ঢাকা, মে ১২ (বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকম)- ঢাকা শেয়ার বাজারে বুধবার অতীতের সব রেকর্ড ছাড়িয়ে দুই হাজার কোটি টাকার বেশি লেনদেন হয়েছে।

ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জে দিনশেষে মোট লেনদেন দাঁড়ায় দুই হাজার দুইশ' ৮২ কোটি টাকা।

এর দু'দিন আগে লেনদেন হয়েছিল এক হাজার আটশ' ৬৬ কোটি টাকা।

শেয়ারের অভিহিত মূল্য একশ' টাকার পরিবর্তে দশ টাকা নির্ধারণের সরকারি সিদ্ধান্তের ফলে ব্যাংক ও অন্যান্য আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠানের লেনদেন বেড়ে যায়।

এতে দীর্ঘ দিনের মূল্য হ্রাসের প্রবণতা ছেড়ে শেয়ার বাজার চাঙ্গা হয়ে ওঠে।

অধিকাংশ ব্যাংক ও আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠানের শেয়ারের বর্তমান অভিহিত মূল্য একশ' টাকা।

ব্যাংক ও আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠানের শেয়ার কিনতে বাজারে বিনিয়োগকারীদের আগ্রহ বৃদ্ধির কারণে এ উচ্চ লেনদেন হয়েছে বলে সংশ্লিষ্টদের অভিমত।

বুধবার সবচেয়ে বেশি শেয়ার লেনদেন হয়েছে ২০টি প্রতিষ্ঠানের। এর মধ্যে ১৩টিই ব্যাংক ও আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠান।

গ্রামীণফোনের শেয়ারের দাম বেড়েছে এক দশমিক ৩২ শতাংশ।

বুধবার ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জে ২৪৪টি কোম্পানির শেয়ার লেনদেন হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে দাম বেড়েছে ১২৪টির, কমেছে ১১৭টির। তিনটির দাম অপরিবর্তিত আছে।

সাধারণ মূল্যসূচক আগেরদিনের চেয়ে এক দশমিক ৪৫ শতাংশ বেড়েছে।

Dhaka Mar 24 (bdnews24.com)—Senior BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury has filed a case against former president Iajuddin Ahmed, ex-chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, former army chief Gen Moeen U Ahmed and others for allegedly attempting to poison prime minister Sheikh Hasina during her detention in special jail in 2007-08.
Advocate AKM Fakhrul Islam filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on behalf of the BNP leader on Wednesday.
Sheikh Hasina and six others have been named witnesses in the case.
The prime minister herself alleged in parliament, on Mar 11, that there was an attempt to murder her by "slow poisoning" during her detention in special jail on graft charges by the past caretaker government .
Chowdhury, an MP from Chittagong, said in his complaint: "Sheikh Hasina is the leader of parliament ... There were attempts on her life."
The BNP leader said the matter had "infuriated" him. "So I decided to file a case over the matter," he said in the case statement.
Other accused are general Masud Uddin Chowdhury, Maj Gen ATM Amin, Brig Gen Fazlul Haque Bari and inspector general of prisons Brig Gen Jakir Hossain.
The hearing is likely to be held in the court of metropolitan magistrate AKM Imdadaul Haque later in the day.

