There is no doubt that the Golden State Warriors are a excellent basketball team and behind a great team is a excellent Coach, Steven Kerr recently made headlines with his remarks by pleading to his fans to avoid back surgery due to the terrible side effects he experienced and advocated therapy instead.
As a practicing Chiropractor in NYC for over 20 years I have seen this happen many times.
Patients going the medical route are either prescribed dangerous and addictive medications that have deadly side effects or are told to get a surgery.
American is currently in a Opioid Epidemic where close to 94 people a day are dying! due to abuse and overuse of prescribed narcotics this has also caused the current Heroin problem.

Surgery should be the last resort after you have exhausted all your non-surgical options.
Chiropractic
I wanted to share a recent news piece written by the Daily Mail that I was interviewed for below.
Daily Mail Chiropractic mention
I have seen tremendous success with Combining Chiropractic adjustments with Non-surgical spinal decompression utilizing the DRX 9000 machine.
If someone has a herniated or bulging disc that is causing them to suffer with back pain or even leg pain consider visiting a Chiropractor.
Chiropractic care has been proven time over time to be the most effective and safest treatment for those suffering with back pain.

Today I wanted to update my NYC Chiropractor blog with how I integrate different modalities into my practice. I started up a new patient this morning that went skiing this past weekend and fell.
He stated that he fell hard but shook it off and continued to ski for a couple more hours and then the Pain set in.
The Pain was so bad that he went to a local NY hospital, They evaluated and took X rays and said he was fine but was still hurting so he sought out the treatment of a Chiropractor.

I was able to evaluate how poor his range of motion was in his cervical spine (neck) specifically his lower neck, We took spinal X rays (the Hospital only took a PA chest to rule out a Pneumothorax)
His Radio-graphic findings revealed a noticeable spinal misalignment at his 7th Cervical.
We started his treatment with moist heat and Pre-Modulated stimulation.
Once he was all warmed up and loose I did some gentle Cox Cervical distraction of his neck followed by a modified diversified adjustment of his lower cervical spine.
His range of motion improved but I needed to addresses the soft tissue (Muscle,Fascia) so I utilized some IASTM using the Graston technique and followed up with Deep Tissue Laser Therapy.

So what is Deep Tissue Laser Therapy?

This form of Laser therapy is a scientifically proven way to reduce pain and inflammation.
DLLT allows for deeper tissue penetration, resulting in fast, efficient and consistent results.
Laser Therapy generated a photo-chemical response in damaged tissue by a process called photobiomodulation. This process stimulates healing on a cellular level by enabling cells to more rapidly produce energy.
I am wrapped up his treatment by using Kinesology tape specifically Rock tape to help relieve the swelling through decompression of the skin which speeds recovery and helps support proper posture and form.
It has been a while since I have updated this blog, But I am back and ready to journal some of the recent clinical findings and patient success stories.
The Weather here in NYC has been nut's, last week it snowed almost a foot followed by a inch or two of ice.
A patient wrenched his back that Sunday and finally made it into my office today. He spent the past 4 days in bed doubled over in pain and medicating with little results.
It was very obvious to me based on his mechanism of injury- he was shoveling a driveway for 3 Hours! that he irritated his discs and tweaked his lumbar muscles.
Not many of my patients and fellow Manhattan residents do much shoveling but this guy did and then some.
I started him with some Cox flexion distraction technique to reduce his nerve irritation (He was complaining of Sciatica like symptoms) and increase Disc height (His fourth Lumbar disc was previously herniated)
We followed up with the Graston Technique which is a form of ISTM or instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and some percussion into his Glut medius and Piriformis.
His fourth lumbar needed a chiropractic adjustment and his cervical spine needed some Cervical spinal decompression.
The next step was onto the DRX 9000 Spinal Decompression machine which I firmly believe and clinical studies show to provide the most successful outcomes and patient comfort.
After the spinal decompression with used (Ice) and inferential stimulation,
We wrapped up the session by stabilizing his Back Muscles with Rock tape which lifts the skin away from the muscles and fascia, which decompresses the area.
He left like he was worked on and tomorrow should feel loads better.
What drove me back to this Blog is the fact that 94 people are dying a day from abuse and misuse of prescribed narcotics that are given to patients by their trusted family doctor. A recent study by the American college of physicians https://www.acponline.org/acp-newsroom/american-college-of-physicians-issues-guideline-for-treating-nonradicular-low-back-pain
pointed to new guidelines that leaned away from prescribing medication for non-radiating pain.
When we combine Chiropractic care and Spinal Decompression we help so many patients avoid unnecessary surgery and avoid dangerous narcotics.
What has always fascinated me as a Chiropractor that has practiced for 20 plus years in Manhattan and dedicated myself to nonsurgical techniques such as Spinal decompression was Our bodies Amazing ability to heal it self once you remove the irritation to the nervous system- not only does the pain go way but the body is stronger and patients are happier and can return to moving and enjoying their life.

Cold laser therapy, an effective and innovative physical rehabilitation tool, is a safe and painless aid in the treatment of pain, sports injuries, automobile injuries, muscle sprains, ligament tears, nerve inflammation, and much more. Dr. Shoshany and his staff have successfully treated a wide range of conditions in NYC with the help of cold laser therapy, which stimulates healing and enhances results by speeding up recovery time and decreasing pain and discomfort.

Dr. Shoshany’s cold laser therapy treatments have been so successful, that he was invited by Dr. Mehmet Oz to perform a cold laser demonstration on a patient with neck pain on his NBC program, The Dr. Oz Show in 2013. Click here for a clip of Dr. Shoshany’s appearance on The Dr. Oz Show.

