Best Plumping Lip Product Ever

Oh. My. Gosh.

Forgot about any plumping lip product you've ever tried, and believe me, I've tried several—Lip Fusion (love), Sexy MotherPucker (love), Lip Venom (just OK), etc. I may have loved some of those other brands, but I have now found my soulmate: Dr. Lip Bang's Lip Freak "The Strongest Buzzing Lip Balm in the Whole World." I promise you, this statement rings true.

Within 30 seconds of smoothing the Atomic Cherry (also available in Berry Sinister, Bubble Trouble, and Clockwerk Orange) flavor on my lips, I experienced the same vibrating sensation that Sexy MotherPucker produces—to the tenth power! The balm produces an intense yet not painful feeling that lets you know your lips will soon look as plumped as possible without getting a Restylane injection. You can wear it alone, but for a super saucy look I recommend applying it under your preferred gloss or lipstick.

I completely owe this product discovery to my treasured friend Emma (and she's treasured not just for helping me find this stuff). She picked it up at Harmons Grocery in Utah for only $7.99 (you can also buy it online at Dr. Lip Bang's site), and I plan to stockpile this genius product.

The lovely Megan Skye Dolle of Skye High Photography (give her FB page a like!) recently asked me to collaborate with her and create the makeup looks for two models at a boudoir photo shoot. The final product beyond impressed me, with Megan's work resulting in highly professional work that showcases the models' beauty and the makeup.

Megan shares my passion for connecting with and helping others through her work. "I am a photographer because I love beauty, I love building relationships, and I love creating and documenting memories for my clients. But I am also a photographer because I want to share the splendor, the struggles, the laughter, and the human experience that I have witnessed in my own life and in others. By doing this, I hope to spread compassion and ignite a sense of curiosity in everyone who encounters my works." Megan's work definitely shows evidence of her zest for life. Have I ever been so thankful for the weekend? Probably. But I feel extra thankful today. It was a hellacious week with a great deal of stress that didn't afford me a great deal of blogging inspiration. But that's all the negativity I'm allowing in this post. This Friday is my FRESH START and what better way to renew yourself than with the color white? Although some people find all-white to be a bit mental hospital-ish, I find wearing or decorating with all white quite refreshing and peaceful. Summer Sun Protection for Sensitive Skin

Ahoy mateys! I love summer. However, I don't love sunburns. We all need to protect our precious skin (and eyes...see yesterday's post on sunglasses) from the sun's damaging and harmful rays.

I won't lie—I've done my share of laying out/tanning in the summer. However, my vigilance with wearing sunglasses and slathering sunscreen repeatedly on my face, neck, and chest has paid off. I realized this last year when I compared the skin on these areas to my back, which definitely suffered sunscreen neglect in the past. The difference astounded me. Freckles and sunspots mottle my back, but my face, neck, and chest remain pristine (and baby soft) in comparison. Additionally, because I've protected the particularly delicate eye area with sunscreen AND UV-blocking shades (and used eye cream since I was a young teenager) I'm 33 and have absolutely ZERO crow's feet. Boom! Take that, wrinkles.

Today I'm sharing my favorite, most-trusted sun protection products. These are the ones I've purchased repeatedly and will use by the pool this summer. The great part is that they can be used anytime (skip the SPF at night, however, because your skin needs time to breathe) during the year. The even better part is that for us sensitive skin people, I guarantee these products won't irritate.

Purpose ($7.99 at Target) is the only moisturizer with SPF that I can use that doesn't make my skin get red, blotchy, and sting. The rest of the time I make sure that my moisturizer doesn't have any SPF, and I instead rely on the sun protection in my foundation. While you can use this at night, I recommend using a night-time treatment or moisturizer that doesn't contain SPF.

Shiseido UV Protective Liquid Foundation SPF 42 ($36.00 at Sephora or Nordstrom)This incredible came to my attention when I worked as a counter manager for Shiseido at Nordstrom. Honestly, once you use this, you might want to use it as a year-round foundation. Check out all the incredible reviews on Sephora.com Allow me to list just a few of the benefits:

1. SPF 42 (no additional sunscreen required!)

2. Water/oil/sweat resistant (it will NOT budge)

4. Beautiful medium to full coverage without feeling too thick

Shiseido Sun Protection Eye Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 34 ($32.50 at Sephora and Nordstrom) This gem of a product moisturizes and protects your eye area, without any irritation. Don't let the price dissuade you, because this tube will last you throughout the entire summer and beyond.

