PROMISE AND LAW

Normal Grand Howl for opening and closing (20 mins)

Today we are going to find out how to keep our Promise!

STEAM RELEASE: Find those words (5 mins)

On the playing ground scatter the words to The Promise on coloured paper as per Six. Cubs must find the words that are on the same coloured paper as the Six they are in.

Once they have found the words, in their Six they can sit together and put The Promise together (5 mins)

What does it mean when we say the Cub Promise?

Explanation of the Promise and Law. (10 mins)

Explain the different parts of the Promise and Law and what it means. Discuss briefly how we can keep the Promise and Law.

Do you think you can put The Promise together by yourselves now? Let's try

RELAY GAME: (15 mins)

In their Sixes, cubs run up and put the words to the Promise together

Now let's see if we can remember the Cub Law

TEAM GAME: Ladder game

Divide into 2 teams. Cubs sit facing each other with legs outstretched touching. Number two cubs with the same number. On calling a number those two cubs jump up and run to the bottom of the ladder. One cub says "A Cub gives in to the Old Wolf: the other cub replies "A Cub does not give in to himself: after which both run up the ladder to their places.

Because you know your Promise and Law so well you are rewarded with a treat!

ACTIVITY: Happy Face (15 mins)

Cubs are given biscuits to decorate with icing

Do you remember the Cub Promise?

Un Muddle Me: (5 mins)

In their Sixes the cubs are given words out of The Promise. On the word 'go' they cubs hunt for their proper place in the sentences. First Six finished wins.

I thought this was such a "cool" idea! Cool Down Cubes.... ice-cubes used for a different purpose. When a Cub needs some gentle "realignment", these cubes are a different way to get them to calm down and take time out...
The Cub gets the opportunity to put his hand in the jar and pick one ...... and see what he has to do.... these range from "look at the sky" - "write a story" and "talk to a friend".
Lovely idea I think.

This is another good idea for the New Chums. Once you have gone over the Promise and Law as well as the Motto etc, they will have great fun with this. Just change it to be relevant to South African Cubbing and I know the Cubs will love it!

New Chums - learning the Handshake, Salute and Grand Howl

NEW CHUMS

Normal Grand Howl for opening and closing. (20 Minutes)

Do you know that there are Cub Scouts all over the world - just like you and me? How many of you have heard of a place called England? Where the Queen lives.... I am sure you might have heard of some of these famous places.
STEAM RELEASE GAME: Friendship Fun (5 minutes)
Cubs run around and when given a command they must act accordingly.
Big Ben - stand still
Buckingham Palace - march like a soldier
Crystal Palace - run around the hall
Covent Gardens - sing like an opera star

Even in Holland there are scouts - and what is Holland famous for - that's right, cheese!
RELAY GAME: Rolling the Cheese (10 Minutes)
In the Six's each cub is given a cheese (tennis ball) to gently roll to the other side. They run after the ball and on arrival at the other side they must shake hands with the Pack Scouter who will hand him his cheese. Cubs are shown the handshake before the game begins.

In all packs around the world they have a Totem Pole. Let us make our very own Totem!
HANDCRAFT: Totem tell all (20 minutes)
Cubs to build their own Totem Pole using toilet roll inners - and decorate.

At the equator where it is very hot, water is very precious and we must not spill a drop. Let us see if we can be that good!
TEAM GAME: Balloon burst (10 minutes)
Cubs join up in pairs. Each pair is given a water balloon. They pass to each other, taking a step back on each blow of the whistle. Every time one breaks, that cub must go to Akela, salute and get a new balloon.
Cubs are taught how to salute before the game begins.

When we are with our friends we always remember to share - we remember that we are a Cub Scout
SENSE TRAINING : Simply Sensational (15 minutes)
Cubs are blindfolded and allowed to taste different types of chocolates or sweets and they need to identify - eg: Kit Kat, Crunchie, chocolate, smarties etc

Let's see what we learnt today
CIRCLE GAME: Cubs are clever (10 minutes)
Each cub gets a chance to throw the dice that has been specially make by Akela. Whatever it lands on the cub must stand up and to - it will either be : Handshake, Salute, Grand Howl, Promise, Law, Motto, or Smile!