Cold laser therapy works by stimulating and improving the body’s natural cellular function. The cold laser therapy device emits a low-level light beam that is aimed directly at the affected body area. While the patient rests comfortably, the painless laser goes to work by traveling under the skin and into the cells’ mitochondria, where ATP production increases thanks to the laser stimulation. Increased ATP translates into a progressive reduction in inflammation, discomfort, and pain, as well as faster healing.

The applications of cold laser therapy are numerous, and range from sports injuries such as muscle
or ligament tears, to ankle sprains, leg cramps, fractures, and even serious chronic conditions such as
arthritis, knee pain, neck pain, arm pain, back pain, and others.

There are no negative risks or side effects associated with the use of cold laser therapy, and the
treatment can be prescribed on its own or as a complement to other physical rehabilitation treatments in
order to obtain better results.

New Yorkers are susceptible to painful knee injuries because of the high level of activity that’s part of everyday life in NYC. Because of New Yorkers’ active lifestyle, healthy knees are a top priority whether the patient is an athlete or average city dweller. Dr. Steven Shoshany and his staff offer the latest in non-surgical treatments for knee pain at his state-of-the-art physical rehabilitation facility in downtown Manhattan.

One of the most successful and effective therapies for knee pain is cold laser therapy. This revolutionary treatment is simple, safe, and extremely useful for reduction of pain, inflammation, discomfort, and faster healing of knee injuries. Cold laser works by penetrating the affected soft tissue in the knee down to the cellular level, where ATP production in the mitochondria is multiplied exponentially thanks to the painless laser beam. An increase in ATP translates into faster tissue regeneration to heal damage faster than the body would on its own. This boost in healing time is crucial for busy New Yorkers who don’t have time for treatments that require downtime. Cold laser therapy can be prescribed on its own or as part of a comprehensive treatment program, depending on the patient’s condition. There are no known negative side effects and the treatment is comfortable and painless.

Pinched nerves can affect New Yorkers of any age and
activity level. Pinched nerves are
caused by vertebral subluxations, which take place when vertebrae become
herniated and misaligned, placing excessive pressure on discs and nerves. When nerves are under stress, the
interference caused by the extreme pressure results in pain, spinal imbalances,
and various ailments within the body.
Pain from a pinched nerve can be so debilitating as to cause temporary
or permanent paralysis of the affected area.

Pinched nerves are caused by trauma to the body, which can
come about due to poor posture, prolonged periods of inactivity in one
position, excessive body weight, pregnancy, sports injuries, accidents, and
more.

A pinched nerve may not be detected until the patient feels
pain, which is usually the last symptom to appear. Regular spinal maintenance can detect and
correct subluxations as well as prevent future spinal injury and pain.

Pinched nerve in the Low back

Sciatica treatment in NYC

We have been treating low back pain and Sciatica to NYC
residents for over 15 years. We use a combination of Chiropractic adjustments,
massage therapy, Physical therapy, Non-surgical spinal decompression, Cold
laser therapy, Interventional pain management.

One of the main reasons people suffer with low back pain and
Sciatica is a “Pinched Nerve” in the low back. Pinched nerves are usually the
result of a herniated or bulging disc in the lumbar spine at L5-S1.

When a nerve has pressure on it your body will let you know,
in fact a study conducted on nerve pressure revealed that the weight of a
postage stamp cut nerve signal down by 50%.

The Sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and allot
of structures can put pressure on this sensitive nerve a partial list of things
that can cause irritation to the Sciatic nerve include bulging or herniated
discs, spinal stenosis, disc
degeneration and sometimes even muscles.

One common muscle that affects the Sciatic nerve is the
Piriformis muscles it is a triangular shaped muscle in your buttocks region and
when this muscle shortens or tightens it can produce a condition called “Piriformis
syndrome” symptoms can include low back pain, numbness and or tingling down into
the buttocks or legs, muscle stiffness and or spasms that get worse with time.

If you think you have a pinched nerve the most important
thing is to get a proper diagnosis and start the most conservative treatment. What
makes our office unique is that we have a Doctor of Osteopathy, Chiropractor, Physical
therapist and a Massage therapist working together to understand what is
causing your problem and coming up with a effective treatment plan to not only
eliminate your symptoms but correct the cause.

Spinal decompression using the DRX 9000 has been a treatment
has helped keep patients from undergoing spinal surgery and has helped
countless patients. The DRX 9000 is designed to treat the nerve compression due
to bulging or herniated discs.

Neglecting knee pain or simply covering up the symptoms with pain killers can cause an acute problem to become chronic. In most cases if knee pain is treated early, long term issues can be avoided.

Pain and discomfort can be caused by something as simple as a problem with a person's gait, or prolonged kneeling.

Most people lack proper flexibility in their lower body and this can lead to mechanical compensations which result in chronic pain. The knee's are especially prone to injury because they are a sliding hinge joint. This means that the knees not only work like a door but the surfaces of the upper and lower leg bones slide across each other. In addition to the cartilage covered femur (thigh bone) and the tibia (shin bone) the patella (knee cap) can also become worn down and can require invasive surgeries.

Types of Arthritis

Arthritis itself is often used as a catchall term for all the different types of arthritis that can affect a person, and arthritis of the knees is on of the most common types. There are a few different types of arthritis of the knee:

Osteoarthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Post-traumatic Arthritis

Arthritis pain usually presents over time and starts off slowly, but sometimes pain can appear quickly and be fairly intense. For a lot of people suffering form arthritis, changes in the weather have been
reported to cause pain and discomfort. The affected knee joint can become swollen and make it hard to bend or straighten the joint, causing mobility problems. Pain can increase with rest, but it can also increase with normal every day activity such as walking. The wearing down of the joint cartilage remains consistent in each form of arthritis. This essentially means a loss of mobility and an increase in chronic pain.

