Raw Milk Raid on Amish Farmer Highlights Stupid FDA Tactics

Reason contributor Baylen Linnekin writes about a totally insane (and armed!) raid on an Amish farmer in Pennsylvania who dared provide raw milk and other dairy products to willing and knowing DC-area customers. The details of the raid are disturbing and so is the rationale against the purchase of the stuff in question:

Anyone who has ever brought home a dozen eggs from a grocer’s shelves has purchased raw food. And once a consumer brings any food home, it’s up to the consumer - not the government - to decide how (or if) he or she wants to cook the food. The notion that the government would ban raw chicken, beef or eggs - or deli meat, for that matter - from store shelves may seem ludicrous. Seen in this context, the current raw milk ban is no less absurd.
Even if consumers were unaware of the risk involved in consuming a raw agricultural product like raw milk or raw beef, FDA and USDA guidelines, along with many state and local health codes, typically require warnings about the potential dangers of consuming raw or undercooked foods. Where a warning will suffice, a ban is inappropriate. The FDA’s extraordinary message when it comes to raw milk, though, is that the American people are too dim to read the very labels the agency requires.

Things get heated up when we discuss vaccines

We can talk about problems with cyanide, global warming, cell phone/EMF, Vioxx, arsenic in the water, chemotherapy, etc etc etc. But as soon as we start taking about problems caused by vaccines, there is an enormous polarization. People get offended and defensive. The battle is often heated, separating families, spouses, communities. It is always amazing to me how strongly a parent will defend the rights to inject their children with viruses, bacteria and chemicals.
　
A vaccine is a drug...a widget of Pharma. Will we ever get to the place of unemotionally discussing that widget? I really can't recall a single person who has truly investigated vaccine science and examined what is in vaccines and then has chosen to continue to vaccinate. Vaccines cause harm. The risks are substantial and evidence is growing. The long term risks outweigh the short term benefit of eliminating childhood diseases that were Rights of Passage only a few years ago.

Would we lobby for the right of a parent to continue to use thalidomide, knowing the potential for harm? Not every woman who took the drug gave birth to a child with defects. But as soon as the *potential* for harm was identified, the drug was removed from the market.

Not so with vaccines. Hundreds of thousands of children and adults have been maimed by this pharma widget. What an incredible double standard. A week of reading VAERS reports should be mandatory all those involved with this issue....and for every medical doctor, nurse and public health official before they are allowed to administer a shot. When you read the hundreds and hundreds of tragic stories, the true insanity of vaccination is apparent to even the most unmedical minds.

I support laws that allow the right to choose because I want to do everything I can to support those who do not want to vaccinate. But as hypocritical as it may sound, I am not doing this to support the rights for those who are want to choose to vaccinate. I do not support the right to harm children. To me, that is no different than lobbying for the right to of parents to beat their children.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Amazon, under US pressure for hosting WikiLeaks, booted it from its computer servers on Wednesday, prompting the whistleblower website to shift to Web-hosting services in Europe.

"It is unfortunate that it took Amazon five months to terminate its relationships with WikiLeaks, and only after having political pressure applied," said Peter King, a Republican congressman from New York.

"While I wish that Amazon had taken this step when US soldiers' lives were first put in danger by WikiLeaks back in July, I am heartened that the company has finally corrected its action," King said in a statement.

"This situation should serve as an example for all private US and international companies that conducting business with WikiLeaks is intolerable and against American interests," he said.

WikiLeaks, in messages on its Twitter feed @wikileaks, confirmed it had been "ousted" from Amazon's servers and needled the online retail giant for failing to support First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech.

"Free speech the land of the free -- fine our dollars are now spent to employ people in Europe," WikiLeaks said. "If Amazon are so uncomfortable with the First Amendment, they should get out of the business of selling books."

WikiLeaks on Sunday began publishing the first batch of more than 250,000 US diplomatic cables the website is believed to have obtained from a disaffected US soldier.

The WikiLeaks website was sluggish and periodically unavailable on Wednesday but it was not immediately clear if this was due to its hosting issues or if it had again come under cyberattack as in previous days.

Senator Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said he planned to discuss the hosting of WikiLeaks with the Seattle-based Amazon.

"I will be asking Amazon about the extent of its relationship with WikiLeaks and what it and other Web service providers will do in the future to ensure that their services are not used to distribute stolen, classified information," the independent senator from Connecticut said.

Amazon is a major provider of Web-hosting services, renting out space on its computer servers to customers around the world. It has not responded to repeated requests from AFP for confirmation that it was hosting WikiLeaks.

WikiLeaks said Sunday and again on Monday that it was the target of distributed denial of service, or DDoS, attacks aimed at shutting down or slowing the website.