Natural Ice Medicated Lip Protectant/Sunscreen ($1.69 at Walgreens) Forgot Burt's Bees. Seriously. I bought this last year before a trip to Lake Powell, because my lips get burned the second they see the sun. I was in a rush and this was highly visible at the end of an aisle, so I grabbed it before checking out. I'm so grateful I bought this miracle in a tube! It protects my lips, but I also discovered that it eliminates flaking and chapping. When I apply it, my dry skin seems to melt away.

What to Wear Wednesday: Sunglasses for Summer

Generally, I buy less-expensive, trendy, "knock-off" sunglasses because then I can throw them in my beach bag, set them down on the concrete at the pool, etc., and it's not the end of the world if they get scratched or lost. Expensive, designer sunglasses have a definite allure to them, but 1. I don't want to drop $300 on sunglasses, and 2. I want to be able to enjoy my pool and beach time without worrying about keeping them in pristine condition.

I usually choose big sunglasses because I love that style, and they cover the delicate more of the delicate eye area. This has paid off (in addition to using eye cream religiously), because I have much fewer lines around my eyes than other women my age. I highly recommend stocking your beach bag with Shiseido's Sun Protection Eye Cream SPF 34 (my eyes are super sensitive but I can put this everywhere and there's no adverse effects such as stinging or redness).

Talk about it Tuesday: Trends that are just too Much

I definitely advocate stepping out of your comfort zone, particularly with beauty and fashion. What's the worst that could happen if you try a trend? You could find a new favorite item that ultimately becomes one of your style staples. Or, you could realize the error of your ways and viciously delete every Insta or Tweet with any evidence that you ever lacked judgement and reason.

Sometimes, however, certain trends enter the style-osphere that just do not work for me. Perhaps a certain fashionista can pull them off with panache, but I'll leave that to them. I am definitely not saying that the following items are not fashionable; they are just not for me. But, if you like them, I'm happy for you (said in a slightly biatchy tone, but honestly I really mean it!).

Wearing these would cause the following problems for me:

1. The most heinous muffin top in the history of mankind.

2. People running as if Godzilla had landed on the beach.

3. Me questioning my sanity.

You know when your parents said something to you like, "Why would you pay fer somethin' like that?" (In my mind it's in a deep southern drawl since I grew up in the South) Well, this is one time they were right! If you really want to try this trend, don't spend $199 (yes, I saw a pair of these for sale for that amount), just DIY. And please don't let me catch you wearing the tie dye atrocities in the middle. Those just look gross.

Experimenting with makeup can be a fun, liberating activity. But, expect some stares if you wear one of these styles off the runway. The only place appropriate to wear the cat eyeliner look is at one of those cafes where you can drink tea or dine with cats. Even then, I'm pretty sure the kitties will look at you with a "Seriously?" look on their visage.

Monday Morsels: Bikini Top Bonanza

It's the most wonderful time of the year (not)...swimsuit shopping! Unless you're tanned, taut, and toned, you echo my sentiments about this necessary evil...it's the work of the devil! Nonetheless, we all need to face our fears, get our bootays off the sofa, and start exercising and spray tanning (cue Missy Elliot with the lyrics changed to, "Get yo spray tan on!"). Once you've finally reached the point where you can attempt to leave your Vampirish lair and enter the light of day (you don't really want to spend summer cooped up inside do you?), check out my picks for cute summer suits. And yes, you are permitted to shop online, but remember that the try-on process must happen eventually. You can do it! We are all in this together!

How I Began Blogging and Tips for Getting Started

I wrote my first blog post in February of last year. I created two posts, then I slacked and didn't really get into the groove until November. At that point I finally wanted to be serious and went full speed ahead. Although I definitely still consider myself to be a new/beginning blogger, here are some tips for people just getting started or contemplating blogging!

Get Started Girl: I planned on getting started with blogging much sooner than I actually did. Yes, I let procrastination get the best of me. Perfectionism also held me back. I spent way too much time drooling over gorgeous blogs and worrying that mine wouldn't live up to the standard I wanted. However, no one can judge something that doesn't exist! Sure, there are blogs that practically scream their superiority, but guess what—they started at the exact same place you will. So, move past the intimidation factor and dive into the deep end. There are lots of other people out there swimming and they want to help you, not drown you!