Joint Fluid Therapy
Joint fluid therapy works as the synovial fluid that is produced by the body to lubricate the joints, specifically the joint surfaces that have a layer of cartilage on top to provide a surface for the contacting joints to slide across each other. Many knee problems, and the aging progress can cause a loss of the body's ability to produce much of this viscous fluid. This fluid is vital for lubrication and protection of the joint's surfaces.

A lack of lubricating fluid can make any existing inflammation and knee pain worse. This is caused by the friction of joints surfaces that may lack a smooth surface of cartilage due to injury, or missing cartilage due to arthritis. A common and effective method for lubricating an affected knee joint is through the use of a highly purified sodium hyaluronate solution, which is delivered directly to the joint via injection. A hyaluronate solution like Supartz is typically given once a week for up to five weeks and is shown to provide great, long term pain relief from osteoarthritis. The best and most effective method of administration is what is known as a guided injection. This means that the injection is done using a digital imaging method like fluoroscopy or ultrasound to make sure that the solution is delivered exactly where it is supposed to go. Most medical insurance covers this procedure.

Supartz is administered quickly and does not require any surgical procedures. It is also delivered locally and works quickly to eliminate pain and discomfort. For more information on knee pain treatment, and osteoarthritis you can call: 212 627 6149.
Dr. Steven Shoshany on the Today show discussing back pain treatment options

Every morning the NYC local free papers like AM and Metro run ads for all kinds of medical services.
Specifically targeted are patients that have Sciatica (a set of symptoms that cause pain to shoot down the buttocks sometimes down the leg and into the feet).

Also targeted is Neck pain, Back Pain and Knee arthritis.
Some of these ads are run by pain management doctors that offer x-ray and ultrasound guided same day non-surgical procedures to relieve pain, others are by chiropractors offering treatments like non-surgical spinal decompression.
People in NYC are busy and work non stop and don't have time for pain so sometimes they resort to the quickest way to get out of pain and move on-BUT addressing the pain is just a portion of the puzzle.
What about the persons ergonomics, their posture spinal alignment and muscle tone?

If you suffer with Sciatica you want answers and not just a temporary patch.

What has been the most successful approach is when we combine disciplines.
the Medical doctor is here alongside the Chiropractor, Physical therapist, Massage therapist and Acupuncturist.
Working together toward one common goal.

I have practicing in NYC since 1999 and my vision from the very first day was to bring the disciplines together under one roof-(basically a one stop shop).

What this approach does is allow patient to multiple treatment methods and gives them choices.

Some patients have a fear of Chiropractors, but are ok with physical therapists.
Once patients enter our office and see the team dynamic and understand that Chiropractic is not only safe but super effective they open up to Chiropractic care.
If a patient has back pain or a herniated disc or suspects that they have a herniated disc, we have On-site X-rays, ultrasound to diagnosis problems.
We have also developed a excellent relationships with local MRI facilities so if a patient needs a MRI we can usually get them in same day.
Once we understand exactly what is going on we can then put together a effective treatment protocol.

The go to treatment for herniated discs is Spinal decompression.
Spinal decompression is non drug, non surgical and helps reduce nerve pressure and reduce disc herniations.

A good chiropractor will treat each patient as an individual. Usually a first chiropractic visit will include a chat about how the pain started, where its located, wher its a shooting pain, etc. There may also be an X-Ray involved to view the spine and pinpoint structural issues. Chiropractors can usually diagnose problems fairly quickly, since a herniated disc is an injury located in the spine and chiropractors are unrivaled in their ability to treat back pain, most people are easily diagnosed and quickly treated.

However, there are some cases where a patient may not be complaining of back pain, or they may be scared, unsure, or even in too much pain to clearly explain what's happening to them. Others might be suffering from sciatica and not know that the problem is rooted in their spine. A herniated disc can interfere with nerves in the spine can cause pain to travel down an appendage or manifest away from the origin of the problem. Sciatica is simply a symptom of interference with the sciatic nerve. Severe nerve impingement can even cause major reductions in motor function of limbs. One severe symptom is known as "foot drop"; this is when the patient is unable to flex their foot up and the foot simply hangs down. This is usually accompanied with the inability to walk properly or without assistance.

Fortunately even in their severe forms, things like "foot drop" are symptoms of an underlying issue, and will subside when the cause (usually a bulging or herniate disc) is properly treated for long term relief.

The best chiropractors have not just treated the routine cases of back pain, but also successfully treated the severe cases, where a patient is unable to walk or even sit without excruciating pain. Fortunately there are locations in NYC where you can find a qualified, experienced chiropractor. Dr. Steven Shoshany has seen virtually every case under the sun when it comes to back pain, and pain caused by herniated discs. A top tier chiropractor also utilizes the most advanced chiropractic medicine available today to diagnose, and customize treatment to each individual case.

Not every severe case of back pain will be treatable through non invasive, non surgical methods. In these cases your chiropractor can refer you to a good surgeon who has experience in dealing with your particular issue. Some patients might be in too much pain to undergo chiropractic treatment, in which case they can be referred to a pain management specialist. A pain management specialist can employ powerful injections that can relieve pain. Injections like those comprised of sodium hyaluronate can help relieve pain and allow the patient to undergo chiropractic care and physical therapy. Dr. Shoshany works with a pain management specialist, a physical therapist, and massage therapists, in house.

Long term pain relief will come from long term care with a chiropractor or doctor who has your overall wellbeing in mind. An individualized approach to treating patients is where a chiropractor can be indispensable. A good chiropractor can help people who are suffering from back pain feel better. A great chiropractor can help almost anyone who is in pain, and can employ a vast variety of cutting edge treatments to find and fix the root of the problem.

Sciatica is a frequent diagnosis and
extremely common occurrence; however, it is technically not a condition but
rather a set of symptoms. The difference
between sciatica and other types of lower back pain is in the fact that
sciatica is a direct consequence of trauma to the sciatic nerve, which is the
largest single nerve in the body. Other
types of back pain can originate elsewhere in the body under a number of
different conditions.

