(Almost) Everybody Poops

This is my niece Kira. She is four years old.

Kira doesn't like to poop. At all. Kira refuses to poop. IT IS A PROBLEM. She does anything she can to avoid pooping. She holds it in. She sits on the floor with her heel in her butt when she feels like she needs to poop. She sits on the toilet with her legs stretched out stiff in front of her, squeezing her butt closed so she won't poop.

When her mom asks her why she doesn't want to poop, she says, "I don't LIKE to poop." And then she says it hurts to poop. Her Mom tells her that if she poops every day (like a normal person), it won't hurt, and that when she holds it in she just makes it worse. Kira doesn't buy it. And when her Mom tells her that you have to poop or YOU WILL DIE, she doesn't buy that either.

So then Kira and her Mom will play a game. Mom will ask her, "Who else poops?" And Kira will list out every single person she knows (and some animals). But she still doesn't want to have anything to do with pooping.

My sister says this issue has been going on for 2.5 years. The longest Kira has gone without pooping is 7 days. SEVEN DAYS. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the time she finally poops it is MASSIVE and it is a butt-cutter, so that just reinforces Kira's thinking that she does not want to poop. IT IS AN ENDLESS CYCLE.

ACK! This freaks me out! It fascinates me! I don't know how to resolve this issue! My sister has tried everything, even enemas. UGH!!!!

Have any of you heard of this type of thing before? If so, how was it RESOLVED?????

Isca Greenfield-Sanders

Isca Greenfield-Sanders creates paintings based on found photographs, usually of typical American subjects, mainly from the 1950's and 60's. Using imagery from anonymous sources Greenfield-Sanders explores the relationship between painting and photography. Greenfield-Sanders begins her works by abstracting details from the found images into small watercolor studies which are then enlarged and reprinted on 7 inch square sections of rice paper. These delicate tiles are then affixed to the larger canvases upon which Isca applies her luscious, bold, and expertly imagined and mixed palette of oil paints. The resulting scene is a contemporary reimagining of the generic imagery with which she began. She often portrays idyllic family rituals, as in her iconic beach scenes, but for all of the idealized American imagery, shadows of darkness and imperfection emerge. This is particularly evident in recent bodies of work that have included images of Korean and Second World War parachute jumpers and her latest series, "Light Leaks" which explores flaws in amateur photography through images of children's soccer games.

Isca graduated from Brown University in 2000 with a B.A. in Math and a B.A. in Visual Arts. Greenfield-Sanders lives and works in the East Village and on a lake in the Hudson Highlands. Her work is included in many private and public collections including The Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, The Israel Museum and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In early 2006 her work was the subject of a two-person exhibition at the Museum Mosbroich in Leverkusen, Germany and her work is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. Her work has been featured in many magazines and publications including Art News, ArtNet, NYLON, The New York Times, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, Tema Celeste, Elle, Departures, Vanity Fair, Elle Decor, and Art Forum.

Jessica Backhaus was born in Cuxhaven, Germany, in 1970 and grew up in an artistic family. At the age of sixteen, she moved to Paris, where she later studied photography and visual communications. Backhaus met famed photographer Gisele Freund in Paris in 1992. Freund was an important mentor and major source of inspiration for Backhaus’ early work. In 1995, Backhaus’ passion for photography drew her to New York, where she assisted photographers, pursued her own projects and lived until 2009.

Rivers, puddles, and shards of glass. Metal spoons and empty bottles. With an eye for texture, layers and serenely saturated colors, Jessica Backhaus makes photographs that reflect the world back to us. “We grow, we change, we evolve,” Backhaus writes in the opening to her 2008 monograph, One Day in November. But while we move, the objects she photographs remain static, warmed by the mid-afternoon sun and preserved by the motion of time. Backhaus is not preoccupied by the sadness of the world around her, although the pictures she takes are often filled with broken, tangled, and abandoned items. Instead, like a philosopher focusing her gaze on the middle distance, Backhaus meditates on color, line, light and shadow.

Backhaus is regarded as one of the most distinguished voices in contemporary photography in Germany today. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin. To date, she has four publications to her name: Jesus and the Cherries, 2005; What Still Remains, 2008; One Day In November, 2008; and I Wanted to See the World, 2010, all published by Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg.

Based in Berlin, Backhaus divides her time between Europe and the United States.

Have you ever been to Solvang? Solvang is a Danish village located in the Santa Ynez Valley of California.

I met my parents in Solvang the other day and I ended up taking 14 scrillion pictures while I was in the area. Here are some of them:

Thoughts on Solvang:

It is cute.
It is clean. Very clean.
I was not impressed with the food (who smothers a steak in paprika?!?!?!?!?). I did not try any sweets, which was STUPID! D'oh! They looked deeeelicious.
I did not see ANY big, burly Viking-looking dudes, which was rather disappointing.
I mostly saw elderly couples, and it appeared that the women were enjoying themselves, and that the men were tolerating the destination in hopes of getting a good meal and/or scoring points with their ladies. HA! I made this observation to my Dad, and he sighed and confirmed it was true. HA!

