Talking Dogs Need Not Apply - Traveler's Commercial

Lots of advertisers have tried to entertain us by humanizing animals, but most of them just don't get it. Talking dogs are marginally funny and only for the first few seconds. And having them hold signs in their mouths isn't a better option. Take a look at this Pup Peroni spot for proof.

Maybe it's that companies have to try harder when their product is an intangible. I'm betting that's why most of the commercials I find fun to watch come from eTrade babies or pink-haired <a href="http://pushbox.blogspot.com/2006/01/pimp-my-inesurance-company.html"target="_blank">Erin and her esurance.

It seems <a href="http://www.fallon.com/"target="_blank">Fallon Minneapolis ad creators Scott O’Leary and Ryan Peck reached just a little further into their creative pockets to pull out engaging material, and with their Traveler's "Prized Possession" ad, they've won me over. Yes, it's another ad featuring an animal with human characteristics, but it's one that's done right. There are no special effects to speak of. I instantly empathize with this dog's need to protect his prize without a word barked, or sign written. Because the action, at once typically human and canine, is underscored by the simple lyrics and raw emotion in the voice of <a href="http://www.raylamontagne.com/"target="_blank">Ray LaMontagne, this message needs nothing more.

A post from Forrester Research :

And this is where the interesting shift in the recognition of Social Media marketing is evident: Last year, brands used Social Media marketing mostly to develop content for and promote their Super Bowl ads, but this year Super Bowl ads are being dedicated to the support of larger Social Media marketing strategies. The servant has become the master.Admin, <a href="http://agency2socialmedia.com/2010/02/who-is-the-mvp-of-the-marketing-bowl-social-media-or-super-bowl-ads/"target="_blank">Who is the MVP of the Marketing Bowl: Social Media or Super Bowl Ads?, Feb 2010
Alfred Hitchcock <a href="http://hitchcock.tv/mov/hfilm.html"target="_blank">knew this: You don't need a lot of special effects to get your audience's attention, and sometimes, it's the simplest thing that works.

In leaning on these two conventions, the <a href="http://www.usps.com/"target="_blank">US Postal Service has gotten its take on the evil clown commercial just right. They've stuck to an often forgotten advertising formula:

You've got yourself a problem? We have the solution. Your solution. And we'll give it to you in a language you can easily understand. But just in case you're not paying attention, we're going to use a jarring but familiar attention-grabber right in the middle of our story so we can suck you back in to the message.

It doesn't get much clearer than that.

This 2009 ad features a huddling family stranded on their front porch, too afraid to enter their own home. It's because they've received a package containing a small but frightening clown with the eerie ability to move through the house on its own power. To make matters worse, they've ordered the thing through the internet, essentially bringing the problem on themselves.

Enter the USPS to the rescue. As Mom, Dad and kids cower outside their own front door, a friendly postal worker confidently approaches and inquires as to what the issue might be. The next phase of the commercial begins a transition ushered in with a 3-frame but effective static edit straight out of Hitchcock's <a href="http://hitchcock.tv/mov/psycho/psycho.html"target="_blank">Psycho, complete with music. It's convincing, but you can almost hear the hero's anthem cue in the background as the USPS worker shrugs off the clown to deliver a very succinct script containing all the information the family needs to easily rid themselves of the invader.

"Perfect" says Dad on hearing the solution.

But it's the very next shot that seals the deal, placing us, and the postman, firmly on the side of the frightened family. For the first time in the commercial, the point of view is shown from deeper inside the house, pulling back a bit to neatly frame both family and the USPS. And conveniently, the shot includes our postal worker holding a box of perfect size to contain and rid the home of the horrible little clown.

Contrast this with the <a href="http://pushbox.blogspot.com/2010/01/please-stop-snarking-walmart-clown.html"target="_blank">Walmart Evil Clown commercial, where the harlequin is shot from a low angle as he creeps into the room. My interpretation of this take? The retailer unintentionally presents itself as a blue-haired giant that lumbers into rooms (communities) to crush unicorns (mom and pop stores) under its feet while roaring at children (protesters). And in this particular scenario, what's interesting is that its only the moms (target market) that remains unfazed.