Sciatica originates in the hip/lower
back area and may progress down the buttocks, thighs, and legs, usually only
one side of the body. Cases where
sciatica is present on both sides are extremely rare. Patients experiencing sciatica usually
experience constant low back pain that can vary in intensity depending on the
severity of impingement on the sciatic nerve.
A number of factors can cause injury to the sciatic nerve, such as
trauma from a fall or accident, herniated discs, or a pinched nerve stemming
from poor posture, lack of physical activity, or unsafe heavy lifting.

When the sciatic nerve is
irritated, it emits a sensation that is usually felt in the form of sharp,
shooting pains. If the nerve is not
promptly relieved of the condition causing excessive pressure, this pain will
radiate down the length of the nerve and may become so severe as to impair the
patient’s normal range of motion and daily activities, including walking,
sitting, exercising, and working. The
best and most efficient way to correct sciatica is through chiropractic
adjustments to alleviate the sciatic nerve of disproportionate pressure and restore
natural alignment to the spine and discs.
Adjustments, as well as computer-assisted spinal decompression for more
complex cases of sciatica, are non-surgical, safe, and painless treatments that
are immediately effective in the vast majority of cases and do not require
additional recovery time. Surgery is
usually not recommended for the treatment of sciatica and is reserved for exceptionally
advanced cases where the patient would not respond to non-surgical therapies.

The honest answer is, in most cases, yes, it is possible to reverse the damage done to an intervertebral disc.

Some cases of back pain will result in back surgery, however back surgery isn't necessary for most disc herniations. In fact a lot of people have undiagnosed disc bulges in their back and don't even know it. Disc issues are usually brought to light when the disc bulges or herniates out enough to interfere with nerves in the back and the physical functions of the spine. Most often it is the nerves in the lumbar that has people concerned about their hobbies, job, lifestyle and future health. Lower back pain is very common, and its when this pain becomes chronic and finally increases that people finally seek out professional help.

A disc can heal from simple actions such as taking time off from strenuous physical activity, and increasing rest periods. Doctors often prescribe, rest, and pain medication to help relieve pain and to allow for the continuation of everyday tasks like work, errands, etc without the distraction of pain. This is the usual approach, rest and medication, however this can simply mask the pain, which is a symptom of an underlying issue, such as a bulging or herniated disc.

Fixing the problem for good, which means helping the disc heal by drawing the bulging material back in to the disc and restoring optimum back function would be the best route to take. Addressing the root cause of the problem is where a chiropractor that provides spinal decompression and specialty equipment such as the COX table can be invaluable.

Using chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression with the added versatility of the COX table, the body can be put in to the best possible state to heal itself from the inside, providing a long term solution.

New York City is one of the busiest urban
areas in the world; our non-stop lifestyle means it is easy to neglect taking
care of our health. When it comes to pain,
many busy New Yorkers will choose the easy route to numb the pain by ingesting
over-the-counter or prescription medication, or wait until the pain becomes
unbearable to seek treatment. This is,
however, a very dangerous approach considering the serious possible side
effects of prescription drugs and the fact that while they keep pain under
control, they do not address the condition that is causing it.

Adults in NYC are prone to
experiencing sciatica because they work long hours and take on many
activities. While those who engage in
regular physical exercise are at a lower risk, those with desk jobs as well as
jobs that involve heavy lifting and other taxing conditions exhibit the highest
incidence of sciatica-related pain.
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve (a large nerve that extends from
the lower back down each leg) is irritated by excessive pressure caused by
imbalances or subluxations in the lower back/hip area and the affected discs
press on the sciatic nerve. When the
sciatic nerve is impinged or inflamed, it sends painful signals down the buttock
and leg. If not treated promptly, the
condition will worsen and has the potential of causing severe pain that can
render the patient immobile and cause irreversible nerve damage in the most
extreme cases. Our NYC physical
rehabilitation and pain management facility has treated patients who have had
to resort to using canes and wheelchairs in order to walk because of the great
deal of pain they were experiencing due to sciatica.

The good news is sciatica is a common
and treatable condition and its ensuing damage on surrounding soft tissue and
nerves is usually reversible. Our NYC
facility offers the latest in non-surgical treatments for sciatica and provides
customized treatment plans that ensure pain relief and long-term results in a
short period of time and in the majority of cases without the additional aid of
painkillers. Our treatment protocols
include a personalized combination of manual adjustments, spinal decompression, physical therapy, and can be enhanced with our available massage
therapy and acupuncture treatments for relaxation and pain relief. Every treatment regime begins with a
consultation and evaluation with our doctors to determine the exact cause of
pain. Patients suffering from low-back,
hip or leg pain are welcome to visit us for a consultation and a custom-tailored
pain relief plan by our team of experts.

Steve Shoshany is a New York Chiropractor. This is a journal of the day to day happenings of a New York Chiropractor.

Over
the years, I have helped expectant mothers in NYC to better enjoy their
pregnancy and reap the benefits of chiropractic, a safe and natural approach to
health maintenance, which is essential during the prenatal period, a time when
the female body sustains added trauma and stress.

Without
the use of drugs or surgery, adjustments performed by a chiropractor can provide relief to women
enduring the pain and discomfort brought on by the physical modifications and compensations that
occur during pregnancy. A common
ailment among pregnant women is pain in the lower back area, which may be caused by
subluxations in the spine as the center of gravity shifts towards the front of
the pelvis, increasing the back’s natural curvature and placing added pressure
on spinal discs and joints. This extra
pressure can negatively affect the nervous system by compressing and irritating
nerves, causing chronic pain that may worsen if left untreated. With the use of non-invasive spinal
decompression treatments, both manual and computer-assisted, my team and I are
able to safely and effectively restore alignment and eliminate back pain that
is common in expectant mothers.

