Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

I have been been studying different forms of

art this summer with the goals

to eventually incorporate them into my encaustic work.

I have enjoyed exploring new avenues immensely , but it is fun

to return home and just explore in the the wax.

Todays video begins with just exploring with favorite color

palette . We have all had those times where we are away for a day or

week , or focused on other tasks and are excited to return and

paint but overwhelmed at what to do.

When this happens I say go with what you know. I get out

my favorite colors and just begin painting .

Texture can begin at any time in an encaustic painting .

You can begin with it in initial layers or add it at any time in any layer

of the painting.

It is so fun to explore different textures that can be achieved and built up

without ever even changing your brush !

More color and more texture can be built upon as you go,

fusing in between each additional layer .

I am so incredibly excited to be back on Wax on Wednesday’s with you !

The last three months have brought fear, sorrow , relief , thankfulness , joy , faith , family, friendship , and love . I am truly joyful to be back where I belong and grateful to be creating .

Our art path often follows our feelings . Influencing color and subject matter , a reflection of our waking dreams . Sometimes it is an accurate reflection . It can also be the exact opposite . Have you ever turned to paint and using bold, bright, happy ,colors when you were feeling the exact opposite ?

Art is therapy .

Art is Expression.

Art is healing .

We speak through it as artists whether it is a soft whisper ,or a loud scream .

This year my photography has dominated my creative focus for pretty obvious reasons. That of being on the precipice of becoming and empty nester, and capturing the last of youth as it transcends into what is beyond .

Now that I am able to begin painting again I am also focusing on translating some of those images into photo encaustic in some pretty different and interesting ways . This week some fun photo encaustic tips creating some color and beautiful textures with Stencil Girl Stencils .

I always use inkjet prints on Matte photo paper for photo encaustic.

I will list some fun papers to try out in the supply section below.

Gloss photos will not work for photo encaustic for several reasons.

First off the paper simply can't absorb the wax which is crucial aspect for any

encaustic substrate. The photo is also printed directly on top of the surface

and can't be heated or scraped like an inkjet matte photo can. If you are

looking at papers just remember if it is shiny and reflective it is not absorbent.

Please note that the Hahnemuhle is a beautiful paper but is also on the high end of the photo papers . You may be able to possibly find it cheaper at brick and mortar art store (not Michaels ). Check prices at Blicks etc just to make sure .

Wax on Wednesdays Some Shellac Play !

Happy Wax on Wednesdays!

This week I thought it would be fun to play with some different effects

that are possible with shellac burn in an abstract landscape.

Shellac can burn fast or slow depending on the dry times. It

also depends on the heat application and the amount of heat that is

applied.

I tinted some clear shellac with Pearl Ex Antique bronze to add some

fun earthy darks into the landscape.

When I am preparing to do a landscape I always get my favorite

colors out in multiple mediums to have close buy. I show some R an F pigment sticks that

are my favorite colors for landscapes in the video but I don't end up

using them in this week's process :)

This is a fun way to explore the different effects that shellac

can have on the encaustic wax, and the pigments.

The video is a sped up process , but I allow several hours or even over night

for each layer of shellac to dry :)

Wax on Wednesdays Off the Panel #3 Will It Work ? Testing Potential Encaustic Substrates

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

The wood panel is a perfect surface for encaustic being both

rigid and porous , but there are so many potential

substrates that can also be used for encaustic that can often be further

manipulated into unique forms and sculptures .

This week in the final week of the "Off the Panel" series, I am sharing

how I go about testing potential substrates

for encaustic.

Once these objects are tested to see that the wax will

absorb nicely , I also like to look for items that are sturdy

but can potentially be manipulated into other shapes .

These paper mache seed starter cups are perfect for

an absolutely endless number of forms that can be created from them.

These encaustic forms

were created from the seed pod cups,

oil paint sticks, Panpastels

and waxed linen thread .

Wax on Wednesdays Painted Encaustic Vessels Part 2

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

This week is part 2 of the painting encaustic vessel bowls

project featuring some mache based bowls

like the ones that were created in

"Encausticology Wax and Symbolism " online

workshop.

