· Robot pop stars gig for

the first time in Tokyo

Robots that can play musical instruments, or ‘mubots’, performed at the Tokyo Robot Exhibition in Oct 1997. A quartet of four mubots one on violin, one on violoncello and two on the recorder performed thirty pieces, from classical to popular music. There was also a guitar playing mubot called Wamoeba 2 at the exhibition.

· Music that comes

directly from the brain

Mozart’s 42^nd symphony was performed in April 1997, at a concert at the University of California in Santa Cruz, USA- but Mozart only composed 41 symphonies was the creation of an artificial intelligence program called Emi (Experiments in Musical Intelligence) designed by composer David Cope.

· Hyperinstruments play in

the futuristic Brain Opera

Tod Machover from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Media Lab has been designing and building ‘hyperinstruments’ electronically enhanced musical instruments since 1986. His clients have included British musician Peter Gabriel and classical cellist YO-YO Ma. He has also designed and composed The Brain Opera, an interactive composition which has been performed on the Internet and in various venues across the world. Each performance consists of two parts. The first is an introductory period in which the audience in the auditorium.

TECHNOLOGY

· New music can be written

with pocket-sized studios

German techno band Kraftwerk used portable synthesizers on stage as early as 1981. In the 1990s, musicians such as Bjork and Tricky use portable songwriters. Usually about the same size as a personal organizer, the two leasing models are Yamaha’s QY70 and Roland’s PMA-5. Both songwriters contain hundreds of sounds such as piano, drums, violins and effects such as reverb. They are also capable of multitrack music to computers.

· Compilation CDs could

be recorded at home

Philips expected to sell about 5 million CD recorders in 1998. The first generations of CD recorders were CD-R, which permitted once only recording onto a blank CD. But the second generation CD-Rewritable or CD-RW works like a tape cassette and can be recorded over more than once. CD-RWs rely on phase change technology. The discs are coated with a material which switches between crystalline and non-crystalline states when encountering a laser beam from the CD recorder.

· DIY music can be

played with a joystick

Japanese company Denshai Media released software in 1998 for Sega games consoles, which act as music sequencers, allowing the DIY musician to make their own music. It is operated with a joystick and comes with 11,714 pre-recorded sounds ranging from dance music, ska and soul, to classical music.