Optimum
health during pregnancy translates to a lower risk of delivery complications as
well as increased comfort and ease during labor and delivery. Through careful and thorough examination,
which is safe for both mother and baby, we are able to detect and correct
pelvic misalignments that may reduce the available space for the child to
develop and move into the correct position for birth; in some cases if the baby is unable to
reach the proper position, an emergency cesarean section is usually
required. Recent studies show that
mothers who receive adjustments during pregnancy also experience decreased
labor times; by up to 24% for first-time mothers and up to 39% for multiparous
patients.

In
addition to chiropractic adjustments, which are safe, effective, and painless,
our NYC physical therapy facility also offers customized physical
therapy, prenatal massage therapy, and acupuncture treatments to ensure
expectant mothers have a truly comfortable pregnancy and are prepared for
birth. Patients engage in
custom-tailored safe exercises to prevent muscular injuries and are offered
prenatal massages and acupuncture sessions for muscular relief. Expectant mothers in NYC are welcome to

Many Americans, approximately 31
million according to the American Chiropractic Association, are currently suffering from some form of back pain. As common as this condition is, it
can become a serious problem if left untreated, despite the fact that most
cases of back pain are treatable.
Especially in cities with busy lifestyles such as NYC, back pain
sufferers may turn to quick fixes such as over-the-counter or prescription medication
to keep their back pain under control.
While medication is able to alleviate the sensation of pain, this is a
temporary solution that does not correct the root cause of pain and should not
be used as a long-term treatment due to its serious possible side effects,
which include severe health complications and even death.

Patients suffering from any degree of
back pain in NYC should consider chiropractic adjustments as the best treatment
option to find and correct any imbalances in the spine that may be disrupting
proper disc, nerve, and tissue function and therefore causing pain. As a practicing chiropractor in NYC for over
15 years, I have specialized in non-surgical back pain relief and have
successfully treated patients with varying degrees of back pain, including
thoracic pain, cervical pain, lumbar pain, and sacral pain. In many instances, patients with the most
severe symptoms had allowed minor aches to progress for too long (often under
the numbing effects of medication), thinking the problem would improve on its
own.

Chiropractic is recommended as a safe
and effective treatment for back pain, providing long-term relief without
side-effects or downtime. In recent
months, it has been reported that some insurance companies are requesting that
patients consult with a chiropractor before considering surgical treatments for
back pain, as chiropractic adjustments are safer and cost-effective, require
minimal post-treatment maintenance, and do not disrupt the patient’s normal activities
or lifestyle. Chiropractic is safe for
patients of all ages – whether infants, adults, or elderly – and will successfully
eliminate back pain in the vast majority of cases without the need for drugs or
surgical procedures.

In addition to traditional
chiropractic adjustments, the team of doctors in our NYC physical
rehabilitation center offers the latest in non-surgical spinal decompression
(with the DRX 9000 device), Active Release Techniques® (ART), The Pettibon
System®, Chiropractic Biophysics®, and more.

obtain long-term back pain relief should visit us to learn about our
non-surgical treatment protocols as well as complementary physical therapy,
massage therapy, pain management, and acupuncture therapies available. You can reach out and get more help and information via www.drshoshany.com or by calling: 212-645-8151.

Steve Shoshany is a New York Chiropractor.

Dr. Steven Shoshany, one of Manhattan’s top chiropractors and head
of chiropractic at Living Well Medical, is pleased to offer a long-term solution
to New Yorkers living with persistently troublesome knee and shoulder
pain. The City’s non-stop active
lifestyle can easily take a toll on joint health. Pain is a certain indicator of disruption of
normal bodily functions; when the pain is long-lasting or incessant (even if it
is not disabling), it is a sign of a more serious underlying problem, which can
worsen and have dangerous repercussions if left untreated.

Many adults will turn
to over-the-counter or prescription medications as a quick and easy way to
manage their pain. In the case of
chronic discomfort, this is an extremely dangerous approach, as pain
medications are not meant to treat health issues, but only numb the sensation
of pain. Untreated conditions will
continue to progress and worsen even under the anesthetic effects of
medication. Additionally, long-term use
of painkillers can result in severe complications such as liver failure, heart
attack, stroke, blood clots, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, stomach ulcers, and
death.

"Prescription drugs are now the biggest cause of fatal drug overdoses" _USA Today

Knee pain can be an
indicator of a serious issue, regardless of its severity. Nerves that provide sensation to the knee
also do the same for the hip, leg, and ankle, which is why knee pain can be
caused by a problem in these areas, such as a pinched nerve, misalignment, or
undiagnosed injury. New Yorkers do a
fair amount of walking, running, and standing in an average day, which is why
keeping knees in optimal health is important,
as they provide support to the entire body.

Shoulder pain burdens
countless New Yorkers, particularly women on-the-go who resort to carrying
large, heavy bags, placing excessive weight on their shoulders, which in turn
causes painful injuries to the area. Frequent trauma to the shoulder area can
result in degenerative disc disease as it extends to the neck and spine, as
well as disc herniation, spinal imbalances, painful pinched nerves and soft
tissue damage. If left untreated,
chronic shoulder pain can have crippling effects on posture, mobility and normal
bodily functions.

Along with Chiropractic treatment Dr. Shoshany also includes a biomechanics assessment to
determine and correct the root cause of the pain, combined with a
custom-designed physical therapy and rehabilitation program by an in house team of expert doctors to rectify the existing damage and
prevent future injury. Dr.
Shoshany also offers knee braces, kinesio taping, and a wide range of
additional tools to assist in prompt recovery and reduce or eliminate downtime. He is also a renowned expert in his field and is regularly invited to speak about his profession and how it can help a wide variety of painful conditions. He recently made his second appearance on the Dr. Oz show.