As promised for those who are already in the workshop, I

changed it up a bit an painted them in a different

way than we did in the workshop lessons!

There are so many different approaches, mediums, and paths that can be

taken and explored with these vessel form substrates. This week is but one

fun option:)

I used a tinted shellac with these along with the other pigments.

Because I was using shellac, I only used a heat gun with this

process an not my trusty Iwatani torch

because the substrate is paper based.

They also have 4 coats of medium on each bowl as shown in part 1

and if I feel the wax is thinning on the sides I add one or 2 more coats of medium

so that the base is never exposed.

These 3 bowls took approximately one week to complete in the painting stage.

But Shari why would it take

so long when encaustic dries almost instantly ?

Ah well, unfortunately shellac dries at the normal rate

that it takes to dry shellac :)

If this is a thin bit it could take hours, if more is added it could take 24 hours.

If it is not allowed to set up in the layers it can become a goopy mess.

This method takes

a little bit of patience but I love the look of the

tinted shellac built up in the thin layers of wax !

Wax on Wednesdays Encaustic Painting Paper Mache Bowl Vessels

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

This week working 3 dimensionally on some encaustic vessels.

These vessels are some of my paper mâché bowls that are

dried and ready to be painted with encaustic.

Paper mâché is the perfect substrate for encaustic because it is

sturdy, absorbant , and accepts the wax beautifully in a HUGE

variety of ways .

Any pigments that are used in painting with encaustic on panel

can be used on these forms.

This week I am prepping these bowls for painting. They are beautiful with

just translucent layers of wax and can be left just like this.

Next week I will be adding some pigments to them in

part 2 of this month's series.

Fluid Fridays ! Reverse String Pull Acrylic Pour

This week going the opposite direction palette wise with some

very warm oranges and black background.

My initial plan was to create some vertical stripes in the pour .

Once I had found that I did not have enough paint on the canvas to keep the

stripes vertical , I had to rethink the plan.

Fluid art does not allow for days of stepping back and pondering your next step, but

you can avert your eyes for several minutes , and step back and look at what is

going on .

what is working ?

what is not?

what are the options for movement ? (this takes a lot of pours under your belt to predict and even then it's never 100% predictable. )

My solution this week was to separate the stripes with a bit more of the negative space in a

reverse string pull ( or at least that is what I call it for my own process)

This week getting back to the mini series I had promised a while back for

In the video I say that I used Epson printer . I have had many Epson Photo printers over the years and have loved them but this particular one is a Canon Photo.

I noticed as of this posting it has significantly dropped in price Woot !

Happy Fluid Fridays Balloon Smash !

Happy Fluid Fridays !

I have been wanting to try the balloon dip, dab, smash , I have heard it called several things. I was most interested in using it as a mark making tool in the paint.

I also did this for this week's Wax on Wednesdays to see how it would transfer . For right now I will have to say it did not transfer over as well as I would have hoped . However I am leaving the experiment open ended to try again with perhaps a different approach with encaustic later on.

The acrylic pour with the balloon on the other hand I absolutely LOVED ! It creates a lovely vein , leafy affect . I used this much more as a mark making tool than a "dip" to bring out colors.

I am super excited about exploring these marks further with different colors etc. I was also in love with the organic look of the pour vs the balloon marks and I think that is because the marks are so subtle and soft . I don't think bold marks and pours blend together well but this transition seemed natural and organic to me.

Wax on Wednesdays What Would Happen If .. ?

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

A lot of my practice with encaustic is exploring the possibilities .

What is possible with this wonderful medium?

What is it capable of .

When exploring these pathways sometimes

I am met with what feels like a wall.

It can't do that .

But a lot of times

I also think that if I take a few steps back and figure out how

to approach the same question later on in a different way

it may be possible, I just haven't approached it in the right way yet .

There are a lot of Wax on Wednesdays videos now, well over 100.

I thought it would be fun to introduce a new segment for 2019

"What would happen if ... ?"

Even I don't know, it is an all new question. Not all will come out the way they were planned , but they will all come out to something as there are no mistakes in encaustic !