Sachin Tendulkar scored one-day international cricket’s first double century to set up a 153-run win and a series victory for India over South Africa on Wednesday.
   Tendulkar, who opens in one-dayers, smashed 200 not out off 147 balls to help India post 401-3 and take a winning 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
   South Africa were bowled out for 248 with AB de Villiers hitting a defiant 114 not out in the day-night match at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium.
   Tendulkar hit 25 fours and three sixes in a spectacular innings that combined power, timing and enthusiasm with stunning strokeplay.
   The 36-year-old batsman reached 200 with a single off Charl Langeveldt in the final over and the capacity crowd erupted in joy as Tendulkar looked skyward, kissed the crest of his helmet and raised his bat.
   India lost opener Virender Sehwag for nine to left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell but Tendulkar, who extended his record number of one-day centuries to 46, proceeded to put on 194 for the second wicket with Dinesh Karthik (79).
   Tendulkar reached his 100 with a single and moved to 150 with a four off Parnell as he took complete control of the attack after hitting a century in each of the two tests against South Africa in the drawn test series earlier this month.
   Tendulkar holds the record for most runs in tests (13,447) and ODIs (17,598) and most centuries in Tests (47) and ODIs.
   Tendulkar put on 81 for the third wicket with Yusuf Pathan (36) and 101 for the unbroken fourth with Mahendra Singh Dhoni who blasted 68 off 35 balls with seven fours and four sixes at the stadium, which has short boundary lines.

Beyond the fires in the hills

THE sad, indeed mind-boggling, incidents in the Hill Tracts are a fresh new call for an ethical and moral dimension to be brought into Bangladesh's politics. Beyond the fires that have destroyed homes, beyond the demands for a judicial inquiry into who did what in the hills, beyond a swift punishment of the guilty, there lies a wide expanse of territory we need to cover in our dealings with those who have been part of the land for centuries on end.
And it is altogether fitting that even as Bengalis observe yet one more anniversary of the 1952 struggle for language, they go into a better and deeper understanding of the concerns that have assailed the various cultural groups which have without question laid proper and justified claim to those parts of the country they and before them, their ancestors have considered home.
Let no unnecessary emotion or unbridled parochialism come into the picture. The simple truth is that back in 1972, as we moved toward adopting a constitution for ourselves, the political and social rights and history of the Chakmas, the Garos, the Marmas, indeed of every indigenous body of people in Bangladesh ought to have been enshrined in that document.
That they were not has been cause for grief for all of us. That we have vociferously condemned states which have treated people, their own as well as not their own, with disdain without any thought to how we have been treating non-Bengalis in the hills and elsewhere has not only had a tinge of supreme irony about it but has also been a source of huge embarrassment for us.
History has never been kind to some tribes and some civilisations. And the bigger difficulty has been the deliberate inability or reluctance of those who could have done better, who could have upheld the rights of indigenous groups and clans and tribes, to reassure these threatened people that their rights are safe in the territories they have inhabited since the earliest of their ancestors walked the earth.
Where the place of indigenous people in Bangladesh's political format is the matter, there is a simple fact that must today be recognised by the state and its operators. It is that these original inhabitants of the land must be brought into the overall scheme of things as part of an inclusive and liberal political society. To do that the majority population must ensure that the indigenous peoples are not run out of or marginalised in their own homes and villages, that they are not subjected any more to measures that in different forms and substance have already marred the quality of life and culture they have tried maintaining for centuries.
The Ayub Khan regime in pre-1971 Pakistan destroyed a goodly part of indigenous culture through the Kaptai dam in the early 1960s. And we in Bangladesh have not quite been able to inform these dispossessed people that they will be part of us, not through a denial of their heritage but by having that heritage enrich, in association with other traditions, the broad cultural matrix of the land. It is time to correct that wrong.
And we must do that through acknowledging, in unambiguous and unqualified manner, their place in Bangladesh as distinct and distinctive cultures co-existing with the broad Bengali culture. The concept of Bengali nationalism notwithstanding, it now becomes a matter of urgency that in addition to the nationalism question we accord to the indigenous peoples the rights and the recognition that were denied them in 1972. Much tragedy followed that denial. Much blood has flowed. That it needed a deal between the government and the leading lights of the Hill Tracts in 1997 for the conflict to subside, to end, speaks of the grievances of these threatened cultures and of the grief we as a nation have trudged through.
There must be constitutional guarantees of the right to education for indigenous children in their own languages. And that education must be made a component of the overall national curriculum. Beyond education, it should be for the state to ensure a preservation and promotion of indigenous culture through a sustained and on-going program of a guarantee of cultural diversity in Bangladesh.
And doing that will entail taking the recognised spokespersons of the indigenous peoples on board and giving them the authority they need to carry their ideas to fulfilment. Tokenism will not do. But informing the indigenous peoples that they are free to choose their own ways of life and live that life within the ambit of the broad Bangladesh state and without any threat of interference or intervention from extraneous forces will.
The fires in the hills must be doused swiftly. Those whose homes have been razed to the ground must have those homes rebuilt by the state. And those who have fuelled those fires, wherever they are and whoever they may be, must be tracked down fast if opprobrium is not to be hurled at us by the global community. For a nation, nothing can be more demeaning and more self-defeating than a failure to stand by those marginalised by circumstances of history.

