The process of bonsai creation, rather than the end product is essentially an art in itself. It is true that a great deal of patience is required, but growing a bonsai plant from seed and caring for it over many years brings a great deal of satisfaction and a remarkable sense of achievement.

How you sow the seeds is the first technique you must master with this process. The seeds should be obtained from a reputable seed man or, even better, collected from the trees when they are ripe.... Acacias, Elms, Stinkwoods, and Maples are good examples. Those seeds with a fleshy coating (such as the Cotoneaster and Ligustrims) should be cleaned and dried first before sowing. At the end of fall is a good time to do this as it will ensure the seeds are fully developed.

Planting tree seeds in winter is obviously nature's way and plan, so it is recommended that seeds be stratified by placing them in the refrigerator for several days. Stratification is the process of alternate thawing and freezing that occurs in nature and that eventually breaks the dormancy of the seed. Maples will actually germinate if placed on the top shelf of a refrigerator, the not-so-cold spot! A number of tree seeds have hard protective coats, which make them difficult to germinate. If you are working with these types of seeds, they need to be soaked in water and placed in a plastic bag in the refrigerator to stratify.

When ready to plant, place a good seed sowing medium, something like an equal mix of part peat and part sand, in shallow seed flat trays. Arranging the seeds is not that important at this point because they will be transplanted into individual pots soon after they have germinated. In planting, arrange the seeds in groups or 'families' with spaces in between. This will give the impression of fields or meadows. Each family must have a dominate tree. The overall design is important in that it must conform again to a dominate group with each group slightly smaller.

Place the trays out in an unheated greenhouse enclosure over the winter or alternatively leave the trays outdoors, covered with a pane of glass. In the spring, the seeds should germinate. Germination is only the first step of the very long process of bonsai creation. The seedling still have to be carefully nurtured until big and strong enough to be shaped by wiring and pruning.

When the trees have reached the required height (not more than one and a half of the length of the container), remove about one-third of the bottom branches and also remove any branches that are growing inwards. Shape each group as a single mini bonsai tree seedling or, if the scene is thickly planted, treat the whole group as a single unit.

Now you are ready to make your first planting. This is really a simple and very natural way to create effective bonsai seedling group planting. It will do away with that contrived look. Place five to ten seedlings in the palm of the hand with a little soil. Squeeze very gently together, then plant as a family. The result is always natural. With this way you can arrange or design your scene with much more ease. It's good fun. Try it!
But sometimes we have difficulty selecting which one is the best for our household theme. Sometimes friends can give perfect suggestions on how we can make our home look gorgeous. And it would be an unbiased advice if it comes from a person who does not live in your house. There are also tips online and these tips really helped me a lot. I have tried to compare ideas with so many people and I have come up with something different myself.

Flower box is a unique gardening idea that mostly urban residents are enjoying. It is not the typical bed garden that is structured on your backyard. These boxes can be installed on your window sills, indoor gardens and patios. Just a couple of bountiful flowering plant and the appropriate soil can give you a pleasant gardening box. Some flower shops have come up selling ready made flower boxes that go with installation instructions. We just have to follow the instructions on how to install it on our windows or garden spaces at home.

Hanging baskets are actually a classic gardening method. But garden enthusiasts tried to develop and created some pots with hanging options. Somehow they did a great job of giving us choice on how are we going to use our gardening resources. This method is the easiest for me because we only need one pot or basket to maintain. Unlike the traditional garden that we have, it is like yards of plants to handle every gardening activity. Another good thing about hanging baskets is our option to transfer pot anywhere we want and we can make garden arrangements anytime of the day.

Planter box is another garden structure that most modern homes use. It can be like a big box of wood or hard plastic that we can place on our patios and house lobbies. It can also be stunning indoors like in our living rooms and dining areas. Bigger plants fit well on this. Some try Bonsai trees to go with the planters. There is a planter box type that is really a hit in modern home development. It is the illuminated planter box. Best feature of this box is the light bright atmosphere that it brings during night time or on dark rooms or areas of the house. Another thing about this wonderful creation is the selection of different colors that fit the occasion and the concept of our homes.

