Two Simple DIY Cranberry Garlands

These two garlands are so simple! Promise. And you just might have all ingredients in your home, garage or garden.

The first one up is popcorn and whole cranberries. This was actually an activity we did during an Advent devotional last week. I could not get over I had never thought of this before. I simply used fishing line and a large needle to string the popcorn and cranberries. After it was done I added plaid ribbon to the ends.

And then I had so many cranberries left over I had to come up with something else. First begin by searching your husband's stash (or maybe yours) for galvanized wire. Next cut fresh rosemary from your yard (or go buy some). Cut the wire to desired size of wreath...mine was about 16 inches. Mini ones would be so cute attached to gifts!

"Thread" the wire through cranberries until full. Bend wire to connect and cut excess wire to finish. Lay rosemary on wreath and tie ribbon.

Both are so festive for the Christmas season. And super simple.

The Weary World Rejoices

Last year I saw an indoor sign and immediately knew I wanted it for an outdoor Christmas sign. Because I saw it too late last year it didn't happen, but this year it did!

I am so thankful for a husband who willingly takes on all my projects with love.

He may not always be happy about it and my projects usually take a few days as well as have adjustments to work through, BUT he keeps on keeping on with the task at hand. That's love.

I've had the picture on my phone for a year as a constant reminder to not miss the chance this year. So right after Thanksgiving we got started.

Supplies:
BIG piece of wood
Bright red paint
Metallic silver paint.

That's it! After a coat of Kilz we then added two coats of the red. Next Brant free handed the wording with the metallic silver. DONE!

I am so happy with the way it came out! Next he attached "legs" in order to stake it in the ground.

Then we added a spotlight for night time viewing to share it with the world.

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining

Road Trip to Austin-Part 3 The Texas Capitol

The first night we were in Austin and the rain had slacked off a bit we headed to the Capitol.

At night? Brant had been there at night and assured me we could go. I still didn't believe him...until we arrived.

It was open for business! And it was amazing!

I am pretty sure going at night made a big difference for me. Not that seeing it during the day would have been any less amazing, BUT at night it was all lit up and glowing. It was quiet and a little eerie.

The boys were in awe of how big it was and ran and roamed through it all. If you are ever in Austin save going to the Capitol at night. No crowds and it was just more fun being in that BIG place alone...guards were there Mom.

If you are alive today give thanks. If you slept in a warm bed last night give thanks. If you had the privilege of starting your day with coffee and or breakfast give thanks. If today will consist of preparing for tomorrow give thanks. If you have a place to eat a Thanksgiving meal give thanks.

My point...In EVERYTHING (even the bad!) give thanks!

As you start your day take a few minutes to think of all the many little things you can give thanks for.

I give thanks because God is Good. I give thanks because I have walked through dark valleys. I give thanks because HOPE anchors my heart. I give thanks because I have made two trips this week to the grocery store...and may have to go again today! It reminds me I have the privilege, freedom and resources to do so. But many do not!

What if I slowed down for a moment as I am out and about to notice a stranger. Maybe even make eye contact and say Hello.

The holidays are here friends. And for many they are welcomed with high hopes and excitement. But for many others they are remembered with a heavy, sad heart.

Let's give thanks together. And remember that someone you took the time to make feel alive, important and loved may be giving thanks for YOU.

Give thanks and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Road Trip to Austin-Part 2 Mural Art

After we checked in the hotel Friday and unloaded we were once again in the car to go sight seeing. Then we sat in rush hour traffic for an HOUR! Finally we gave up and stopped to eat. After eating supper the rain had briefly stopped so we quickly made our way to a big mural I had been longing to see. The "Greetings from Austin" mural is located on the northwest corner of Annie and South First street. A very popular place for taking photos. I just wish it could have been during the day for better lighting. BUT for a rainy night these did not come out too bad.

The next pictures are just random murals on the way to Austin and back home.