More textile IPOs in sight

The stockmarket braces for initial public offerings from a number of textile and garment companies, which plan to expand business to have a greater pie of the global apparel market.
The people who are at the helm of these companies say they are going public to raise working capital to widen operations.
Envoy Textile, a unit of Envoy Group, is among the companies stepping into the stockmarket, as the Securities and Exchange Commission has already given a go-ahead to the company's move to raise capital.
"We'll float IPO of Tk 40 crore on Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges with a face value of Tk 10 next year. The group has already sold a portion of the shares under a private placement," said Abdus Salam Murshedy, managing director of the group.
Meantime, a unit of Purbani Group, a leading fabric maker, is also in the pipeline to offload shares of approximately Tk 30 crore.
The company is expected to step into the market by year-end, according to Abdul Hai Sarker, the group chairman. However, he added that his firm is now at a preparatory stage for listing on bourses.
“Expanding business operations and raising capital are our targets,” Sarker said.
Some days back, SQ Celsius, a unit of SQ Group, an apparel giant, announced a plan to offload shares to the tune of more than Tk 150 crore by year-end.
On settlement of the pre-IPO or private placement by June, the formal share trade will debut in September, said Ghulam Faruque, the group's chairman and managing director.
As per the expansion plan, an SQ Station will be set up at Bhaluka in Mymensingh district where everything required for operating production will be available under one roof. The company has already purchased land for the project.
The SQ boss also said an asset management firm is now conducting the company's asset valuation and credit rating will be completed soon.
SQ Celsius' present paid-up capital is more than Tk 50 crore, while the number of its workers is 7,000. The total number of workers of the entire group is 10,000.
At present, 26 companies in the textile sector are listed on Dhaka Stock Exchange. Of the total scrips in the sector, some under-perform due to delayed annual general meetings and lapses in awarding dividends to shareholders for years.

ডিজিটাল ফরম্যাটে যাচ্ছে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক

বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংককে ডিজিটাল কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকে রূপ দেয়ার জন্য পাঁচ বছরের একটি পরিকল্পনা হাতে নিয়েছে কর্তৃপক্ষ। জানা গেছে, কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংক পরিচালনার প্রতিটি স্তরেই প্রযুক্তিগত আধুনিকায়নের পরিকল্পনা নেয়া হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে আছে মনিটরি পলিসি ,তদারকি ব্যবস্থা, অভ্যন্তরীন ব্যবস্থাপনা। উল্লেখ্য, ইতোমধ্যেই চালু হয়েছে ই-কমার্স, ই-ব্যাংকিং সহ অটোমেটেড কিয়ারিং হাউজের ব্যবস্থা। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক সূত্রে এসব তথ্য জানা গেছে।

বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের গভর্ণর ডক্টর আতিউর রহমানের বরাতে জানা গেছে, বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক ডিজিটাল রূপে আসতে ৫ বছরের একটি পরিকল্পনা নেয়া হয়েছে। বিশ্ব মানের কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকে পরিণত করতে ব্যাংকের প্রযুক্তিগত দক্ষতা বাড়ানোর পাশাপাশি পরিকল্পনা বাস্তবায়নেও জোর দিতে হয়েছে।