Christian Marclay

Christian Marclay is a New York based visual artist and composer whose innovative work explores the juxtaposition between sound recording, photography, video and film. He was born in California in 1955 and raised in Geneva (Switzerland). His mother was American so he held a double nationality. He studied at the Ecole Supérieure d'Art Visuel from 1977 - 1980 in Geneva, Switzerland. From 1977 - 1980 he studied sculpture at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. He also studied as a visiting scholar at Cooper Union in New York in 1978. As performer and sound artist Christian Marclay has been experimenting, composing and performing with phonograph records and turntables since 1979 to create his unique "theater of found sound." Christian Marclay was influenced by Marcel Duchamp. Christian Marclay offers a unique, fresh and innovative voice that has inspired an entire generation of musicians, artists and theorists.

Jeffrey Becom

Born in 1953 in Shelbyville, Indiana, Jeffrey Becom earned a BA in architecture from the University of Cincinnati. Exhibiting his work in gallery's worldwide since 1981, Becom uses his background in architecture to capture powerful, nearly abstract images of landscapes, homes and places of worship.

California-based Becom is also a writer, painter and visual anthropologist. With his wife, Sally Aberg, he has authored two award-winning books, Mediterranean Color and Maya Color: The Painted Villages of Mesoamerica (both from Abbeville Press, New York, 1990 and 1997). In 1993 Becom had a retrospective exhibition of oils, watercolors and photographs at The Octagon's American Architectural Foundation galleries in Washington, D.C.

New York Times critic Paul Goldberger calls Becom's images of Mayan villages in Central and South America "poised between the making of art and the documentation of architecture.... [Becom] takes a tiny swath of the vernacular landscape and makes of it a composition with the brilliance and intensity of an abstract painting." Becom's work is included in several private, corporate and museum collections.

One day I wore an orange and white outfit to work. All was fine until my co-worker saw me and said, "What's up, Creamsicle?" @#%!$!^&!*!@$#@!&*# I had to laugh at that statement, and ever since then the orange and white color combo has caused me to think CREAMSICLE each time I see it. Well, almost every time. :)

The Amish Beard

Do you ever wonder if your parents are starting to lose it? My Dad (who is turning 70 this year) recently started sporting an Amish beard. !!!!!!! My sister and I were discussing his stupid beard, both of us being MORTIFIED by this beard, as our family is not Amish. I think the Amish beard is quite possibly the most unattractive of the male facial hair options. I told my sister that I couldn't believe our Mom hadn't pitched a fit about the hideous beard, and my sister said my Mom certainly HAD pitched a fit about the beard, and that was precisely why my Dad hadn't shaved it off. HA!!!!!

Cig Harvey has been using past and present personal experiences as a source of inspiration for her photographs for the past 12 years. She sees her photographs as vignettes that depict autobiographical daily life in all its complexities. In addition to self-portraits, Harvey makes pictures of family and close friends to better understand their relationships. Her photographs are an attempt to legitimize her moments of uncertainty, as well as to visually celebrate times of elation, when we are reminded that the world, in all its complexities, can be mind-blowingly beautiful. She uses color, gesture and space to seduce the imagination.

Harvey is a working fine-art photographer and educator, working as an assistant professor at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Harvey's work has been highlighted in PDN, Popular Photography and American Photography. Harvey lives in a Boston apartment and a renovated Maine farmhouse with her husband, Doug, and their dog, Scarlet Snacks.

Do you collect anything in particular?

I think most of us collect at least one thing or another. I suppose that I collect clothes, shoes, jewelry, books and art. For a while I was collecting teapots, and never using them, so I wondered what the point was and pretty much quit collecting those space-taking teapots.

So I was wondering why we collect things. Because we are bored? To have a hobby that keeps us entertained? To distinguish ourselves from others? To have something to show off? To have some sense of purpose in life? To blow money? To fill the emptiness of our lives? Other?

I was wondering if there was a psychological theory behind the tendency of collecting, and it turns out there are many interesting thoughts about it:

Throughout the ages, people have devoted great amounts of time, money, and energy making and maintaining collections. When people think of collecting, they may put in mind expensive works of art or historical artifacts that are later sold to a museum or listed on ebay. But the truth is, for many people who amass collections, the value of their collection is not monetary, but emotionally valuable—and often not for sale. Collections allow people to relive their childhood, connect themselves to a period in history or time they feel strongly about, to ease insecurity and anxiety about losing a part of themselves, and to keep the past present. Some collect for the thrill of the hunt. Collecting is much like a quest, a life-long pursuit which can never be complete. Collecting may provide psychological security by filling a part of the self one feels is missing or void of meaning. When one collects, they experiment with arranging, organizing, and presenting a part of the world which may serve to provide a safety zone, a place of refuge where fears are calmed and insecurity is managed. Motives are not mutually exclusive, different motives combine in each collector for a multitude of reasons.