The above three gardening ideas are my favorites. I hope you have one favorite gardening method too. I sure want to hear or read about it. Would you mind sharing it now?

Ernest Penuela specializes in Dried Wreath and residential planters such as pvc planters and provides expert tips and ideas about indoor gardening. The advantage of having such garden perhaps is that you can view everything in it. However, it has some disadvantages as well, the two more prominent are: in case the slope is steep enough, the house appears to be dark, and the second disadvantage can be of drainage as the water accumulates at the bottom near the house and may cause dampness problem. But the slope in these designs is not that steep, so you need not to take too much account of these disadvantages. The shaped paving should have sloped away from the house and there must be a form of drainage at the foot of the steps. The circular area of the paving can be done in different types and shapes. The area other than circle could be shady and in winter it may become slippery as well with natural stone or smooth paving. The climbing plants on either of the corners will help to take off the bareness of the area.

The height of the retaining walls (that is of brick or stone) should be maintained all around. The ground height near the steps will manage the height of the retaining walls. Some backfilling with soil may be needed. Make sure that the plants on the top of the walls are not too high to obstruct the view.

A low retaining wall is used to level the area for the seat and pergola. Similarly, on an opposite corner, the small shed or summerhouse is treated in the very same way. The slope between the two borders should be from rear fence to down to the lawn and the lawn itself will slope down towards the steps. The structure used as a pergola needs to be of some heavy material so that it will support some climbing plants, such as a honeysuckle and clematis. If you prefer to enjoy the sun, you can opt out the pergola.

As there is no room for shrubby plants, climbing plants are used to screen all the fences. To avoid any damage to the plants, the pergola timber used should be pressure treated and stained. There are different shapes of pergola that you can use, such as octagonal or hexagonal. But fore such designs, you need to adjust the seat under a pergola further back into the shade to have a comfortable sitting place. These designs are not suitable for people who enjoy the sun a lot.

If you are designing a hobby garden for a family, then there are certain modifications you can make in your garden accordingly. You can use a high quality fine lawn grasses. You can replace pergola and seat with greenhouse. And instead of shrubs, you can grow high amount of herbaceous and annual flowers in your garden. In case of alkaline soil, tubs and pots of acidic compost can be used to grow ericaceous plants, such as rhododendrons, camellias, pieris and azaleas and many more.

You might also want to learn about Big Ideas for Small Gardens
Design a Small Garden and also Design a Small Garden.

It has a small patio area, which is small enough to accommodate sun-loungers or chairs. Natural stone is used mostly in a paving with random rectangular or crazy paving style. This natural stone is more likely the color of rockery stone, i.e. if the rockery stone is gray then the modern gray sets made of natural stone or from concrete might be laid in a square or rectangular pattern. It is quite odd to use plain square or rectangular concrete slabs in the hobby garden. Rocks used will form the topmost of the terrace and holding back much of the soil. For hobby garden, use walls on each side of the neighbors' boundaries and at the top of the garden. At the top of the garden you can use stone and for the places that are not much visible, you can use concrete blocks. It is seen that large pieces are more useful than small pieces and make sure that all the lines of weakness in rocks (strata) face the same direction.

You Grow Girl:The Groundbreaking Guide to Gardening

To give realist effect to your hobby garden, the rocks should go right down to the water surface in the pond. To give more practical look to your garden, you can use reinforced concrete or molded fiberglass rather than a flexible liner such as butyl rubber. Using a cascade in the garden will improve the looks of your garden.

Stone steps will join the two terraces and the color of the paving stones should be the same like everything else. Sidewalls are covered by mixture of shrubs and climbers, whereas the clusters of rocks keep the informal theme alive at the two opposite corners. Remember, you need to have a gradual change from pure chunks of rocks to walling stone, as a result the wall emerging from the rocky outcrop, gives an attractive look.