Pick a Platform Princess: Although I bought a basic template for $15 (Designer Blogs...they have some really pretty designs), I customized everything on my own and added numerous personalized touches. I spent reading tutorials online, and I'm so glad I took the time to do this. Although I felt like throwing my computer through a window occasionally, I learned a great deal of invaluable information, and I felt a lot more ownership over my blog than if I had paid someone to do everything for me. However, this process consumed a great deal of time that I could have spent focusing on content and diving into the social media scene. I advise contemplating this part of the process and choosing wisely based upon your budget and availability. You can go for Blogger or Wordpress, but I highly recommend choosing Squarespace, where I will soon transfer my blog. Watch the Squarespace tutorial video, and I'll be shocked if you don't choose this platform.

Determine your Design Darling: This is the one area where I recommend procrastinating. Choose your blog design/scheme wisely. There are so many to choose from, and believe me, it gets overwhelming narrowing down the options. Regardless of which direction you go, there will inevitably be a blog you discover later that you think you like better than your own. I call this psychosis blog envy. But don't let it get to you. Here are the steps I recommend to happily date and marry a beautiful blog design, and to ensure a long, lasting, fulfilling relationship:

1. Evaluate/study numerous blog designs and keep a running list with what you like
about each one.

2. While researching other blogs, keep in mind your content and whether a
particular design will work for that niche. While you may like the design of a
particular photography blog, the same layout might not work if you plan to blog
strictly about cooking.

3. Take on the viewpoint of your readers as you study each blog. Go beyond
whether you find the design pretty. Will your followers find it appealing and easy
to navigate?

4. Ask yourself if the design is conducive to social media. One of my biggest pet
peeves is finding a great blog, but then no matter how hard you look, the social
media buttons are nowhere to be found.

5. Determine whether the design will meet all your blogging plans. How many
columns will best suit your needs? Will you have sponsors or use ads to monetize
your blog? If you plan to incorporate large photos, will that work with the design
you're considering?

Brand Yourself Baby: This type of branding doesn't involve burning yourself, but the process requires a great deal of effort. Check out Lisa Quast's article Branding 101 in Forbes to learn more about the intricacies of this process. Her definition of branding: "The overall goal with branding is to differentiate yourself (the product) in the market so you can attain your objectives, be those landing your dream job or becoming a famous singer. The process includes defining your brand and brand attributes, positioning your brand in a different way than your competitors and then managing all aspects of your personal brand." Easy breezy, right?! Just kidding. You need to know what you want and go after it. That isn't the easiest for some people, but if you have veins filled fire and enthusiasm, you, lovely lady, are on the right track. Note: See "Get on the Scene Sexy" below for an additional word on branding and social media.

Land a Logo Lovely: Branding yourself includes getting an incredible logo. The saying "A picture is worth a thousand words" absolutely applies in this situation. Jamie Herzlich, in an article for Newsday, quoted Andrew Bogucki, a partner and executive creative director at a brand consultancy in Manhattan named CoreBrand: "In a lot of cases, the logo is the first identifier someone sees in an organization. It might be the only visual they see." How do you know if you've chosen the right graphic designer? I landed an incredible one, Amber Asay, who led me through the design process seamlessly and painlessly. In fact, she made it fun. She created so many incredible mockups that choosing from all of them proved quite difficult. They were all spectacular. Similar to the blog design process, find a few logos you love, then examine the designer's body of work. Proceed cautiously, and definitely don't say yes to something that doesn't feel right for you.

Get on the Scene Sexy: Some people will tell you to go social media crazy: "Start tweeting! Get a Facebook page! Update your Instagram! Have you pinned today? You are on Google Plus right?" I am a huge social media advocate, but I advise you to proceed with the attitude of "think before you speak." Once you step into the social media arena, you need to ensure that everyone sees you from the same angle. Your Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc. all need a great deal of cohesion. By staying seamless, people will get to know your brand better and trust. Check out the article 19 Things Successful People Do on Social Media via Forbes. Here's my take on how you can have a successful start with social media:

1. Profile Photo: I've been a blonde and a brunette, but I keep the same profile
photo regardless of the platform. If I have a blonde picture on one and a brunette
on another, people will get confused. Having the same photo enables the people
you interact with to get to know you better and remember you.
2. You ain't no follow back girl? Uh-oh!: Everyone wants "follow love," but unless
you're Jay-Z then you don't have the clout to only have followers but not follow
back. When I find a great Pinterest account, I generally click "Follow All"
(otherwise it doesn't count as a follow), unless the person has thousands of
followers and only 12 people they follow. Yes, I'm on Pinterest for great ideas, but
I'm also looking to connect with those who have similar interests.
3. Follow the golden rule: Imagine the exhilarating feeling of getting retweeted
by someone with 1000s of followers... Guess what: It ain't gonna happen unless you
share the love! If you want people to reach out to you, like your Instagram photos,
and give you Facebook "likes," you need to be willing to give the same in return.
4. You for real?: I swipe "delete" when I get a generic "Thanks for the follow!"
automated direct message from someone on Twitter. It's meaningless. If you want
to make a true connection, check out that person's blog or tweets and say
something real.
5. She's no you: Confidence is always in style, and so is being unique. I definitely
believe in having mentors or following in the steps of other successful individuals.
However, there's no need to be a copycat. The reason why we like others is
because there's something special about them that sets them apart.