What Is Collected?

People will and do collect almost anything. Saint Louis collected saints’ relics and built a temple for them. Collections may be antisocial, such as the collection described in Mozart's darkest play, Don Giovanni. Mozart’s character, Don Giovanni, ran about town collecting sexual conquests, making his endeavored servant Leporello follow after him and list names in a catalog, verifying the authenticity of the account while doing so. Henry Wellcome, a pharmacist, collected for society- he spent 40 years collecting over a million sharp objects that he felt could represent the history of medical science. He later opened a museum “The Museum of Medical Science” which during WWI.The infamous are famous for their collections. Donald Trump collects skyscrapers, Demi Moore has an entire house filled exclusively with her doll collection, Sharon Stone collects cashmere sweaters. Napolean collected countries, a habit that led to the “Napolean Complex” term we use to describe a man who compensates for physical flaws through aggression.

Psychologists Perspectives

Psychologists have often taken a Freudian perspective when describing why people collect. They highlight the controlling and impulsive dark side to collecting, the need for people to have “an object of desire.” This desire, and hence the innate propensity to collect, begins at birth. The infant first desires the emotional and physical comfort of the nourishing breast, then the familiar baby blanket the child clings to for comfort and security. Stuffed animals, favorite toys are taken to bed and provide the emotional security needed to fall asleep. A sense of ownership and control is facilitated through possession of these items for the vulnerable child. Freud himself took a more extreme position on the origins of collecting. Not surprisingly, he postulated that all collecting stems from unresolved toilet training conflict. Freud took the stance that the loss of bowel control was a traumatic experience, and the product from the bowels was disgusting and frightening to the child. Therefore the collector is trying to gain back control of their bowels as well as their “possessions” which were long flushed down the toilet. Where Freud linked object fixation to the anal-retentive stage in childhood, Muensterberger, in his perspective paper “Unruly Passion” believes collecting to be a “need-driven compensatory behavior where every new object effectively gives the notion of fantasized omnipotence." Jung had his own theories about why people become collectors. He touted the influence of archetypes on behavior. These universal symbols are embedded in what he termed our collective unconscious. Using this logic, collecting and completing sets have as their archetypal antecedents the collecting of “nuts and berries” once needed for survival by our early ancestors.

A Dark Side?

There are unemotional commerce-motivated collectors, those that hunt for collectibles only to turn them around soon after and sell them. However, the current author of many autograph collecting books, Mark Baker, describes most autograph seekers as being emotionally motivated to collect. Baker (2005) estimates that over 90% of autograph collectors have no intention to sell their wares. If not for money, and assuming issues arising from childhood were long resolved, then what reasons do people give for collecting? "For me there are three sides to it," says Petrulis, a former outfielder at St. Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota who is an avid autograph collector. "The thrill of the chase, seeing who will sign that day. Second, the collecting aspect, trying to put together one of the best autograph collections around. And, finally, feeling more connected to the game because I actually meet the guys playing it instead of just seeing them on television." Petrulis also admits there is a dark side to collecting, providing some support for the Catholic Church's position that emotions are bad. "It gets addictive," says Petrulis, "just like gambling, drugs or sex. It's like putting a coin in a slot machine. It might not pay off this time, so you put another quarter in and keep doing it until you are tapped out or finally hit the jackpot."

When Collecting is Happy

Despite the interesting “dark side” of collecting, collecting is still mostly associated with positive emotions. There is the happiness from adding a new find to the collection, the excitement of the hunt, the social camaraderie when sharing their collection with other collectors. Oxlade-Vaz describes the intense emotional bond she had with her grandmother, and the rich heart-warming memories she had amassed at her grandma’s house as a child and even as an adult. Her grandmother, a product of the Great Depression, “saved” everything. As a child, the author recalls the loving and gentle way her grandmother organized seemingly ordinary items: rubber bands were neatly bound together and artfully displayed on the mantle. Tops of pens of all colors and sizes were neatly arranged in drawers and bins. Artificial flowers, saved from the dumpster decorated every room in the house. At her grandmother’s death, Oxlade-Vaz recalls the overwhelmingly pleasant emotions that overcame her as she sorted through her grandma’s collections. Though not valuable, the author kept these collections to remember her grandma’s thrifty, sensible, wisdom—reminders of the graceful way her grandmother was able to provide seemingly useless items dignity and respect.