On the corners and edges of the garden you can use small specimen trees such as Japanese maple, medium sized conifers, weeping cheery and weeping birch. Keeping the central area of the small garden free from tall plants is a good idea. The small lawn usually serves the purpose of connecting the shed and the top step. Usually stepping-stones are used for this junction, but there are other ways like using a mixture of grass and chamomile or grass and alpine bulbs. The planting is made so that it screens the fences and the shed. For limited space, you can use shrubs like pyracantha and garrya. They are handy at limited space because you can trim these shrubs so that to fit them in size and shape according to the space available. For covering the shed, Vitis coignetiae or Polygonum baldschuanicum are really helpful.

You might want to learn about Design Your Dream Garden and also Design a Small Hobby Garden.

Newton

Orchids are a favorite house plant around the world and are becoming more popular every day. Their popularity is a result of the numerous variety of species to choose from and the fact that they are relatively easy to grow, once you educate yourself on their needs. With proper watering, lighting and feeding, orchids will flourish in most climates.

One of the popular and easiest-to-grow orchids is the Phalaenopsis orchid, primarily because it adapts well to both a home and office environment. The sprays of the Phalaenopsis remain in bloom for over two months from the time the first bud opens. This is not the case with all species of orchids; flowers of the Cattleyas orchid only last for up to one month. The frequency of blooming also varies among orchid species. Some will bloom once a year, while other orchid species bloom several times a year. A few orchid species bloom continuously throughout the year.

The wonderful fragrance of orchids is another reason they are so popular among gardening enthusiasts.

The strength of scents of the different orchid species vary considerably. Some plants have a very mild scent, while others are extremely strong. The fragrance range from flowery to fruity. Some orchids even have familiar aromas such as citrus, raspberry, and chocolate!

Although orchids are not difficult to grow, they do have specific requirements that need to be met for each plant to grow to its fullest potential. Orchids should be planted in bark or New Zealand sphagnum moss, not typical potting soil. Also, they should be grown in pots with good drainage, and watered on average once or twice per week. Watering can vary depending on the season; in the summer, orchids may need to be watered more frequently. In general, the hotter the climate the more water an orchid will require. If New Zealand sphagnum moss is used for planting orchids, watering can be done less often.

Orchids prefer a great deal of light that is low in intensity.

For example, many species prefer sitting in a window facing east. Orchids can be grown in both sun and shade, as long as the sun exposure is not too strong. It's easy to tell if your orchid is getting too much sun - it's leaves will begin to yellow. If this occurs, place your plant in the shade for a longer period of time, lessening it's exposure to direct sunlight. Yellowing of orchid leaves can also be a result of insufficient feeding; orchid plants need to be fertilized on a regular basis about every other week. Watering orchids with a diluted nutrient solution will also help feed your orchid.

The thought of growing orchids may seem very challenging even thought the fact of the matter is growing orchids is a simple yet easy task to complete. Now your probably thinking I must be crazy, growing orchids is very difficult. No, it really is not. The problem is that people are not taught proper orchid care therefore they are unable to grow orchids and then they eventually quit altogether. But you don't want to do that because when you discover how simple it is growing orchids indoors you will keep growing them for many years to come.

Tip #1 Using the Proper Orchid Medium

If you are planning to grow orchids indoors you may need to have some orchid soil or medium to place inside of your orchid pots. These pots will hold your orchid as well as the soil that will give your plant the proper nutrients as well. So what type of orchid medium should you purchase? Well, there are different kinds of soils that can be used to grow these beautiful flowers. There are organic and inorganic materials that are the most commonly used. Some organic ones include fir bark which is the most popular out of all the organic materials. You can also apply osmunda fiber as well as coconut husks. Inorganic types include charcoal, lava rock, and sometimes alifor. My personal favorites are the organic kind because I find that orchids grow better in these types of mediums. Another easy way is to just purchase pre packaged orchid medium that is sold commercially in hardware stores such as home depot. Some large nurseries may also sell orchid soil too.