Classic DDoS attacks occur when legions of "zombie" computers, normally machines infected with viruses, are commanded to simultaneously visit a website, overwhelming servers or knocking them offline completely.

On Monday, a computer hacker known as the "Jester" claimed responsibility for temporarily taking down the WikiLeaks website on Sunday.

Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at computer security firm F-Secure, told AFP he believed the "Jester," who has targeted Islamic jihadist websites in the past, had the ability to carry out the attack on WikiLeaks.

"He's demonstrated previously that he is capable of launching effective denial-of-service attacks, and he's claimed the responsibility for this one as well," Hypponen said. "He has the capability and the motive."

Iraq war leaks 'reveal the truth'

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says Iraq war documents 'reveal the truth'

The man behind the posting of 400,000 leaked classified US military reports on the internet said that he wanted to reveal the truth behind the Iraq war.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange told a news conference in London that they were seeking to create the "maximum political impact possible" through their latest release.

"This disclosure is about the truth," he said. "We hope to correct some of that attack on the truth that occurred before the war, during the war, and which has continued on since the war officially concluded."

He added: "While I am not sure we have achieved the maximum possible (political impact) I think we are getting pretty close."

Mr Assange said that the reports documented 109,000 deaths - including 66,000 civilians, of which 15,000 were previously undocumented.

"That tremendous scale should not make us blind to the small human scale in this material. It is the deaths of one and two people per event that killed the overwhelming number of people in Iraq," he said.

Iraq Prime Minister Nouri Maliki said the timing of the documents' release raises questions about whether it was motivated by politics.

Mr Maliki, a Shiite, has been fighting for more than seven months to keep his job after national elections in March failed to produce a clear winner. A statement released by his office said the documents show no proof of any improper treatment of detainees while Mr Maliki has been at the helm of the Iraqi government.

Solicitor Phil Shiner of Public Interest Lawyers said some of the deaths documented in the reports could have involved British forces and would now be the subject of legal action through the UK courts.

"Some of these deaths will be in circumstances where the UK have a very clear legal responsibility," he said. "This may be because the Iraqis died while under the effective control of UK forces - under arrest, in vehicles, helicopters or detention facilities."

Suddenly, Nigerian politicians have found their voice again. They had been in lexical limbo; an indicator of inactivity in the polity. This is also an aberration because in the nation's political space, there is no dormancy. Brickbats, diatribes and raucous twaddle form a rich part of the vocal vocation of the Nigerian politician. Thus, in our very short history of constitutional government, they have foisted on our subconscious some words and phraseologies. Now, there is yet another word: Zoning! It is a cousin of Federal Character, a constitutional coinage meant to enforce a semblance of equity in the distribution of the nation's wealth through equitable sharing of positions to suit its diversity. But zoning has no place in the constitution. Rather, it was coined by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to reflect a sharing principle that would ensure no part of the country gets undue dominance in the sharing of electoral positions. Nothing wrong with a formula that seeks equity, fairness and justice.

The chief argument against zoning is that it breeds a culture of mediocrity. I disagree. There is currently no part of the country that cannot produce fit and proper persons for any advertised position. A section of the country may have more skilled personnel than the other but no more. On that score, this argument fizzles. Therefore, zoning is good in so far as it would engender equity and fairness. Zoning is beautiful if it is pursued with a sense of responsibility and sincerity. But zoning becomes evil, in fact immoral, if the protagonists are themselves vile men of ignoble conduct and despicable reputation.

And this is my angst against those who are mouthing zoning in obvious rage against President Goodluck Jonathan's intent to run for election in 2011. They are a bunch of vile men; at best a tribe of hypocrites. This essay is not to endorse the propriety or otherwise of Mr President to run; no. It is, instead, to underscore the futility, deviant desperation and sheer hypocrisy that garb the argument that the zoning principle of the PDP should be respected. Truth is, nothing has ever been respected in Nigeria . This nation has wobbled for 50 years on the ramparts of duplicity and bureaucratic tomfoolery. We have often mouthed zoning, federal character and quota system, all of which seek to enthrone a system of equity and justice. But where is justice to the people of the Niger Delta who have over the years produced the wealth of the nation but who never got the opportunity to preside over the affairs of the same nation they have sustained with the resources that flow in their veins? This is why zoning in its present configuration is deceptive, deceitful and defective and does not address the cries of the long neglected people of the South South.

Shouldn't we also zone resource control in the spirit of true fiscal federalism by allowing every state to have control over its resources? Was there no quota system, federal character or a semblance of zoning when one northern general would hand over to another northern general? Why do we not have zoning or federal character in the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service or the military for that matter until early 2000 when ex-President Obasanjo rejigged that key security apparatchik? Let's ponder the list of our past leaders from Independence : Tafawa Balewa, Ironsi, Gowon, Murtala Mohammed, Obasanjo, Shagari, Buhari, IBB, Shonekan, Abacha, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Obasanjo (second time around), Yar'Adua and Jonathan. Does this list reflect federal character or zoning in any way? Shouldn't we spare a thought for the silent and hurting minorities?