Frightening.

photo credit: <a href="http://www.arnadal.no/film/reviews.htm"target="_blank">The Fresh Site

Please Stop the Snarking - Walmart Clown Commercial

There was a time I would have found myself invited to birthday parties where I'd hope to be entertained by funny men with brillo hair and brightly painted faces. It was also a time my parents may have turned aside as I played with minature horses crowned with extremely sharp edges. But when I want proof that era is far gone, I tune in to watch Walmart's new screaming clown commercial. In one short sequence, the magical silver unicorns of my childhood are rebranded as ugly weapons, and the normally mute and smiling funny men that used to give me giggles can now clear entire rooms with their tortured screeching.

Of course, looking down my nose at this commercial could just be because I've developed a real fear of painted men in pom-pommed jumpsuits.

Walmart has been removing the commercial from YouTube, but for now, you can view it here.

But it's also the music. No doubt, you knew the song would be a hit. By the google results when searching for your commercial, though, I'm not certain whether like me, viewers loved your Kindle or the gorgeous visuals. Then there's that earworm sweetly sung by Ms. <a href="http://www.annielittle.com/"target="_blank">Annie Little.

The only problem I see with your pitch is that the images call to mind words like "retro". Don't get me wrong. I'm with you on the whole vintage thing. I mean, take a look at my blog header. Where I think you're missing the mark, Amazon, is in using the nostalgic tone to introduce a completely non-retro and decidedly modern way to enjoy a centuries-old medium. It's a tall order to get readers to switch away from the very tactile experience of turning pages as you move through the story. I'll be interested to see whether you accomplish your goal, but am left wondering whether a commercial recalling what appear to be stories from childhood reading material will help you reach it.

Speaking of effort, directors Angela Kohler and Ithyle Griffiths get an A in the category of Creative.

Fly Me Away

Silver moons and paper dreams
Faded maps and shiny things
You’re my favorite one-man show
A million different ways to go

Will you fly me away?
Take me away with you, my love

Painted scenes, I’m up all night
Slaying monsters, flying kites
Speak to me in foreign tongues
And share your secrets one by one

Will you fly me away?
Take me away with you, my love

Can hardly think what life was like
Before I had you by my side
Can’t say what I’d do without you
Knowing what it’s like to have you

Hidden walkways back in time
Endless stories, lover’s crime
In my mind I’ve been set free
We’ll take this journey, you and me

Will you fly me away?
Take me away with you, my love
very WEIRD lately? No, I mean even stranger than usual.

The Geico <a href="http://pushbox.blogspot.com/2010/01/geicos-whos-watching-pushbox-voted-most.html"target="_blank">stack-o-cash ads are admittedly odd, but not nearly on par with these included in Adfreak's <a href="http://www.adweek.blogs.com/adfreak/the-30-freakiest-commercials-of-2009.html"target="_blank">The 30 Freakiest Commercials of 2009. Quite a few of the ads are international PSA's I've so far been spared, but Tabasco's greasy talking pepperoni faces have regularly infiltrated my living room.

*shudder*

My vote for CreepQueen goes to Palm Pre's Tamara Hope. It's been a while since I've seen the green-faced woman with a strange sense of Zen, but she really makes me nervous. I'm never really certain what she was trying to tell me. Is it that owning a palm pre, a phone she'd like me to purchase for the purpose of keeping in touch with friends and family, watching videos, playing around with silly apps, or connecting to social networks, is a quiet and lonely experience? Seems ad agency Modernista! may have missed the memo on what a smartphone is actually used for. My theory that the ad is communicating a simple wish that their own personal phones would stop the incessant delivery of work-related messages. Of course I could be wrong. The commercial could very well be a philosophical commentary on the zen concept of emptiness, though a very literal interpretation.