Tip #2 the Perfect Orchid Habitat

This is where many people get confused or just don't have the right information. When growing orchids indoors setting up the perfect climate for these plants is relatively easy and inexpensive if you know what to do. The one thing about orchids is that they love the hot humid weather, but are particular when it comes to the amount of humidity and sunlight that surrounds them. During the summer place your orchids on a windowsill that is protected by a curtain or any other type of transparent material. This will prevent sunburn on your plants and will give them the right amount of sunlight they need to thrive. When winter comes around be sure to keep your flowers away from the windows as they could bring in cold air and may harm your flowers.

Let's discuss adding humidity into the atmosphere or where your orchid plants reside. There is a simple yet effective trick you can do to place humidity into the air which will provide your orchids with the correct amount of humidity. If you have an old tray laying around you are going to need it. Place inside of this tray a level amount of gravel or small rocks. Put water into this tray that is below the top of the gravel line and then place your flowers on top of the rocks. If your plants are touching the water then you put too much and you will have to dump some out. Once you get the water at the right level then you can leave your plants there and they will receive the right amount of humidity they need. If you want to check you can always purchase a hydrometer that can measure the humidity in the air. You should have a humidity level of about 60-80 percent when growing orchids indoors.

From this article you can see how growing orchids indoors can be easily accomplished with just two simple orchid care tips. Now it's time for you to start growing your own beautiful orchids indoors using these tips. And find more garding tools

There was a time when a vegetable adult lacking chemicals was the norm.

The petition to strategy organically has been rejuvenated as people have become increasingly uneasy about the questionable shelter of commercial chemicals worn to defend their foods.

Organic engendered can be purchased at almost any grocery collect now, but it can be a foremost plan buster for a standard family in tough fiscal time. The merit of Organic Gardening Magazines can be jaggedly twice that of comparable non-organic food. As a significance, mounting your own organic crop can revive you a lot of green in the long run.

The Meaning of Organic

The span is equitably minimum as it relates to farm. Produce that is developed lacking chemical fertilizers and pesticides are considered organic. Many gardeners safely deem that organic harvest is the healthiest - and tastiest - promising artifact.

Though organic farming fallout in improved nutrition, it frankly takes a lot more work and daily management to make it a successful work. As an answer, although the debatable shelter of ingesting chemically protected food, there is no denying that the relation slip of with commercial fertilizers and pesticides becomes a temptation for even the most keen organic farmer.

Setting the Soil

There are many parts that make up the organic farming process - the most important being the soil. Poor soil eminence makes organic gardening a frustrating experience for producing a plush plot. It's all in the dirt!

Before you as a gardener sow the first seed, have your plot soil weathered. A soil assessment will give you a good starting idea on its condition. There are both independent and public labs that can run these tests for you.

Feeding the Soil

A property soil assess will provide a printout detailing the condition of the soil. It will also proposal suggestions on habits to equalize your soil. Given this, it is important before the trial to tell the lab about your intentions to grow an organic garden. Technicians can then adapt their recommendations to help know the organic requirements.

With your soil suffering fallout in hand, there are then many expected ways to supply your soil. Animal wastes, food scrapes and yard garbage can all be used to encourage an ordinary food basis. You can also find commercially primed manure unfilled in gardening Organic Gardening Magazines, while this might be a dear choice for gardeners fertilizing a large plot.

Cultivating Compost

A manure mountain is hard set up first. Once established, though, muck piles oblige minimal maintenance. It is much easier and outlay effectual to have the personal muck megabucks on hand. Mix the compost into your soil annually. Plants lessen the nutrients in the soil throughout the year, so they will indigence to be added back for the following year's organic garden.

Organic gardening admittedly takes a little more work, but the exertion is well worth it. This Part II will concentrate on pruning, re-potting, core pruning, and the frost caution of your Japanese maple.

Pruning

The Japanese maple bonsai is shaped, in part, as an effect of vigilant and planned pruning. You can reduce plants, twigs and roots with additional internode pinching. Fall is the perfect time of year to condense a Japanese maple due to the truth you'll find it easier to see the form of the ranking when there are no grass, but more significantly because the plants nosebleed seriously if pruned at the beginning of bounce. This flow will be minimized if the ranking's roots are pruned before you abridge it's kindling. All wounds resultant from pruning the ranking's kindling should be sealed with a wound dressing available at your adjacent plot warehouse or playgroup. If you are departing to abridge the ranking's roots and keep out some twig pruning the best time of year is to do both in the plunge.