Steve Shoshany is a New York Chiropractor.

Who Can Be Helped by Chiropractic?

From years of hands on Chiropractic experience, patient feedback, and what has been shown in several major studies, almost anyone can benefit from visiting a good Chiropractor. When is comes to back pain, there isn't much else that has been shown to be just as effective as the traditional approach to pain relief, which has side-effects since a large part of the pain relief relies on medication, and in many cases, strong prescription medication. From athletes to office workers, anyone suffering from chronic, or acute back pain can benefit greatly from non-invasive non-surgical Chiropractic care.

These are the top-three types of
chiropractic patients

In my 15 years of practice as a
chiropractor in New York City, I have helped countless patients get rid of
pain, ranging from mild to immobilizing, and improve their overall health and
quality of life. I have treated patients
of many different age groups and backgrounds, and have come to the conclusion
that almost all of them fall within 3 categories of people who benefit from
chiropractic. Patients who seek out
chiropractic treatment are part of the following groups:

People who suffer from chronic pain.

Many of my patients have been living with
pain for long periods of time, and usually assumed it would go away on its own. Persistent pain can get in the way of daily
activities (such as work, exercise, recreation, family life, etc.) and might
cause some to turn to painkillers or other temporary relief methods. Those looking for relief without resorting to
drugs or back surgery, as well as those who are dissatisfied with short-term pain
relief, seek chiropractic treatment in hopes of achieving a pain-free life.

People who really want to know the root cause of their pain.

Patients who suffer from chronic or
occasional pain often times want to learn why and how their problem came
about. These patients want to take the
time to meet with an expert in order to gather as much knowledge about their
bodies as possible and understand the reasons behind their symptoms while finding
the root cause of their condition. In
addition to treating the resulting pain, they want to eradicate the base
problem and learn how to avoid future injuries by becoming skilled at
understanding the workings of their bodies and how chiropractic can help them
stay healthy and pain-free.

People who enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

I also see many patients who are looking to
prevent pain and injuries, rather than treat an existing condition. These patients are well-versed in the
benefits of chiropractic and how regular adjustments can assist in attaining
optimum health. These patients want to
give their bodies the best possible conditions for good health and well-being. They incorporate chiropractic as part of a
healthy standard of living that typically also includes regular exercise and proper
nutrition. These patients want to take
an extra step and ensure they will feel and look their best and be less susceptible to future injury as well.

Chiropractic is a safe,
effective, powerful tool against pain, both as a holistic treatment and as a valuable
preventive measure. Anyone who might be
part of the above groups will certainly benefit from the pain-relieving
properties of chiropractic treatment as well as its importance in achieving and
maintaining overall health and wellness.

Dr Shoshany was also asked to talk about how he treats his patients who are suffering from various forms of neck and back pain.

Dr. Oz has been very open to treating pain using different techniques and he first invited Dr. Shoshany to be on his show following the publishing of a study that found chiropractic care to be just as effective for relieving lower back pain as traditional care, such as prescription pain medication. On his first guest appearance Dr. Shoshany was asked to explain the principles behind his treatment methods and how he addresses the root cause of the problem as a chiropractor.

Dr Shoshany is renowned for his non surgical, non invasive approach. Using an individualized approach to helping patients get out of pain, he uses the latest technology, diagnostic techniques, along with alternative approaches like acupuncture. He was been providing non-surgical spinal decompression in the NYC area for years, and has helped hundreds of patients who were suffering from chronic back pain and sciatica. His all encompassing approach has proven very effective, even for people who have been unable to get successful treatment for many years.

On his second appearance on the Dr. Oz show Dr. Shoshany was once again asked to perform a live chiropractic adjustment on an audience member suffering from chronic back pain. Dr. Oz spoke about how research has shown that chiropractic care is safe and is very effective in treating back pain. Dr. Shoshany adjusted the patient from Dr. Oz's audience in the mid and upper thoracic spine.

"Its great that Dr.Oz is talking more and more about chiropractic and long term fixes for painful conditions rather than just telling people to take pain medication. He's a very respected doctor, and he is really trying to get people to address the cause of their pain and discomfort, rather than push a product or medication to mask symptoms." _Dr.Shoshany

His appearance on the Dr. Oz show exposed so many people to how simple, and safe chiropractic treatment can be. Dr. Shoshany is very excited by the spotlight once again turning to chiropractors through such a well known TV show. He continues to improve his practice by adding more treatment protocols and continues to treat people suffering from neck and back pain. The show will air, this Wednesday February 8th, 2011.
Steve Shoshany is a New York Chiropractor. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and it travels from the lumbar spine all the way down to the foot. This can easily confuse people in to thinking that their issue lies in the hamstring or lower down the limb.

A common cause of sciatica can be pressure on the sciatic nerve from a protruded, herniated, or bulging disc. Other causes aside form issues with the intervertebral disc can range from spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. The diagnosis is usually a radiculopathy, which means that there is pressure and/or irritation on the root of the nerve. Pain can manifest lower down the leg, and in to the foot depending on which part of the sciatic nerve is affected.

For some people the pain can be fairly severe and debilitating, while other people may have infrequent pain and irritation which may only cause minor discomfort. Still many people have one of more herniated or bulging discs that remain undiagnosed because they may not be interfering with nerve activity. Pain that is infrequent or light can quickly progress to chronic pain and numbness, so it is important to get checked out sooner rather than later.

Some symptoms that might require immediate attention:

Incontinence of the bowels or the bladder

A loss of sensation or progressing weakness of the legs

If you are constantly weak there may be damage to the nerve, and might require surgical intervention, so it is important to seek out care immediately

Pain in both legs should also be dealt with immediately by notifying your doctor

Sciatica is not a Diagnosis
Its important to remember that sciatica is a symptom and not a diagnosis, it simply indicates that there is pain down the leg due to impingement or compression of the sciatic nerve. Furthermore what determines the cause of the compression is a clinical diagnosis, the impingement isn't always in the same location or the type of compression.