জানা গেছে, বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংককে একটি কাগজের ব্যবহারবিহীন প্রতিষ্ঠানে পরিণত করার লক্ষ্যে বেশ কিছু পদক্ষেপও নেয়া হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে রয়েছে।

ই-কমার্স

বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকে প্রযুক্তির প্রচলনের প্রথম ধাপেই ই-কমার্স চালুর সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়া হয়েছে। এই ব্যবস্থা চালুর মধ্য দিয়ে অনলাইনেই অর্থের আদান-প্রদান ,প্রয়োজনীয় বিল পরিশোধ, আমদানি-রপ্তানি, ফান্ডের স্থানান্তর, অনলাইন ক্রেডিট কার্ড, স্থানীয় মুদ্রা সরবরাহের মতো জটিল কাজগুলো সহজেই নিমেষেই সমাধান সম্ভব।

ই-পেমেন্ট

ই-কমার্স ছাড়াও ব্যাংকের গ্রহণ করা প্রযুক্তির মধ্যে ই-পেমেন্ট বা নগদ অর্থের আদান-প্রদান অন্যতম। এখন এন্টি-মানিলন্ডারিং আইন সহ এই সংক্রান্ত অন্যান্য আইন মেনেই লেনদেন করা হচ্ছে। এখন দেশের অভ্যন্তরীন ব্যাংকগুলো নিজেদের মধ্যে অর্থের আদান প্রদান ও সরবরাহ হয়ে গেছে অনেক সহজ। এর ফলে ভবিষ্যতে ইলেকট্রনিক ফান্ড স্থানান্তর এর কাজটিও সহজেই করা সম্ভব হবে ।

রেমিটেন্স

সম্প্রতি চালু করা ‘ইনস্টলেশন অফ বাংলাদেশ অটোমেটেড কিয়ারিং হাউজ’ (বিএসিএইচ) বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের ইতিহাসে এক যুগান্তকারী ঘটনা বলেই দাবি করেছে ব্যাংক কর্তৃপক্ষ। এতে রেমিটেন্স চ্যানেল ও পেমেন্ট পদ্ধতিকে সহজ করা সম্ভব। এই পদ্ধতি ২০০৯ এর নভেম্বরে পরীক্ষামূলকভাবে চালু করা হয়। এই পদ্ধতিতে চেক দিয়ে ব্যাংক থেকে অর্থ তুলতে সরাসরি উপস্থিত হবার প্রয়োজন পড়ছে না। এতে চেকের তথ্য বাংলাদেশ অটোমেটেড চেক প্রসেসিং সিস্টেমে (বিএসিপিএস) একটি নিরাপদ সংযোগ পথ তৈরি করবে।

চেক

প্রচলিত নতুন চেকগুলোতে থাকছে ম্যাগনেটিক ইঙ্ক ক্যারেক্টার রিকগনিশন (এমআইসিআর) লাইন যা ব্যক্তির অ্যাকাউন্ট বিষয়ক সকল তথ্য ধারণ করে রাখতে পারবে। এই পদ্ধতিতে সময় সাশ্রয়ের পাশাপাশি বাড়বে নিশ্চয়তাও।

মোবাইল ব্যাংকিং

মোবাইল ফোন অপারেটরদের বরাতে জানা গেছে, সেল ফোন ব্যবহার করে ব্যাংকিং সেবা নিশ্চিত করেছে বাংলাদেশ ব্যংক। মোবাইল ব্যবহারকারী ব্যাংকগুলোর সঙ্গে চুক্তিকারী বিভিন্ন অপারেটরের সংযোগসহ মোবাইল সেট ব্যবহার করেই নিজস্ব অ্যাকাউন্টের তথ্য জানা সম্ভব হবে । এর মধ্যেই তিনটি কমার্শিয়াল ব্যাংক এই মোবাইল ব্যাংকিং চালু করেছে। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক দেশব্যাপী কৃষি ও এসএমই লোনের তদারকি ও খোঁজখবর রাখতে এই সেবা চালু করেছে।