Top-nick bonsai specimens story pleasant branches. The scheme to invent penalty branches is to stop long internodes. On a sphere of a ranking you will find there's universe between one brace of grass and the next couple of shrubbery. This is whats called the internode. To shorten the internode you'll want commonly to pinch back all the new expansion throughout the rising spell. You'll want to pinch back new shoots by pruning them back to just two sets of grass (internodes). When you pinch off new shoots it creates a shorter internode on the next zoom, and when the internodes are shorter the foliage is commonly denser.

Pruning the grass on your Japanese maple (removal of foliage during the growing season), also called defoliating, can be accepted out every other year at the beginning of summer to support lesser grass. Leaf pruning results in all the ranking's plants being impassive, but being very assiduous to allow the folio's stem linked to the part. By removing the foliage in this approach the hierarchy thinks it collapse and it will then fabricate a moment set of foliage that will be minor than the first set bent in the leap.

When to Re-Pot Your Japanese Maple

As a general judge most bonsai foliage ought to be re-sealed every two days. The helps in avoiding the roots from being overcrowded. The best time of year to re-pot your bonsai is in the plunge. The prime purpose that you want to re-pot every few years is to give yourself the opportunity to condense the roots of your hierarchy. The effect of core pruning is departing to be to stimulate vigorous new advance. It will be easier to condense the roots if you bathe them off with water once you have removed the stand from it's pot. Be clearly wisely to appraise and get rid of all obsolete or dented roots. The ideal potting mixture consists of loam, peat, and coarse sand in a 1:1:1 ratio. For all styles excepting a cascading smartness, you indigence to use a shallow pot. For this logic fall is the best time to shorten the roots because the hierarchy is slowing it's processes of moving water and nutrients through the ranking besides. My absolute favorite broad leaf evergreen is the Carol Mackie Daphne. Now that I have let the cat out of the bag, here in more detail are my top three broad leaf evergreens.

Number 1 - Carol Mackie Daphne. As I mentioned the is my favorite but it's worth mentioning again, I LOVE this shrub. Its Latin name is Daphne x burkwoodii and it's hardy to zone 4. It can get up to 3 feet wide with a mounded shape. The fragrance it gives off when flowering in May is simply incredible. A quick pruning after flowering keeps this spectacular specimen compact and beautiful for about 7 years. Yes it's unfortunate but they do have short life span. I promise however you won't be disappointed!

Number 2 - Green Gem Boxwood. Everyone has to have at least a few Green Gem Boxwoods. The Buxus mic. var. insularis 'Green Gem' is a staple for any border hedge. It's rated zone 5 and can grow 2 1/2 feet tall with a slightly wider spread. The dense dark green foliage stays pretty much all year around.

Number 3 - Golden Spirea. I know what you are thinking; this is a classic 'industrial' plant. Yes the Spiraea japonica 'Goldflame' is usually spotted in mass plantings around factories and corporate buildings but there's a reason for this. They are VERY low maintenance and can take quite a beating. Good to zone 2 these 3 foot tall and 3 1/2 foot wide shrubs are never a bad choice.

Now then, I actually did have a tie for the top spot. The Carol Mackie Daphne won the coin toss but there's one other broad leaf ever green that I love and it works in so many gardens and locations. It is Pachysandra or Japanese Spurge. This ground cover words best in shady locations but is also great under evergreens! Hardy to zone 3, the only thing to consider is Japanese Spurge requires rich, acidic soil.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Thomas_Green

Make sure that your garden is easy to use. Things like the position of the washing line, shed, or the barbeque will make a big difference to how much they get used.

8. Will you want additional storage space from your garden? What about a shed or a garage, or a play house for the children. You might want to build a home office or kids summerhouse.

9. Perhaps you could turn some of the garden into an additional play area. What about adding a sandpit, or having somewhere to store the bikes and other outdoor toys and games?