Most cases of sciatica require no surgical intervention and can be dealt with in 6 to 12 weeks with proper care and monitoring by a doctor.

If the sciatica does not improve with rest and time there are various options for treatment available.

Medications:
Over the counter (OTC) medication or prescription medication from your doctor can help reduce inflammation and pain, inflammation being a common cause of pain.

Chiropractic Care:
Chiropractors specialize in treating problems and disorders of the lower back such as sciatica, and along with manual therapy like adjustments, they offer techniques like Spinal Decompression, the Cox technique, Active Release Techniques (ART), Cold Laser therapy, and Kinesio Taping.

Physical Therapy:
A physical therapist can design a regimen of specific strengthening and stretching exercises to help alleviate sciatica pain, and keep if from coming back in the long term. Strengthening the muscles of the lower back and abdominals, the LPHC, or Lumbo Pelvic Hip Complex which is involved in virtually all movement of the body.

As an integrated medical practice in New York City Living Well Medical offers care from medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, massage therapists, and a pain management specialist, all under the same roof. Free consultations are also available through email or over the phone.

All the running around, and shopping, checking out the night life in SOHO or the Meatpacking district, taking in the sights in mid town, and checking out the tree at Rockefeller Center, can lead to a lot of walking around and time spent cramped up on the subway. We see a lot of patients from out of town and overseas and often come on on weekend to help them feel better and get out of pain. Always make sure that you are getting plenty of sleep and if you do experience pain see a doctor sooner rather than later.

Travel
Many of us will be doing some traveling for the holidays, weather its over Thanksgiving or Christmas people want to be with their families and spend time sitting around doing nothing. Seeing loved ones often involves being getting on a plane and spending some time being absolutely miserable, especially during the travel season.

Airplane seats are designed to be soft and mushy and have those adjustable head rests that fold in from either side. Unfortunately they do not have a lumbar support curve and the head rests stick out so far it makes the seat concave and forces you to round your back. So make it a point to try and recline the seat as often as possible, and when you get up to go to the bathroom take a minute to stretch and loosen up for back a bit. After getting off the plane its would be a great idea to go see a massage therapist to help reduce the chance of developing chronic pain.
One of the products we recommend for people that travel or have to sit for long periods of time is the Tush Cush, and it really helps alleviate stress on the back. We always keep it in stock at our chiropractic, physical therapy and pain management center.

Luggage
Its a bit surprising but a lot of people hurt themselves at the baggage claim. After a long flight bending and reaching down to grab heavy luggage can end up hurting you. The overhead storage bins can also cause injury to the lower back or shoulders, especially for people with a weak rotator cuff or other joint issues.

Let a flight attendant help you with your bag when getting them down form the overhead bin if you know you might hurt yourself, and at the baggage claim tip one of the attendants to pick up and carry your luggage out to a cab for you.

Some Helpful Tips
Unfortunately all of this holiday activity can quickly lead to some major issue like, chronic back or leg pain due to a herniated disc, or neck and arm pain. A herniated disc can cause Sciatica, a condition which can be painful enough to immobilize some people. Pain and tingling and numbness shooting down the leg can be a sign of a herniated or bulging disc impinging a nerve in the lumbar spine.
If you feel that your back is just sore or "tight" the aforementioned tip about seeing a massage therapist would be a great decision.

A bulging or herniated disc can be successfully treated without surgery using spinal decompression. Spinal decompression allows the intervertebral disc to heal itself naturally by alleviating pressure and letting the body's healing process take over to quickly help the patient recover.

As always pay attention to your posture, take time to rest, relax and recover. Strengthen weak muscles and stretch tight one, a good Physical Therapist will show you how. If you have back pain see a chiropractor or look in to spinal decompression if you have a herniated disc and are in severe pain.
No ones likes to take it easy, relax and do things slowly, taking time to look after yourself and make sure you're not running yourself in to the ground.

Every weekend you try to relax and make sure you let your body recover from the relentless beating that it takes throughout the week, but yet another week has passed, and your knees, or ankles, elbows or bask just continues to get worse.

Most people don't perform any maintenance work on themselves. Stretching, massage, cold therapy, foam rolling, etc are basic soft tissue recovery and adaptability activities but most people neglect them for years, and wonder why they are in constant pain. Even most athletes don't take time out to work on myofascial release and stretching and recovery techniques. Combine our hectic lifestyles with a lack of sleep and inconsistent exercise, and you have a recipe for injury and pain.

Leg Pain
The most common term used to describe a wide array of joint, tendon and ligament problems, and pains, lets take a look at what causes pain in the lower limbs and how you can take care of it fast. Leg pain can be caused by sprains, strains, tears, and overuse resulting in tendinitis, limited mobility, decreased athletic ability, weight gain due to inactivity and the associated health issues.

Sprains
Sprains and strains are not the same thing, most people use the terms interchangeably, but they are two separate things. A sprain is an injury to a ligament A sprain is an injury to a ligament. A ligament is thick and fibrous and it keeps the bones in your body connected together. Ligaments are A-Vascular which means that they have poor blood supply and do not heal quickly from injury.

Strains
The equivalent of a sprain to a tendon or muscle. A strain is tearing caused by over-stretching a muscle or tendon. A strain isn't just an athletic injury, they can occur during every day tasks, and are not limited to athletes. However athletes are at a greater risk to developing strains due to increased activity and the possibility of trauma to the muscle.

Tendinitis
Tendinitis is inflammation which can be accompanied by irritation and swelling caused by overuse of a particular joint through repetitive motion or stress. It can occur in any tendon in the body but is most commonly seen in the elbow, knees, shoulder/ rotator cuff, and the ankle.