সিআইবি

অনলাইন ক্রেডিট ইনফরমেশন ব্যুরো (সিআইবি) একটি প্রতিবেদনে জানিয়েছে, চলতি বছরে রিস্ক ম্যানেজমেন্ট নিয়ে একটি ডেটাবেজ তৈরি করা হবে এবং সেসব উপাত্ত বিভিন্ন ব্যাংকের কাজে লাগবে।

বিভিন্ন নেটওয়ার্ক স্থাপন

বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের ওয়েবসাইটের বরাতে জানা গেছে, কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংক পূনর্গঠন করার জন্য তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ প্রযুক্তি মিলিয়ে একটি বড় ধরনের পরিবর্তন আনা হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে আছে নেটওয়ার্কিং, ব্যাংকিং অ্যাপ্লিকেশন, এন্টারপ্রাইজ রিসোর্স প্ল্যানিং সলিউশন, এন্টারপ্রাইজ ডেটা ওয়্যারহাইজ ইত্যাদি ব্যবস্থাকে একটি নেটওয়ার্ক ব্যবস্থার মধ্যে আনা হয়েছে। এতে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক এর প্রধান অফিসের সব শাখা ও অন্যান্য নয়টি শাখার সব কম্পিউটার একটি নেটওয়ার্ক ব্যবস্থার মধ্যে আনা হয়েছে যার ফলে প্রায় ৩ হাজার কম্পিউটারকে একত্রে যুক্ত করা সম্ভব হয়েছে।

এন্টারপ্রাইজ রিসোর্সেস প্ল্যানিং

ইআরপি এর মাধ্যমে ডিজিটাল পদ্ধতিতে ই-প্রোকিউরমেন্ট, ক্যাশ ম্যানেজমেন্ট, অ্যাক্সেস কন্ট্রোলসহ সব পরিবর্তন করা যাবে। এমনকি ব্যাংকের নিয়োগ বিধিও ডিজিটাল পদ্ধতিতে রূপান্তর করা হচ্ছে।

এন্টারপ্রাইজ ডাটা ওয়্যারহাউজ

এটি একটি ইলেকট্রনিক ডেটা ব্যাংক তৈরি করে যা অর্থ বিষয়ক সব তথ্যের যোগান দেবে। এটি ব্যবহার করে ব্যাংকের নীতি বিশ্লেষণ করা যাবে।

ই-টেন্ডার

বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক ওয়েবভিত্তিক ই-টেন্ডারিং সিস্টেম চালু করছে। ফলে টেন্ডার ঘোষণা, শিডিউল বিতরণ, নিলামসহ সবকিছু অনলাইন কার্যক্রমের আওতায় আনা হচ্ছে।

অন্যান্য কার্যক্রম

বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক এর অধীনে থাকা অন্যান্য ব্যাংক ও অর্থনৈতিক সংস্থাগুলোর কার্যক্রমও তদারকি করছে। এছাড়াও সৌরশক্তি ব্যবহার করে গ্রিন ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং এর উৎসাহ ও বিভিন্ন সাহায্য দিচ্ছে।

ব্যাংকের গভর্ণর ডক্টর আতিউর রহমানের বরাতে জানা গেছে, ‘দ্রুত বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংককে কাগজের ব্যবহারহীন একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানে পরিণত করতে সব ধরনের যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা অনলাইন ভিত্তিক করা হবে। অর্থনৈতিক ক্ষেত্রে প্রবৃদ্ধি অর্জন করতে কৃষি ও এসএমই খাতে তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ খাতকে ব্যবহার করা হবে। এটিকে স্বয়ংক্রীয় করতে এর মধ্যেই নেয়া হয়েছে বিভিন্ন ব্যবস্থা’।

