What They Wore Wednesday Week 14

This past Sunday we had a busy day! First church, then a birthday party, so we got two great sets of pictures in one day!

Last week I told you about this pair of shorts, expect to see them a lot because I love them on Noah! They fit him so well and can go with just about anything! Mom found Sissy's dress at a thrift store for just a couple dollars. I may be partial, but they are the cutest kiddos!

Last year Mom found this dress for Hannah at one of our local Goodwill stores, it was new with tags and she only had to pay $2 for it! I was so excited for Hannah to wear it this past Sunday and she was pretty excited too! She thought she looked like a princess!

I bought these shorts for Noah a couple weeks ago. I was so excited to see they were a 5 slim! He's so slender that he has to have slims or an adjustable waistband. I just love these shorts on him, they look so preppy!

Weekend Vintage Finds

This weekend I found a few thrifty vintage finds! I got a great deal on this little metal World Bank, Made in the U.S.A. by The Ohio Art Co. I got such a good deal on it I even had money left to put in it!

These Famous Oklahoma Indian frosted tumblers were another great find! These glasses were originally distributed in 1959 by a variety of Oklahoma gas stations. They were free gifts from the Knox Oil Company with a purchase of 10 gallons or more of gas. I didn't get them for free, but it was close enough to free, and I didn't have to buy gas or go to Oklahoma to get them!

My oldest find for the weekend was two leather bound volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

These were from the Ninth Edition of Encyclopedia Britannica. They were published in MDCCCLXXXVIII. 1888! 124 years old! WOW! I think I had a pretty good weekend! ~ Barbara

Tool Bucket

Earlier in the week I showed you the numbered pails that I made. Yesterday I found a large metal bucket so I used the same process and made a bucket for holding garden tools.

These projects were both so much fun and so easy to do! I just love the white lettering on the black buckets! ~ Barbara

Today my sweet baby boy turns 4!

Noah was born 12 weeks early and weighed 2lbs 9oz! Even though he was born early he was a healthy little boy!

After being in the NICU for 6 weeks we were able to bring him home on May 30, 2008.

Shabby White Table

I finished the table that I got on a recent thrifting trip. I wanted the table to have a really casual, shabby chic feel, so I gave it a coat of black paint followed by two coats of white.

Then I sanded it down quite a lot, so the black paint would show through.

I added a few accessories, and it's done!

This sweet little dog came from a local recycling center that has a resale store. He's a vintage ceramic piece with rhinestone eyes. He has a few nicks and chips, but he was just a quarter, and I love how he looks paired with the shabby white table! ~ Barbara

Numbered Pails

Recently I was looking at a post from Laura at Top This Top That. She had made some numbered pails inspired by some she had purchased from Pottery Barn. I decided to make a set of my own. It's such a fun, easy project!

I purchased plain silver metal pails from Hobby Lobby. Following Laura's tutorial, I spray painted the fronts white and let that dry. Then I cut the numbers out of Contact Paper using my Cricut and the Base Camp font. Next I placed the numbers over the white paint and gave the whole entire pail a couple of coats of flat black paint. After the paint was dry I peeled the Contact Paper numbers off and sanded the pails down a little to distress them. Thanks Pottery Barn for inspiring Laura! What They Wore Wednesday Week 12

Ever since I was a baby it was a tradition for everyone in the family to get a new outfit for Easter. Not only do we all get new outfits, but they usually coordinate! This year when the green pants came out at Gap I knew I wanted Noah to wear them for Easter, but didn't know what the rest of us would wear to match! Our outfits came together great and I loved everyone's look!

Gowns, Robes, Slips, and Petti Pants

Last week while Alicia and I were out thrifting, I found four Dolores of St. Paul Original patterns from 1969. None of the pattern pieces had ever been cut out. Aren't the pink lace pattern jackets so pretty!

This pattern number is 6944, and it's called the "Marie Gown." It could be made in two different versions. Original price was $1.50.

This one is pattern number 6916. It's called the "Vonna Gown." Original price was $1.50.

This one is number 5917. It's called the "Vonna Peignoir" and is the accompanying robe pattern for the "Vonna Gown." The original price was $2.00.

Last is pattern number 6929. It's for a "Childs Slip and Petti Pants." The original price for it was $1.00.

These vintage patterns are so pretty, and fun to look at. But not having to make gowns, robes, slips, and petti pants is priceless! ~ Barbara

Craigslist Freebie

Back in the fall Alicia was looking on Craigslist and found this Secretary Desk in the FREE ads. She called me and told me about it, and I was lucky enough to get it!