Road Trip to Austin-Part 1 Blue Bell Creamery

We just got home from a quick road trip to Austin yesterday. It rained the entire way to Austin on Friday. And pretty much the entire time we were there with just a few very brief breaks. And then yesterday morning as we were leaving the sun was out and it was beautiful! Oh well. Although it rained we did manage to have FUN! And checked off a few things we've been wanting to do/see in Austin...and along the way to Austin.

Our first stop on Friday was touring the Blue Bell Creamery. The Blue Bell Creamery is in Brenham, Texas about an hour away from Austin.

They were so excited to get in and get that FREE ice cream that comes with the tour! But we had to wait for the next tour. While waiting we enjoyed seeing how much Blue Bell has changed over the years. Throughout the lobby you can see the history of Blue Bell.

Too bad it was raining! They could have seen this amazing delivery truck up close.

I had no idea Blue Bell has been around so long!

The tour was equally interesting to see where and how they make all that tasty ice cream. No cameras were allowed during the tour so I have nothing to show of that. But who really cares! Right?

The boys were ready for ICE CREAM!!

And we had 32 flavors to choose from. HOW can you pick just one?! Well you don't. After you have your free ice cream you can go back and get one scoop for a dollar. I passed, but all three guys went back for more.

I may not have ordered a second, but I did try Brant's. And let me tell you what, hands down Chocolate Covered Cherries is by far one of the best. Now if we can just find it in the store.

What we found interesting is that the consistency of the ice cream there is much creamer. We all are guessing that maybe it does not go through the blast freezing cycle that all their ice creams go through when shipping out to venders.

Whatever the reason it was AMAZING!!!

Melting Crayons

This morning after reading and our memory work for Classical Conversations my crafty one had a fun idea.

"Let's melt all our broken crayons!"

So we ditched the rest of our school work to have a little fun.

Basically we used all the broken ones that would have ended up in the trash anyway. We peeled all the paper off and placed them in a muffin tin.

Place the muffin tin in your pre-heated 275 degree oven. The crayons should be melted in about 10-13 minutes. Carefully place the hot muffin tin on a heat resistant surface and let cool for about 25 minutes. Then place tin in your freezer for about 5-10 minutes.

** If you place in the refrigerator/freezer before cooled- the muffins may crack from the extreme temp. change.

Invert the muffin tin the chilled muffin sized crayons should fall right out.

They thought this was SO cool! We'll wrap them in plastic wrap and share with friends. I'll be cheesy and make a note that says..."You make my world more colorful".

One-Bowl Pumpkin Bread

I have been meaning to share this EASY recipe since October. For a while I was making it once a week because all the guys love it. As does this gal. It has so many of those spices that are for Fall. My favorite is the ginger. What I also love about this recips is that all you need is one bowl.

The nuts are optional, but I will say the cinnamon chips are a must. And I can only find cinnamon chips during the holiday season so if you find them pick up a couple of bags....or five.

Easy One-Bowl Pumpkin Bread

Ingredients:
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
3/4 cup pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
2 eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil (you could also use coconut)
1/3 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla

**Optional add-ins
1/2 cup cinnamon chips
1/2 walnuts or pecans

Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350. Butter and flour (spraying with Pam works great too) a 9x5 loaf pan, set aside.
2. Whisk together sugars, flour, spices, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the center of the bowl. Add pumpkin, eggs, oil, water and vanilla. Whisk, starting with the wet ingredients and working your way to the outside of the bowl, mixing the batter until smooth and clump-free. (Don't over-mix)
3. Pour batter into the loaf pan and bake 55-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 5 minutes and then cool on a rack until ready to serve.

Note-even baking at 65 minutes in my oven the top middle is still a little gooey....just the way we love it. You can see it in the picture above. Those are the pieces we all fight over.

From Hiatus to Homemade Caramel Apples

So wow! It's been four months. My little blogging world took a backseat to life and I ran with it. But I'm back!