Latter day champions of zoning think of it as a ping-pong ball that swings between the North and the South. This is wrong. Zoning in its proper meaning must take into cognition the diverse and solidly discrete components that make up the geographical North and South; it must not be the simplistic bipartition of North and South otherwise it would as it were remain a horse whip in the hands of the majority to perpetually lord it over the variegated minorities. This is what the current zoning arrangement in the PDP and in fact other political parties is; an instrument for marginalisation. But zoning ought to integrate not alienate. Zoning in its pure sense should provide a rallying corpus for the various components of the nation including the minorities. It must assure them that they are a part of the larger Nigerian union. Pray, of what use is zoning if it does not succour the pains of that part of the nation which produces the wealth that ravishes the flamboyance of the same politicians who only see zoning as a North and South hymnal.

Zoning, the type that would promote peace and national integration, must transcend the bipartite frontiers of North and South, it must recognise the fact that the minorities also have as much right to lead the nation as any other group of persons. This is why the PDP must rethink and rework its zoning arrangement.

Tuition fee hike would be 'final nail' in higher education coffin

PROPOSALS to allow universities to set their own tuition fees will be the "final nail in the coffin" for affordable higher education, ministers were warned today.

Students would be forced to pay thousands of pounds more for their degrees, with the prospect that institutions could charge as much as £12,000 a year for some courses - compared to the current £3,290 - under proposals outlined in a long-awaited review of funding.

Graduates would also pay back loans at a much higher rate of interest, equal to the Governments cost of borrowing, which could leave them facing many years of debt.

The proposals represent the most radical shake-up of the student funding system for years.

But the National Union of Students (NUS) warned that if adopted, the proposals would hand universities a blank cheque and lead to a market in higher education.

NUS president Aaron Porter said: "The only thing students and their families would stand to gain from higher fees would be higher debts.

"A market in course prices between universities would increasingly put pressure on students to make decisions based on cost rather than academic ability or ambition.

"Those already feeling the pinch will clearly be unwilling to take such a gamble and face being priced out of the universities that would opt to charge sky-high fees."

Sally Hunt, general secretary of the University and College Union, warned: "Lord Browne's recommendations, if enacted, represent the final nail in the coffin for affordable higher education.

"His proposals will make our public degrees the most expensive in the world and price the next generation out of education."

The review calls for universities to be left to set their own fees, with the Government fully underwriting fees up to £6,000 a year.

Universities charging over that will be hit with a tapered levy to cover the cost to Government of providing the students with finance, and will keep progressively less of the extra funding.

For example, an institution charging £7,000 for a course will keep 94 per cent of the fee.

The review sets out figures up to £12,000 per year - universities charging this will still keep nearly three-quarters (73 per cent) of the fee.

But it does not specify any cap, saying there should be no single fixed price for higher education because all universities are different and provide different courses.

The recommendation is likely to be seen as a highly controversial option for the Government and politically explosive for the Liberal Democrats, who campaigned against tuition fees during the general election.

An analysis of deaths dating from 2003, when rebels took up arms against the government of Sudan, showed that after an initial peak of violent deaths in the still-ongoing conflict, diseases associated with diarrhoea became the major killers.

The researchers said their results showed that any reduction in humanitarian aid can cause deaths rates to increase sharply, raising "serious concerns" about the consequences of last year's expulsion of aid workers from Sudan by the country's president.

"We should fear the worst," they wrote in a study in The Lancet medical journal.

Since the armed rebellion started in early 2003, the United Nations estimates 300,000 people have died and more than 2 million have been driven from their homes after a counter-insurgency campaign by Khartoum.

"More than 80 percent of excess deaths were not a result of the violence," said Olivier Degomme and Debarati Guha-Sapir of the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of disasters in Brussels.

They said a violent peak in early 2004 was followed by "protracted phase of increased disease-related" deaths caused by people living in conditions of unsanitary conditions with little or no healthcare infrastructure.

Diarrhoea kills some 1.5 million children each year around the world -- more than AIDS, malaria and measles combined.

There are three main forms -- acute, bloody and persistent -- all of which are potentially life-threatening.

"Adequate humanitarian assistance to prevent and treat these potentially fatal diseases is essential," Degomme and Guha-Sapir wrote. "The full effect of the expulsion of non-governmental organisations from Darfur is still not known, but the increased mortality rate during a period of reduced humanitarian deployment in 2006 suggests that we should fear the worst."

The International Criminal Court last year issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes in Darfur. He rejects the court's authority and puts the death toll at 10,000.