Chiropractors have been treating athletes who suffer from sprains, strains and other acute or chronic injuries. Many athletes will swear by their chiropractor and the positive gains they have made while working with a good one. While NYC isn't usually on the top of the list for athletic in general, it does house one of the largest and best track and field facilities on the East Coast, and also has numerous amateur sports leagues, a large and very active running community, and a seemingly unlimited numbers of health clubs. If you're looking for a Chiropractor in NYC who has experience working with athletes and every day people alike, Dr. Steven Shoshany has a team of experts who use an integrated method to treat everyone and produce unparalleled results quickly and without hassle or a runaround. Over 21% of adults currently suffer from moderate to severe chronic (long term) pain. This pain is bad enough that it leads them to seeking help from a doctor, and some end up in emergency rooms, barely mobile from their pain having become so excruciating. Pain is the second most common reason that people visit doctors, and back pain is the most common reason cited for missing work days. Only illnesses like the cold cause more visits to the doctor's office. Still 40% of Americans who have visited a doctor have not found any relief for their pain.

In New York City we are at a higher risk for developing chronic, painful conditions due to our hectic lifestyles and non stop work schedules.

Living Well Medical has been treating patients suffering from pain from a variety of causes, weather they are athletes who have developed a chronic condition, or post surgical patients who are looking to get back to their daily routine by undergoing rehabilitative physical therapy. No one treats back pain, and the causes of chronic back pain better than Living Well Medical. The practice founded in 1999, has been treating people with herniated discs, bulging discs, and sciatica with an unparalleled success rate. The goal is to get you back on your feet as fast as possible and get you out of pain and help fit your rehabilitation and if necessary, pain management, to your lifestyle by providing expert care from leading specialists, all under one roof.

The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defines pain as:
An unpleasant sensory and/or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in term of such damage.

Pain is the last symptom of injury. You can have an injury without much pain at all, because pain is a neurological response to something being wrong in the body. A physical therapist can find other potential injuries or underlying causes that may lead to re-injury and cause more pain down the line. A team oriented, patient centered approach makes sure that the root cause of the problem (pain) is addressed, and not just simply covered up by medication.

Most people respond well to chiropractic care and physical therapy, but for those people that cant undergo such treatment Interventional Pain Management can help relieve pain by injecting powerful pain medications directly in to the spine, muscles, or nerves. Having all these specialists under one roof also cuts down the time a patient needs to spend on searching for doctors. This means more time getting care, and less time on the phone or computer.

Some patients will require that interventional pain management be started before undergoing physical therapy, but in most cases patients undergo pain management if they do not respond to physical therapy, chiropractic care and prescription medication. This powerful interventional procedure can be used in combination with chiropractic adjustments and other treatment modalities like the Graston Technique, or supportive taping in the form of Kinesio Taping for optimal results.

Living Well Medical also provides free in person and over the phone consultations and also accepts most insurance plans.
The limited range of motion, pain, the stress from knowing that its going to be something thats going to affect you throughout the day. Neck pain isn't only physically limiting, it can also have a huge effect on your self image, personal relationships, and job performance. Living in NYC is stressful, and most of us don't really sleep as much these days as we "crash" at the end of a long day, often in uncomfortable positions, with little regard for good sleep posture, or habits.

Sometimes neck pain is muscular and can easily be treated by NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs) and a quick visit to a doctor or chiropractor. Chronic neck pain, especially if its accompanied by tingling or numbness that radiates down the appendage can be a bit more difficult. In terms of the treatment time, and protocols required to treat neck pain that may originate, not in a muscle, but in the spine, it may take a few visits to see results.

As usual, avoidance is the key to staying pain free. If you don't want a chronic injury, work to make sure that you don't develop one.

STRETCH: Mobility, and a joint's ability to move through it fully, unrestricted by tight or underdeveloped muscles is a big part of staying pain free. Simply put, the more a joint can be manipulated without the soft tissue around it becoming stressed, therefore injured, the less likely it is to develop an injury.

STRENGTHEN: You should build up the muscles surround the site of an injury, or work to develop weaker muscles that may be overloaded, and underdeveloped. Some resistance training will go a long way towards helping make sure that your bones and muscles can deal with a lot of the punishment that a day in Manhattan hands out.

Pain in the Neck From an Irritated or Impinged Nerve.
A herniated or bulging disc in the spine can lead to a condition we all know, sciatica is what occurs when a nerve is irritated or impinged in the lower back and pain is felt shooting down the entire leg as a result. The same thing can happen in the cervical spine, a nerve can become impinged by a bulging intervertebral disc and lead to pain down the arm. This can sometimes feel like numbness, and in some cases it can become unbearable and leave the patient unable to go about their daily tasks.

Cervical Decompression:
The spine houses the all important central nervous system and bulges and herniations in the spinal discs can wreak havoc on the nerves and really destroy a person's quality of life. Just like lumbar decompression for pain in the lower back that radiates down the lower limbs, the cervical spine can also be decompressed, which allows the injured disc to heal much quicker, and allows for faster pain relief.
Neck Pain Can Easily be Treated by Cervical Spinal Decompression.
We have been providing spinal decompression for patients suffering with neck pain for many years now and the results are nothing short of impressive. Cervical decompression also happens to be even more effective and easier than lumbar decompression. Lumbar decompression is already highly lauded for its fast pain relief and has a very high patient satisfaction rate. So imagine just how easy and effective a cervical decompression session can be. Some patients even show immediate relief, although we stress finishing the prescribed course of treatment for longer term results.

We pride ourselves in offering a patented integrated approach to treatment. Our non surgical approach, non invasive approach is known for its unparalleled success. We use a multidisciplinary approach to tailor a treatment protocol for each patient, and constantly evaluate the results to provide the fastest treatments with the best results.
