It is good for you in more ways than one. Exercise will help with depression, even if you are not dpressed it will help your mood. Wouldn't you love to start your day in a better mood? It might be hard for you to get the motivation to do on your own. Get a buddy. It's always easier to exercise or walk with a frend. See if it puts your kids in a better mood! Get them to exercise with you.

If you do take a walk, look ahead of you, not at your feet. usually, when you see people walking, they are looking at their feet. It's an easy habit to get into. How can you feel better looking at your feet? You are missing so much around you.

Besides being good for the mind, it is good for the body. Exercise lowers cholesterol, helps with blood sugar, increases the size of your arteries, helps prevent fat from clogging your arteries, and helps prevent blood clots. I'm not going to ist everything, you get the idea.

If you have a problem with insomnia, exercising might help. It reduces stress and releases tension in your muscles.

Exercise is so good for you. Kind of makes you wonder why people don't do it more!

Homemade Laundry Soap

I love my homemade, CHEAP laundry soap. I tried making the liquid and it turned out really well. With kids and animals it took up too much time. Or it might be that I don't organize my time well. My sister said she uses it dry, I am stealing this recipe from her.

1.2 bar of grated Fels Naptha soap ( I use tea tree oil soap. I have found that coast works great too)
1 c of borax
1 c of dishwasher powder
I use 2 Tbs per load
Usually I don't like powdered laundry soap because it doesn't dissolve all that well sometimes. (Sorry, no pics ...need a new camera!) IT wasn't pretty, but we were just experimenting. We made it from two cardboard boxes, duct tape, glass, and aluminum foil. So far it has made it up to 250 degrees. Pretty good for a cardboard box. : ) We haven't had much sun and we live in the woods so the trees cover alot of the sun during the day.We are going to try our oven a different way, I'll let you know how that goes. Since it has been so cold here I thought we might try a solar heater too. Maybe I'll have a new camera by then and be able to post a few pictures.

Solar

Slow blog month.....I've been so busy lately getting the kids done with their end of the year work for school. But I just thought I'd give a heads up on what we are working on. We are going to be experimenting with solar power. Not the big expensive panels you go out and buy. We are going to be trying to work with what we have here and things we can buy at minimal cost. I have been researching this on the web A LOT! I have come up with some pretty cool ideas. Check back with me and see what we have come up with and I'll post the results. Something to keep the kids busy with this summer. Nice science project for our portfolio too!

Feverfew

MIGRAINE HELP!

I need to give you this warning first just in case you don't read the whole article. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE ON BLOOD THINNERS!!!! Read the warnings at the bottom of the page and please check out the links.

DO NOT TAKE IF YOU RE PREGNANT OR LACTATING!!!!!!!

The first thing I started using feverfew for was headaches. It amazed me that it worked so well. You only use the leaf for this. I eat the leaf on its own. People do prefer to eat it with something like bread , crackers, etc. The leaf causes mouth ulcers in some people if it isn't eaten with something. Fortunately it can be bought in pill form. Although if you have the plant in your garden it helps keep mosquitos and carpenter bees away.

If you do suffer from migraines it might lessen the pain a little. Feverfew has to build up in your system before it will alleviate a migraine. But you might have fewer migraines and when you do get them the pain may be lessened.

It helps cramping during a period but it does cause heavier bleeding!

This is a good site for more information:

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.institute-shot.com/images/UC%2520Botanical%2520Garden%2520Feverfew.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.institute-shot.com/Feverfew.htm&h=369&w=599&sz=143&hl=en&start=10&tbnid=6rCSL2viSGtaFM:&tbnh=83&tbnw=135&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dfeverfew%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

imgurl=http://www.planetbotanic.ca/images/feverfew.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.planetbotanic.ca/fact_sheets/feverfew_fs.htm&h=507&w=288&sz=85&hl=en&start=13&tbnid=iXww-5Ava2ZDzM:&tbnh=131&tbnw=74&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dfeverfew%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

Violets

Besides being decorative, violets are good for you.

My grandma told me that her mother used violets in salads, among other things. She could make a salad from going out in her yard and finding it herself!

Violets were one of the many things she used. You can use both the flowers and the leaves. The flowers can be candied or made into jelly.

It also helps with digestion. It might not be bad to add a few to your salad, it certainly won't hurt. ;)

It is good for fever, coughs, swelling, to soothe sore feet, acne, it is good for diabetic foot problems, many more uses.

Two really good sites......

http://www.twoherbalmamas.com/tips.htm

http://www.henriettesherbal.com/articles/viola.html

Plantain

Just a weed in your yard, a real pain in the butt. That's what I thought. It turns out this weed is actually good for you. Whether you take it as a daily tonic or to treat an ailment. It is also good for your skin. Boil the leaves, roots, seeds, and stems for a face wash. It relaxes your skin, helps rosacia, cleanses, and heals. Boil the same parts and drink as a tea as a tonic, to treat inflammation, and bug bites. Native Americans used it to treat snake bites. The fresh leaves can be used whole or bruised in the form of a poultice. Rubbed on parts of the body stung by insects, nettles, etc., or for burns and scalds, the leaves will provide relief and will help stop the bleeding of minor wounds. Plantain is also said to be good for healing lung problems.

To prepare an infusion, pour 1 pint of boiling water on 1 OZ. of the herb, stand in a warm place for 20 minutes, afterwards strain and let cool. Take a wineglassful to half a teacupful three or four times a day.

For toothaches, take the tonic (infusion), the fresh boiled leaves or just crushes leaves and put it between the gums and cheek. (I have tried this and it is AMAZING!)

There are so many uses for this and we thought it was "just a weed!"

Alfalfa

I know you wouldn't think of taking alfalfa for yourself, That is only for horses! NOT TRUE!

Well actually I bought alfalfa in pill form because my horses hate alfalfa hay. I started reading some of the benefits online and started taking it myself. The reason alfalfa is so good for you is because the roots go so deep in the ground, it gets all kinds of minerals from the ground other plants can't get to. The leaves of the alfalfa plant are rich in minerals and nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and carotene (useful against both heart disease and cancer). The leaves are also rich in protein, vitamins E and K. Did you know that alfalfa makes a body alkaline instead of acidic. Cancer doesn't grow in alkaline bases! . It is useful in the treatment of urinary tract infections, and kidney, bladder and prostrate disorders. Alkalizes and detoxifies the body, especially the liver. The leaves of the plant contain eight essential amino acids. Alfalfa is a good laxative and a natural diuretic. It is also useful in the treatment of urinary tract infections. I am sure there are more reasons for taking it, but these are some of the best I have found!

Why??

On this site, I am hoping to inform as well as learn. I have been studying vitamins, minerals, and herbal remedies for years. Reading books, on the internet, and of course from Grandma, I have found great information that has helped my family and my pets. I want to share with people what I have learned and maybe learn some new things along the way. I am not a professional, I just would rather take something without all of the side effects of chemical medicines, and get rid of the problem instead of masking it. I do take medicines when it is necessary, it is nice to have an alternative that is good for you, not chemically produced, and has positive benefits not harmful side effects.