গভর্ণর এর বরাতে আরো জানা গেছে, তিনি জানিয়েছেন, ‘জাতীয় প্রবৃদ্ধির ফসল আমরা সুবিধাবঞ্চিত মানুষের কাছে পৌঁছে দিতে চাই’। আর সেই লক্ষ্যেই বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের নেয়া ডিজিটালকরণের প্রক্রিয়াকে ঐতিহাসিক একটি পদক্ষেপ বলেই জানিয়েছেন তিনি। আইসিটি ব্যবহার করে অর্থনৈতিক উন্নতি আনতে ব্যাংকের ডিজিটালকরণ জরুরী বলেই তিনি মনে করছেন । প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহার করে কৃষি ও এসএমই এর মতো ব্যবস্থাও সাধারণ মানুষের দোরগোড়ায় পৌঁছাতে বা নাগাল পেতে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক সাহায্য করছে বলে তিনি উল্লেখ করেছেন।

গভর্নর আরো জানিয়েছেন, বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের করা এক জরিপে দেখা গেছে প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহারকারী ব্যাংকগুলো ঝুঁকিমুক্ত ও লাভজনক হচ্ছে। তাই প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহার করে এটির তদারকি আরো বাড়ানো গেলেই অর্থনৈতিক ভিত্তিটি মজবুত হবে বলেই তিনি তার মত প্রকাশ করেছেন।

33 internet providers to roll out voice services in Bangladesh

The users connected to the internet through local internet service providers (ISPs) can now talk to each other and telecom subscribers, as the telecom regulator made a tariff directive to commercially launch IP telephony services.
Under the tariff plan, 33 licensees, known as internet protocol telephony service providers (IPTSPs), can now sell voice services.
Service providers can charge a maximum of Tk 0.20 a minute for domestic IPTSP to IPTSP calls and a maximum of Tk 2 for a call from IPTSP to any mobile or landline operator, in line with a Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) directive.
However, the minimum airtime charge for calls from IPTSP to any mobile or landline operator will not be below Tk 0.65 a minute, according to the BTRC.
For international outgoing calls, IPTSP will have to follow the rates for international calls, as issued earlier by BTRC.
However, the new tariff directive frustrates IP telephony licence holders, as such charges will not be financially viable. Different telecom operators are charging lower than the tariff set for IPTSP.
"If we offer IPTSP to IPTSP calls almost free of cost, it will help boost internet penetration," said Akhtaruzzaman Manju, president of Internet Service Providers Bangladesh.
In addition, other IP-based voice services to other operators will not be viable due to the uncompetitive tariff directive, he said. "It's not a very good proposition in terms of tariff."
It would have been better if the per minute charge was fixed between Tk 0.30 to Tk 0.60, said Manju.
The services are to be value-added services at low costs, it will gain popularity in some areas such as intra-company communication, he said.
IP telephony licence owners can provide PC (personal computer) to phone, phone to PC, phone to phone or any other use to subscribers, based on the IP telephony voice service.
From a technical point of view, experts said, the voice over internet protocol (VoIP) is set to open through legal channels as IP and VoIP technologies have nearly the same features.
BTRC last year made a guideline to award IP telephony licences exclusively to local ISPs. Customers now can talk by using their internet connection just after installing a modem for voice transmission.
Presently, more than five lakh internet users are connected through local ISPs. On the other hand, mobile operators claimed more than 40 lakh are connected via mobile internet. Bangladesh's internet penetration rate is only 4 percent.
Abdus Salam, managing director of Agni Systems Ltd, a IP telephony licensee, said: "We should not charge extra for voice as our customers already have to pay for an internet connection."
He said that people should be allowed to use the technology first.
"We hope it will soon become popular as it is affordable."

Dhaka, Feb 21 (bdnews24.com)—Bangladesh Chhatra League activists beat up a young girl and her companions on Dhaka University campus on Sunday as they were returning after placing flowers at the Central Shaheed Minar, witnesses said.

The attackers were reportedly BCL activists of Jasimuddin Hall, Bangabandhu Hall, SM Hall and Mohsin Hall, other students on the campus, who witnessed the incident, said.