Hoarding

There are also times when collecting is not pleasant for anyone — and much harder to describe than simply dark. These are the collectors that have surpassed healthy collecting behavior and are considered hoarders. When a collection becomes hoarding is when it also becomes pathological. Hoarding is pathological because it interferes with living a normal daily life. Differences between collecting and hoarding are clear. Items in a collection are neatly organized, maintained, and presented or manipulated with ease. If a collector of 1000+ trains wants to find a particular one from his collection, he can find it easily. Collections are often catalogued, sorted, and objectively maintained like books in a library. Hoarding behavior is the opposite. Items with no value or use are piled up in stacks without order nor reason. Steven W. Anderson, a neurologist who studies hoarding behavior, posits that the need to collect stems from a basic drive to collect basic supplies such as food. This drive originates in the subcortical and limbic portions of the brain. According to Anderson, people need their prefrontal cortex to determine what supplies are worth saving (or hoarding). Anderson has found that many compulsive hoarders with brain injury had suffered damage to a region of their brain that regulates cognitive behaviors like decision making, information processing, and organizing behavior—the prefrontal cortex. Those with brain injury who did not display hoarding behavior, did not have damage to their frontal cortex, but showed damage distributed throughout the right and left hemispheres of their brain.

In the latest addition to his cake-themed sculptures and installations, Scott Hove explores the concept of the End of Days. Throughout our history, artists, musicians, authors, mystics, and politicians have used the concept of the 'imminent end of civilization' to create a sense of urgency and identity around the issues of their time. In My Own Private Apocalypse, Scott comes to terms with his own personal beliefs and obsessions around the end of the world, and pays ironic tribute to those whose beliefs and fanaticism around environment, economy and spirituality have indeed resulted in apocalypse on a small to not-so-small scale.

In My Own Private Apocalypse, Scott continues his ongoing 'Cakeland' theme, utilizing traditional cake decorating tools and techniques with acrylic media to render extremely realistic looking wall-hanging cakes and immersive kaleidoscopic installations. These are then accessorized with decidedly un-cakelike items such as taxidermy jaws, hypodermic needles, plastic insects and other objects which counterbalance the typical sense of happiness and positive expectation associated with a delicious looking cake. In this exhibition Scott engages the viewer in a roller coaster ride of sensation: from the experience of beauty and joy, to the deconstruction of beauty, struggle, greed and artifice, the distortion of volume and space, and then a return to beauty and joy.

Scott Hove was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area. He lives and works in his Oakland gallery/warehouse known as Cakeland, which is visited regularly by collectors and enthusiasts of food and art. His work has been featured in HiFructose Magazine, The Cooking Channel, KCRW Radio, The LA Times, and dozens of print magazines and blogs. He has shown his work at Billy Shire Fine Arts and Scion Space in Los Angeles, Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, Musee De Halle in Paris, Modern Eden Gallery and 941 Geary in San Francisco.

Sweet Mini Peppers

Have you seen these tiny and adorable sweet mini peppers? Have you TRIED THEM?! They are so sweet and juicy and delicious!

I don't really have a recipe for you -- I think these little fellas are best served raw [decapitation optional; like most of us, they are cuter with the tops on].

I have also tried roasting them, but I prefer them raw. (If you are going with the roasting or grilling method, don't cut off the tops and when you bite into each little roasted sweet pepper it will BURST into your mouth with a giant squirt of juiciness -- it is hilarious.)

Also pictured above is my new little ECOlunchbox. SO FRAKKING CUTE! It looks like a tiny turkey roasting pan! It makes me laugh! If you want one {actually it is a set of three! whee!}, they are available here.

Thoughts on The Renaissance Pleasure Faire?

I think there are probably only two possible reactions one can have when asked if they would like to attend a Renaissance Faire:

1) Oh yes, m'lord! Oh YES!!!!!!!!!!

or

2) No fucking way.

Manfriend asked me if I would like to attend. I responded with something like, "No fucking way, I'd rather go to 20 baseball games (!GROAN!) than attend a Renaissance Faire."

So....guess what idiot put her foot in ther stupid mouth and now gets to go to 20 baseball games this season? @#$%!^&*!@#$%

The Renaissance, to be “reborn”, a time when individuals celebrated the awakening of a new idea, when light was let into darkness. The Renaissance Pleasure Faire celebrates the “spirit” of this period of history ~ where people have the willingness to try anything and everything.

We offer the public an opportunity to experience a true Renaissance of our Renaissance, one that was introduced 50 years ago. The faire provides you a cornucopia of diversity where we are unified in inviting our guests to enjoy an environment we have created to escape from the stresses and demands of the modern day. We embrace cutting edge performances, artisans, flavors and culinary delights from the past and the future…………these are the things, which propel us into advanced forward thinking.
