UPS Sees Hiring 50,000 Holiday Workers, Same as 2009

United Parcel Service Inc., the world’s largest package-delivery company, said it expects to hire 50,000 seasonal holiday workers this year in the U.S., the same as projected for last year.

The hiring typically starts this month and will bolster the current U.S. staff of 340,000 full- and part-time workers, Rebecca Treacy-Lenda, a spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based company, said today in a telephone interview. Most of the new workers are employed between the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday in late November and Christmas.

Anticipating solid sales growth for the rest of the year, department store giant Macy's Inc. said Thursday that it planned to hire 65,000 holiday workers, a slight increase from previous years.

The mostly part-time positions will be in the company's stores and also in its distribution, online fulfillment and call centers nationwide. In some cases, temporary seasonal workers are offered permanent positions based on their skills and performance over the holiday season, the company said.

Broward County Public Schools has millions of dollars to help meet class size requirements and shore up programming, but hiring teachers and staff isn't that easy, Superintendent Jim Notter acknowledged Tuesday.

InMotion Hosting, based in Marina Del Rey, Calif., has leased 18,000 square feet in an office building on Sentara Way. The company, which already employs 85 workers in Virginia Beach, will be hiring the new workers over the next three years.

Help wanted: Bridgelux hopes to hire 150 workers

Bridgelux Inc., which has barely started its new corporate life in Livermore, said Monday that it will hire 150 workers this year and next.

The clean-tech company has about 170 employees in Livermore now and is scouting for more. The company moved earlier this year from Sunnyvale to the new Livermore location, where Bridgelux has its headquarters and primary manufacturing operations.

"Bridgelux is proud to be a part of California's solution for a clean energy economy," said Bill Watkins, the company's chief executive officer.

The primary products from Bridgelux are light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, that can be used in indoor or outdoor lighting arrays.