After a week of the entire family being sick I decided to make Thursday night a FUN night. More like a Friday night with BBQ Chicken pizza and a treat to bring a smile...or a full mouth.

Happy Friday! Now go make some pizza and caramel apples. And get outside and enjoy the weather too!

Skinny Corn, Cucumber and Tomato Salad

It's easy, it's fresh and oh so good. And you can change it up anyway way you wish. I made this for the fourth and can't wait to make it again!

Ingredients:
-4 ears of corn, cooked and stripped from the cob
-chopped basil to taste
-1 medium cucumber partly peeled, sliced and then slices quartered
-one container of cherry tomatoes, sliced in half
-4 green onions sliced
-juice of half a lemon
-2-4 teaspoons of vinegar...the type and amount is up to you. I used Balsamic.
-1 tablespoon of olive oil.

You can cook the corn stove top for a few minutes or microwave for 2 minutes...just wrap each corn cob in a damp paper towel. Once corn is done strip cobs and mix all ingredients together. Salt and pepper to taste.

I personally could have eaten this without any dressing. Hope you enjoy the freshness of this salad. It SCREAMS summer!

Slipping and Sliding!

And then it rained. They were totally bummed out.

And then there was a break in the rain so they got it all set up and away they went...slipping and sliding.

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Smoothie

This is a new favorite for me (and Matthew!) and full of good stuff! Perfect for a quick breakfast, mid-morning snack or lunch.

It is great for a post workout breakfast when you need to refuel fast! Lots of protein from the PB.

Super easy too!

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Smoothie
-1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal-I use the old fashion kind, but I am sure quick oats would be fine.
-1/2 milk, almond milk, soy milk, goat's milk or whatever kind of milk you drink.
-3 tablespoons peanut butter or any nut/fake nut spread you love.
-1 teaspoon vanilla
-half to one cup ice

Blend and suck the glass dry!

**Notes: I added a frozen banana one day and it was great. One morning I made it for Matthew and added a couple of tablespoons of Greek yogurt. He loved it! You can also add 1-2 tablespoons chocolate syrup if you like.

"Starbuffs" Shake

Today I finished day 8 of the 30 Day Shred.

Jillian is kicking my butt! In a good way and I must say I am loving this workout! It is the first real workout I have done in years. The pain is a good pain. And I am finally able to walk and move around without thinking my legs will give out. If you are looking for something different and are up for a challenge I encourage you to give it a try. I started with Level 1 and am trying to decide if I'll continue on this level for 30 days. Things are getting easier and I know from working out when things get comfortable it is time to move ahead...to challenge yourself. We'll see what happens.

I prefer to do my workout first thing in the morning. After the 30 Day Shred I walk for 30 minutes as well. I know good and well if it does not get done first thing in the morning it is not going to happen. I am a morning person so this is what is best for me. I am pumped after a workout and walking, but extremely low on fuel! I finish my walk everyday in hopes I can make it back home without puking. I am generally a "breakfast before anything" kind of girl. I also am a "coffee before anything" kind of girl. So how can I have them both before working out?

Enter "Starbuffs" Shake.

And a bottle of water.

Starbuffs Shake is simply iced coffee, with the ice and a scoop of protein powder. This one is with vanilla protein powder. Can't wait to try it with chocolate too. Each day I make an extra cup or two of coffee knowing I'll save the leftover for a Starbuffs Shake. Allow it to cool down and then place in the fridge with a lid on it. Then it is ready for my shake. To make the shake you pour cold coffee, ice and a scoop of protein powder into blender and blend. Pre-workout protein and my morning coffee. Perfect!

If I am going to eat/snack before a workout I'll do so 30-60 minutes before. This is also great for a post-workout snack.