Connect like Cray Cray Cutie: Reaching out to others beyond the social media arena says a lot about you. When I began joining Facebook support groups (for blogging, not an addiction), linkups, and giveaways as a host, I started meeting some amazing women. Connecting with other bloggers gives you support, energy, and opens up an entirely new world of opportunities.

Deem Yourself Dependable Diva: Truthfully, for me, this is still one of the most difficult aspects about blogging. I've already missed two days this week! There are days I'm overly emotional (a.k.a. PMS), sick, or tired as all get out, and I just plain don't feel like rolling out super creative content that will wow my readers. While we are all allowed a day off, with blogging, you must be generally consistent. Visiting a blog you like only to discover their most recent post happened weeks ago feels super disappointing. Don't let this happen to you readers. Plan ahead! Create a content calendar, write blog posts ahead of time, then schedule the posts. That way you avoid scrambling at the last minute, which can also result in sloppiness and mistakes. No bueno!

Remember when Clueless came out and we all drooled over Cher's virtual closet capabilities? I still don't have anything quite like that, but guess what: the next best thing is available for free through (where else?) the iTunes store! OK, so perhaps my title for today's post was slightly deceptive. But now that I've lured you in, keep reading, because this app is Candy Crush for fashionistas. You'll be obsessed in a heartbeat. Did you see the Brooklyn Nine Nine Kwazy Kupcakes episode? Yes, that will soon be you my friend, sneakily hiding out in the bathroom or deceptively pulling out your phone in meetings.

Now, let me introduce you to your latest addiction!

Basic Concept: Shopping. And more shopping. Yes!!! (cue evil laugh) The name of the app really says it all. When you first join the app, you get a basic tutorial and an initial budget of $4000 to help you get started. Spend wisely, my friends. Initially, I was a bit hasty and just began buying pretty random items. Little did I know that each "contest" has specific requirements, and if you don't have enough funds to buy what you need, you can't enter the contest. Then, you'll spiral into a deep depression until another contest emerges.

Contests/Prizes: Each day you get a chance to score an easy $500 with the "Daily $500." If your look gets enough votes (enough to increase your score to a 4-star rating), you win the designated prize for that event, which fills it with yet another goody that you can wear in other contests. Additionally, you can enter other "Limited Time Events" such as "Flashback," "Style Master," and various outfit-specific contests. For each one you enter you automatically get $100 and a chance to win a prize. There's also the separate Jet Set Events category, where you enter destination-themed contests that earn you travel points (those give you access to the next destination) and diamonds. You can only acquire past-season items with diamonds, not cash, and some events are limited to wearing items from a specific season.

Hair/Skin/Makeup: For each contest you enter, you can choose from a variety of hairstyles, skin tones, and makeup looks. There are definitely not as many options here as with clothing, shoes, and accessories. More looks become available as your closet value increases, which gives you even more incentive to spend. It would be a brilliant idea for the app's creators to incorporate specific cosmetic brands and perhaps hair creations from well-known stylists. Hopefully they read this and listen!

Designers: One of the really great features about this app, and a genius marketing strategy, is that your clothes are real items from actual designers. There's even a tab where you can shop in "real life" for the item in your virtual closet. Designers with items featured in this app include Rachel Zoe, Rebecca Minkoff, United Nude, BCBG Max Azria, House of Harlow, me TOO, Nanette Lepore, France Luxe, J Brand, Cynthia Rowley, and Hudson.

Caveats: Once you get started, you won't want to stop. However, once you run out of cash or diamonds, your only option is to spend actual money to get more virtual dinero. If one of your Facebook friends joins, you get $1000, and there are a few options such as participating in surveys or getting insurance quotes that will deposit funds into your account. While many contests include items you'll likely already have in your closet, there are others with obscure and often pricey requirements (a particular brand, fabric, pattern, and shape).