It was in need of a few repairs, half of the wood buttons were missing and the bottom drawer was totally disassembled. Jeff helped me get the drawer all put back together and I got the replacement wood buttons at Lowes. I painted the desk white and did quite a bit of distressing on it. I used the original hardware just as it was. I liked the way it looked with the distressed desk. It took a little time to get it done, but I guess it's not bad for a freebie! ~ Barbara

More Weekend Thrift Finds!

This weekend in Tulsa we went to the Value Thrift Store , Salvation Army on Peoria, and the Community Thrift Store.

I found my self a few items of clothing.

I found Noah several shirts!

At the Salvation Army on Peoria they always have brand new makeup for so cheap! Each item I bought was just 99 cents!

I also found a recipe box that I am planning to do a makeover on this week!

We had a blast thrifting this weekend! Today we are heading to our local Goodwill stores to see what we can find! If you live in Arkansas (maybe other states too, but I'm not sure) all green tag merchandise at Goodwill is 85% off! I can't wait to see what we find! ~ Alicia

Vintage Records

Saturday Mom and Dad were so sweet and offered to keep the kids for us all day while we took a day trip to Tulsa, OK. Jon and I had so much fun! We went to Bass Pro (for him) and a few thrift stores. At the Value Thrift Store we found some vintage records for 99 cents each!

Noah loves anything related to The Wizard of Oz, so when we saw this record/storybook we knew we had to buy it!

We also found a Treasure Island record from 1962!

I loved this Square Dances album set from 1947! When I was a kid I square danced, most of my little cousins have or currently square dance, and soon I'm sure my kids will be square dancing!

Last we found the Bing Crosby "Merry Christmas" album.

We had such a great trip and we came home with lots of stuff! Come back tomorrow to see the rest of our thrifting finds from Saturday! ~ Alicia

Coordinating Sun Yellow Lamps

I got the lamp makeover from my Weekend Thrift Finds all finished, and here it is!

This is how it looked before I painted it with Krylon Sun Yellow. To prepare the lamp I used the same process that I used here.

I used the shade that came with the lamp but tied a white and black polka dot ribbon around it.

For the flower embellishment I took an artificial flower off of the stem. I took all of the layers of petals apart and glued them together in the center. Next I glued the very center of the flower back on and cut the remaining part of the stem off that was attached to it. Then I glued an alligator clip onto the back and attached the flower to the center of the bow.

The flower and ribbon can be taken off for a more simplified look.

After I got that lamp done, I liked the color so well I wanted to do another one in Sun Yellow. I made this lamp to coordinate with the first one.

This is what it looked like before.

I used one of the lampshades that I got from my Really Good Bargain at Lowes!

The holiday trim was very easy to remove and didn't leave any sign that it had ever even been there.

This left me with a clean, blank white slate!

I got yellow bias quilt binding. I actually meant to get extra wide bias tape instead. Oh well, I just trimmed off the extra fold of the quilt binding and it worked out just fine.

I ironed it and glued it onto the lamp with Elmer's Tacky Glue.

Then I added the flower to coordinate with the other lamp.

I prepared this flower the same way but glued on a magnet instead of an alligator clip. To hold it in place I just put another magnet onto the back side of the lampshade. I didn't glue it on, so the flower can be placed anywhere on the shade or taken completely off.

So that's my coordinating Sun Yellow Lamps. Isn't the color just perfect for spring! ~ Barbara

Hannah's Summer Wardrobe

A couple weeks ago Mom, Hannah, and I had a girls day. We went to several thrift stores a few towns over. We had shopped all day, but hadn't really bought anything. It was around 5:00 pm and we decided to stop at the Salvation Army, and oh, am I glad we did! Not only is that where we found the lamps for my dining room, but also where I found Hannah's spring and summer wardrobe! We got there just as they had finished putting out new 2t and 3t girls clothing. Someone had donated so many Gymboree items!

I bought 38 tops

and 23 bottoms!

I spent a total of $116, which means each item averages out to $1.90!!! Most of the items were from Gymboree, but there were a couple from Old Navy and Gap. Can you imagine how much this would have cost in the origanal stores?! I just love thrifting! ~ Alicia

Dining Room Reveal!

After Mom gave me awesome "new" dining room furniture for my birthday I had everything I needed for my dining room makeover! I was so excited to get started! After seeing the furniture I knew the new look would be mid-century modern so I started looking at some images.