Protein drinks and smoothies are a good way to get your meal on before or after exercising. They are super easy to make and take well under five minutes. No excuse for not fueling or refueling your body! Come back tomorrow and I'll share a new favorite smoothie...think peanut butter or any nut spread and oatmeal. Yes, in a smoothie.

Tin Can Wind Sock

Can you believe Memorial Day Weekend is just days away?! We are super excited for an extra day with Brant and it makes it that much closer to us taking a break from school!!! For us it also means grilling or firing up the smoker. Brant will be busy with the meat while me and the boys are busy making homemade ice cream. But let's not forget the decorating!

I made these last year for July 4th, but they are also perfect for Memorial Day as well. So I just had to share this craft again. But first make Black Bean and Corn Salsa . Making this salsa will give you the tin cans you will need for the craft. Besides you'll have a snack while you are doing this easy peasy, sorta kid-friendly craft.

So let's get started.

You can use any type or size of can for this. And customize it to your liking. Which BTW I think these would also be FUN with a summer theme. I'm dreaming of a bright blue can with a rainbow of ribbon on my porch in the very near future!

So here is what you will need.

Supplies:
-tin cans
-spray paint (I choose white so my stickers would show up better)
-ribbon or material (I had all this in my stash so I didn't bother buying new)
-stickers (unless you can free hand really nice stars)
-hot glue gun
-crafty children are optional

**NOTE**
Make sure if your children are helping with this craft you have filed down any sharp edges inside the cans.

After washing and drying cans I thought I would let the boys try spray painting. DISASTER to say the least. Brant can attest to that with the over spray covering his shop. I took over at this point.

The boys helped by adding stickers all over the cans. I used a small screw driver and hammer to make holes in the top for the hanger. Thread string through the holes and tie off the string inside to hold the tie. Next I glued ribbon and yarn inside the cans with a hot glue gun......NO burned fingers this time!

And there you have it Tin Can Wind Socks.

The Itch

I've been feeling it for a couple of weeks. And without a doubt it is here. The itching has started and will not go away. I suppose it is the temperature rising outside.

I am itching to stop school for a bit and get to the beach!!!

Heck right about now I'd take a little lake with a sandy shore! Just to be near water is what I am after. I love to sit back and watch the boys play and explore when we are at the beach or a lake......or near water.

Inevitably we always go home with treasures....which reminds me we have some in the truck from this walk along the riverfront yesterday.

I'll let you in on a little secret.......I always have this itch. It just becomes more intense at this time of the year. And Calamine lotion doesn't help.

Fresh Tomatillo Salsa

Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo so I have been testing out some of my favorites. Fresh is the key word. And this is so fresh! This salsa is a nice change from a red tomato salsa!!!! It was my first time having tomatillos and I must say I love them. I followed a recipe from Annie's Eats (source below) but did change it up just a tad.

Fresh Tomatillo Salsa
Ingredients:
-4-5 medium size tomatillos, husked, rinsed and quartered
-1-2 large garlic cloves, peeled and chopped
-1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped for a less spicy salsa; remove just a few seeds for more spice.
-1/2 to 2/3 cup of cilantro roughly chopped
-1/2 teaspoon of coarse salt
-water to thin as you like.

Combine all ingredients in food processor or blender. I used a blender and pulsed it to a course puree. You could more if you prefer a not so chunky salsa. Add water to thin it out if you like. Transfer to a serving bowl and ENJOY with warm chips. This makes about 1 1/2 cups.

Notes:
-You could also use 2 serrano peppers.
-You may notice red flakes in my salsa. I removed all seeds and membrane in the jalapeno and it just was not spicy at all. So I added red pepper flakes. It worked.
-This salsa would be great with the Fresh Lime Margaritas I shared yesterday.

Fresh Lime Margaritas

Just in time for Monday!!! You know Cinco de Mayo!! Two things come to mind. Margaritas and chips and salsa. Hands down! So this is a two part post. Come back tomorrow and I'll share a new salsa recipe. Fresh Tomatillo Salsa. But for now lets get to the lime goodness.