10. Whatever you have planned for the garden, you'll need to compromise with other members of the family. What might be important to you might not be important to the rest of the family. You might want a cottage garden full of flowers, but will your children? You might want a minimalistic garden that easy to maintain, but will there be an plants and flowers in the spring and summer? You might want a pond, but are the children old enough to be safe near it?

Once you've decided how you want your garden, and got some gardening ideas, you can then design it properly and make the most of it. By getting it right in the first place, you'll be able to enjoy it all year round.

Discover more fantastic Gardening Ideas and make the most of your home grown fruit and vegetables with Healthy Family Recipes from Candis Magazine.
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=M_James

They take a minimal of care and the ability to train and prune them can be a great creative outlet. Not all bonsai trees are the same and there are many different types of trees that can be interesting to grow. A favorite for bonsai enthusiasts is the braided money plant tree as it is easy to grow and makes a great indoor plant.

The braided bonsai money plant tree, also known as Pachira aquatica, is a miniature tree characterized by multiple intertwining trunks. Each tree is actually four to five separate trees with their trunks braided together. Its size varies anywhere from 10-18 inches tall. (Full-grown money plant trees can reach 7 feet tall.) The tree is topped with large, bright green leaves that form a tuft at the tip of each stem.

The braided bonsai money plant tree is usually given as a gift, as it is reputed to bring good luck. Generally, the more leaves the money tree has, the better! While it is common to find money trees with five to six leaves on each stem, it is quite rare to find one with seven leaves. Like a four-leaf clover, a money plant tree with a seven-leaf stem is considered to bring incredibly good fortune.

The braided bonsai money plant tree is also a mainstay in feng shui. Feng shui practitioners believe that the braided bonsai creates positive energy for any room that it placed in. According to this belief, you should place your money tree in the “financial” part of your home or office. Each new leaf of the tree will then bring added financial blessing and success.

The Pachira aquatica is an easy bonsai to grow; it is ideal for indoor cultivation. Unlike other bonsai, it is quite hardy. It can thrive for many years with minimal care. It is tolerant of both low light conditions and dryness. All you will need is a little bit of soil to hold the roots. Other than that, brief exposure to sunlight and weekly watering will be enough to make the plant thrive.
The amount of water you give your plant is critical and one common mistake that many beginning plant owners make is over watering. This can actually kill your plant! You want to be sure to water so that the soil is moist but you don’t want to put so much in so that there is standing water in the planter.

If you are a bonsai beginner, the braided bonsai can be ideal for you! (And the added luck couldn’t hurt.) Even if the braided bonsai money plant tree you acquire seems to have damaged leaves, don’t worry. Those leaves will drop off and beautiful leaves will sprout up in their place. Enjoy both your tree and your newfound luck!

Lee Dobbins writes for http://bonsai.garden-corner.com/ where you can learn more about bonsai plants as well as find out about more types of bonsai trees.
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Lee_Dobbins

Or something for the cook in your life. It's not often that something completely novel shows up in the world of gardening, but the Aerogrow Aerogarden Indoors Hydroponics kit is something new, that uses technology that did not exist ten or fifteen years ago, and at one point was actually featured in Time magazine.
The Aerogrow system is a completely self contained hydroponics system. Hydroponics is a soil-less system, in which the plant's root system actually grow in enriched or fertilized water.

Because the Aerogarden is a soil-less hydroponic system, it eliminates a lot of the mess associated with indoor container gardens. There is also no risk of soil-borne diseases or pests when using a hydroponics unit.

The Aerogrow Aerogarden kit includes not only the hydroponics system, complete with a computer controlled pump, but a built in adjustable grow light as well. Because of this level of automation, you can set the system up and not bother it for up to two weeks. It includes seed sets for many different types of plants. Ranging from herbs to to salad fixings to small vegetables there are seed kits for many different types of vegetables. You simply set the computer control for the type of seeds you have selected, and you are set to go.

Because this is an indoor hydroponic unit, the Aerogrow system can be used year round. Harvesting herbs and vegetables in the middle of winter is not a problem, and it can be used indoors in the heat of the Southwest summers to keep a supply of vegetables that would normally wilt that far south.