This week I wanted to try a technique that I have been working with

in acrylic pours with a balloon dip. It created a beautiful leafy vain sort of mark and

wanted to see if it would transfer over in wax when the wax was in a fluid state.

Happy Fluid Fridays ! Trying Out a Dipped Acrylic Pour

Happy Fluid Fridays !

It has been a while for a Fluid Fridays post and I have been wanting to experiment with "dipped pours" so I thought I would film the first one and bring you along with me for the experiment!

Ms. Reagan's prediction was a marbled paper look which wasn't far off. I wanted to explore paint thickness for the dipping process . I was worried about "smooshing " the paint with the canvas , but ended up pretty happy with the result even when smooshed.

The outcome ?

I am excited to try this again manipulating the paint further with different tools before dipping to explore some more pattern. Also to try a slightly thinner paint and see how that goes.

Usually if I have lot's of "what if ? " variable questions after an experiment I consider it a pretty good initial success.

Wax on Wednesdays Something Different Resin String Pour and Resin Collage !

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

So sorry for being absent last week we were out of town on some college visits with

Ms. Reagan. This year is exciting but going much much too quickly at the same time.

As you look to see what is on the horizon for you and your future ,

I stand in awe at what is before me .

This week a fun 2 part video project to show what I have been working on

using resin pour paintings as my base .

In the first video I am doing a super fun string pull with resin and pigments. I have done many of these

with acrylic pours on canvas and board but this was the first string pull I had done with

resin .

String pulls another fun way to manipulate color and form in a fluid painting .

Collage has been a big draw for me again and I am enjoying exploring it

in a more contemporary style . It is also an exciting process to be creating

all of the collage materials using my own photography and hand painted papers. The excitement of

exploring something so familiar but in all new directions has me completely hooked !

Have you ever come back to a medium or project years later with all of the comforting familiarity

of material and process, but with an all new sense of adventure and new ideas ?

In this second video I show some of the ways I have been incorporating collage in some unexpected places :)

A Little Something Different !

Happy Wax on Wednesdays!

Every once in a while it is fun to explore a little something different.

Exploring different pathways often leads to new revelations in your own art

practice. New little shifts and short journeys provide a fresh look at your approach similar to

having those "fresh eyes" on a painting.

Not that we will be gone for long and stray off of our path, but I do approve

of the "playing is learning" theory and believe it promotes new

avenues in your art approach.

Your relationship with your art

is like any other as time goes on you want to not only work at that

relationship but also keep it fresh and exciting!

For February I thought it would be fun to do a little

something different each week for Wax on Wednesdays.

This week , let's see the differences in an encaustic finish for

collage and a resin finish.

I did not go over this point in the video but I do not seal my encaustic collage

with the matte medium first because it is an acrylic based product that is making the paper

'Not absorbent" so that the resin can't get in and saturate it . If I apply encaustic over that non absorbent surface it cannot absorb into the paper layers and has no reason

to stay, and most likely will eventually separate from the acrylic sealed surface.

Wax on Wednesdays Encaustic Painting Collage Finish

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

Encaustic medium can be used as a final finish for several mediums .

It is an especially fun finish for collage pieces!

There are many ways to approach this as usual with encaustic.

Light weight papers can be incorporated into the wax in layers as you paint.

Heavier paper and objects should be secured down prior to adding encaustic.

If you are using a variety of paper thicknesses it may be best to adhere the design to the board first with an acid free adhesive such as "Yes" paste and then use clear encaustic medium as a final finish.

Encaustic is hard to photograph and encaustic collage is even harder once it has been polished :)
I tried multiple angles of the finished piece and none of them looked as is does in person. Trust me you will love the beautiful way the wax absorbs the papers!

Further manipulation is always an option after adding the clear medium. The possibilities for many fun layers of incising adding more paint and color , texture , etc are all exciting options!

By securing the collage down to the substrate first , you know that you have a permanent bond

with no possibilities of lifting with those heavier papers.

I convert the photo to black and white so that I get a really high contrast and can see

all of the light and dark areas . This is a super fun way to collage using vintage

papers from old first readers, magazines , text etc as your highlights and shadows in the image.

Wax on Wednesdays Multiple Layer Image Transfers !