They said two teenage girls and four boys were walking past the vice chancellor's residence on Fuller Road at around 3.30pm.

One of the Chhatra League activists, identified as 'Setu' of Jasimuddin Hall by a witness who was a student of the same hall, first approached one of the girls, and began teasing her when she would not speak to him.

The witness, not wishing to be identified for fear of repercussions, said Setu began pulling at the girl's urna, or scarf. The girl screamed out and her companions came to assist, along with other bystanders. The Chhatra League activists reportedly turned on them and began beating them.

Witnesses said other BCL activists came from nearby halls and joined in the attack on the group. Including the girl's companions, five people were injured, said another witness, a student of Mohsin Hall who was also reluctant to be named.

Dhaka University assistant proctor Amzad Ali told bdnews24.com: "A university student and a girl whom he knew had some argument on the campus. At one point there was a tussle between the girl's companions and the students."

BCL's Jasimuddin Hall unit president, Abdur Rahman Jibon, also said there was a "tussle" on the campus, but he blamed "outsiders" for the incident.

It was actually to teach the main opposition BNP a lesson that Dhaka's international airport was renamed, says the prime minister.

"They needed to be taught a lesson," Sheikh Hasina said on Friday, speaking at a programme to mark the 21st February, the International Mother Language Day, in a clear reference to her tit-for-tat move to strip the nation's top airport of Ziaur Rahman's name.

On Monday, the cabinet decided to rename the airport after the 14th century Muslim saint Hazrat Shahjalal.

Hasina was speaking at the recently renamed Bangabandhu International Convention Centre, the erstwhile Bangladesh China Friendship Convention Centre, and said that the BNP had also renamed the convention centre.

"They should have learned from history and seriously considered what might happen after they went out of power," she said, referring to the BNP which led an alliance government with Jamaat during 2001-2006.

"They had changed about 200 to 250 names during their tenure, but now that we are in power, only one or two seem to have become a major issue."

The BNP has already protested against renaming the international airport on Thursday.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina came down heavily on the opposition accusing them of sympathising with the murderers of her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding president of Bangladesh.

Without mentioning name, Hasina referred to Khaleda's claim that her birthday was on August 15, which happens to be the same day as Hasina's father and most members of the family were murdered. "Some people change their birthdays to August 15 to encourage murderers."

"One of the murderers was promoted in the foreign ministry during their regime even when their trial was in progress."

Hasina then referred to the opposition 'reaction' after the execution of five of those guilty of Bangabandhu's murder and said, "Having failed to save the murderers they remained silent after the executions."

"They are still quiet only in fear that it would not have popular support."

She said that such people could only plan attacks like those of Aug 21 and the murders.

On August 21 of 2004, a grenade attack on a rally of Awami League, then in the opposition, killed some 24 people including Ivy Rahman, the current president's wife.

Hasina said although there was a bumper production and stocks were sufficient, prices kept increasing because of the collusion and manipulation of certain quarters that were out to discredit the government.

Government decision to change Zia International Airport's name and remove the former President's name from most public buildings was small, mean and vindictive. Yes, we recall how Khaleda Zia's government changed the name of Bangabandhu Bridge (renamed Jamuna Bridge), Bangabandhu Conference Centre (renamed Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre) and even tried to do the same with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University till better sense prevailed. We also remember that after the assassination of Bangabandhu in August 1975 till the coming of power of Awami League in 1996, over 21 years a relentless and state supported effort was on to eliminate the country's founder's name from our history. That attempt totally failed. Why? Because political decisions cannot take away the place history grants a leader. History has a way of stamping its own judgments in the long run, that political machinations of the day try to change in the short run. And then, did we vote to change all that? Didn't our PM promise "Din Badaler Rajniti"?
Why are we being led towards a political confrontation which appeared eminently avoidable just the other day? Whose interest will such confrontation serve? Not Sheikh Hasina's government's.