If anyone would like to send me some programmes that have run well and that the Cubs have enjoyed, please do so - I am sure all Pack Scouters would welcome these!

Spent my afternoon with 1st Benoni and they were having so much fun!

They continued with their National Challenge

and I think completed all the requirements today.

Energetic Earthworms at 6th Benoni - 6th September

It was a visit to 6th Benoni tonight and join in with those energetic "earthworms"

Some great mind games!

A rope was laid on the floor in a circle. Cubs on the outside. A CI was inside and when he called UP you had to jump inside the circle and when he shouted DOWN you had to jump outside the circle. VERY confusing but such fun!

Akela then told them a lovely yarn about an earthworm

and then the earthworms went underground!

and had to feel all the goodies around them

Some of the cubs had worked very hard and were awarded their Interest Badges

4th Benoni and a visit with Alice

I so enjoyed my visit to 4th Benoni today ..... and who should we meet up with but Alice in Wonderland!

Alice is sitting on the riverbank with her sister and is very bored. She sees a white rabbit running by and decides to follow it down its hole. She finds herself in a room with many locked doors - she needs a key.

STEAM RELEASE GAME - FIND THE GOLDEN KEY

Cubs run around looking for the golden key which has been hidden before cubs starts.

Once the door is open Alice sees that there are many strange characters in Wonderland

RELAY GAME: Wonderland

Cubs line up in relay formation. Place 6 different pictures of wonderland pictures on the walls - one for each cub. Let them first of all run and collect a picture making sure that each six has different pictures. In relay they run forward and collect whatever item corresponds with their character.

Example: Cheshire Cat - mask of cat; white rabbit - clock

Alice begins her strange journey and gets advise from a caterpillar and directions from a Cheshire Cat!

TRAIL - Find the Cheshire Cat's Grin

A trail is set out for each six - differentiated by colour. Once they have completed the trail they need to look for the cat's grin.

Alice can make herself large or small by eating different items

KIM"S GAME - Tasting 20 items

Recalling them all and writing them down.

Learning time

Alice follows the directions from the cat and arrives at the Mad Hatters un-birthday party!

TEAM GAME: Pouring the Tea....Cubs are divided into Teams. Each team has a teapot, plastic cup, tray and a bucket of water. The cub needs to fill the teapot, pour the tea into the cup and walk across the hall to another bucket to deposit the water. Team with the most water in the bucket wins.

6th Benoni visit - 16th August

6th Benoni cubs - visit on Friday 16th August

The cubs are busy with the National Cub Challenge and here they are matching countries to flags!

This can be quite challenging for a young cub - but what an opportunity to learn!

..... sometimes just a little help is needed...

Cubs then drew a picture of something that was very special to them - mom, dad, siblings animals etc.

I was absolutely amazed at the skills of this young cub - his bird that he draw was picture perfect!

Before going out to play, the cubs learnt the importance of having an birth certificate and an ID document etc.

A visit to 2nd Boksburg - National Cub Challenge

2nd Boksburg were doing part of the National Cub Challenge today

Akela started off by telling all the cubs about their "rights and responsibilities"

They played a lovely game whilst learning that everyone has the right to shelter.

All cubs are given a "shelter" (piece of paper to stand on) except for 2 cubs. The one cub needs to chase the other cub. However the cub being chased can go up to a cub in a shelter and say "please may I have your shelter" He then steps onto the paper and the other cubs runs around and hopefully does not get caught!

We learnt that every second 4 babies get born into this world.

It was time to make our very own baby.

Just as we are all very different, so were these darling babies!

Even though it is our right to have shelter, it is our responsibility to keep it tidy.

Cubs played a lovely game of keeping "their rooms tidy"

Akela and Bagheera build a very quick shelter to show the cubs that it is not difficult to get shelter from the elements anywhere and anytime.

Visit to 1st Boksburg Cameron Cub Pack

1st Boksburg have their Pack Meetings on a Wednesday - and I was off to visit!

From when I was there last, they had approximately 8 cubs and it was such a pleasure to see so many more today!

Cubs getting ready for their Steam Release Game

The programme centred around Sense Training and they had to feel, smell and taste today.

