooked up to the newer BES version.

The new BlackBerry 10-compatible BES server, codenamed "NG" for 'next-generation,' will integrate Mobile Fusion and support for the BlackBerry PlayBook.

RIM currently has 78 million customers in total around the world that use the consumer driven BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS). Governments, businesses and enterprises -- a smaller proportion -- continue to use BES for secure communication and messaging, contacts and calendar synchronization, and other business uses.

BlackBerry 10 screen resolution got standardized by RIM

2012-08-25T11:29:00.001+05:30

RIM standardized the screen resolution for upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS running devices. The future smartphones running the OS will come in two resolutions: 1280 x 720 pixels for full touch devices, and 720 x 720 pixels for handsets with hardware QWERTY keyboards.

RIM took the abovementioned step after taking feedback from the BlackBerry developer community, whose members have complained about having to deal with a few screen resolutions too many in the past. The new standard set by RIM is bound to make their life easier moving forward.

With the BlackBerry developer alpha unit, as well as the upcoming first consumer handset sporting the slightly different (and uncommon) screen resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels, RIM has advised the people involved in creating applications to use two possible options. The first one involves utilizing the new OS resolution, while the second requires "letter boxing" the apps to 1280 x 720 pixels, thus leaving 24 pixels unused on each side of the display.