What is more fun than image transfers on an encaustic surface?

Multiple layers of image transfers !

The encaustic surface is unique in that you can create

multiple layers of image transfers by

carefully incorporating layers of clear medium in between.

This also creates a beautiful depth to the images .

Once you get the hang of this technique infinite layers of

transfers are possible!

I got the images for this piece from

The Graphics Fairy

Graphics Fairy has many beautiful images that are copyright free and

you can also become a member. In some cases such as this

French script she has even provided an image that is already reversed

in a mirror image so that when it is transferred on the text is going the right way :)

Here is a direct link to the 2 images I used :

I recommend simple images if this is your very first transfer on wax.

This script can easily be filled in with some India ink if a spot

is missed in the transfer.

Also make sure and reverse any images that have text so that they will read correctly
when transferred on to the encaustic surface. I did not notice the #20 on the bird cage
image and forgot to reverse it in the video :)

I am listing my printer in the supplies I used this week because I get asked ALOT what

Wax on Wednesdays Mark Making Part 3 India Inks

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

This is week 3 of the mark making on encaustic surface series.

Today using this Kemper Fluid writer to create some marks with India ink.

It looks just like a tjanting tool but says that it is made for fluid pigments such as inks , and acrylic, and china paint.

I am always looking for tools both conventional and otherwise to

create interesting and especially fine lines on the encaustic

surface .

This tool claimed that it would not run or leak and would in fact hold

the liquid pigment (inks , acrylics , etc ) until it was touched to

the substrate.

Well, that is usually fine on an absorbent paper but what

about on a non porous encaustic surface ?

The big challenges with writing tools are the non porous surface

are beading from the inks or other pigments, and fluidity in the line

while on the wax.

This tool was used on completely cooled boards that

had not been heated in a few days. However their will

still be some build up of wax on the nib which

will have to be cleaned off with a paper towel and possibly

the enclosed needle for unclogging included with the tool.

Overall I was quite happy with the tool , and am looking forward

to using it on some larger pieces.

Wax on Wednesdays Mark Making Week 2 !

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

This week using a heated stylus tool with several different bits that can be changed out for fun effects in the wax!

This tool can be used not only to incise line into the encaustic surface , but
also to apply paint onto the wax . The struggle was achieving
uniformity in the marks by adjusting the temperature of the tool so that the
wax was not too drippy .

The same was true for incising line and also the stamping bits. If the tool is too
hot the line in the wax will collapse in on itself essentially defeating the purpose.

This top tool on the list is the one I used in the video . I have had it forever and when I looked on the original insert it is a wood burning tool . There are most likely many wood burning tools out there that would work very similar to this one . The only thing I would strongly recommend is a temp dial so that you can adjust the temp according to your needs .

I have also listed some other heat stylus tools that I found here on the supply list. I have not used every single one on the list but just added them for fun . The taking iron I do use often for collage and added it as a heated tool to use for encaustic .

The holiday art walk at Essex Studios was super fun !

Saturday we did pours in the studio with Ms. Reagan at the demo table.
Looking forward to the Spring Art Walk in 2019.

We had finished enough tiles to create a "Pour Tree"

for the art walk :)

Wax on Wednesdays Renew, Recycle, Refresh, Repaint!

One of the many wonderful things about encaustic is the ability for the wax to be refreshed and reactivated . This week I took a painting done slightly over a year ago (Wax on Wednesday November 17, 2017) , and using the wax already on the board to create a new painting.

This was one of the largest that I had done on camera at 24x24". It has been curing and hardening for over a year now , but by reheating and reactivating the wax already on the board , I can continue to build on that painting using that wax !

I am also continuing to add layers of clear medium that are fused and bonded to the old layers as something completely new is created.

It is true that encaustic painting can get pricey , but there is no waisting !

Happy Wax on Wednesdays with a Bonus Stencilgirl Encaustic Video !

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

Todays video is a 12x12 abstract landscape really playing with color , light , and dark. To add a bit of fun in the horizon line , I am adding some laser print copies of trees .

Toner based images are needed for this type of image transfer onto the encaustic surface. I have a Samsung laser printer that has worked wonderfully for me for the last few years for this purpose.