I found this picture, loved it, and it became my inspiration picture! The same day Mom found the table she bought me she also saw a tulip table. So after seeing this picture and talking about it, we decided I had to have the tulip table and we would fix the other table up to sell in her flea market booth!

My new dining room! Before seeing my inspiration picture I had started thinking about leaving the chairs like they were instead of painting them black, then after seeing it I made up my mind. I liked the color of stain and it was worn in all the right places! I decided to go with white vinyl for the cushion.

We painted the buffet white and hung the mirror behind it. I placed two black lamps on it. I originally wanted to use white drum shades, but when I found these black shades at A to Z for $8 each I decided to go with them!

I'm so happy I decided to go with the tulip table! I was a little leery because the bottom of the table was a bit rusted. I decided to google tulip table restoration and found this post. She had a professional repaint her base, but my husband is so handy and loves a good project so he decided to tackle this one! He did such an awesome job!

I wish I had a picture of our old dining furniture. It was much bigger and it was black. The new furniture feels so much cleaner and really brightens the area! We did use the same picture artwork that we had been using. The pictures are of different diners that we have passed by or eaten at on different vacations.

I love the new look! Hope you enjoyed our dining room! Visit again and maybe I'll serve lunch or dinner! ~ Alicia

A Really Good Bargain at Lowe's!

One day last week one of our local Lowe's Home Improvement Stores had these holiday lampshades on clearance for 76 cents each! BARGAIN!!! I am always on the lookout for drum shades for lamp makeovers, as you can see here, here, here, and here, so I bought all they had! I just finished painting the lamp from our Weekend Thrift Finds and I plan to use one of these shades on it. Of course I'll change it up a bit first, but I will share that with you next week. If you go to Lowe's this weekend, be sure to look and see if they have any of these shades left! You'll be glad you did! ~ Barbara

Quatrefoil Sidelights

I used a great tutorial at 7th House on the Left for using contact paper to make a window look as though it has been etched. It turned out really well!

A while back I took the sheers down that covered the two sidelights and I filled the nail holes in the metal where the hardware for the curtain rods had been hung. I had planned on putting up more sheers using magnetic rods but the magnets just didn't seem strong enough to keep the sheers from being pulled down.

So the windows stayed uncovered for far too long! When I found the tutorial using contact paper I knew it was worth a try!

I printed out the quatrefoil stencil pattern from 7th House on the Left, then scanned it. I opened up the Sure Cuts A Lot program and traced the quatrefoil image. Then I copied and pasted it until I had a total of 10 of the images.

I hooked the Cricut up to the computer, placed the contact paper on the mat, and started cutting. I repeated the cutting process several times until I had enough to cover the windows. I cut out extras because I wasted a few before I got the hang of removing the paper backing and applying the cutouts correctly.

I cleaned the windows, then measured, and drew a horizontal and vertical center line on the back side of the glass to use for a guideline. I placed my first cutout in the very center of the window (although it looks off because it is a double thickness of glass and I took the photo at an angle), then I worked my way out from the middle. When I got to the sides I would put my cutout in place then trim the excess off with an x-acto knife.

After I put all of my cutouts on I used glass cleaner to clean the marker off the back of the window.

Now light can still come through the windows but the contact paper makes it a little less transparent.

This is what it looks like at night.

The roll of contact paper cost around $6.00 and I have half of it left. So for $3.00 I have a new window treatment! But if I get tired of the quadrefoil pattern or want to put something else over the windows, all I have to do is take the contact paper off!

Now that's my kind of project! Something that will be just as easy to undo (when I'm ready to remove it) as it was to do! ~ Barbara

Basketball and Homegoods

Saturday we drove down to Hot Springs to watch my cousin, Ashley, play in the state basketball competition! She did A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!! With 13 seconds left, she scored and tied the game, sending it into overtime! The team went into overtime ready to take the state title and they did! We were so excited for Ashley especially because this was the very last game of her high school basketball career, and even more excited when they announced her as MVP!

We arrived in Hot Springs early so we decided to make a trip to Homegoods. I had never been there before, but now that I have, I LOVE IT! I found so many great items!

I bought a white picture frame,

two white drum style lamp shades,

a starburst clock,

and a set of 2 down throw pillows!

It was such a wonderful day! It was beautiful outside, I bought some awesome stuff for the house, Ashley's team won, and did I mention she got MVP?! ~ Alicia