This was my first time making fresh lime margaritas. It has been many years since we've made margaritas. For too long and actually when I did it was with a mix! Margaritas are a favorite to order when at a Mexican restaurant although I bet many use a mix. I knew when I set out to find a recipe it must be fresh.....really homemade. So I got to searching. I wanted to also use what we had on hand....Triple Sec and Sauza Blue Tequila Silver-white tequila. These turned out to be so easy and pretty darn good.

Fresh Lime Margaritas

3/4 cup silver tequila
3/4 cup triple sec
3/4 cup fresh lime juice (this ended up being 9 small limes and it took way too much time, but it was so worth it!)
2 tablespoons sugar

Combine tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and 2 tablespoons sugar in a small pitcher; stir to dissolve sugar. Add crushed ice to your glass and stir for a full 15 seconds to chill the mixture and properly dilute it with the melting ice.

Notes:
-This only made two glasses....glass seen in picture above.
-Allowing the mixture to melt the ice makes a big difference. After making them we tasted them without ice. WHOA!! After adding ice, stirring and the ice started melting it was right on!
-I have always been a frozen rita gal, but these I really liked. Rocks may be my new thing.

Mornings=Pondering on life

Good Morning May!

Although I am not really ready for you I do have a few requests.......can we please work together and make this an awesome month? I'm thinking healthy eating is in order.....you know lots of fruits and veggies. What about an extra dose of Super Hero will power??? And what about great weather? That would be amazing.....cool mornings, pleasant days and maybe not so humid. Can we have easy days with the boys, accomplishing every task on my list and no arguing!! And what about weekends filled with FUN and no drama? No heartache this month! And absolutely no surprises!! Please May be good to me.

Is that all too much to ask?? I know May can't do these things for me. I just have to set my mind to them and DO IT!

If you follow me on Instagram I shared my thoughts about life yesterday.

Pondering life as I do most mornings....life is, and never has been, what I expect it to be. That is wonderful and at times maddening! I don't have all the answers but I do have some. And know without a shadow of a doubt Who has them all. Those I do have answers to I have learned the hard way. This morning as I see my daylilies about to bloom and anxiously await their show I can rest knowing my faith tells me no matter what lies ahead of me God is already there.

As I start a new month (which is AWESOME!!) and am anxiously awaiting what will come I CAN rest. I can be at peace, rejoice in the fact that The Almighty, my Almighty, God is taking care of every single detail. He is working it all out for His Good not mine. And YOU can have that too!!!! It's not easy this thing called life. I get kicked in the gut DAILY!!! And that is exactly when I call on and hold especially tight to my Heavenly Father.

Maybe life is just peachy keen, but something seems to be missing. Maybe that is the Holy Spirit tugging at your heart. Listen He is talking to you. Be still and have a chat with Him. He is waiting.......

I speak from the heart friends. My words are all kooky at times, but He knows what I mean and knows my heart. And really that is all that matters. I hope my humble thoughts speak to you today and hopefully lift you up as we begin a new month in this life.

Kiwi Cilantro Margarita

Warmer weather calls for refreshing beverages. The boys had cherry juice with Sprite, but Brant and I tried a new drink. Now before you knock it you must give it a try. If you are in the mood for something different this margarita is great. Light, refreshing and full of flavor.

NOTE: Recipe below is from QVC's David Venable. We did change it up just a tad using white grape juice because it was all we could find. You can bet I will make them again once I find white cranberry. And we also made them using the seeds and "meat" of the kiwi as you can tell from the picture above. We made them without and felt like it had no taste. So we added the "meat" and seeds back in and it was perfect.

Let me know if you try them!