Have you visited the Modernista web page? It seems a lot of <a href="http://econsultancy.com/blog/2324-modernista-ad-agency-2-0-or-bs-2-0"target="_blank">folks can't make much sense of their message, let alone this client's.

Men have fallen <a href="http://thefastertimes.com/famehype/2009/10/19/im-in-love-with-the-progressive-insurance-girl/#more-629"target="_blank">hopelessly in love with this unassuming, aproned girl-next door, and I'll confess I've got my own girl-crush going. Maybe you've stumbled across <a href="http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/2008/09/the_cult_of_the_progressive_ca.php"target="_blank">The Cult of the Progressive Car Insurance Chick while googling for tricked-out nametags or tickets to the white-space nirvana, a cloud computing shopper's heaven.

Or should that have remained my own little secret.

Twitter's always buzzing with Flo "hot or not" quizzes where the debate on her sexy status falls hard into the territory of fandom.
With her tricked-out nametag, Flo, or <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0183960/"target="_blank">Stephanie Courtney, is said to be baffled by the attention, but she's in a family of commercial personalities Americans don't mind barging into their living rooms. She's a perky Amy Winehouse channeling the folksy and outspoken <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2004-02-18-miner-obit_x.htm"target="_blank">Madge, Palmolive dishwashing liquid's spokesperson from 1966 to 1992. Colgate-Palmolive got Americans to trust the savvy working woman in uniform then, and we seem to love Progressive's red-lipped, quirky reinvention.

Bob's achieved industry guru status when it comes to directing children. His most virulent ads, filmed for <a href="http://www.blogger.com/"target="_blank">Trigon health insurance, have been blogged and reblogged worldwide and I'll admit that even after bumping into them in every cranny of the internet, I'm still not done watching. As a matter of fact, I'm here to continue spreading them. The kids are just that funny.

...I trust the children and the children trust me.

The secret to his literal "commercial success", says Ebel, is that he
trusts the children, and the children trust him. It's a nice enough sentiment and time tested notion but where the idea becomes craft is in the ad industry's understanding that we, the consumer, want to join in and trust those precocious little people too.

Marketers have been disarming us with children since the beginning of the Ad Age (Mikey, Life Cereal), but Ebel's talent for getting us to love his pitch comes in creating finely balanced and very clever juxtapositions that dangle us on the edge of that "circle of trust" he brags about.

What's his trick? Within the world of the Trigon commercials shown below, the fact that the not-so-ingenue is selling a product is laid bare and the children themselves seem to be in on the game. You'll even find one little one acknowledging his stage by breaking eye contact with his audience, glancing off-camera at least once during the long take. This is a very self-aware bunch and there's no attempt to mask the fact that what's going on here is a Sell, using bits of recognizable dialog borrowed from a very adult world. When one of the little girls lapses into a fit of giggles, her costar's dour expression, just in case we've lost sight of what really needs to transpire in the ad's 30 seconds, reminds her and us, "We're doing business here."

We watch, understanding that we're entering a deal. We'll agree to listen to your obvious pitch, Trigon, as long as we're all in on the joke delivered by those precocious little minxes. Well done.

These two ads speak volumes in little voices. For your enjoyment, I'm including a link to the entire <a href="http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=3F28C21FAEFCE675&search_query=trigon+commercial"target="_blank">playlist.
The brainchild of local <a href="http://beta.cpbgroup.com/#gap"target="_blank">Crispin Porter & Bogusky (cpbgroup), these commercials make me wish I'd once been a sassy little 10-year-old who dared to dress as though a rainbow had thrown up all over me.

... What's this about
talking to the moose?

Not kidding. I love these ads. The energy of these girls infects me every time and I applaud the group for the choice of using an easily memorized cheer. They've gone back to the very basics to come up with a brilliant tv jingle. And to use a cheer at all, combining catchy phrases, group participation, excitement, and youth? Genius. I don't even care that I hate uggs or their knockoffs when I think: how cute are those boots?!

Now go ahead, see if you can view this without wanting to *SQUEE*.

Here's what I believe you're telling me about how I should desire a rolling toaster by the name of Soul.