If you are going to a copy center to print out your images , the older the copy machine the better .

Unfortunately ink jet prints will not work for this technique. This is because the toner based images leave the ink on top of the surface of the paper making it easy to transfer that ink off of the paper and onto another surface such as encaustic . The ink jet embeds the ink into the sheet of paper.

Surprise Bonus to Share !

This week we have a bonus video !

StencilGirl® asked me to do a video a while back and I was excited because what could be more fun than encaustic and stencils ! I do work with Stencilgirl stencils when I am working with encaustic because they are pretty durable and can withstand a bit of heat (which is good when cleaning the wax off ) .

I also work stencils into my paintings as background marks , and patterns, and even to add textures. Because these stencils are all designed by different artists I find that there are a lot of stencils in the line that fit the bill as just what I need . The kind that you can use all 4 corners of the same stencil and get a completely different variation , and result . That is my kind of tool .

Wax on Wednesdays Encaustic Painting Adding Dramatic Textures !

Adding dramatic textures in encaustic can be quite fun and

can be achieved with a wide variety of homemade tools

and household odds and ends.

Today's textures are from dollar store shelf liner and an inexpensive

rubber trivet that has become one of my favorite mark, pattern,

and texture making finds !

Mix different textures for a more dramatic affect!

In todays video I show how to add dramatic texture affects and then

blend them together while fusing for a more cohesive look.

Top that off with a fun tree line toner transfer and you have a

fairly quick and fun landscape !

This week another Remelt , Recycle , Reuse project !

One of the most wonderful qualities of encaustic painting is the ability

to remelt and reuse the wax on a previous painting or practice

board and create a new painting.

This week I am using technique boards from a previous workshop .

I like a couple of the elements on the boards and will let

a hint here or there shine through in the new work.

These are 6x6 quick studies or warm up boards I used

each day in the studio for exploring techniques, or working out

a larger painting.

I am still keeping this landscape exercise quick and loose by

using my fingers as the tools . These finger paintings

are done by adding oil paint in the form of pigment sticks

to create a new composition.

Wax on Wednesdays Fall Play Transfers with R and F Pigment Sticks and Gel Press

Using natural forms for impressions and transfers onto the encaustic surface can

be so addicting !

This week let's try a transfer method using a Gel Press plate

and some R and F Pigment sticks.

I am using black over a red and white prepared encaustic surface. To me the prints

in black look so much like the old antique illustrations that I am fond of that it is

really an enjoyable process.

The excess pigment is blotted up with a piece of copy paper so that

I end up with a lovely silhouette print of the leaf on paper that I can later

add encaustic to . Maybe I will show what I do with those

in another Wax on Wednesdays video.

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !

Now that everything is turning into the beautiful colors of fall,

I thought it would be fun to create beautiful Fall leaves impressed into the wax surface.

This works the best if you use green leaves that have not yet turned and dried . (much easier to get them back out of the wax ! :)

After they leave their impression in the wax surface , it can be colored and blended into any color palette you like with Panpastels .

Make sure an place the leaf vein side down when you impress it into the encaustic wax for the best impression.

So excited !

Breaks are wonderful for coming back with a fresh eyes and enthusiasm .

This week I am super excited to kick off a 4 part series with tips

on photo encaustic!

There is so much you can do with photographic imagery and

encaustic that I often think of it almost as an entirely different art form from

regular encaustic painting. The very first workshop in the "Encausticology Workshop" series

is actually devoted to this art of working with imagery and encaustic wax.

What can you do ?

Well , you can use it strictly as a finish after mounting your image

giving you image a beautiful luminously dreamy effect, and it also

acts as a final finish that of course can be buffed to a lacquer like shine or

left a lovely matte.

You can also transfer imagery directly on to the fused encaustic surface

and piece together multiple images to form your own story.

Using pigments to recolor a black and white image or completely

change a background in a color image is another awesome possibility with photo encaustic!
The different effects you can create with just one photo are endless !!!!

The next few weeks of Wax on Wednesdays
will feature some of my studio tips and tricks for having
fun with photo encaustic !