I took one of the bases (feel) but told the cubs they had to feel and tell me how many spiders were in the box and what type!

This young lady in red had to hold her friend's hand before putting it inside the box - they were so excited and afraid !

For their 67 minutes for Mandela, Gingerbread Men were made to hand out to the poor.

Teddy Bear Clinic Visit to the East Rand District - 27th July

Over 70 cubs arrived for our Teddy Bear Clinic visit today.

The Teddy Bear Clinic assists abused children by accompanying them step by step on their journey of healing.

As part of their Good Turn, cubs arrived with loads and loads of teddy bears to donate.

More than 100 teddies were donated.

We took advantage of this event and held a "catch up" as well. Cubs were divided into their advancement levels of Caracal, Cheetah, Leopards and Lions and went from base to base to do some learning.

These Caracals started with "Fires and Cooking" - learning all about safety

A Lion Cub and a conservation stove.

Interesting work taking the inside out of the orange!

The next base was "knotting" and here the cubs were shown by the leaders how to tie all the different knots.

"Green Six Dean" showing the young ones the reef knot.

This young man was the reporter for the day and was writing down all he had done and seen for the 1st Benoni log book! He interviewed a lot of the leaders - what an awesome idea!

Kitty helped us out on the Compass base and made this wonderful training aid.

"Hold the compass in your hand and move your body"

Anthony and Kitty did a great job of showing these cubs how to use the compass.

Next it was 1st Aid - and what a great base. Jennifer from 2nd Boksburg is a fully qualified paramedic so was perfectly able to show the cubs what to do in the case of an emergency.

Rika helped the cubs make their card with emergency numbers on - and remember the number to dial is 08000 55 555 for Child Line.

Just look at these awesome wounds that Jennifer brought along with her!

Whew! all that hard work and everyone deserved some cold drink and a cup cake!

Dalene from the Teddy Bear Clinic gave the cubs a short briefing on what they do - telling them if any child is hurt or abused, they are their to assist that child on the journey to healing.

Each child is given a teddy bear - and she thanked all the cubs for their wonderful donation.

It was then over to the two social workers that had come along from the Teddy Bear Clinic.

Judith and Charity chatted to the young cubs about their "rights and responsibilities" and "saying no"

They also learnt the number for child line which is very easy to remember - 0800 55 555

It was then time to carry on with the fun bases and here the cubs did "conservation" learning more about solar energy.

The next base was "safety" where the kids had fun learning about road and water safety.

The fun has begun!

1st Benoni enjoyed exploring space and having some awesome fun with their rockets...

The District's Good Turn was to collect loads and loads of teddy bears which we will hand over to the Teddy Bear Clinic next week Saturday.

These lucky four were off to the Wimpy Bar for an ice cream and milkshake - they were the winners of the

recent Cooking Compo.

Today we are going to be honouring our Fathers

Some of the silliest games we play are with our fathers.

In the animal kingdom and in our homes, Dad's have a lot to teach us...

Things can get a little out of hand when mom's away and dad is in charge!

Let's show dad how much we love him..

and before we knew it, it was time to say good bye to 7 of our cub scouts who were going up to scouts...

Farm Animals - 31st May 2013 at 9th Benoni

Today we went down to the farm to see what we could see!

Old Macdonald had a farm and on that farm he had a "duck, duck, goose" An easy quick game to play as a steam release.

For instruction today we did some quick Kim's games. We were short on leaders so divided the cubs into 3 groups and had 3 bases. The CI ran this base where Akela had put different items into containers. There were 2 containers that sounded exactly the same. The cubs had to shake until they paired them up ..... a lovely game!

Animals on the farm - a number were placed on the table and the children had to look carefully - turn their back whilst one was taken away and then they needed to guess which one.

Next up was showing them pictures of farm animals and they had to remember them all.

Feeding time on the farm is very important and has to be done carefully to ensure the animals get the right food.

Here cubs pass life saver sweets from one to the other..

On the farm team work is important.

Cubs in their Six's have to pick up a stave with 2 fingers each and work together.

Then they had to do it backwards....

Cubs then did a bit of play acting..

Our cubs love to do this and are not really shy....

Our last game was "donkey" and whoever was in the middle had to act like a monkey...

Such fun had by all!