In your market research, you've guessed that in my comfortable, middle-class world, my biggest fear is that I am part of a society of drones living a drab, washed-out existence set in neutral tones. Not only is there a lack of individuality, purpose, and Soul, but I'm going nowhere fast. Really fast. Me and my fellow drones don't even realize we're not getting anywhere until some crazy new hamsters with, Yes!, Soul! pull up in a red toaster. We are astonished! These daring new city hamsters invoke in us a feeling of deep desire-to-be-desired and longing for fulfillment because they have four wheels instead of one, drive a red toaster, and listen to urban music on popular mp3 players. Attainment of these things is all that's required to express individuality and break from the sterile subuarban world we know is ours. I, too, can have a Soul, you promise.

I get it. With a name like David & Goliath, I understand why you'd want to address the big questions.

What I'm having trouble with is that this execution springs from the same well of lack of individuality and purpose we're seeing in the hamster drones. It seems you've bitten off a whole lot more than you ever had the intention of chewing in a 30 or 60 second spot. There's too much transparency in your goal to attempt to resolve themes of individuality and existential angst. I thought the ad game is to convince me that I lack, to play to my fear of not even knowing I have a lack, or to evoke in me the desire for the thing that will somehow transform me. You didn't deliver. If I buy into your pitch, by the commercial's end you've left me with the same image of myself I started with and I wind up a reworked drone in a low-budget car with bangin' speakers.

You've shown me nothing I lack, and you haven't convinced me that any Soul associated with buying the car comes from your wheels rather than my choice in music. Me and my rodent friends are still caught in a repeating lock-step, simultaneously bobbing our heads to thumping music, but we're never transformed. I'm still a hamster with wheels. Worse, unless I pay cash, someone else owns my soul.

Oh, Generique! - Doce & Gabbana Commercial

I've resurrected this blog, Dolce & Gabbana, because not only do I hate what you've done to McConaughey, but I don't think I can possibly forgive you for ruining my favorite Miles Davis piece.

And seriously, Matthew, I can only ask you... WHY?

The commercial starts off strong with a gorgeous black and white slow motion shot of a sleek and mysterious car you know is going to be carrying someone of style and importance. Miles' Generique starts on cue, drawing my attention to the noir feel every.single.time in delicious anticipation of what I know signals a sensual scene. It's because Generique was originally played in the 1958 French film <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascenseur_pour_l'%C3%A9chafaud"target="_blank">Ascenseur pour l'echafaud.

But then our actor exits the car in a stiff and obvious pose and the commercial dies at that very second. The rest is forced and over the top, with the paparazzi's movements so overly choreographed that it grates against Miles' soft and beautifully raw notes in the background. The effect of this juxtaposition exaggerates the cheesy visuals and not in a humorous or tongue-in-cheek kind of way.

I'm not sure whether Dolce & Gabanna takes themselves so seriously as to believe we'll fall for this overt attempt at making us desire being the object of desire but it falls as completely flat as McConaughey's abs, the only shot that, for some, may redeem this irritating bit of fluff.

At least I love the soundtrack and can enjoy it in the way it was intended:
For all our sakes, Kirstie, close your mouth when you chew.

Ms. Jenny Craig has taken an interesting approach to Pushing methods for weight loss. Apparently it's possible to lounge around on a sofa enjoying

..."lounge on the sofa enjoying orgasmic fettuccini alfredo"...

orgasmic fettuccini alfredo, then stuff cake in your mouth and still lose weight. If a Barry White type of seductive song plays in the background, moaning is recommended. The scenario's tempting, I'll admit.

Rather than jump on a treadmill or trudge off to the gym, chances are I'm already lounging in front of the tv, complete with dinner or snack in hand. The ad suggests that if I just substitute my Ben and Jerry's for fettuccini "a la jenny", at least 60 pounds will melt right off, no sweating required.

The commercial leaves me wondering why the advertisers would think that the site of a former model stuffing her mouth full of dessert would entice me.