Ingredients:

6 kiwis, peeled and quartered
1 cup white cranberry juice
4 cups ice
1/4 cup loosely packed fresh cilantro, stems removed
3/4 cup tequila
2 Tbsp triple sec
1/4 cup sugar

Preparation:

Place the kiwis and the white cranberry juice in a blender. Blend on low speed for 15-20 seconds, making sure not to dissolve the seeds. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh colander and discard the seeds.
Place the strained mixture back into the blender and add the ice, cilantro, tequila, triple sec, and sugar and blend until smooth. Serve immediately.

15 years

It was like a fairy tale when we met. And I had my fairy tale wedding too. But unlike a fairy tale this became a true story.....a love story. A romantic drama still being written as I type! Each chapter (year) filled with love, laughter, drama, heartache at times, suspense, surprises, twists and turns, new adventures and so much more.

I felt it from the first time I met him. I just knew he would be a part of my life. And on April 17, 1999 he became my everything.

I could write for days sharing so many wonderful, happy details leading up to this day. I might make you cringe and maybe even cry sharing heartache and gut wrenching hard times we have been through over the past 15 years together. It all is part of who we are today as husband and wife. But really it does not matter what has happened in the past.

The most important thing is we are still together and our marriage is stronger than it has ever been. And the reason for that is our faith in God and the commitment we made to one another 15 years ago today. Wedding vows are a sacred promise between bride and groom in front of God. A promise to love each other and be committed to each other even through thick and thin.....AKA good times and bad! And that promise is something we have never taken lightly.

This man. Oh how I adore him! This day reminds me that God truly loves me. He gave me the most wonderful person and chose him to be my lifetime partner. I will forever be grateful. And blessed! Love brought us together as husband and wife. And gave us a best friend for life.

To my dear husband,

You have shown me what love is. You are the reason for my happy days and the comfort in my sad days. And sometimes you are the reason I scream, stomp my feet and pout. You cheer my successes and comfort me in my failures. I am so very proud to be your wife. Happy Anniversary Honey.

Cookie Pizza

This is the easiest birthday treat ever! I'll let you know right from the start it is not homemade. There is nothing about it that is homemade! But in my opinion that is perfectly alright for birthdays if it is what the birthday boys want.

We've been making it for years. Many times for parties and play dates, but never for their birthday. ALL children love it. Its basically a big sugar cookie with candy and marshmallows. You could easily change it up to suit your child's favorite chocolate candy. And BTW, BIG kids love it too!

Cookie Pizza
1 tube refrigerated sugar cookie dough
flour for rolling ball of dough
MM chocolate candies
Snickers Bars chopped (I used the King size...its actually two bars in one pack)
1/3-1/2 cup mini marshmallows

Preheat oven to 350. On a lightly floured surface, knead the cookie dough into a ball. Transfer the ball to the cookie/pizza pan and roll into a 10-inch circle, flouring the rolling pin as needed. Bake at 350 for for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and top with candies and mini marshmallows. Return to oven for 7 more minutes to soften candy. To serve cut into wedges or squares.

Tips and hints:
*I think more Snickers would be better.
*When cut into a pizza wedge this is over the top sweet, kick you in the gut good! Next time I will cut in squares.
*Easter idea---Pastel MMs and the PB eggs!

Whoa! The transformation is cRaZy!!! Those sweet babies! And look at those handsome boys today. If you read my post on Wednesday you know how hard it has been to get these two to allow us to take pictures. These and many more were equally hard! Boys this age, well at least our boys, are not easy to photograph. And I now have a new respect for photographers! There were threats, bribes and there may have been some stomping of my feet. Hey a Momma does what she has to do to get a picture.

All in all I did get some great shots. And I just might share more another day. For now we have NINE YEAR OLD celebrating to do.

Seriously, Almost NINE?!

It's hard to believe they will be NINE on Friday!!! Over the past few days we have tried to get some decent pictures of them. And for the most part we did alright. But as you will see they are typical almost nine year old boys who are not interested in us taking their picture.

I have high hopes of getting them dressed in something ~~cute~~ cool and taking some better shots.