How well does the this indoor hydroponic system work? To learn more you can go to our complete Aerogrow Aerogarden Hydroponic System review along with time lapse videos of the assembly and operation of the unit at How to Garden Guide
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=J_Ruppel

In fact, the multitude of choices available can often throw people into a state of confusion. To make it easier, we have outlined seven of the most popular kinds.

1. Cattleya - The Corsage

Come from South American rainforest regions where they can be found growing high up in the trees

Have big, frilly blooms ranging in colour from pink and purple to yellow and white; images of these are often seen adorning chocolate boxes

They like humid surroundings, keep the temperature up and keep them away from other vegetation as they are very sensitive

2. Dendrobiums - Tree Flowers

Very popular as they have lots of lovely coloured, long-flowering blooms along the whole length of their stems

Many sub-varieties exist and are relatively easy to grow if you know the precise requirements of your individual type

These are good orchids to start off with as they generally like to be left to themselves if their environment is right

3. Cymbidium - Little Boat

Originate from China and Japan

Are available in delicate green, white and pinkish shades

Look stunning as they have numerous large flowers and are tall in length

Slightly more difficult to maintain as they have quite precise temperature requirements which will need to be varied at night, but are definitely worth the extra effort

4. Phalaenopsis - The Moth

Found mainly in Indonesia

Very easy to grow in comparison to many of their relatives but are very susceptible to root-rot if over-watered

Flower on a yearly schedule

Do well in indoor environments as they love higher temperatures so take well to central heating and greenhouse heaters

5. Paphiopedilums - Lady's Slipper

Flowers have the characteristic pouch-like form that gives rise to their name

Exist in a range of striking colours and hold a few blooms per stem and, as an added bonus have gorgeously patterned leaves too

Largely found in the Far East

Are more resistant to root-rot resulting from over-hydration but more prone to scorching if placed in harsh sunlight

6. Oncidiums - Dancing Ladies

Have the striking appearance similar to a lady in a ball-gown that makes their nickname so suitable

Sprout many flowers so are very aesthetically pleasing

Are more able to handle intense light than other types of orchids so are great for greenhouses and sunnier weathers.

7. Vanda orchids

Available in a multitude of deep, striking hues and can grow quite tall

Blossom at least bi-annually so give really good aesthetic value

Originate from the warm, humid regions of the Himalayas and Australia

Have very high light requirements so do better in certain climates

Take yourself down to your local garden centre and have a look at the varieties that they have on offer and, if you're still stuck for choice, why not grow them all? One thing that's guaranteed is this: once you start you won't want to stop.

Find more Garden tools.

Carl Harrison is an orchid enthusiast. Organic fertilizers are either animal, mineral or vegetable based. Animal based organic fertilizers are a by-product of the farming and meat industry. Products like manures, blood meal, bone meal and fish products are all part of this type of fertilizer.

Manures are the most common type of organic fertilizer that comes to mind to the home gardener. They can supply a lot of organic matter to the gardens soil to improve the soils structure. Most manures can be low in nutrients depending on there content, except for a few. Like chicken manure, it is high in nitrogen and should be used only after composted. When applied directly to plants it can burn the root system of young tender plants very easily. Other bird based fertilizers like bat or seabird guano can be purchased at most local garden centers. It has a high nitrogen content usually around fourteen percent and also has many micro-nutrients. It is excellent to be used on leafy nitrogen loving plants like lettuce.

Bone meal is commonly used as a source of phosphorous and calcium. It is the by-product of animal and fish bones. It comes in powder form and is commonly used on root crops.
Fish by-products are excellent fertilizers and they come in several different forms. There is fish emulsion that is in the liquid form and has a strong fish odor. It is an excellent complete fertilizer and will add needed trace elements to the soil for plants to benefit from. When diluted with water it is gentle and very effective in stimulating the growth of young seedlings.

Hydrolyzed fish powder is another by-product of fish and is high in nitrogen. It is commonly mixed with water and applied as a spray on plant foliage

Fish meal is a fish by-product that is high in nitrogen and phosphorus.