30 Seconds... $2.4 Million, Bandwidth... Really, Jerry? Aren't you being a little melodramatic? Let's take a look at USA Today's "rules to make ads magical".

1. Make 'em laugh out loud.
Alright, I'll buy this. Everyone loves a laugh raucous enough to spray a mouthful of beer.

2. Shock 'em and surprise em.
Most viewers want shock and surprise while watching the game, but not the bathroom breaks in between.

3. Let em see the point.
Can I get a "Duh" on this one? The article continues...
"Complex dialogue is your enemy," warns Jeff Goodby, co-chairman at Goodby Silverstein & Partners. "If your commercial works without sound, all the better."
Goodby, see my post about Nextel's Push It.

4. Let animals be people, too.
This bullet point can also be written as, "When viewers are drunk, resort to slapstick to get some laughs". Bring on the chimps as office workers.

5. Let celebrities be people, too.
Huh?

6. Coin a catchphrase with legs.
In other words, cook up a virulent meme. Remember "I'm going to Disney World."? You get the picture.

7. Make it bigger than TV.
It seems that advertisers are taking this one very seriously and are now attacking our cell phones.

8. Pluck the heartstrings.
All that partying's got to be interrupted by some great emo. Next, men will turn to their buddies crying "I love you, man!".

9. Reflect diversity... smartly.
Uh, yeah. Considering how many football players belong to minority groups this seems like a no brainer, no?

10. Be topical... carefully.
Don't attack social issues, just find the overwhelming sentiment of your audience and gently point to it.

Great insight, Pushers.

Just in case you missed the link to the real article, you can click it again right here.

Nextel and Sprint's Commercials Are Pushin' It Real Good

This commercial works with or without sound. It's so popular that it's made comeback more than a year after being introduced.

...My eyes snap to the tv whenever I hear the driving music...

TBWA\Chiat\Day New York was responsible for putting it out in 2004, but with the Sprint/Nextel marriage, it's been reintroduced, and I still find it funny. The Push has several brilliant layers:

1. Without sound the message delivered is that Nextel helps keep work interruptions as short as possible so that the real "business" at hand can resume.

2. With sound, that same message is enhanced and even though I don't understand a word being said, my eyes snap to the television whenever I hear that driving music.

3. Once I actually listen to the snappy and concise dialogue, I understand the variety of uses for the product.

4. The closing frames hold the real message, and they've employed a delicious tactic in getting me to watch the fun until Nextel's "business at hand" is delivered. The message, "Push It" refers to the walkie talkie button as well as the advert. In that way, this very clever commercial is self-referential.

It's no wonder its won several awards.

That's not the Queen's English I hear.

It's difficult to understand why an ad agency might feel that an American might want to purchase insurance from a little green British gecko. There are several reasons why this advertising campaign's Push makes little sense.

1. Geckos are not commonly found in England. Besides, wasn't he Australian last year?
2. Though they're cute, there's no track record here for advancing insurance sales.
3. Geckos are not known to be especially wise on matters of insurance.
4. They're cute. Insurance has never been "cute".

As far as I'm concerned an animation competition between Rhythm and Hue's salamander and Wildbrain's Erin Esurance is no contest.

Sorry, Pink-haired Erin wins. Hands down.
It seemed to wonderfully capture my feelings of appearing to be a disgusting ogre whenever a cold or flu renders me sneezy, drippy, and otherwise untouchable.

... Drippy and otherwise untouchable...

Theraflu ads bring to life the unspoken horror of living within a body filled with contamination by way of a green, swollen, and generally ugly man slogging his way through the public. His ostracization is ended, miraculously, when a little girl takes pity on him and hands him a magical transforming elixir.

If a medicine can cure my social exile during my time of neediness, I'm buying. Oh, and if it can cure even a monster of his ugliness, I'm heavily investing!

photo: Theraflu.com

technorati tags: <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/Theraflu="" rel="tag">Theraflu, flu season,

Oh, Please No, Sprint

Tell me the vehicle for this USA Today article about a new Burger King Push method isn't true.
